Transforming QCCC for the Future
PRESIDENT'S LETTER
A Message from the President The Board of Directors and the Strategic Planning Committee would like to thank you, our Members, for participating in the dialogue about our proposed master facilities plan. The 366 Members who voted represent the highest number ever in the history of QCCC. Support of the proposed plan by 69 percent of those voting gives us the green light to initiate the transformation of our Club for both near and long-term success. You have made the critical decision to invest in the future of Quail Creek Country Club. The implementation of this plan will make us one of the very best clubs in southwest Florida. Our new facilities will set a standard of excellence, enhance enjoyment of the Club for our current Members and drive Membership growth. There was significant Member interest and engagement throughout the two-year planning process, and we appreciate your support and involvement. Over 350 of you attended our February 27 Member Informational Meeting, and 315 of you took the time to attend one of our 14 Member Input Sessions. Your questions, insight and suggestions all helped improve our plan and will contribute to its success. Throughout the process, we welcomed views that challenged our thinking. Understandably, there was a range of opinions on the merits of the plan, and we expected that. We hope we can move past any differences and come together in the spirit of making our Club the best that it can be. Special thanks go to our Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, Hedy Whitney, and her very able and extremely dedicated team, including our external advisors. Over the last two years, countless hours were spent bringing this plan to fruition. Don Hunter and his team were integral to the process and we thank them. Also, the efforts of Kathy Forte and Wendy Felsinger in communicating the vision and scope of the project were invaluable. There are many others – both Members and Staff - who made significant contributions to the process, and we recognize them as well. We will now move on to the financing stage and will keep you informed. Upon completion of the project, we will have something of which we can be extremely proud. We will have transformed our Club into being one of the premier country clubs in the area. The support of our entire Membership will be critical as we go through the upcoming transition and see our vision become reality. Once again, thank you. We should all be proud of what we have accomplished together. Jim Clayton

QCCC FACILITIES PLAN
Making our Vision a Reality Approval by Members at the March 26 Annual Meeting marked the culmination of a two-year-plus effort to develop a master facilities plan for Quail Creek Country Club. The Club can now proceed to execute the plan. Near-term actions include final negotiations to obtain financing, completing design and engineering work, and beginning the permit process. The plan calls for construction in two phases over 14 months, as outlined on page 5.
The sports and fitness center as viewed from the east.
QCCC will be transformed by the plan's capital improvements, the centerpiece of which is an integrated sports and fitness center that will be unique in southwest Florida. The overall concept will strongly position the Club for a more positive Member experience and improve our ability to attract new Members well into the future.
Vision Our vision is to enable our Members to play better and longer at whatever sport or activity they choose, while continuing to serve as a hub for their social interactions and friendships.
Strategic Priorities Transform our aging capital assets in a way that achieves high levels of Member satisfaction and attracts new Members. Offer a full range of amenities, activities and events that address the diverse needs and interests of both current and future Members and positions us on the leading edge of marketplace trends.

Ensure the long-term financial stability of our Club by differentiating ourselves from the competition, thereby improving our ability to reach our target Membership levels. 4
Project Timeline Summer 2018 Detailed submission of the costing of the project by contractors/ subcontractors. Conclude negotiations with potential lenders. A construction loan may be used during the construction period after which the construction loan would be converted into a long-term mortgage. The design, engineering and permit process will begin, with a target of construction starting in mid-fall 2018. Start conversion of the current Golf Pro Shop into a temporary area for fitness operations. Secure temporary space for the Golf & Tennis Pro Shops.
Mid-Fall 2018 – Summer 2019 Demolish existing tennis and fitness buildings. Build an integrated sports and fitness center, with a Cart Barn and new entryway. (Retain the existing pool.) Create space to extend the Driving Range and add cart parking by directing the creek into a culvert and then filling in the creek bed between the current Driving Range and tennis/fitness buildings. Build 4 pickleball courts on one tennis court.
The golf/tennis/fitness pro shop featuring a check-in area and hospitality counter on the left.
Build a wine room that can also serve as a 24-40 seat private fine dining option when the Greenside Grille is open. Relocate the lending library to a new meeting room. Re-route the entry to the Men’s and Women’s Locker Rooms; bring bathrooms up to code. Demolish the existing Cart Barn and Golf Pro Shop. Build three bocce courts and one croquet court in that area. Build a Halfway House near those courts to serve both golfers and bocce/croquet players. Build a new roadway and entry to the Clubhouse; reconstruct the porte cochere at the main entrance.
Expand the Greenside Grille kitchen and commissary (food delivery, storage and prep).
Upgrade the loading dock to provide more space for truck unloading and add higher walls to shield this area from Member parking and the Clubhouse main entrance.
Relocate Staff locker and break rooms.
Update the Clubhouse interior and exterior.

