JULY 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil Congratulations to the newly elected PVRA Executive. Let’s, all together, make this next two years a wonderful collaboration filled with openness, understanding, and respect for each other and management. Let’s all strive towards positive attitudes and happy days in Paradise Village. Henry Ford said:
I was honoured to be voted in as your “New President” for the next two year term. I will do my best to uphold your confidence in me as well as that of your new First Vice-President, Barry Davenport, and your new Second Vice-President Gordon Macpherson. I believe that the PVRA has a strong and determined voice enabling us, as a group, to hopefully establish a regular “line of communication” with the Management of the Village. I would be remiss in not mentioning our new Treasurer, Cheryl Porte, the new Membership Chairpersons, Paulette Barley and Joanne Kehler who will share this position. The remainder of the team, Sherran Ross, Rose McDonald, Debbie Kokil and Peter Elwick, who remain in their current posts, and Joanne Kehler who will remain as our secretary. I feel that regular communication between us is one way to keep our residents current in the affairs of the Village. In addition, it will keep Management up to date on any concerns we may have as a group. Management has indicated an interest in having a meeting in early July. Hopefully, it will be the first of many. My goal, as your new President, is to have three meetings per year (Executives of the PVRA and Management). Enough said for now. Enjoy your summer. Ludwick Jarco, President, PVRA

The Next PVRA Social Committee Meeting is on Wednesday July 6th @ 11:30 AM at the Recreation Center It has come to my attention that most Residents do not wear their name tags. A few years ago, most folks wore their name tags nearly every time that they were in the hall which made it easier to become acquainted. We feel that it helps bring about an enhanced spirit of camaraderie if you can address people by their name. So please folks let’s wear our name tags again and get to know each other better. Alice Letkeman - 45 Village Drive - moved to Paradise Village from Winnipeg on May 1, 2016. Alice is not completely moved in yet as possession of her home in Winnipeg isn't until July 1, so at the present time she is between both places. Alice has worked for MPI, in different positions for the past 34 years. When she retired, Alice told me she wanted a change from the hustle and bustle of the city and because she loves the outdoors and gardening, chose to live in Paradise Village instead of an apartment. She made a wise choice in my opinion. By living here, she is closer to family living in Steinbach and area and feels this is a perfect spot. Alice finds it relaxing, affordable and has a very friendly atmosphere. Alice and I went over all the activities offered here and suggested that she attend some of them as this is a good place to meet other residents. Her interests include cycling, walking working out in the gym and of course gardening. Again I would like to welcome you to Paradise Village and enjoy everything that is offered here.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS Mosquitoes are nasty, irritating insects whose presence can easily ruin an otherwise perfect time. The way they buzz and swarm all around, waiting to land on some warm body to bite, is enough to drive anyone insane. The worst part about the pesky blood suckers are the diseases they carry, which they transmit straight into your body and bloodstream when they bite. Every year worldwide almost 700 million people end up contracting a mosquito borne illness resulting in over a million deaths. That number keeps growing and the scary fact is what makes them the #1 killer of humans. The current ongoing public health crisis surrounding the Zika Virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, is causing all sorts of health issues. It’s only the latest international health threat that’s related directly to mosquito bites and it’s in good company. Many diseases are spread mainly or exclusively by mosquitoes including malaria, dengue, encephalitis, West Nile virus, and more. While it’s best to avoid the flying terrors all together, that’s basically impossible because if they want to bite you they will, or die trying. One way to lessen the amount of bites is knowing what attracts skeeters in the first place. Basically, it depends on how you smell and since mosquitoes have excellent scent receptors in their antennae, they can smell any human within 100 feet easily. Unfortunately, it also comes down to genetics and 85% of the reason why mosquitoes prefer some people over others is due to their genetic makeup. Here are some of the main factors that make someone a mosquito bite magnet: 1) Exercise and Lactic Acid Production - The sweatier and smellier a person in the more attractive they are to a mosquito. Individuals who produce more lactic acid, which is emitted from our bodies via sweat glands, will draw in more of the pests to their general vicinity. Also, the more perspiration and the older it is, the greater the buildup of lactic acid, meaning your a tasty meal. Research has proven that fresh sweat isn’t as attractive to a mosquito as day old sweat appears to be, so taking a shower after working hard or exercising can make a huge difference on how many bites you’ll end up getting. 2) Bacteria - Our skin is literally crawling with bacteria and it’s estimated that the average human has about one trillion or so bacteria on their body. The types of bacteria living on our skin can vary greatly from person to person and some varieties affect how much an individual gets bit by mosquitoes. For example, it has been found that if someone has Staphylococcus and Variovorax present on their skin, they’ll likely suffer more mosquito problems. The opposite is also true, other types of bacteria act to make our skin less attractive to mosquitoes. A few of those types of bacteria include Pseudomonas, Delftia, and Actinobacteria. You definitely want those crawling on your body! 3) Blood Type - The type of blood you have coursing through your veins factors greatly into the risk of whether or not you’ll end up suffering from more bites than others. Studies have found that people with Type O blood are bitten most often, followed by Type B, then Type A. In fact, Type O’s are so appealing to mosquitoes that they’re twice as likely to suffer bites than Type A. In addition, if you happen to be among the estimated 85% of people who emit a certain chemical that gives away your blood type through your skin then mosquitoes will bite you long before they bite those who lack that chemical. It’s as if the pesky insects like to know exactly what type of blood they’ll be sucking, eek! 4) Carbon Dioxide - Even just breathing is enough to attract mosquitoes because they are drawn to the CO2 you exhale. Individuals who produce more CO2 get bit more frequently, thus pregnant women and heavy-set people who tend to breathe heavier need to take extra precautions to keep from getting bit. Another factor in relation to carbon monoxide is that beer drinkers have been found to get bit more frequently because they too breathe more heavily when under the influence of a few beers. While people commonly use bug zappers, horrible smelling chemical repellents, and mosquito nets to try and combat the pests, they’re mostly ineffective or plain gross. Fortunately, there’s an easy and highly effective way to keep your surroundings mosquito-free. Make a trap to catch the suckers using old soda bottles. It takes just a few seconds and you can make a bunch of them for less than a couple of bucks. *Take a 2 liter soda bottle and carefully cut a third of the top part off it with a serrated knife. Place ¼ cup of brown sugar, 1 cup warm water, and ¼ teaspoon of yeast in the bottom two thirds portion of the cut soda bottle. Place the top of the soda bottle upside down into the bottom half of the bottle and make sure the cap is off and that it fits tight and snug all around the sides. Place the soda bottle trap outside near wherever you plan on sitting and let it do its magic. Mosquitoes will be attracted to the brown sugar and yeast mixture and won’t be able to resist the sweet, sticky aroma it puts off. When they fly down inside the bottle they become trapped and can’t escape, leaving you with a comfortable, relaxing, mosquito-free atmosphere to enjoy and kick back in.

