Words from the Editor Welcome to the Month of May. Two more months of work for me at the school and summer break. No rest of course because I need to supplement my income so I also work at Lilac Resort. What a great place, too. I love meeting new people and greeting many of my fellow students, parents, and friends from the Ste. Anne English Schools and surrounding area. Maybe I will see some of you at the Lilac Resort too! The bands on the weekends are amazing and worth a few mosquito bites. Let’s also hope for a warm and sunny summer ahead despite the cold this last week of April. The month of May will be busy too with the Annual General Meeting on the 8th, the Spring Tea on the 10th,
the Membership Dues Drive on the 16th, 23rd and 25th, and the Paradise Village Annual Garage Sale June 2nd and 3rd, just to name a few (check the calendar). Be sure to go and meet Paulette and Joanne and pay your 2017-18 Membership Dues. The fees cover expenses for social activities (food, entertainment, decorations, prizes, etc.), repairs to equipment (exercise, kitchen, woodworking room, etc.), insurance and fees, and printing supplies. The Membership also gets you a copy of the Newsletter every month and the local phonebook ready for June 1st this year. (Both are paid for with advertising dollars.) Have a great month. Debbie Kokil

In Appreciation From Resident John Calder I lost my light-weight, willow walking stick that I had for several years, about a week or so ago. Between my arthritis and using a leg brace, I truly missed my walking stick. Fortunately, I had a second, heavier, but more awkward to use, pine walking stick that I was able to use. You can imagine my most pleasant surprise on April 25, when I was just finishing an hour’s walk with my two dogs, to find my missing walking stick resting against my truck. To say the very least, I was extremely happy. I was not only happy for the stick’s return, but even happier to realize that I lived in such a caring community. A very big “THANK-YOU” to the individual(s) who took the time and effort to get my walking-stick back to me. John Calder

President’s Message Looks like the majority of residents are back in Paradise. Apparently lots of Social Functions took place over the winter months, and the Social Committee is to be congratulated for all their efforts. It is not as enjoyable as going to a warmer climate for the winter, but when activities are planned, and social events are in place, these help to speed up the weeks and months. According to reports I have received over the last four to five months, the Management team handled the snow clearing and other issues in an acceptable and timely manner, and we thank them for this. Spring has already bestowed upon the Management Team some challenges, ie. Water pressure issues as well as drainage. We are all anxious to get out in our yards and rake, clean up and start planting. Let’s hope the weather co-operates for everyone. Your Social Committee has many functions planned for this year and we hope you will do your best to support their efforts. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at our AGM Meeting on May 8th at 7:00pm in our Recreation Centre. Ludwik Jarco President

Julian’s Joke of the Month Turning 16, I went to my Dad to get my driver’s license. I told him all my friends have their licenses and some of them even have cars. I wanted my license so bad. There’s more you can do with a car, than just drive it. Oh! I wanted that car so bad. On Saturday night I said to my Dad, “I want my license.” He said, “You got long hair, you walk, you got poor grades in school, you walk, you hang around with your bum friends, your walk.” Pretty soon I got better grades in school. Got rid of my bum friends and made new friends. Lined up a bunch of cheer-leaders, I wanted to get ready, just
in case I got the car. I did the chores for my Mom. I went to my Dad. “Dad,” I said, “I did everything you asked me. I want my license.” He looked at me and said, “You got long hair, you walk.” We just had our first big argument. I said, “Dad, you are so unreasonable. I went to the priest and we looked in the Bible, it said, Jesus had long hair.” Dad said, “That’s right! And Jesus walked.”

Paradise Village Singles April 2017 The April Singles dinner was held at Vida Bowyer’s home on Monday, April 3rd with 16 of us in attendance. As Vida was working with only one arm she had her good friend in from Winnipeg to help. Great to see Marie again! There were actually two ladies with their arms in a cast, both Vida and Doreen, but that did not deter either of them. Good to see some of the new people coming out and some of the snow birds returning. As usual the food was outstanding and we had a lovely cake to celebrate the April birthdays of Mike, Alice and Larry. The next Singles will be on Monday, May 1st, 5:00 pm at Vivian Deurbrouck’s, 66 Village Drive. All singles are welcome and if you plan to attend please give Viv a call at 422-8049.

