October 2015 Words from the Editor, Debbie Kokil/Little Jennie Appleseed What a year for apples, cucumbers, and cranberries. Thank you to the picture taker for allowing myself and my mother to share in the abundance of apples on the two trees in her front yard. We were even blessed with fancy coffee and a slice of apple pie/crumble. Thank you! This was the best summer ever! I enjoyed the weather, the people, working at Lilac Resort, leisurely being able to put together the August and September newsletters, working in my garden, picking apples, swimming in the pool, visiting with friends and family, babysitting my granddaughter, and sitting on my deck doing absolutely nothing! What did you do this summer? Happy Fall! Let’s hope it is a warm Winter an early Spring and back to Summer real soon!

October 2015 To all the drivers who are so courteous on Paradise Road!! I appreciate your pulling over while passing the many walkers from the Village and allowing us to exercise and train safely on a narrow road. We try to share the road and to keep going without having to step off the pavement onto very uneven ground. As walkers we must also ensure that we are monitoring traffic and if need be we are prepared to step off. I look forward to waving a big "thanks" to you while out on Paradise Road. My goal has been to improve my health by walking and I am thankful to have been able to progress in a fitness program from a slow walker to a "Wogger" (walker/ jogger). I started out a little over a year ago after back surgery and was barely able to walk to the Recycling area and back home. By December I was fit enough to compete in my first large Marathon in Loma Linda, California where I raced with 2,000 other walkers/ runners and placed third wearing bib #1437. I received two medals for my efforts and will continue to train for future competitions. Not everyone is going to take walking as seriously as I do, but a short walk every day can make a big difference in how we feel physically and emotionally.

Let's Promote Walking for Fitness in Paradise!

Welcome New Residents to Paradise Village Flory Sikora - 9 Village Drive - moved from Edmonton, Alberta on June 23, 2015. With the help of her sisters and grandchildren, Flory has been busily painting and doing some small renos to her new home. A fine job has been done. Flory is a native of Manitoba and decided, upon retirement, to return East. She loves the convenience of Winnipeg being so close to Paradise Village. She finds the residents very friendly and knows she has made the right choice and is going to be very happy here. I outlined all the activities that take place throughout the year and I'm sure we will see Flory at some of the events. She retired as a Receptionist which she held for many years. She does some reading and does a bit of work on the computer. Flory has 2 children and 4 grandchildren whom she is very proud of. At this time I would again like to welcome you to Paradise Village and hopefully we will see you at our next big event - The Pig and Corn Roast. Walter & Pat Panych - 30 Sunset Drive - moved from Prawda on September 1, 2015. They had extensive renovations done to their home before moving. It is beautiful. Had a great visit with Walter and Pat. Went over all the events and activities that are offered in the Park. They thoroughly enjoyed the annual pork and corn roast and looking forward to some of the other potlucks and dinners in the future. They are both semi-retired. Walter was a beef cattle farmer and now only helps his son as required. Pat works one day a week in the RM office of Reynolds, plus babysitting grandchildren when needed. Pat's interests include swimming and walking. Walter is a TV man, loves fishing and collecting antiques. They have 3 children and 5 grandchildren, who all live close-bye. Once again thank you for the great visit and welcome to beautiful Paradise Village. Looking forward to seeing you at some of the functions and our General Meetings where you can meet new friends. 8

“Little Button Buck” In the summer of 1986 there was a Winnipeg Free Press article about an orphaned young deer that took up residence at Cottonwood Golf Course. The story went on to say that the doe was killed by a vehicle near the golf course and that the young deer had “adopted” the course as its home. We were living in Winnipeg and decided to take a ride to try to see the little thing.

51 St. Gerard Street

Ste. Anne, MB

Alice Trudeau

We arrived at Cottonwood and inquired where we could find it, were told just walk between the first and second fairways and the deer will find you. Sure enough while walking between the fairways out from the bush comes this little deer just a running and bleating. As it neared us I knelt down to welcome it. It ran up to me and nuzzled my face just as a pet dog would do! It turned out to be a button buck, a young male deer with nubs of its antlers starting to grow on its head. After Carole took a few photos we left and made our way home.

