Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Joe & Pat Walterson - 29 Village Drive - moved from Oakbank to Paradise Village on September 1, 2015. They are absolutely thrilled to be living in our charming and peaceful seniors complex. Pat loves the pool and they both commented on the environment - the trees, nature, and the quietness which is similar to their winters spent in Texas. We had a very lengthy conversation - would you believe 3 1/2 hours over several cups of coffee. I went over all the activities and events held throughout the year. They particularly like the idea that when they go South for the winter, they know that their house will be well looked after while they are gone. Pat was a nurse for 36 years and Joe worked for Manitoba Hydro as an electrical inspector. Pat spends as much time as she can in the pool, loves to golf and read and play cards. Joe is also a golf enthusiast, all types of sports, especially hockey, and loves to play his guitar and sing; but, he refused to sing for me. They have 2 sons, one living in Oakbank and the other in New Jersey which unfortunately they only get to see once a year. They also have 5 grandchildren. We hope to see you at our meetings, the social functions, pot luck dinners and other activities offered here in the Park. It's a good time to meet some of the other residents living in our beautiful Paradise Village. Welcome to Paradise Village. Ken & Barb Zacharias - 29 Paradise Drive - moved from Carman on September 28, 2015. They had lived in an apartment and Ken, who likes to putter in his yard, chose Paradise Village where he could take advantage of the opportunity to fulfill his desire for an active interesting and independent lifestyle in Manitoba's beautiful countryside. Even though Ken and Barb have only been here a short time, they love it here and know they have made the right choice. They also go away for the winter and feel secure knowing that their home will be very well looked after while they are away. Barb was in property management before retirement and Ken was a crane operator. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren living in Winnipeg whom they get to see often. I discussed all the events held at the Recreation Centre and encouraged them to take part, as this is a good way to meet other residents. This was all done with the help of a good cup of coffee and some yummy double chocolate cookies. Thanks for that Barb. Ken is interested in golfing and walking and now that he has his very own yard, he can do some gardening. Barb likes to read, golf, do yoga and walk. Looking forward to seeing you again soon and would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our beautiful Paradise Village. 8

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

Birds of Paradise - Allan Fifer reports a Northern Shrike was seen in Paradise Villlage… it has been added to the Birds of Paradise list. Larry Trush

The Strange World of the Shrike - It looks like a songbird. It sounds like a songbird. But it acts like a hawk! The hunter spots his prey. He quickly swoops down and slams his victim to the ground. Battering it into submission with repeated blows to its neck, he picks it up and . . . impales it upon a spike? Such violence seems more suited to a mad slasher in a horror movie than a robin-sized songbird. Yet this behavior is the ingenious adaptation of the shrike, a bird with the carnivorous tastes of a hawk without the raptor´s full set of predatory equipment. Like hawks, shrikes have keen eyesight and sharp beaks, but they do not have the same powerful talons. "They are perching birds with delicate feet," says Carola Haas, a wildlife ecologist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. "Consequently they can´t hold on to their food and eat it at the same time." So what´s a hungry shrike to do but look to nature for the necessary silverware? The birds use everything from cactus spines to hawthorn thorns to barbed wire barbs for skewering their prey, which includes insects, amphibians, reptiles, other birds and even small mammals. The two American shrike species, the loggerhead and the northern, are the only songbirds in the country that regularly prey on other adult songbirds.