God’s Plan for Aging From Frank Leys Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have
additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good. So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember its God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.
Nine Important Facts to Remember As We Grow Older #9) Death is the number one killer in the world. #8) Life is sexually transmitted.
#7) Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
#3) All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
#6) Men have 2 motivations: hunger and hanky panky, and they can’t tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.
#2) In the 60’s, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.
#5) Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won’t bother you for weeks, months, maybe years unless you give them your email address.
#1) Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.
#4) Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.
Please share this wisdom with others while I go to the bathroom.

Don’t know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers who have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the United States, especially burn victims There are some buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a Hotel where soldiers’ families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying on base, but as you can imagine, they are almost filled most of the time. While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a
tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his cheque book out and wrote a cheque for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it The question is - why do: Britney Spears, Madonna, Tom Cruise and other Hollywood fluff make front page news with their ridiculous antics and Denzel Washington’s charity doesn’t even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the local newspaper in San Antonio?

“Introduction” by M. C. (Craig) Fair Don’t let your worries get you down Don’t ever stoop to wear a frown, Each morn will bring some sunshine bright To chase away the darkest night. This poem was written by Mr. Jerry Ferguson’s (62 Village Drive) Mother. As the Editor, I would like to create a space in honour of his mother and showcase the many poems she created in her lifetime. In fact, the family compiled her poetry into a book titled “Rambling Rhymes.” It was a pleasure to meet Jerry and his wife Betty a few months ago. They have lived in Paradise Village for more than 15 years, might even be over 20 if I remember correctly. Jerry is a retired RCMP officer and really wanted to add something different to our little newsletter and that is why he contacted me. We laughed about life, talked about family, reminisced about Jerry’s career, Betty’s support, and their 4 children + many grandchildren (who all live far away.) In the months to follow I would like to post several if not all of her poems, a few articles that Constable Ferguson has published in the RCMP quarterly and two trips they both enjoyed – Cruises. Thank you Jerry and Betty for wanting to share your life with us, and for contacting me. I truly enjoyed meeting you both. Debbie Kokil

Know your Cholesterol! Reduce your Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke! High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) is commonly measured to assess the risk of heart disease. If you’ve had a blood sample drawn for assessment of lipid panel you probably already know if your cholesterol level is acceptable or not. You might also recall something about good and bad cholesterol and the ratio between these two. The “good” and “bad” has to do with the type of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol molecules in our blood stream. A standard cholesterol test provides information about total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is often termed “the bad cholesterol” because high levels are associated with increased risk of heart disease. On the other hand, HDL cholesterol is usually nicknamed “the good cholesterol” because high blood levels are associated with less risk of heart disease whereas low concentrations are correlated with increased risk. In other words, there is an inverse relationship between HDL cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. (Meaning the higher the HDL, the lower the risk of heart disease). It is believed that the HDL’s act as a scavenger, picking up
excess bad cholesterol in the bloodstream and hauling it to the liver where it gets broken down and excreted. If you have high LDL and low HDL cholesterol levels, your Doctor or Nurse Practitioner will probably focus on lowering your LDL cholesterol first. Medications known as statins (such as lipitor or zocor) are the most common treatment for high LDL cholesterol. People who have naturally higher levels of HDL cholesterol are at lower risk of heart attack and stroke. So... How do i increase my HDL? The best way to increase HDL is to increase exercise level. How good the HDL usually reflect how active a person is on a regular basis. Other ways to improve good cholesterol is to quit smoking and eat a healthy diet. This includes increasing your intake of fibre as well as healthy fats such as flax, olive oil (warm or cool only), avocado and raw mixed nuts (unsalted of course). **Be sure to avoid trans-fats which increase Bad cholesterol and decrease your good cholesterol Food prepared with shortening such as cake and cookies contain trans fats as well as fried or deep fried foods and most margarines. Some evidence shows that 4 oz red wine daily is connected
to higher HDL levels. Be careful because too much alcohol will cause weight gain, and increase blood pressure and some fat levels in your blood. There are some medications that can help to improve your good cholesterol numbers, but the evidence doesn’t show that these medication-induced increases actually prevent heart disease. Ii is the lifestyle changes (nutrition) and exercise that make the MOST difference overall in reducing heart attack and stroke. How do I figure out my LDL and HDL numbers? You can see your family doctor for blood tests and ask for your numbers, or you can contact your local mobile nurse practitioner (NP) on wheels services. The local NP private service can even provide you medical care in your home as well as draw the fasting blood-
work while she is there!! OK, so what should my numbers be? FYI…The ideal HDL number is greater than 1.5 and the ideal LDL number varies depending on what medical conditions you have. For example, if you have diabetes or have had a stroke, the LDL goal is less than 2.0. If you have less health risk, then the goal would be to have your LDL less than 2.5. The Timely Care Nurse Practitioner on wheels clinic service (Based out of Richer MB) can analyze your health risk and give you some idea about where your ideal cholesterol values should be to prevent heart attacks and stroke. Feel free to book an appointment by visiting www.timelycareclinic. com, call at 1-844-765-5569 or email dispatch@timelycareclinic.com.