GET FIT
Planning for the Future Staying on Track by Teri Brodie, Fitness Operations Manager What an amazing time to be a part of Quail Creek Country Club! The Staff and I are thrilled with the new facilities project and are excited about the future. As we plan the new sports and fitness center, we will be focusing not only on the latest wellness trends but also on what has worked well for us in the past. We will continue to grow our Physical Therapy offering with a focus on Sports Medicine. TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) will be a huge part of what we become, as well as MAT (Muscle Activation Techniques) to help our tennis players and golfers excel at every level. The “under one roof” concept will benefit everyone - your golf and tennis pros will be working hand in hand with your fitness and wellness team to better serve your every need. A better lifestyle is in the cards for all! The new spa at QCCC will feature a true
spa experience. Our spa patrons will be greeted in a quiet waiting area separate from the fitness center and adjacent to soundproof massage rooms. Peace and tranquility will prevail! The spa will be located near the fitness day lockers and restrooms for added convenience. While construction of the new center is underway, we will continue our Fitness and Spa offerings in a new location on campus. Fitness will be housed in the existing Golf Pro Shop with massages right next door in a private trailer. Physical Therapy and MAT will be in the Golf Pro Shop as well. Classes will be held in the main Clubhouse utilizing the small dining rooms upstairs. We will continue all of our wonderful services during this transition time to keep everyone’s fitness and wellness on track. We can’t thank you enough for the opportunity to better serve our Members. Stop in and see us with any questions you may have about the new center – we are bursting with excitement!
Summer Classes Some of your favorite classes will continue through the summer. Watch the Member Website for an updated calendar in May. If you would like to create a class for a group of friends, please let us know. We also offer small-group Pilates springboard, TRX and personal training sessions. Summer is the perfect time to try new formats and enjoy exercising with your favorite people.
We want to hear from you! Submit your comments and suggestions about the Club through our Ombudsman Program. Log onto the Member Website under My Club menu and select Ombudsman Program. You can also email ombudsman@ quailcreekcc.com or visit one of our comment boxes located in the Golf Pro Shop, Tennis Sports Lounge, Fitness Center or Women's and Men's Locker Rooms.

