C owboy Poets 35TH GATHERING OF RETURNS TO PRESCOTT

The 2023 edition of the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering will take the stage at Yavapai College Performing Arts Center Aug. 10 through Aug. 12.

This year’s gathering features more than 40 authentic cowboy poets and singers sharing the heritage and culture of the American cowboy for two days and three nights of entertainment.

Headline performers include Trinity Seely, Doris Daley and The Cowboy Way. This year’s collectible poster "This One’s for You, Buddy", created by local artist Roselynn Fernwalt, will be available for purchase at the gathering, as will raffle tickets to win an original framed giclee of the poster.

Trinity Seely, having lived on a working cattle ranch in Montana with her husband and children, has a deep perspective and appreciation into the lifestyle of the historic western era. She has received numerous awards and nominations, including being listed among True West’s favorite western artists. Her third release, Cowboy’s Wage, was archived into the Cowboy Hall of fame museum. Her beautiful vocals give voice to the life of a cowgirl and ranch wife.

Doris Daley, known as the “western wordsmith and purveyor of poetry,” has been an emcee and featured performer at virtually every major cowboy festival in Canada as well as a headline performer at multiple western venues across the United States.

In 2004, she was named Best Female Cowboy Poet in North America by the Academy of Western Artists, the first time any Canadian — male or

female — has won the cowboy poetry category.

Three times she has been named one of the top 5 Cowgirl Poets in North America by the Western Music Association, which in 2009 awarded her top honors for Best Female Cowboy Poet and Best Cowboy Poetry CD. As with her AWA Will Rogers Awards, she’s the first Canadian to bring home top honors in the cowboy poetry categories.

The Cowboy Way, a trio of awardwinning New Mexico singers and songwriters — Doug Figgs, Jim

Jones and Mariam Funke — captures the spirit of the West with their lively, high-energy shows featuring tight harmonicas and smokin’ instrumentals.

The gathering also offers free day sessions throughout the campus on Friday and Saturday where attendees can meet the cowboy poets and singers and enjoy stories of the culture and history of the American cowboy.

Tickets are available at azcowboypoets.org or by calling 928.776.2000 or 877.928.4253.

Prescott PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT

Palomino

Prescott Now: How long have you guys been playing together?

Palomino: Mike and Ann Marie were in another band (Cadillac Ranch) for a while in 2016-2017 and also played together for several months pre-pandemic with Travis Crow at The Windsock.

When things started opening up in fall 2020, Mike and Ann Marie got together with Darin Mahoney for a few jam sessions that were the sparked Palomino. Ann Marie and Darin played some gigs in early 2021 as a duo, but the trio came to fruition in spring and into the summer of ‘21.

We added John Regalado on upright bass to round out the lineup

in early ‘22. John had played in a bluegrass band called Peaceful Outlaws with Darin previously.

Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you?

Palomino: We are an unabashedly country band, leaning heavily into the cowboy and western flavor of the genre. But we also love to play the fun and crowd-pleasing ‘80s and ‘90s country hits. We’ve also been known to reimagine a few noncountry hits to fit the Palomino style.

Country music is simple, accessible, and at its very essence, true to the human spirit and experience.

Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Palomino: You have to define for yourselves how you measure your success. When we set off making music as a group and talked about what we wanted from this, we luckily all seemed to be very much on the same page. We wanted to play regularly without it eating too much into our home lives and family time.

But most of all, we wanted to have fun playing music with people we enjoyed hanging out with; we bring the audience along for the ride.

Photos by Anderson Creative Photography

Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?

Palomino: Darin and Ann Marie played a duo gig for a comic book convention in Chino Valley, and while there were a decent number of people in attendance, never was there a less interested or attentive group.

Mike and darin have had some serious successes in their own musical careers playing for some really big crowds. (Darin recently played his instrumental guitar compositions to a sold-out house at the MIM in Scottsdale.) But our biggest show would probably be when we played recently at Whiskey River Tavern for an

event with Forrie Smith from the Yellowstone TV show. The place was jam-packed and lively!

Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?

Palomino: Ann Marie is a native Arizonan who moved to Prescott from Chandler at 9 in 1988. Her family moved to the area looking for a more slow-paced life. She married another longtime Prescottonian. Together they’ve raised and are raising five of their own!

