Back in Action! Creek No. 1 Putting Green, October 14, 2017

A Message from the President Following the devastation left behind by Hurricane Irma, we have seen the best of what Quail Creek Country Club has to offer. As we recover, our Staff has demonstrated why they are the best in southwest Florida. With Food and Beverage Staffers raking fairways, Golf Pros operating chain saws, and Grounds Crew personnel coming to work despite great personal hardship, our Staff demonstrated an indomitable will and spirit to reclaim our great Club. In short, all of our employees stepped up to perform whatever task they were assigned. I could not be prouder of their efforts. I also want to especially thank Don Hunter for his leadership during this challenging time and Kevin Leo and his Staff for their unrelenting hard work and dedication to get our facilities and golf courses back in shape as quickly as possible. Our Staff has exhibited outstanding passion and loyalty as we move forward, and we can't thank them enough. As you know, the Board has approved an assessment to help cover cleanup costs, unfunded payroll and other related expenses. We have elected not to build a "cushion" into this amount as we go through the insurance process with our carriers. In light of this, we urge you to utilize the Club as much as possible as we progress to full operation. It is vitally important that we all support the Club during the recovery period.

2

Not only has our Staff stepped up in an incredible fashion, so have our Members. Many of our employees were severely impacted by the hurricane. Homes were damaged and many faced atypical expenses. Our Members have contributed over $80,000 to the Employee Hurricane Recovery Fund. These monies will help several Staff members rebuild their homes and also support other employees who suffered losses and damage. Thanks to all

of you who contributed! A committee of Staff and Management is overseeing the distribution of these funds. U n fo r t u n ate l y, I r m a n e ce ss i t ate d t h e cancelation of the USGA Women's Mid Amateur Championship at QCCC. Our expectation was that hosting this tournament would help recruit new Members to our great Club. But it was not meant to be. Without missing a beat, Board Member Elaine Christian and the Membership Committee and Staff have launched a number of initiatives under the umbrella of "Our Membership Challenge" to help boost our Membership. Please acquaint yourself with these new programs that are posted on the Member Website homepage or contact Nick Gray, our Membership Director. Let your friends and family know about these unique opportunities to join QCCC. As always, you are the lifeblood of our Club and the very best source of potential Members. Lastly, we continue to engage with our insurance carriers. This will be a lengthy process and will be critical to the long-term success and recovery of our Club. We have hired Key Adjusters to help us navigate this complicated process. This firm has an exceptional track record in securing fair and equitable settlements in these matters, and they are working hard on our behalf. Again, thank you all for your support. We look forward to the beginning of season as friends return "home" for the coming months. Despite the enormous challenges that Irma has brought, please rest assured that we will be better than ever as we recover and rebuild for the future. With much Quail Creek Pride, Jim Clayton

HURRICANE IRMA SPECIAL REPORT

Quail Strong ‘Everyone Wanted to Help’ Quail Strong. Quail Pride. Never was the dedication and energy of QCCC Staff more in evidence than before, during and after Hurricane Irma. Despite having to deal with their own family and home issues, QCCC employees made Club recovery a priority in the wake of the storm. Staffers from all departments pitched in for tasks including tree removal, fairway raking, glass and shingle cleanup and ceiling tile removal. “The recovery has been remarkable,” says Board Member Tom Robertson, who rode out the hurricane in his Quail Creek Estates home and was on site the following day. “The pre-storm preparation and leadership of Don Hunter and Kevin Leo were the enablers. The response of employees from every part of the Club was awesome. As an example, dining room Staff was on the golf course working alongside golf course maintenance employees. Everyone wanted to help.”

Tarps cover roof damage on the Clubhouse, Fitness Center and Tennis Center.

Tom adds: “Quail Creek is very fortunate to have QCCC Staff makes plans for Hurricane Irma. leadership and employees who take great pride in the Club and are committed to the Club’s success, the Membership and their co-workers.”

‘Quail Creek 2.0’ Always the optimist, Kevin Leo posed for the photo at right and gave a double thumbs-up. As Director of Golf Courses & Grounds, Kevin and his course maintenance team faced a daunting challenge - over 2,000 trees on the ground, leaning or broken in half; every fairway, tee box and green strewn with pine straw, palm fronds, sticks and branches; and all 80 bunkers in need of repair and replenishment with new sand. “We took a direct hit here in North Naples, but the world Kevin Leo, left, and Don Hunter are dwarfed did not end,” Kevin says. “The entire Staff has been out by uprooted trees. putting all the pieces back together. The power of Mother Nature is unbelievable. But even more powerful have been Members, homeowners and Staff coming together as a team to clean up ‘Their Club.’” How does Kevin, a long-time QCCC employee, view the future of QCCC? He says simply: “Quail Creek 2.0.”

