Senior Citizens Reenact Classic Movie Scenes For Nursing Home Calendar A Creative Calendar from a Retirement Home. What a fantastic idea! I’ll just bet they had a ball. A German Retirement Community did a calendar where seniors amazingly recreated famous movie scenes. The Contilia Retirement Group in Essen, Germany, made what is probably the best calendar ever with a few of their seniors. According to the German Press, 5000 calendars were printed, and they were given out to the residents of the Senior Centre and their relatives and staff. The calendar models were interviewed about the project and said it was a ton of fun to dress up as their favourite actors. The shoot was done with professional stylists and photographers to make sure everything looked as cool as possible. The oldest senior involved with the calendar was 98 years! From James Bond to Holly Golightly, ‘The Blues Brothers’ to ‘Saturday Night Fever’, check out the wonderful results in each 2017 issue of the PVRA Newsletter! Life is too short for regrets and worrying about the future. This newsletter needs more articles such as personal experiences (I hope you like my article on Christmas centerpiece creating and Jim’s article on the bison calf,) health (Seine Pharmacy will not be providing articles anymore,) well-being, trips, humour, words of wisdom, beefs and bouquets, and any other

Message from the PVRA President The past year has been a challenge for many, and with world events as they are we have much to be thankful for, living where we do. As we end 2016 we should count our blessings and be thankful. We must be positive and look to the year ahead with hope and optimism. While there may always be issues and challenges in our lives, it is comforting to know that many of these get resolved in time.

About 150 residents enjoyed a wonderful Xmas dinner December 10th. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to connect with friends and fellow residents of the park. It certainly put folks into a Xmas mood. A big thank you is extended to the team from PVRA that put the evening together. With our recent weather events, management is to be commended for the great job in clearing our roadways

throughout the village and for many, having walkways cleared as well. On behalf of the PVRA I take this opportunity to extend to all residents of the Village and Management the very best throughout 2017. Gord Macpherson 2nd VP PVRA

CHRISTMAS DINNER - DECEMBER 2016 Christmas dinner was a success with 134 tickets sold and a good time was had by all. Although the caterer ran a little late we were happy that she arrived safely as the roads were treacherous that night. Sharon of Homestyle Catering did the cooking for this year’s event and it was very good and tasty. The trifles that some of our residents made were a definite hit for dessert! We had Ray Belisle provide the music and he had everyone dancing for hours and my feet were sore for a few days! We did however keep his wife Pat busy on the dance floor while he played his music. Then we handed out a number of prizes starting off with wine donated by Linda Fulmore and Pat Zubrin and Joanne Kehler. Then we had two Christmas candy baskets, cookie and nut basket, a small safe for either a home or motorhome and the Indoor/Outdoor Weather Station, Money tree, 50/50 draw of $228.00 and lastly a beautiful stone ornament donated and made by Russell Bencharski. I think all of our winners were satisfied with the gifts they won. After a night of dancing and fun I counted 30 people who stayed to help clean up the hall and the kitchen, sweep floors, gather the plastic and tablecloths and put tables and chairs away and I believe it was done in record time! I don’t remember all the names of those helpers but Cheryl and I are so blessed to have had all this help and we thank all of those people who made our evening go so smoothly. We have so many people to thank for the success of this event and they are: Decorations: Carol Stoess and Joanne Kehler and their crew of Vida Bowyer, Lily Lowing, Judy Burnell, Cheryl Porte, Doreen Bilyk, Pat Zubrin and myself who helped with the table centrepieces. Jill & Justin and their helpers Gene Porte, Bob Grimshaw, Cam Barley, George & Gaye Lemay, Malcolm Tarry, Ron Beckett, Joanne Kehler, Carol Stoess, Tedda Grimshaw. Thank you Jill & Justin for all of the decorations you provided and put up as well as the great lunch you served all of your helpers that day. And Thank you for coming back to finish with final touches which made our event very special. And many might not know it but the men did decorate the tree with little bits of advice from the women. Set up Crew: Ron & Lori Beckett, Peter Elwick, Cam Barley, Gene Porte, Bob & Tedda Grimshaw, George & Gaye Lemay, Ray & Pat Belisle, Linda Fulmore, Pat & Marvin Zubrin, Linda Fulmore, Carol Stoess and Joanne Kehler, Malcolm Tarry, Laura Morrow. Grace: Beautifully said by Shirley Beaudin Servers & their relief crew: Gaye Lemay, Laura Morrow, Tedda Grimshaw, Evelyn Fillion, Lori Beckett, Gene Porte, Pat & Ray Belisle and Cam Barley. Dinner ticket seller: Olga Baschak Dinner tickets at door: Tedda Grimshaw and Laura Morrow 50/50 draw ticket seller: Malcolm Tarry & Ron Beckett Money tree seller: George Lemay Trifle makers: Gaye Lemay, Lori Beckett, Pat Zubrin, Cheryl Porte, Rose McDonald Recipes: Gaye & Pat & Cheryl & Rose Clean up crew: I counted 30 people who assisted us in the clean up and we are really grateful for all of their help….they were all of the above mentioned as well as some of the singles group and more. If I missed thanking anyone please forgive me as my memory is as short as I am. We can’t thank you enough for all of your help! What a great bunch of people live in Paradise!

