January 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil Message From Linda Fulkerson - I will be away for the Winter and should be back at the end of April. The library in the Recreation Center is looked after by me but since I will be away I trust that you will be on your honour and return any books used once done reading them and keep things in a tidy manner. If someone wants to take over for me please feel free to do so. The job requires a general cleanup from time to time. Thank you and happy reading! Message From the PVRA Executive - There will be a General Meeting on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 7:00 pm as called by your President, Brian Vanderbeek. Please be sure to read over the minutes from the last General Meeting held back in November 2015, as provided with your January newsletter. Message From Debbie Kokil, Editor - It has been a pleasure creating this newsletter over the past year for the Residents of Paradise Village. I continue to appreciate all input, suggestions, articles, information and humour that is provided each month. I big thank you to the many businesses who support this newsletter every year with their advertising. I also want to thank the PVRA Executive for their financial support, our newsletter volunteer delivery team, our many talented picture takers that support the articles, and those who tell me what a great job I do. Everyone please have a healthy, wealthy, and happy 2016!

An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats in the movie theater. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, "Sorry sir, but you're only allowed one seat." The old man just groaned but didn't budge. The usher became more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from there I'm going to have to call the manager."
The next Social Committee Meeting Is
Once again, the old man just groaned. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old disheveled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police. The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, "All right buddy what's your name?" "Fred," the old man moaned. "Where ya from, Fred?" asked the police officer. With terrible pain in his voice, and without moving a muscle, Fred replied, "The balcony."

The Paradise Village Annual Christmas Dinner Write-up The Christmas Dinner held on Saturday, December 12th, was an outstanding success. It was a traditional meal, served to a sell-out crowd, catered by Chicken Chef from Lorette. After dinner we were entertained by Barry Creran on the accordion and Jim Hildred on the guitar. They played familiar Christmas carols to which residents joined in singing along with Barry and Jim. At this time we would like to thank all the generous people who donated all the items for the door prizes. This was very much appreciated! Special gratitude to Rose for her undying dedication, when it comes to the social events, at the Recreation Center. Thank you to all the volunteers who donated their time and effort! And last but not least, thank you to all the residents and management and staff for taking part in making this event such an enjoyable and festive evening! Congratulations to the following big winners: Pat Simister - 50/50 draw of $209.00 Crystal Mueller - Gift Basket Don Gauthier - Lottery/Money Tree Submitted by Olga Baschak

PARADISE SQUARES by Larry Trush Our Christmas Dance on December 15th was enjoyed by all. During the evening a ``Bah Humbug`` skit was put on and included group participation which drew a lot of laughs. Later Denise and son Mathieu led in the singing of Christmas songs and all joined in. Co-president Laura made a presentation to Ernie and Shirley thanking them for a “job well done. After dancing everyone dug into the delicious food and goodies to round out the evening. A great way to end the first half of the dancing season.

From the Tab Man…..Frank Leys In the Recreation Center, you will find a Thank You card from Gwen Buccini, Tabs for Wheelchair Coordinator, thanking the residents of Paradise Village for their continued support of the wheelchair program. In the year of 2015, your contributions totalled $1,233.00. This year’s recipient of a specialized wheelchair is Jessica. She is 18 years old and an upcoming Grade 12 graduate from Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler. She was born with Spina Bifida and has spinal nerve damage to her lower spine and has been in a wheelchair all her life. She would like to become more independent and one day live on her own. With the specialized wheelchair she will be receiving in May 2016, it will give her greater mobility and allow her to become more independent. Special Thanks to everyone who has donated their tabs and cans, and to those who donate their time and efforts to support the Tabs for Wheelchair program. Once again, “THANK YOU”. Together we will make a difference!!

Membership at Pat Porter Active Living Centre is only $25 per year. Memberships are due in January of each year. Membership is for those 55 years of age and older. Benefits include reduced program rates, a voice in business meetings, voting rights, and eligibility to serve on the board or committees. There are many benefits of having a Senior Centre:
Fit seniors live longer, remain in their homes longer and participate more fully in life. Contribution to the community in a person's leisure time brings meaning to life and provides value to the community. Community involvement reduces alienation.
Physical and mental health achieved through recreation and balanced, meaning lifestyles reduces expensive health care costs. A physically active and fit senior is able to remain in the community longer, caring for them self. Investment in "active living" for seniors is wise. The costly alternative of institutional care should be perceived as a last resort. For more information on our programs, activities or volunteer opportunities, drop by the Centre between Monday and Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm OR call 320-4600. OR go to www.patporteralc.com 12

