Words from the Editor Welcome March! I personally can’t believe how fast the winter has gone by. Soon our snowbirds will be returning, but not before the geese, they seem to be more anxious to return. I saw 3 of them just outside of Winnipeg on February 22, 2017. Whereas our snowbirds, just want to stay and bask in the sun a little bit longer. There are a few things I would like to bring to your attention. • Please try to remember to keep your speed to 20KM per hour and to turn off your high beams

when you enter the Village. • I would like confirmation on who are volunteer drivers to update the list. • There will be a May Annual General Meeting called by President Ludwik Jarco. • Minutes from the October 2016 General Meeting will be included in the April newsletter so please review and keep handy for the May meeting. Reminder, we will be voting on the proposed Bylaws and Constitution changes and looking to fill the positions of Social Chair and Kitchen Chair. Debbie Kokil

The Good Samaritan (Whoever you are) First off my wife and I are semi-handicapped. We both have a hard time getting down the steps to get our Free Press paper. For the last month and a half a good Samaritan has been putting our Free Press paper up on our deck. This is such a tremendous help to us. So we would like to thank this person from the bottom of our hearts. God Bless You. Thanks again 41 Paradise Drive

Hi fellow residents, I came across this Free Press article at https://shar.es/19JtQQ which led me to try the radio station. It’s a commercial free station at 94.7 FM or on-line and it’s also available on MTS TV at 725. The music is from the 40s, 50s & 60s. What a relief to listen to instead of all the noise of other stations. I thought it might be of interest to some of you residents. Wayne Pierce

THE FUNNY BONE On a bitterly cold winter morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, “We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snow plows can get through.” So the good wife went out and moved her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, “We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow plows can get through.” The good wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, “We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park....” Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, “I don’t know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow plows can get through?” Then with the love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blondes exhibit, the husband replied, “Why don’t you just leave the car in the garage this time?”

Hair Pigmentation Deficient Joke (our version of a politically correct blonde joke!!) Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull from the stockyard in a far town so that they can breed their own stock. They only have $600 left. Upon leaving, the brunette tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.” The brunette arrives at the stockyard, inspects the bull,

and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less.

nette only has $1 left. She realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word.

After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.”

After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, “I want you to send her one word: comfortable.”

The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, “It’s just 99 cents a word.” Well, after paying for the bull, the bru-

The operator shakes his head. ‘How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word “comfortable?” The brunette explains, “My sister’s blonde. The word’s big. She’ll read it very slowly ... com-for-da-bull.”

THE HAIRCUT Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting. One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you ‘ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The Congressman was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it. As Ronald Reagan said: BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON!

Physical Activity Tips for Staying Fit Physical activity plays an important role in your health, well-being and quality of life. These tips will help you improve and maintain your health by being physically active every day. Provided by Public Health Agency of Canada www.publichealth.gc.ca Tips to Get Active • Take part in at least 2.5 hours of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. • Spread out the activities into sessions of 10 minutes or more. • It is beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least twice a week. This will help your posture and balance. Tips to help you get active • Find an activity you like such as swimming or cycling. • Minutes count — increase your activity level 10 minutes at a time. Every little bit helps. • Active time can be social time — look for group activities or classes in your community, or get your family or friends to be active with you. 4. Walk wherever and whenever you can. 5. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, when possible.

The Health Benefits of Being Active • Improve your balance • Reduce falls and injuries • Help you stay independent longer • Help prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and premature death Aerobic activity, like pushing a lawn mower, taking a dance class, or biking to the store, is continuous movement that makes you feel warm and breathe deeply. Strengthening activity, like lifting weights or yoga, keeps muscles and bones strong and prevents bone loss. It will also improve your balance and posture. What is moderate aerobic activity? Moderate-intensity aerobic activity makes you breathe harder and your heart beat faster. You should be able to talk, but not sing. Examples of moderate activity include walking quickly or bike riding.

>>> Every step counts! If you’re not active now, adding any amount of physical activity can bring some health benefits. Take a step in the right direction. Start now and slowly increase your physical activity to meet the recommendations. >>> More physical activity provides greater health benefits! That means the more you do, the better you’ll feel. Get active and see what you can accomplish! Move more! >>> Is physical activity safe for everyone? The recommended level of physical activity applies to all adults aged 65 years and older who do not have a suspected or diagnosed medical condition. Consult a health professional if you are unsure about the types and amounts of physical activity most appropriate for you.

