welcome

D

ear guests, I welcome you on board our fl ight and wish you an enjoyable journey in the care of our crew members. I hope our services will be up to your satisfaction, and the reason you will always choose to travel on board RJ. Firstly I would like to wish you a Happy New Year! I wish to reassure you that RJ, which celebrated its 52nd anniversary on 15 December, continues to exert all efforts to keep improving its air and ground services, while continuing to introduce new, modern aircraft to secure your comfort. This enables us to compete with successful regional and international airlines. A look at RJ’s history helps you see the rapid development it achieved over its five decades, in terms of diversity of services and modernization of the travelling procedures – from the moment passengers book their tickets until they leave our aircraft. RJ is a real success story. It was always capable of overcoming challenges with determination, working hard to ensure a bright future. This is corroborated by figures comparing its performance in the year it was established with today. The hard work paid off; now in its 52nd year, our company is one of Jordan’s most important economic pillars. RJ occupies a prominent position in the Jordanian economy in terms of assets, revenues, human resources and services provided to different sectors. This is especially relevent to tourism and import and export, bringing in much needed hard currency. At the same time, the airline spreads Jordanian culture to the world, and is a medium that connects people being part of its vision and strategic goals since its establishment. In 1964, Alia – as RJ was then named – was operating just two aircraft (Dart Herald and DC7), had 250 employees and was flying only to Kuwait, Cairo and Beirut, and achieved modest results.

That year, it transported less than 100,000 passengers. Now, RJ operates a fleet of 27 modern aircraft serving 56 destinations on four continents, transporting millions of passengers. These achievements are due to the efforts of the trained and qualified employees in the airline industry, including pilots, engineers, technicians, in-fl ight attendants and frontline staff. They all work hard to maintain the company’s prominent position among the leading international carriers of the oneworld alliance, which RJ became part of in 2007. Royal Jordanian will continue to improve its services, renew its fleet and broaden its route network to better serve its customers. In 2015, the company started reaching destinations in the region (Tabuk, Najaf and Ankara) and in Asia (Jakarta), followed by Guangzhou, China’s busiest trade hub. We are confident that you, our valued customers, can feel the efforts we exert for your satisfaction and confidence. Your wellbeing is our top goal, part of Jordan’s reputation as a hospitable country that thrives under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

Sweet treats in store

The Delights Shop is focused on creating healthy treats using natural Medjool dates from the Jordan Valley,

Zeid Kawar, owner of The Delights Shop, explains how combining Mejdool dates with Belgian chocolate is a recipe for success

combined with exquisite Belgian chocolate. We wanted to do something completely different using the very traditional staple of Arabic culture – and then we had some real fun experimenting with the recipes by using Belgian chocolate. The Delights Shop was first opened in 2001 in Sweifieh as a retail outlet for the Progressive Agricultural Investment Company, our family plantation cultivating Medjool dates. Today there are 9,600 date palms on eight plantations. We currently have three stores: our flagship branch in the commercial area of Abdoun, which opened in 2007, plus later we opened outlets in City Mall and Taj Mall. We produce many delicious varieties. Among the most popular are the Lite Delights: dates stuffed with walnuts, almonds or mandarin, among other fillings. Our Dark and White Delights are filled with

The new Jordan Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ scheme is the best way for visitors to maximise their Jordan experience during a visit to the Kingdom. Perks of the pass include skipping the ticketing queues, and free entry into Jordan’s best destinations, including Petra. It also waives the tourist visa fees, if the Jordan Pass is purchased before arrival to Jordan, and visitors are staying at least three nights. The range of attractions available to pass-holders is vast and varied, from natural beauty to biblical history and medieval artistry. AnkArA Often overshadowed by glamorous Istanbul, Turkey’s capital Ankara has too long been overlooked as a stopover destination. Alongside the blockbuster Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, it offers picturesque streets of renovated Ottoman houses, interesting small mosques, glitzy antique shops and inviting cafes, as well as a cluster of smaller museums covering everything from technology to textiles. No trip to Ankara would be complete without a visit to Anıtkabir, the monumental tomb-memorial to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey’s first president and the man who made the inland city the capital of the new Turkish republic in 1923.

footbAll HRH Prince Ali of Jordan is a key player in world football, and his crucial bid to become FIFA president in February’s election could be his winning goal

F

Words

IFA governs the most popular sport in the world, and therefore it should be the leader in good governance,” said HRH Prince Ali bin al-Hussein in a recent interview. In May 2015, the 40-year-old Prince threw his hat into the ring for the FIFA presidential elections in a bid to topple Sepp Blatter – a man almost 40 years his senior, who had been president for 17 years and had stood unopposed since 2002. Blatter won the election but resigned three days later during a flurry of police investigations and highprofile arrests of other senior FIFA officials. With strong support of major football associations, the Prince announced that he would stand again – this time alongside four other candidates – in February’s special election. When Prince Ali’s nomination was first announced, there would have been many people around the world who had not previously heard his name.

