The Enfant-Jésus Corporation: Spring is around the corner and we are looking forward to our Annual Spring Garage Sale Fundraiser to be held on May 27, 28 and 29th at #83 Dawson Road East. If you wish to donate items, please contact Yvonne at 204-422-9369. All proceeds will go towards the Dawson Trail Museum as we continue with the transition of the Enfant-Jésus Heritage Site into a museum and learning center as one of the first churches located along the Dawson Trail.
Modern Love Story… An elderly couple had just learned how to send text messages on their mobile phones. The wife was a romantic type and the husband was more of a no-nonsense guy. One afternoon the wife went out to meet a friend for coffee. She decided to send her husband a romantic text message and she wrote.
Our current project involves a total renovation of the existing bathroom plus building an outdoor ramp. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you in May. In its early days, the Church was frequented not only by the villagers but also by travelers and traders using Dawson Road as the Church was the last French, Catholic Church, east of Winnipeg (The Red River Settlement). Its architecture is of interest as it is a Roman-style building with its pillar foundations and basement walls made entirely of field stones and mortar. The exhibits provide a narrative of the history of the area including over 100 year history of the site itself, daily living of the people that lived in the community, and the importance of the Dawson Trail to the people that lived and traveled on it. We are open for tours from May to September long weekend.

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Gordon & Shirley Beaudin - 10 Parkview Drive - moved from Winnipeg. They moved to their beautiful home on March 23, 2016 and are absolutely thrilled with their move. When I asked them why they chose Paradise Village they told me that they always wanted to live in the country. Friends told them about our Park and so they drove through here on different occasions and found it to be a peaceful community, not far from Winnipeg, they liked what they saw and eventually bought their home. They have already used the swimming pool and intend to get involved in the other activities and events that we discussed. During our conversation I found both Gordon and Shirley had a very positive attitude about Paradise Village which was nice to hear. Gordon, before retirement, was an IT Specialist with the University of Manitoba. Shirley is self-employed as a cleaning woman, so if you need your home cleaned, give Shirley a call. In her spare time, Shirley makes jewellery, does scrapbooking, and is now into adult coloring. Gordon spends his free time at the gym and is also very interested in antique radios. They have 2 children and 1 grandchild. We hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners, and other activities offered here at in the Village. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living here in our beautiful Paradise Village. Welcome Gordon and Shirley. 12

A
pril 9th the Recreation Center was transformed into the era of Elvis, when 110 enthusiastic folks gathered and reminisced those long ago days. The hall was decorated with much memorabilia. 45 rpms, guitars, miniature vintage cars hanging from the ceiling, hula hoops were seen everywhere, and numerous LP covers graced the walls. Elvis himself was there in life size replicas. He still thrilled the ladies who wanted their photo taken with him! The DJ’s , Ron Gunn and Larry Menec, kept the dance floor full of jivers, twisters, and swingers. There were several Spot Dances with fun prizes. Several door prizes were also won by some lucky folks. The 50/50 went to Evelyn Fillion and Rae Machan won the draw for a $50.00 gift certificate from Boston Pizza. Those who arrived in period costume were much appreciated and had a grand time showing off their characters. Costume winners for the 50’s were Jan Serediuk and Brian Fulmore. For the 60’s, Joy Morrison and Terry Serediuk were chosen. Thanks to the judges: Jerry Ferguson and Linda and Louie LaBerge for their assistance. And then there was Naomi who dressed as a pregnant Hippie. She carried a sign that stated “I should have danced all night!” A Poodle Skirt contest was held and 8 ladies were entered. All looked terrific; however, Pat Zubrin and Linda Fulmore tied for the first prize. (Pat had actually prepared both costumes!) The group seemed to enjoy the authentic Winnipeg Country Sausage style hot dogs. Remember the days of Skinners and The Old Half Moon? Nostalgia, for certain. Many thanks to all the donors of prizes, Vivian Deurbreuck, Paul Hebert of Riverbend Realty, Joy Morrison, Pat Zubrin, Vida Bowyer, Carol Stoess. Frank Leys, Larry Menec, Marilyn Brick, Walter & Pat Panych and to Terry and Jan for loan of the great LP covers!
PS Naomi’s baby, a girl, arrived in April 1960! We truly enjoyed preparing the evening for you! The Coordinating group: Larry, Ron, Vida, Carol, JoAnne, Joy, Marilyn, Sherran, and Rose. Submitted by Joy Morrison Photos by Ron Gunn

