Still Woody After All These Years and he’s still surprising us, catching us out, confusing us, frustrating us.

2

Woody Allen was 80 years old on December 1. When I asked him recently how he was going to celebrate the occasion, he replied: “I hope to sleep right through it.” It’s a typical Allen response - witty, weary, whiny. But the thing is, it’s also a lie. Woody doesn’t sleep, except at night. “I’m not a napper,” he also told me. “I get up, do some exercise on my treadmill, and then I’m ready to write, just like I always have done, for most of these years.” We’ve got Woody’s latest movie on board. Irrational Man isn’t your typical Woody Allen movie, but then we forget he hasn’t actually made one of those for nearly 20 years. I don’t know what a typical Woody film is anymore, except that it’ll be a surprise. The new film is a light philosophical thriller with an undercurrent of darkness and murder. Oh, one of those Woody Allen movies. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as maverick, alcoholic philosophy lecturer Abe Lucas who arrives at a new teaching post and is immediately a source of obsession for two women: a bored, horny science teacher (Parker Posey) and a smitten student (Emma Stone, in her second consecutive Woody film, following Magic in the Moonlight).

been a bit of Woody-fest for me. I wrote a book, Woody Allen: Film by Film, which involved me watching every single one of his films again, attempting to trace the development of this unique artist all the way through, from the “early, funny films” (Sleeper still has me in fits of laughter every time) to the subtle pleasures of The Purple Rose of Cairo and Radio Days and the deeper philosophical waters of Crimes and Misdemeanors and Husbands and Wives.

Woody Allen’s films have changed the way we look at life, and I don’t think we can ask anything more of an artist

He’s made a film a year, every year, since 1969 - a remarkable, uninterrupted run which shows no signs of abating. He’s already made another film to be released this year, an American period movie - maybe 1920s, or 1930s? starring Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg and Steve Carrell. He’s also written his first comedy series, which will premier on Amazon. “I don’t have a computer or pad, so I won’t be able to actually watch it, but that’s fine,” he told me. “I never watch my films anyway.” I must confess here that the past year has

We talked for nearly an hour, about his work, his music choices, his actresses, being funny, and his views on life. I think he keeps working to keep himself busy. He says if he’s writing or directing a movie, he doesn’t have much time to ponder the pointlessness of existence and the meaninglessness of life, something he swears has been bothering him since he was five years old. He can be charming company, if you don’t mind the conversation touching on nothingness and the expanding universe every now and then. But then, just as he made that list of “things that make life worth living” at the end of Manhattan, you do get to talk about jazz, good food, movies and beautiful women, and suddenly it doesn’t, like Julie Andrews once sang, feel so bad. So I’ll keep watching Woody Allen movies for as long as he’ll make them. To do so is to disappear into another world, a parallel universe where people talk and behave just a bit differently but really not so far from us, or at least parts of us. Woody’s people are foolish and silly, but they’re always trying to do right.

Abe suddenly gets an idea and plots to commit the perfect murder, to see if he can get away with it, really, philosophically speaking. It’s the intellect of the act that fires him up, and he certainly rediscovers his verve, something the funky rhythms of Ramsey Lewis on the soundtrack signal rather well. I make this Woody’s 50th movie (he counts 45, but then he discounts the ones he didn’t entirely write and direct from scratch, even the marvellous Play It Again, Sam) and he’s still surprising us, catching us out, confusing us, frustrating us. Of course Irrational Man isn’t as good as Annie Hall, or Manhattan, or Hannah and her Sisters, but it’s a very different film probing very different themes about chance and morality as well as the excitement of romantic thought.

remembered, are still very happily together. I met Woody Allen for my book just after the world premiere of Irrational Man at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. He was lively and brighteyed and I said how happy I was to see him in fine health. “Not as happy as I am, I can tell you,” he retorted.