Ten Things You Didn’t Know about the Movie “Mary Poppins” 1. It took about 20 years for Mary Poppins to get made. Walt first went after the rights to make the film in 1938, which was four years after P.L. Travers released the first book, Mary Poppins. Despite the author turning him down, Walt never gave up. He sent his brother Roy to ask her again in 1944, but the answer was still no. It wasn’t until 1959, when Walt went to see her in person that she finally said yes. The film finally was released on August 27, 1964. 2. Walt Disney had a personal connection to the film. Walt already admired the story, but it was his daughter Diane who convinced him to make the movie. She loved the books growing up and thought there was something there for Walt to create. 3. Walt often called the Sherman brothers on the phone and asked them to play one of the songs from the movie. It’s a known fact that “Feed the Birds” was one of Walt Disney’s favorite songs of all time. According to Richard Sherman, Walt used to call him up on Fridays to play the song. When he was finished, Walt would thank him and tell him it was just what he needed. Richard Sherman sang it in his honor at the dedication ceremony of the Partners Statue of Walt and Mickey at Disneyland. 4. Dick Van Dyke didn’t
have much experience with singing and dancing before playing Bert. In fact, he never had any dance training prior to the film, and was a bit nervous about doing it for the movie. The good news is, he caught on quickly and has been dancing and singing ever since–very well, we might add. 5. The “Step in Time” sequence was only supposed to last two minutes. Early in production, there was a request to cut the lengthy “Step in Time” sequence down to two minutes. Instead, Walt decided to make it even longer. The finished version ended up being 14 minutes long after adding the chimney sweeps’ gravity-defying moves. 6. Matthew Garber (Michael) was actually afraid of heights. That obviously made the flying sequence tough. To convince him to go up on a wire for the scenes that involved special effects, filmmakers would offer the young actor a dime. Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews fondly recalled this instance on the special features of the Mary Poppins DVD. According to them, he made “a little fortune” off of it. 7. Filmmakers knew Julie Andrews was the perfect fit for Mary Poppins after seeing her on the Ed Sullivan Show. After seeing her perform
“What Do the Simple Folks Do” from the Broadway musical Camelot, Walt Disney went backstage and offered her the role. Andrews’ husband at the time, Tony Walton, also happened to be backstage. When he mentioned that he designed sets and costumes, Walt told him to bring his portfolio–which eventually led to him landing the job as the film’s costume designer. 8. Mary Poppins won five Academy Awards. Of its 13 Academy Award nominations, the film won an Oscar for the following: Best Actress in a Leading Role (Julie Andrews), Best Film Editing, Best Effects/Special Effects, Best Original Song (for “Chim Chim Cher-ee”), and Best Original Score. 9. The song “Sister Suffragette” convinced Glynis Johns to play Mrs. Banks. When casting for Mrs. Banks, Walt always knew he wanted Glynis Johns to take on the role. However, when
she was first approached, the actress thought they wanted her to play Mary Poppins. Since she wasn’t offered the lead, she told them she would do it if they gave her a musical number–which the Sherman brothers were immediately tasked with writing. They landed on “Sister Suffragette,” which she absolutely loved. 10. The special effects were ahead of their time. In addition to cutting-edge puppeteering and audio-animatronics (like the bird on Mary Poppins’ finger in the “A Spoonful of Sugar” sequence), there were a ton of advanced special effects that made the movie magical. The “I Love to Laugh” sequence, for instance, featured wires to make the characters look like they were floating. To ensure the audience didn’t catch on to the wires, filmmakers had to vary shots (between close-ups and long shots), and would also rotate the room.

