APRIL 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil Once again, thank you to our local resident, Les Hooper, for being an official enumerator for the upcoming Manitoba Provincial Elections on April 19, 2016. Be sure to exercise your right to vote. You do not have to go too far as our own Paradise Village Recreation Center will be a designated voting station. Notice to all SNOWBIRDS or any residents who have not been enumerated yet: The deadline for Les to enumerate Paradise Village residents is April 6th. Please be sure to contact Les and he will come by with the paperwork. Please pass on this information to all. As well Snowbirds, I have printed a newsletter for all paid members for the month of April. With the exception of those who asked me to save copies which I have, please contact your delivery person as they will have a copy for you. Welcome back! 2016 Census is also coming our way. I personally feel that the Census conducted by our government is a very necessary thing. We receive dollars according to our population here in Manitoba. If the government does not know how many people live here or what our needs are then how else are we to determine this information and receive the valuable dollars owed to us? Every person in Manitoba who completes the form provides Manitoba with transfer payments of $46,000 over five years. Do your part and fill out the form.

Any time of the year and particularly when it is the cough, cold & flu season, instead of pills why not try Ukrainian Penicillin. Here's the recipe: 1 Large head of garlic, peeled (that's 1 head not just 1 clove) 1 Large lemon with peel 1/3 cup honey 1/3 cup water Chop lemon into chunks and put into a blender. Add honey, water and garlic. Blend until fine. Put into a jar and keep in the fridge. It will keep in the fridge for 1 month. Take a tablespoon a day. No Joke You might think it would taste awful but it really doesn’t. Be sure to use unpasteurized honey for the extra benefit. Provided by Olga Baschak 5

APRIL 2016 The Trails
The next
I pause and sit within the wood, the breeze filtering through the trees It seems to speak in nature’s voice , reminding me to please Take time my friend breathe deeply in, the beauty that abounds The birds, the squirrels the feeding deer, the silence and the sounds. The snow is gently falling now, the feathers from on high To add to winters gentle cloak, gift wrapped from a shrouded sky Words are far too empty to capture the beauty of this day Transfixed beneath God’s canopy, I took the time to pray. For love and peace and fellowship, for hope and courage strong For quiet moments all alone, for the warmth that flows through song For freedom given to young hearts and respect for times gone by For faith that shields us all from harm, for a spirit lifted high. So I walk these trails with a thankful heart, where peace and stillness reign Beholding to those who groomed them, where once underbrush had lain Each step taken has its story, each breath a hopeful prayer Oh sweet mystery of life, you are ever present here Blessing to All A Villager
No amount of snowfall stops these determined trail walkers and their canine companions!

APRIL 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ilan Moyle, beloved husband, father, papa, uncle and friend. Ilan passed away peacefully on March 3, 2016 at the age of 76. Ilan will be sorely missed by his beloved wife, confidant, and best friend, June, his daughters, Julie, Rebecca (Alex), and Amanda, and his grandchildren whom he was so very proud of: KaleighAnne, Seth and Hayden. Ilan was predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy Moyle. Born and raised in England, Ilan joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 18 and traveled the world. He moved to Israel in 1967 to help clean up after the 6-day war and then immigrated to Canada at the age of 30. Three years later he met the love of his life, June, and her beautiful daughter Julie. Ilan and June were married on March 19, 1976 and had two more daughters, Rebecca and Amanda. Ilan worked in advertising most of his life and in 1992 started up his own successful advertising business. He enjoyed reading, golfing, camping, fishing, hockey, and weekly coffee dates with “the boys.” His most recent hobby was hand carving walking staffs out of diamond willow, and they were stunning. In 1981 Ilan gave his life to Jesus. He loved serving and was on the executive for Promise Keepers, was VP for the Men’s Alliance Group, and then served in the Southland Bookstore with June for 8 years. It was clear that Ilan’s relationship with Jesus, and his family and friends were what he held the closest to his heart. The family would like to thank the amazing team of doctors, nurses, HCA’s and housekeeping staff who cared for Ilan over the past 8 years of his illness. And to our friends and family who visited, brought meals, and showed your love for Ilan and us, we thank you. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants.” Psalm 116:15 (NIV)
Residents of Paradise Village, At the last PVRA Meeting a suggestion was made that it would be nice if we wrote a card of thanks or a note to the young people of…. The Burnstad Christian Church Box 440 Landmark, MB R0X 0X0 The conversation revealed that these young people, who do the snow clearing of our sidewalks and decks, do so voluntarily and do not receive compensation for their work. An expression of thanks would be very meaningful! Thank you. 10

The next overnight South Beach Trip is May 30/31, 2016. Call to book ASAP as these trips fill very quickly. This will be the last one until September 26/27th.
I will be calling those who have indicated an interest in Folklorama soon to confirm commitment and establish numbers to see whether we can go both weeks. I have booked hotel & buses for Aug 2/3 and 9/10. Final commitment has to be made with Folklorama organizers by mid May. Presently, I have too many for one bus and not enough for two. I hope to hear from the Snowbirds when they return. Be sure to call if you, or anyone you know, are interested.

