Quiet Hour Ministries Board Chairman Ralph S. Watts, Jr.

Andy Crouch, executive editor of Christianity Today, explains the quote that follows by saying, “I do not often meet Christians so passionate about evangelism that they question the need for doing justice. I am much more likely to meet Christians so passionate about justice that they question the need for evangelism.” Now for his quote: “Meeting the physical needs of the poor wins attention and affirmation from a watching world. Naming the spiritual poverty of a world enthralled to false gods provokes defensiveness and derision from those who do not even believe there is a god … Our secular neighbors care, many like never before, about relieving human need—and more of them than ever before are indifferent or hostile to the idea that Jesus is the way, the truth, the life and the one who meets the deepest human need. In short, working for justice is cool. Proclaiming the gospel is not” (Andy Crouch, Playing God, InterVarsity Press, 2013, p. 82). Cool or not, Quiet Hour Ministries (QHM) is unapologetically committed to both proclaiming the gospel and working for justice to relieve human suffering. For this reason, I am very excited about my new role with QHM. I look forward to partnering with you as together we share the good news and (800) 900-9021 |

address human need. This dual calling of service and evangelism was driven home for me at our Ambassadors of Hope weekend in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I fought the impulse to stand up and shout “Hallelujah!” as I listened to the stories of evangelism where thousands of people accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and were baptized. I fought the tears as I watched the television program, “Missions Today,” which told the story of the QHM evangelism mission trip to Costa Rica. Just on that trip, our team members built buildings, conducted evangelistic series, operated a medical clinic and ministered in a tangible and lifetransforming way to a single mom and her six children. If you haven’t already, you’ve got to watch every episode of “Missions Today” (www.missionstoday.tv)! See for yourself the difference your support makes for thousands of God’s children around the world. Every dollar you invest in this ministry is used for both proclamation and compassion. Now that’s cool! 

Wow! I really love the new program, “Missions Today.” I’ve heard mission stories before, but it is very inspiring to actually see how God is at work in the world right now. I was especially moved by the personal comments of the mission team members as their lives were changed as well. I can hardly wait to see where “Missions Today” is going next!

MAZATENANGO, GUATEMALA, IS LOCATED 165 kilometers from the capitol, Guatemala City. It has warm temperatures all the time and a population of 88,340.

ď ž QHM mission team members from Southern Adventist University working on the new Mazatenango church.

Three years ago, we drew up a growth plan for the Seventhday Adventist Church in this city. Mazatenango hosts the South Guatemala Mission and only had two organized churches. We launched the plan by sending missionary couples to start small groups across the city. After four years of effort, now we have seven organized churches. Later, as part of this growth strategy, we invited Quiet Hour Ministries to help us with evangelism and building chapels. This past February, we were greatly blessed with the arrival (800) 900-9021 |

of 22 people, volunteers from Southern Adventist University, led by Jim Neergaard from QHM. By word and example, Jim motivated the young preachers to give the best of themselves, the clinic team to serve as Jesus did and the team of builders to brave the heat and rain to build a house of worship. Five evangelism teams, supported by members of our local churches, preached the present truth to hundreds of people who gathered at our meetings. Upon completion of this mission outreach, praise God, we baptized 41 people! Also 565 people were blessed in the clinics with medical consultation and basic treatments. And a chapel was started in the Villa Linda neighborhood, which is being completed in just the next couple weeks! Then, from July 10-20, came another QHM team of volunteers from the Korean Adventist Church in Loma Linda, California. Team leader Natalie Furman and Pastors Paul and Kim were a great help, coordinating the medical missionary work. This time, 1,079 people were treated in optical and dental clinics! I know the local community was deeply grateful for this valuable help. The team also visited an

orphanage for girls, bringing hope and gifts to better their quality of life. Evangelistic teams spread the Word of God and as a result, 36 people were baptized! And the team of builders began building a chapel in the neighborhood of Colony Bilbao, which is currently being finalized. It will have a capacity of 150 people and be a major blessing. Dear friends of Quiet Hour Ministries, thank you very much for your dedication and effort! You have been angels in Mazatenango. You make it possible to bring light to so many new places and hope to people who have never known it before. May Heaven richly reward you! A VISION FOR MISSION