Whether a man winds up with a nest egg, or a goose egg, depends a lot on the kind of chick he marries. Trouble in marriage often starts when a man gets so busy earnin' his salt, that he forgets his sugar. Too many couples marry for better, or for worse, but not for good. When a man marries a woman, they become one; but the trouble starts when they try to decide which one. If a man has enough horse sense to treat his wife like a thoroughbred, she will never turn into an old nag. On anniversaries, the wise husband always forgets the past - but never the present. A foolish husband says to his wife, "Honey, you stick to the washin', ironin', cookin', and scrubbin'. No wife of mine is gonna work." The bonds of matrimony are a good investment, only when the interest is kept up. Many girls like to marry a military man - he can cook, sew, and make beds, and is in good health, and he's already used to taking orders. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age, and start bragging about it. The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved. How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth.... Remember about Algebra. You know you are getting old, when everything either dries up, or leaks. I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald, they don't recognize you. If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old. Have a GREAT day.......and keep Laughing

Paradise Village Singles - December
PARADISE VILLAGE
Our Xmas Party for the singles was held on Monday, December 7th @ Myrna's. We had 24 attend and 3 newcomers. Welcome Toni Johnson, Susan Quistberg, and Steve Bloomer. It seemed they really enjoyed themselves and hopefully they plan to come again. A welcome also to Val Mallen who joined our party from Wpg. What a good time we had. Lots of laughter and socializing. The house and tables were decorated for Xmas. The turkey, plus all the trimmings, was served and it was delicious. We had room to sit everyone down and enjoyed dinner together ---which I worked very hard to accomplish (our mobiles are bigger than u think!) We had two birthday girls, Pat and Cynthia! The cakes were really good and calorie free. We had a gift exchange after the meal and no trading was necessary we all liked what we received. Oh yes, there was one gentleman who wanted to trade; but he had no takers. SORRY. Thanks for all the help Phil and to everyone who brought food and to Darlene who made the Xmas box to put our gifts in. Merry Xmas to u all and see u next time at Larry Menec's, 18 Village Drive, on Monday, January 4, 2016. Phone if u plan to attend. 204-422-5712 Great turn out with three new faces
Happy Birthday Pat and Cynthia!

Back by popular demand IF there is enough interest! The last three years have been awesome A “sign up sheet” will be posted in the Rec Centre Folklorama 2016 is requesting confirmation of trips already so I need to know how many people are interested in attending. Some people have indicated interest but I need quite a few more to make it work. The cost is $100.00 per person (based on double occupancy) and anyone who has gone in the past will tell you it is a real bargain. If you would like the opportunity to go to Folklorama without the line-ups, hassle of parking, enjoy preferential treatment at the pavilions and also get to enjoy both of the Casinos of Winnipeg and stay at the Club Regent Casino Hotel by Canad Inn, give Marilyn a call right away (204-326-4939). I will plan for one trip only at this time and only consider both weeks if there is a lot of interest shown. As in the past, I will need commitments early. The dates I have tentatively booked are: Week 1 – Tuesday, Aug 2nd/Wednesday, August 3rd
Week 2 – Tuesday, Aug 9th /Wednesday, Aug 10th
For those not familiar with the trip I am adding a sample of what the trip is like Day one - Casino bus pickup at Steinbach @ 8:30 am - Ste Anne @ 8:40 - Paradise Village @ 9:00 am - Arrive @ McPhillips Street Station in the morning @ 10:00 am - arrive at Club Regent 2:30 pm and book in at the Canad Inn - Early evening - arrive at 1st pavilion for an appetizer, drink and show - After the show, bus will take us to second pavilion for dinner, drink and the show there - Finally, our bus will take us to a third pavilion for dessert, drink and their performance - When the evening is over, our bus will take us back to Canad Inn at Club Regent for our overnight stay. Your time is your own to do as you please until check out time the following day. Day two -enjoy Club Regent (or do whatever you wish) before leaving for the trip home at 2:00 pm * Pavilions will be the choice of organizers (because of timing). Early commitment insures better pavilion choice * Cost includes bus, usual Casino Bus benefits of giveaways, bingo, etc. (not the $10.00 given on the free monthly trips), pavilion entrance fees, food and drink at the pavilions, shows and overnight stay. ALL THIS FOR ONLY $100.00 per person. (based on double occupancy) Singles are welcome too but there is an additional charge of $50.00 for hotel room, unless you are sharing with someone * This fantastic deal is only available through our casino bus and overnight stay is mandatory. Offer is open to all, you do not need to live in Paradise Village so let your friends know too (must be over 18).