COURT SIDE
Short Court Tennis – The Next Big Thing? by Jon Call, Director of Tennis A new sport is getting some buzz at Quail Creek Country Club!
whom they would not usually play.
Over the last few months we have been experimenting with “short court tennis” -basically the clay court version of hard court pickleball.
For active tennis players, short court helps with touch and feel around the net and eye-hand coordination. This game consists of more angles and soft touches that we all could use in our tennis repertoire!
Short court tennis is fun and challenging, yet not as strenuous as full court tennis. All play takes place within the service boxes of a tennis court and, because it is played on a clay surface at our Club, it is not as hard on the knees and other joints as pickleball. You can use your own racquet and borrow green-dot, low-pressure tennis balls with 25 percent less pressurization from the Tennis Pro Shop. Everyone, regardless of your tennis-playing history (or lack thereof) can play short court. Several different levels of tennis players can be on the same court and there will be a competitive game. This means participants get to compete and interact with people with
10
For former players who can no longer play tennis due to injury or the inability to move as well as previously, short court is an exciting option for getting back on the court again. Because the game is played only within the service boxes, players with limited mobility are able to join in the fun. For those of all ages looking to take up tennis for the first time, this is a great way to start slowly and build up to full court tennis. If you are looking to meet new people and have some fun, or add a different form of exercise to your week, this game is for you as well!
In action on the court, from left, Jean Pikus, Kathy Siddle, Jane O’Hara and Fisher Falls.
What Members Are Saying Jean Pikus Jean, an active tennis player, brought the idea of short court tennis to our Tennis Staff after hearing about “Vandyball” at Vanderbilt Country Club. She slightly modified that game so players could use their own tennis racquets. “Short court offers an opportunity for tennis players to add to their activity level during the week,” Jean explains. “This is a game that permits players of all levels, both male and female, to play together. It's a great opportunity to meet and socialize with Club Members you don't otherwise have a chance to interact with.”
Brian Leiding Brian is a former tennis player who can no longer play full court tennis due to an injury. He says, “Short court tennis is a great preview and is building up a lot of interest for when we have real pickleball courts.”
Lynn Middleton Lynn is an active tennis player who regularly plays short court tennis. She says, “It’s so much fun! Great exercise and helps your tennis game. Really makes you focus on controlling the ball.”
Jon’s Short Court Tips • Come out and give it a try! Although the scoring may seem daunting at first, once you get out on the court and start playing, you will be able to understand it rather quickly. • It's fun and challenging, yet not as strenuous as tennis. • You use your own racket and borrow green-dot, lowpressure tennis balls from the tennis shop; players don't need extra equipment. • Games end relatively quickly; play continues to 11 points, win by 2. So the more players in the round robin, the more quickly players cycle in and out of games. • The game can be added to your weekly tennis playing schedule; it does not need to take the place of your regular tennis game. • You can squeeze in a game between golf rounds!
How Short Court Works at QCCC Scoring is exactly the same as pickleball and so is the layout of the court. Because we play on clay at QCCC, players draw their own line to delineate the “kitchen” (no volley zone). Games end relatively quickly — play continues to 11 points and you must win by 2. This enables more players in the round robin to cycle in and out of games. Sign Up and Play! QCCC offers short court round robins every Wednesday from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. You can also organize your own game. Jon Call can explain the game for you. Our veteran players are also very welcoming to any new players who join the round robins. Please call or stop by the Tennis Pro Shop to register and to obtain a copy of “Quail Creek’s Short Court Tennis Game.”
Hope to see you out there on the courts!

TEE BOX TIPS
Sand, Eggs and Dollars – Getting Out of the Bunker by Mike Dero, Director of Golf Some call the peninsula of Florida one big sand bar, so it’s inevitable that our beautiful courses are going to feature sand in their design. Gene Sarazen, inventor of the sand wedge, said there are two Golden Rules for better bunker play: 1) Take sand, and 2) Follow through. Taking sand with each swing means you take the width and depth of sand that you want to take; make the sand splash in the same area of your stance every time; and understand how far the clubhead speed you produce throws the sand. In a sand shot, you don’t even touch the ball with the clubhead. The ball is moved by the cushion of sand that you displace with your swing arc. Following through requires that you make a lower body pivot around your lead leg. Think of your lead leg as an axle that you need to move over onto before you can rotate around it. Say “into and then around” as you whoosh the sand. Your elbows will expand down into the sand and then fold naturally up in front of your chest on a good follow through.
ball will always fly farther than the sand unless you get more than two inches of sand cushion on your clubface. If your sand swoosh is too deep, you have probably set your wrist hinges too much or you have your hands too far forward at impact. If you have trouble even touching the sand, you need to let your swing get more up and down.
VISUAL KEYS: The money shot: Attempt to splash the entire bill out of the sand without fretting about the ball. The sunny side up egg shot: Attempt to take all of the egg white out but don’t touch the yellow yolk. The ball in sand: Envision the ball as your egg lie and splash out all the sand, which will carry the ball out on a cushion of sand.
To practice your bunker shot, set up without a ball and take some fairly full swings to swoosh out about 8-12 inches of sand. See if you can take a repetitive swoosh of sand, not too deep, not too thin. Notice how far the sand flies. The
