Dart players are requested to arrive at 6:30 pm in time for the 7:00 pm startup. Thanks to Justin, we have new cases for the dart boards and also recessed lighting, no more broken bulbs. We have also been supplied with floor mats to protect the new floor. We welcome both men and women to come join us for exercise and a socially fun time. Those who have never played the game of darts before are encouraged to come out and give it a try! You will be put on a team each week and we will be happy to show you how the game is played. The cost is $1.00 per person every Monday. The funds collected go towards prizes and our wind-up tournament and BBQ in May. We hope to see you there! For more information call 204-422-6342. September 2015

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Chris and Jeannie Gatien - 40 Nature Drive- moved from Winnipeg on June 22, 2015. Chris told me that they have been looking at Paradise Village for a number of years and now that they are both retired, it was time to downsize and move to our charming and peaceful community. They both like the idea that we are conveniently located to Winnipeg. Paradise Village is designed for seniors who would like to enjoy a maintenance free lifestyle while not sacrificing their own private home, garden, yard, and pets. Chris was a Supervisor with City of Winnipeg Transit and Jeannie was a Finance Analyst with Manitoba Health. We discussed the variety of activities and events held at the Recreation Center so I'm sure you'll be seeing them there in the near future. Jeannie loves to golf, read, play cards and recently took up quilting. Chris also likes to golf, do woodworking and dabbles in photography. They also have 2 children and 3 grandchildren which I'm sure keep them busy. Welcome to Paradise Village Chris and Jeannie. Robert & Rita Chenier - 14 Parkview Drive - moved to Paradise Village on July 18th from South Junction. A very pleasant conversation was had with both of them. I outlined all the different activities offered at the Recreation Center so hopefully, in the not too distant future, we will see them at some of the functions. In our discussions, Rita told me that they have been checking out Paradise Village for the past couple of years as their place in South Junction had a really big yard which just became too much to look after and so they decided it was time to downsize. They both liked what they saw here and still had their own space, not like living in a Condo in the city. It is always so nice to hear these positive comments coming from our newcomers. Before retirement, Bob was a lumber grader in Sprague. He is a very talented woodworker and proudly showed me some of his work - beautiful. He also loves building puzzles in his spare time and has dozens of boxes of puzzles to prove it. Rita was a hostess/waitress in a restaurant and because of this loves to cook and bake. She also does a bit of sewing, scrapbooking, and loves decorating and painting. They have been blessed with one daughter who lives in Winnipeg. Welcome to Paradise Village Bob & Rita. Garry & Josi Peters - 42 Paradise Drive - moved from Marchand to Paradise Village on July 23, 2015. Had an awesome visit with Garry & Josi over a couple of cups of coffee. They are both very friendly and happy they made the choice to move here. They told me they had been driving through the area for years and decided way back then that this was the place they were going to retire to and so now they're here. They love all the trees and birds and like so many other new residents have told me in the past, it's like living at the lake with no water. We talked about all the activities and events that are held here throughout the year and hopefully in the not too distant future we will see them partaking in some of these events. Garry is a retired Jr. High teacher and after 35 years of teaching deserves the relaxation and peace he will get living in Paradise Village. His interests are computers, electronics and walking. Josi is still working 3 days a week as a counsellor. Besides working, she is also a writer, does a lot of reading, some sewing and walking. Garry and Josi have 2 of the most adorable dogs, an adult Beagle and a very rambunctious Beagle puppy, They are blessed with 4 children and 4 grandchildren which they visit with often. Welcome to beautiful Paradise Village and I just know you'll enjoy your stay as much as I do.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you ' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The Member of Parliament was very happy and left the shop.

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it. 13

Casino News Effective mid August we are no longer with TPI. We are now Lady Luck Tours. This change will not affect our regular monthly trips. There will be a slight change for the South Beach Trips. In order to offer you such good deals for these trips, we do have to have our buses full (or close to it) Our recent South Beach trips have not met this condition so I have been asked to pick up additional people in Beausejour, starting with our September trip. For those not familiar with South Beach, it is a very popular trip and with the rebate, pretty much a free trip‌.. a nice getaway in a lovely hotel. At this time the South Beach Trip for September 28/29 th is full and I have a waiting list. The next South Beach trip will be November 17/18th.

