May 15, 2018 Letter to the Editor; It’s dust time again so I would like to remind all villagers to please respect your neighbours on Paradise Drive by not using the laneway as a shortcut from the front entrance to Birch to access other streets in the park. Some of our folks have asthma, and the dust kicked up by vehicles makes it very difficult for them to breathe. We are all looking forward to a pleasant summer outside. PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

President’s Message Weather Wise: Summer is upon us here in Paradise Village. Our lots are showing that as residents, “We Care”. Management and Owners are trying to spruce up the Park. We have had some wonderful functions to date which reunites the residents and brings PVRA Members and Non-Members together as “one big happy family”. Our May 7th AGM went off without too much aggravation in spite of Management’s refusal to permit the PVRA access to the Rec Centre, “because another group was using the facility”, which we now know and always suspected, to be not the case. Despite this, our meeting was held outside on the Rec Centre grounds and went off without any problems or issues. Our counselor, Randy Eros, got to see firsthand one of the issues your PVRA faces when dealing with Management and the Owner. The “Spring into 2018” Meet and Greet Your Neighbours’ BBQ was a great success. The weather was agreeable and a good time was had by all who attended. Your PVRA’s first Happy Hour on May 23rd, held at the Rec Centre grounds, was also a “Smash Hit”. The Crafty Monday “Pot Party” was new and it helped many residents prepare lovely planters with extraordinary plants to enhance our surroundings throughout the summer months. The Annual “Garage Sale” at the beginning of June is looking to be a great success also. Your Social Committee has many events planned over the summer months, so please plan on attending. And finally, a very special “Thank You” to each and every one of you who showed your confidence in your current Executive Team by re-electing them in their current positions for another term. We have some challenges ahead of us, but with your continued support and our commitment to you, we are going to do our very best to make Paradise Village “Great Again”! Ludwik Jarco “Proudly” PVRA President

EDUCATION TAX CREDIT - IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR 2018 Residents, it has come my attention that if you want to apply for your $700 education tax credit, you must go to the Paradise Village Office before June 7th to sign up. You will then be given your tax statement. This is a new format created by the government. as provided by Ludwick Jarco

JUNE 2018

Words from the Editor The month of May was pretty exciting wasn’t it? Let’s begin with the 1st 2018 PVRA General Meeting. Despite not having access to the Recreation Centre Building the turnout was great and the weather couldn’t have been better. The list of PVRA Executive Members who have fulfilled their 2 year term obligation were: President, 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents, Membership, Editorial, and Treasurer. Nominations were presented for the positions of President and 2nd Vice-President and all other members are willing to stand for another two year term except Editorial (But no nominations came forward). The positions of Secretary, Kitchen/Social, and House are in the middle of their two-year term and as such will continue for one more year. The “Spring into 2018” Meet and Greet was a huge success and as usual all the volunteers who help support functions like this were out in full force decorating, cooking, serving, and clean up. It was nice to meet new residents and enjoy the company of those snowbirds who have returned North. The first Happy Hour at the Recreation Centre was a wonderful event once again. Summer is here and I think we missed each other./Thank you to Linda Fulmore and the Social Committee for provided food for us. Thanks to Brian Cooper for the music and photos too. On May 24th another PVRA General Meeting was held for the sole purpose of the PVRA Executive Elections. All positions remained the same including myself as the Editor. Continuity at this time is beneficial for the PVRA especially with the ongoing lawyer and management situation. We also had a chance to meet representatives of the Residential Tenancy Branch who provided us with information on what they do and how to contact them. A question and answer period occurred with many residents asking some pretty pointed questions. We as renters must follow protocol and contact the RTB with our questions/issues. When a rent increase is put upon us that is above the guideline it is our duty to go to the RTB office, view the documents, and leave written statements as to why we believe the increase is unfair. There are many people here and especially on the executive who would be more than willing to support anyone’s cause regardless of what the circumstance in the way of helping write a letter or giving some direction. Please remember paperwork is essential to see changes made. We pay rent and expect to be treated fairly, respectfully and without bias. The RTB is in support of that. My final comment - we as residents have only a few options on how to get in touch with Management and they are: 1. Phone number (204-422-8662) or emergency number (204-371-7968) 2. In person through limited hours at the office 3. Via info@myparadisevillage.ca 4. Via Facebook Page - Paradise Village Activities, Events, & Info created by Jill Deschauer. You must ask if you can join first. Every resident should join. Debbie Kokil, Newsletter Editor

Julian’s Joke One woman told me they had birth control in the old west 70 years ago. My husband and I are up in our 90’s.

I said, “What method did you use then?” She said, “We used the box and saucer method.” “The what?” I asked. She replied to me, “My husband was a short man.

When we made love standing up he would stand on this here box and when his eyes got as big as saucers I would kick the box out from under him.”