We hope all had a Merry Christmas and we wish you all the Best in 2017 and beyond! Convenors: Cheryl Porte and Paulette Barley

Paradise Village Singles December 2016 Our Xmas dinner was on December 5th with 23 attending at Carol’s Stoess’ home; which was decorated inside and out! Thanks Carol for having us all over. As you can see by my pictures there was a lot of good food and socializing. For the first time, instead of exchanging gifts with each other (which none of us need by the way), we collected can goods and toys plus knitting apparel to be donated to the local Ste. Anne Food Bank. It was a great success thank you everyone. Our December birthday girl was Cynthia!

A few of us are going to the Symphony in Steinbach on December 14th which will be very enjoyable as we’ve all been there before. The next singles is at Larry Menec’s at 18 Village Drive on January 9th, 2017. All singles are welcome! Please contact Larry at (204) 4225712 and let him know you will be coming so he can plan the seating arrangements. Just bring along your favourite dish. Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village On December 12th, we met and welcomed new residents to Paradise Village and they are Ronald (Ron) and Patricia Sauve. We were welcomed with a nice variety of cookies and baking along with tea and coffee. The Sauve’s possession was November 12th, 2016 and they are still unpacking as evidenced by a few large boxes still remaining to be unpacked. I can relate as I too still have some boxes to unpack. They had a home in Winnipeg which they sold to one of their sons who just happened to inherit a great deal of furnishings with it as downsizing seems to make that happen. Ron was born in St. Boniface and worked for the Provincial Government as a Correction’s Officer and is happily retired. He has a passion for Music and Rock and Roll is his favourite. Ron is interested in all sports and he absolutely loves to cook. He always has Patricia’s dinner waiting for her, when she arrives home from work. Patricia works for a large Insurance Company on Hargrave and is their New Business Supervisor and may possibly retire within a year. Patricia loves to watch TV when she has the time and really enjoys reading Romance novels so she is excited to see what the Library has on its shelves. Patricia’s family is from Holland and she has travelled back to her roots in Europe a few times. Patricia also has a beautiful collection of Holland’s blue dinnerware along with a number of other pieces. Ron and Patricia have 2 sons ages 27 and 33 and one grandson. One of their sons plays for the East Side Eagles and as a family they all love sports….all sports! Welcome to Paradise Village Ron and Patricia!