FLORIDA CALLING: WOW!..what a hugely successful winter again here in Zephyrhills...and still so much to come back to. But our True North beckons and villagers will read this as we traverse the hills and valleys of the high speed US highways on our way home. Our challenge has been to not run out of paper money, and of course the higher exchange on Canadian currency. Canadians here have had to accomplish more with less money. Many chose to stay home, many more homes are up for sale. Younger, newer retirees with deep pockets are beginning to pick up bargains. Meanwhile, our thoughts are on our Paradise friends and new beginnings. Hugs everyone from Ila and Brian Cooper. Time to clear the bugs from the windshield.

APRIL 2016
Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Having just celebrated Easter so recently, my thoughts still linger on the wonder of, yes, the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after His death on the cross. To many, death seems so final: the “breaking of the cord of life,” the ultimate “end of all hope.” But Jesus changed all that! His resurrection unto life - to life eternal brings us a “new day” - a “new hope” - a ”new future” for everyone who places their faith and trust in God’s salvation through Christ. The Scripture verse, St. John 3:16, literally comes alive to us: “For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Yes, eternal life is now offered to us because Jesus’ sacrificial death for our sins at Calvary and His resurrection from the grave on the glorious Easter morning long ago. Thank God for a wonderful future and living hope with Christ in His magnificent home in heaven! Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870.
Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of you Village Church.

Call: 204-451-2985 or 204-881-2289 Power raking removes thatch, a tight mat of dead rhizomes, stems and roots, which builds up under the surface of a lawn. Some thatch is beneficial to lawns, but too much blocks water, air and nutrients from reaching the soil. If thatch gets thicker than 1/2 inch deep, the roots grow in the thatch instead of the soil.
Email: colinjameslawn-snow@hotmail.ca Aerating is the process of punching small holes all over your lawn. The most effective type of aerating is with a gas-powered machine called a core aerator that pulls out small cores of grass and soil. Other aerators use short spikes to punch holes in the turf. Spiking is not nearly as effective as core aerating, but it’s better than nothing.
The Enfant-Jésus Corporation: The Enfant-Jésus Corporation would like to express appreciation for all those who participated at the Walk with the Cross and the Way of the Cross on Good Friday. The weather cooperated and approximately 50 people took part from Richer and surrounding areas. Fellowship was enjoyed by all. We would also like to thank Father Gabriel Lévesque for announcing our Walk with the Cross to his congregation and for his continued support and attendance at our annual event. Spring is around the corner and we are looking forward to our Annual Spring Garage Sale Fundraiser to be held on May 27, 28 and 29th at #83 Dawson Road East. If you wish to donate items, please contact Yvonne at 204-422-9369. All proceeds will go towards the Dawson Trail Museum as we continue with the transition of the Enfant-Jésus Heritage Site into a museum and learning center as one of the first churches located along the Dawson Trail. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you in May. Our regular monthly meeting will be held on April 11 at 1p.m. at the LUD in Richer. Everyone is welcome. 35

Rosacea What is Rosacea? Rosacea (say "roh-ZAY-shuh") is a very common skin disease that affects people over the age of 30. It causes redness on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Some people get little bumps and pimples on the red parts of their faces. Rosacea can also cause burning and soreness in your eyes. Some people say that having rosacea keeps them from feeling confident at work or in social situations. If your rosacea bothers you or has gotten worse, talk to your doctor. Getting treatment can help your skin look and feel better. And it may keep your rosacea from getting worse.
What causes Rosacea? Experts are not sure what causes rosacea. They know that something irritates the skin, but rosacea doesn't seem to be an infection caused by bacteria. It tends to affect people who have fair skin or blush easily, and it seems to run in families. The pattern of redness on a person's face makes it easy for a doctor to diagnose rosacea. And most of the time medical tests are not needed or used. Rosacea is not caused by alcohol abuse, as people thought in the past. But in people who have rosacea, drinking alcohol may cause symptoms to get worse (flare). Rosacea often flares when something causes the blood vessels in the face to expand, which causes redness. Things that cause a flare-up are called triggers. Common triggers are exercise, sun and wind exposure, hot weather, stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and hot baths. Swings in temperature from hot to cold or cold to hot can also cause a flare-up of rosacea. What are the symptoms of Rosacea? People with rosacea may have: •A flushed, red face with sensitive, dry skin that may burn or sting • Small bumps and pimples or acne-like breakouts. • Skin that gets coarser and thicker, with a bumpy texture. • Dry, red, irritated eyes. In rare cases, rosacea that is not treated may cause permanent effects, such as thickening of the skin on your face or loss of vision. It may cause knobby bumps on the nose, called rhinophymacamera.gif (say "ry-no-FY-muh"). Over time, it can give the nose a swollen, waxy look. But most cases of rosacea don't progress this far. How is Rosacea treated? Doctors can prescribe medicines and other treatments for rosacea. There is no cure, but with treatment, most people can control their symptoms and keep the disease from getting worse. • Redness and breakouts can be treated with pills, such as low-dose antibiotics like doxycycline. •Skin creams that contain medicine, such as azelaic acid, brimonidine, or metronidazole. • Redness from tiny blood vessels can be treated with lasers and another light treatment called intense pulsed light (IPL). • Dry, sensitive skin can be protected with products for sensitive skin, such as moisturizers and sunscreen. • Dry, red, and irritated eyes can be treated with artificial tears or prescription eye drops that contain a medicine such as cyclosporine. • Thickened or bumpy skin on the nose or face can be treated with cosmetic surgery. How can you prevent Rosacea flare-ups? There are some things you can do to reduce symptoms and keep rosacea from getting worse. • Get any bothersome symptoms under control. A dermatologist can prescribe treatments to reduce redness and any breakouts. • Find your triggers. One of the most important things is to learn what triggers your flare-ups, and then avoid them. It can help to keep a diary of what you were eating, drinking, and doing on days that the rosacea appeared. Take the diary to your next doctor visit, and discuss what you can do to help control the disease. • Protect your face. Stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm. When you are outdoors, protect your face by wearing a widebrimmed hat or visor. Use a sunscreen that is rated SPF 30 or higher every day. If your skin is dry, find a moisturizer with sunscreen. • Be gentle with your skin. Use skin care products for sensitive skin, and avoid any products that scratch or irritate your skin. Try not to rub or scrub your skin. • Take care of your eyes. Gently wash your eyelids with a product made for the eyes. Apply a warm, wet cloth several times a day. Use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry. Or talk to your doctor about medicine you can put into your eyes. 36