by Randy Bates

JOHN WAS GIVEN ONE, SO WAS PETER. THROUGH THE AGES, GOD HAS given them to many. A vision. A dream about what the future might be. Or a calling that God was encouraging. thousands were added to their number daily. That’s why we’re continuing to seek new ways to improve and better follow Jesus’ method. Let me share with you just three: First, we are asking multiple associate speakers to increase our reach. Second, we will continue personally serving to meet people’s needs before sharing the gospel message, though that presentation is also as compelling as possible. And third, we will progress under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Let me expand a bit on those three items. Quiet Hour Ministries is moving from a singular president/speaker to an associate speaker model. As God uses many people to speak for Him, we will be using multiple voices to speak for us. In our last issue of this magazine we introduced Karl Haffner as our first associate speaker. In the months ahead, more associate speakers will be announced. With our new model, we can cover more ground more quickly—and even be in two places at once! Also, we believe that having multiple speakers allows us opportunities to reach a more diverse range of age, gender and culture than a single speaker does. Most importantly, through these multiple voices, many more people will have the opportunity to hear that Jesus loves them. While we will continue to meet the needs of people through medical, dental and optical clinics, church construction, children’s programs and family and health talks, the simple message of Jesus’ love is the most compelling part of the gospel message. In our continuing drive to better share the gospel, we have launched the development of a new sermon series. This new international series will be designed to be easily understood by diverse audiences. It will be focused on Jesus, His love and the grace He offers to all.

 In 2015 we will develop a new international sermon series focused on Jesus, His love and the grace He offers to all.

Seventy-seven years ago, God impressed J.L. Tucker with the idea of outreach via radio. Over the years, God’s design for this ministry has been pursued in a variety of ways as we follow His leading. For the future, we have a simple, yet inspiring goal: to be an example of the model Jesus gave. For several years, we have focused on using Jesus’ method of spreading the gospel. His method was personal, face to face. It began with meeting people’s needs and demonstrating God’s love for them. Next, He introduced them to the gospel message in simple, compelling ways. Only then did He invite them to follow Him. Before He left this earth, Jesus commissioned His disciples to go and preach the gospel to all nations. He also told His disciples to wait until they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit before they left Jerusalem. When they followed His counsel, ECHOES

2015 Vision It will be easy to deliver, as our method of sharing the gospel is through empowering lay people on short-term mission trips. It will also be simple to use. We have noticed that some mission team members find it challenging to work with unfamiliar equipment, or resolve compatibility differences. We want to remove any difficulties. By taking advantage of newer technology, we will be able to not only make sharing the gospel easier for our team members but lower the cost of equipment. Another added bonus is that the new system will be smaller, lighter and easier to pack for international travel. Through these improvements, we believe even more mission team members will experience the incomparable joy of being used by the Holy Spirit to help someone else know that Jesus loves them. Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples is the most important improvement we have planned for the future. We want to be certain that every mission outreach is powered by the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, that is how lives are changed. When the disciples went out in the power of the Holy Spirit, thousands were brought into a saving knowledge of Jesus. While this has been a vital component throughout our history, we now want to be even more deliberate in helping our team

members recognize and receive the Holy Spirit. Each QHM mission team member will have multiple opportunities on the trip to intentionally open their lives to the Lord, seeking to be ready for any opportunity to share the gospel. The vision for our future at QHM is simple, follow the model Jesus gave. To follow this model, we are commissioning multiple associate speakers to reach a broader group of people. We will continue meeting the needs of people and then presenting the simple gospel message through easy-to-use technology. And we will go forward in the power of the Holy Spirit. Imagine the impact of just these three items! Through multiple associate speakers, there are more opportunities to bring in the people who will take the gospel wider and farther. Through simpler content and delivery, more mission team members will be able to share the gospel, which significantly increases the number of lives touched. Lastly, through the power of the Holy Spirit every effort will be multiplied, reaching people even more effectively. I firmly believe that through these three items, we will provide a life-changing mission trip experience that makes a demonstrated, lasting difference.

