PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

President’s Message Let’s start off by recapping the wonderful September we have left behind. The residents of Paradise Village enjoyed another fantastic “Happy Hour” hosted by Vida Bowyer at her home on Nature Drive. As usual, the turnout was spectacular and a good time was had by all. Chili Fest was the most successful event ever. The decorating was outstanding. The food and snacks were superb. The entertainment kept us all “on our toes” and up on the dance floor. Many thanks go out to Linda Fulmore,

Ilene Goschke, Carmel Maynard and the decorating committee as well as the many volunteers that make all of our events so memorable. The Paradise Village Management hosted a wonderful “Gala Extravaganza” in support of the Ste. Anne Hospital, which drew locals from Ste. Anne, Steinbach, and surrounding areas. The winner of the playhouse, as we understand, was from Richer. All proceeds were presented to the Ste. Anne Hospital, along with monies raised by your PVRA and the generous support of its members. We also saw work being done by Management and

Owners of Paradise Village on the “Patio” just adjacent to the workshop and BBQ area. I am certain it will be well used in the future and will be a terrific asset to everyone in the Village. We will be experiencing a busy October with Thanksgiving festivities planned as well as Halloween. Please keep your eyes and ears open for the dates, etc. which will be posted at your mail box locations. The good news continues with the residents banding together and planning numerous social functions at their own residences, keeping the continued positive

attitude within our Village. Keep checking the Bulletin Boards at your mail boxes for dates and locations of future events. Remember, “All Village Residents” are always welcome. Finally, a reminder that our General Meeting will be held at the Recreation Centre on October 11, 2017 (Wednesday) at 7:00 pm. An update to our last meeting will be provided and hopefully the turnout for this meeting will be as good as our last one in July. Ludwik Jarco “Proudly” President of PVRA

Words from the Editor Well, what a summer 2017 turned out to be. At first it seemed like it would never stop raining and warm up, but boy when it did it was awesome. Together with the great weather came all of the wonderful events and get-togethers as well. The best part about summer too was the wonderful camaraderie of the PVRA and residents. The meeting in July showed a common concern and a want to continue having an association where it supports the residents here in Paradise Village. Unfortunately some residents did not agree and have chosen

to cancel memberships along the way. That is a shame. The fear of personal attack for seeking legal advice, regarding our tenancy rights, overwhelmed some and I understand that. I for one feel that action is required when things are not right. This is our home and the Recreation Centre is our common room. We deserve to be treated fairly and respectfully and receive what has been promised to us in our lease agreements. Despite the ups and downs, the residents here in Paradise Village have banded together to go forward and enjoy the lives we came here to live. The many Happy Hours, the Corn

roast/Pork on a bun, Pansy Fall Supper, and Chili Fest (Thank you Mr. Al Deshauer for your commitment to getting us back into the Recreation Centre) has made this summer a summer to remember. I know that we as residents have become closer and more caring for each other and that our time together has just begun. The future looks brighter. Speaking of the Chili Fest, I have never attended a more organized or entertaining event since my Mom and I moved here in 2013. The feeling of the residents was absolute joy and friendship. The Recreation Centre was appropriately decorated with a Western Theme

and most everyone joined in by dressing up. The Chili and fixin’s was very good as was the entertainment, 2 local gentlemen from Ste. Anne. I would love to see them back again; we just need more dance floor. Congratulations to Marv Zubrin and his team of artists for all the wonderful displays and paintings. To all the volunteers who created the decorations hats off to you as well! If this is any indication of what the PVRA can accomplish, look out folks, we are all in for a wonderful and fulfilling ride. Debbie Kokil, Editor