Irrational Man

Then the turbulent 1990s which gave us a brilliant backstage bauble such as Bullets over Broadway and the bitter ripostes such as Deconstructing Harry and Celebrity, before the misfires of Curse of the Jade Scorpion and Hollywood Ending until the European odyssey and reboot began with Match Point in London, a phase which saw the staunch Manhattanite journey through Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris (actually one of his finest films) until that amazing Cate Blanchett performance in Blue Jasmine. So here we are again, another Woody Allen film that’s splitting opinion, as so many of them have over the last 25 years, at least since he shocked the world by leaving his long-term partner Mia Farrow for her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn back in 1992. The couple, it should be

In our chat, Woody complained that he felt he hadn’t really influenced anyone, unlike Martin Scorsese or the impact of Star Wars. I argued that he’d influenced my record collection and my - sometimes unsuccessful - choices in women. He seemed pleased with that, although told me any troubles in love that I might have had were not his fault, thanks. Woody Allen’s influence is probably greater than he knows. He may not have changed cinema forever (though I reckon Annie Hall has influenced ever romantic comedy since and without it, we wouldn’t have had Friends, Seinfeld, Girls…) but he has influenced the way we talk, live and behave. More than the shocking jump cut or the awesome tracking shot, Woody Allen’s films have changed the way we look at life, and I don’t think we can ask anything more of an artist, in whichever field they’re expressing themselves. Yes, we’ll keep watching Woody Allen films because, well, as Alvy says at the end of Annie Hall, we need the eggs. Words by Jason Solomons

99 Homes

Español, Français, 中文字幕 Drama, 110 mins Director: Ramin Bahrani Starring: Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern

The Age Of Adaline 15

Full of fury and passion, 99 Homes is a searing thriller about a father (Garfield) who is evicted from his home by a greedy real-estate broker (Shannon). Fuelled by hatred for the broker he nevertheless accepts an offer to work for him – and is soon tempted by the pleasures of the dark side.

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Romance, 113 mins 12 Director: Lee Toland Krieger Starring: Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford

No, she’s not a vampire, but even so Adaline (Lively) has stayed 29-years-old for eight decades. In hiding to protect her secret, she finally begins to come out of her shell when she falls for Huisman and then meets his parents (Ellen Burstyn and Ford). Romantic and affecting, you might find you ‘have something in your eye’ by the end of this one.

“An easy recommendation, with director and co-writer Ramin Bahrani delivering a provocative, visceral, sometimes heartbreakingly relevant drama/thriller.” Chicago Sun-Times on 99 Homes

Aloha Romance, 105 mins Director: Cameron Crowe Starring: Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams

12

Crowe, the director who brought us Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, knows his way around a romance. So when Cooper’s military contractor returns to Honolulu, reconnects with an old flame (McAdams) while also falling for a new one (Stone), what emerges is a sweet, quirky and beautifully acted love story bearing Crowe’s distinctive touch.

Ant-Man Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 117 mins Director: Peyton Reed Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll

Taking a break from the usual epic approach beloved of Marvel, Ant-Man thinks small, while also adding a dose of comedy to the mix. Not only that, but with Rudd as a conman who must shrink in order to pull off a most unusual theft, it may well be the world’s first Super Hero heist movie. It’s certainly the most entertaining. Playing in 3D Audio.

12

Black Mass

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Biopic, 123 mins Director: Scott Cooper Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch

15

A thunderingly good performance from Depp helps propel this true-life gangster movie straight into the pantheon of the greats. He plays James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, who while his brother Bill (Cumberbatch) makes the best of a political career, pursues a life of crime, evading capture to become one of the most dangerous hoodlums in US history.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 104 mins Director: Doug Ellin Starring: Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jeremy Piven

Entourage

Playing the same comedic, bromance-heavy notes as its TV counterpart, this big-screen adaptation finds movie star Vincent and his ‘boys’ Eric, Turtle and Johnny tearing things up in style-and-starobsessed LA. Brash, loud and very funny, it may have been given a rough ride by critics, but with more than 50 celebrity cameos, glamorous cars and locales, Entourage is never boring.

Bridge Of Spies Español, Français, Deutsch Thriller, 135 mins Director: Steven Spielberg Starring: Tom Hanks, Alan Alda, Amy Ryan

12

Spielberg’s Cold War thriller finds Hanks playing an attorney who must negotiate a prisoner exchange with the Russians. A superb script, part-written by the Coen brothers, wrings every last drop of intrigue from a beautifully told tale and builds up to a masterpiece finale of sustained suspense.

Disney Tomorrowland: A World Beyond Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 130 mins Director: Brad Bird Starring: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie

12

Based on – and this is probably a first – a zone in Disneyland, and fired by the prodigious imagination of its director Bird, Tomorrowland is a riot of ideas and adventure. The plot revolves around Robertson discovering a portal to another world – but to say much more would be to spoil what is one of the year’s most colourful and consistently surprising family friendly blockbusters.

