AND THEN IT WAS WINTER by Barb Prior You know….....time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married, and embarking on my new life. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I have lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then, of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast? I remember seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me. I was only on the "first hole" and the "back nine" was so far off that I could not imagine what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey. They move slower. I remember when we were young and vibrant... but, like me, our age is beginning to show. We are now those older folks. And so... now I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains, the loss of strength and ability to do the things that I wish I had done but never did! I'm now on the back nine of my life and I don't know how long it will last. Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all part of my lifetime. So, if you are not yet on your "back nine", let me remind you it will be here faster than you think. Whatever you would like to accomplish in your life...do it! Life goes by quickly. There are no promises that you will see all the seasons of your life. LIVE FOR TODAY. Tell your loved ones all the things you want them to remember and hope they appreciate and love you for all the things you have done for them through the years. Life is a gift. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one! It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived. Live well. Enjoy today. Be happy. Health is the real wealth. Consider the following: Your kids are becoming you... but your grandchildren are perfect Going out is good... coming home is better You forget names...It's OK because other people forget the even knew you You realize you’re never going to be really good at anything...especially golf You sleep better in a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch You tend to use more four letter words..."What?" “When?" What used to be freckles are now liver spots. Everybody whispers. Old is good in some things: Old songs; Old movies; Old friends! Stay well old friend. Today is the oldest you've ever been, yet the youngest you'll ever be. So enjoy this day while it lasts.

There were fewer folks at this month’s dinner likely due to a few having slipped away south. Carol Stoess hosted this event in grand style, as usual and of course a super time was had by all. The birthday girls were Carol and Bernice who together found enough hot air to extinguish the candles. Hope your wishes come true! We planned our Christmas get-together at Myrna Mackenzie’s home. Myrna and Margaret Rougeau will provide the turkey and all the trimmings. The rest of us providing everything else. Gifts will be exchanged (value approximately $15) for those who wish to participate. This is always accompanied by plenty of laughter as some gifts can be quite hilarious. Try to be original, as it will add to the fun. Since Carol and Joy have been doing the organizing and newspaper write ups, respectively, for quite some time. They wished to step down. Vida Bowyer offered to coordinate events and Myrna Mackenzie volunteered to do a monthly report for the newsletter. Thanks all around, ladies.
The Christmas Potluck Party will be held Dec 6th at Myrna Mackenzie’s home on 28 Nature Drive Phone or text 204-371-0338 Please call if you are going to attend, and, on this occasion let Myrna know what you will bring.

Very shortly it will become compulsory for senior citizens to carry not only their ID, but also their insurance documents, their prescription list, a compact version of their medical file, the statement declaring if they want to be resuscitated after a heart attack, or stroke, etc. etc. Consequently, a lot of paperwork will have to be carried when a senior citizen goes out the front door OR when they travel! Specifically for this purpose a special "Senior USB Stick" has been developed. The Liberals have already started fixing Potholes across Canada!

Angel Fingerprints by Barbara Ann Derksen (Paradise Resident) Angels are a topic of conversation in many homes during the Christmas season. "We place them on Christmas tree tops and listen as children, depicting angels in a Christmas pageant, tell shepherds to go to Bethlehem to see the Savior." But do angels really exist? Bob Kristensen was about to find out. The day was cool, dry, and sunny with a crisp feel to the air on this pre-Christmas day in 2001. Bob decided early that morning that he would cut some wood from a neighbor’s yard. She had a dead tree she wanted removed. Bob had a hungry, wood-eating furnace at home. Completing his regular work schedule early, he headed towards the field, tools in hand. Bob, a strong Christian, had never encountered an angel, knew little about their existence except what the Bible told him, so spent very little time thinking about them at all. Smiling, with his mind on the task at hand and not on angels, he slammed the door to his truck and headed toward the large tree. It leaned a little to the north. As Bob stared up at it, the forty or fifty foot height seemed to reach heaven. He knew a good Maple when he saw one and with a girth of three feet, Bob knew the tree had been there a long time. It had been damaged during a storm so now this tree would feed his furnace for a month or more. Bob swung his axe for the first cut. He expected, since the tree was leaning north, that it would