 Through our hundreds of mission team members, many more people will have the opportunity to hear that Jesus loves them!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR UPCOMING 2015 MISSION TRIPS

by Jim Neergaard

AS ELDER CANTANE VISITED WITH me in my office, he had a special burden on his heart. The area where he is the Seventh-day Adventist Church president, the Central Philippine Union (CPU), was still suffering as a result of super typhoon Haiyan. So a plan was devised. Quiet Hour Ministries will organize a mission trip in April 2015 to an area still heavily damaged by Haiyan and in need of hearing God’s saving grace. On their end, CPU will identify a group of Adventist university students to work preparing the spiritual soil for our evangelistic meetings, serve as translators or speakers during the meetings. They’ll also nurture the newly baptized and follow up with interests. Those joining this mission trip will have the unique opportunity of not only sharing the good news to hearts still questioning why disasters happen, but also to have a special part in working with students as they rebound from a national and, in many instances, a personal tragedy. Then in August we have a very special mission trip to the Malamulo hospital in Malawi. This historic Adventist hospital is inviting Bill and Jackie

Tucker to return for evangelism for the first time since 2011. During the Tuckers’ last visit, Jackie preached her own series of meetings about a half hour’s drive from the hospital. This year, Jackie will return to that same church to preach another series. But instead of it being a barely standing temporary shelter, this time it will be a new sturdy chapel, completed thanks to your gifts for new chapels. And while the mission team is present, the new church will be dedicated to God and His worship. Plus team members will stay on the Malamulo hospital compound and experience the daily mission service in that setting. One final trip I should mention is to Santa Elena, Guatemala, in March. Located in the less-developed northern part of the country, our team members will minister not only to the community’s spiritual needs, but also to their physical needs. The team’s primary activities will be preaching in nightly evangelistic meetings, having programs for the kids and also helping with the construction of a new church. However, nearby towns and villages don’t always have a clean drinking water supply. An Adventist supporting ministry, Water for Life, drills wells for these needy communities. Through a special partnership, our mission team members, mostly academy students, will take part in a well-drilling project. These young people will help provide the physical water of life, but even more importantly the Water of Life for eternity.  Jim Neergaard is executive director for international evangelism at Quiet Hour Ministries.

WE SEE GOD MOVING

A REPORT FROM OUR FIJI EVANGELISM MISSION TRIP by Mary Hilde

Blinking a few times, I opened my eyes and glanced at the ceiling and then at the drab curtains covering a barred window and humid breeze.

It was oddly nostalgic walking through a part of my dad’s history, especially since we were able to visit the old Fulton College campus at one point. Fiji is lush and beautiful like many tropical islands. But Fijians seem just a little more friendly with their constant “Bula!” greetings and warm smiles for us strangers. Away from the resorts, Fijian life is primitive. People live in hut-like structures with wood floors and tin siding and roofs. Homes are usually one room with everyone crammed inside. In some of the more remote locations, bathroom facilities are centrally located in the village and consist of a hole with a seat built around it. Fortunately for us we stayed at the Trans-Pacific Union (TPU) headquarters. So we had fully-enclosed lodging with inside bathrooms and running water. In fact, the TPU employees literally vacated their homes so our team could stay in them! Our volunteer group was a neat mix of folks from all over the United States. And Shirley Ford, our mission team leader, was a hoot. We all worked well together and enjoyed one another’s company. After fabulous breakfasts prepared by the local ladies, one of our team members gave the morning devotion. Then we would head to our work sites, which were either the traveling medical clinic or the chapel construction project. I didn’t get a chance to help in the clinics but I heard many beautiful stories from the work being done there. People who couldn’t see well enough to read were given glasses in the eye clinics and now

Where was I? My mind sprinted. Moments later it came to me. I was on a Quiet Hour Mission Trip in Fiji! Traveling has always been a necessity for me. Not quite as important as air and water. But a close third in the lineup. So necessary in fact that each year, for several years, I schemed and saved so that for two months every summer, my husband Shane and I could travel the world. While most people were buying cars and houses, we were buying airline tickets and hotel rooms. Maybe others can relate with the phenomenon of waking up and momentarily not knowing where they are, due to being in a new bed so often. For me, it had happened rather frequently over the years, so I wasn’t too surprised to realize I was in Fiji. A couple of things marked this trip as unique for me. It was the 40th country I had visited. But also Shane and I had never been on a mission trip together. It was actually Shane’s first-ever mission trip (I had been on a few before). So that gave this particular trip newness, because instead of just traveling for the sake of seeing the world, we were doing something specifically for the Lord. My dad is from Samoa but left home to attend Fiji’s Fulton College back in the 1960s. So I also felt I was going back to my island roots. ECHOES