PARADISE SQUARES

Paradise Squares ended a successful and fun dancing season with our windup on May 8th. There were five squares on the dance floor with caller Ernie throwing in some different and fun calls during the evening. Eight first year dancers were presented with graduation certificates along with a graduation “Hat” cupcake each that were made by caller Ernie’s wife Shirley. Previous to our windup, a number of dancers attended Beausejour Swinging Squares Jamboree on Sunday, May 5th which attracted over 170 dancers. After dancing, a delicious buffet supper was enjoyed. On May 10th Beausejour Swinging Squares had their windup dance with two squares attending from Paradise. All in all, it was a great dancing season. Down the road on Sunday July 29th, will be Ernie & Shirley’s Annual Picnic and BBQ at Anola Community Centre. Paradise Squares start-up dance will be around the middle of September. Larry Trush

Paradise Village Management 8 Paradise Drive, Ste. Anne, MB

May 7, 2018

Dear Justin and JillDeschauer: As a long-term resident on Lakeview Drive, I need to bring your attention to the issue of nesting Canada Geese around the lake. A number of residents have taken upon themselves to protect us from these internationally protected migratory birds. For nearly 11 years without incident, I have enjoyed these birds---spring, summer and fall. This year we have 3 nesting couples (6 geese in total) who have called the lake home. Six geese do not create any kind of health hazard that I am aware of. Over the years, residents of Lakeview have placed string fences around their rental properties with plastic tags or pie plates to keep the birds off their lawns, which I never found to be offensive. This year, however, one particular couple has gone further. They placed a large plastic swan, “paid for by Justin,” in the lake with rope tying it to both sides of the lake. The ropes skim the water and prevent geese from paddling from one side of the lake to the other. One resident made it her mission every time she saw a goose to run around the lake smashing two rocks together to scare them away and to shake the rope vigorously to make the swan bounce to again scare the geese away. This happened many times a day. I was disappointed in the behaviour but thought it would not last. I was mistaken. In addition, they have erected a rope fence three-quarters of the way around the lake to prevent geese from walking up from the lake to graze on the public green space grasses. This one particular act will make it impossible for the geese, as they approach their molting season and are unable to fly, to get into or out of the water. This area is a park area for all—including people, dogs, cats, deer, foxes, turtles, muskrats, and geese, maybe I left out a few other critters. These residents are also preparing to complete the ring around the public area of the lake, supposedly with the “approval of and financial support of Justin.” Is the other lake in Paradise Village being treated in this same way? Just this evening, while I was enjoying the geese from one of the picnic tables, one resident walked around the lake scaring off the three sets of nesting geese with a 6-pack cooler of beer over his shoulder with one open beer in his hand and a baseball bat in the other—looking to do harm to the geese. Earlier in the day, another neighbor came toward a couple of geese around the lake with a shovel in his hand— again looking to do harm to the geese. This same individual returned in the evening on a bicycle, left the pavement, pedalling very fast, and made a bee-line for a goose resting on the grass—again looking to do harm to the goose. The tire marks are still in the dirt. Angered by all of these unnecessary acts of violence toward the geese, I pulled out the string fencing as far as I could. This resulted in a number of residents running out to verbally assault and accost me - one physically assaulted me while another was ready to. An assault complaint was filed with the RCMP. I find myself in the unusual and awkward position of defending these birds when the park should insist 1) that public spaces remain public and not be fenced, 2) that the fountain be the only man-made item in the pond and 3) that residents should leave the birds alone. Fencing off their properties has been an acceptable practise in the past, and I do not know why that practise has not been continued. If the park does not take their responsibilities seriously relating to these birds, to the park area, and to the discord it is creating around the lake, then they should fill in the lake and erect tennis courts or use the space for something else—perhaps a dog park! The issue is yours. Please inform all residents of Lakeview what the policy is as soon as possible before someone or some geese get seriously hurt. Sincerely, Christine Seaberg 3 Lakeview Drive Ste. “No More Time” The Bible refers to a coming era when: “Time shall be no more” (Revelation 10:6) What a momentous “time” that will be! No longer will our lives be ruled by the “tick of a clock”! Of course, this “era” refers to “eternity” – the wonderful future of all those who put their trust in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour. This is the message of that famous Bible verse: St. John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” As God promised the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 29:11,12), He has plans for you and I and all His children: both “a hope and a future” – to receive eternal life and be in his glorious heavenly home for ever. What a future for the child of God! (St. John 14:1-3)

SPECIAL NOTE: The Paradise Village Church continues to have regular SUNDAY MORNING SERVICES at 10 am in the Recreation Centre. Of course everyone is welcome to share in this time of worship, prayer, singing, and sharing. We also enjoy a time of fellowship (and goodies!) following the service – come and be blessed! If you or someone you know stands in need of prayer or help please do not hesitate to call Dennis Hall 204-422-9870.