Funny Bone Obama, Hillary and Trump are standing at the throne of heaven. God looks at them and says, “Before granting you a place at my side, I must ask you what you have learned, what you believe in.” God asks Obama first: “What do you believe?” He thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, “I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my countrymen”. God can’t help but see the essential goodness of Obama , and offers him a seat to his left. Then God turns to Hillary and says, “What do you believe?” Hillary says, “I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. Like Obama I believe in hard work. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I’ve always tried to be a true patriot and a loyal American.” God is greatly moved by Hillary’s highpitched eloquence, and he offers her a seat to his right. Finally, God turns to Trump and says, “And you, Donald, what do you believe?” Trump replies, “I believe you’re in my seat.”

Christmas Centrepiece Workshop - by Debbie Kokil

On December 14th a small group of ladies from Paradise Village gathered at the Sunrise Nursery & Greenhouse in Steinbach for a tutorial and creation of a Christmas centrepiece. As this was our first time attempting this we came completely empty handed without ribbon, bows, pinecones, fake flowers, coloured or sparkly accents, to enhance our centrepieces. No problem though because we were ready to learn and create; excited to make gifts for our loved ones.

As we arrived a bit late all the rest of the group were already gathered around a work table creating, chatting, laughing and enjoying the experience. Some had crystal dishes, baskets, and plastic pots, while others purchased a container, just as we were about to. We were assisted by one of the employees who suggested a variety of plastic trays and tin or wood buckets that we needed to buy to build our centerpiece out of. I chose a rectangular black plastic tray and my Mom chose a tin bucket. Together, with the oasis foam provided, off we went to join the group. On the floor there were several buckets filled with natural greenery – sprays of pine and cedar and branches of berries that we could choose from for materials. At first the task seemed like it could be fun but quickly turned into poke a branch in pull it out, poke a branch in pull it out, poke a branch and in pull it out. Soon, my oasis was filled with very large holes.

Everyone else’s looked professional and even my Mom’s (who had never done this before) looked amazing. Twice the employees came over to guide me in this tough crafting experience and I thought I got it but it just did not come natural to me. Even when the employee popped out to get me some fur, sorry I mean fir, it helped, but not to the extent the other’s looked. My centrepiece did not look like it should have from the idea I had in my head. But eventually I managed to get through it and I thought it didn’t look that bad in the end. I placed a glass candle in the center and my daughter-in-law loved it. Everyone else was very happy with their creations and left proudly holding

their masterpieces. Would I do this again, maybe? Let’s see what next year brings. PS. My Mom gave her centrepiece to my sister at our Family Christmas Gathering on Sunday the 18th. We enjoyed great company and good food. My Mom and I were the last to leave. As we sat around the table talking about the great time we had had, I reached over to turn the centrepiece gift that my sister got and the next thing I knew it went up in flames. Surprised, I grabbed it and rushed towards the sink. I felt so bad. Only one side burned up, we laughed, and the room smelled of burnt pine. Lesson learned, I don’t think there will be a next time. The Story of a Bison Calf Bison ranching has always interested me. Containing and managing these wild animals is not the same as cattle ranching. It must be quite challenge. Mature bison can reach up to 6 feet, 6 inches tall, grow 10 feet long, and can weigh over 2000 pounds. The heads and forequarters are massive and they have short, curved horns for fighting and defense; they don’t like fences and they can sometimes get belligerent. Friends of mine from Paradise Village told me of a couple, named Garry and Betty, who used to operate a bison ranch near Fraserwood, MB. One day during calving season they noticed two cows, lying side-by-side, giving birth to their reddishbrown calves. Everything went fine until both animals claimed one of the calves as their own, abandoning the other calf in the field. Seeing what had happened, Garry suggested to Betty that she would drive him out to the field, where he would rescue the calf by hoisting it into the back of their truck. But they would have to do it fast; bison, when provoked, can charge and even kill a person. Bison look big and cumber-

some, but they are capable of jumping three-foot fences and running up to 35 miles per hour. If you see one coming toward you, look out! Sure enough, the couple rescued the calf – it was a female – and brought it back to their yard, where they got out a large milk-bottle and fed it formula. But as the days and weeks flew by, the calf grew by leaps and bounds, bonding as it did with the man and woman. It would go where ever they went, following them on their walks, sometimes jamming its great bulk between them. It was smart too, and it learned to come in the house by turning the door knob. Not the kind of animal you want lumbering around the house. And then it would wander into town by itself. The town residents, knowing who the bison belonged to, would phone to have it picked up. It must have thought of itself as a human. In the summer, Betty liked to suntan in the yard. When she did that the bison would come and lie down beside her. That was fine, but it was dirty and attracted flies; the flies would then land on Betty and bother her.