It was an incredible experience to say the least. I had hunted for many years and as hunting season drew near something changed inside me and I ended up selling all my firearms. Since that time with the little button buck I have hunted with a camera. Larry Trush

Paradise Village Singles - September September 7, 2015

As the September long wound down, the singles group gathered at the home of Steve and Ursula. A perfect autumn day was enjoyed on the back deck where flowers still flourished in their summer splendour. There was a birthday to be recognized for sure but the celebrant was absent. * Thus we lavished over three cakes; included was a luscious cheese cake which disappeared in a hurry. If you had a sweet tooth it was Paradise! Some of us decided to attend the Cavalia Show in late Sept. or early Oct. Ticket information is on the web site www.cavalia.net. This presentation is running till mid Oct.

Enjoying the lovely outdoors

DIABETES TYPE 2

Submitted by Barb Prior

During digestion, food is broken down into various sugar molecules, including glucose - the body's main source of energy. The pancreas releases insulin which keeps the glucose in the blood at safe levels. In people with diabetes, the system isn't working & the glucose levels can become too high - hyperglycemia - or too low - hypoglycemia. More than 25% of North Americans over the age of 65 years have Type 2 Diabetes. Many of the symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes can be so mild that you don't notice them. Diabetes is usually diagnosed when the sugar levels in the blood are too high. Symptoms of Hyperglycemia include: Being very thirsty Frequent urination Blurred vision Irritability Numbness or tingling of the hands or feet Wounds that don't heal Reoccurring yeast infections

Symptoms of Hypoglycemia include: Dizziness or feeling light-headed Hunger Confusion Sweating Anxiety Fatigue

People whose diabetes isn't properly managed are at risk for serious complications such as hearing loss, vision problems, cognitive impairment and mobility difficulties. Most of these are caused by high blood sugars. Vision: Prolonged high blood sugars can damage the blood vessels of the retina, causing them to break and leak blood into the eye, which clouds or obscures vision. This condition known as diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults. If caught early it may be treatable with laser surgery. Regular eye exams are important to detect signs of this condition. If you are newly diagnosed with diabetes be sure to inform your eye doctor at your next appointment. Hearing Loss: Hearing loss is twice as prevalent among seniors with diabetes. Overtime, high glucose levels can damage the small blood vessels and nerves inside the ear. Seniors account for the majority of patients with diabetic related hearing loss. Hearing loss is irreversible. Cognitive Impairment: According to a study done in the New England Journal of Medicine, hyperglycemia may increase a person's risk for dementia. This study done mainly on animals suggests high glucose causes damage to the neurons in the brain that affects cognition and memory. Mobility Issues: Many seniors already cope with bone and joint problems (arthritis) which can make getting around difficult. At least 50% of people with diabetes develop neuropathy, or nerve damage, in their feet. They typically feel numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the feet. They also have a reduced ability to feel pain. If they are unaware of wounds or lacerations on their feet, they may become infected and could lead to gangrene, tissue death and/or amputation. Hypoglycemia can happen suddenly. It is usually mild and easily treated quickly by eating or drinking a small amount of glucose rich foods such as 4 oz of fruit juice, 1tbsp of sugar or honey. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can cause confusion, clumsiness, or fainting. Severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma and death. Hypoglycemia is usually the result of taking your diabetic medication and then skipping the meal. It can also result from extended periods of physical activity. Heavy drinking on an empty stomach can also cause hypoglycemia. Drinking alcoholic beverages is best done in moderation with the ingestion of food to slow the absorption of the alcohol. People who use insulin or oral diabetic medication should always be prepared to treat fluctuations in their blood glucose levels. They should also educate family and friends on how to help if problems occur. 24