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Wishing you a very happy, healthy, and blessed new year! We often associate the beginning of a new year with those “New Year’s Resolutions!” I don’t know about you, but with me they usually last a maximum of two weeks (most less!) Except for one resolution which can last all year and hopefully forever: a resolve to “draw closer to God in 2016...and beyond…” How can we really see this take place? Simple! Realize that: “God is as near to you as your whispered prayer!” He is just waiting (and yearning) for you and I to come to him! In the Bible, the book of James (4:8a) promises: “Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you.” What a wonderful way to start this new year - walking with God! May 2016 be your best year yet!!!!
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall.
MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of you Village Church.

2015 Christmas Basket Report With the mild weather this year we had to remind ourselves that Christmas was coming. The Richer Friends Who Care and The Paradise Village Fellowship Christian Church Group Committee co-ordinated the annual Christmas Baskets Drive for Richer and the rural area. It is heartwarming to see the continued support in our community. We are very pleased to report that on Sunday, December 13th, Distribution Day for the Christmas Baskets, was a huge success again this year! With the help of volunteers and your generosity, we were able to distribute baskets to 15 families. A total of 18 children received fuzzy PJ’s and socks to keep them warm during the holiday season. We wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the PVRA Committee and Residents, the RM of Ste. Anne, Doreen Pchajek (our local Bingo Organizer) and the Businesses and Individuals for their monetary donations. We thank the Richer School, the Richer Fellowship Church and all the individuals for their non perishable food drive, Dr. Hein, Dental Office who provided hygiene packs for the children and to The Paradise Village Christian Committee for their bake sale fundraiser. Without the volunteers none of this would be possible. We would like to thank the following people for sharing their time and talent. Special thanks goes out to Anne Praymayer for knitting toques and mitts for the Richer School Children, and to Mary Kehler for the beautifully knitted toques and scarves for gifts in the baskets. Santa’s helpers are co-chair Heather Burnell, George and Rachelle Laurin, Susan McEwen, Pauline Fontaine, Lauraine Saindon, Terri McKerchar, Jennifer Gobeil and her two daughters Jeannine and Justine Gobeil. Santas’s helpers shared a beautiful lunch together with Pastor Stan and Mary Kehler. Our sincere thanks to all. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Florida Calling: Even though we sunshine kids are blessed with blue skies for golf, and sultry outdoor pool weather we're still missing our close community in PV. There's really no place like home folks. Meanwhile, we're definitely feeling the pinch of the sinking Canadian currency...but the good news is the continuing lowering of gas and food prices...especially mouth watering juicy strawberries. We sailed again to Cozumel and shopped for bargains as usual like dark rum and light summer clothes...our 12th fun-filled cruise together. Florida is such a lush paradise with so many free activities for seniors, smooth as glass pothole free highways, and new friends everywhere. Time to go and mix another tall rum and coke. See y'all next time. Our best wishes to all in 2016 from Ila and Brian Cooper.