What is vigorous aerobic activity? Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity makes your heart rate increase quite a bit and you won’t be able to say more than a few words without needing to catch your breath. Examples of vigorous activity include jogging or crosscountry skiing.

What are strengthening activities? Muscle-strengthening activities build up your muscles. With bone-strengthening activities, your muscles push and pull against your bones. This helps make your bones stronger. Examples of musclestrengthening activities include climbing stairs, digging in the garden, lifting weights, push-ups and curl-ups. Examples of bone-strengthening activities include yoga, walking and running.

Laughter is the Best Medicine An old geezer became very bored in retirement and decided to open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: “Dr. Geezer’s clinic. Get your treatment for $500, if not cured, get back $1,000.” Doctor “Young,” who was positive that this old geezer didn’t know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000. So he went to Dr. Geezer’s clinic. Dr. Young: “Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me ??” Dr. Geezer: “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young’s mouth.” Dr. Young: Aaagh !! -- “This is Gasoline!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You’ve got your taste back. That will be $500. Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money. Dr. Young: “I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything.” Dr. Geezer: “Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient’s mouth.” Dr. Young: “Oh, no you don’t, -- that is Gasoline!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You’ve got your memory back . That will be $500.” Dr. Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days. Dr. Young: “My eyesight has become weak --- I can hardly see anything!!!!” Dr. Geezer: “Well, I don’t have any medicine for that so, “ Here’s your $1000 back.” (giving him a $10 bill) Dr. Young: “But this is only $10!” Dr. Geezer: “Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500.” Moral of story -- Just because you’re “Young” doesn’t mean that you can outsmart an “old Geezer”

Ten Things You Didn’t Know about the Movie Titanic Titanic united both male and female moviegoers – guys who wanted to watch a tense, gripping, story about a historical tragedy and girls who loved the romance between Jack and Rose (and who loved looking at Leonardo DiCaprio even more). So much has been discussed and debated about the film since its release 17 years ago that you would think there’s nothing left to talk about with regard to it. However, here are ten things you might not have known about Titanic. The studio reportedly wanted Tom Cruise or Matthew McConaughey for the role of Jack Dawson Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t a big star until after Titanic hit theaters. He ultimately proved to be the perfect fit for Jack Dawson, as Leo exemplified that youthful honesty and energy that makes the romance between Jack and Rose so compelling. And even though Tom Cruise or Matthew McConaughey’s notoriety may have seemed more attracted to the studio, I honestly can’t picture either of those two guys in the part. Cruise is too smarmy and would not have been able to capture Jack’s earnestness, while McConaughey appears to hardened and rough for this type of heartfelt romantic role. Without the present day scenes in the film, Titanic would run 2 hours and 40 minutes, the exact amount of time it took the ship Titanic to sink This is one of those “too weird” type of coincidences that can’t really be explained. The fact that the past scenes

in the movie, which recreate the sinking of the Titanic and the death of so many of its passengers, clocked in at the same amount of time as the actual sinking is just plain eerie. It’s one of those facts that you just can’t make up, and it only amplifies the already present ghostly, melancholy quality of the film. Even though Jack Dawson was a fictitious character, there was a real J. Dawson who died on the Titanic Similar to how all the scenes that take place in the past add up to the actual Titanic’s sinking time, the fact that there was an actual J. Dawson on boar of the Titanic is another one of those eerie coincidences. Apparently, while writing the script for Titanic, James Cameron was not aware of this J. Dawson but just happened to choose the name “Jack Dawson” for the main male character. Now this has me speculating if Rose was a real character or not also… Jack and Rose’s spitting scene was almost entirely improvised The infamous spitting scene from Titanic, where Jack makes such a wonderful impression on Rose’s upper class mother, was supposedly almost entire improvised. Knowing this, in my opinion, just makes the scene even better because you can really see the friendship forming between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet during this scene. The chemistry that the two share is just unbelievable, and they’ve remained incredibly close to this day. Titanic was the first film to have two people nominated

for an Oscar for portraying the same character Both Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart received Oscar nominations their performances as younger and older Rose, respectively. Winslet was nominated for Best Lead Actress, while Stuart got a nod for Best Supporting Actress. Shockingly, this was the first time that any two actors, male or female, had been nominated for Academy Awards for the playing the same character. It happened again in 2001 when Judi Dench and Kate Winslet (yet again) were nominated for the film Iris. Kate Winslet didn’t wear a wetsuit while filming For future reference, cold water can get you sick. During the entirety of production on Titanic, Kate Winslet would not wear a wetsuit during scenes that took place in the water, no matter how cold it got. This turned out to be quite the bad idea for Kate, as she ended up getting pneumonia, causing her to almost quit the production. Thankfully, Kate got better and stayed on the film, allowing all of us viewers to enjoy her pitch perfect performance as Rose. (For the record, I’m kind of in love with Kate Winslet and her acting abilities. Reportedly, the first cut of Titanic was 36 hours long I say “reportedly” because this fact only comes from the film’s Oscar winning composer, James Korner. I feel like he must be exaggerating a little bit because for one thing, I don’t believe that they actually got that much footage and also because that would mean that James Cameron is entirely insane.

