PVRA Newsletter February 2016

February 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil 

To the Chicken Chef Restaurant in Lorette, we apologize for offending you in last month’s newsletter. It was not our intention.

To the Residents of Paradise Village, Family, and Friends, during the last week in January, a resident’s garage was entered and food stolen from the freezer and, a suspicious individual was chased away, when found tampering with a lighted motion sensor on a garage. The RCMP have been notified. Please be sure to lock your garages and keep your eyes and ears open for any more situations like the above and then contact the RCMP.

When parking on both sides of the street please park before or after the vehicle on the other side as this blocks the street for other vehicles to pass through. If an ambulance needed to get through it would be impossible.

The Recreation Center’s Weight Machine has been serviced and two new cables have been replaced. The Recumbent Bike was also repaired, partially. A bearing is gone but the motor works for the levels of tension. The tension has also been reduced to allow for smoother pedaling. Those who use this machine should feel a significant difference.

Yahoo, the pool feels warmer now and soon it will be Spring!

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

The first night of our dart year started with most regulars and a few new faces, which we always welcome. New dart players are always somewhat nervous to try their hand at the game, but after they have played a few games they realize that we do it for the fun and socializing over all. What better way to meet new people while trying a new game! We have a great bunch of dart players, after all. December 14 found us donning hats for our annual Paradise Dart League Xmas Fun Night. We played three “different" games than we usually play during the year. The most challenging, we decided, was 501, ending with a triple out instead of the normal double out. We all agreed afterwards that it was more of a challenge than fun, but fun nevertheless. Small prize draws were made after each game which let all win, regardless of dart skills. Snacks, refreshments & socializing between games made for a most enjoyable evening. Our last game this year was on Dec.28. Margaret & Ragnar Erlendson have graciously agreed to manage the league from January to mid April when we return from AZ. Our Annual Windup Tournament will be held on April 25th. The annual BBQ/Steak night will be May 9th. Those wishing to join the Dart League can contact Ragnar or Margaret at 422-5844. Submitted by Cam and Phil Miron

A Well-Planned Retirement Outside England 's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant..... The fees for cars ($1.40), for buses (about $7). Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the zoo management called the city council and asked it to send them another parking agent. The council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the zoo's own responsibility. The zoo advised the council that the attendant was a city employee. The city council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the city payroll. Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy is a man who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees,

estimated at about $560 per day — for 25 years. Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars ..... and no one even knows his name. 17

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

This is a Keeper I grew up with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen before they had a name for it. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dishtowel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away ... never to return. So ... While we have it ... it's best we love it ... And care for it ... And fix it when it's broken ... And heal it when it's sick. This is true. For marriage ... And old cars ... And children with bad report cards ... And dogs with bad hips ... And aging parents ... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special ... And so, we keep them close! I received this from someone who thinks I am 'a keeper', so I've sent it to the people I think of in the same way ... Now it's your turn to send this to those people that are "keepers" in your life. Good friends are like stars ... You don't always see them, but you know they are always there. Keep them close! Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many. 23

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Looking around in our old world as 2016 advances, two contrasting words come to mind in describing the “temper of the times”: “trepidation” (trembling, alarm, fear, dread, etc.) and “tranquility” (calmness, serenity, peacefulness, etc.) No doubt, we easily identify “trepidation” in the many acts of terrorism and atrocities world wide and even in Canada. But, “tranquility?” Harder to visualize: more subtle, individual, personal. Like the eye of the hurricane: calm, undisturbed. When all around rages horrendous destruction; like the “peace in the midst of the storm”, the inward assurance that, “all is well with my soul.” Tranquility is something within us, personally. Though some “calmness” may be found through a “positive attitude” and “quiet reflection”, there is a much deeper, more certain source readily available found in a personal relationship with Jesus, who said: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you: not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (St. John 14:27) Yours and mine for the asking.

Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall.

MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of you Village Church.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Warren Walterson - 14 Village Drive moved from Red Deere, Alberta on December 12, 2015. Warren was a former Manitoban and when he decided to return, he knew one thing for sure and that was he did not want to live in the City. He did some research and found that Paradise Village was a peaceful and beautiful community conveniently located less than half an hour east of Winnipeg, he also had a brother and sister-in-law living here and so decided to relocate here. From our conversation you can tell Warren has made the right decision. In our Village, we enjoy a maintenance free lifestyle while not sacrificing our own private home, garden, and yard. I outlined all the activities and events offered at the Recreation Center and Warren was definitely interested in some of these. Warren was with the Royal Bank for many years and later went into landscaping. He's a great cook, in fact while I was there for the interview, he had a loaf of bread on the go, he also likes golfing and doing renovations. Warren has 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Warren welcome to the Village and we hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners, and other activities offered here. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living in our beautiful Paradise Village. Evelyn Fillion - 03 Paradise Drive - moved from Woodridge, Manitoba to our beautiful and charming Paradise Village on December 15, 2015. Evelyn is a very organized lady as it appeared she was all settled in and happy to be here. Over a cup of coffee, she revealed to me that she feels it was God's plan to relocate her to Paradise Village. I went over the variety of activities offered here in the Village and she will become involved in some of them. Prior to retirement, Evelyn was in the health care field for a number of years. She can hardly wait for spring as gardening is definitely one of her big interests. Evelyn also loves fishing, golfing, and baking. She has 2 children and 6 grandchildren whom also take up a lot her time. We hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, and other activities offered here in the Village. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents. Welcome to Paradise Village, Evelyn.

A group of friends went deer hunting and paired off in twos for the day. That night one of the hunters returned alone, staggering under an eight-point buck. "Where’s Harry?" he was asked. "Harry had a stroke of some kind. He’s a couple of miles back up the trail."

Continuous Eaves Troughs

"You left Harry laying there, and carried the deer back?" "Well," said the hunter, "I figured no one was going to steal Harry." Submitted by Julian DeGrave

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

We spend our lives seeking happiness, but happiness doesn't come from achievements or money or any sort of treasure. Happiness is a frame of mind, not a destination. It's appreciating what you've got and building relationships with those around you. --Jeanette Rollison--.

John Lennon wrote: "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down "happy". They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I said they didn't understand life."

Success is getting what you want. Happiness is liking what you get. The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything: they make the best of everything they have. Be Happy--Be Yourself. If others don't like it, then let them be. Happiness is a choice, choose it everyday. Life isn't about pleasing everybody. Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've decided to look beyond the imperfections. Happiness is the art of never holding in your mind the memory of any unpleasant thing that has passed.--Buddha Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory.--Albert Schweitzer When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been open for us.---Helen Keller Doing what you like is freedom. Liking what you do is happiness. Five simple rules for happiness: 1) Free your heart from hatred 2) Free your mind from worries 3) Live simply 4) Give more 5) Expect less Smile--Happiness looks gorgeous on you. AND Be happy with the little that you have. There are people with nothing that still manage to smile!

February is Heart Month 2016 What is Cardiovascular Disease? Heart and blood vessel disease — also called heart disease — includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.

A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked by a blood clot. If this clot cuts off the blood flow completely, the part of the heart muscle supplied by that artery begins to die. Most people survive their first heart attack and return to their normal lives to enjoy many more years of productive activity. But having a heart attack does mean you have to make some changes. The doctor will advise you of medications and lifestyle changes according to how badly the heart was damaged and what degree of heart disease caused the heart attack. Learn more about heart attack.

An ischemic stroke (the most common type) happens when a blood vessel that feeds the brain gets blocked, usually from a blood clot. When the blood supply to a part of the brain is shut off, brain cells will die. The result will be the inability to carry out some of the previous functions as before like walking or talking. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel within the brain bursts. The most likely cause is uncontrolled hypertension.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Some effects of stroke are permanent if too many brain cells die after a stroke due to lack of blood and oxygen to the brain. These cells are never replaced. The good news is that some brain cells don't die — they're only temporarily out of order. Injured cells can repair themselves. Over time, as the repair takes place, some body functioning improves. Also, other brain cells may take control of those areas that were injured. In this way, strength may improve, speech may get better and memory may improve. This recovery process is what rehabilitation is all about. Learn more about stroke. Other Types of Cardiovascular Disease Heart failure: This doesn't mean that the heart stops beating. Heart failure, sometimes called congestive heart failure, means the heart isn't pumping blood as well as it should. The heart keeps working, but the body's need for blood and oxygen isn't being met. Heart failure can get worse if it's not treated. If your loved one has heart failure, it's very important to follow the doctor's orders. Learn more about heart failure. Arrhythmia: This is an abnormal rhythm of the heart. There are various types of arrhythmias. The heart can beat too slow, too fast or irregularly. Bradycardia is when the heart rate is less than 60 beats per minute. Tachycardia is when the heart rate is more than 100 beats per minute. An arrhythmia can affect how well the heart works. The heart may not be able to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Learn more about arrhythmia. Heart valve problems: When heart valves don't open enough to allow the blood to flow through as it should, it's called stenosis. When the heart valves don't close properly and allow blood to leak through, it's called regurgitation. When the valve leaflets bulge or prolapse back into the upper chamber, it’s a condition called mitral valve prolapse. When this happens, they may not close properly. This allows blood to flow backward through them.