October 2015

Paradise Village Christian Fellowship Church Here we are in Autumn: where has the year flown? Every season has it’s unique beauty and challenges, but there is no time like fall to drive through the country on a sunny day and feast your eyes on the beautiful colours of the trees. And yet, too soon, those same leaves fall, and we spend hours raking them, and thinking, “Winter’s on the way!” Many of us are in what we might call, the “autumn days” of our lives, and we are faced with a choice: how shall we respond to the changing “seasons” of our life? There may be a temptation to react pessimistically: “I can’t do (or go, or be, or…) what I used to do…” Or to lament, “This old body!”: ‘What works hurts! And what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work!’” Or, we may decide, in spite of all the “falling leaves” and the grim fact that “winter is coming,” we are going to make the most of today and endeavour to be a blessing to those around us...and God will help us if we are willing. Here is a promise from the Bible to ponder (and receive): “I will be your God throughout your lifetime - until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you (be your saviour)” (Isaiah 46:4 New Living Translation). Come worship with us on Sundays at 10 A.M. at the Recreation Center in Paradise Village. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and Fellowship following the Service. If anyone has special prayer requests please call the President, Dennis Hall.

MENS Breakfast Fellowship: 2nd Monday of each month (10 a.m. at various restaurants) rides can be arranged. For details give Dennis a call at 204-422-9870. From the Tab Man…..Frank Leys With the help of the residents, we donated $191.00 to the “Tabs for Wheelchairs” program. All Pop Cans, Beer Cans, and the Tabs (remember to separate tabs) can now be dropped off in the Recreation Center’s Recycle Bins located by the Barbeques by the Workshop. Plastic Pop Bottles and Water Bottles are also accepted with caps removed. We still collect Campbell's food labels from soup and vegetables. They must be Campbell’s products. Drop them off along with your tabs & cans. We only recycle aluminum drink cans (pop and beer) and beer bottles.

“TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS” HISTORY 1998 - 2015 (Brief Summary of the last 17 years) Holy Cross School started saving tabs in the spring of 1998. We started saving the tabs off the cans and not the whole can itself because cans can be very dirty and need a great deal of storage space. Note: It is important to know that the Manitoba Government does supply wheelchairs but does not supply the sport wheelchairs. By the fall of 1998 we had another seven other schools saving with us. We gave our first specialized wheelchair (a tilt-in-space wheelchair) to a little girl named Carley in the spring of 2000. Her wheelchair had many “bells and whistles.” She was a little 5 year old with cerebral palsy who needed a specialized wheelchair to go to kindergarten in the fall. Several television stations and the Winnipeg Free Press and community newspapers covered the story on Carley. When this happened we were bombarded with phone calls from schools, businesses/companies, and many individuals asking if they could be part of the program. Over the years the Tab for Wheelchairs program has grown tremendously because of this media coverage. Most of the 16 recipients in the last 17 years were chosen by the Rehabilitation Centre for Children on Wellington Crescent in Winnipeg. Our last recipient was Bryce in May 2015 who has cerebral palsy. Altogether we have given 6 sport wheelchairs and 10 specialized wheelchairs. Every May we bring all of our tabs to Western Scrap Metal Co. in Winnipeg and they in turn give us about 60 cents per pound. This enables us to purchase the wheelchairs. Reimer Express Lines Ltd. has transported all of our tabs for free since the very beginning and St. Boniface Bag has also supplied us with bags free of charge.

TAB INFORMATION - There are approximately 1500 tabs in a pound. To purchase a $6000 wheelchair we need: approximately 14 million tabs which equals to about 9500 lbs. To purchase a $10,000 wheelchair we need: approximately 24 million tabs which equals to about 16,000 lbs.

We are having a “Welcome Night” on Oct. 13th and are inviting all Square Dance clubs to come and help us celebrate our newly renovated “digs”. Looking ahead you don’t want to miss our Hobo Night which will be held on Nov. 17 th along with our famous “Hobo Stew”. “Unknown” Co-Chair Presidents photo) Larry Trush

On August 27th, fourteen of us went for a ride on the Prairie Dog Central. We caught the train @11:00 am. Once arriving at our destination we went by school bus to the Hitch'n Post for lunch, which was cooked by volunteers, and it was delicious! There were lots of antiques to look at in the hall and outside there were a number of vintage cars to look at too. I would recommend this trip to any one! One couple rode in the engine car on the way back. It was really something! We arrived back at the station @ 2:30 pm. This was an enjoyable outing! In the group picture you can see there's only twelve of us….two gentlemen missed the photo "duty called.” Thank you. Myrna

Pharmacie Seine Ste-Anne 170-142 avenue Centrale 204-422-8226 A reminder that we offer free delivery of prescriptions and pharmacy supplies to Paradise Village.

