No. 13 Quail Course

A MESSAGE FROM THE

President

It’s difficult to believe that another wonderful season has passed here at Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC). We enjoyed outstanding weather, golf courses in the best shape in recent memory, excellent dining and great times with family and friends. While many of you have journeyed north, we will continue to improve your Club over the summer. Kevin Leo and his crew are working hard on both courses. Greens, tees, fairways and rough have all been aerified and top dressed. Trees are being trimmed and rough areas addressed. The cart path renovation on the USGA U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship course (the two back nines) is completed. Following a months-long drought, June brought over 35 inches of rain, creating new challenges for Kevin and his crew. As we would expect, they’re managing through it without missing a beat. I want to thank those of you who participated in the April focus groups conducted by the McMahon Group. Your participation was invaluable. As you know, the intent was to have Member input on the Club experience as it stands today, as well as where the Club should be headed in the future. The good news is that Member satisfaction is high: 91 percent

2

of the focus group participants said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the Club; 95 percent agreed that our Club must provide the next generation of Members what they want; and 96 percent stated it was important to upgrade our facilities within the next two years to “stay in the game.” To that end, the Board and the Strategic Planning Committee will use Member input to formulate a business plan to address the areas that Members said needed improvement. The plan will consider emerging trends in the country club industry that will enhance our own Member experience. Our timeline is to complete planning by this fall. We want to ensure the overall process is Member-driven, data-driven and transparent to you every step of the way. The Strategic Plan will be presented to the Members when approved by the Board. Lastly, we all know that when it comes to our Club, “It’s the people who make the difference”. Please continue to tell your friends, neighbors and business associates about our great Club. Invite them to QCCC and they’ll thank you for the rest of their lives. Have a wonderful summer, Jim Clayton

COURT SIDE

The ‘Ins’ and ‘Outs’ of QCCC Court Maintenance by Jon Call, Director of Tennis I want you to be the most well-rounded tennis player you can be. To accomplish this, you should be aware of all facets of the game, not solely limiting yourself to strategy and stroke production. That is why I’d like to share some background about the court makeup here at QCCC, as well as the processes we use to keep our 13 tennis courts and two bocce courts in top-level tournament condition.

material called Har-Tru. Its primary component is a metabasalt mined in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. There are several advantages of Har-Tru compared to other surfaces. Har-Tru provides more cushion, thereby making it easier on the knees and other joints. It does not reflect heat, slows the ball down for longer rallies and dries more quickly after rain. Throughout the year, the Staff and I are constantly replenishing the court surface with fresh Har-Tru. After a heavy rain or copious amounts of wind, much of the surface level has either blown or washed away depending on the severity of these forces. This leaves the playing surface uneven and can also potentially make the tennis court lines higher than the surface. We apply new material and evenly spread it using a rake-like tool called a lute.

Will Arledge uses the lute to groom our courts

The tennis courts are composed of several different layers. The bottom level is soil, followed by a combination of several different layers of crushed rock and stone. These layers of aggregate work to facilitate a form of capillary action that both drains and retains water. The green surface level is a

We use the same tool when clearing the courts of “dead material.” This phenomenon occurs over time as the court is played on and brushed. We scrape the material from the court and apply a comparable amount of new Har-Tru to reinvigorate the surface area. The Staff and I want you and your guests to have the best possible experience while at QCCC, and I always welcome your comments and suggestions. Should you ever see anything on the courts that needs attention, please let me know and we will address it immediately.

GET FIT

QCCC Physical Therapy is Back! by Teri Brodie, Fitness Operations Manager

Meet Jacob Madigan QCCC Fitness, Wellness & Spa welcomes Jacob Madigan as our new on-site physical therapist. Jacob is part of the Physical Therapy Clinic of Naples and will be on-site Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer months and full-time during season. Jacob received his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Wisconsin and has been living in Naples for the last several years. “My education and work experiences have afforded me the opportunities to work with a broad spectrum of individuals, ranging from promising teenage athletes to a 90-years-young great-grandmother looking to stay active and strong,” said Jacob. His past experiences have contributed to creating a well-rounded practitioner capable of working with simple muscle strains and joint sprains, to more complex cases such as chronic pain.

