PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Harold Thiessen and Barb Millman We would like to welcome and introduce these new residents to Paradise Village who moved into 12 Parkview on July 1st, 2016. Both Harold and Barb are retired and moved into Paradise from Winnipeg. They had been actively looking for about 1 1/2 to 2 years in Paradise trying to find the perfect home and location. It was a surprise call from their realtor who told them about 12 Parkview that had just gone on the market and they came to look at the home right away. Well, long story short, by the end of that day they purchased their home in Paradise Village. Although they have not gone through all of their packed boxes yet, they are so very happy with their purchase. And Joanne and myself were given a tour of the home and we too agree that it is a beautiful home. Barb was born in Ontario and had lived in Winnipeg for about 35 years. Barb had owned her own deli called the Deli Stop on Eagle Drive and is now retired full time. Barb loves crafts and typically attends about 10 craft shows a year. Harold had worked with Penner International as a driver and is now retired full time. He has been to every state in the U.S. except for Hawaii and Alaska. He has been from one end of Canada to other as well. Barb joined Harold on many trips and she enjoyed every minute of it. Harold is also a car enthusiast and owns an 84 Corvette he is happy to say. Between the two of them they share 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys and have 6 grandchildren. Harold and Barb are new members of the PVRA (Paradise Village Residents Association) and we welcome them! Kerry & Dian Fulford – 6 Harmony Lane - Kerry and Dian moved to Paradise Village from St James. Their possession date was on July 16, 2016. They have been busy un-packing, organizing and also working in their yard. Dian was a hair stylist in Winnipeg, and Kerry worked in management at Speedy Auto Glass for 40 years. Dian is a very talented lady, she loves to paint with oil and acrylic, (she showed us a beautiful painting of a Blue Heron) that she had done. She also loves gardening and is a volunteer at their Church. Kerry loves golfing and once he finishes getting unpacked, he said that he would be out on the golf course again. He enjoys being outdoors, and also loves reading. They have 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. We talked about the events that are coming up and some of the activities that are offered daily and weekly. Hopefully we will see you at the up-coming functions. Welcome to Paradise. 3

A rebuttal to the letter inserted in the June newsletter‌.
I have been thinking of the letter written in the June newsletter regarding the shape of the roads in Paradise Village. This lady said she would not consider moving here because of the condition of our roads. I immediately thought "then why is she living in Winnipeg?" We travel to the city at least once a week - Archibald, Ness Ave, St. James St. - just to name a few - their roads are no better than our Paradise roads!!! My husband, Jack, and I have lived in Paradise for 24 years. We have our 'home' on the market right now....not because we are unhappy here but because it is time for us to make a change - due to health issues and 'age'. Looking back I remember a friend asking me "do you really want to move way out there". I replied that we did. We had moved 23 times in our married life and this was the first time we "chose" where we wanted to live. At that time we had a fifth wheel and did a lot of travelling year around. Where else could you live knowing you home, yard, etc. were being taken care of? We have a lovely Recreation Center with a pool (grandchildren love that!!), exercise room, library, coffee hours and lots of activities - if you chose to take part. We just celebrated Canada's birthday with friends and neighbours with games and great food. Over the years people have come and gone but we have kept in touch with a few with whom we have formed bonds. Our 24 years here has been extremely happy and we have no complaints....it is only a short drive to Ste. Anne where there are doctors, dentist, hospital, post office, grocery store, gas station, library and I could go on. Steinbach is close by if you need your 'weekly' grocery order, eye appointment, hearing aids, choice of banks, and many other amenities. Oh, I neglected to mention the golf courses!! Checking the prices of apartments and condo's, etc. makes one realize just how lucky we are.....I have totalled up our monthly rental, gas, hydro, telephone, TV, -- then looked at yearly expenses - taxes, auto insurance (more expensive in the city), house insurance......No where can we live as comfortably as we do in Paradise!!!! When you think of all our amenities the 'bad' roads did not seem to be worth getting ourselves to upset about.......besides the lanes are always in good shape!!! I must mention also for the last few years we have had to spend the winters here. The winter Jack had his heart surgery, we were driving to the city three or four times a week and we never had to worry about shovelling our sidewalk or getting out of our garage!!! Yes Jack and I will be sorry to leave Paradise Village.....and I sincerely hope that others would not miss the opportunity to live in "Paradise" because of road conditions.
Sincerely Pat Poole 3 Nature Drive.