Darin had been coming to Prescott since his rodeo days (starting in ‘81). He first moved to Chino Valley in 1995 training horses, but cancer took him down to the Phoenix area.

He and his wife Amy moved back to Chino in 2017.

Mike used to hunt the area with his dad, and his dad always said he wanted to move to the area someday. His dream came true in the early ‘80s, and not long after, Mike finished school and followed his parents to Prescott. He met his wife Darby here, and they have raised their family here.

John came through Prescott on his motorcycle on his way back from Sturgis in 1994. He fell in love with the mountains and the small-town western feeling. He moved to the area upon his retirement in 2019 with his wife, his dog and his horse.

Pure Imagination Festival Brings

Pure Joy

The Pure Imagination Festival returned to Watson Lake Park for its second edition on May 20, 2023 and took some big steps toward establishing itself as a new Prescott musical tradition. Approximately 7,000 concertgoers watched more than a dozen performances throughout the sonic spectrum. Their positive spirit reverberated from two stages as the audience enjoyed great food, drink and merchandise from a league of happy vendors.

The musical highlights were too numerous to list all, but included Ziggy Marley’s timeless reggae, Los Lobos’ Latino roots-rock, Lucinda Williams’ hard-driving folk and Nappy Roots’ vintage hip-hop. They were bolstered by stellar sets from local favorites Ponderosa Grove with its rock and soul-driven songs, Johan Glidden’s folk rock and Rachael Plays Guitar’s intriguing blend of genres. Other performers included Dirtwire, the Brummies, Jared James Nichols, Capital Cities, and Alison Russell.

The littles had a world of their own to explore on the Tiny Tunes Stage with a parade, kids’ talent show, kazoo-making and puppetry. People of all ages had a great time reveling in sunshine that held off an unusual late-May string of monsoon-like storms and an aura of peace embraced by the musicians and the ecofriendly festival. It also featured art installations and live painters, aerialists, stilt walkers, lounge spaces and dance exhibitions including one from the Hopi Water Clan Dance Troupe. An expanded two-day Pure Imagination Festival is reportedly in the works for May 2024.

Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?

Jason Perkins: We were living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, working at La Fonda Hotel. And the same group of owners at La Fonda also owned the Hassayampa Inn here in Prescott.

In 2011, the ownership offered me the Executive Chef position at the Hassayampa Inn (Peacock Dining Room). It was a two-week notice, and I was going to have to pick up and leave. Within that two-week period we got married. I was just overwhelmed with the opportunity but excited about moving to Prescott.

Prescott Now: How did you get into the hospitality industry?

Jason Perkins: I started doing catering right out of high school and started taking culinary arts

JASON AND VANESSA PERKINS PRESERVING PAPA'S POWER

classes while working in the industry. After working in restaurants and catering companies for a few years I decided that this was the chosen path for me and I decided to start working my way towards being an executive chef. I focused all of my energy into learning and experience, I left home to travel out west and gain as much experience and knowledge as I could. That venture ultimately led me to where I am today.

Vanessa Perkins: At age of 16, I took my first steps into the world of hospitality in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was taught a high level of hospitality by an amazing team that I will never forget the La Fonda Hotel Team. It was there that I discovered my innate ability to find joy in making others happy. The opportunity to create unique experiences for guests ignited a passion within me, driving me to excel in the art of customer service. This early realization laid the foundation for a remarkable

career dedicated to serving others.

Prescott Now: Have you always wanted to own a restaurant?

Jason Perkins: I just always knew owning a restaurant is something I would want. Once I started crossing off certain things in my career, I wanted to go further and take the next step. To me it’s always been about progressing and taking that next step and trying to always do better.

Prescott Now: What was the main factor in choosing Papa’s?

Jason Perkins: When Papa’s was located on White Spar, that was the first place we ever went out to eat in Prescott. I remember sitting outside on the patio, and it was a great first experience.

We considered buying other places or opening a new restaurant, but when we found the confidential listing and then found out it was Papa’s, we got very excited because we thought, “Well,

48 Prescott NOW Vol. 11, No. 7
RESTAURANT FEATURE: PAPA'S UPTOWN ITALIAN
Andrea Barattini, Donna Bobadilla aka "Mama”, Emily Perkins. Vanessa Perkins, Liliana Perkins, Jason Perkins

that is exactly what we’re looking for; a well-established place with long-term employees and a great location.” That became our first choice by a very, very wide margin.