A Brief History of Playing Cards Did you know that at one time, the king of hearts represented Charlemagne, the king of Diamonds was Julius Caesar, the king of clubs was Alexander the Great and the king of spades was King David from the Bible? These fascinating identities, along with special designations for the other court cards, were bestowed by the French who were instrumental in bringing the pleasures of card play to people in Europe and the New World. The earliest playing cards are believed to have originated in Central Asia. The documented history of card playing began in the 10th century, when the Chinese began using paper dominoes by shuffling and dealing them in new games. Four-suited decks with court cards evolved in the Moslem world and were imported by Europeans before 1370. In those days, cards were hand-painted and only the very wealthy could afford them, but with the invention of woodcuts in the 14th century, Europeans began massproduction. It is from French designs that the cards we use today are derived. France gave us the suits of spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts, and the use of simple shapes and flat colors helped facilitate manufacture. French cards soon flooded the market and were exported in all directions. They became the standard in England first, and then in the British Colonies of America. Americans began making their own cards around 1800. Yankee ingenuity soon invented or adopted practical refinements: doubleheaded court cards (to avoid the nuisance of turning the figure upright), varnished surfaces (for durability and smoothness in shuffling), indexes (the identifying marks placed in the cards’ borders or corners), and rounded corners (which avoid the wear that card players inflict on square corners). Americans also invented the Joker. It originated around 1870 and was inscribed as the "Best Bower," the highest card in the game of Euchre. Since the game was sometimes called "Juker," it is thought that the Best Bower card might have been referred to as the "Juker card" which eventually evolved into "Joker." By the 1880s, certainly, the card had come to depict a jocular imp, jester or clown. Many other images were also used, especially as Jokers became vehicles for social satire and commercial advertising. Similarly, the backs of cards were used to promote ideas, products and services, and to depict famous landmarks, events — and even fads. During this same period, cycling — on unicycles, bicycles, and tricycles — was taking the country by storm. It was also in the latter part of the decade that Russell & Morgan, the forerunners of the The International Playing Card Company, Ltd., decided to produce a line of cards of the highest quality. Employees were asked to suggest an attractive name for the new product, and a printer, "Gus" Berens, offered "Bicycle." His idea was enthusiastically accepted, and the Rider Back made its debut in 1887. Since then, while the Bicycle brand has featured dozens of different designs, the Rider Back has never gone out of production. Today, people all over the world are familiar with the traditional red or blue back showing cupid astride a two-wheeler. The brand has become synonymous with quality and is still "the world’s favorite playing card." 31

Depression Disease State Management Depression and anxiety are common in older adults. Depression is characterized by a loss of interest or pleasure in life activities or by a depressed mood. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder in older adults and is characterized by excessive and persistent worrying that is hard to control. Overlapping symptoms include irritability and physical symptoms such as increased fatigue and muscular tension. Anxiety and depression affect both men and women, with women twice as likely to be affected. Additionally, both occur at a much higher rate in patients with chronic illness or multiple co-morbidities. Antidepressants and benzodiazepines are used to treat these diseases in older adults, but these drugs have unique features that require important consideration in older adults. 1. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) are first-line therapy. These medications are all available in generic form, are well tolerated in older adults, and have similar efficacy to all other antidepressants. It is important to start these at the lowest available dose to minimize side effects that occur more frequently in older adults. A patient's co-morbidities may affect the initial choice of antidepressant therapy. Using one drug to treat multiple conditions can help reduce the number of medications prescribed, which is especially important in older adults who are often at risk for polypharmacy. 2. Older adults can be more difficult to treat. Older adults often have challenging life situations, such as the death of a loved one or multiple medical co-morbidity. Additionally, antidepressants can take much longer to work in older adults, sometimes requiring up to 4-8 weeks to start working and up to 16-20 weeks to see optimal benefit. 3. Treating depression effectively will most often require a drug change. For patients who do not respond to or tolerate a first-line SSRI, stopping initial therapy and switching to a different first-line SSRI is reasonable. Alternatively, a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), or bupropion can be utilized. For those patients who do respond to their first therapy, but do not get entirely back to normal, an antidepressant with a different mechanism of action can be added to the initial antidepressant regimen. Some patients will require further change to resolve their depression, and some patients will have unresolved depression despite multiple drug therapy changes. Similar to depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is thought to be related to a deficiency in serotonin and/or norepinephrine. 1.SSRI's are also first-line therapy for GAD. Antidepressants work by treating this underlying problem. It is especially important to start antidepressants at the lowest available dose and titrate them slowly for the treatment of GAD. Patients should be counseled that antidepressants can increase anxiety symptoms when first started, but that this should go away over a period of several weeks. 2.Benzodiazepines should be considered a bridge. Benzodiazepines work very quickly and effectively to treat the symptoms of GAD. However, these medications have serious side effects in older adults including cognitive impairment, delirium, falls, fractures, and increased risk of motor vehicle accidents. Lorazepam has an intermediate half-life, no active metabolites, and its elimination is much less affected by age, so it is a preferred agent for older adults. If a benzodiazepine is going to be used for GAD, the goal should be to use the lowest dose for the least amount of time. In a perfect scenario, a benzodiazepine would only be used until the antidepressant is working optimally.