Emma Levine

Yet for those in the world of football, especially in Asia, it would have come as no surprise. His name has been synonymous with the development of the game, ever since he became head of the Jordan Football Association in 1999, aged just 24. Age has certainly been no bar in his success, and by 2011 his stature rose to a seat on FIFA’s powerful Executive Committee as vice president. The son of the late King Hussein and Queen Alia of Jordan, and half-brother of King Abdullah II, this is a man with a wealth of world experience. After attending school in Amman, he went on to attend the prestigious Salisbury School in Connecticut, and trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, England, where all officers in the British Army are trained. It was here that he earned his military free fall parachute wings, and later served as a specialist parachutist in Jordan’s special forces. Perhaps it was his military training that has prepared him for the sporting battles ahead. j

“Grassroots development is the most important thing,” says Prince Ali 26

Prince Ali has experienced football at all levels, from his prominent position in the football’s governing body, to developing the game in some of Asia’s most remote regions. Just one year after becoming FIFA vice president, he led a successful campaign in 2012 to end FIFA’s ban on the hijab (Islamic headcovering) in the women’s game. This was a huge cultural breakthrough which subsequently enabled promising teams such as Iran to participate in international competition – previously in 2011 they had been disqualified from an Olympic qualifying match in Jordan because their attire didn’t meet FIFA regulations. Also in 2012, Prince Ali founded the Asian Football Development Project (AFDP), a youth-

Also under the Prince’s guidance, the AFDP supported the launch of the under-16 women’s league in Palestine, and the launch of seven girls’ grassroots centres around Jordan. In Cambodia, AFDP works with teenage girls to fight human trafficking with football. One of Prince Ali’s most notable achievements is helping to win the vote for Jordan to host the 2016 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, taking place in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa in October. Qualification rounds in the coming months will confirm the final 16 teams from around the world to participate in this major tournament. The Prince has admirers far and wide. In an interview last year with Royal Wings, Jordan’s national goalkeeper Amer Shafi had nothing but high praise. “Prince Ali has played an important role in the advancement of Jordanian football on a global level, even prior to taking on the position of FIFA vice president. He has always shown unrivalled support in developing the sport at local level, including women’s football, which has brought Jordanian football into the limelight. His position in FIFA representing Asia has elevated the prestige of the sport here. This has boosted the confidence of the national team and resulted in great achievements, including reaching the 2014 World Cup’s Asian Qualifiers.” With the Prince at the helm of the Jordan FA, the national team – ‘Al-Nashama’, meaning ‘The Chivalrous’ – has gone from strength to strength. 27

Most recently it beat the highly fancied Australia in the qualifiers for the Asian group stage of the 2018 World Cup. So what is his pledge for world football? “Grassroots development is the most important thing that we have. I’ve tried my best as the national association president in Jordan, where we had our own grassroots system in areas across the country. We have to give other countries the opportunities to do the same.” Even if Prince Ali doesn’t win the presidential election on 26 February, there is no doubting his commitment. He is a football man through and through: “I want to be the person who brings the best ideas for change and the person who implements them. Our fans and players deserve that, worldwide.”

See the city through scenes of famous films, from the glamorous Three Coins in a Fountain to James Bond’s Spectre words

Adrian Mourby

I

felt I knew Rome long before I ever visited, and it wasn’t because of the ancient history we studied at school. It was because of the movies. The rococo Trevi Fountain was commissioned in 1629 by Pope Urban VIII, but it’s famous today because of La Dolce Vita (1960) and so many other films since. The 18th-century Spanish Steps were built with money bequeathed by a French diplomat so that Trinità dei Monti church could be linked to the square below, but it’s best known nowadays from its appearance in Roman Holiday (1953). There is no better place to start a cinematic tour of Rome than this gracious flight of steps, which provides a panoramic view south-west over the city. This was where Audrey Hepburn ate an ice cream incognito in Roman Holiday ; where Julia Roberts wandered in Eat Pray Love (2010); and where the coffin of the poet John Keats was carried in the film Bright Star (2009). It’s also, famously, where Matt Damon, as The Talented Mr Ripley (1999), pulled off one of his most audacious cons. Walking north from here along Via del Babuino towards Piazza del Popolo, I’ll pass Via Margutta, a small side street where the director Federico Fellini and the writer Truman Capote lived at different times, and where Gregory Peck’s character lodged in Roman Holiday. Also on the right – actually on the corner with Piazza del Popolo – is the glamorous Hotel de Russie where George Clooney and friends stayed while in Rome making Ocean’s Twelve (2004). The broad expanse of the piazza with its two i matching churches and central obelisk featured Trevi Fountain, in one of the great defining Italian films of the a starring role in many great films 1960s, La Dolce Vita. Escaping the ever-present photographers, Marcello Mastroianni and Anouk l The glamorous Aimée drove to this empty square one night Hotel de Russie (she at the wheel – and still wearing sunglasses). f Tom Hanks crossed also this piazza when visiting Bridge over the River Tiber St Maria del Popolo church in search of pagan and leading to Castel Christian symbolism in Angels and Demons (2009). j Sant’Angelo