Everest

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 121 mins Director: Baltasar Kormákur Starring: Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal

12

Apologies to anyone trying to quit biting their nails – this gripping true-life thriller won’t do you any good at all. Set on the morning of May 10, 1996, it centres on a group of climbers who must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds. Tense. And then some.

Fantastic Four Action, 100 mins Director: Josh Trank Starring: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan

The Diary of a Teenage Girl Deutsch, Español Drama, 102 mins Director: Marielle Heller Starring: Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, Kristen Wiig

18

Set in San Francisco in 1976, this unapologetically frank look at teenage sexuality, it boasts a standout performance from Powley as 15-year-old Minnie, who experiences a profound awakening when she loses her virginity. The problem is the guy in question – her mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend, Monroe (Skarsgård).

12

Brand-new new origin story for the quartet from New York, who teleport to an alternate universe and find themselves transformed into superheroes. First the foursome must come to terms with their incredible new powers. Next they must save the world from their former friend turned enemy, Dr Doom (Toby Kebbell).

Far From The Madding Crowd Romance, 119 mins Director: Thomas Vinterberg Starring: Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts

12

This critically adored mounting of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel is everything you want of its source material: romantic, windswept and ravishing to look at it. Set in 1870s Dorset – the bleak English countryside so beloved of Hardy – it stars Mulligan as the heiress courted by three men but still determined to forge her own path in life. 7

Fast & Furious 7

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 137 mins Director: James Wan Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jason Statham

Grandma Español, Français, Deutsch Drama, 79 mins 15 Director: Paul Weitz Starring: Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden

12

Though tinged with sadness (the film is dedicated to star Paul Walker, who died in a car accident prior to its release), Fast & Furious 7 remains the very best of guilty pleasures. As usual the story (Vin Diesel wants revenge) is a mere excuse for chrome-plated, turbo-fuelled eye candy. Are they fast? Indeed they are. Are they furious? Absolutely livid.

Acclaimed comedydrama starring Tomlin as lesbian poet Elle, whose granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up in need of emergency cash. Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash, but their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.

Playing in 3D Audio.

The Gift

中文字幕 Thriller, 108 mins Director: Joel Edgerton Starring: Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Joel Edgerton

15

Bateman and Hall are married couple Simon and Robyn who, after moving back to Simon’s old stomping ground, bump into an old classmate, Gordo (Edgerton). Pretty soon, Gordo is inveigling himself into their lives, leaving them doorstep presents and dropping round uninvited. As his visits become increasingly unsettling, Robyn begins to question the relationship between Gordo and Simon and a horrifying, decades-old secret begins to emerge.

Inside Out

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Animation, 102 mins U Directors: Ronaldo Del Carmen, Pete Docter Voices of: Amy Poehler, Lewis Black, Bill Hader

In the tradition of Up, Wall-E and Toy Story 3, Inside Out is Pixar at its boundary-pushing best. Funny and emotionally affecting, it takes place almost entirely in the head of 11-year-old Riley, who is controlled by emotions living in her brain – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – which then come into conflict as they try to navigate Riley through a new start in life. 8

Hotel Transylvania 2 Español, Français, Deutsch Animation, 89 mins Director: Genndy Tartakovsky Starring: Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg

U

Plenty of fun for the younger members of your tribe, as the irrepressible Sandler returns in this animated sequel. Once again, he’s the caring, sharing vampire (who’s also trying to run a guest house) and in this instalment he and his monster mates must keep Mavis from leaving the hotel.

The Intern

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Comedy, 121 mins 12 Director: Nancy Meyers Starring: Robert De Niro, Rene Russo Anne Hathaway

One to make you go, ‘Aw…’ The Intern is a heart-warming comedy about a 70-year-old widower Ben (De Niro) so bored by retirement that becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). Quickly the two are learning important life lessons from each other.

movies

Legend Biopic, 131 mins 18 Director: Brian Helgeland Starring: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Taron Egerton

It’s not the first time the story of the notorious gangsters The Kray Twins has been adapted for film – Spandau Ballet’s Kemp brothers made a memorable fist of it in 1990 – but Legend may well be the most novel. Why? Because Hardy plays both twins – the scheming Reggie and the more unhinged and unpredictable Ronnie. In a superbly realised 1960s London – full credit to director Helgeland – Reggie must try and control his more violent brother, as well as attending to his marriage to wife Frances (Browning). Few actors are as intense and committed as Hardy, and as you can imagine, he’s great in both roles, handling the movie’s mix of style, comedy and gut-wrenching violence, with equal aplomb.