could read their Bibles. And hundreds of patients were given advice and treatment in the medical and dental clinics. The construction project was a little more homespun than I was expecting. Everything—and I mean everything—was done by hand, from bending rebar to mixing concrete to carrying supplies down a big hill to the construction site. The locals tolerated our modern-day mindset. They even accepted that I was a female carrying supplies down the hill, when that was obviously a guy’s job. They just shook their heads, smiled and climbed the trees to pluck us coconuts, which they neatly chopped open for us to enjoy the coconut water. Beyond the makeshift construction techniques, seeing how other people live in general was an interesting experience. One reason I enjoy traveling is that it gives me a reality check and I become intensely grateful for a warm, clean shower, for a bed and grocery stores with huge selection. Things I wouldn’t think twice about until I have to dump cold buckets of water on my head for a shower, or sleep on a concrete floor, or only have a choice between chips and unidentifiable food in a grocery store. There is such severe poverty abroad, yet so many generous souls willing to share their meager food and accommodations. It’s as if hospitality was birthed in poverty and often forgotten in first-world situations. Shane and I experienced this great hospitality when we came down with the flu in Fiji. Sick and staring at mold on our ceiling is not how I envisioned my husband and I would spend part of our mission

trip. We were out of commission for a few days. But even then, we experienced the love and generosity of the Fijian ladies. They would prepare us special health potions and teas of lemon, garlic and ginger as well as special fruit plates for nourishment. We were still sick during the final evangelistic meeting, which we knew was powerful, as we could hear portions of it from our bedroom window. There were 15 people baptized. And many more asked to prepare for baptism. I haven’t put my finger on why folks from other countries seem more receptive to the gospel than in the United States. Why can we baptize 8,000 people through an evangelistic effort overseas, yet only have a couple hundred baptisms all year in an entire conference stateside? Life abroad is hard. Slow. Often desperate. Maybe in poverty God becomes vital to those dependent on Him for their very bread and water. When we got home, we reflected that the Fiji mission trip definitely wasn’t like any other trip or vacation we had ever taken. It was hard, yet rewarding. When we left the TPU compound in Fiji, there were many tears from the locals and our team members. It was an experience that seemed to touch everyone deeply. In the end, going on a mission trip is not for adventure’s sake. It gives life perspective. We see God moving in tangible ways. We create memorable relationships and stumble upon unforgettable miracles. 

PROJECT UPDATES EVERY DAY THERE IS SOMETHING GOING ON AROUND THE WORLD that’s part of Quiet Hour Ministries’ outreach. Whether it’s church construction, gospel workers giving Bible studies or evangelism teams proclaiming Jesus, there are always projects happening that are furthering the Lord’s work. And these projects only happen through your generous support. In an effort to keep you up to date on what’s going on in our worldwide outreach, here’s what’s happened in the various areas of our ministry over the last few months: WORLDWIDE EVANGELISM – Evangelistic meetings were held in the Dominican Republic, Panama and Egypt. Lay volunteers preached and gave health talks to community members, resulting in many baptisms. So far this year more than 2,000 people have been baptized as a result of these evangelistic efforts and many seeds sown for future harvest! CHAPELS AND CONSTRUCTION – Thanks to your generous gifts, mission teams helped build and renovate churches in the Dominican Republic, Panama and Egypt. These much-needed chapels have changed the way locals worship, as they now have adequate structures in which to meet. GOSPEL WORKERS – Local gospel workers prepared the way for the evangelistic series in the Dominican Republic and Egypt. Gospel workers are always crucial in the success of evangelistic meetings, as they break ground in the local communities by going door-to-door and giving Bible studies. BIBLES – Thanks to your gifts, each new believer at our evangelistic meetings in Dominican Republic, Panama and Egypt were given a Bible to read in their own language. You ECHOES

