PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
President’s Message I would like to start by saying it was the decision of your PVRA Executive to remove the water cooler from the Rec Centre. Reasons being; Management and owners of the Village have decided that your PVRA is no longer in charge of social events within “their Village”; funds for the water cooler and bottles of water came from this avenue of income; secondly, Management and the owners of the Village have restricted your PVRA Kitchen coordinator access to “their kitchen”, so it was becoming very awkward to store and obtain access to the water bottles. I Hope this clears up any questions you may have concerning this matter. A special “Thank You” goes out to Ilene Goschke and Carmel Maynard for organizing the Line Dancers Brunch that took place in August. In spite of the obstacles that they were faced with, it was an outstanding success. Again, the residents of Paradise Village Thank You both, as well as the many volunteers that helped. Now that Paradise Drive is finally opened, a reminder to all that the speed limit on all our streets is 20KM per hour, especially on Nature Drive as we approach the back gates. Try to be considerate towards your fellow residents. What more can be said about the annual Corn Roast that was hosted by your PVRA Kitchen/Social Chair, Linda Fulmore and her crew of volunteers. Again, many obstacles were overcome putting on this event. Manitoba Pork did an outstanding job and everyone had a wonderful time. My understanding is that 182 residents bought tickets and 160+ showed up to support this event. “Wow” what a turnout!! The PVRA is proud of its members and those Residents that are not PVRA members who showed up to support our Annual Corn Roast. A Special “Thank You” to John and Elizabeth Sluis for hosting the Happy Hour on the 25th of August. The turnout, as usual, was exceptional. Also, please keep in mind that any of the “Happy Hours” that occur within Paradise Village are not organized by your PVRA. These events are the doings of the individuals/home owners, that have invited their friends and neighbours to join them in enjoying a few hours of “Happy” at their residence. From what I understand, ALL RESIDENTS are welcome. Most importantly of all, check your Mail Boxes Bulletin Boards for our upcoming “General Meeting” in October. Date to be approved by Management. Thank you one and all, Ludwik Jarco “Proudly” President of the PVRA

Words from the Editor The month of August was so much fun. It was great to see the togetherness and cooperation that took place between the many residents of our community here in Paradise Village. There were 4 events that showed how much we enjoy each other’s company; it doesn’t take a Recreation Centre to make it happen either. Residents stepped up and provided their ideas, their hospitality, and their homes.
Let’s begin with the Brunch put on by the Line Dancers. Rain did not dampen the spirits of the residents who attended. The food was wonderful and the line dancing presentation had many thinking “what a great way to get some exercise and enjoy great music at the same time.” It didn’t matter if you were good at it or not. It was just fun and fun to watch. Great job you guys.
The first of two Happy Hours saw over 50 residents come out and brave the warm sun. Karaoke, refreshments, food, and conversation made the event go over so well that a decision to have another the following week occurred with even more turning out for that day. I believe this will be an ongoing occurrence. This is a wonderful and informal way to meet; I know that through these Happy
Hours, I have met some really great residents that I have only known about through address lists. Then there was the Corn Roast/Pork on a Bun (Provided by MB Pork) event. What an awesome time it was. There were over 160 residents in attendance! The sky remained cloudy with a chance of rain but no rain fell on us that afternoon; which had me feeling, this day was meant to be! People were all smiles and cheerful, happy to get together with each other. There was only laughter and camaraderie. Golf carts were used to transport people who needed a ride, the food was lovingly prepared, the decorations and table setup was well done and the dessert was definitely homemade and out of this world. Thank you to Linda Fulmore and your Social Committee Team who helped plan and prepare this event. Thank you to MB Pork for the great BBQ. I trust that the residents of Paradise Village will continue to support the PVRA and its social functions when they can. I look forward to more good times with you all at the next events and I will see you for sure for Chili Fest on September 20th. Debbie Kokil

Paradise Village Campers (Of yesteryear)
Paradise Village Campers got together on Tuesday, August 22nd to reminisce about the “good old days” of camping. Twenty-five former campers gathered around Nature Pond to remember our camping adventures from years past. Included was our trip to Thief River Falls, MN on 9/11 when we all went through the border crossing and the border was closed shortly thereafter. On the agenda were two former residents and campers who recently passed on, Bob Coulson and Ted Barnes. Plaques with their names were added to the Memorial Bench on Nature Pond which includes Gerry Deurbrouck. Many memories were shared during the late afternoon and early evening. It was a great get -together. Many thanks go to Lynda Gagnon and Vivian Deurbrouck for organizing this event. Larry Trush
Memorial & Reunion We both wish to thank all those who were able to come out to the Paradise Village Campers` Reunion and Dedication Service on August 22nd. We had a wonderful time visiting with our camper friends and appreciate those who made the trip from Winnipeg to support this event. Special thanks to Vivian, Lynda and Larry for hosting this memorial in memory of Ted Barnes and Bob Coulson. Gerry`s bench with the now 3 memorial plaques will always be a reminder of our great times camping with all of you. We think of so many great happy hours, pot luck suppers, picnic lunches at St. Malo, those musical campfires and best of all the lasting friendships. These are the “good times” memories we have to share because of you all. Thank you for keeping these memories alive ... and thoughts of Gerry, Bob & Ted close in our hearts. Sincerely, Jean Barnes & Diana Coulson

Poems by M.C. Fair I thought I would give poetry a try since summer is over and school is about to begin. I wonder if Ms. Fair would have liked it. Summer is over, fall is here. Harvest is happening and school start is near. Parents and kids, teachers and friends, Let’s get together and celebrate because fun never ends. I am back to work preparing the books for the student body I look forward to a great year filled with new and exciting camaraderie.