fall in that direction so he notched the north side of the tree. He moved around to the south side. His chain saw cut into the old bark spewing sawdust in all directions. Bob glanced at the top occasionally. The tree swayed as he reached the center with his saw, sharpened for just such a time as this. Before he had time to react, the tree fell, not to the north as was expected, but directly over the spot where he was standing. Life did not have time to flash before his eyes as the huge trunk aimed for his head. As if in a flash, he was laying on the ground about twelve feet from the base of that huge tree. His left leg was underneath the tree where the trunk was bowed. He wiggled his foot. No pain. He stood, dusted himself off, and checked for broken bones. None. As he looked again at the tree, some men who’d been working nearby ran to his side. With disbelief and amazement written all over their faces, each one asked if he was okay several times. “What happened? Did any of you see what happened?” Bob looked from one face to the other. The rougher, much younger man scratched his head, blinked a few times and then replied. “It looked as if you were moving backward very fast but neither of your feet were touching the ground.” The man surmised there was a space of about two feet between Bob’s feet and the ground under them. That was when Bob began to think about angels, really think about them for the first time. He left the tree lying where it was and drove as fast as the law would allow toward home. He felt giddy almost, strange, thinking could it be true? Bob’s wife was not home when he got there and by this time, even though he hadn’t felt anything hit him, soreness began to make itself known in his left front shoulder. He decided to investigate. Pulling off his shirt, he discovered a large bruise. The main part of the bruise was close to baseball size but the entire left side of his chest was swollen. He shook his head. The only souvenir of his encounter with a tree that probably weighed 3000 pounds was a big ugly bruise. Bob spoke about the incident with a friend later that evening. As most of us want to do, he began to logically explain his bruise as the remains of the tree’s encounter with his body. His friend, however, posed a good question, “If a three thousand pound tree fell on you and hit you on the chest, how could you possibly have gotten out from under it?” Bob began to feel that giddy sense of the unknown again. Maybe that bruise was from a heavenly hand after all. 20
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Bob decided to seek his pastor’s advice the next day, after he saw the five smaller bruises, four on the back of his shoulder and one beside the larger bruise. "The Bible says that angels are created beings with high intelligence,” the pastor began. “They have the ability to make moral judgment but they are spiritual beings without physical bodies. The Bible clearly says that there are angels who guard people although I am not convinced that there is necessarily a guardian angel assigned to each person. The idea that people who die become angels is not biblical but more an inspirational idea and popularized in the movie industry.” He went on to explain that in scripture, angels are of a separate created order from mankind. “When human beings die, those who go to heaven remain human beings. Angels are created to serve the Lord and the Bible talks about them protecting man. Psalm 91:11 says For He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands so you will not strike your foot against a stone.” The Reverend went on to explain that there are angels, like man, who are fallen and that God, through His Son, has provided a redemption plan for man but not for angels. “Do angels help some people but not others?” Bob had a hard time accepting God’s intervention in this situation. “It would appear so, according to God's higher purpose,” the pastor answered. Bob went home. His senses tingling, he took another look at the bruises on his left shoulder. Each of the smaller imprints looked like a bruise but was exactly the size of a fingerprint, four on his back and one on the front of his shoulder, just a little to the right of the large bruise noticed the day before. He called his wife. “Jean, place your hand over those bruises.” He watched in the mirror as she stood in front of him. When she placed her smaller palm over the large bruise, her thumb and fingers almost fit the exact place where the other bruises lay. Bob knew that his angel had moved him out of harm’s way. He had the hand print to prove it. Bob walks daily with the knowledge that God cares specifically for those who love him. He has not encountered another angel, but he has experienced God’s caring in other ways. He also knows many who act as God’s angels in human form and he hopes he has become one of them. They have other plans but everything will get done before they officially move in before they retire. What a talented couple!! We had a great visit over a cup of coffee, discussing all the events and activities that are offered in our Village and at the Recreation Center. They both work for WRE Development and have been there for 34 years. Pat is the property manager and Ray is the maintenance person. Pat's hobbies include decorating, cooking, reading and music. Ray likes to play pool, play music, swim, paint, and is a jack-of-all trades. Between them there are 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Their family is very