PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

You just have to appreciate this one. Young people forget that we old people had a career before we retired..... Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10, 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded, a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their "Older Person Friendly" policies. One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. "Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but, your being late so often is quite bothersome." "Yes, I know boss and I am sorry, and am working on it." "Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like to hear." "Yes sir, I understand your concern, and I will try harder." Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, "I know you're retired from the United States Navy. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning late so often?" The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly then said with a grin, "They usually saluted and said, Good morning Admiral, can I get your coffee sir?

Ethel checked into a Motel on her 65th Birthday, she was lonely and a little depressed at her advancing age so decided to risk an adventure. She thought, "I'll call one of those men you see advertised in phone books for escorts and sensual massages." She looked through the phone book, found a full page ad for a guy calling himself Tender Tony, a very handsome man with assorted physical skills flexing in the photo. He had all the right muscles in all the right places, thick wavy hair, long powerful legs, dazzling smile, six pack abs and she felt quite certain she could bounce a dime off his well-oiled buns ..... She figured, what the heck, nobody will ever know. I'll give him a call. "Good evening, ma'am, how may I help you? Oh my, he sounded sooo sexy! Afraid she would lose her nerve if she hesitated, she rushed right in, "I hear you give a great massage. I'd like you to come to my motel room and give me one. No, wait, I should be straight with you. I'm in town all alone and what I really want is sex. I want it hot, and I want it now. Bring implements, toys, everything you've got in your bag of tricks. We'll go at it all night - tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything and everything, I'm ready! Now how does that sound?" He said, "That sounds absolutely fantastic, but you need to press 9 for an outside line." 7

A huge celebration was in order this month as we marked the 21st anniversary of Naomi Daignault’s 59th birthday. We all agreed that she looked much younger than 80 yrs! A Day in the Life of a Dachshund Hector is a merry dog, who likes to take a daily jog through garden small, and bushes tall, under fence, and over wall. He likes to chase the neighbour’s cat, and chew his father’s ragged cap. Her shakes his toy with doggy joy, and barks at every girl and boy. Hector loves to chew a stick, long and skinny, short or thick. Dragged through the door on kitchen floor, he chomps it into bits galore. He sleeps inside a wire pen, thinks he’s in a wild wolf’s den. He curls up tight, to dream all night of cats and sticks that he will bite. He won’t get up if it’s too cold, no matter how his humans scold. He burrows in, to our chagrin, his nest of blankets to his chin. Hector greets the morning late, drags himself to furnace grate, where the heat warms up his seat, tummy, tail and all four feet. Sirloin steak, his hope and wish, Hector sniffs and paws his dish. Kibble! Plain! He does complain. The garden calls, he’s off again. 17

"The Gift of Time" Something to think about! The Last Wishes of Alexander the Great - On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes: 1. The best doctors should carry his coffin... 2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery... 3. His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see! One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say: 1. "I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal." 2. "I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth." 3. "I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME! We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life!" The best present that you can give to your family and friends is your TIME. May you be granted with plenty of TIME, to share with All. 18

A couple has a dog that snores. Annoyed because she can't sleep, the wife goes to the vet to see if he can help. The vet tells the woman to tie a ribbon around the dog's testicles, and he will stop snoring. 'Yeah right!' she says. The wife tosses and turns, unable to sleep. Muttering to herself, she goes to the closet and grabs a piece of red ribbon and ties it carefully around the dog's testicles. Sure enough, the dog stops snoring. The woman is amazed. Later that night, her husband returns home drunk from being out drinking with his buddies. He climbs into bed, falls asleep and immediately begins snoring loudly. The woman decides maybe the ribbon might work on him. So, she goes to the closet again, grabs a piece of blue ribbon and ties it around her husband's testicles. Amazingly, it also works on him! The woman sleeps soundly. The husband wakes from his drunken stupor and stumbles into the bathroom. As he stands in front of the toilet, he glances in the mirror and sees a blue ribbon attached to his privates. He is very confused, and as he walks back into the bedroom, he sees the red ribbon attached to his dog's testicles. He shakes his head and looks at the dog and whispers, 'I don't know where we were or what we did, but, by God we took FIRST and SECOND place!

Pass the Butter This is interesting . .. . Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings.... DO YOU KNOW the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...it gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years. And now, for Margarine. Margarine is very high in trans fatty acids. It triples the risk of coronary heart disease. Increases total cholesterol. LDL (This is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL (the good cholesterol). It increases the risk of cancers up to five times. It lowers quality of breast milk. It decreases immune response as well as insulin response. The most disturbing fact... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT. These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT! 22

A Salute to Volunteers by Author Unknown

Many will be shocked to find, When the day of judgment nears, That there's a special place in Heaven, Set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners, Satin couches and footstools, Where there are no committee chairmen, No yard sales or rest area coffee to serve, No library duty or bulletin assembly. There will be nothing to print or staple, Not one thing to fold or mail, Telephone lists will be outlawed. But a finger snap will bring, Cool drinks and gourmet dinners, And rare treats fit for a king.