Upcoming Free Monthly trips to Winnipeg are: October 13th, November 10th, December 8th I have received very positive feed back for both weeks of FOLKLORAMA. All the Pavilions provided us with excellent food, drink and entertainment. A good time was had by all. ******* 2016 – Because of the demand, I have already requested dates for buses/hotels for Winnipeg Casinos and South Beach trips. When these are confirmed, I will post them here. Marilyn Peters, Hostess Phone: 204-326-4939 20

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Submitted by Councillor Randy Eros R.M. Ste. Anne - Ward 6

September, 2015 It was my great pleasure to meet many of the Paradise Village residents at your Annual General Meeting in June. Congratulations to the executive on their appointments. I look forward to working with you over the next year. The R.M.’s mosquito control program has been up and running again this summer and you may have seen the staff from The Canadian Center for Mosquito Management testing the water for larvae and applying treatment where needed. A Policeman Pulls Over 5 Old Ladies And The Reason Why Is Hysterical Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!” So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five old ladies — two in the front seat and three in the back – eyes wide and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, “Officer, I don’t understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?” “Ma’am,” the officer replies, “You weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers.” “Slower than the speed limit?” she asked. No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly… Twenty-Two miles an hour!” the old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that “22” was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer for pointing out her error. “But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask… Is everyone in this car ok? “These women seem awfully shaken and they haven’t muttered a single peep this whole time.” the officer asks.“Oh, they’ll be alright in a minute officer. We just got off Route 119.” 21

Paradise Village Singles - August

t was Monday, the 10th of August, and if you wanted a fun affair you were at Margaret Rougeau’s home for our Pot Luck Dinner. Lucky we were, as the weather was one of those perfect summer evenings….pleasant enough to have seating on the deck and sunroom. Margaret was an outstanding hostess and had tables beautifully arranged. There were three first timers present…. Darlene, Amy, and Denise. Please make it a habit to attend ladies. We really enjoyed meeting and chatting with you. Birthday celebration was all for Barry Knox who absolutely enjoyed being surrounded by ladies. Some of his guy friends helped him, too (see photos.) I wonder how many years that single candle represented?! Thanks to Pat for the delicious homemade cake! If you are convinced about our good times, you will want to attend the September Pot Luck which will be held : Monday Sept 7th, 2015 5 pm at the home of Ursula and Stephen 15 Harmony Lane 204-422-4032 Please don't forget to call the hosts indicating whether or not you will attend. Note: To lessen the burden on folks that do the phoning, we ask that you be prepared to share your email and /or text communication number to facilitate notifications. Those who are not on the internet will still receive phone calls.

This is an oldie but in case you haven’t seen it before, here goes.... Ukrainian Logic

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Just can't beat this logic. A Ukrainian walked into a bank in Toronto and asked for the loan officer. He told the loan officer that he was going to Kiev on business for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000 and that he was not a depositor at the bank. The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so the Ukrainian handed over the keys to a new Ferrari. The car was parked on the street in front of the bank. The Ukrainian produced the title for the car, and everything checked out. The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge 12% interest. Later, the bank's president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the Ukrainian for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral for a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drove the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parked it. Two weeks later, the Ukrainian returned and repaid the $5,000 and interest of $23.07. The loan officer said, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is: Why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The Ukrainian replied, "Where else in Toronto can I park my car for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?"

Ah, the Ukrainians... See! Kielbasa & Vodka 'IS' good for the brain.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Luke, the writer of the “Book of Acts” tells us that: “….the disciples were first called Christians at Antioch” (Acts 11:26b) It is notable that the “disciples” (also known as “believers”’ “brethren”, “learners”, “saints”, “followers of the Way”) did not at first call themselves “Christians”: others did, and at the beginning, it was used as a derogatory term. But, as the followers of Christ multiplied, and people saw their loving and positive lives, the name “Christians” became the accepted and common term that even believers used to designate true believers in Jesus Christ: those who were living holy and dedicated lives in following Jesus and being “Christ-like” as His lights in the world. Today, the name “Christian” may, sadly, too often, be used lightly, and not be describing dedicated followers of Christ, as in that first century church, where the emphasis was on commitment of one’s entire being to Jesus. May we endeavor, relying wholly on the Lord’s ever-present help, seek to become more and more “Christ-like”! Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall.

MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. LADIES Outing and Lunch Fellowship: takes place each month and all ladies are welcome to come for a time of great fellowship at various places...Rides can be arranged. Call Erna Martens for details.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry... You worry about Conservatives versus Liberals, etc. -- relax, here is your real problem. In a University Classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be Prime Minister of Canada. It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming Prime Minister.

The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?" Yep, these are the same kinds of 18-year-olds that are now voting in our elections! They breed, and they walk among us...Lord -- we need more help than we thought we did! 27

GOD to ST. FRANCIS: Frank......You know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees, and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles. St. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass. GOD: Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there? ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn. GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy. ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week. GOD: They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay? ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags. GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it? ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away. GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away? ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir. GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work. ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it. GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life. ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away. GOD: No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose? ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves. GOD: And where do they get this mulch? ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch. GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight? CATHERINE: 'Dumb and Dumber', Lord. It's a story about

‌‌..

GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis. 30

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 170-142 avenue Centrale 204-422-8226 A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village.

Osteoporosis and Nutritional Supplements Osteoporosis is often referred to as the silent disease because bone loss is gradual and painless and usually there are no symptoms to indicate a person is developing this condition. Often the first symptom is a fracture. Over 44 million Americans have osteoporosis of which 80% are women. The majority of cases are in women greater than 50 years of age. One in two women will have an osteoporosis-related fracture during her lifetime. Fractures of the hip typically result in long-term nursing care and a 20% death rate within a year. There are two types of osteoporosis: Type 1 is postmenopausal or estrogen/androgen deficient osteoporosis and occurs in women within a few years of menopause. Men may also develop Type 1 during adulthood if they have a significant decline in androgen production. Type 2 is age-related and occurs around age 70 and beyond. It affects both sexes. Secondary osteoporosis results when a medication or disease process causes loss of bone tissue. Some medications are: corticosteroids, phenytoin, aluminum- containing antacids and PPIs. A recent study reported in the BMJ January 31, 2012 found that long-term use of PPIs increases the risk of hip fractures by 35 to 50% for postmenopausal women who are either current or former smokers. Some medical conditions that can increase the risk of osteoporosis are diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and COPD. Conventional osteoporosis therapy includes bisphosphonates, calcitonin, SERMs and parathyroid hormone. Nutritional supplements are also available. Calcium and Vitamin D: Most research supports the combination of vitamin D and calcium for the reduction of bone fractures in older adults. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends 400 IU to 800 IU vitamin D daily for adults under age 50 and 800 IU to 1000 IU daily for older adults. The recommended calcium intake for adults under age 50 is a total of 1,000 mg /day of calcium from all sources. Adults 50 and older need a total of 1,200 mg/day of calcium from all sources. Food remains the best source of calcium. Calcium supplements should only be used when adequate dietary intake cannot be achieved. A calcium and vitamin D supplement should be taken when using a bisphonate medication in order to maintain adequate serum calcium levels. Take these supplements two hours after a dose of bisphosphonate. The exact role of magnesium in bone health is not known but it is involved in enzymatic processes that build bone. Some evidence suggests that a magnesium deficiency may be a risk factor for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Magnesium deficiency alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that regulate calcium. A low level can also result in impaired synthesis of vitamin D. You will frequently see magnesium included in calcium supplements. Drugs that can reduce serum magnesium are digoxin, diuretics, and long-term use of PPIs. See you in October……...

Submitted by Barb Prior Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT If you have a lengthy trip planned, you might want to make sure you work in some leg stretches along the way. That's because blood clots-or deep vein thrombosis can occur if you're sitting for extended lengths of time. Without proper treatment the blood clot can break off and travel to other areas of the body including the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening emergency called pulmonary embolism. 60,000 to 100,000 people die each year in the USA due to pulmonary embolism.

