AUGUST 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil August is here already! Every month, when I have completed the newsletter, it feels like I have tons of time until the next month‌but time goes by too fast. I would like to thank all of you who help me fill in the newsletter each month. On that note, of those in charge of the activities, could you please send me dates of when and what time these activities are during the year so that I can put them correctly onto the calendar. Thanks in advance.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village James (Jim) Horsfall –2 Sunset Drive, Jim moved to Paradise from across the highway, just on the other side of Country Charm Resort. He took possession on April 15, 2016. Jim has many talents and hobbies. He said that he inherited his craftsmanship from his grandfather and father, who operated a cabinet shop in Winnipeg for many years. He keeps himself busy with things like, woodworking, sketching (illustrations), wood carving, and upholstery. Jim showed us some pictures of some of the beautiful work of arts that they created. Jim also had many stories of his working career in Montreal, and Winnipeg. Although Jim had retired, he returned to his previous employment at a Heavy Equipment Dealership. Jim, known as Pa-Pa, has 2 children and 4 grandchildren. In his spare time he likes baseball, and loves to tinker. We went over the events and the activities that are held, and also mentioned some of the many activities that are yet to come. Welcome to Paradise Village Jim. Ralph & Marilyn Brooke – 18 Nature Drive Ralph and Marilyn moved to Paradise Village, from River Heights, in Winnipeg, Mb. Although, they had purchased their home in August 2015, they only moved in July 8, 2016. They are busy renovating and giving their new home a fresh look. They also have had time to do some socializing with the neighbours and friends here in Paradise, and so far they are having great time meeting some new people. Marilyn retired from the position of Librarian at Red River College and Manitoba Health. She is an artist and loves to do crafts, gardening, and music. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music and also taught Piano. Marilyn also runs the Big Band Jam in Mesa, when they go south for the winter. She has joined the Jammers that meet in Ste Anne. Ralph is a “Jack of all Trades” as we could see with all the renovations he has been doing. He is a natural born athlete. He enjoys golfing, shooting pool, and all the sports. We saw some pictures of his comical side of his golfing attire. He also enjoys Classical Music. We talked about the activities and events that are coming up in Paradise, and also were happy that they have already attended some of these events. Welcome to Paradise, and hope to see you at the many functions that are held. 3

AUGUST 2016 Hosted by the Paradise Village Mixed Golf League….. ….held on Friday, July 15th, at the Oakwood Golf Course was a beautiful day for golfing and getting together. 44 Residents showed up to golf and many more came out to enjoy the meal put on by the Oakwood Golf Course. It was very good and there was plenty to eat for $10.95. Shortly after dinner prizes and door prizes were handed out. The Putting Contest was cancelled because it would have overlapped into dinner. Maybe next year. Thank you to all of the volunteers and the staff of the Oakwood Golf Course. “Hooked” or “Green is the Colour of his True Love’s Hair” The sun shone bright, the sky was clear, “Shirt sleeve weather” was finally here! And with the greening grass, the “call”: Revives the worship of the “Little White Ball” Soon the familiar sounding “crack” as club meets ball and tee flies back. The loud exclamation: “What a great shot!” The bitter anguish when it’s not. All part of the game, or dare I say: The “addicting habit” for come what may. They keep coming back to lower their score, and pay the price: Green fees, lost balls, and more. The warm wind whispers on that sunny day: “You’re hooked, duffer!” “And you won’t get away!”

“Your pride will bring you back for more: Even one stroke off last week’s score!” Back home, the little wife sits all alone; Thinks, “O where has my hubby’s love flown? “He used to whisper, “Honey, you’re so fair!” But now, “Green is the colour of his true love’s hair!” Submitted by Dennis Hall, Former Golfer 4

A husband going golfing…. The wife asks, “Where are you going?” “I’m going golfing,” he replies. She says, “I want you to fix the door. It is not closing properly.” He replies, “You don’t see Carpenter written across my forehead do you?” She says, “I want you to check that electric socket. It’s not working either.” He replies, “You don’t see Electrician written across my forehead, do you?” So, while the husband was golfing, the wife got a repairman to fix both of the problems. When the husband came home he noticed the door was fixed and also the electric socket. He asks, “Who did the job?” The wife replies, “I called a repairman.” “What did you pay him?” he asks. The wife replies, “I asked him if he wanted a batch of cookies or sex.” So the husband says, “I guess you gave him some cookies?” The wife replies, “You don’t see Betty Crocker written across my forehead do you?” Submitted by Julian Degraves

BADGERING OFFICIAL A farmer was in his barn when a vehicle pulled into his driveway. The car had markings on the door stating it was an official government vehicle. A man got out and proceeded to inform the farmer that he was an official warden. He flashed his badge and told the farmer that the badge allowed him to investigate and go anywhere he wanted to on the farm, looking for anything illegal. He went on and on about his authority that this badge bestowed upon him. The farmer shrugged and said "No problem. Go anywhere you want but not that field" He then went into the barn to do some chores. A few minutes later he heard the official screaming outside. He ran out to see what was the matter, only to discover that the man had ventured into the field he had been warned not to enter and was being chased by a bull “DO SOMETHING" the man yelled at the farmer, “THIS BULL IS GOING TO KILL ME!” The farmer yelled back, ''SHOW HIM YOUR BADGE!” Submitted by Anne Prior

