PVRA Newsletter June 2016

Page 1

JUNE 2016 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil Happy June everyone! I for one am glad the warm weather is here, the birds are singing and the trees are overflowing with green leaves and blossoms. I spend as much time outside as I can because I love the warmth of the sun and working in the garden and our little forest. I learned the hard way last year about Poison Ivy and I vow this year not to get it. The bugs, well, they are a part of our summer whether we like them or not. Here’s hoping there is not too much rain so that the mosquito population is less than usual. I wish everyone a happy, warm, comfortable summer in 2016. See you at the Canada Day Celebration!

JUNE 2016 Attention Paradise Residents This letter was sent to the PVRA Executive by a potential buyer of one of our homes here in the Village. This letter strongly states that the condition of our roads stopped this individual from making a purchase & moving here. This letter reinforces our cause to continue to pursue action from Paradise Village Management to respect and honour our lease agreement which states roads and Village property will be maintained. We do not want a hole fixed here or there. We want roads and drainage fixed professionally. The condition of our roads, as they are now, devalue our properties! How many more potential home buyers have come and gone for the very same reason? PVRA Executive

The Paradise Village Residents’ Association General Meeting will be held on June 7th, 2016 @ 7:00 pm. You will have received the minutes of the last meeting in April with your June newsletter so please take the time to read them over before you attend the meeting. 

We will hear from Randy Eros, our local RM of Ste. Anne Counsellor.

A representative from Energy East Corporation will speak about the south pipeline and he will be available at 6:00 pm for anyone who wishes to speak to him personally prior to the meeting.

An election will take place for vacancies in the Executive and your votes are necessary. Please contact Sherran Ross 204-422-5674 if you are interested in running for one of the vacancies.

Thank you to all residents who filled out the RTB forms and returned them in May. Hope to see many of you there. Your PVRA Executive. 10

JUNE 2016

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Richard & Linda Miller - 21 Paradise Drive - moved to our beautiful Paradise Village on April 24, 2016 from Winnipeg, They have moved into a completely renovated home, it is very attractive and Rick and Linda are very happy. They have a bit of yard work to do and then can enjoy their new home and also their cottage. They find the community very friendly, very pleasant and above all an affordable place to live in. I outlined to them all the activities that are offered here and that they should partake as that is a good way to meet some of the other residents. Linda does carving, knitting, sewing, and showed me some of the pictures she has painted-beautiful. Some people are so talented and Linda does not lack in that department, that's for sure. Rick likes to do all the man things like fishing, hunting, and shooting pool. They have 3 children, two of them living in Winnipeg and the third one in Oakbank. You can tell they are a very close family. They have been blessed with 8 grandchildren whom they spend a lot of time with. Rick and Linda, thank you so much for the most enjoyable visit. Again welcome to Paradise Village and hope to see you at some of our functions. Our meetings are held every second month, we also have potluck dinners and breakfasts where you can meet new friends. Dianne Settee - 20 Sunset Drive - moved from Richer on May 2, 2016. Dianne had a small acreage and found that there was just too much grass to cut and took up too much of her energy to look after her place. Her daughter and son-in-law started looking at places and when they checked out Paradise Village, Dianne liked what she saw and the rest is now history. Discussed all the functions and activities that take place in the Park and hopefully she will participate in some in the near future. Her hobbies include doing puzzles, bird watching and gardening. She also loves plants as her home is filled with different kinds of plants. She is now retired but she was a waitress in her working days. Dianne has 5 children, 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Again I would like to welcome you to our beautiful, peaceful and friendly Village. You will enjoy it stay here and l look forward to seeing you at our next General Meeting and other functions that will be coming up in the very near future. Robert Grancich & Tracie Loxton - 08 Lakeview Drive - moved to Paradise Village from Winnipeg on May 14, 2016. Robert and Tracie have done a few renos and have turned their modular home into a beautiful residence. They are both still working. Tracie is a self-employed Massage Therapist, while Robert is a car dealer implementation specialist/trainer. They are both very familiar with Paradise Village as Tracie's father and her sister and brother-in-law live here. Tracie loves reading, cycling, walking, and singing. Robert also likes cycling and walking but his big interest is a car enthusiast. We went over all the activities offered here and in time sure they will come out and participate. Welcome to Paradise Village Robert & Tracie. George & Gay Lemay - 06 Lakeview Drive - moved to Paradise Village from Falcon Lake on May 20, 2016. When I asked them why they chose Paradise Village to relocate to they said they already knew some people living here who loved it. George and Gay said it was like living at the lake - peaceful, friendly, affordable and they loved hearing the birds singing. Gay loves gardening so still has a little yard to work in. Gay's other interests include sewing, reading and doing crafts. George loves to putter around outside and in his garage. He also swims, reads and hopefully can find enough interested people in the park to start up bocce. During our visit I was surprised to hear that he worked for a few years in my home town - The Pas and even more surprised to hear that he knew my brother quite well. What a small world!!!They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren whom they are very proud of. We also talked about all the activities that are offered at the Rec. Centre and encouraged them to take part as these functions are a good place to meet other residents. I reminded them to make sure they attend the General Meeting which is on June 7th. Welcome to Paradise Village, George and Gay, and I'm sure you'll be happy to know that you made the right choice. Garry & Silvia Steinhilber - 26 Nature Drive - moved from Gonor, Manitoba. They took possession last year but only sold their home recently so will be moving in on June 1, 2016. They have been busy doing a few small renos and painting before they actually move in. During our conversation, Garry and Silvia told me that they had been looking for the past 3 years for a community type of retirement place and Paradise Village fit the bill. They said they had even looked in other provinces and found nothing like our beautiful Paradise Village for things to do, the privacy, affordability and friendliness. I cannot describe to you how I felt when I heard all these positive comments. Thank you Garry and Silvia. They owned a small fabricating company in Winnipeg and Silvia said you wouldn't believe all the bingo chips we made. Silvia's interest includes travelling, gardening, and dogs, while Garry, besides travelling, loves fishing and golfing. They have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. After settling in, we hope to see you at some of the functions and activities we talked about and although you already have some friends living here, this will give you a chance to meet more of the residents. A very warm welcome to you, Garry and Silvia. 12

