A New Day Dawns Quail Course No. 18 Photo by Member Frank Mann

A Message from the President Once again, I begin this column expressing heartfelt thanks to so many of you, Staff and Members alike. As our recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Irma continues, I want to again thank Don Hunter for his ongoing leadership … Kevin Leo, his assistants Jose Garcia and Matt Clem and their entire Staff for resurrecting our two great golf courses from a pile of rubble (they are now in the best shape in recent memory - what a phenomenal job!) … and our entire Staff who, with passion and dedication, got us up and running again. Importantly, thanks to all of you for your support, patience and understanding during the entire reclamation process. You truly make Quail Creek Country Club special. The Board was gratified by the interest and energy shown by the over 300 Members who attended our November 7 Informational Meeting. This was the best-attended meeting in quite some time. I'd like to briefly recap the meeting's presentations (now posted on the Member Website): Hurricane Irma Impact: Don Hunter provided extensive information and illustrated the direct impact Irma had on our Club, its courses and its facilities. Those present who were not here during the storm were brought up to date on its incredible severity in our area. Strategic Plan: Hedy Whitney, our Strategic Planning Committee Chair, outlined our "looking forward" agenda and a preliminary concept for future improvements at our Club. Member Input Sessions will be held in late January and early February to get your comments and suggestions as our plans solidify. See pages 6-9 for a summary of our evolving Strategic Plan. Membership Initiatives: Elaine Christian, our Membership & Communications Committee Chair, unveiled several new Member recruitment initiatives. I am happy to report that we are already seeing the benefit of the hard work of this committee and our Membership Staff. I'm sure you have noticed the recent influx of new Members to our great Club! As always, please make it a point to introduce your friends, family, neighbors and business associates to QCCC. You are our best asset for recruiting new Members. See pages 4 and 5 for more information on our Membership programs. Many of you have asked about the status of our hurricane insurance claims. This is an ongoing process that we hope to have resolved in the near future. However, it's important to remind you that there are many parts involved in these complex negotiations. We will keep you posted. Lastly, a huge "Welcome Back!" to our seasonal residents as you return to paradise. For all of our Members, enjoy your great Club and use it often. Again, you are key to what makes Quail Creek Country Club so special. With much pride, Jim Clayton

MEMBERSHIP INITIATIVES

Paying It Forward - Our Ambassador Program How can new Members quickly discover what makes life at QCCC so special? The Club's Ambassador program, started several years ago by Members Joanne and George Downing and now chaired by Julie and Frank Mann, has over 120 volunteer Ambassadors and coordinators. "The goal of our Ambassadors is to ensure that their assigned new Member(s) are enjoying all aspects Julie & Frank Mann of Club life," Frank explains. "New Members are very important to the future of the Club. If they are happy and engaged, we can be more confident they will remain as Members and might also encourage their friends to join." Ambassadors are usually paired with new Members who share common interests and a similar demographic profile. Ambassadors typically mentor one or two Members and serve as a resource primarily through their first year in the Club. "Ambassadors help new Members feel welcome and connected; answer questions; and assist with their participation in Club amenities," says Julie. “Being an ambassador can be a personally rewarding and fun experience.” Anyone who has been a QCCC Member for at least a year can volunteer to be an Ambassador. If you would like to sign up, contact Sonia Hernandez at shernandez@quailcreekcc.com

Why I'm an Ambassador By Carolyn Prebus I have been an Ambassador for several years and love doing it for many reasons. I personally believe that it is not just about recruiting new Members but keeping them. We can do this by offering our friendship and assistance to integrate them into our community as soon as possible. I love meeting and assisting our new Members. I have made personal long-term friends with many of the new Members for whom I have been an Ambassador. I have been a Member of this Club since the 1990’s and think it is the very best club one can join. It is the Members who make it so great.