Prescott Now: Do you plan on making any changes at Papa’s?

Jason Perkins: We’re not looking to reinvent the wheel here. And why would anybody in that scenario of Papa’s? We just want to honor what they’ve done and put our hands on it, without changing a whole lot.

Mama was nice enough to make me a personalized recipe book, which they have never made for anyone, ever. And they didn’t even have recipes written down, it was just Mama doing it. We’re going to keep making the sauces and everything the same way.

Prescott Now: How are you going to make it your own?

Vanessa Perkins: We genuinely care about creating an exceptional experience for our

guests. Our goal is to enhance the ambiance and ensure every detail contributes to a warm and inviting atmosphere, I want to share my talent and contribute to the community by creating a dining experience that reflects exceptional service and genuine hospitality.

Jason Perkins: While we strive to bring our own unique touch, we also recognize the importance of preserving the elements that have already made the restaurant special. We will introduce weekend specials that allow me to share some of my creative ideas I have but not have to change anything that’s already established.

We plan to focus on improving the comfort of the seating arrangements. We want our customers to feel truly relaxed and at ease while they enjoy their meals. By introducing cozy booths and perhaps even some plush seating options. We understand that the

presentation plays a crucial role in the dining experience. We have already taken steps to elevate our service and presentation, but we are committed to going even further. We will invest in new plates, glassware, so that every dish and beverage is showcased beautifully, adding a touch of sophistication to the overall experience.

Prescott Now: What would you like the community to know about you and Papa’s?

Vanessa Perkins: Papa's is not just a business to us; it's a legacy that we are proud to carry forward. We pour our hearts into every aspect of Papa's, from the quality of our products to the experience we provide for our customers.

We are immensely grateful for the hard work and dedication of Papa's staff. They are the backbone of the operation and deserve recognition as we could not be here without them.

We all know about the bandits and the bad boys, the gunfighters and goons, but not the women who held it all together with grit and spit. The reality is plain: there never would have been a settled West without the women – Native and Mexican women here first; Black and White women who followed – all bravely staking their lives in these unknown badlands. But they’ve never gotten their due.

Wednesday, October 4th · 6:00pm · $20

Wyatt Earp, Presenter

The setting is in a Denver, Colorado jail cell, where Bat Masterson and Governor Frederick W. Pitkin have put Doc in protective custody for a few hours. This is after Doc and the Earps have left Arizona for Colorado. Unfortunately for Doc, a few hours have turned into a few days. To say the least, Doc is not very happy about this. He is angry with the jailor, who is ignoring his needs. Out of boredom and frustration, Doc begins bantering with the other prisoners. You, the audience are the other prisoners.

Cruise In for the Veterans 11th Annual Car Show

April 22 turned out to be a perfect day for cruising among the tons of shiny cars and motorcycles in Findlay Toyota Center’s parking lot in Prescott Valley. The new location made room for the new motorcycle section and more than 500 entries into an event that’s grown to be the largest show of its kind in Northern Arizona. Raffle prizes, a silent auction, food, music and free McDonald’s snacks for kids were offered throughout the day. Only veterans were eligible to vote for the winners and several booths from groups offering services to veterans were set up. More than $30,000 was raised for local organizations that help veterans in need.

SPRUCE UP YOUR DAY WITH

Groom Creek Loop Hike

People come to Prescott, especially from the desert, to see tall ponderosas, shady trails, creeks with running water, colorful wildflowers in spring, maybe some snow in the winter, lots of wildlife and a cheery hometown feel.

Spruce Mountain is the ideal place to find almost everything you’re looking for in a Prescott trip, all of it accessible through the popular Groom Creek Loop Trail No. 307. Its circular path brings users up to its summit, which affords spellbinding views of Prescott, Granite Mountain, Chino Valley and many other expanses of our beautiful region.

It’s also one good workout, with a 1,200-foot elevation gain and lots of challenging surfaces to test your core and balance. Despite its popularity, there are other times (particularly during the week) where it’s a perfect place to find some peace and a refuge from the busyness of everyday life.