Paradise Village Singles - May

PARADISE VILLAGE

What a beautiful evening we had for our singles party on May 2, 2016. There was 25 of us and we enjoyed ourselves out on the deck and in the sunroom with lots of laughter and socializing. There was four birthdays in May: Les, Steven, Toney, and Darlene! Our meal as usual was delicious (I did miss your potatoes Olga) and we did a good job cleaning it all up too. I hosted it but the rest did the serving and cleaned up….my excuse is I like socialize too much….and even with a house full of people after they left, I had little left to do. Thanks guys!

I really enjoyed writing the news for the singles but someone else can do it (even if for just the summer) as l can't attend too often in the summer. Thanks Myrna The next potluck is at Stephen and Ursula’s 15 Harmony Lane on June 6th at 5:00 pm. Please RSVP. 204-422-4032 15

$5 ROUND TRIP SHUTTLE AVAILABLE WEEKDAYS

A POEM TO WHICH I CAN RELATE‌.. Author Unknown I remember the bologna of my Childhood, and the bread that we cut with a knife, When the Children helped with the housework, and the men went to work not the wife. The cheese never needed a fridge, and the bread was so crusty and hot, The Children were seldom unhappy, and the Wife was content with her lot. I remember the milk from the bottle, with the yummy cream on the top, Our dinner came hot from the oven, and not from a freezer; or a shop. The kids were a lot more contented, they didn't need money for kicks, Just a game with their friends in the road, and sometimes the Saturday flicks. I remember the shop on the corner, where cookies for pennies were sold Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic? Or is it....I'm just getting Old? Bathing was done in a wash tub, with plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending as Mama pressed everyone's 'duds'. I remember the slap on my backside, and the taste of soap if I swore Anorexia and diets weren't heard of and we hadn't much choice what we wore. Do you think that bruised our ego? Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the table and I think life was better enjoyed. If you can remember those days......Continue to enjoy your Retirement & GOD BLESS YOU.

JUNE 2016

A farmer had won many ribbons at the fair for his prize bulls. One day he noticed one of his bulls had his eyes crossed. He phoned the vet to come over. The vet said that he could fix the problem. He got a rubber hose and stuck it up the bulls rectum. He told the farmer to go to the front of the bull. As the vet would blow into the hose and to let him know when his eyes would uncross. The bull’s eyes uncrossed immediately. The farmer hollered that’s it. For the service, the vet charged him $100. The farmer said no problem and paid the vet. Well low and behold, the morning that they were loading the bull into the truck, the bull slipped and fell in the loading chute. His eyes again crossed. The farmer told the hired man to get the hose (or rubber tube) and they would do the job themselves and save $100. He then told the hired man to watch up front as the farmer would blow. The farmer blew and blew until he was out of wind and nothing happened. He then asked the hired man to blow and he would watch to see if the bull’s eyes uncrossed. The hired man went to the rear of the bull and pulled the hose out. The farmer yelled “What are you doing?” The hired man said, “You don’t think I am going to blow on the same end as your did?” Submitted by Julian Degrave 22

For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and doing what anybody and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook. I already have four people following me: two police officers,

a private investigator and a psychiatrist.