Irrational Man

Français, Deutsch, 日本語 Drama, 95 mins Director: Woody Allen Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Parker Posey

12

It’s a match made in offbeat moviemaking heaven – director Allen and star Phoenix, together at last. The latter plays Abe, a jaded philosophy teacher who has a relationship with a student (Stone), before an overheard conversation leads him to hatch a murder plot and pretty soon the bored professor has rediscovered his mojo.

The Legend of Barney Thomson Comedy, 96 mins 15 Director: Robert Carlyle Starring: Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson, Ray Winstone

The feature film directorial debut of actor Carlyle is a ‘hilariously gruesome’ and ‘deliciously macabre’ black comedy about a mediocre Glaswegian barber (Carlyle) who embarks on a new life as a serial killer. Support comes from Ray Winstone, Ashley Jensen and Emma Thompson, who is outstanding as Barney’s mother. 10

Mad Max Fury Road

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 120 mins 15 Director: George Miller Starring: Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult, Charlize Theron

The long version of the plot goes like this: when Imperator Furiosa (Theron) attempts to free the captive wives of Immortan Joe, Max (Hardy) finds himself at the centre of an epic cross-desert pursuit. The short version is this: there’s a chase. And what a chase it is! We also have the original Mad Max on board too! Playing in 3D Audio.

Jurassic World

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 124 mins Director: Colin Trevorrow Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins

12

The thrill ride of the year finds man-of-themoment Pratt heading the cast as a new Jurassic theme park opens on the site of the original. All goes well until the park’s newest attraction - the genetically modified, T. rex dwarfing Indominus rex predator dino escapes and the bodies start piling up, despite dino-wrangler Owen’s (Pratt) warning of the dangers of tinkering with Jurassic genetics. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in the second film, at first it’s ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’, and then it’s running and screaming. Playing in 3D Audio.

movies The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 116 mins Director: Guy Ritchie Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander

12

Cavill, last seen playing Superman, is Solo, the titular U.N.C.L.E. employee, and Hammer his Russian partner. Hired by Grant’s Waverly and ably assisted by Vikander, this pair of unlikely bedfellows spearheads a joint CIA and KGB operation to stop a mysterious criminal organization setting off an atom bomb.

The Lobster 15

Comedy, 118 mins Director: Yorgos Lanthimos Starring: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman

Chances are you won’t see a more unusual film than this all year. A determinedly strange mix of comedy, sci-fi and romance, it’s set in the near future, where single people are taken to The Hotel and forced to either find romance or be transformed into beasts and sent into The Woods. And as if that wasn’t baffling enough, it’s filmed in a strange, unorthodox way that quite frankly defies description. But wait, before you rush off in search of the latest rom-com, give it a try: strange it most definitely is, but it’s also unique and highly entertaining – the kind of film that plays by its own set of very idiosyncratic rules and is all the better for it.

Magic Mike XXL

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Comedy, 115 mins 15 Director: Gregory Jacobs Starring: Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer

Magic Mike: a film about male strippers that, thanks to Tatum’s central performance, brilliant dance scenes and a tongue firmly in its well-toned cheek, was unexpectedly brilliant. This sequel: more of the same as Mike decides to rejoin the Kings of Tampa for a last hurrah, packing his thong and setting off to Myrtle Beach for a stripping convention.

Man Up Español Comedy, 86 mins Director: Ben Palmer Starring: Lake Bell, Simon Pegg, Rory Kinnear

Nancy (Bell) is single, hungover, exhausted by her attempts to find love, and currently on a train to her parents’ wedding anniversary. Before she can get there she runs into runs into 40-year-old divorcee Jack (Pegg), who mistakes her for his blind date.

15

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Sci-Fi, 131 mins Director: Wes Ball Starring: Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario

12

This sequel to last year’s The Maze Runner begins where the last one left off, with Thomas (O’Brien) and pals having escaped the maze. However, they now find themselves in a desolate landscape filled with new obstacles. Overcoming this latest set of challenges will bring them closer towards uncovering WCKD’s shocking plans. 11

The Martian Sci Fi, 141 mins Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor

12

From director Scott and starring Damon in one of his most rewarding roles, The Martian is an enthralling and – literally – cosmic experience. Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, presumed dead after a fierce storm and left on Mars by his crew. He must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and find a way to tell Earth that he is alive.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Drama, 105 mins Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon Starring: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke

Indie hit, Me and Earl And The Dying Girl finds high schooler Greg occupied with three things: hanging out with buddy Earl, shooting parodies of classic movies and trying to be cool – with the emphasis very much on the latter. However, his outlook begins to change when he runs into Rachel, who has just been diagnosed with cancer.