As with many loop hikes that go up the side of a mountain, the direction you decide to hike will have a big impact on your experience. From the trailhead, if you head to the right you’ll be heading in a counterclockwise direction that will give you a more gradual, meandering ascent to the top with opportunities for wildlife and horizon watching, which will take you through the majority of the loop.

Hikers and runners looking for a more intense cardio workout heading uphill and mountain bikers looking for longer downhill action can turn to the left for a steeper uphill climb. Either way you see lots of ponderosas and Douglas firs, the latter of which may have been mistaken for spruce by whoever named the mountain.

Whatever way you get there, the views from around the base of the watchtower are splendid and get even more so if the tower happens to be open for public use.

GROOM CREEK LOOP TRAIL NO. 307

You reach this gorgeous trail by taking Mt. Vernon Street in downtown Prescott south for about 7 miles as it becomes Senator Highway, passes Goldwater Lake and rolls through the picturesque community of Groom Creek. The trailhead sign will be on your left, across the street from Groom Creek Horse Camp. Given its location it’s not surprising a lot of horseback riders use the trail along with hikers and mountain bikers, so you need to be mindful of how to interact with these users in particular. Horses should always be given the right of way, with other users slowing down and pulling to the side of the trail. Say hello

and ask the rider what you should do if you’re not sure.

Don’t stand silently, but you also shouldn’t speed past the horse, yell or do anything else that might spook the horse. If you’re approaching the horse from behind, announce yourself well in advance and ask the rider what you should do.

Parking fees: None

Uses: Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding

Distance: 8.7 miles

Level of difficulty: Moderate to difficult

Elevation: 5,500 feet to 7,700 feet

Library Summertime Partnerships

Benefit Prescott Kids!

Summer programs for children at the library are not only free, but robust and varied! Besides the standard favorite events like Storytimes, book clubs, book battles, and performers like Wildman Phil, we offer other unique activities because of partnerships with community groups.

One partnership we value greatly is with our Prescott Art Docents. For many years, the Art Docents ran an Art in June program for children where they introduced a variety of artists and then created art projects using artistic tools and techniques. For the past two summers, Prescott Art Docents have taken an active role during our weekly drop-in crafts on Tuesdays and bring their creative projects to many more children.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's STEM Outreach is another community partnership we have worked with and enjoyed during our summer programming. For the last three years, ERAU’s STEM Outreach has provided STEM kits and science programming for children. This summer’s science line up included a program with telescopes and learning more about the sun. The second science program, learning to detect electricity in space, will be held on Thursday, July 27 at 2pm. After each program, ERAU provides STEM kits for participants to take home and practice what they’ve learned.

Prescott Public Library families and kids reap great benefits from these wonderful partnerships. We look forward to many more summers with both these organizations to provide educational, fun, and quality programming for the children in our Prescott community.

Celebrate reading and enjoy free fantastic programing at Prescott Public Library. Summer activities and programs continues through July 22 and end with a POP! Enjoy the BubbleManiacs and refreshments on the library lawn on Saturday, July 22 at 2 pm.

Are things looking up for the Quad Cities housing market?

Prescott, AZ – June 6th, 2023 –Total sales and new listings both declined again last month, but the data showed some promising signs according to the housing report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).

Total home sales fell last month to 346, a 13.9% drop from the previous month. However, the median sold price showed no change last month across the area and the year-to-date (January through May) median sold price for the entirety of the Quad Cities also showed no change at 0.0%, a promising sign that market stabilization may be on the horizon.

Months of inventory continued to rise across all four regions last month,

increasing from only 1.9 months in April 2023 to 3.1 months in May, a 62.3% jump. "Affordability challenges certainly remain and continue to hold back contract signings,” said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun, “but a sizeable increase in housing inventory will be critical to get more Americans moving."

With that in mind, the increase in active inventory in May 2023 rose across all areas in the Quad Cities by 42.1% overall for a total of 1,077 active listings on the market. Prescott led the pack with 46.2%, followed by Chino Valley (27.6%) and Dewey-Humboldt (22.8%). Prescott Valley, though posting the lowest numbers of all the regions last month, still added double

digit gains in inventory at 19.9%.

“Now is the time when the local insight and market expertise of your REALTOR® will be indispensable,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President. “Knowing how to interpret these market fluctuations is something we prepare for and are ready to communicate to every client we serve,” Humphrey added.

Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.