I’M GLAD I’m glad that when I was a child The days were bright and sunny, Soft breezes whispered through the trees, Where bees were gathering honey Amid the basswood’s tallest boughs, Where winged blossoms straying Went floating through the sun-lit air And grasses tall were swaying. I’m glad that summer days were long And summer skies were blue, That grass and buds and leaves and flowers Each spring-time came anew, To greet us after winter days Had melted into spring, And little rills went hurrying by Where merry birds would sing. I’m glad that I had eyes to see The beauty of each day, When nature at her very best Spread out in grand array The daisies and the buttercups Bright clover tips so gay, And these, I worshiped every year Through bright, glad summer days. I’m glad that I had ears to hear The sounds throughout the glen, The blue-bird and the whippoorwill The robin and the wren, The cricket singing in the grass, The bass note of the frog, Way---down in misty hollows Where the moss grew on the bog. I’m glad I had a mother And a father who were true To us their thoughtless children And who loved each other too. There was no thought of envy, No friction in our home So memory indeed is sweet Of that, our Home Sweet Home.

Misconceptions About Flu Vaccines Now is the time of year to start planning to get vaccinated against the flu! It is recommended that we have annual flu shots for a very good reason, and sometimes people have wrong information about the flu shots or are afraid to get them because of misinformation. This article will give you some of the misconceptions about flu shots and then fill you in on the truth! Can a flu shot give you the flu? No, a flu shot cannot cause flu illness. Flu vaccines given with a needle are currently made in two ways: the vaccine is made either with a) flu vaccine viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ and are therefore not infectious, or b) with no flu vaccine viruses at all (which is the case for recombinant influenza vaccine). The most common side effects from the influenza shot are soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given. Low-grade fever, headache and muscle aches also may occur. In randomized, blinded studies, where some people get inactivated flu shots and others get salt-water shots, the only differences in symptoms was increased soreness in the arm and redness at the injection site among people who got the flu shot. There was no difference in terms of body aches, fever, cough, runny nose or sore throat. Is it better to get the flu than the flu vaccine? No. Flu can be a serious disease, particu-
larly among young children, older adults, and people with certain chronic health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes. Any flu infection can carry a risk of serious complications, hospitalization or death, even among otherwise healthy children and adults. Therefore, getting vaccinated is a safer choice than risking illness to obtain immune protection. Do I really need a flu vaccine every year? Yes. CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for just about everyone 6 months and older, even when the viruses the vaccine protects against have not changed from the previous season. The reason for this is that a person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccination is needed to get the “optimal” or best protection against the flu. Why do some people not feel well after getting the seasonal flu vaccine? Some people report having mild reactions to flu vaccination. The most common reaction to the flu shot in adults has been soreness, redness or swelling at the spot where the shot was given. This usually lasts less than two days. This initial soreness is most likely the result of the body’s early immune response reacting to a foreign substance entering the body. Other reactions following the flu shot are usually mild and can include a low grade fever and aches. If these reactions occur, they
usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days. The most common reactions people have to flu vaccine are much less severe than the symptoms caused by actual flu illness. What about serious reactions to flu vaccine? Serious allergic reactions to flu vaccines are very rare. If they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccination. While these reactions can be life-threatening, effective treatments are available. What about people who get a seasonal flu vaccine and still get sick with flu symptoms? There are several reasons why someone might get a flu symptoms, even after they have been vaccinated against flu. One reason is that some people can become ill from other respiratory viruses besides flu such as rhinoviruses, which are associated with the common cold, cause symptoms similar to flu, and also spread and cause illness during the flu season. The flu vaccine only protects against influenza, not other illnesses. Another explanation is that it is possible to be exposed to influenza viruses, which cause the flu, shortly before getting vaccinated or during the two-week period after vaccination that it takes the body to develop immune protection. This exposure may result in a person becoming ill with flu before protection from the vaccine takes effect. A third reason why some people may