DRAG RACING AND RESTORING MUSCLE CARS By Jim L’Esperance

Having grown up in the fifties and sixties my friends and I became hooked on fast cars with lots of chrome and high horsepower engines. We soon realized that the guy with the hottest car had the best looking girlfriends. (The car was the attraction, not us.) Because my parents owned two bright red Ford Galaxy convertibles I was able to drive around in nice cars, and of course, attract some pretty nice girls! One day some friends & I drove out to Keystone Dragway, the new drag strip that had recently opened about 30 miles east of the city of Winnipeg. When I saw my first Ford Thunderbolt go down the drag strip I was hooked. It was not long before I was racing a 1967 Mercury Comet with a 427-425 hp motor. I bought a Ford Ranchero with the 428 Cobra Jet engine in 1969 and was racing it when a friend of mine asked me to test his 1968 Javelin on the drag strip. I thought the Javelin was just a grocery getter for Grandma & Grandpa and I was reluctant to drive it; however, the car had a lot more get up and go than I had given it credit for. One of my friends, Tom Matthes, offered to set the car up to race so we could see what it could really do. After Tom had performed his magic we found out this little Javelin could compete with all of the factory muscle cars and win a lot of the time. One weekend I towed the Ranchero to Saskatoon with my dad’s old Galaxy, he had given to my wife, Linda. I was the #1 qualifier in the stock class and I was paged to report to the pits. I figured they were going to tear down my engine because I was running so fast, but when I talked to the Tech Director, he asked if we would consider racing the old Ford Galaxy tow car because they were short of race cars. I asked my wife Linda, to race the car but she said no, she didn’t want to. I told her “you get $50.00 win or lose.” I could see her mulling that $50.00 over in her mind, and she finally said maybe she could, but she didn’t know what to do in a race. I explained she had to “watch the lights on the Xmas tree and floor it on the last yellow, and keep it floored until you pass the timing lights at the end of the track.” I raced first and I was up against the slowest qualifier – a sure win. My car stalled at the starting line, and I lost. Unbelievable!! I went to the pit and was waiting to hook the tow bar on her car to take the race car home when she pulled into the pits. As I was about to hook up she informed me she had won!

JIM & HIS AMX

I went to watch her in the next round and she won again, next thing I know she had won race after race and is now in the final. She lost to a Dodge with a 426 Hemi motor in a close final. She won around $200.00 that day plus the $50.00 tow money. We had a 10 hour ride home and lucky me, I got to hear her analyze the races and she pointed out what I was doing wrong and why I lost. She felt she was a better driver than me, and perhaps she should drive the Hurst AMX we had agreed to buy. I could keep busy in the pits while she raced. I had no choice but to talk to the Track Manager at our home track and get him to offer her a job in the pits, selling and cooking hotdogs, etc. I sure was relieved when she took the job. (She’ll kill me when she reads this!) Go to pg 20. 14