have also supported thousands of Bibles being distributed in Pakistan. CHILDREN’S OUTREACH – Reaching kids with hope and the good news of Jesus’ love is a large part of mission trips. Coupled with each evangelistic meeting in Panama, Dominican Republic and Egypt were outreach programs for kids—which included Bible schools, games, stories, crafts, felts and songs. The kids loved the programs. MUSLIM OUTREACH – Our Muslim outreach workers continued to study with hundreds of people excited to know more about Jesus here in the United States and abroad. Your gifts also contributed to the evangelism mission trip to Egypt in December, where meetings were held in a predominately Muslim village. MEDICAL CLINICS AND EYE CLINICS– Medical, dental and eye clinics were held in Egypt, Panama and Dominican Republic with patients receiving general care as well as much-needed eye glasses and dental exams. People who could not see to read were given glasses and they were thrilled with their new vision.  www.qhministries.org |

HE FOUND US

GOD AT WORK IN A FAMILY BAPTIZED AT OUR 2011 EVANGELISTIC MEETINGS IN BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES I AM CHRISTY VALENDEZ AND MY husband is Jovan Rey Valendez. We have two daughters, 6 years old and 5 months old. I am 28 and my husband is 30. Still fresh in our minds is the goodness of God that He found us and changed us. In 2011, we attended Quiet Hour Ministries evangelistic meetings led by Randy and Rob Steffens at the Bayabas Seventh-day Adventist Church in Baguio City. We were blessed to learn many things from the Bible. Praise God, through this outreach provided by your ministry we were baptized March 19, 2011! Then, the following February, someone introduced us to a program that trains anyone willing to be God’s laborer. We believed God led us there and my husband was trained in the school. After training for three months the school sent us to do our own evangelistic series. My husband preached and I led the children’s programs. By God’s grace, 25 souls were brought to accept Jesus! Soon after, my husband was invited to be a Bible worker in Ilo Ilo City. As we worked there over the next nine months, we thank God that 12 more people gave their hearts to Him! In February, 2013 we were sent to Bacolod. Our team did four children’s programs and two evangelistic series. By God’s great love, more than 100 souls accepted Jesus Christ! Bukidnon, to do groundbreaking work. My husband did house-to-house visitation and gave Bible studies. I gave children’s programs in some local schools. By God’s grace, 31 souls accepted Jesus! Then we were sent to Tarlac where my husband again worked giving Bible studies. Just this year 105 souls have been baptized. Praise the Lord! Now we are here in Batab doing ground work preparation for another evangelistic series. My husband is giving Bible studies and I am also leading children’s programs. I write this to you because we want to extend our thanks to God that you came to Baguio City, sharing God’s love. We praise God because He led us there to hear His words. He has led us every day after that. And everything we are now is just a sample of His love. He is coming soon and I am glad He wants us to be part of His kingdom! Thank you so much! I know God will bless your ministry as you reach people in many different places around the world! 

HE COULD USE ME

A MISSION TEAM LEADER TESTIMONY

by Shirley Mercedes Ford

IN THE SUMMER OF 2013, I WENT on a Quiet Hour Ministries (QHM) mission trip to Honduras with my church family. Our pastor, who was the team leader, was very busy so he asked me to be co-leader with him. I went everywhere the team leader went and took numerous mental notes and received hands-on, behind the scenes training. We had some situations that were very delicate. But with prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit everything turned out great. Then earlier this year I was asked to lead a team in Panama and so began my work as a full-fledged team leader. I’ve grown so much through this experience of being a team leader. Being an incredibly shy person, I do not like to be called upon to speak in public but prefer to work in the background. Thinking that a team leader worked behind the team members, I was excited to take on this work. Then during the QHM team leader training seminar I was told that local people in the field will call on you to speak. And that is when I started praying! Being a team leader has caused me to cry out to God so often for help. I have had to speak

 The first QHM mission team Shirley led was this group from Texas that served in Panama.

on a few occasions at the spur of the moment. And not knowing what to say, I have felt like I was going to faint. I have prayed and asked God to glorify His name through me and when I am finished speaking sometimes I wonder, “Who was that that just spoke?” It definitely was not me. I have learned that if God asks you to do something, you do it without worry because He will help you. He asked me to lead mission teams not because I have great ability but because He felt He could use me. It is definitely not about me and how I feel, it is about Him and doing His will to His liking. God has blessed me so much so that this last July I did my first evangelistic series. I spoke (without fear!) for five nights in General Santos, Philippines. Praise His holy name! The greatest blessing from working in the mission field is that I see God at work more clearly than when I work at home. Many times overseas we’ve had to turn to God to help us because there’s no other option. And He always comes through!  Shirley Mercedes Ford is a college professor and lives in Southern California with her daughter and parents. She has now led multiple mission trips with Quiet Hour Ministries.

