PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
President’s Message “I’m Back”. Thank you ever so much Barry for filling in for me in August’s Newsletter. You did a great job. Another very successful “Happy Hour” was had, hosted by the Leys, in their yard. Seventy plus residents were in attendance and the food and good times were plentiful. The weather was co-operative and a great time was enjoyed by all in attendance. The Annual “Corn Roast” was a spectacular event this year. Over two hundred residents enjoyed the wonderful food which consisted of chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and of course, the super sweet corn. A well earned “Thank you”, goes out to Linda Fulmore and all her amazing volunteers who make events like this one, such a success. A special thank you goes to Marvin Zubrin for his talents in sign making and thanks to Carol Somerville and all the decorating volunteers who make our Recreation Centre beautiful. I would be remiss if I did not give recognition to Brian and Ila Cooper, along with other volunteers that spent days sanding, prepping, and finally painting the many picnic tables at the Recreation Centre; as well as, the tables located at both ponds
within Paradise Village. “Thank you “for your efforts. Jeff Marshall took it upon himself to pressure wash the PVRA’s BBQ’s as well as the woodworking shop so that they would be in top notch condition in time for the Corn Roast. Thank you, Jeff. I would like to take this time to recognize the many volunteers that contribute their time and efforts in assisting residents of our Village. The volunteer drivers that drive those not capable of driving into Ste. Anne, Steinbach and Winnipeg; the many volunteers that help your PVRA Social Committee with setting up, serving, decorating and cleaning up after all our functions. Also the volunteers that constantly look after the walking trails at the south end of the Village, spearheaded by Frank Leys; Marvin Zubrin who is called upon many, many times to supply your PVRA with Signage for various events, sometimes with very short notice. These, as well as many others, are those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make our lives here in Paradise Village, a great place to live. And, on a personal note, a very, very special
“Thank You” to all the volunteers that put up with me on your PVRA Executive. The amount of time required by our Executive is astronomical and I for one am truly appreciative. Not only is it your PVRA Executive that contribute many hours, but it also includes the spouses that provide us with backup when required. The “Make it Happen” group of volunteers is often called upon once again on short notice, to react to sensitive situations that come up now and then; “Thank You” Les Hooper and your group of volunteers. Thanks go out to the volunteers that deliver your monthly Newsletters. Their work and time is appreciated by all the Village Residents. Hopefully, I have not omitted anyone, however, if I have, please accept my apologies as I am getting old and my memory is not as sharp as it once was. Management and Owners of the Village are in the Process of tackling Village Drive to ensure we have a smoother ride. With this, I would like to comment on a situation whereby someone was seen bicycling down the centre of Village while there were barricades up to prevent this from happening as there was fresh
sand just recently rolled. The bicycle left ruts in the sand. What is the matter with you? We need to show some respect and consideration for the efforts Management and Owners are putting into our Village. Also, people are walking down Village, on the rolled sand, leaving footprints. Again, no respect. You know who you are and so do some of your neighbours. A final note: Management posted on the Paradise Village Website that watering is only to be done by hand, no lawn sprinklers. On August 17, 2018 I drove through the Village at 2:30 pm and counted twenty-one residents using sprinklers to water their lawns. We are putting excess strain on the pump houses during this particularly dry period, and then we wonder “why we have no water pressure?” for a shower. We are doing it to ourselves. And once again, a reminder that the speed limit within the Village, especially on Paradise and Sunset, is 20 kilometers per hour! This is also the speed limit for the Golf Cart People too. Enjoy what is left of a very dry summer. Proudly, your President Ludwik Jarco