Atrial fibrillation treatment in older adults: warfarin versus the newer agents Atrial fibrillation is highly prevalent in older adults and prevalence increases with age, occurring in 1.5% of those 60-70 years, and 10% of those > 80 years.1 Patients with atrial fibrillation are at a 4-5 times increased risk for stroke, and strokes with atrial fibrillation are more severe and disabling.1 Anticoagulation can help reduce the risk of stroke due to atrial fibrillation, and most older adults will be indicated for anticoagulation given their advanced age and increased prevalence of multiple disease states. Available anticoagulants include warfarin, and the newer agents, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, and apixaban. Warfarin: Tried and True - Despite the need for routine INR monitoring, multiple drug interactions, and the need to maintain consistent dietary vitamin K intake that is found in many foods, many patients continue to utilize warfarin. Warfarin has been well studied and shown to be effective, it can be reversed when a patient is bleeding, and is well understood by prescribers and pharmacists. The Newer Anticoagulants - Several newer anticoagulants have been approved to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation by the Food and Drug Administration within the past several years. At present, none of the drugs is known to be reversible if bleeding occurs. All are currently brand-name only and would be expected to have higher drug cost than warfarin. However, they do not require monitoring. 1-Dabigatran (Pradaxa™) is dosed 150mg twice daily or 75mg twice daily for patients with renal disease. Overall bleeding was similar, although rates of gastrointestinal bleeding were higher with dabigatran. This drug is primarily eliminated by the kidney. Older adults are much more susceptible to changes in kidney function. If kidney function declines, the drug can accumulate and bleeding risk increases. 2-Rivaroxaban (Xarelto™) is dosed at 20mg daily for patients with CrCl > 50 mL/min and 15mg daily for patients with CrCl 15-50 mL/min. In trial, rivaroxaban was shown to be non-inferior to warfarin for the primary endpoint of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. Overall bleeding was similar, although rates of gastrointestinal bleeding were higher with rivaroxaban. This drug is eliminated 2/3 by the liver and approximately 1/3 by the kidney. Clinically relevant drug interactions can occur with itraconazole, oral ketoconazole, rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenytoin, and others. The use of drugs such as diltiazem, erythromycin, clarithromycin, and verapamil with rivaroxaban can also become relevant drug interactions if a patient also has reduced kidney function, since that would impair elimination via two pathways. 3-Apixaban (Eliquis™) is dose at 5mg twice daily, and dose reduced to 2.5mg twice daily for patients who have at least 2 of the 3 following characteristics: age ≥ 80 years, weight ≤ 60 kg, and serum creatinine ≥ 1.5 mg/dL. The dosing should also be reduced to 2.5mg twice daily when used with ketoconazole, itraconazole , clarithromycin. It should not be used with rifampin, carbamazepine, phenytoin. In trial, apixaban was shown to be superior to warfarin for the primary endpoint of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation and had lower risk of bleeding compared to warfarin. The most important characteristic of this drug in the older adult is that it has an indicated dose for older patients who also have lower weight or elevated serum creatinine. Warfarin or a newer agent? - The most recent atrial fibrillation guidelines recommend warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban for as options for patients who need anticoagulation. A newer agent is recommended as preferred for patients who cannot maintain a therapeutic INR. The new agents offer significant flexibility and convenience, but warfarin is still appropriate and preferred for many older adults.

A family brings their frail, elderly mother to a nursing home and leaves her, hoping she will be well cared for. The next morning, the nurses bathe her, feed her a tasty breakfast, and set her in a chair at a window overlooking a lovely flower garden. She seems OK, but after a while she slowly starts to fall over sideways in her chair. Two attentive nurses immediately rush up to catch her and straighten her up. Again she seems OK, but after a while she starts to tilt to the other side. The nurses rush back and once more bring her back upright. This goes on all morning. Later the family arrives to see how the old woman is adjusting to her new home. "So Ma, how is it here? Are they treating you all right?" They ask. "It's pretty nice," she replies. "Except they won't let me pass gas."