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Singing and music have long been an avenue of worship and praise for the Christian Church. Even Jesus & His disciples “sang a Hymn” just before going to the Mount of Olives. (Matthew 26:30). The “Psalms” of the Hebrew people were actually songs that they sang in worship to God. David wrote: “O come let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation“ (Psalm 95:1) The apostle Paul exhorts Christians: “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:19). Finally, James in his epistle shares a secret of handling “afflictions” and other of life’s situations: “Is any among you afflicted, let him pray. Is any merry, let him sing psalms.“ (James 5:13-16). We need to “get used to” singing and music: the book of Revelation tells us that Heaven will be filled with joyful singing, music, praise and worship to our wonderful Lord...and we’re invited to “join in”!!!
A “SPECIAL INVITATION” TO ALL VILLAGE RESIDENTS: Come and enjoy a Sunday Morning (May 15, 10-11 am) of SINGING & MUSIC by the “musical couple” IRWIN & ELIZABETH TOPNICK Lunch and fellowship to follow - it’s free to all. Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.

A priest was walking down the street one day. Up ahead he saw a man approaching him. It seemed he was dressed like a beggar. He was weaving back and forth, and the priest asked if he was all alone. He said, “No, I got my 2 brothers with me, Johnny Walker and Jack Daniels.” The priest asked, “Have you ever been baptised?” “No, sir. I don’t believe I have.” Well, there was a river near by, so the priest took him down to the river and dunked his head in for about 15 seconds. He pulled his head up and asked, “Did you see Jesus?” “No, sir, I did not.” So he pushed his head in again for 30 seconds, pulled him up again, and he asked, “Did you see Jesus?’ “No sir, I did not.” So the priest put his head under water again for about one minute. Again the asked, “Did you see Jesus?” The beggar said, “Are you sure this is where he fell in?” Submitted by Julian DeGrave