You ask, "Who'll serve these privileged and work for all they're worth?" Why, all those who reaped the benefits, and not once volunteered on Earth. 27

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Leonard & Dora Friesen - moved to Paradise Village from Kleefeld to their new home at 10 Village Drive on January 23, 2016. The Friesens and I had a really nice visit over a cup of coffee. When they decided to downsize, they knew one thing for sure and that was they were not moving into the city and into an apartment. Leonard could not visualize the long hallways, said it would make him think he was living in a hotel. They had heard of Paradise Village and are happy with their decision. He still has a yard to tinker in and grass to cut but a far cry from the 3 acres he had to cut in Kleefeld. Leonard and Dora are anxiously waiting for Spring to see what has to be done in their yard. I went over all the events and activities offered in the Village and Dora is especially interested in Bingo, a lady of my heart. Before retirement, Dora was a school bus driver and Leonard worked for W. S. Machinery as a machine fabricator. Besides Bingo, Dora loves to quilt and play cards. Leonard is the gardener, he makes small toys for his grandchildren and builds birdhouses. They both did a lot of camping and fishing in the past. They were blessed with 4 children and 10 grandchildren who all live nearby which also keeps them busy. We hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners, and all other activities offered here at the Village. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living here in our beautiful Paradise Village.

The Perogy and Garlic Sausage Supper on Friday, February 26th was duzhe dobre дуже добре (Very Good) Many residents and management enjoyed a wonderful meal of homemade perogies, garlic sausage, perogy casserole, coleslaw, & strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Not exactly as shown…. but pretty darn close!

The WII was connected and made available but there were not too many interested in playing. Maybe next time. Those residents remaining enjoyed quite a lively and spirited game of Whist.

Congratulations to Naomi Daignault, the 50/50 Draw Winner. Money raised will be used to purchase a new freezer. 31

A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?" The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, Norma Findlay, Room 302." The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room."After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal, and her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good News." The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?"

If you are going to be away please inform Frank or Brian or myself Debbie (Editor) with the dates. Thank you and save this information for future need!

The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit."

Sleep Disorders State Management "Sleep disorders" is a generalized term for over 70 different disorders that generally fall into the following three categories: lack of sleep (insomnia), disturbed sleep (apnea), and excessive sleep (narcolepsy). Insomnia, which is considered the most common disorder, is believed to affect over 60 million Americans. How much sleep do we really need? According to the National Sleep Foundation children and infants ages 2 months to 12 years require between 9-18 hours, adolescents require between 8.5-9.5 hours, and adults require between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Sufficient sleep is currently recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention and health maintenance. Insufficient sleep has been associated with chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Promoting regular and consistent sleep to your patients can have a significant life-long impact on their lives. Prior to recommending OTC and supplements containing antihistamines (diphenhydramine), melatonin, or valerian root it may be worth reviewing some of the following tips with your patients: 1. Try to go to bed and wake up at a consistent time each day to maintain your body’s circadian rhythm. 2. Ensure that the sleep environment is quiet, dark, and relaxing. 3. As difficult as it may be, use the bedroom for sleeping activities ONLY. Try to promote the removal of the TV, computers, and other gadgets from a person’s room of rest. 4. Avoid physical activity, food intake, and caffeine consumption prior to bedtime.

In the event that lifestyle modifications do not impact the patient’s ability to sleep or maintain sleep, OTC and prescription sleeping pills may be helpful. Although sleeping pills may allow a patient to get some much needed rest, they do not treat the underlying cause of insomnia or other sleeping disorders. Be sure to engage your patients in a dialogue about their sleeping problems and make appropriate recommendations on treatment options or referrals to physicians. SLEEP LIKE A BABY! 36

WHAT NOT TO NAME YOUR DOG

Submitted by Julian DeGrave

Everybody has a dog called Rover or Spot. I call my dog "Sex". When I went to city hall to buy a licence I told the clerk I wanted a licence for Sex. He said "I'd like one too." But then I said "This is a dog." He said he didn't care what she looked like. Then I said "You don't understand I've had Sex since I was nine years old." He said "You must have been quite a kid." When I got married and went on my honeymoon, I took the dog with me. I told the motel clerk that I wanted a room for my wife, me, and a special room for Sex. He said that every room in the place was for sex. I said "You don't understand Sex keeps me awake at night." The clerk said "Me too." One day I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was just standing there looking around. Itold him I had planned to have Sex in the contest. He told me that I should have sold my own tickets. "But you don't understand," I said. I hoped to have Sex on TV. He called me a show off. When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I said "Your Honor, I had Sex before I was married." The judge said "Me too." Then I told him that after I was married Sex left. He said "Me too." Last night Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking around town for him. A cop came over to me and asked "What are you doing in this alley at 4 o'clock in the morning?" I said I'm looking for Sex. My case comes up Friday.

MARCH 2016 Florida Calling: We love sharing our Florida vacation with village family in Paradise. Seems we just experienced a later and cooler El Nino winter...a few days of sun followed by a few days of cloud...even light warm rain that we walk in. Temps struggling to reach 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, the darker reality of our depressed Canadian dollar is really hurting us at the retail level where merchants are declining to give cash-back on many credit union debit cards until the US financial community catches up to Canada's embedded chip technology. Solution...use our credit card exclusively or have cash wired from home to our US bank account. So for every Canadian dollar we spend we're paying at least an additional 43 cents for the exchange. Whew! Nonetheless, the fun never lets up amid sight-seeing, a Royal Caribbean cruise, travels to Ste. Augustine, the oldest city in the US on the Atlantic Ocean, vintage cars shows, the Florida State Fair, excursions to the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs. It's tiring just keeping up, folks! Coming up is the 11 day Florida Strawberry Festival in early March. Many of the most outstanding American country music artists perform FREE onstage during the two week run. So...for us, it's just not time to come home yet. "Can I mix you another Strawberry Marguerita, Ila?" Hugs to all from Ila & Brian Cooper.