STRATEGIC PLAN SPECIAL REPORT

Transforming QCCC for the Future – Our Strategic Plan Over 300 QCCC Members got a glimpse into the future of the Club at the All-Member Informational Meeting on November 7. The Club’s evolving Strategic Plan has taken on added importance and urgency in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Recommendations for major capital improvements to the Club will require the approval of two-thirds of eligible voting Members who vote by proxy or in person at the Annual Meeting on March 26. Th e S t ra t e g i c P l a n n i n g Committee (SPC) and Club M a n a g e m e n t h ave b e e n working over the past three years to develop a facilities master plan. Their efforts

have accelerated significantly since the hurricane, which inflicted widespread damage on the Club. At t h e s a m e t i m e , t h e Membership & Communications Committee has been pursuing a plan to return our Membership rolls to optimum levels following several years of decline. One factor noted by prospective Members who decided not to join QCCC is that our facilities need updating. "Our goal is to seize this unique opportunity to transform and revitalize our Club," says Board Member and SPC chair Hedy Whitney. "We believe there is a growing sentiment among Members to hasten the process that would put what is now a preliminary plan into action. It's an exciting vision for the future and one that would give QCCC a competitive advantage over other country clubs in the area.” Design Options Under Review I n N o v e m b e r, t h e S P C began working with a local architectural firm and a local builder. Both are highly regarded and have extensive experience in the club environment. They are currently developing the project scope, design, process, costs and timing. So far, the SPC has reviewed several design options. Under consideration is the concept

Hedy Whitney

of an integrated sports and fitness center that would be a first in the area for any private club. It would be located where the tennis and fitness buildings currently stand. In addition to Fitness operations and the Golf and Tennis Pro Shops, the center would house the Cart Barn. In the Clubhouse, the proposed plan calls for a much-needed expansion of the Greenside Grille kitchen, food storage and prep areas. The Clubhouse s t r u c t u re wo u l d re m a i n essentially the same, with some modifications to both the exterior and interior. The roof would be replaced. Also under consideration is the location of the swimming pool, bocce courts and pickleball courts. QCCC is using an independent owner’s representative to provide oversight of the project, including timeline and costs, on behalf of the Club. C o n s t r u c t i o n wo u l d b e implemented in phases to reduce the impact on and inconvenience to Members. Every effort would be made to maintain all Club services for Members during construction. (Continued on page 9)

Member & Outside Experts’ Input to Date At the November 7 informational meeting, an overview was provided of input into the Strategic Plan from 2016 to the present. More detail follows: 2016 Member Survey The 2016 Member Survey provided valuable insight into Members’ satisfaction and areas they felt could be improved. Ninety-four percent of the 566 respondents to the survey were “very or somewhat satisfied” with the Club. At the same time, 97 percent agreed (65 percent strongly) that it is “very important” for the Club to continually upgrade its facilities. Also, over 60 percent of the respondents “strongly agreed” that the Club should have facilities and programs that are competitive with the best country clubs in the Naples area. When asked how they preferred to pay for upgrading the Club’s physical assets, 74 percent preferred alternate financing mechanisms such as a loan extension. Many verbatim comments urged renovations to upgrade various Club facilities, including the Clubhouse, Fitness Center, Cart Barn, golf practice areas, tennis complex, Pro Shops, locker rooms and swimming pool. 2016 Engineering Survey An analysis of deferred maintenance issues at our 35-year-old Club was undertaken by an engineering firm as an initial step in the strategic planning process. A substantial amount of the deferred maintenance costs are very near-term, with the balance needing to be addressed within the next five years. Examples of immediate needs are the Clubhouse roof and structural, electrical and plumbing infrastructure.

The preliminary plan calls for some modifications to the Clubhouse exterior and interior, including a much-needed expansion of the Greenside Grille kitchen.