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS Your brain teaser for the day. Be patient, you’ll get there. By the end of this, you should be multilingual. Congratulations!! I was recently in Vancouver and decided to learn the Chinese language, so I could understand the check-outs at McDonalds. My next move is to learn Indian, so I can understand my doctors and the person that answers the phone when I have a warranty problem. The Role of a Gluten-free Diet for Celiac Disease and as a Personal Dietary Choice by JoAnne Conrad, MS, Licensed Dietitian The dietary practice of following a gluten-free diet has become popular in the last few years. Gluten refers to specific peptide fractions of proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley. A gluten-free diet might also exclude oats. Medical practitioners are divided as to whether oats are acceptable. Some research suggests that oats in themselves are gluten-free, but can be contaminated by other grains during distribution or processing. Products made from corn, potatoes, rice, quinoa, millet, flax, nut flours, and buckwheat are allowed. Individuals can expect differences in textures and flavors of common foods using the substitute flours. The major indication for a gluten-free diet is Celiac disease, an inflammatory small intestinal disorder that results from an inappropriate T cell-mediated autoimmune response to the ingestion of gluten by persons who are genetically predisposed. The autoimmune inflammatory response leads to malabsorption, malnutrition, and possibly malignancy. The prevalence of the disease has been underestimated in the past and now is considered to be about 1 in 133 persons in the US. The onset and first occurrence of symptoms may appear any time from infancy to adulthood, but the peak in diagnosis occurs between the fourth and sixth decade. Approximately 20% of cases are diagnosed after age 60 years. Because the presentation and onset of symptoms vary greatly, celiac disease may be misdiagnosed as irritable bowel, lactase deficiency, or other disorders not necessarily involving the GI tract. Symptoms might include generalized fatigue, failure to gain or maintain weight, chronic diarrhea, or the consequences of nutrient malabsorption, including anemias, or bone loss. A gluten-free diet is the keystone in the treatment for celiac disease. Celiac disease is considered chronic and requires lifelong omission of gluten from the diet. Gluten-free diets have become popular among individuals who want to treat celiac disease-like symptoms in the absence of a positive test for celiac disease. In 2011 a panel of celiac experts concluded that there is a condition related to gluten other than celiac disease and named it "non-celiac gluten sensitivity". People with gluten sensitivity usually complain of gas, abdominal bloating, diarrhea or constipation. Many individuals report feeling better on a gluten-free diet. Other individuals turn to the diet as a personal health choice. At this time, there are no documented studies demonstrating health benefits to a gluten-free diet for those who are not gluten sensitive. As the popularity of following a gluten-free diet has increased, more gluten-free products are available of which many can be unhealthy. Manufacturers often add extra sugar for flavor and fat to simulate the texture and satisfying fullness that gluten imparts. Gluten free does not mean calorie or fat free. Reading labels is vital as many products, such as ice cream, processed luncheon meats, herbal supplements and some over-the counter and prescription medications, may have offending grains included. There are many restaurants that advertise gluten-free menu items, but it is important to be aware that the variety of cooking procedures and utensils used may lead to cross contamination. Sales of gluten-free products increased 16 percent in 2012 according to the Nielson Company. Until recently, manufacturers have been able to use their own discretion as to how much gluten they include in a product because these products were not regulated. However, The FDA has now set a standard for labeling gluten-free foods. The amount of gluten allowed is low enough so that most people who have celiac disease will not experience an adverse effect if they eat the product. Celiac disease patients will often be deficient in numerous vitamins and minerals due to malabsorption, diarrhea, and/or steatorrhea. Initially a multi-vitamin mineral supplement should be recommended to remedy deficiencies and replenish nutrient stores. Anemias should be treated with iron, folate or B12 supplementation depending on the nature of the anemia. Bone loss should be treated with calcium and vitamin D. Zinc, magnesium, and other mineral deficits may need to be corrected. Vitamins A and E may be necessary to replenish stores depleted by steatorrhea. Adequate intake of the B vitamins is also important for any individual following a gluten-free diet. Whole grains containing gluten are typically rich in the B vitamins and most refined grain products are supplemented with B vitamins in addition to calcium, iron, and other minerals. That is not always the case for gluten-free foods as many gluten-free products are not fortified or enriched. A person following a gluten-free food plan should keep this in mind. It is important to read labels and consult with a health care provider if supplementation is necessary. Care must be taken to assure proper intake of vitamins and minerals whether a gluten-free diet is followed for medical reasons or as a personal dietary choice. 36

Cardiac Arrest is the absence of a pulse and not breathing. A heart attack occurs when an area of the heart is deprived of blood flow/oxygen for a prolonged period of time (more than 20-30 minutes) The heart muscle begins to die which causes chest pain. The lack of adequate blood flow can occur with severe narrowing of the carotid artery by plaque or with cracked and erosion of plaque which causes a blood clot to break off and completely block the coronary artery. Blood vessel spasms can also result in inadequate blood oxygen to the heart with subsequent heart muscle death. Ischemic Heart disease is the abnormal electrical rhythm such as Ventricular Fibrillation, where the heart beats are inadequate to pump blood. Warning signs of a heart attack: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Chest pain or tightness lasting longer than 20 minutes that is not relieved by rest Pain radiating down the left arm and /or pain in the back Sweating Shortness of breathe Nausea and /or vomiting Dusky (blue) colour to the lips and nail beds
Atypical signs seen more often in women, the elderly, and diabetics include feeling weak, light-headed, and fainting. Cardiac Arrest most often develops within 4 hours of the onset of the symptoms. Warning signs of a Stroke: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg especially on one side of the body Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Trouble seeing in one or both eyes Dizziness, loss of balance of difficulty walking Severe headache with no known cause
Further to the information just provided, we are planning to have a demonstration and video on how to use the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) that is in the Recreation Center. There will be sign-up sheets on the Recreation Center Bulletin Board for those who wish to attend. Depending on interest there will be more than one session. Submitted by Barb Prior 38