God's Psychiatrist - on Monday, 08 July 2013 Funny portrayal of a psychiatrist analyzing some events in the Old Testament By H. Steven Moffic, MD Chapter 1. A Psychiatrist in Biblical Times In Genesis, it is described that man, and then presumably woman in a first example of matchmaking, is created in the image of God. Imagine a modern day psychiatrist time traveling back to observe this creation. If you don’t believe in such a God, but are a parent, think of a child created, at least half genetically speaking, in your image. As holy as it may seem to be created in the image of a God, would a psychiatrist think that this was mentally healthy? What happens to the children of parents who want their children to fulfill their own dreams? Could it be too much of a narcissistic wish and expectation to be created in anyone’s image? Wouldn’t this make normal separation and individuation more difficult, the psychiatrist wondered? Indeed, the psychological challenges and problems for Adam and Eve emerge quickly in the Garden of Eden. The psychiatrist observing this scenario wondered about offering a walk, as Freud did about a century ago with Mahler, to discuss the temptation and symbolic meaning of the Serpent and the Tree of Knowledge. But the psychiatrist wondered if this was an impossible paradox to resolve. Without knowledge, how does one understand the risks of obtaining knowledge? So Eve goes ahead, and she and Adam are banished from the Garden in shame. If our psychiatrist could have met them in this wider world, perhaps they could have processed their shame and the current status of their relationship before they had children. Instead, the result is 2 sons, Cain and Abel, who portray the first sibling conflict and competition, so severe that Cain murders Abel. After this tragedy, history seems to progress adversely until Noah. Noah is said to be the best of his time. In the Ark that he builds, his family, animals, and himself survive drastic environmental and climate changes. If a psychiatrist were also on the Ark, there would have been ample time to discuss how Noah felt about the responsibility of saving the world, and how he might prepare himself for a different future. As it turns out, he becomes drunk afterward. Noah might have needed detox and Alcoholic Anonymous; his family might have sought support from Al-Anon. However, just like the lives of so many modern day celebrities, their lives and the story goes on without completing treatment. The next major figure is Abraham. No one claims to know, not even himself, why he is chosen to start a new religion. Later on in his life, sibling rivalry emerges again, but now between stepbrothers. After Abraham has his son Ishmael by the handmaiden, Hagar, Abraham and his wife Sarah have their own son, Isaac. Can’t you just predict the need for some challenging family therapy? Instead, Sarah, with the apparent approval and support of God, orders Ishmael to be banished. Abraham acquiesces, and God, to seemingly even things out a bit, says that Ishmael will start his own Kingdom, which many have taken to become the Arab people. Abraham is later asked to sacrifice Isaac. Any psychiatrist might say that at times of exasperation, a parent might think of sacrificing their child. But this time it includes the actual preparation, without the apparent knowledge, of Sarah. Isaac is spared at the last minute, but to a psychiatrist, it might seem that he suffered PTSD. Sarah may have died soon afterward from the shock of grief. (Continue to next page) 37