You’re Getting Old When You’re grateful that wrinkles don’t hurt. You get out of the shower and you’re glad the mirror is fogged up. You reached the age when you know all the answers, but no one asks you any questions. You get winded playing chess. Your circulation is so bad that when you cross your legs, your arm goes to sleep. People say to you, “You’re not getting older, you’re getting better” and you believe them. Your little black book only contains names ending with M.D. The doctor gets a hernia from lifting your face. You sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going. All the things you threw out last year when you moved are now “collectors items” and are worth a fortune. Your knees buckle and your belt won’t. November 2015 Continued from Page 13….By Jim L’Esperance By 1969 American Motors was getting serious about racing. They contracted Hurst Performance Center in the USA to build 53 race cars to compete in Super Stock on the dragstrips in Canada and the USA against the other factory race cars sponsored by Ford, Chrysler and GM. Two of those Hurst AMXs came to Canada and one of them was brought to Winnipeg by Leonard McLaughlin Motors. The dealership raced the car for a short time and then sold it to my partner Brock Philips and I. We decided to name it “The AMXpress”; we bought a truck fitted with a flat deck, winch and a toolbox for hauling and we were off to the races. We raced the car for 6 years, running locally and at Saskatoon, SK. Once in a while we went to the USA. We had a lot of success with the AMX winning many Eliminator titles and 2 Points Championships in Modified Eliminator. Tom Matthes was our Crew Chief, and kept the car running. In 1975 the car was destroyed in a fire and I ended my racing career. I moved on to fishing, and my wife and I bought a cottage, which kept us busy. Around 1984 the muscle car craze started again. By then most of the guys who loved these cars were financially able to start restoring them. We soon realized these cars were a better investment than putting your money in the bank. By the 1990’s with E-Bay and computers these cars were selling for huge profits. Car shows were popular and you could find 4 to 5 hundred cars at a weekend car show in a small city like Winnipeg. In 1997 I retired from CP Rail, and with not a lot to do with my time I found myself hanging around the Show and Shines that took place in Winnipeg. The AMX’s were the ones that really drew me. The day finally came when Linda asked why we didn’t get ourselves another AMX to drive to car shows. My prayers were answered and the search began. We spent the next 6 years searching for a perfect rust free AMX. We bought a motor home and traveled for 5 months, all over the USA and Canada, searching for our car with no luck. We checked newspapers, magazines and car shows, but could not find the car we wanted. In 2003, a friend and I, drove to New Hampshire to look at an AMX listed on E-Bay as “rust free and in perfect condition.” The car was rusted badly and full of Bondo to cover the rust. The upholstery was torn badly, and it turned out the pictures we were sent were at least 5 years old. It would have cost another $10,000.00 to restore this car plus the $13,000.00 U.S. the fellow wanted for it. I told Linda “That’s the last AMX I am looking at.” One day in 2003 I stopped to see a friend’s racecar, and when I went into his shop he had a Chevy Vega sitting beside his racecar. I asked him about the Vega and he said he had planned to race it, but changed his mind, and it was for sale. A few days later I was at a yard sale with my wife and I bought a box of old hot rod books for $3.00. I was sitting in the car waiting for my wife and I picked up one of the books. On the cover was the story of the Baldwin/Motion Vegas. These were cars built by a speed shop for a dealer in New York in 1972. There were only about 12 of those cars built, and none were known to exist now. I realized my friend had the correct model to build a replica. I almost forgot Linda at the yard sale in my rush to go buy my friends Vega. I bought the car, a motor and a transmission from him. My son Peter, my sister Sharon, my nephews Mike and Joel and I had the car running in no time. Another friend, Kevin Shale painted the car in the correct color scheme and applied the spoiler and hood scoop. After the safety was done I had the car appraised by Cherry Hill Appraisals. The car was valued at $21,000.00. My replica Vega has been featured in Canadian Classics and Performance, a popular muscle car magazine. It is driven to car shows all summer. When I was looking for the hood scoop I was talking to a salesman at a parts dealership. He was asking about the Vega and I mentioned I had been looking for an AMX when I found the Vega. He said, “My dad collects old cars, and he has an AMX he might sell.” I gave him my phone number and forgot about it. A few weeks later his father called me and said the AMX was for sale……. 20

PARADISE VILLAGE NEWS

I drove out a few days later to see it in Oakbank, Manitoba, a little town just outside Winnipeg. I had a couple of friends with me who restore cars, Gerry Saunders and Colin Hillyard – an AMX expert. On the way there Colin said his wife had owned an AMX before he met her, and she had sold him on owning an AMX. Her car was sold years ago, and she never knew what had happened to it. When we arrived the fellow opened up the doors and we could not believe the cars he owned. A Plymouth GTX convertible, 2 Ford hideaway hard tops – there were at least 25 to 30 valuable cars there. The AMX was at the front, all covered in dust. Colin had his wife’s old registration along, and when he checked the serial numbers he said, “I can’t believe it, this is her old car.” I bought the car on the spot; it was in unbelievable condition. The interior had been removed to keep the mice out of the car. There was a tiny hole in the floorboard (an easy fix), and the seats and carpet needed to be renewed. The paint was like new, not one flaw. The motor ran perfect, no lifter noise and no blow-by. We are building a 390 motor for it to replace its 290 engine, and I have a super stock hood scoop to install. When I am done I will own a replica of my Hurst AMX. When we were working on the car we had trouble with a carburetor leak and the brake light was staying on. We spent hours trying to solve these problems. One morning as I was about to leave for my sons shop the phone rang. It was Tom Matthes, my old Crew Chief. I had lost track of him, and I sure was happy to hear from him. I was telling him about the AMX, and the problems I was having. He said “pick me up, I’m coming with you.” Needless to say Tom fixed the two problems in minutes. The car will be appraised this spring, and after watching these cars sell on E-Bay I am sure I made a wise investment. Linda and I plan to give it to our grandson Kevin when he is sixteen years old. We also helped race a 1971 Javelin, and I bought this car for my son Peter when it was taken off the track. He still has it, and it is sitting on a rotisserie. It will be our next project. All I need to do is figure out how to get Tom to move back from Kelowna to solve all the problems we are sure to have. Well, Linda has read this and its cost me the Vega. She said I had to give it to her if I expect to be forgiven!!