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Well, summer is on it’s way out…. …..no one likes it, but it’s a fact. I think the Village and Management did an “Okay Job” this year considering the weather. Drainage was done, the roads were no worse for wear, and the aesthetics of the Village did not deteriorate as much as in previous years. We enjoyed Canada Day and the BBQ Pork Event at the Recreation Center and Street Parties, with the weather cooperating, most of the time. There is a wonderful couple living here in Paradise Village that deserves recognition for collecting and donating the largest amount of Tabs that I have yet to receive. This couple managed to collect 7-25 pound bags over the past 2 years, and at approximately, 1500 tabs per pound, that works out to 262,500 tabs. Their names are Julian and Anna DeGrave, and they have lived in “Paradise Village” Seniors Mobile Home Park for the last 16 years. Julian and Anna "winter" in McAllen, Texas, where Anna has a brother teaching school. The brother has the entire school division collecting Tabs for Anna! The "Tabs" response from the good folks in the South East, has been remarkable, thanks in a large part to the support of your publication.
The entire Village thanks the many volunteers required to accomplish these events. Also, a reminder that our Second GM Meeting is scheduled for October 4th, 2016 in the Recreation Center at 7:00 pm. A worth while meeting, so please support your Executive by attending. Enjoy what is remaining of Summer. Here’s hoping for a lovely Prairie Fall and a not so Prairie Winter. Our yearly barbecue was held @Les Hooper's place and what a good time enjoyed by all. Thanks Les for hosting. Thirty two people attended and we were able to all sit down to eat; that sunroom sure came in handy. The meal as usual was delicious and such a variety; thanks Vida Darlene Newman & Barry Knox for having a list so we could choose what to bring. Not too much of one Happy Birthday! thing and it worked out well. Thanks Marvin for doing most of the cooking on the barbecue too! We had two birthdays: Darlene Newman and Barry Knox. The cake was yum yum good!!!! The monthly singles get together is really a fun time where everybody is so friendly. You also may get to meet new residents that move in. So, new single residents, you are welcome to join us. Just bring a food dish but phone the host or hostess and let him or her know you are coming. Meeting of the Minds
The September 12th Singles’ Pot Luck will be hosted by Linda and Cynthia 8 Village Drive Don’t forget to call them with your RSVP 204-422-5198 Relaxing in the sunroom enjoying each other’s company

A Teacher asked 3 people to brace themselves for a math question. She asked how they would solve it. The first one said, “I will use a calculator.” The second one said, “I will use a pencil and paper.” The third one being a Ukrainian said, “I will use my head.” The Teacher said, “I will give you only 10 seconds time,” and then proceeded. “How many seconds are there in a year?” After the time limit she asked the first one if he had the answer. He didn’t because his battery in the calculator went dead halfway through the time limit. The second one did not have the answer either because the lead in his pencil broke. The third one, the Ukrainian, said he had it all figured out in his head in no time. The Teacher then said, “Well then, how many seconds are there in a year?” He said, “12!” The Teacher asked, “How did you arrive at that answer?” “Well,” he said, “2nd of January, 2nd of February, 2nd of March,” etc. etc. Submitted by Julian De Grave 9

Here’s a foto of the caterpillar stage of the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly feasting on my parsley plant. They are very easily identified with green and black stripes and yellow spots. Eventually, a chrysalis will form from each caterpillar and metamorphosis will occur, then a butterfly will emerge fully able to fly. The host plant, where eggs are first laid & caterpillars appear, include dill and fennel of the carrot family as well as the parsley shown here. So, if you spy the caterpillars on your plants it will require a sacrifice on your part as you will lose your parsley.
Please do not destroy the caterpillars as they are the beginning of a miracle of nature.

Paradise and Village Drive Street Party Rain or Shine! The broad definition of a street party is to meet neighbours, build community spirit, bond socially, dance, and share fun, in a let-your-hair-down kind of way. Basically, in Paradise Village, this means drop whatever you’re doing and just come as you are. Just put together a tasty dish or salad, pack munchies and cool liquid refreshments, even bring along an interesting outdoor game. To that end the residents of Paradise Drive knew how to party on August 4th, despite having to reschedule to the following sunshine day because of mother nature’s drenching downpour. Thanks to all the fun “street people” who made our event a complete success.