A marketplace review determined that there is potential for an additional 1,600 golfing households within a six-mile radius of QCCC by 2021. The benchmarking study also reported that, other than our golf courses and the Greenside Grille, our facilities are dated compared to the competition. The McMahon Group concluded that QCCC needs to significantly improve our competitive position in order to retain current Members and attract new Members. 2017 Member Focus Groups Focus groups were held in April 2017 to get Member input on their Club experience and where the Club should be headed in the future. The feedback was consistent with responses to the 2016 Member Survey. In the focus groups, facilitated by the McMahon Group, Members prioritized potential facility improvements:

2017 McMahon Group Study

• Upgrading the Fitness Center • Improving food service in the Greenside Grille • Upgrading the Clubhouse interior and exterior • Enhancing the golf practice facilities/driving range

In early 2017, QCCC hired the McMahon Group to work with the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) to do the following: assess the Club’s competitive position; understand best practices of U.S. country clubs; and develop plans to enhance our facilities and Member satisfaction.

The majority of focus group participants supported making capital improvements to stay competitive and attract new Members. They also endorsed paying for the improvements through a long-term loan and a monthly capital dues increase.

Transforming QCCC for the Future (Continued from page 6) No Assessment Planned “Our intent is to take out a long-term loan that will be paid back through a monthly capital dues increase. There are no plans for an assessment,” Hedy indicates. “Long-term financing is consistent with the fact that our improvements would be enjoyed by multiple generations of both current and future Members.” Hedy noted that many Members are interested in how much the insurance proceeds from Hurricane Irma would contribute to the proposed plan. “With the assistance of our

insurance adjuster/advocate, we continue to engage with our insurance companies. While it is too early to predict how much we will recover, we remain hopeful that insurance proceeds will be available to help replace or repair Club facilities in a way that is consistent with our Strategic Plan,” she explains.

sessions will be held in late January and early February to get Member input on the concept. “It is the right time to take bold steps to enhance the Club experience for our current Members and also to attract new Members,” Hedy concludes.

The Board, the SPC and Club M a n a g e m e n t k n ow h ow important it is for Members to be engaged as the process continues. Communications will be ongoing and designed to make sure that Members are informed and engaged in a timely manner. Multiple

QCCC JUNIOR GOLF

Junior Golf Performance Academy Tees Off at QCCC Question: What do Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods and Alexa Pano have in common? Answer: They are the only players to win backto-back championships at Augusta National, the home of the Masters. You are probably asking: Who is Alexa Pano and what does this have to do with Quail Creek Country Club? Answer: Alexa is a talented 13-year-old who happens to have won the National Drive, Chip & Putt Championship in her age group in both 2016 and 2017. And she happens to be a student of Spencer Graham, QCCC’s Director of Instruction and Director of the Junior Golf Performance Academy based at QCCC. Quail Trails asked Spencer to share some of his perspectives on coaching golfers of all ages.

Over the years, my career has developed into being more focused on elite-level junior, collegiate and professional golfers. I owe this direction to my father. His mentorship was priceless. Spencer Graham Growing the game is a huge mission for me - and I will not compromise that under any circumstance. Q. How do you approach teaching a child versus an adult? A. My approach in coaching is different with every single client, both adults and juniors. There is no such thing as a perfect-model golf swing, and no two people are alike in the way that they learn or play the game. I try to focus on solid fundamentals with everyone - neutral grip, solid alignment, correct posture, smooth tempo and great balance. I refuse to put a band-aid on anyone’s swing, whether a junior or an adult. I believe in swing enhancements and game improvement, not overnight quick fixes or criticism for unintended mistakes. The process is long term, and it’s essentially the same for both juniors and adults. Those who stay committed always get better. Q. What is most rewarding for you as a golf instructor and coach?

Where’s Spencer? Somewhere in this group of happy campers!

Q. Why did you decide to focus on junior golf instruction as your career?

12

A. Most people think I coach only junior golfers, but I actually work with numerous adults as well, including several of our Members at QCCC. In my lifetime as a coach, I’ve given over 40,000 lessons to players ranging in age from 2 to 94.