21 Suggestions For a Good Old Age...... Some of us have reached our golden years, and some of us have not. But these suggestions should be read by everyone. They have been collected from many a senior, each with his or her own piece of advice. Some you know, some may surprise you, and some will remind you of what's important. So read well, share with your loved ones, and have a great day and a great life! 1. It's time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don't just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard earned capital. Warning: This is also a bad time for an investment, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries and this is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet. 2. Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don't feel bad spending your money on yourself. You've taken care of them for many years, and you've taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money. 3. Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, get tested even when you're feeling well. Stay informed. 4. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together. 5. Don't stress over the little things. You've already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don't let the past drag you down and don't let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten. 6. Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: "A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection." 7. Be proud, both inside and out. Don't stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong. 8. Don't lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. There's nothing worse than an older person trying to wear the current fashion among youngsters. You've developed your own sense of what looks good on you - keep it and be proud of it. It's part of who you are. 9. ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You'll be surprised which old friends you'll meet. Keeping in touch with what is going on and with the people you know is important at any age. 10. Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideals as you, but they are the future, and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them of yesterday's wisdom that still applies today. 11. Never use the phrase: "In my time". Your time is now. As long as you're alive, you are part of this time. You may have been younger, but you are still you now, having fun and enjoying life. 12. Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it'll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you older and harder to be around. 38
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
13. Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. If you've lost your partner (our deepest condolences), then find a person to move in with you and help out. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live alone. 14. Don't abandon your hobbies. If you don't have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf. You can paint, volunteer at an NGO or just collect certain items. Find something you like and spend some real time having fun with it. 15. Even if you don't feel like it, try to accept invitations. Baptisms, graduations, birthdays, weddings, conferences. Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven't seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). But don't get upset when you're not invited. Some events are limited by resources, and not everyone can be hosted. The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a field. Get out there. 16. Be a conversationalist. Talk less and listen more. Some people go on and on about the past, not caring if their listeners are really interested. That's a great way of reducing their desire to speak with you. Listen first and answer questions, but don't go off into long stories unless asked to. Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are. Everyone is going through the same things, and people have a low tolerance for hearing complaints. Always find some good things to say as well. 17. Pain and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the cycle of life we're all going through. Try to minimize them in your mind. They are not who you are, they are something that life added to you. If they become your entire focus, you lose sight of the person you used to be. 18. If you've been offended by someone - forgive them. If you've offended someone - apologize. Don't drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn't matter who was right. Someone once said: "Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die." Don't take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with your life. 19. If you have a strong belief, savor it. But don't waste your time trying to convince others. They will make their own choices no matter what you tell them, and it will only bring you frustration. Live your faith and set an example. Live true to your beliefs and let that memory sway them. 20. Laugh. Laugh A LOT. Laugh at everything. Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. But you did. So what's not to laugh about? Find the humor in your situation. 21. Take no notice of what others say about you and even less notice of what they might be thinking. They'll do it anyway, and you should have pride in yourself and what you've achieved. Let them talk and don't worry. They have no idea about your history, your memories and the life you've lived so far. There's still much to be written, so get busy writing and don't waste time thinking about what others might think. Now is the time to be at rest, at peace and as happy as you can be! AND REMEMBER: "Life is too short to drink bad wine."