Actually, the more I sit with the second part of that statement, the more possible I think it might becomes. Cameron is a tad bit eccentric and is well-known for making his films incredibly long. Madonna was considered for the role of Rose Picture Tom Cruise and Madonna as Jack and Rose – we have a totally different Titanic film, don’t we? Fortunately, as was the case with Cruise and McConaughey, the Material Girl’s casting never came to be. And honestly, that’s the best thing that could have happened. I have nothing personally against Madonna, but James Cameron had to know that if Titanic wanted to be taken seriously as a film, it need real, vibrant performances from its actors. Kate Winslet, who is easily one of the best actresses of her generation, was much more equipped for that job than any other actress could have possibly been. Gloria Stuart (who played the elderly, present day version of Rose) was the only person involved with the film who was actually alive during the Titanic’s maiden voyage in 1912 Gloria Stuart was born on July 4, 1910, so even though she wasn’t involved with any of the past scenes that occur on the Titanic in the film, she was the only person on set that was actually alive for the real life event, even if she wasn’t even two years old when it happened. Stuart, like the character of Rose, lived to see 100. She passed away in her sleep in September of 2010 after battling lung cancer for five years.

Baseball in Heaven Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives. When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day. One day Barb said, “Rose, we both loved playing women’s softball all our lives, and we played it all through High School. Please do me one favour: when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s women’s softball there.” Rose looked up at Barb from her deathbed, “Barb,

you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you.” Shortly after that, Rose passed on.

“You’re not Rose. Rose just died.” “I’m telling you, it’s me, Rose,” insisted the voice. “Rose! Where are you?”

At midnight a couple of nights later, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, “Barb, Barb.”

“In Heaven,” replied Rose. “I have some really good news and a little bad news.”

“Who is it?” asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?”

“The good news,” Rose said, “is that there’s softball in Heaven.

“Barb -- it’s me, Rose.”

Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before

“Tell me the good news first,” said Barb.

us are here, too. Better than that, we’re all young again. Better still, it’s always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.” “That’s fantastic,” said Barb.. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news?” “You’re pitching Tuesday.”

March 2017 This time of year we open our home to family and friends who fly to Tampa and spend time soaking up sun in the pool or at nearby beaches. EVELYN FILLION of Paradise Village has joined us for 9 days, following two weeks with CAROL and FRED ARCHAMBAULT in Dade City, who accompanied her on her first Caribbean cruise. Now, we’re touring to Ste. Augustine, the Tampa Bay area, Busch Gardens, Sarasota, then on to an upscale all-you-caneat dinner theatre which features the hit Broadway musical production of Saturday Night Fever. Continuing our journey we’ll drop by the annual 12 day Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City for the best of free big name country entertainers like Willie Nelson...and of course mouth-watering strawberry shortcake and whipped cream piled high. Meanwhile, the past 4 months has blessed us with perfect weather, the best ever really... no hurricanes or floods, mostly above 70 degrees fahrenheit with sunshine. Definitely not missing home yet...just our Paradise family. Respectfully, Ila and Brian Cooper.

Here it is March already! March: the “transition month,” at least in Manitoba, a time of change from winter, to hopefully, spring.

Now, a lot of us older folks just don’t like “change!” But this one (from winter to spring) I think I can say that nearly everyone is happy with – especially after a long and hard winter.

But isn’t life full of changes? Some we like (such as finding a wonderful helpmate) but others... Getting “old” for instance: “The saying is: “The old gray mare she ain’t what she used to be!” But neither is the ancient sway-backed stallion, that young prancing stud of yesteryear. I’m sure we could fill this month’s newsletter with lists of the “pro’s and con’s” of life’s changes!

However, there is One that never changes: never has, never will: God, the Heavenly Father and Jesus our precious Saviour.

Their love, mercy, and grace toward us is unchanging and without limits. The Father so wonderfully demonstrated that when He gave us His son to be our Saviour (St. John 3:16.)

We can always count on Him to be there for us and with us forever!

Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.