A. Watching someone’s progress and seeing them smile. This game is supposed to be enjoyable and, although it is a very difficult sport, just catching a glimpse of someone’s happiness makes it all worthwhile. Q. What has been your experience being based at Quail Creek Country Club? A. QCCC has been the best private club that I have ever been based out of in my entire 22-year career. It is incredible how much our

Club supports and embraces growing junior golf - a rare find in Naples. Quail Creek Country Club feels like home, and the experience has been the best in my life. The growth of our Club looks very bright, and I believe that we are going to raise the bar so that other clubs will try to mirror our programs and service in numerous ways. Q. What would you recommend to parents who want to get their children into golf? A. The best way to learn when you are younger is to sign up for group lessons and mix in some private coaching once in a while as well. It is also imperative to let your children go along and play with you on the course - even if they tee off only 100 yards away from the flag. On-course experience is by far the best way to develop a passion for the game. Our golf camps are also a fun and enjoyable way to learn the sport in the summer months.

Creating A ‘Special Bond’ QCCC Members Petra and Patrick Fraley were looking for a “fun way” to get their two boys involved in golf. The Junior Golf Pe r for man ce Ac a d e m y ( J G PA ) provided the entrée. The result so far? Both Daniel and Tommy Pezeshkan’s Patrick, Petra, Tommy & Daniel confidence has grown as they have improved and, says Patrick, “It has helped us create a special bond - both on and off the course.” Tommy, who is on his school’s varsity golf team, says of JGPA: “I like it because it is very fun and I get to play and practice with all of my friends while also getting great coaching from the best in Naples.” Daniel says he likes golf “because it is very relaxing and it’s an individual sport which I love.” He adds: “I love the JGPA because they pair you up with people at your level, and also they make it fun to learn.” Patrick and Petra have seen multiple benefits. “I have noticed both Tommy and Daniel learning a lot about themselves since beginning JPGA,” says Patrick. “They have also gained a higher sense of determination and focus and control over their emotions.”

Lessons in Golf – and Life QCCC Members Heather and Andrew Caine “jumped at the chance” to enroll their daughters Makayla (MJ) and Reagan in the Junior Golf Performance Academy.

goal is to be able to hit my driver 150 yards and beat my Daddy someday soon.” Reagan says she enjoys JGPA because “It’s never boring and the coaches make it super fun!”

“I didn’t start playing golf until my 30’s and I always wished I was exposed to the game earlier in life,” says Andrew. “The Academy has been a great experience for our girls - it’s the best way to learn the game.”

Heather and Andrew have enjoyed seeing their girls grow both on and off the course. “For MJ, by being able to measure success on the golf course, she is motivated to work harder. This is a lesson that will benefit her on and off the course for her whole life,” Andrew says.

MJ is setting her sights high: “I love setting new goals. My new

COURT SIDE

What a Racquet! by John Call, Director of Tennis While out on the court recently, I noticed that my shots were a little off and that, when I struck the ball, there was an increased amount of vibration traveling up my arm. I continued playing. After cleaning up and putting everything away, I happened to glance at the side of my racquet frame. Lo and behold, the frame was cracked! Like any piece of equipment, the material that our rackets are composed of can break down and deteriorate over time. Even though I was shocked that this had happened, I was in the market for a new racquet anyway. This led me to think that one of the things to consider when evaluating your game is your equipment. While stroke production, strategy and court awareness are the most important facets of your game, having the proper equipment will help tie everything together. And, regarding the racket, the strings, grip and frame itself are all things that need to be evaluated. Racquet technology is constantly changing and

improving. I would recommend that you demo a new frame every two to three years. That doesn’t necessarily mean you will switch racquets, but at least you will see if the new technology can make a positive impact on your game. The logical place to start is with the updated version of the racquet you are currently using. Or, as I recently did, you can evaluate your game and decide what you would like to get out of your next frame. I wanted more topspin. So, after demoing several racquets, I settled on a slightly larger Wilson with a more open string pattern. An open string pattern means that the strings are further apart. This gives them more space to slide and “snap back” after striking the ball - two of the main contributing factors in how a racquet helps you produce more topspin. The Pro Shop Staff and I are always well informed on the latest in racquet technology and updates. We are always available to answer any questions and to make recommendations as to the most appropriate racquet for each player.