experience flu like symptoms despite getting vaccinated is that they may have been exposed to a flu virus that is very different from the viruses the vaccine is designed to protect against. The ability of a flu vaccine to protect a person depends largely on the similarity or “match” between the viruses selected to make the vaccine and those spreading and causing illness. There are many different flu viruses that spread and cause illness among people. The final explanation for experiencing flu symptoms after vaccination is that the flu vaccine is not 100% protection and some people who get vaccinated may still get sick. The flu vaccines should be ready to administer early fall, so be sure to find out where to get yours done! Your local public health centre will have flu clinics, your doctors office will offer flu shots, or you can have them -done in the comfort of your own home (or office) by calling the private NP on Wheels service! The NP on Wheels service can add the flu shot (and the pneumonia shot) to any other home visit service for no extra fee! Call 1-877-510-1729 or email dispatch@nponwheels.com GET THE SHOT, NOT THE FLU!!

Paradise Village Singles Summer BBQ
On a perfect summer evening our annual BBQ was greatly enjoyed by 26 folks. Hats off to Les Hooper for the evening. He provided a Karaoke machine and it attracted some songster wannabes to try out their talents. A trio of Myrna, Darlene N and Toni entertained the group with some swinging songs. Also Margaret R wowed us with a solo. Guest chef Marv Zubrin along with Ron Gunn handled the BBQ producing great burgers and giant wieners. Pat Zubrin organized the kitchen crew, setting out all the rest of the delicious food. Cake and yummy strawberry dessert followed to honour our birthday boy and gal, Barry and Darlene. Did someone count the candles?? Les’s sunroom provided an excellent venue and allowed Vic Loewen to “scoot” up to the back for a visit. Great to see you Vic! Our next Singles Pot Luck will be held at the home of BARRY KNOX, 5 Nature Drive on September 4th commencing at 5 pm. Please call Barry @ 204 422 6815 if you plan to attend Submitted by Joy Morrison

20 Things You Didn’t Know About the Movie “Giant” 1) Elizabeth Taylor and husband Michael Wilding invited Rock Hudson and his future wife to their house for get-to-know-you drinks one night at the very start of the production. Hudson described it as a “liquid evening” - they all got exceedingly drunk, finishing the evening at 3:00am. Taylor’s call-time was 5:30am and Hudson’s wasn’t long after. Fortunately the scene being shot that morning was a wedding scene with no dialog, so instead of talking, all they had to do was look lovingly at each other. The two actors were concentrating so hard on not being sick that they were quite surprised when some of the people on-set started to cry, so convinced were they of their supposed looks of adoration at each other. 2) Carroll Baker, who plays Elizabeth Taylor’s daughter, was actually older than Taylor. In the 1940s and 1950s the usual policy for films where characters would start young and get older was to cast older actors and de-age them to show them as their younger selves. “Giant” took the then largely radical step of doing the opposite - casting younger actors and using make-up to make them appear older. 3) When Rock Hudson was cast, director George Stevens asked him whom he preferred as his leading lady, Grace Kelly or Elizabeth Taylor. Hudson picked Taylor, who was cast and ended up becoming lifelong friends with Hudson. 4) During this production shoot James Dean appeared in an informal black & white TV commercial in which he responded to questions posed by actor Gig Young. Ironically, Dean was promoting safe driving and informed viewers, “People say racing is dangerous, but I’d rather take my chances on the track any day than on the highway.” Before he left the studio he added one piece of advice: “Drive safely, because the life you save may be mine.” Dean was wearing the very hat and clothing he wore for this movie throughout the commercial. He died a few