Corn Roast a Tasty Treat for All Attendees The PVRA Annual Corn Roast on August 23rd was once again a wonderful event. Many residents attended and enjoyed a terrific meal. I believe that if people only knew how much fun it is to come out and volunteer your time to make food, create decorations, and prepare the Recreation Centre more might volunteer. I am usually at work (as I am not 65 lol or 55 and financially able to retire‌lol) when things are being prepared for most events but luckily I had the opportunity to assist somewhat with this Corn Roast. The camaraderie of my fellow residents was lots of fun no matter what the task. Everyone gets along and new
friendships are made during these times. Our faces show that we enjoyed ourselves the day of the corn roast after we shucked the corn by the great picture that Brian Cooper took of us. I was in charge of quality control removing the tips that were dry and or bug eaten. No one came to close to me with the size of knife that I used and I guess that was also not the time to entice anyone to take over the newsletter ha ha. The Car show was an absolute hit. Thanks to Joy Morrison for organizing it. They were amazing to look at and greatly admired. I liked how the age range was so varied. I can only imag-
ine how proud all of these men were to show off their pride and oy (some even bringing two cars) Thanks to Marv for his talent in creating the signs and banner, thanks to Ron Gunn for the photos, and congratulations to Pat Werner, the winning vote, for his classic 1936 DeSoto. There was a 50/50 winner and a door prize winner but the big winner was
Crystal from the Paradise Village Office. With many gracious donations from our residents, Gas Gift Cards and a huge signed card were presented to Crystal. She will be attending school in September full-time and will only be working here casually in the Village going forward. She will be missed but we are proud of her. (see pic pg 7) By Debbie Kokil

Words from the Editor Happy September everyone! August was a great time for me. For the 3rd time in a row and the 2nd time to the same area, my girls friends and I, took a vacation to Bradenton, Florida. Crazy to go to Florida in the summer, you bet; but, we all work in education and are unable to take a vacation during the school year and no one wants to go during Christmas and Spring Break. Yes it is hot but not as hot as the month July apparently and do you want to know something…we have come to love the daily 105 degree temperature!
We stay in a 55+ mobile home community and rent a 2 bedroom apartment that is located above the Recreation Centre. Life is pretty quiet there as the snowbirds have all gone home and that is just how we like it. The pool is beautiful, the wine is cheap, and the scenery is amazing. But….. This trip did not allow us to swim on the famed Siesta Key or visit any of the beaches south of us due to RED TIDE. RED TIDE is a natural phenomenon that develops miles offshore before making its way to the coast, where it feeds on a
variety of pollutants, including phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilizer, along with other runoff and wastewater. This year is Florida’s worst red tide in more than a decade and turned the aqua-blue surf to a rusty dull brown. The red tide’s poisonous algae is a variety called Karenia brevis that is native to the Gulf of Mexico. It breaks out every year, and its neurotoxin disorients and paralyzes marine life. More than 2,000 tons of dead marine animals have been removed from the coasts of the five hardesthit counties, according to cleanup reports. The life-
guards wear gas masks because the toxic fumes are so intense. So we did not go south at all but enjoyed Homosassa Springs State Park where we saw manatees, hippopotamus, and flamingos. We took an evening cruise that included a 4 course meal, on the ‘StarLite Majesty’ from Tampa Bay to Clearwater; travelled on the Jolly Trolley, and visited Tarpon Springs. It went by fast but was worth it all the same. Have a great month folks. Debbie Kokil, Newsletter Editor

“SCHOOL DAYS! SCHOOL DAYS! GOOD OLE GOLDEN-RULE DAYS…!” I know that the song is quite out of date, but it is still that time of year: students and teachers going back into the classroom to learn some “readin’ and writen’ and ‘rithmatic’ – hopefully. However, the reality is, we are ALL - young and old – still in school: it’s called the “School of Life” and we are never too young or too old to learn something new. They say: “experience is a great teacher” and hopefully, though we are older, we are a bit wiser today than yesterday. A scholar of the last century declared: “No education is complete without the study of the Bible.” A past President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, maintained that, “a thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.” The Bible confirms the value of God’s Word in one’s life: “For the Lord gives wisdom and from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6) As well, in (Proverbs 1:7), the Bible declares: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge…” Sometimes, the “school of hard knocks” is tough and painful, but, if we will trust God and stay positive, we will come through those “tests and trials” with “high marks.” SPECIAL NOTE: The Paradise Village Church has resumed services since Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 10 am in the Recreation Centre. Of course, everyone is welcome to share in this time of worship, prayer, singing, and sharing. We will also enjoy a time of fellowship (and goodies!) following the service – come and be blessed! If you or someone you know stands in need of prayer or help please do not hesitate to call Dennis Hall 204-422-9870.