Replica of the Hurst AMX I built and still own. I raced it in the 1960's and early seventies.

Baking Soda is an environmentally friendly product that can be used as a beauty product, a cleaner, a deodorizer and can even help to control a sweet tooth! Check out these tips for uses of baking soda Hair care: Remove product build-up of gels, mousse and sprays by adding about a quarter size amount of baking soda to your regular shampoo. Wash and rinse as usual. Your hair will be shinier and more manageable. Remove the build-up of these same products on brushes and combs by soaking them in a sink of warm water and 1 tsp of baking soda overnight. Facial and body scrubs: Most commercial scrubs contain plastic micro beads which never decompose. They end up in water filtration systems causing havoc or get into rivers, lakes and oceans which poses risk to fish and other wildlife. An alternative is to make your own exfoliating scrub using 3 parts soda to 1 part water. Rub in a gentle circular motion and rinse with warm water. If you ever use self tanners and end up with an orange streaky mess this 3:1 solution will scrub it away. Deodorant: Everyone is familiar with the box of baking soda in the fridge to neutralize odors, but it will also work in closets gym bags and kitty litter boxes. If you are out of deodorant a dusting of baking soda will do the trick. Remove perspiration stains from clothes with a thick paste of soda and water . Rub on stains and let sit for 1 hour, and launder as usual. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of your trash cans to keep bad odors away. Antacid: 1 tsp baking soda in a glass of warm water will relieve heartburn. This should only be used sparingly. If heartburn is persistent see your doctor. If you crave sweets, rinse your mouth with the above solution and spit out. Your craving should disappear instantly. Itchy, Dry Skin Reliever: Add 1/2 cup baking soda to a warm (not hot) bath and soak for 20 minutes. Your skin will soften and the itch will be soothed. This also works to relieve insect bites and mild sunburn. Polish Silverware: Use the 3 parts soda to 1 part water solution to clean silver. Rub on with a clean cloth or sponge and rinse well. Cleaning: Clean the fridge with a solution of 1 tbsp of soda to 4 liters of warm water to neutralize odors Clean crayons from walls. Apply baking soda to a wet cloth and rub lightly. Wipe off with a clean, dry cloth. Add 1/2 cup soda to your laundry with the detergent. Your clothes will be cleaner, fresher and softer. Sprinkle on rugs, wait 10 minutes and vacuum Remove coffee and tea stains from cups by sprinkling soda into cups and wiping with a damp cloth. A paste of baking soda will also remove red sauce stains from plastic. To clean a pot or pan with burnt on food add 2 inches of boiling water to pan and 1/2 cup baking soda. Let sit overnight and clean with ease in the morning. Keep your rubber gloves dry and smelling good by sprinkling soda inside them. They'll slip on easier too! Car care: Clean car battery terminals - separately - with a solution of baking soda paste and a clean rag. Sprinkle soda on top of oil and grease in the garage. Scrub with a wet brush. Gasoline and oil odors can be removed by putting clothes in a trash bag with baking soda for a few days before washing them. A little soda on a damp cloth will remove bugs and tar from cars without damaging the paint. Let paste sit for a few minutes before wiping and rinsing clean. 24

November 2015

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church “Remembrance Day” is coming up shortly: A time to reflect on the past tragedies of wars and multitudes of men, women, and youth whose precious lives were lost, maimed, or forever changed in fighting for our freedom. A time also to soberly observe our present world with all of its trials and triumphs. A phrase often used at this time: “Lest we Forget” can be applied, not only to the memories of past and present wars, but also to our Christian heritage. The sacrifice of so many lives in these times of conflict both in the natural & spiritual realms certainly deserve our full recognition and honour. But there was an even greater “sacrifice” we need to fully acknowledge and embrace: that of God so loving us that He sent His “Only Beloved Son” - Jesus - to die in our place, for our sins: to make the way for all who will believe to have sins forgiven and enjoy life with Him forever (St. John 3:16) All this…..we must not forget…. Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall.

MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870.

Please watch the bulletin Boards by the mail boxes for Paradise Village Church Monthly “Special Events.” Of course, everyone is warmly welcome to attend these (and ALL) functions of you Village Church.