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

As mentioned in July’s Message, a meeting occurred with Management and your Executive. A “positive meeting” for both parties. We voiced our concerns, they voiced theirs. We both came away form the meeting agreeing that further meetings would be desirable. A couple of Management concerns were: dumping of twigs/tree trimmings/grass cuttings. These ARE NOT to be put into the bush or left at the sides of the roads. Twigs/branches/trimmings are to be cut up into 3 foot lengths, bundled and tied and left at the end of your driveway. You would then call the Office and arrangements will be made to collect them. Rumours were addressed and hopefully put to rest. Anyone having an issue or a concern is advised to contact Management through the Office (I suggest with a letter addressed to them, keeping a copy for yourself) and they will address the issue or concern. The Office has “live animal traps” if you are having problems with rodents, feral cats, etc. You should have received your “Villager” newsletter from the Office. It is very informative and hopefully it has answered some of your concerns. Next year’s PVRA Phonebook will also have e-mail addresses included for everyone’s convenience. Once again; enough said. TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS - 2016 Dear Friends, On behalf of Holy Cross School and the Tabs for Wheelchairs program, I would like to thank everyone who has faithfully collected tabs, cans, metals of any kind and given them to your faithful organizers at Paradise Village, Frank and Doreen Leys, who in turn have cashed them in for our program. You have amazingly contributed over $1700 in the last year! That is absolutely fantastic! Words can’t express how grateful we are for your generosity of time and energy! The wheelchair presentation to Jessica went beautifully and it was an unbelievable feeling to see her receive this specialized chair that has the capability of being elevated, in order for her to work in a kitchen and also give her greater mobility every day! If you missed watching it on the CTV news, you can go to http://bit.ly/28RaniO and see a little clip of the presentation. I know that you will continue doing what you have been doing and I hope even more people get involved as we would like to present two wheelchairs in 2018 as it is our 20 th Anniversary that year. In order to do that, we need a lot more people saving! Our recipient for 2017 has already been chosen and her name is Delaney Kolowca. If you would like, another way to support the program is by giving a cash donation. Income Tax Receipts will be given for anything over $20. Since there might be a Postal Strike in the near future, you could give it to Frank or Doreen and they will make sure that we get it. You should write the cheque to Holy Cross School and put “Tabs for Wheelchairs” in the bottom left hand corner. Thanks once again for your wonderful support and hope we will see more of you at our next wheelchair presentation! Gwen Buccini, Coordinator of Tabs for Wheelchairs at Holy Cross School 10

I know some of you own GUNS but this is something to think about...If you don't have a gun, here's a more humane way to wreck someone's evil plans for you. Did you know this? I didn't. Wasp Spray - A receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close to you and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the office & it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. Thought this was interesting and might be of use.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church PRAYER is the highest form of communication: It is communion with God. David, the Psalmist exclaims: “O Thou that hearest prayer, unto Thee shall all flesh come (Psalm 65:2) Prayer to the Heavenly Father is the wonderful privilege of every man, woman and child on earth. It is also a place of great joy & peace in the presence of God. Someone said: “Prayer is so simple! It is like opening a door and slipping into the very presence of God. There in the stillness to listen to His voice. Perhaps to petition your requests, or perhaps to just listen: it matters not. JUST TO BE THERE IN HIS PRESENCE: THAT IS PRAYER.” Martin Luther declared: “Prayer is the most important thing in my life. If I should neglect prayer for a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.” Jesus gives us a special invitation: “Come unto Me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will giver you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) It’s for ALL who will accept His bidding….

Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.

Paradise Village Singles Who said that fellows can’t be perfect hosts? Steve proved this theory absolutely wrong when he hosted our July get together. Great job Steve! We loved your spacious venue with the over flow area in the comfortable sun room. Nineteen attended including new attendees June & Alice & guest Bev (Bernice’s sister). We certainly enjoyed their company and hope they will be regulars. The birthday celebrant was June who was “caked” and toasted in typical fashion. Carol reminded the group that the Singles Club is responsible for the Paradise Breakfast in September. A meeting will be held soon to discuss the menu etc. Later on in July Vida arranged a trip to the Geppetto’s Mini Golf and six ladies participated. Between rains we played 18 holes (there were several hole in ones.) We then explored the fascinating shop and had a super lunch at the “Timberline”.