If I ever get married‌ I want to build a box with our wedding date written on the outside. On the inside we would put two sealed love letters we wrote on why we fell in love and a bottle of wine from the year we started dating. If things ever get too hard and our love fades, we will open the box, drink the wine and read the letters we wrote to each other to remind us of how much our love means and for us to never give up.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church The cry of many in today’s society is: “Give me more knowledge!” They declare “Knowledge (information) is ‘money’, ‘power’, and ‘the way to great success’! It is said that knowledge is “doubling in our world every few days” and yet with all this increase, mankind seems little better off. Look around: wars, violence, greed, wickedness - is still everywhere! I believe what we need most of all, is much more “Wisdom”. A simple definition of wisdom is: “the right or proper use of knowledge”. The Bible presents some very deep insight concerning the acquiring of wisdom such as in the book of James (1:5 NLT): “If you need wisdom - if you want to know what God wants you to do - ask Him and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking.” The wise writers of the Proverbs and the Psalms gives us a very important truth: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” (Proverbs 9:10; Psalms 111:10) (“fear”: “a reverential respect & submission”) Another definition of “wisdom” might be:“The ability to see things from God’s perspective. This is part of God’s Holy Spirit’s work in our life (St. John 14:26) (Jn. 16:8-15 etc.) Romans 12:1-2 provides the answer for God’s “good and acceptable and perfect will of God”: give our whole self into God’s hands. He is always desiring and waiting to hear from you and I!

RETARDED GRANDPARENTS - After Christmas vacation, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One child wrote the following: We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Stayyoung Bay in Florida where everyone lives in nice little houses, and so they don't have to mow the grass anymore! They ride around on their bicycles and scooters and wear name tags because they don't know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now. They do exercises there, but they don't do them very well. There is a swimming pool too, but they all jump up and down in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in their golf carts! Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night - early birds. Some of the people can't get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck. My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out, so they can visit their grandchildren. PRICELESS! ENJOY LIFE NOW...IT HAS AN EXPIRATION DATE!

I have the opportunity to purchase this model of a BowflexÂŽ TreadClimberÂŽ TC10 formerly priced at $2400 (plus taxes and shipping) for $1500. I am asking the membership to consider this item to be added to our workout room for an extra piece of equipment that provides an effective cardio combing a treadmill, stair climber and elliptical all in one. Having more options in the workout room provides more opportunity to become healthier. I will be bringing this up at the general meeting as a motion to purchase. See you there.

Exercise May Prevent Harmful Falls in Men

Regular exercise reduces older men's risk of serious injuries from falls, a new study finds. "The physical activity program was more effective in reducing the rate of serious fall injuries in men than in women," said study author Dr. Thomas Gill, a professor of geriatrics at Yale University, in New Haven, Conn. Although the findings were mixed, they suggest that moderate exercise may help prevent serious falls, the leading cause of injury in people 70 and older, Gill said in a university news release. The study included more than 1,600 inactive women and men, aged 70 to 89, randomly assigned to either a long-term, moderate exercise regimen or to a health education program. The physical activity sessions included walking and flexibility, strength and balance training. Compared to those in the health education group, men in the workout group had a 38 percent lower risk of serious fall injuries, a 53 percent lower risk of fall-related fractures, and a 59 percent lower rate of fall injuries requiring hospitalization. The exercise program did not appear to reduce women's risk of serious fall injuries, according to the study published online Feb. 3 in the journal BMJ. The men in the exercise group boosted their physical activity levels more than the women and also had greater improvements in gait, balance, and muscle strength, the researchers said. "The results from the current study support continued evaluation of the physical activity program for possible widespread implementation in the community," Gill said.

Volunteer Drivers There are residents in Paradise Village who may need assistance to get to a medical appointment in Ste. Anne, Lorette, Steinbach or Winnipeg. Arrangements as to times and donations towards gas and/or parking are between the resident requiring assistance and the resident driver.