The Paradise Village

on October 24th

was a grand affair complete with beautifully decorated tables and well-dressed residents. The smell from the food was absolutely overwhelming and hard to resist, digging in, before Grace. This is an occasion you can surely bet my Mom and I will attend next year! We enjoyed being with many friends of Paradise Village and meeting new Paradise Villagers as well. Congratulations to Not to get myself in trouble, (though I feel several felt the same) we could have spent some time mingling 50-50 Winner...Ursula Schlichter $115.00 Door Prize Winners were after dinner. There seemed to be a need to rush to clean up and put things away. That was unfortunate Gary Danielson and Linda Fulmore and probably not intended but maybe next year there could be things to do to keep us around longer to enjoy each other’s company. Ideas?

Thank you to Rose McDonald and her team of cooks and helpers. To Chicken Chef owner, Celine, the turkey, dressing & gravy was wonderful; served hot, tasty and plentiful. We look forward to your catered Christmas Dinner on December 12th. Debbie Kokil

November 2015 Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 170-142 avenue Centrale 204-422-8226 A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village.

Glaucoma: Saving Sight with Foresight More than 4 million Americans, and nearly 70 million people worldwide, have Glaucoma. Unfortunately, according to experts more than 50% of people don’t even know they have it. Worldwide, it is the second leading cause of blindness. In the US approximately 120,000 persons are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in this country. The most common form of glaucoma is open angle glaucoma. There are two main types of glaucoma: Prim ar y Open Angle Glaucom a ("open angle") and Angle Closure Glaucoma ("narrow angle"). Open angle glaucoma is about five times more common than narrow angle, but both are marked by an increase of intraocular pressure (IOP). In some cases optic nerve damage can occur despite normal IOP. This type is called normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Open angle glaucoma tends to be insidious, progressing slowly often without overt symptoms. In most cases a person may not notice any loss of vision (initially it’s peripheral vision loss) until the disease has progressed significantly. Open angle glaucoma accounts for nearly 20% of all blindness among African-Americans compared to 6% in Caucasians. Conversely closed angle glaucoma (which is the end-point of the narrow angle type) can occur suddenly and is considered a medical emergency. It is often painful, may cause decreased or cloudy vision, swelling and facial pain as well as nausea and vomiting. On a positive note, these symptoms often lead patients to seek medical attention before permanent damage occurs. Essentially, glaucoma is caused by an imbalance in the amount of aqueous humor present in the eye at any given time. Aqueous fluid is constantly being produced and secreted by the ciliary body (located behind the iris) and eventually flows into the anterior chamber (through the pupil). At the same time, older fluid in the anterior chamber drains out through a channel known as the trabecular meshwork. Intraocular pressure depends upon exactly how much fluid is present at any given time. The elevated IOP in glaucoma is generally is due to a problem with the drainage side of the equation. In open angle glaucoma, the channel for drainage is widely accessible but the flow through the trabecular meshwork is reduced (think of your sink when the drain is clogged with hair and other junk). Conversely, narrow angle glaucoma is associated with restricted access to the drain itself due to an iris that is pushed forward and pinches off access to the trabecular meshwork. In either case, as fluid levels build up, so does intraocular pressure which ultimately can damage the sensitive nerve fibers of the retina. Since there are rarely any symptoms in the early stages of the disease, it is important that people get regular eye examinations by qualified professionals. Screening for glaucoma is usually performed as part of a standard eye examination performed by ophthalmologists and optometrists Although intraocular pressure is only one of the major risk factors for glaucoma, lowering it via various pharmaceuticals and/or surgical techniques is currently the mainstay of glaucoma treatment. And while there is no “cure” for glaucoma, medication and surgery can help stop or slow the progression of the disease. Pharmacologically, the treatment of glaucoma is aimed at reducing intraocular pressure by either improving aqueous outflow or reducing the production of aqueous fluid, or both. Drugs that enhance aqueous outflow include the prostaglandin analogs, non-selective sympathomimetics, and cholinergic agonists. Drugs that decrease the production of aqueous humor include the topical beta-blockers and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Alpha2-agonists have a dual mechanism, decreasing aqueous production and increasing trabecular outflow. 32