It also grew protective of the yard, and would paw the ground with its front hooves whenever the delivery truck would arrive with a load of feed. The delivery man was even afraid to get out of his truck when he saw this cantankerous animal coming towards him. Eventually, the ranchers re-introduced the calf, now nearly full-grown, back to the herd. Bison, except at

breeding time, tend to divide themselves into male-bachelor herds and female herds with calves. The female herds are led by a matriarch. Good news! The little calf that had grown up so closely with humans eventually became a successful matriarch of the herd. What an adaptive animal it had been. By Jim & Linda L’Esperance

19 COMPARING NOTES Dorothy and Edna, two “senior” widows, are talking. Dorothy: “That nice George Johnson asked me out for a date. I know you went out with him last week, and I wanted to talk with you about him before I give him my answer.” Edna: “Well, I’ll tell you. He shows up at my house punctually at 7 pm, dressed like such a gentleman in a fine suit, and he brings me such beautiful flowers! Then he takes me downstairs and what’s there; a limousine, uniformed chauffeur and all. Then he takes me out for dinner; a marvelous dinner, lobster, champagne, dessert, and after-dinner drinks. Then we go see a show. Let me tell you Dorothy, I enjoyed it so much I could have just died from pleasure! So then we are coming back to my apartment and he turns into an ANIMAL. Completely crazy, he tears off my expensive new dress and has his way with me three times!” Dorothy: “Goodness gracious! So you are telling me I shouldn’t go?” Edna: “No, no, no, I’m just saying, wear an old dress.”

11 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About James Bond 1. Ian Fleming first sold the rights to adapt James Bond for just $1,000 In 1954 Ian Fleming sold the television rights to Casino Royale to CBS for $1,000. The television production done that same year was the first screen adaptation of James Bond and starred Barry Nelson as part of the anthology series Climax Mystery Theater. CBS adapted the story to appeal to American audiences, making Bond an American, often referred to as “Jimmy.” 2. James Bond benefited from Ian Fleming’s failed TV pilots Producer Henry Morganthau III from NBC approached Fleming in 1955 with the idea

for a half-hour adventure series filmed in Jamaica called Commander Jamaica, or James Gunn: Secret Agent. Fleming wrote the 28 page pilot for the show and not surprisingly the main character greatly resembled Bond. After production for the television fell through, Fleming used the script as the basis for his next book Dr. No. In 1958 Fleming outlined six episodes for a potential television series for CBS. This television project also fell apart, but the resourceful Fleming used three of the plots for his Bond short story anthology For Your Eyes Only. Also, Fleming was briefly involved with helping to develop the TV show The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and is credited with coming