Minions

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Animation, 91 mins Directors: Kyle Balda, Pierre Coffin Voices of: Sandra Bullock, Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm

U

Despicable Me’s Gru takes a back seat for this animated spin-off solely about his little yellow henchmen, the minions. Desperate to serve an evil bigwig, Bob and co. find themselves at the supervillain convention where they soon hook up with the villainous Scarlet Overkill (Bullock). 12

12

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Warning: Contains scenes unsuitable for nervous flyers. 日本語, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 131 mins Director: Christopher McQuarrie Starring: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner

12

In this latest instalment of cinema’s most reliable action franchise, the IMF team are forced to go rogue to prove the existence of an international criminal consortium – and Ethan finds himself on the run from the CIA. Brilliant action, luminous performances. For thrills and spills you can’t go wrong with this one. Playing in 3D Audio.

In 1982, NASA sent an ‘Earth culture’ capsule into space. Unfortunately, aliens misinterpreted the videogames included as an act of war and responded in kind. Now the present day planet must turn to Sandler’s team of ageing game pros to save Earth from Donkey Kong, Pac Man and the like. The result is very funny, weirdly surreal, full of action.

Mistress America Comedy, 84 mins Director: Noah Baumbach Starring: Greta Gerwig, Lola Kirke, Matthew Shear

15

From indie wunderkind Noah Baumbach comes this irresistible comedy about a college freshman, Tracy (Kirke) whose life is turned upside down when she meets her soon-to-be stepsister, the free-spirited Brooke (Gerwig). Gerwig also co-wrote the film, and she’s marvellous in a star-making turn. Like Tracy we can only watch in wonder.

日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 106 mins 12 Director: Chris Columbus Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan

This update of the classic original finds Rockwell and family moving into a new home, only to find it possessed by all manner of demonic spirits. As if supernatural mayhem wasn’t enough, the ghoulies then take the family’s daughter, provoking a fightback of epic dimensions. It is, as you’d expect from producer Sam ‘Evil Dead’ Raimi, very, very scary indeed.

“An enthrawlling piece of entertainment that captures the essence of Fischer’s mad genius.... re-creates the tenor of the times AND works as a legit sports movie” Chicago Sun-Times on Pawn Sacrifice

Mr Holmes

日本語, Français, Deutsch Drama, 101 mins PG Director: Bill Condon Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada

Sherlock Holmes adaptations aren’t exactly thin on the ground, but here’s something a little bit different. McKellen stars as the legendary detective who in the autumn of his years relocates from Baker Street to a farmhouse in Sussex. Though his powers of deduction are diminished and his memory fading, he finds himself with one more case to solve – his own.

Paper Towns Drama, 116 mins 12 Director: Jake Schreier Starring: Nat Wolff, Cara Delevingne, Austin Abrams

Life is all mapped out for Quentin. Until, that is, he meets Margo (Delevingne) and embarks on a momentous evening of fun. However, when Margo goes missing lovelorn Quentin sets off in pursuit, inspired by a series of cryptic messages. Funny and insightful, with a startling performance from a modelturned-actor Delevingne, Paper Towns is a gem.

Pitch Perfect 2

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 115 mins 12 Director: Elizabeth Banks Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld

Last time out, acapella group The Bellas triumphed against all odds. In this sequel, Beca (Kendrick) and pals start out on top but after a disastrous Presidential performance find themselves back in the dumps. Can they reclaim former glories? The jokes come thick and fast, the singing never fails to entertain and the pitch is even more perfect than last time out. Playing in 3D Audio.

Pawn Sacrifice Français, Deutsch, Español Biopic, 115 mins Director: Edward Zwick Starring: Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard

12

With Spider-Man a long way behind him now, Maguire reminds us what a fine, fine actor he is, playing tortured chess genius Bobby Fischer. Real-life events become gripping drama as Fischer is caught between two superpowers when he challenges the Soviet Empire to the world’s most famous and important game of chess. Able support comes from Schreiber but this is Maguire’s show – he’s outstanding. 13

As buildings collapse and tidal waves ram ships into the Golden Gate Bridge, pilot Johnson must locate his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue and Paul Giamatti are among those caught up in the artfully framed devastation. Blockbusters don’t get much more blockbustin’ than this.