weeks later in a car crash. 5) Rock Hudson and James Dean did not get along. Although later rumors would suggest that Dean had rejected a pass from the actor, most sources reported that each had little respect for the other’s approach to acting, and Hudson resented what he considered Dean’s unprofessional behavior. 6) The lead character, Jett Rink, was based upon the life of Texas oilman Glenn H. McCarthy (190788), an Irish immigrant who would later be associated with a symbol of opulence in Houston, Texas: the Shamrock Hotel, which opened on St. Patrick’s Day, 1949. Author Edna Ferber met McCarthy when she was a guest at his Shamrock Hotel (known as the Shamrock Hilton after 1955), which served as the basis for the fictional Emperador Hotel in both the book and the film. 7) Location filming took place for two months outside the tiny Texas town of Marfa. Director George Stevens did not have a closed set but actively encouraged the townspeople to come by, either to watch the shooting, visit with the cast and crew or take part as extras, dialect coaches, bit players and stagehands. 8) James Dean refused to undergo a lengthy make-up process for his later scenes, claiming “a man of 45 shows his age in thoughts and actions, not in wrinkles.” He only allowed them to gray his temples and put a few lines on his forehead. 9) Gary Cooper happened to be at Warner Bros. the day Mercedes McCambridge was doing hair and makeup tests. When he got a look at the brand new Stetson she was supposed to wear in the film, he said, “You mean to sit there and tell me that a Texan woman who spends most of her waking hours in the middle of hundreds of head of cattle would be caught dead in that stupid store hat?” He called a wardrobe man he had worked with, and gave McCambridge an old hat he had worn in other films. It even had his name in the band. When Mc-
Cambridge noticed the water stains, she asked if it had been rained on. “Nope,” he replied. “Peed on a lot! That’s what makes it such a fine Texas hat. No self-respecting rancher wears a hat that his horse hasn’t peed on!” She wrote in her memoirs that James Dean tried to steal it. 10) James Dean was so completely immersed in his character that he hardly ever changed out of his costume. 11) Elizabeth Taylor forged a close bond with James Dean. Some nights they would sit up late as he vented his frustrations with his life as an actor, the restrictions of Hollywood life and past traumas. Unlike Rock Hudson, however, he rarely acknowledged their closeness on set, often ignoring her completely after a night of baring his soul to her. 12) It was the highest grossing film in Warner Bros. history until the release of The Exorcist (1973). 13) James Dean refused to show up for one Saturday call because he had planned to move that day. A week later he arrived late on a day when Mercedes McCambridge had shown up on time, even though the night before she was sent to the hospital for stitches after a bad fall. George Stevens dressed him down in front of the entire cast and crew, then walked off the set and left an assistant to direct the actor’s scenes. 14) Originally budgeted just shy of $2 million, the film ended up costing over $5 million. Despite the worries of studio head Jack L. Warner, it went on to become Warner Bros.’ biggest hit up to that time. 15) Shooting in Texas during the summer was far from comfortable, with temperatures rising as high as 120 degrees in the shade. Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor bolstered each other’s spirits as much as possible, often staying up late drinking together. 16) During location shooting, Warner Bros. gave the principal cast members battered old Chevies to drive around. James Dean was so
frustrated with the film he drove his out of town and shot out the windows with a BB gun. That was the last straw for Warner’s. After previous complaints about the actor’s speeding, the studio took his car away from him. When he got Mercedes McCambridge to drive through the country slowly as he sat on the hood of her car shooting rabbits, Warner’s took her car away, too. 17) Rock Hudson, in a later interview, claimed that when he viewed the film for the first time with an audience, he was booed throughout, but when the audience cheered him in the diner scene he realized the reaction was to his character and not to his abilities as an actor. 18) Orsen Wells was inspired by the film to make The Other Side of the Wind (2018), one of his many unfinished opuses. It tells of an old director trying to complete an epic movie and being taunted by his young male lead who keeps calling him “Fatso”. The director encourages his star to buy a sports car. In what exists of the film, the director is played by lean, lanky John Huston. “Fatso”, however, was James Dean’s nickname for George Stevens during the making of “Giant”. 19) Although they had enjoyed a congenial relationship making A Place in the Sun (1951), Elizabeth Taylor and George Stevens quarrelled a good deal during filming. Most of their fights stemmed from his practice of demanding multiple takes without explaining why or offering additional direction to the actors. 20) Rock Hudson claimed that he was chosen for the coveted role of Bick Benedict largely because he was the right age, 30. George Stevens felt he could be convincing as both a younger version of Bick in his early 20s and as a grandfather in his 60s. More established actors like Gary Cooper, Clark Gable and William Holden were suggested by the studio for the role, but Stevens rejected them as being too old to convincingly play Bick during his younger years.