Paradise Village Singles - June
PARADISE VILLAGE
It was one of those perfect June days when we met at Ursula and Steve's lovely home on Harmony Lane. Folks enjoyed being out on the deck admiring the garden with its many plants already advanced in growth. A couple of Green Thumbs there for certain! A fabulous feast was served with the usual great variety. Of course the monthly birthdays were celebrated with chocolate cake for all. The celebrants were Victor and Joy. We missed Debbie and Olga who were unable to attend. Happy Birthday ladies! Carol Stoess noted that our singles group has been asked to host a brunch in September, a show of hands agreed to support this event. More information on this to follow. The next Pot Luck will be held July 4th, 5 pm at the home of Steve Bloomer 57 Village Drive Please call 204 422 5815 if you plan to attend All Paradise singles most welcome. Just bring an item of food to share and plan to have an enjoyable evening.

JULY 2016 Two little old ladies, Connie and Evelyn, were sitting on a park bench outside the local town hall where a flower show was in progress. The short one, Connie, leaned over and said, "Life is so boring. We never have any fun anymore. For $10 I'd take my clothes off and streak through that stupid, boring flower show"! "You're on!", said Evelyn, holding up a $10 bill. So, Connie slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes. She grabbed a dried flower from a nearby display and held it between her teeth. Then, completely naked, she streaked (as fast as an old lady can) through the front door of the flower show. Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by loud applause and shrill whistling. Finally, the smiling Connie came through the exit door surrounded by a cheering, clapping crowd. "What happened"? asked Evelyn. "I won $1,000 as 1st prize for 'Best Dried Arrangement'!"
Something wrong? I’m sure I buried my bone here.
Thank you... Sunday, June 12th we had a tree come down in our yard which caused no damage to our house. Many thanks to Jacob Hes (chainsaw), Terry Serediuk, Ed Rempel & Jim L’Esperance for helping clean up the downed tree. 16

JULY 2016 Never mess with the elderly!...... An elderly couple return to a Mercedes dealership where the salesman has just sold the car they were interested in to a beautiful, leggy, busty blonde. "I thought you said you would hold that car till we raised the $75,000 asking price," said the man. "Yet I just heard you closed the deal for $65,000 to that lovely young lady there. You insisted there could be no discount on this model." "Well, what can I tell you? She had the ready cash and, just look at her, how could I resist?" replied the grinning salesman. Just then the young woman approached the aged couple and gave them the keys."There you go," she said. "I told you I would get the dope to reduce it. See you later, grandpa.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church The Bible calls God, the “God of all comfort” (II Corinthians 1:3) and continues in verse 4: “who comforts us in all our troubles” “Comfort”: what a wonderfully descriptive word! Here are some of it’s many implications: -
to console when in grief and sorrow to relieve and remove pain and trouble when in distress and affliction to calm anxiety, bringing peace and contentment to encourage and bring reassurance when despondent or discouraged to physically heal, restore joy and strength
Praise God! He can do all these things and so much more in our lives - time and again! Why would God do that for you and I? Just because He loves us so! Ask Him!
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.