Playing Card Facts & Trivia Some interesting facts (or possibly fiction) about playing cards. It is said that each of the suits on a deck of cards in a card game represents the four major pillars of the economy in the Middle Ages: Hearts represented the Church, Spades represented the Military, Clubs represented Agriculture, and Diamonds represented the Merchant Class. Each face card in a deck of playing cards is said to represent a great person from history: Knave (Jack) of Spades – Ogier the Dane/Holger Danske (a Knight of Charlemagne) Knave (Jack) of Hearts – La Hire (Comrade-in-Arms to Joan of Arc, & member of Charles VII’s court) Knave (Jack) of Diamonds – Hector Knave (Jack) of Clubs – Judas Maccabeus, or Lancelot Queen of Spades – Pallas Queen of Hearts – Judith Queen of Diamonds – Rachel (either biblical, historical (see Charles above), or mythical as a corruption of the Celtic Ragnel, relating to Lancelot below) Queen of Clubs – Argine (possibly an anagram of Regina, which is Latin for queen, or perhaps Argea, wife of Polybus and mother of Argus) King of Spades – David King of Hearts – Charles (possibly Charlemagne, or Charles VII, where Rachel would then be the pseudonym of his mistress, Agnès Sorel) King of Diamonds – Julius Caesar King of Clubs – Alexander the Great The King of Hearts is the only king without a mustache and is the only king with a sword through his head, otherwise known as the “Suicide King”. The Face Cards (King, Queen & Jack) are referred to as the “Court”. 52 cards represents the 52 weeks in a year 4 suits represents the 4 seasons 13 cards in each suit represents the 13 weeks in each season 12 Royals represent the 12 months 2 red and 2 black suits represent the 4 different solstices The 4 suits also represent the four natural elements Hearts = Water, Clubs = Fire, Diamonds = Earth Spades = Air

An interesting fact about playing cards is that the speciallyconstructed decks were sent to American soldiers who were being held in German camps during World War II. The United States Playing Card Company collaborated with the government in the production of these cards. What made these cards so unique was, once they became wet, they peeled apart. Inside, the prisoners found parts of maps that would lead them to freedom. 27

Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 65. ARMD occurs when the macula degrades. The result is vision distortion and the loss of central vision. There are 2 forms of age-related macular degeneration, the dry form and the wet form. Lasers can be used to treat fragile, leaky vessels that occur in wet ARMD. There are no treatments yet to prevent vision loss from advanced cases of dry ARMD. Factors that may increase the risk of macular degeneration include increasing age, smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, heredity, and a diet low in green leafy vegetables. Nutrients that appear to benefit age-related macular degeneration are the carotenoids: beta-carotene and lutein/ zeaxathin, vitamins C and E, and the mineral selenium. The results of a study sponsored by the National Eye Institute, the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), provides the basis for the inclusion of certain vitamins and minerals in many eye supplements currently on the market. This study examined the benefit on eye health of a supplement containing 500 mg vitamin C, 400 IUs vitamin E, 15 mg beta carotene, 80 mg Zinc as zinc oxide and 2 mg of copper as cupric oxide. The results showed that taking the formulation reduced the risk of developing advanced ARMD in people at high risk for progression by about 25% over a 5-year period. The results from a second study, AREDS 2, found that adding omega 3 fatty acids to the formulation had no additional effect on the risk of ARMD. Eliminating beta-carotene and adding lutein/zeaxanthin was found to be a safe and effective alternative to the use of beta- carotene. In conclusion, there are important nutrients that play a significant role in three eye conditions. These nutrients include, the carotenoids: beta-carotene and lutein/zeaxanthin, vitamins C and E, the minerals zinc and selenium. All of these nutrients are potent antioxidants and are found in a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, seafood, and poultry.

I, myself, was just diagnosed by my Optometrist with Dry ARMD and I have to say I was freaked out and then‌. I found out my grandmother had it too. Life is life huh! My Naturopath advised me that taking a supplement is needed but to remember that the lifestyle my grandmother had was different than mine and we are more aware of ways to slow down the process. So I am doing that! Debbie Kokil, 5 Parkview Drive 32

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Subject: Catching a Thief BBB 160707 Car wash..... Amazing!!!! Bill owns a company that manufactures and installs car wash systems. Bill's company installed a car wash system in Frederick, Maryland. Now, understand that these are complete systems, including the money changer and money taking machines. The problem started when the new owner complained to Bill that he was losing significant amounts of money from his coin machines each week. He went as far as to accuse Bill's employees of having a key to the boxes and ripping him off. Bill just couldn't believe that his people would do that, so they set up a camera to catch the thief in action. Well, they did catch him on film! That's a bird sitting on the change slot of the machine. The bird had to go down into the machine, and back up inside to get to the money! That's three quarters he has in his beak! Another amazing thing is that it was not just one bird -- there were several working together. Once they identified the thieves, they found over $4,000 in quarters on the roof of the car wash and more under a nearby tree. And you thought you'd heard of everything! This gives a new twist to the term "nest egg.” And to think the phrase 'bird brain' is associated with being dumb. Not these birds. Share the story! Life's too short, so enjoy! My takeaways from this: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Blackbirds matter. Blackbirds work as a group/gang. Blackbirds are angry at whitebirds. Blackbirds are not dumb (smart as an Eagle). Blackbirds don’t really need a “nest egg” when they already get everything “free” from the birdgivers. 6. Young blackbirds get fat, large blackbirds get “busted.”