Joy Morrison organized a putting contest, which was won, second year in a row, by Margaret Rougeau. We enjoyed a luncheon afterwards at the Clubhouse. EXPERIENCE CROATIA AND THE ADRIATIC COAST Spring is right around the corner and with it comes an ideal time for a European vacation. If you are thinking it is time to break away and do something new and exciting then Europe is the place for you. Today I would like to talk to you about Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe is a region that encompasses many different cultures, ethnicities, languages, and histories. It’s important to note that the countries broadly classified as being a part of Eastern Europe have one thing in common: they were all behind the Iron Curtain before its fall. This helps us define a region whose development has been very different from that of Western Europe. Fortunately for you, Eastern Europe is full of things to see and do - including visiting museums, churches, and castles, taking nature walks, or historical tours. UNESCO World Heritage sites have been marked as special cultural and historical interest in Eastern Europe. Croatia has recently been branded as the fashionable new escape for the rich and famous with it’s crystal turquoise waters, sun drenched Adriatic coast and vast national parks. But the Roman ruins, medieval towns, fishermen and quiet alcoves offer a paradise that represents much more than a passing fad. A wonderful way to experience Europe is by Escorted tour. Why an escorted group tour? They are very repu-

table and a great way to see a lot in a short time. These tours offer a wealth of history and information in a stress-free vacation. Throw away your guide book and let the tour guide do all the planning for hotels, tours, meals etc. Your guide will also be your entertainer, interpreter and history professor, literally a walking encyclo-pedia. The best part is making new friends with your fellow group travellers. As you all know by my advertising in your PVRA newspaper, I am also a travel advisor. I escort group tours several times a year to different locations. I am currently offering to escort a group tour to Croatia and the beautiful Adriatic coast in April. If any of you would like to know more about this trip of a lifetime please contact me at the number below. This particular tour has an early booking bonus that will expire first week of October. These group tours include your airfare, hotel, tours, many meals and all stress-free! I would love to hear from you or answer any questions you may have about this exiting destination! Good Communication Between Patients and Practitioners Essential in Health Care From obtaining the patient’s medical history to conveying a treatment plan, the health care provider’s relationship with their patient is built on effective communication. In these clinic visits, both verbal and nonverbal forms of communication constitute this essential feature of medical care. A lot of the communication in these visits is typically information-sharing about diagnosis and therapy options. BUT, many visits are patients searching for a psychosocial healing connection or therapeutic relationship. For example, a patient with broken relationships with family, friends, coworkers, or the community in general, will often struggle when describing his illness and symptoms for the first time. That patient’s contact with his/her provider is often a first step toward reconnection. You can see just how important

it is for the provider to listen to patient concerns, provide comfort and healing, and build the relationship in general. Good communication and this healing aspect also form the basis for quality health care. Research into the degree of true care used by providers in patient-provider communication has been shown to improve patient outcomes. One study reported that the quality of communication in the clinic visit had a positive influence on patient outcomes in 76% of patients. Patient results influenced by good communication include emotional health, resolving of symptoms, function, pain control; and other things such blood pressure level or blood sugar levels. Effective and caring communication is so important. For example, patient anxiety was reduced in patients whose providers encouraged questions and also encouraged them to share in the

decision-making process. These good communication skills have been associated with better adherence to therapy, better understanding of treatment risks and happier patients! There is definitely high value in effective communication in disease prevention, health maintenance, and qualityof-life. There is proof that effective direct human communication and support improves quality of medical care. This will help to have better chronic disease control, less emergency department visits and increased patient satisfaction! Good

communication in medical care cannot be forgotten!! For information about Nurse Practitioners as unique medical providers in our health care system, call 1-877-510-1729 or email dispatch@nponwheels.com for details. If you would like a presentation done in your community, notify us and we will be happy to come speak to you about what we do.

6 Things You Didn’t Know About Saturday Night Fever “Saturday Night Fever” turns 40 this year, and you know what? You should be dancin’, yeah! When it premiered in 1977, the movie was an instant sensation, propelling John Travolta from “Welcome Back, Kotter” star to international celebrity. It also gave the Bee Gees a new lease on life as a disco band, and transformed how movies could use music to tell a story. But while we may remember the iconic white suit Travolta’s Tony Manero wore, or the flashing lights of the disco floor at Brooklyn’s 2001 Odyssey Club, or tunes like “How Deep Is Your Love,” there’s much more to “Saturday Night Fever” than a bunch of dance sequences and images of Tony strutting down the sidewalk. Here are six things you might not have known about the film — which deserves a fresh twirl on the floor! 1. John Travolta was so popular it was almost impossible to film on location. The first day of shooting was a near riot, as 15,000 people turned out on the streets to try and get a glimpse at Travolta. “One time John and I were in the makeup trailer, and it started rocking,” Donna Pescow, who played Tony’s former dance partner and hopeful girlfriend, told TODAY.