TO BE OF SERVICE TO GOD A SPECIAL MISSION TEAM MEMBER TESTIMONY

by Brian and Teri Kotch

A FEW YEARS AGO WE DECIDED to take each of our grandchildren on a trip to celebrate their high school graduations. Our first graduating grandchild went to Hawaii with us. While that was a delightful vacation and special one-on-one bonding time with our granddaughter, we realized it was not showing her much about our desire to be of service to God. Or really how people in other cultures live. Learning from that experience, the next graduating grandchild went with us on our first Quiet Hour Ministries mission trip, which was to Ecuador in 2013. What a wonderful difference between vacation and mission work!

 Brian and Teri (standing center and right) assisting in the children’s program during our 2013 evangelistic meetings in Ecuador.

We were not let down. The Fijian locals welcomed us with such warmth and we received a special blessing from their kindness and hospitality. We had a lot to share when we returned home and what a joy it was to relate our mission experiences to others. Many people commented that they couldn’t possibly afford going on a mission trip. We reply that God always provides a way, as we respond to His call to go into all the world. Small monthly savings grow over time and fundraising can be done privately or as a church project. Plus the benefits to answering Jesus’ Great Commission are lifelong! These two trips with Quiet Hour Ministries have opened our minds to a bigger appreciation of the work God is doing all over His world. It is so encouraging to see, as they work sideby-side with us, how diligent the local people are in saving souls. We are already scoping out locations for our 2015 mission trip and can’t wait to take our other grandchildren when they graduate! 

 Brian and Teri (front row, sixth and seventh from left) with the Fiji mission team.

Our granddaughter not only got to see another country, but participated in the dental clinic and children’s outreach program. She also had the opportunity to work with other God-serving young people. We saw a change in her on that trip and her interest in God was awakened. After our first experience, we were excited to go on our second mission trip, even though we didn’t have a graduating grandchild to take! So this past July we were off to Fiji. Working at the construction site and clinics and meeting new kids at the children’s outreach was something we very much looked forward to. ECHOES

REAL LIVES, CHANGED FOREVER

THE IMPACT YOU MADE IN THE MISSION FIELD OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE LORD has used you to make a real difference in the mission field. Whether you’re a mission team member, a donor or a prayer warrior, God has multiplied what you’ve given to bless thousands of people in 11 countries!

HERE’S WHAT YOU’VE MADE POSSIBLE IN 2014:  More than 50,000 people reached for Christ worldwide  Over 1,600 people baptized  14 chapels built  More than 6,500 people treated in mission field clinics  An evangelistic meeting site in Santa Cruz, Philippines, where more than 500 people were baptized!

 Over 200 young people involved as evangelism team members  34 local gospel workers giving Bible studies in support of our evangelistic meetings

Take for example the Tonga church you helped build. By a miracle it was completed right when it needed to be, despite considerable challenges. A congregation that had far outgrown the dilapidated shack they’d been meeting in is today worshipping in a simple, sturdy church with room for everyone! Or there’s Nelvin, one of 22 prisoners baptized through the outreach you provided in Santa Cruz, Philippines. As the baptismal pool was filled by hand in the city jail, Nelvin, grinning ear to ear, stepped forward to give his life to Christ. Isabella is an orphan in Costa Rica. The mission team you sent there visited her and the other children at her orphanage. Thanks to you they brought her gifts of urgently-needed daily goods. And they shared with Isabella about Jesus, bringing a gospel truth she’d never heard before! God is at work through you. We’ve been honored to partner with you in sharing His saving grace around the world over the past year. And we know that even greater things are in store! Thank you for your prayers and partnership. Your worldwide impact is tremendous, measured in the many real lives you’ve changed forever. 

However, these numbers don’t even come close to telling the whole story. For each and every figure above, there’s a powerful testimony of Christ working in the hearts of real people.

 Our Tonga mission team worked throughout the night to finish the new church you provided in Tongatapu.