29

From here I could walk up Pincian Hill to Villa Borghese Park, which also featured in Eat Pray Love and in Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love (2012) as the garden where Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page hook up, but instead I detour south towards the river Tiber. Here I can follow its southward course along Lungotevere (waterfront) a broad channel built in the 19th century to absorb the Tiber when it flooded. It was along here that James Bond recently raced his car in Spectre (2015) before pressing the ejector button, and also featured in the 2014 Oscar-winning fi lm The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza). If you continue south down Lungotevere you’ll pass the modern Ara Pacis museum designed by Richard Meir. (It’s a controversially modern building which hasn’t featured in any fi lms yet, but is so stylish it should.) From here I cross the Tiber on Ponte Umberto bridge and turn left in front of the Piazza dei Tribunali, which features, like so much of Rome, in Ocean’s Twelve. Then I’m suddenly in front of the mighty Castel Sant’Angelo, which finds its way into many fi lms, including Angels and Demons, and Plácido Domingo’s 1976 fi lm of Tosca, based on Puccini’s opera. It’s a massive rock of a building that was originally constructed as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. Crossing Piazza Pia I’m now at the top of Via della Conciliazione facing towards St Peter’s Basilica. It’s a long road along down which James Bond zoomed in Spectre followed by the high speed Mr Hinx before they both turned off sharply to the right (because no fi lming is allowed on actual church property in Rome). Rather than head towards the Vatican, I cross back over the Tiber on Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II and walk south down Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. You could find the bridge across the Tiber (Ponte Sisto) where Bond landed after he ejected from his car, some way south of here. Vittorio Emanuele II is another very long Roman street ideal for car chases (it served as such in Angels and Demons) but it’s also the site of the Santa Andrea della Valle church, which not only features in the 30

Domingo version of Tosca but is where the original action of Tosca’s first act was set by Puccini. Turning left off this thoroughfare and bearing north along Corso del Rinascimento, I come to Piazza Navona, a beautiful baroque rectangular space that was built round an Ancient Roman race track (hence its shape). Its mighty Fountain of the Four Rivers featured in Angels and Demons as one of the Altars of Science, and in the 1963 Italian comedy film Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow as the view from Sophia Loren’s apartment. Here Matt Damon and Jude Law were at lunch in The Talented Mr Ripley when Philip Seymour Hoffman arrived in his car while making lewd comments about Italian women. Julia Roberts sat here too in Eat Pray Love in order to eat her ice cream and appear on film posters around the world. Leaving the piazza by Via del Salvatore and then Via Giustiniani, I arrive at Piazza della Rotonda and Pantheon, the great circular church of Ancient Rome that was completed by Emperor Hadrian in 126AD. It also featured in Ocean’s Twelve with Brad Pitt and Catherine ZetaJones’ characters meeting at a café here (something that at the time posed huge problems for crowd control in the piazza). Tom Hanks found a pivotal clue in Angels and Demons here and Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn passed by too. Bringing this movie tour to a close I stroll along Via del Seminario and across Via del Corso to the iconic Trevi Fountain, famed for its role in Three Coins in a Fountain (1954), Roman Holiday and La Dolce Vita, the film in which Anita Ekberg made screen history wading under its cascading waters. The scene was repeated in the 2014 romantic comedy Elsa and Fred in which Christopher Plummer took an ailing Shirley MacLaine to the fountain so she could achieve her greatest wish to play that scene for real. The city of Rome is even more romantic in real life, but take your cue from the movies and you won’t go far wrong. 31

Inaugurated by President Woodrow Wilson on 25 August 1916, the National Park System covers 409 sites and more than 84 million acres of the USA and its overseas territories. The world’s first national park, established in 1872, Yellowstone contains half of the world’s geysers, alongside forests, grasslands and rivers. It is great for wildlife viewing, with grizzly bears, wolves and herds of bison among resident species. In winter, you can take rides to track wolves through the snow, amid trees coated in frozen steam from hot springs.

A gift from France to the US, the ‘Lady Liberty’ national monument has been a symbol of freedom and democracy at New York Harbor’s entrance since 1886. Ferries to Liberty Island also stop at the historic 27-acre immigration portal Ellis Island. You can buy tickets to the pedestal and museum, plus the crown platform atop the statue’s head. The view is amazing – well worth the 377-step climb.

America’s most visited national park is named for the mist that hangs over the vast range, its forested crest running along peaks ranging up to the 6,643ft-high Clingmans Dome mountain.