Risks, you are more susceptible to a blood clot if: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

you are older than 40 years of age [ the risk increases the older you are] you have recently had major surgery if there is a family history of blood clots if you have limited mobility [causes blood flow to slow down] if you are over weight you are a smoker if you have chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease etc.

To reduce the chances of getting a deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism while you are travelling, you should: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

move your legs often in your seat do stretches by flexing and pointing your toes on a plane or train, walk up and down the aisle in a car, stop every hour and walk around for a few minutes stay well- hydrated while travelling wear compression stockings if recommended by your doctor discuss your travel plans with your doctor who may prescribe a blood thinner before your trip.

Symptoms of deep vein thrombosis: As many as 1/2 of people who have a blood clot don't realize they have one, which is why prevention is so important. Those who have symptoms experience them in the affected leg, and they include: 1) pain and tenderness [especially while standing or walking] 2) swelling of affected area 3) redness of the skin-it feels hot to the touch Symptoms of Pulmonary embolism when the clot travels to the lungs: 1) difficulty breathing 2) chest pain, especially when taking a deep breath 3) rapid heart rate 4) sudden coughing and/or coughing up blood 5) fainting IF YOU HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS AFTER A LONG FLIGHT OR CAR RIDE SEEK EMERGENCY ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY 34

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

A lawyer and two friends--a Rabbi, and a Hindu holy man--had car trouble in the countryside and asked to spend the night with a farmer. The farmer said, "There might be a problem. You see, I only have room for two to sleep in the house. So one of you must sleep in the barn." "No problem," chimed the Rabbi. "My people wandered in the desert for forty years. I am humble enough to sleep in the barn for one evening." With that he departed to the barn, and the others bedded down for the night. Moments later a knock was heard at the door; the farmer opened the door. There stood the Rabbi from the barn. "What's wrong?" asked the farmer. He replied, "I am grateful to you, but I just can't sleep in the barn. There is a pig in the barn, and my faith believes that is an unclean animal." His Hindu friend agrees to swap places with him. But a few minutes later the same scene reoccurs. There is a knock on the door. "What's wrong?" the farmer asks. The Hindu holy man replies, "I, too, am grateful for your helping us out, but there is a cow in the barn. In my country cows are considered sacred and I can't sleep on holy ground!" That left only the lawyer to make the change. He grumbled and complained, but went out to the barn. Moments later there was another knock on the farmer's door. Frustrated and tired, the farmer opens the door, and there stood the pig and the cow. Submitted by Julian Degrave 35

“Here is some food for thought…We should place the elderly in prisons. They will get a shower a day, video surveillance in case of problems, three hot meals a day, access to a library, computer, TV, gym, doctor on-site, & free medication if needed. We should put criminals in nursing homes. They have cold meals, lights off at 7pm, two showers a week, live in a smaller room and pay rent at $4,000 a month!!! PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Volunteer Drivers There are residents in Paradise Village who may need assistance to get to a medical appointment in Ste. Anne, Lorette, Steinbach or Winnipeg. Arrangements as to times and donations towards gas and/or parking are between the resident requiring assistance and the resident driver. If you require assistance, you may call a driver directly or call: Pat Shaffer

204-422-5051

Because drivers are not always available, we need to increase the number of volunteers. If you could help with this service, please call Pat. DRIVERS WHO PREFER TO USE THEIR OWN VEHICLE: Bob & Hazel Hicks 204-422-5790 (Summer Only) John Sluis 204-422-4111 Norm Cunningham 204-422-9177 Al Wastle

DRIVERS WHO WILL USE EITHER THEIR OWN OR THE RESIDENT’S VEHICLE: Hey folks, did you submit to “What’s The Caption?” on what is your thought on what is being said or done in each picture. I want as many responses as possible. Let’s have some fun. Go back to Page 17 and give us your thoughts. Idea and photos compliments of Wayne Pierce.