More Uses for Mother Nature’s Bounty Submitted by Frank Leys Do you want to take your use of garden vegetables and fruit to a whole new level? Then you must tries some of these! 1. Cucumber eyes. Cut two fat slices from a cold cucumber fresh from the refrigerator and lie back for a relaxing 10 to 15 minutes while they drain the puffiness from your eyes. They are rich in vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and cafeic acid, both of which reduce swelling, soothe irritation and prevent water retention. 2. Strawberry toes. Take eight strawberries, two tablespoons of olive oil and one teaspoon of salt. Mash them together for a wonderful foot scrub. Rub a strawberry over your teeth to get a whiter smile. Strawberries contain alpha hydroxyl acids (like salicylic acid). 3. Potato hair. Potato juice is said to aid in retarding hair loss. Mix it with egg white and honey and leave on your hair for two hours,
shampoo and rinse. Potato juice will also help to darken greying hair. Potato juice can also relieve eczema itch and sunburn. 4. Rosemary cheeks. Rosemary, with a little witch hazel added, is good for increasing blood circulation in the face to give you a rosy glow. Counter intuitively, olive oil is an excellent treatment for oily skin; it actually dissolves the oil, leaving skin soft and non-greasy. Use it to remove makeup. 5. Avocado hands. Mix mashed avocado with egg white, rolled oats and lemon juice. Apply to hands and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse. Avocadoes help heal sun-damaged skin and age spots. 6. Vinegar head. A rinse of vinegar and water has all sorts of natural benefits for your skin and scalp. Because vinegar has the same pH as hair oil, it helps maintain the right acidity level on your scalp. It also rids scalp of bacteria and fungus as well as removing shampoo
and conditioning residue. It reduces frizz and split ends and changes hair porosity. It also provides hair with a diet of vitamins B, C and potassium. Use two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to one cup of water. Let sit for a minute or two; then rinse with fresh water. 7. Broccoli body. This cruciferous veggie is high in antioxidants, including vitamins C and E. The vitamin C in broccoli aids in collagen production and keeps your skin healthy and supple, while vitamin E protects your skin cell membranes and guards against UV radiation damage. Eat it! 8. Calendula deodorant. Demurely hidden in the pretty calendula blossoms is a treasure trove of body soothing ingredients. It can be used in everything from deodorant to eyewash - even to treat pink eye. Calendula is also good for sunburns. It makes a soothing tea: take one tablespoon of dried petals or two of fresh in a cup of water. Bring to a boil and
steep for 10 minutes. Drink it or use it as a soothing wash. 9. Vinegar fungal killer. Vinegar is the miracle product in the kitchen. In addition to all its other wonderful benefits, it is the best cure for toenail fungus. Mix one part apple cider vinegar to one part Epsom salts and six parts hot water. Soak feet twice a day. Back this up with a drink of two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, a teaspoon of honey and eight ounces of warm water. 10. Tomato paste for cellulite. Got an excess crop of tomatoes? Render them down to tomato paste and rub the result on those unsightly cellulite-ridden arms and thighs. Eat three or four tablespoons a day as well. The paste is full of lycopene which strengthens the skin and prevents the breakdown of collagen. Does it work? I dunno, but I hear it also helps reduce sun-damage! “LIVING IN VICTORY” Although this is a very turbulent world we live in, as Christians, we can live victorious over the constant trials, tribulations and calamities and the evil that, at times seems to surround us. Jesus calls on us to be “Lights” and “Salt” in the darkness of this challenging hour – an impossible task without His inner strength and abiding presence in our lives. An old gospel song relates: “In times like these, we need a Saviour, in times like these we need an Anchor.” And then the song admonishes: “Be very sure, be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid Rock.” And further it tells us: “This Rock is Jesus, yes. He’s the One…this Rock is Jesus, the only One.” The “only and ultimate security” today is not found in man’s feeble attempts but is found in the circle of God’s loving arms. The Psalmist David knew it: conceding: “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” For David recognized the Source of our deliverance: “For the angel of the Lord encamps round about them that fear Him, and delivers them.” (Psalm 37: 17,7) The “key to victory” is “faith” in God Who does “hear and answer Prayer” . And the wonderful truth is “Whosoever to the Lord may come!” (I John 5: 4,5) Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.