New and Improved Fall Class Schedule! Beginning September 4 our exciting new fall class schedule premieres. Fit and Fabulous is one of our favorite new classes and we can’t wait to share it with you! Watch for updates on our new classes throughout August. Our current summer class schedule will end on July 30. If you would like to continue a small group in August, we can set up an appointment with one of our Personal Trainers each week to keep you on the move! Please contact Teri at 5939378 to schedule a private class.

6

With his DPT, Jacob is able to take walk-ins directly from the golf course, tennis court or wherever -- a wonderful bonus for our Members. A prescription from your personal doctor is not needed. Most insurance is accepted as full or partial payment. The quieter summer months are also a great time to treat that nagging injury. Physical therapy can help you get healthy and back into your regular fitness routine more quickly. “I look forward to helping individuals not only recover but also prevent injuries and maintain a high level of health and wellness,” said Jacob. “In doing so, I will help to guide the Members of Quail Creek Country Club to a higher quality of living.” Please stop in the Fitness, Wellness & Spa center and meet Jacob. To make an appointment, please contact Teri at 239-593-9378.

ON THE GREEN

Why It’s Great to be at QCCC in the Summer … Golf and Beyond by Mike Dero, Director of Golf Summer is not the off-season; it’s our local on-season. Here’s why: • It is the perfect time to make a swing change or dedicate yourself to improving some aspect of your golf game. Do a wedge game overhaul, for example, and learn to be confident from 30, 50 and 75 yards. • Summer thunderstorms are exciting. They throw off megatons of energy, and after they blow through it is cooler outside and the world is washed clean. The humid air makes our skin stay moist. • Traffic is so much lighter in the summer after the 10,000 car carriers head north. The truth is that the current off-season traffic is what in-season traffic was 10 years ago. But still, it’s noticeably better. • Take a lesson series from your favorite Club Golf Professional. Share that you are serious about improving your game and will commit to several lessons. We are happy to offer a discounted summer price. Becoming more confident and skilled at driving or chipping or putting feels amazingly good. • It is summer; it is going to be 90 degrees and sunny every day, so get out on the water; find a friend with a boat; buy a boat; rent a boat; or, if you already own a boat, use it! Kayak the Imperial River; try a paddle board; or go for an early morning or sunset walk on the beach. Swim in the pool and enjoy a frozen drink.

Golf lesson with Nate Johnson

• We live in a tropical paradise and everything is green and lush. Propagate your favorite plant by snipping off a stem and putting it in moist soil. Go online for some rooting tips and you’ll think you can beautify the world. • When you get off work or have had your afternoon relax time, it is still light outside and you can hit a few golf balls or play nine holes. • You can golf at over 60 beautiful reciprocal golf courses at affordable prices. • Enjoy a one-day or three-day Florida golf vacation to one of ten world-class in-state golf destinations including Streamsong, World of Woods and TPC Sawgrass. Gather some friends and make a memory.

From the Men’s Golf Association The MGA’s stated purpose is to promote friendship, fellowship and sportsmanship consistent with the game of golf. The MGA is a great way to mix with players you don’t often get paired with. If you are new to QCCC, it's a great way to meet other golfers. Many improvements are being made to both of our courses this summer and we are looking forward to the 2017 - 2018 season beginning with our Opening Day Tournament on October 28. If you are a member, thank you for participating. If you are not a member, join us! For more information about the MGA contact Tom Benua at tbenua315@gmail.com. Gary Smith, MGA President

31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship October 7 – 12, 2017 The first ever USGA event held in Collier County is quickly approaching! In the early 1980s, Quail Creek Country Club (QCCC) became one of the first clubs in the Naples area to offer a full country club atmosphere, including 36 holes of golf. Now, QCCC will be the first country club in Collier County to host a United States Golf Association (USGA) championship, the 31st U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur to be held October 7-12. Julia Potter is the defending champion and will be competing to win her third title. “I love the women who play in this event and what this event stands for. It's a lot of working women and mothers, that type of golfer. So, that always gets me pumped for it,” said Julia, an Indianapolis, Ind., native. She won both of her Women’s Mid-Amateurs on Donald Ross courses – last year at The Kahkwa Club in Erie, Pa., and, in 2013, at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C.