February 2016 The Legal Adventures of the Smith Family This is the second installment in the series of unfortunate events that befall the fictional Smith family. These stories are based on real cases that have been litigated by other lawyers throughout Canada and will help to inform you about the importance of estate planning. Our Family Tree Scenario is as follows: John Smith and his wife Jane are 65 years old. They have three beautiful children in their 40’s and five wonderful grandchildren who are young adults. Though one of these children, Frank, is not John’s by birth, he has helped Jane raise him from infancy, and as such feels he is, and treats him as though, he one of his own. It looks like great-grandchildren may be on the way shortly.

Last Episode In the last installment, John Smith (age 65) suffered a fall and as a result, lost his ability to communicate and manage his money. His family fought over control of his affairs because he did not have a power of attorney set up. His wife Jane unexpectedly passed away without a will during John’s illness, leaving her funds to be divided according to The Intestate Succession Act. In today’s article, we will begin to look at how her property was divided and what it meant to the family.

The Need for a Will Jane had a significant estate when she passed away. First, she had inherited a double wide mobile home from her first husband that the couple resided in. Second, she had two joint bank accounts, one with John ($20,000) and one with her son Frank($200,000). Third, she also had a bank account in her name alone from inheritance money, which totaled over $100,000. Finally, she had RRSP’s worth $100,000 that she acquired prior to her marriage to John (and ultimately with the market ups and downs, were basically the same value upon her death) and had Frank designated as beneficiary. However, Jane had always told John that she had named John as the sole beneficiary. The Intestate Succession Act describes how an estate, or portion thereof, is handled: A) without a will to guide it; or B) where the Will does not deal with a particular portion of the estate properly (or at all), perhaps because the will was not drafted correctly. Applying this Act to our fact scenario: A) John is entitled to 75% of Jane’s estate and the other 25% will be divided equally amongst all of Jane’s children (Note: had this happened to John, Frank would have been excluded from entitlement as he is not John’s legal son). The questions that arise are: A) Is the mobile home a homestead? (We will consider this in our next article) B) Are the Joint Accounts to be considered assets of the estate? B) A court order will be required, granting Letters of Administration to a next of Kin that the court deems willing and appropriate, to manage the estate;

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Back to our story: A year after Jane’s death, John was slowly recovering from his health issues and felt that with the help of one of his own children (notably he did not want to work with step-son Frank because of Frank’s new gambling “hobby”) he could take care of Jane’s estate. Frank had held off on applying to court while John was recovering, and when John mentioned to him that John would like to manage the estate, Frank decided that he himself would be a better administrator and applied to court to be appointed. John became aware of this and had to hire a lawyer to challenge Frank’s request. The litigation was costly and physically draining for John but he was eventually successful in being named the sole administrator of the estate. Frank drained the joint account he had with Jane, and demanded that John sell the mobile home and give him his share. None of the children were interested in the joint bank account that Jane had with John, but Jane’s joint bank account with Frank was a hot issue. It contained nearly $200,000.00 and Frank felt he had a right to it alone. His siblings disagreed, saying that Frank was only named on the account to help their mother pay the bills, and that he was not entitled to the whole amount. Frank had to hire his own lawyer and present evidence before the court that the account was intended to pass to him on Jane’s death. The court eventually found, in this case, that the account was intended to go to Frank, but only after significantly more legal costs were incurred by John. The siblings were also upset to find out that they do not get to share in any of Jane’s $100,000 of RRSP’s which designated Frank as the sole beneficiary. Frank claimed these from the RRSP company shortly after Jane’s death. Notwithstanding John’s many discussions with Jane where she had told him that she had changed the beneficiary to John, without written evidence of this (duly executed) John had no claim to these RRSP’s. Had they increased substantially in value during the marriage, the outcome may have been different. The siblings were very upset over being largely left out from their mother’s estate and felt that she would have wanted a more equal distribution. Frank continued to demand that John move out of the mobile home that his birth dad bought with Jane. Back to court they went. If Jane had a will in place before she died, all of these legal costs and family squabbling could have been avoided. She could have simply passed her estate to John, or provided for John and her children however she desired. The effect of not having a will was that her end of life wishes were not taken into account, her family fought several legal battles and her estate was largely diminished as a result of those legal costs.

What to Take from this Story Wills are important documents which make sure that your estate passes to your family in a protected manner and in the way you intend.