A mosquito-transmitted virus causes most cases of West Nile infection. Most people infected with West Nile virus either don't develop signs or symptoms or have only minor ones, such as fever and mild headache. However, some people develop a life-threatening illness that includes inflammation of the spinal cord or brain. Mild signs and symptoms of a West Nile virus infection generally go away on their own. But severe signs and symptoms — such as a severe headache, fever, disorientation or sudden weakness — require immediate attention. Exposure to mosquitoes where West Nile virus exists increases your risk of getting infected. Protect yourself from mosquitoes by using mosquito repellent and wearing clothing that covers your skin to reduce your risk. Symptoms: Most people infected with the West Nile virus have no signs or symptoms. Mild infection signs and symptoms. About 20 percent of people develop a mild infection called West Nile fever. Common signs and symptoms include: Fever, Headache, Body aches, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Fatigue, Skin rash Serious infection signs and symptoms: In less than 1 percent of infected people, the virus causes a serious neurological infection, including inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis). Signs and symptoms of neurological infections include: High fever, Severe headache, Stiff neck, Disorientation or confusion, Stupor or coma, Tremors or muscle jerking, Seizures, Partial paralysis or muscle weakness. Signs and symptoms of West Nile fever usually last a few days, but signs and symptoms of encephalitis or meningitis can linger for weeks or months. Certain neurological effects, such as muscle weakness, can be permanent. When to see a doctor: Mild symptoms of West Nile fever usually resolve on their own. For signs or symptoms of serious infection, such as severe headaches, a stiff neck, disorientation or confusion, seek medical attention right away. A serious infection generally requires hospitalization. Typically, West Nile virus spreads to humans and animals via infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. You can't get infected from casual contact with an infected person or animal. Most West Nile virus infections occur during warm weather, when mosquitoes are active. The incubation period — the period between when you're bitten by an infected mosquito and the appearance of signs and symptoms of the illness — ranges from two to 14 days. West Nile virus has occurred in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. It appeared in the United States in the summer of 1999, and since then has been reported in every state except Hawaii and Alaska, as well as in Canada. In a few cases, West Nile virus might have spread through other routes, including organ transplantation and blood transfusion. However, blood donors are screened for the virus, substantially reducing the risk of infection from blood transfusions. There also have been reports of possible transmission of the virus from mother to child during pregnancy or breast-feeding or exposure to the virus in a lab, but these are rare and not conclusively confirmed. 36
PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Risk factors: Most cases of West Nile virus in the United States occur June through September. Cases have been reported in all 48 lower states. Risk of serious infection: Even if you're infected, your risk of developing a serious West Nile virus-related illness is extremely small — less than 1 percent of people who are infected become severely ill. And most people who do become sick recover fully. You're more likely to develop a severe or fatal infection based on:
Age. Being older puts you at higher risk.
Certain medical conditions. Certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease, increase your risk. So does receiving an organ transplant. Most people recover from West Nile virus without treatment. Most severe cases require supportive therapy in a hospital with intravenous fluids and pain medication. For mild cases, over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease mild headaches and muscle aches. Use caution when giving aspirin to children or teenagers. Children and teenagers recovering from chickenpox or flu-like symptoms should never take aspirin. This is because aspirin has been linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition, in such children. Prevention: Your best bet for preventing West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses is to avoid exposure to mosquitoes and eliminate standing water, where mosquitoes breed.
Unclog roof gutters.
Empty unused swimming pools or empty standing water on pool covers.
Change water in birdbaths and pet bowls regularly.
Remove old tires or unused containers that might hold water and serve as a breeding place for mosquitoes.
Install or repair screens on windows and doors.
To reduce your exposure to mosquitoes:
Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most prevalent, such as at dawn, dusk and early evening.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors.
Apply mosquito repellent containing an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent to your skin and clothing. Choose the concentration based on the hours of protection you need — the higher the percentage (concentration) of the active ingredient, the longer the repellent will work. Follow the directions on the package, paying special attention to recommendations for use on children. When outside, cover your infant's stroller or playpen with mosquito netting.

Volunteer Drivers There are residents in Paradise Village who may need assistance to get to a medical appointment in Ste. Anne, Lorette, Steinbach or Winnipeg. Arrangements as to times and donations towards gas and/or parking are between the resident requiring assistance and the resident driver. If you require assistance, you may call a driver directly: Because drivers are not always available, we need to increase the number of volunteers. If you are able to do this please let Debbie (Editor) know by calling 204-422-8714 so that your name and phone number can be placed on the list below.