important to them and they spend as much time as they can with them. Again Ray and Pat I would like to welcome you to our beautiful Paradise Village and hope to see you soon at some of the events that are held here. This is a good time to meet some of the other residents. Stuart & Donece Hughes - 04 Lakeview Drive - moved into their beautiful home from West St. Paul on October 13, 2015. They are absolutely happy with their move. They love the 55 plus lifestyle, the friendliness, the peaceful setting and they also have friends living in Paradise Village . It is for all these reasons that they moved here. They have two beautiful Boxers, Lacey and Missy. Had a great conversation with Stuart and Donece, going over all the activities and events offered at the Recreation Center such as exercise classes, darts, square dancing, jam sessions, bingo cards, potlucks and our annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners. Stuart retired as an In-charge Flight Attendant for Air Canada. Donece recently retired as a General Insurance Broker. Their hobbies and interests are very similar. They both like cooking, golfing, dancing, travelling, swimming, and entertaining. Donece also likes reading and karate. They have a daughter and grandson living in Winnipeg. Hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, and other activities offered here in the Park. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents. Welcome to Paradise Village Stuart & Donece. Paul & Linda Ratte - 11 Nature Drive - moved to Paradise Village from Transcona on October 23, 2015. When I went to visit them, they were still trying to get settled in and found they hadn't downsized nearly enough,. That seems to be problematic with a lot of us. They have been looking for years for a place to retire to and found Paradise Village to be exactly what they were looking for. They like the countryside, the peace and friendliness and enjoy their own private home, garden and yard. We talked about all the activities and events held at the Rec Centre and Paul said that's another thing that attracted them to Paradise Village - the Pool and the Rec Centre. Paul is still actively employed as an electrician for Freshwater Fish but can hardly wait until he retires next year. Linda did odd jobs throughout her life but was basically a stay-at-home mom. They have 3 children and 9 grandchildren so did a fair amount of babysitting which she treasured. Linda's interests are bird watching, cooking, gardening and playing bingo. Paul plays hockey, is a backyard mechanic and a jack-of-all trades kind of a guy.Had a most enjoyable visit with Paul and Linda and encouraged them to come out to some of the activities where they will be able to meet other residents in our beautiful Paradise Village. PARADISE SQUARES by Larry Trush Our Hobo Night on the 17th of November was a great dance with 6 squares on the floor at times. Visiting clubs were Beausejour Swinging Squares, Grand Squares, Paws & Taws, Whirlaway Westerners, and St. Vital Swingers. After dancing, our famous Hobo Stew was served. As one of our members remarked, “our recipe is one of a kind which will never be duplicated because we don’t remember what we put into the stew!” Our next special evening will be our Christmas Dance on December 15th which will be a box lunch. Our Start-Up dance of 2016 will be on January 5th
Merry Christmas to all and Good Health in 2016!

Sarah was in the fertilized egg business. She had several hundred young pullets and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. She kept records and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so she bought some tiny bells and attached them to her roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so she could tell from a distance which rooster was performing. Now, she could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Sarah's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen but, this morning she noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When she went to investigate, she saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. To Sarah's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job, and walk on to the next one. Sarah was so proud of old Butch, she entered him in a Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Peace Prize" they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention? "We hope you voted carefully in the last election. You can't always hear the bells." 30

The Edmonton Eskimos are named for the Eskimo, or Inuit, of northern Canada. While not located in the far north land of the Inuit, the nickname Eskimos was likely adopted for the alliterative effect and as a reference to Edmonton's northern location. The original name was Esquimaux from 1897 to 1910, from the archaic French spelling. Edmonton has faced some pressure in the past couple decades to change their team name, most recently in 2011 and 2014. Edmonton has a long history of teams with the Eskimo name, in hockey, baseball, and other sports. 31