Ricki and the Flash

Playing in 3D Audio.

Français, Deutsch, Español Comedy, 101 mins Director: Jonathan Demme Starring: Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Mamie Gummer

12

Streep is brilliant in this warmhearted comedy, playing a mother of three who abandoned her family to pursue her dreams of rock ‘n’ roll stardom. Years later, as she scrapes a living playing gigs at a bar, she decides to make amends and return home. Can she redeem herself and win their hearts?

Scout Drama, 109 mins Director: Laurie Weltz Starring: India Ennenga, James Frecheville, Danny Glover

When 15-year-old Scout’s (Ennenga) estranged father takes her younger sister Lulu, Scout is determined to track down and rescue her little sister, joining up with suicidal mental patient Sam (Frecheville). With great support from the likes of Ellen Burstyn, Jane Seymour and Danny Glover, this is a beautifully drawn coming-of-age tale with a warm heart and a soft centre.

Southpaw Français, Deutsch, Español Action, 124 mins 15 Director: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Oona Laurence Rachel McAdams

Brace yourselves, fight fans, this boxing movie in the grand tradition of Rocky is, as one critic says, ‘an emotional powerhouse’. Much of the credit goes to buffed-up star Gyllenhaal, who brings a raw intensity to the role. He plays boxer Billy Hope who finds himself in the gutter after a family tragedy but then, thanks to the tutelage of coach Titus ‘Tick’ Willis (Forest Whitaker), gets a shot at the world light heavyweight title. 14

Our pals Scooby and the Mystery Machine gang are back and posing as a rock band after a vampire is seen snatching musicians from a concert in Australia. Boasting a slightly lighter tone than more recent Scooby Doo features (i.e. it’s not as scary), this one is perfect for the family’s younger members.

She’s Funny That Way

An affectionate to take on the kind of screwball comedy beloved of Neil Simon and Woody Allen, She’s Funny That Way features an all-star cast whose various romantic entanglements and bed-hopping activities land them in all kinds of hot water. A great ensemble, loads of cameos and tons of laughs – what more can you ask?

movies Sicario Français, Deutsch, Español Drama, 118 mins Director: Denis Villeneuve Starring: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro

In Mexico, ‘sicario’ means hitman, but the question posed by this hard-hitting story of the war against drugs is: Who is the real hitman? At first glance it would seem to be Del Toro’s sad-eyed Alejandro, a man of few words but many bullets. On the other hand maybe it’s Brolin’s FBI team leader, sending troops into action in Juarez, one of the most violent cities on

15

the planet. Or then again, perhaps it’s FBI agent Kate Macer. In a searing, career-best performance from Blunt, Macer is the type who plays it by the book but has her loyalties and ethics tested when she comes up against the ruthless Mexican drug cartels. Terrifying, gripping and eye-opening in equal measure, it all adds up to one of the year’s best thrillers.

“A gripping and tension-packed spin through America’s covert War on Drugs. Prepare to be haunted for a good long time.”

However, when security is compromised, Susan must go into action on the frontline herself, going deep undercover to prevent a world crisis.

As in the first one, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back to 1984 to save Sarah Connor (Game of Thrones’ Clarke) and finds himself allied with the Guardian (Schwarzenegger). Big on spectacle and laughs, it’s a fine addition to one of cinema’s greatest franchises. Playing in 3D Audio. 15

Vacation Trainwreck

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Comedy, 125 mins Director: Judd Apatow Starring: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson

15

Schumer plays Amy, who at the tender age of 13 is told by her father ‘monogamy isn’t realistic’. Fast forward 23 years and Amy is, as she says herself, ‘a modern chick who does what she wants.’ Until, that is, she meets somebody new (Hader). It’s funny, it’s outrageous, and it is most definitely not your average romantic comedy.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 99 mins Directors: John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein Starring: Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo, Ed Helms

15

As much a remake as it is a sequel, this new entry in the National Lampoon’s Vacation series finds Rusty Griswold taking his family on a road trip to Walley World. Needless to say the results are as chaotic and uproariously funny as they ever were, featuring some surprise cameos and a scene with raw sewage that you won’t forget in a hurry.