up with that name. 3. John F. Kennedy asked Ian Fleming how to defeat Fidel Castro The James Bond novels, while popular in England, had a rather lukewarm reception in the United States — until new president John F. Kennedy listed From Russia with Love as one of his ten favorite books in an interview with Life Magazine in 1961. Kennedy had met Fleming at a dinner party in 1960 and asked him about overthrowing Fidel Castro. Fleming gave Kennedy a bizarre plot that involved convincing Castro his beard attracted radiation, causing Castro to shave off his beard and thus totally destroy his mojo. 4. M was Ian Fleming’s nickname for his own mother The character M was most likely a composite of people Fleming knew. Superficially the character resembles Rear Admiral J.H. Godfrey, Fleming’s commander in the intelligence division during WWII. Godfrey complained after Fleming’s death about being made into an unsavory character. However it seems psychologically M was based more on Fleming’s own mother, whom he did refer to as M. Fleming’s biographer says, “While Fleming was young, his mother was certainly one of the few people he was frightened of, and her sternness toward him, her unexplained demands, and her remorseless insistence on success find a curious and constant echo in the way M handles that hard-ridden, hard-killing agent, 007.” Something to consider if you’ve ever questioned the casting of Dame Judi Dench in the role of M, or the possible implications of a maternal relationship between M and Bond because of it. 5. George Lazenby was known for his diva behavior The second actor to play James Bond refused to sign up for a seven-film deal, because his friend/ manager Ronan O’Rahilly told him he should just make one Bond film and then “get out.” And once Lazenby was a movie star, he decided to act like one — sending away the car the studio sent for him in the mornings if he didn’t like the color, demanding a car to drive him the 50 yards from his dressing room to the Pinewood restaurant, and eating garlic before he was supposed to film a love scene. Later, the producers offered him $1 million to play Bond again, and he demanded double that amount. Part of the problem, says Lazenby, was that he was trying to be Bond off-screen as well as on. By the time On Her Majesty’s Secret Service had come out, Lazenby had gotten more into the counterculture, rejecting the establishment nature of James Bond — and he showed up for the premiere of the film dressed as a hippie, with a shaggy beard and long

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

21 hair. Later, Lazenby starred in a series of hilarious Australian and Hong Kong action films in the 1970s, largely playing either himself or a thinly veiled version of James Bond. 6. The creator of “Little Nellie” was still trying to break speed records two years ago Remember “Little Nellie,” the flying machine that Q brings to James Bond in some suitcases in You Only Live Twice? That’s a Wallis Autogyro, or WA-116 to be precise. Wing Commander Ken Wallis built three militarytype autogyros in 1962, and for a long time they held most of the world records for speed, climbing time, altitude and range. Bond movie designer Ken Adam was shaving one morning, when he heard Wallis on the radio, saying he’d like to pit one of his autogyros against some helicopters — and Adam decided that would be a great set piece for the next Bond film. During the main “Little Nellie” flying scenes, that’s Wallis himself piloting the autogyro — except that the special effects crew had attached “ruddy big rockets” to the back of it, with a live shotgun cartridge and black powder in them, to make smoke. Wallis hadn’t anticipated how heavy the fake rockets would make his autogyro, causing some serious problems. As recently as June 2010, the now-95-yearold Wallis was still trying to break speed records with his autogyro. 7. Goldfinger was a neighbor of Ian Fleming’s At least, Ian Fleming’s neighbor was Erno Goldfinger, the famous architect. Erno Goldfinger was known for creating his “brutal” highrise buildings and for loving concrete the same way Auric Goldfinger loves gold. The real-life Goldfinger threatened to sue to stop the publication of Fleming’s novel, but finally changed his mind — sparing us from Fleming’s fall-back plan, which was to call the villain “Goldprick.” (A suggestion from the critic Cyril Connolly.) Just imagine Shirley Bassey singing about “Goldprick” for a moment.

8. There’s a long tradition of product placement in James Bond If you are feeling iffy about the Heineken product placement in Skyfall, let it go. Product placements have always been a part of the franchise. Originally in the novels, Bond was only a Times newspaper reader, Fleming worked as a gossip columnist for the Sunday Times. Then his second book was picked up for serialization by the Daily Express, a rival paper, and suddenly Bond became an Express reader as well. Also, in the second James Bond movie, From Russia With Love, a large billboard advertising the Bob Hope movie Call Me Bwana, which happens to have the same producers as the Bond films, is prominently displayed. 9. Ian Fleming was worried the Cold War would be over by 1961 Remember how James Bond’s adversaries suddenly changed from the Russian spy agency S.M.E.R.S.H. to the unaligned spy organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E.? That was because Ian Fleming was worried the Cold War was going to end too quickly. In 1959, Ian Fleming was working on a screenplay for a new Bond film, which later became his novel Thunderball and finally spawned two movies. (It’s a long story.) But Fleming was worried it would take two years to produce Thunderball, and by 1961 a story about the Cold War might seem outdated, or worse. So instead, Fleming came up with this new organization, made up of 21 members of the world’s most ruthless organizations, including S.M.E.R.S.H., the Corsican Mafia, President Tito’s secret police, and Turkish drug smugglers. Also, S.P.E.C.T.R.E. mastermind Blofeld could have been a hunchback — when Donald Pleasence took the role in You Only Live Twice, he wanted to play the character with humps, a sinister beard, and a “lame hand” — possibly not all at once — but was talked into just having a menacing scar instead.