Continued from the previous page
Without treatment, as family problems are wont to do, the sibling conflicts continue in Isaac’s sons, Esau and Jacob, and then again in Jacob’s sons. Esau also goes off in exile, perhaps to start what will become the Roman people. This story should be enough to call forth a psychiatrist, shouldn’t it? Finally, do we see the prototype of God’s psychiatrist in Jacob’s son, Joseph? Though Jacob’s favoritism, culminating in his giving Joseph the coat of many colors, seems to produce excessive narcissism, Joseph overcomes the trauma of being sold by his brothers and given jail time in Egypt, to use his prophetic interpretation of dreams. He attributes this skill to God, succeeding beyond anyone’s wildest dreams in a new culture, in which he prepares successfully for climate change, forgives his brothers, and is united with his father. After this family forgiveness, the cycle is broken and there is just “normal” sibling rivalry depicted in the Old Testament. With the psychological path cleared in one way, but challenging in another, Moses arrives. A psychiatrist in the court might wonder if his stuttering was a consequence of an unusual child rearing, both in the Egyptian court, where he is adopted, and with the surreptitious involvement of his own family. Maybe he was dealing with buried anger, too. Moses, despite being so humble, has several outbursts of anger, which cost his entry into the Promised Land. Would anger management and/or a prn calming medication have helped him? If he were calmer, perhaps he would have recommended group psychotherapy for those disgruntled among his people, and maybe then sought psychoanalysis for himself. Following the death of Moses, the Old Testament ends. Chapter 2. Psychiatry in the Common Era Let’s go on to the Rabbis who replaced Jewish priests in the diaspora outside of Israel after the beginning of the Common Era. They seemed to grasp some therapeutic principles that would help sustain the Jewish people and keep them together over the next 2 millennia, despite pogroms, exiles, and most recently, the Holocaust. They came to interpret the Old Testament in different ways and on many levels, including the Talmud, Midrash, Kabalah, weekly Torah study around the world, and pastoral counseling. In the early Middle Ages, one particular Rabbi—Maimonides— who was a general physician and philosopher all in one, conveyed basic concepts of mental well-being, supportive psychotherapy, and even the basis of our most popular and evidence-based therapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. Nevertheless, there was still no formal field of psychiatry, that is, until a Jewish physician emerged about a century ago to complement the work of Kraepelin. Sigmund Freud, after a childhood as an honor student in Jewish religious schools, went on to take the new field of psychiatry to a different level with his psychoanalytic theories. Like Joseph, Freud arrived at his conclusions after analyzing his own dreams. The difference is that Freud analyzed the conflictual issues in his dreams, and Joseph analyzed their prophetic meanings. In the ensuing therapeutic process, different levels of interpretation paralleled the Rabbis’ interpretation of the teachings in the Torah. Was Freud God’s psychiatrist at long last? Not likely. Actually, Freud’s views may reflect why a psychiatrist was not around from the beginning of humanity in Biblical times. Freud, though publicly valuing his Jewish cultural background and involved with B’nai B’rith meetings in Vienna, was famous (or infamous) for claiming that religion was an illusion, an opium for the masses, and that belief in God was a matter of the transference of feelings toward one’s parents. Freud also seems to underestimate anti-Semitism, which labeled psychoanalysis as that “Jewish science,” only leaving his home at the last minute when his daughter’s life was threatened. Since Jewish theology values action over thoughts and beliefs, Freud’s actions—to find new ways to heal people—couldn’t be more Jewish. What did it mean, then, that Freud died on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, in 1939? And if he was thinking of his death in the physicianassisted morphine mental state, did he reassess his feelings about God? What about that other famous psychiatrist from Vienna, who studied some with Freud? That was Viktor Frankl. In one of life’s ironies, he lived for a time in close proximity to Hitler. What if he, or another psychiatrist, had at one point been able to treat Hitler during his troubled childhood? As it turned out, however, Dr Frankl was about to go to America, only to have an existential crisis: Should I foster my brainchild, logotherapy . . . or should I concentrate on my duties as a real child of my parents and stay by them? 38
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS He returned home to find the letters of the Ten Commandments stating to honor thy father and mother. He let his Visa lapse. Sent not long after to Auschwitz, he became a sort of concentration camp psychiatrist, struggling to give meaning to the struggle to survive. That meaning was to see his wife again and to lecture about the psychological lessens learned. Only the latter came to pass. After the war, he resettled in Vienna and remarried a Christian woman. He soon published the perennial best seller, Man’s Search for Meaning, and established Logotherapy, a “therapy of meaning.” Although I was trained in Freudian psychotherapy in the early 1970s, by the end of my clinical career, I came to follow the path of Freud to Frankl by focusing on the meaning of life for the decreasing amount of time I had with each patient. Did Dr Frankl end up believing in a God? He never would say. In our time, it seems that the number of psychiatrists who believe in a God are increasing, parallel with the decreasing influence of Freud’s ideas. Jewish psychiatrists, although still prominent in the newer areas of group psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, understanding brainwashing, and even Freud’s predicted psychopharmacology, are nevertheless decreasing in their relative numbers. Perhaps the notable example of a Jewish psychiatrist who clearly and overtly believes in God is Dr. Abraham Joshua Twerski, who is also a Rabbi and scion of a Hasidic dynasty, and specializes in substance abuse. For a comparable Christian psychiatrist, we can cite the late Dr. E. Mansell Pattison, who was also a minister. Chapter 3. The Moral of the Story What, then, is the moral of this tale, as Hannah, my grandchild of 2 Rabbis, would ask? Just in time, a valued teacher and colleague asked, “Isn’t God a Psychiatrist”? If God is a psychiatrist and we psychiatrists were also created in God’s image, and if we psychiatrists have come currently to view religion and psychiatry as more overlapping than conflictual, then together we can work to help and maybe even improve human nature. Amen.