Kim Benedict, a resident of Bonita Springs and a QCCC Member, will be playing in a qualifier for the chance to compete. “I’m thrilled that QCCC is hosting the 2017 U.S. Women’s MidAmateur. It’s an excellent pairing of a great championship and QCCC’s great courses. I’ll be practicing hard to make sure I’m ready to compete in October,” said Kim, the Gulf No. 11 Quail Course Coast High School golf coach. “The facilities at QCCC, including the new Short Game Experience, allow me to work on a multitude of shots, especially wedge and short game shots, and I hope to take my game to the next level with continued focus in these areas.” Last year Kim defeated defending champion Lauren Greenlief in the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, before being eliminated in the round of 32.

“The preparation process is going smoothly. From meeting with tournament chairs to evaluating the courses for hole placement to working with agronomists, we have been immersing ourselves in activities designed to ensure the best possible championship,” said Rachel Sidowski, Tournament Director. “We’ve received a warm welcome and are very excited to bring the first of hopefully many USGA championships to Collier County.”

Dottie joined the LPGA Tour in 1988 and won 17 official events on the Tour, including two major championships, the 1992 and 1999 Nabisco Dinah Shore. Her 19-under-par finish in the 1999 victory still stands as the lowest score in relation to par in a major championship. Dottie also played for the United States in the Solheim Cup six times. She is currently an on-course reporter with CBS. Championship Fundraising is in its final phase. CHEF'S NOTES

Recipes for Tasty & Healthy Summer Cuisine By Scott Ross, Executive Chef While the summer months bring a slower pace to QCCC dining, we remain active serving our year-round Members and their guests, while also preparing for the upcoming season. We’re busy planning new Club menus for casual dining and events and working with current and future purveyors on competitive pricing for products and services. As the weather warms up and the sun shines longer, Mother Nature gives us new and great things to cook and eat. Many fruits and vegetables are ready to be harvested. Following are two recipes that use the very best in fruits and vegetables — mango and zucchini.

Zucchini Pasta, Serves 4 Zucchini, Cucurbita pepo, is a member of the cucumber and melon family. Inhabitants of Central and South America have been eating zucchini for several thousand years, but the zucchini we know today is a variety of summer squash developed in Italy. Zucchini is one of the top vegetables produced in summer months. The recipe below calls for zucchini blossoms. Cooks and gardeners who have too many blossoms, and not enough time for hand-stuffing flowers, can use this recipe to create a very simple, elegant and inexpensive pasta dish in less than 15 minutes. You can also find zucchini blossoms at Whole Foods and Fresh Market. 2 cloves 1 tsp 1 tsp 2 tbsp 20 1 lb

Garlic, whole, peeled Crushed chili peppers Lemon zest Butter Zucchini blossoms, slice petals into strips Cooked pasta (penne, angel hair, etc.) Parmesan cheese, grated

Sauté garlic, crushed chili pepper and lemon zest in butter. Remove the garlic and add sliced zucchini petals. Cook for a minute until the blossoms start to wilt. Salt to taste and adjust seasonings. Add cooked and drained pasta to the blossoms and toss in the pan until coated. Top with grated Parmesan cheese and serve.

Mango Lassi (Smoothie), Serves 2 The mango, my favorite fruit, is a juicy stone fruit belonging to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous tropical fruiting trees, cultivated mostly for edible fruit. The mango is native to South and Southeast Asia and has been distributed worldwide to become one of the most cultivated fruits in the tropics. The center of diversity of the Mangifera genus is in India. Mango Lassi is a sweet mango-yogurt smoothie that is a staple at Indian restaurants and a lot of Florida homes as well. 1 cup Plain yogurt 1/2 cup Milk 1 cup chopped mango (peeled and stone removed) 4 tsp Sugar, to taste dash Ground cardamom (optional) Put mango, yogurt, milk, sugar and cardamom into a blender and blend for 2 minutes. Pour into individual glasses and serve. Sprinkle with a little cardamom if desired. The lassi can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