Gout Gout, a rheumatic disease which results from the deposition of uric acid crystals in tissues and fluids, manifests as sudden severe attacks of pain. The typical presentation of gout is tenderness and pain in the big toe but the patient may experience an atypical presentation where any joint can be affected. Gout occurs as a result of urate production (either normal or excessive) and the kidneys lack of ability to process the urate and eliminate it from the body fast enough. What the body cannot excrete it will store. In the case of excess urate the body will attempt to store it in the joint spaces. This will result in recurrent attacks of inflammation, chronic arthropathy, topaceous deposits and potentially uric acid nephrolithiasis. The cause of gout can be due to high uric acid levels (primary) or due to the result of another disease state, medication or various other reasons such as dietary indiscretion (secondary). The majority of patients who experience gout will match the typical profile: older obese male, frequent alcohol intake, hypertensive, hyperlipidemic. Patients who do not meet this profile may be misdiagnosed therefore be on the lookout for patients who may experience gouty arthritis related to medications or poor lifestyle choices. Predisposing factors may include high consumption of meat, seafood, fatty or processed foods or alcohol. Trauma, surgery, dehydration and some medications (diuretics, aspirin) may also precipitate a gout attack. There are three clinical syndromes associated with gouty arthritis: acute gouty arthritis, intercritical gout (or interval gout), and chronic recurrent and tophaceous gout. Acute gouty arthritis is characterized by severe pain, redness and swelling which reach the maximum in 24 hours and dissipate after that usually completely resolving in a few days or a week. As mentioned before, the big toe is the typical site of involvement but any joint can be involved. Lab tests performed during this period may be nonspecific for gout and uric acid levels maybe either high or low during an attack making the diagnosis difficult. Aspiration of the joint space may produce urate crystals. Once the acute period has subsided, the patient is said to have entered the intercritical period which is the symptom free period between flares. This is the time to draw uric acid levels and determine if the patient is an over producer or undereliminator of uric acid and to aspirate previously effected joints in the search for urate crystals. Once the diagnosis of gouty arthritis has been made, it is time to manage comorbid conditions, eliminate the cause of hyperuricemia and initiate urate lowering medications. Tophaceous deposits are the result of longer term untreated or undertreated gout, high levels of serum urate, diuretic use or treatment with cyclosporine. Larger deposits of uric acid may be apparent by visual or tactile inspection or may be determined by radiography or MRI. Treatment for acute gout should be initiated as soon as gout flare symptoms are perceived by the patient. Gout flares will resolve faster if treatment is initiated right away. Because of this, the patient and provider should discuss abortive therapies at the initial appointment and the patient should receive counseling on which therapies are appropriate to take immediately upon initiation of a flare. Anti-inflammatory medications are the mainstay for treatment of an acute flare but may not be appropriate for all patients due to their renal and cardiovascular side effects. Since time is of the essence when treating a gout flare over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications may be the medication of choice due to easy access. Prescriptions for other medications should be filled as soon as received and kept on hand so therapy can be initiate as quickly as possible. Colchicine, glucocorticoids, and interleukin inhibitors are other medications which may be appropriate to treat an acute gout flare.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Once the initial flare has subsided and the diagnosis of gout has been made, prevention strategies should be initiated. These strategies include lifestyle modification, management of comorbid disease states, initiation of urate lowering therapies, and prophylactic therapy. Since weight loss and a healthy diet has been shown to decrease the risk for gout patients should be encouraged to choose a diet moderate in meat consumption and low in processed or fatty foods and alcohol. If a medication is deemed to be the reason for gout, every effort to choose an alternative medication should be made. Urate lowering medications should be initiated to reduce recurrent attacks and bony formations as well as dissolve any tophi which may have formed. Counsel the patient so that he or she understands that treatment for recurrent gout is continuous and lifelong. Treatment options may include uricosuric agents which enhance uric acid excretion, xanthine oxidase inhibitors which decrease urate formation, and uricase enzymes which catalyze the conversion to allantoin a more soluble purine product. The goal of therapy is to obtain and maintain a serum urate level of <6 mg/dL by slowly reducing the circulating urate by 1-2 mg/dL per month. If the patient fails to meet these goals, check for adherence to the treatment and life style changes, reevaluate the diagnosis, or consider an alternative therapy. The keys to successful treatment of gout are proper hydration, therapeutic life style changes, adherence to treatment and the use of NSAIDS (colchicine or glucocorticoids) for quick resolution of an acute attack. Treatment is lifelong but maintaining urate levels <6 mg/dL will result in tophi resolution over time and a reduction in acute attacks of gout. As a result of following the treatment and lifestyle changes indicated above the patient may experience less frequent gout flares or may become free of flares all together leading to an improved quality of life.