The Walk

Français, Deutsch, Español Biopic, 123 mins Directors: Robert Zemeckis Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Le Bon, César Domboy

Already the subject of the superb documentary, Man On Wire, Philippe Petit’s 1974 high-wire crossing between the New York World Trade Centre Twin Towers is now given a gripping dramatic treatment. With Back To The Future’s Robert Zemeckis directing, Levitt is on brilliant form as the death-defying high-wire artist who shouldn’t look… oops, too late.

Documentaries

Amy 128 mins

15

Be warned: this portrait of Amy Winehouse, a prodigious talent whose life was cut short by addiction, is by no means an easy viewing experience. Without narration, the tale is told via her own lyrics, scrawled on screen like diary entries, as well as homemovie footage and audio interviews with key players, including her father and Blake Fielder-Civil. Neither come off well, but as footage of stand-up comedians jesting about her deterioration go to show, there was no shortage of bystanders either.

Batkid Begins 87 mins

Prepare to have your faith in humanity restored by this heartwarming feature-length documentary about a five-year-old leukemia sufferer whose wish to be Batman is granted in spectacular style.

Cartel Land 15

100 mins

This riveting, hard-hitting documentary takes a look at two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy – the murderous Mexican drug cartels. The first plucky hero is Dr Jose Mireles, a smalltown physician known as El Doctor, who leads a citizen uprising against the violent Knights Templar drug cartel. Meanwhile in Arizona, a US veteran heads a small paramilitary group whose goal is to stop Mexico’s drug wars from seeping across the US border. Make no mistake, this documentary pulls no punches in its depiction of a violent and ruthless world. But in the capable hands of director Matthew Heineman, it not only offers a glimpse into a hitherto unseen world, but asks us to question the distinction between good and evil. Brilliant stuff.

Banksy Does New York 79 mins

‘The outside is where art should live,’ states Banksy’s website, adding, ‘Don’t we want to live in a world made of art, not just decorated by it?’ True to his word, the elusive graffiti artist announced a monthlong New York ‘residency’ in 2013, unveiling one piece a day. The city’s response was inspiring, with Banksy fans, thrill-seekers, art fans and ordinary Joes all joining the daily ‘treasure hunt’ to find and preserve the artist’s latest public piece. With their efforts documented in this fascinating cornucopia of YouTube videos, Instagram images and more, what emerges is a portrait of a quintessentially modern phenomenon driven by something timeless: the ageold, almost childlike thrill of the chase, and joy of new discovery.

for her campaigning work. Despite the fact that she’s named after an Indian folk hero – a woman who stood up against oppression – Malala is in many ways just an ordinary teenage girl, and there’s a great scene where the documentary-makers catch her Googling pictures of Brad Pitt. In all the ways that count, however, she is utterly extraordinary, and hers is a story of courage and spirit that will bring tears to your eyes.

Much as their name conjures images of peace and relaxation, so the music of Beach House is dream pop designed for floating away. This, their fifth, marks a somewhat back-to-basis approach, but those gorgeous melodies remain present and correct.

This Parisian mix of electronic music and jazz (the joyful, swinging kind of jazz) is a heady, hedonistic brew sure to put you in a party mood. Burlesque to its boots, it’s a decadent, potent cocktail.

To fans of groove-based metal, Clutch need no introduction. Psychic Warfare is the Maryland band’s eleventh album, and usual it seethes with riffs and pulsates with extended, heads-down blues jams. Rock at its most energetic and restless.

Hands up who’s giddy with Stars Wars fever? That’s everyone then. And to keep you in the mood, here’s music from the first three films (the ‘classic’ trilogy), remastered, rereleased and sounding better than ever.

Made In The A.M. Pop

1989 Alternative

The excellent and all-conquering lead single Black Magic sets the tone for this cracking third outing for the ladies of Little Mix. As ever, they combine ballads with toetapping dancefloor fillers – and do it with considerably more style than most.

Dustin Hoffman

The Kinks

In spite of his Aunt Pearl telling him he wasn’t goodlooking enough to be an actor, Dustin Hoffman has created some of the cinema’s greatest performances. Here he talks Kirsty Young through his most treasured musical experiences.

This bumper edition of Kinks hits has been selected by Ray Davies and features the original songs performed in the hit musical Sunny Afternoon. Number ones, Kinks classics and BBC archive material – it’s all here.