23 From Paradise Guy A man’s daughter died this year at the age of 34. When he inquired about her CPP he was told that because she was not married and had no children, the money now belonged to the government. Nobody else was entitled to it. On Sun, Nov 6, 2016 at 10:06 AM -0500, “Allan Scott” <ajscott1947@gmail.com > wrote: WHEN THE CPP WAS PUT IN PLACE BY THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY IN 1965 IT WAS MEANT TO ASSIST PEOPLE THAT DID NOT HAVE A PENSION. EMPLOYEES PUT IN A PER-CENT AND THE EMPLOYER DOUBLED THE EMPLOYEES INPUT. THERE IS NO MONEY IN THE CPP FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA. FOR A FEE FROM THE POOL THE GOVERNMENT WAS SUPPOSED TO MAKE THE POOL GROW. WE AS CANADIANS ARE GETTING LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT THAT POOL SHOULD BE PAYING OUT EVERY MONTH. WE ARE BEING CHEATED OUT OF SOME-
THING THAT IS LEGALLY OURS, NOT THE GOVERNMENTS. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY THE SUPREME COURT??????? Good information for our families and friends -- keep passing this around until everyone has read it. THOSE WHO WENT BEFORE: One very major thing wrong with the government’s calculations of ‘available CPP’ is that they forgot to figure in the people WHO DIED BEFORE THEY EVER COLLECTED A CPP CHEQUE!!!!! WHERE DID THAT MONEY GO? Also, please ponder these additional 5 points........ THE MATH: Remember, not only did you and I contribute to CPP but your employer did, too. It totalled 15% of your income before taxes. If you averaged only $30K over your working life (say 45 years), that’s $202,500. Read that again. Did you see where the Government paid in one single penny? THE INTEREST: We are talking about the money you and your employer put in a Government bank to insure
you and I that we would have a retirement cheque from the money we put in, not the Government. If you calculate the future invested value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer’s contribution) at a simple 5% interest, after 49 years of working you’d have $892,919.98. THE SCHEME: If you took out only 3% per year, you’d receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years (until you’re 95 if you retire at age 65) and that’s with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you’d have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month. These losers in Ottawa have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever did! They call CPP an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives, and now when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why does the government keep using it as their general piggy bank? THE ENTITLEMENT: They are calling CPP payouts an entitlement. ENTITLEMENT my foot, I
paid cash for my CPP! Just because they borrowed the money for other government spending, doesn’t make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!! Example: Think about senator entitlements we pay for; --- free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days. Now that’s welfare, and they have the nerve to call my CPP retirement payments entitlements? THE REFUGEES: The latest estimate (as per Global News) is that it is going to cost SIX HUNDRED MILLION ($600,000,000) to bring in the 25,000 refugees. The government (according to the Public Accounts office) is already FIVE BILLION in the hole. How much more will they take from our CPP to cover this expense? The Immigration Minister, John McCallum, in a recent Global interview, said that he was presenting his plan to Cabinet shortly. He could not be pinned down as to cost. Will they write a blank cheque out of our CPP? The new philosophy is refugees 1st, Canadians last. Who stands on guard for us???

WHAT DOES GOD LOOK LIKE?
A little girl was drawing a picture in her Sunday school class as the teacher walked by and asked: “Mary, what are you drawing a picture of?” “I’m drawing a picture of God,” she replied. “Oh, but Mary, no one really knows what God looks like!” Well,” responded Mary, “they will when I get my picture done!” What DOES God look like? I can tell you in one word: L-O-V-E! The Bible says: “God IS love” (I John 4:16). Not just, God “shows love” or God “has love” but He IS love: that’s His entire nature. To get a fuller picture of the God of love, read all of the Bible, book of I John, but the whole Bible is filled with His love. Perhaps the most wonderful truth is the fact that God loves us and pours His love into our lives, if we will but believe and receive Him. And His greatest “gift of love” to us is His Son Jesus to be our Saviour. (St. John 3:16) Here’s wishing you God’s love and His blessings today and every day!
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service.