10. Ian Fleming had literary aspirations for the Bond novels He referred to his books not as literature, but as “thrillers designed to be read as literature.” In a 1957 letter to CBS, Fleming explained: “In hard covers, my books are written for and appeal primarily to an “A” readership but they have all been reprinted in paperbacks in both England and America and it appears that the “B” and “C” classes find them equally readable, although one might have thought that the sophistication of the background and detail would be outside their experience and in part incomprehensible.” Much later, Fleming was vindicated, when the critic Umberto Eco embarked on a rigorous study of the Bond books using the then-trendy field of Structural Analysis. 11. Sean Connery really was in danger of getting burned in the crotch during the “Goldfinger’s laser” scene When they filmed that famous scene where James Bond is spread-eagle on a table and Goldfinger’s laser beam is cutting the table, moving closer to his crotch, Connery’s look of panic is real. Special effects man Albert J. Luxford was under the table with an acetylene torch, cutting through the table from beneath to make it look like the laser was cutting it from above. Says Luxford: “The center of the table, through which I was cutting, was lead and I just worked my way along it, on my back, once I was given the word. However, as I couldn’t really see how far up the table I was, I had to be told when to stop. As I got nearer and nearer to his crotch, Sean was sweating a bit. I hate the thought of ever injuring an actor, but ‘there’ would have been awful! I followed my cues exactly and was listening to Gert and Sean’s dialogue carefully, too, as I knew it would end, and laser switch off, after Sean mentioned ‘Operation Grandslam.’ I was about 3” from his crotch when I stopped. Poor Connery also had his wrist broken doing martial-arts training for Never Say Never Again — and the man who broke his wrist was Steven Seagal.

I was in a restaurant once and I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my reliefs to the beat of the music. After just a few songs I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me... That was when I remembered I was listening to my iPod. *** Coco Chanel once said that you should put perfume on places where you want to be kissed by a man. But hell does that burn! *** A woman in a bikini reveals about 90% of her body.... and yet most men are so polite they only look at the covered parts!

May 2017 be the year that you receive all the “new things” that God has for you! Remember the words of Jesus to His followers: (St. John 10:10) “I (Jesus) have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (The Amplified Bible says: “...life...in abundance, to the full, till it overflows”) Some of the many wonderful things that Christ has promised: -

Divine LOVE without limits poured out upon us (St. John 3:16; I John 3:1) Perfect PEACE to protect our hearts & minds (John 14:27; Philippians 4:7) Wonderful COMFORT in all the trials of life (II Corinthians 1:3-7) Fullness of JOY in His presence (Psalm 16:11) Eternal HOPE of everlasting LIFE with God, the Father & Son (St. John 3:36)

So many assurances that God will “meet all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19) How do we receive all this bounty from the Heavenly Father? As the old hymn relates: “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” No doubt, 2017 will bring us some challenges as well as many joys, but Jesus does promise to all who love Him: “Surely I will be with you always” (Matthew 28:20) adn He will walk with us through allo those trying times with His comfort, peace , Love and strength. Only “Trust & Obey...” May the Bountiful Father’s richest blessings and unfailing love be yours all year long!!!