If One Direction’s fifth album really does turn out to be their last then at least we have the consolation of knowing they went out on a high. Compensating for the loss of Zayn by upping their game, this is boyband pop at it its most sparkling.

Stephen Fry

First Ladies Of Country Playlist

A classic Desert Island Discs here, with Kirsty Young’s guest Stephen Fry remarkably candid regarding all aspects of his life – including his struggles with mental health issues.

It started as working class roots music and blossomed into one of the most popular entertainment forms of the 20th century. The spirited voices of its first ladies have always struck a chord with its audience and here we celebrate their trailblazing success. From pioneer, Kitty Wells through to Dolly Parton right up to Taylor Swift, sit back and revel in an hour of female crafted Country hits.

Tom Jones Kirsty Young’s castaway is Sir Tom Jones, who insists on taking a bucket and spade to his desert island, as well as choosing eight of his favourite songs to while away the time as he builds his sandcastles.

The man who has made a career out of defying expectations has gone and done it again. Hands up who expected Ryan Adams to release a full-album cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989, and for that album to be one of his best since the classic Gold? Thought not.

Thank you for choosing Virgin Atlantic. We're always looking to improve our service, so if you have recently received a survey (it could have been by SMS or email) it would be great if you could share your experience by completing it for us.

Health advice DVT is more likely to strike if you are immobile for a long time (post-operative patients are at risk), so long-haul flyers should take the following precautions… — Drink lots of fluid and avoid excess alcohol. — Keep your circulation going during the flight by wiggling your toes and ankles, taking a walk up and down the aisle if possible. — Check out the Virgin health video for further health tips.

sustainability

Our New Year’s Resolutions Is the name we give to our sustainability strategy, because we believe that sustainability means changing things for the better. Change is in the Air includes both our environment and community investment programmes.

30% We’ll continue to update our fleet with new, more fuel and carbon efficient aircraft, such as our Boeing 787-9s. These are on average about 30% more fuel and CO2 efficient per flight than the aircraft they are replacing.

We’ll be moving our Head Office to a more energy and carbon efficient building, which will help us meet our ground energy reduction targets for 2020.

We’ll be increasing recycling onboard, including everything from blankets and headsets to cans and newspapers.

We had a busy 2015, with lots of hard work across Virgin Atlantic to meet our sustainability goals. We want to keep this up, so here’s what we’ve got planned for 2016:

15,000 15,000 students from around 550 schools will attend our We Day celebrations at the SSE Arena, London, with charity partner Free The Children. 150 of our staff will also be volunteering.

Thanks to our generous customers, our Change for Children onboard appeal has raised more than £6m so far – we’ll continue to collect foreign currency on all our flights and make sure we help as many young people as we can through our strategic partnership with Free The Children.

We’re taking our partnership with Food Made Good (previously called the Sustainable Restaurant Association) from strength to strength. In 2016, even more of our food will meet our strict sustainability standards. Watch out for more information on board.

Our staff love an adventure – we’ll continue to run, cycle, swim and hike crazy distances to raise money for Free The Children and other charities close to our hearts.

For more information about our sustainability programme, visit our website: virgin-atlantic.com/changeisintheair and read our annual report. 44

We’re continuously working to reduce our impact on the environment reducing our greenhouse gas emissions with a more efficient fleet, helping drive the creation of low-carbon aviation fuels for the future, and working to reduce our noise footprint. On the ground, we’re focussing on smarter ways to manage our energy, vehicles, water and waste. And we’re also helping our designers, buyers and suppliers to create more sustainable supply chains.

Want to do your bit? Start by offsetting the carbon emissions associated with your journey. Our scheme, in partnership with award winning offset specialist The CarbonNeutral Company, is designed to help finance renewable energy and resource conservation projects all over the world that benefit both people and planet. Look in Retail Therapy to offset onboard or visit virginatlantic. com/changeisintheair and put your flight details into our carbon calculator.

We love our partnership with Free The Children. Free The Children’s mission is to create a world in which all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. It’s helping us to deliver meaningful, longterm change in some of our developing country destination communities, as well as engaging school children in the UK to get involved and ‘be the change’ they want to see in the world. You can help support their work, right from your seat. Please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope with your headset and hand it to one of our cabin crew. To keep it safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Your donation will help support international sustainable community development and inspire young people in the UK to take action on social and environmental causes. Thank you!