“People were shaking the trailer to make him come out to do autographs.” Director John Badham came up with a clever idea: send out a decoy car rigged up with cameras as if Travolta was inside and lure away the crowds before sending out the real one. “That worked for about 1 millionth of a second,” he told TODAY. “Finally, we realized: if we’re going to be on the streets, we have to wake up literally at dawn and get the shots. If we could be out by 9 a.m. we were in great shape.” 2. The movie was inspired by a New York magazine article called “Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night.” The article by Nik Cohn, which was published on June 7, 1976, noted that Manhattan was still “firmly rooted in the sixties” and all the cool kids were in the boroughs, dancing their nights away. The original article, which focuses on a Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, dancer named Vincent, is still a terrific read and can be found here. 3. It was only director Badham’s second feature film. Badham had “just finished ruining my career” by refusing to direct Diana Ross (who was 30 years old then) as Dorothy in “The Wiz” when he got a look at the script for what would become “Saturday Night

Fever.” “I grew up in Alabama and had never been to Brooklyn in my life, but these characters spoke to me,” he said. “Two hours after I got the script I’d read it and was running around the house yelling, I was so glad to get to do this.” 4. Neither Badham nor Pescow knew much about disco. “I didn’t even know what disco was,” Pescow recalled. “I was very into Carole King and Stevie Wonder.” Badham, meanwhile, largely saw his way in through the dancing. “When I started looking at disco really closely, I thought, ‘They’re doing the fox trot!’ We could take any kind of dance move, from tango to salsa to waltz and do it to disco music, which is what we did. You just work it to the beat of the music.” 5. Fans aside, shooting in Brooklyn was not without peril. One day when the crew arrived to shoot at 2001 Odyssey early in the morning, they noticed there’d been a bit of a disco inferno: A fire had singed the front doors. “At first we thought there was some homeless guy trying to get warm here,” recalled Badham. But then “a long-finned Cadillac rolled up and some very large men came out.” They found the production manager and, as Badham

reports, said, “We hear you boys had a little barbecue last night. We’re here to help you out with that and make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The “helpers” asked for $3,500 to take care of matters, and Badham happily paid. “If they’d said $10,000, we’d have screamed our head off,” he admitted. 6. Audiences may have come for the dancing, but they stayed for the story. One reason “Saturday Night Fever” remains so memorable is that it goes deeper than disco: It’s really a dark coming-of-age story about a young man who starts to see the bigger picture of his life, and learns how to actually have a female friend. (Revolutionary!) “Early on the critics were like, ‘it’s kind of vulgar,’ but it sold out the houses, every day,” said Badham. “I was told that when Barry Diller, who ran (distributor) Paramount at the time, got the opening weekend grosses he yelled at the poor guy who reported them, saying there were ‘too many zeros’ here.” In the end, the film would gross $94 million in the U.S., or $358 million adjusted for 2017. The soundtrack sold more than 15 million albums and was at No. 1 on the Billboard charts for 18 weeks. Guess that $3,500 was money well spent!

THE CHURCH IS HERE FOR YOU! We are not designed to be “Ivory Towers” (independent of, unconnected to others, & relying only on self.) We need other people in our lives – people who will love us, encourage us, and help us – sometimes to just be a “listening ear” or perhaps a “shoulder to cry on”. People to whom we, in turn, can be a blessing and a “hand extended”. Galatians 6:2 instructs us: “Carry each other’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” I like the way the Bible puts it in Ecclesiastes (4:9, 10 New Living Translation): “Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one: they get a better return for their labour. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.” The Paradise Village Church was founded a number of years ago on this premise: to be a blessing to the residents of our Village. That is what we desire to be today, and to this end, we open our hearts and doors extending to one and all a warm invitation to come and enjoy fellowship and worship with us. A precious promise from God’s Word: (I John 1:7 Living Bible): “But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus His son cleanses us from every sin.” The Church IS here for you! Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.