Recovering from Irma ‘True Quail Creek Pride & Teamwork’ Prior to Hurricane Irma’s arrival, Dining Room Manager Linda Landry’s priority was reaching out to Food and Beverage (F&B) Staff to learn their plans so that the Club could stay in touch with them during and after the storm. Linda arrived on site two days after Irma hit and was shocked at the devastation. She joined F&B colleagues working with the Club’s maintenance crew to clean up the golf courses (“We did five holes!”), the Clubhouse Linda Landry (“True Quail Creek Pride”) and, when the Greenside Grille opened with a limited lunch menu, teamed with F&B Staff to get ready for business (“True QCCC Teamwork”). “Any of our Staff members will tell you how they are so proud to be a part of all this and how rewarding it is to each one of them,” she says. Linda and the F&B team are eager for the golf courses to fully re-open “so that our Members can have that part of QCCC back in their lives. It will also bring the lunch gathering ‘buzz’ back into the Greenside Grille!”

Pitchforks in action! QCCC Food and Beverage Staff takes a break from pine straw and debris removal. From left, Member Bill Flowers (who provided the pitchforks), Juan Vegas, Nate Pickens, Ralph Gonzalez, Molly Badham, Linda Landry and Troy McKenzie. Bill also worked alongside golf course maintenance employees before and after the storm and had previously assisted Kevin Leo in improving the operation and condition of the golf practice facilities.

Linda adds - “I have always thought we are the best, but we will come out even stronger and better (because of Irma).”

‘A Different Perspective’ That’s how QCCC Golf Professional Holly Vaughn describes what Members will notice when the Club’s golf courses fully re-open for play. “The amount of trees fallen, broken, uprooted and leaning is unbelievable,” Holly says. “I’m always amazed at Mother Nature.”

Storm debris is ready to be carted away as part of cleanup efforts.

A veteran of two tornadoes, two earthquakes, Holly Vaughn and now two hurricanes, Holly reported for cleanup duty “with boots and gloves” two days after Irma. She joined colleagues loading tree limbs, branches, shingles and other debris into maintenance carts and then dumping the loads in the parking lot. “The employees at QCCC in every department are very hard working and devoted,” Holly says. “Working with the maintenance team and our own golf Staff those first few weeks - in the heat of the day, hour after hour, hot and sweaty and exhausted - they are exemplary employees. We all cooperated like a family for whatever the job was to be done.”

And then there was one … Crews clear what’s left of the iconic cluster of palm trees on No. 18 Creek.

HURRICANE IRMA SPECIAL REPORT

Quail Pride “We Will Come Out Stronger” As the Tennis Department representative in the wake of the storm, Janette Logan, Tennis Pro Shop Manager, was busy bagging all stock from inventory, photographing damage to the tennis building and courts, and scheduling appointments with sub-contractors to assess damage and price scenarios for replacement and rebuilding. Now working from improvised office space in the Sports Lounge due to water incursion into the Pro Shop, Janette is happy to resume her normal responsibilities. “I am so impressed by Janette Logan sorts merchandise the progress that has that was affected by the storm. been made Club-wide cleaning the property,” she says. “The Board of Directors and the Club are generous and intelligent to support the employees like family. I so believe that good staff is worth keeping, and the Club has demonstrated (that) for all of us 110 percent. Thank you for relieving the pressure of lost wages during this time.”

Irma toppled lights, fences, score posts and changeover structures at the tennis courts.

The Halfway House directional sign is obscured by storm debris.

Janette anticipates that good things will result from Irma. “I believe we are carrying this experience with a positive and strong vision for recovery ... We will come out stronger and more improved with a new face and better amenities. I feel the Tennis Center especially will be phenomenal!”

Stumped? Even the tree stumps behind the cart barn have an opinion about Irma.

QCCC Staff removes storm debris from a fairway.

Building for the Future ‘We Are Family’ Pierre Altesse and Asti Dervishi are among the Food and Beverage Staffers who make our dining experience a positive one. In the days following Hurricane Irma, they traded food trays for rakes, shovels and paint rollers as part of the QCCC cleanup effort. “Whatever the job is, we want to do it well,” says Pierre. “Everybody had fun working together. We tried to do everything our best.” Adds Asti - “It was a good experience – totally different from what I normally do. And there’s so much to do.”

Pierre and Asti worked as a team, starting by cleaning up shingles blown from the Clubhouse roof and glass from the cupola at the main entrance. They moved on to collect branches, sticks and other debris, going back and forth to pick up and then deposit the loads in the parking lot. Before the Clubhouse had power, they used the flashlights on their cell phones to navigate in the darkness, where they were part of the crew removing ceiling tiles and other debris from a stairwell. They also teamed up to paint the walkways at the Fitness and Tennis Centers.