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Feeling “down”; tired, discouraged, and generally “discontent”? I’ve “been there and done that”! So have most of us! But, with God’s help, we can see all that change in our lives. I believe that the very first step is to give ourselves fully into God’s hands: (See Romans 12:1,2) He has a plan and purpose for our lives and it is always “good” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV) The Bible assures us: “Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you” (James 4:8) And there in His Presence, Psalm 16:11 tells us: “is fullness of joy and pleasures for evermore.” Add to that what Nehemiah 8:10 observes: “the joy of the Lord is our strength.” Finally, in the “joy and strength” from the Lord, we can, like the apostle Paul, declare: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) Now, we will go from “bottom drawer defeat” to “top drawer victories” with the Lord at our side! Try it!
Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall. MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of your Village Church.

ARTHRITIS The word arthritis means inflammation of the joint (“artho” meaning joint and “itis” meaning inflammation). Inflammation is a medical term describing pain, stiffness, redness and swelling. Arthritis is a disease that can involve any of the joints in the body, often occurring in the hip, knee, spine or other weight-bearing joints, but can also affect the fingers and other non-weight-bearing joints. Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, swelling, stiffness and fatigue. Untreated inflammation can eventually lead to joint damage, destruction and disability. Some forms of arthritis can also affect the body’s internal organs. Arthritis consists of more than 100 different conditions Arthritis consists of more than 100 different conditions which range from relatively mild forms of tendinitis and bursitis to crippling systemic forms, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It includes pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia and arthritis-related disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, that involve every part of the body. Other forms of the disease, such as gout, are almost never thought of as arthritis, while osteoarthritis is often thought to be the only form of this disease. Joint pain is the most common denominator The common denominator for all of these conditions is joint and musculoskeletal pain, which is why they are grouped together as 'arthritis.' Often this pain is a result of inflammation of the joint lining. Inflammation is involved in many forms of arthritis and is the body's natural response to injury. The warning signs presented by inflammation are redness, swelling, heat and pain. When a joint becomes inflamed, it may get any or all of these symptoms. This can prevent the normal use of the joint and therefore it can cause the loss of function of that joint. Arthritis can affect anyone Arthritis affects people of every age, gender & ethnic background. Genetics, age and lifestyle can all play a part in increasing one’s risk of developing arthritis. For instance, the likelihood of developing OA increases with age, a physically demanding job (e.g., athlete, heavy machinery operator) and/or previous joint injury. Treating arthritis Establishing an early diagnosis is critical to the outcome of the disease, since it only progressively worse and therapies work best when started as early as possible.
September is National Arthritis Awareness Month 32

Acorn and Oak Leaves in a Harmonious Mandala What is a Mandala? A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form. In fact, "mandala" is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Mandalas generally have one identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes and forms. Mandalas can contain both geometric and organic forms. They can also contain recognizable images that carry meaning for the person who is creating it. In essence, mandalas represent the connection between our inner worlds and outer reality. Designing your own mandalas can be both inspirational and therapeutic. 35

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS
Bran Flakes Submitted by Paulette Barley The couple were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade. One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favourite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, 'Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.' The old man asked St. Peter how much all this was going to cost. 'Why, nothing,' St. Peter replied, 'remember, this is your reward in Heaven.' The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth. 'What are the greens fees?' grumbled the old man. 'This is heaven,' St. Peter replied. 'You can play for free, every day.' Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic desserts, and free flowing beverages. ‘Don't even ask,' said St. Peter to the man. This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.' The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife. 'Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods and the decaffeinated tea?' he asked. 'That's the best part,' St. Peter replied, 'You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!' The old man pushed, 'No gym to work out at?' 'Not unless you want to,' was the answer. 'No testing my sugar or blood pressure or....' 'Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself.' The old man glared at his wife and said, 'You and your fucking Bran Flakes. We could have been here ten years ago!'

Volunteer Drivers There are residents in Paradise Village who may need assistance to get to a medical appointment in Ste. Anne, Lorette, Steinbach or Winnipeg. Arrangements as to times and donations towards gas and/or parking are between the resident requiring assistance and the resident driver. If you require assistance, you may call a driver directly: Because drivers are not always available, we need to increase the number of volunteers.