“We are part of a family at Quail Creek,” says Asti. “I feel like I know everyone. This is my house.” Adds Pierre - “Quail Creek will be stronger because of the hurricane. Everything I have is because of the Club. I love it.”

Employee Hurricane Recovery Fund More than 230 Members gave over $80,000 to help our loyal employees who suffered damage to their homes and personal belongings as a result of Irma. About half of the QCCC Staff incurred losses ranging from blown-away roofs to broken fences to damaged septic systems. Proceeds from the fund will help these valued members of the QCCC family repair, rebuild and recover. Thank you!

Palm fronds were scattered throughout Club property.

ON THE GREEN

Chipping vs. Pitching Knowing the difference can help save strokes on every round by Mike Dero, Director of Golf There’s an old saying - “Those who enjoy the short game love the game of golf.” I firmly believe this. Golfers can keep getting better at their short

1

2

game skills, no matter what their age. Since trust is a must in golf, it’s important to be committed to the shot before you hit it, and you can’t commit to a chip or a pitch if you don’t know the difference or the reason for choosing one over the other. Chipping Characteristics:

3

4

1. The chip backswing. The club swings more straight back and doesn't go higher than the chest because of minimal wrist hinging. The club stays more in front of your chest and your right elbow bends very little. 2. The chip follow through. The club stays in front of your chest, and your wrists hold their position. You will finish low with the grip still aimed at your left hip. 3. The pitch follow through. Mirror image "L shape" finish position. Your lower body rotation is your main power source. 4. Your pitching backswing "L shape" position. Left shoulder turns to the ball, the left arm is horizontal and the club is vertical.

8

1. The flight of the ball will generally be lower because we keep our hands forward of the ball through impact. The ball will roll further than a pitch. 2. The backswing is not long and the wrists hinge very little or none at all. The backswing goes straighter back along the target line. 3. The follow through finishes with the hands still leading the clubface. The grip aims to the hip on a chip. The weight is on the lead side (front foot). The club head will finish below waist high. 4. T h e b a c k s w i n g i s shoulders and triangle arm swing; the follow through is gravity and hip turn. 5. We either pinch the ball into the air with a descending blow or brush

the ball into the air with a very level swing arc through impact. Pitching Characteristics: 1. The flight of the ball is generally higher and farther because we use more wrist hinging which adds power. 2. The backswing has more folding of the back elbow and more hinging of the wrists. 3. The ball is positioned near the center of your stance. The bottom of your swing arc should touch just in front of the ball. Deciding Which To Use: 1. Look at the lie. Is the ball sitting up, sitting tight or in long deep grass? 2. Decide where you want the ball to land. What is the most predictable bounce area? 3. What turf or hill do you have to go over? 4. Which shot matches your eye, and in which shot are you more confident? Finally, after committing to a technique and a club selection, Stare at the Target… Glance at the Ball. Your body will react and follow your intent, but if you don’t let your mind see and focus on the target, you will probably get an undesirable result.

COURT SIDE

A Progress Report … Advantage QCCC! by John Call, Director of Tennis It’s been a long road since Hurricane Irma, but we are making progress! The Staff and I have been working to repair the courts and surrounding facility as best we can. In addition to the damage to the fences, courts, awnings, water fountains and lights, we had a large amount of debris to contend with - everything from roof shingles to broken glass. Thank you to our Food and Beverage colleagues and the maintenance team for helping us pick up all of the debris that was scattered across the courts. The Sports Lounge sustained only minor water damage that was contained in the upper portion of the wall above the doorframe that leads into the Tennis Pro Shop. Unfortunately, the Pro Shop and back offices were not so lucky, and a large portion of the drywall had to be cut out and is awaiting replacement. Thankfully, we were able to move the Pro Shop operations, along with our desks and computers, into the Sports Lounge. This will allow us to function

close to normalcy and to be near the courts so that we are able to greet Members and guests as they come to play. Due to the scope and magnitude of our insurance claim, recovery has been and will be a bit of a protracted process. So far, they have sent out two separate adjusters. We went over the damage with them, and I informed them what it would take to get our facility back up to where it should be. I have had several court contractors visit the facility to give us quotes on completing a full top to bottom renovation. If all goes as planned, we should be able to accomplish this by the end of next summer. In the meantime, we have 10 courts up and running for our Members and guests. Despite it all, my Staff and I have maintained our positive attitude and outlook. We are also thankful that the damage was not as bad as it could have been!
