Decades of dance From 1980s house to today’s club scene, Coldcut’s Matt Black and Jonathan More talk exclusively to Vera about the influence on dance music of their label, Ninja Tune
‘Jon and I got to know each other because we realised we were the only two guys crazy enough to pay 45 quid for a copy of Lesson 3 [by hip-hop producers Double Dee & Steinski] from Record Shack in Berwick Street,’ says Black with a smile, remembering the pair’s London origins. ‘It was that crate-digging thing about having the best tunes.’ They’ve had them ever since, both as hitmakers in their own right as Coldcut and as the co-founders of Ninja Tune, the fiercely independent label they formed in 1990. Resolutely under the radar of many in the dance mainstream, the company has nevertheless formed an unrivalled reputation as a true tastemaker with its faultless track record for spotting and signing some of the most

razor-sharp dance and hip-hop music in the world. Now we’re celebrating that fact with a special Ninja Tune edition of The List on Vera, based around a rare interview that Black and More granted me recently to talk about their unique history and play a selection of the label’s most seminal tracks. From Roots Manuva via the Cinematic Orchestra to Kate Tempest, it’s an illustrated guide to a shortlist of hugely significant sounds that have bubbled up from the streets in recent decades, all informed by More and Black’s own background as artists. As they tell me, that goes back to their unintentionally seminal role in helping to shape the dance revolution of the late 1980s and early ‘90s, when they burst onto an unsuspecting scene as Coldcut. Black, a computer programmer, and More, a former art teacher, seized the shared enthusiasm for disco and rap culture that they discovered in that record shop and poured it into the newly-affordable technology of the day, both in clubs as DJs and on disc.

No relationship lasts for 30 years without some exceptional spark, and that’s what the indestructible friendship of Jonathan More and Matt Black has in abundance. It’s allowed them to survive and thrive as DJs, artists and label bosses, and it all started when they were inauspiciously stooped over some vinyl bins.
Wiley
After two early singles (Hey Kids, What Time Is It? and Beats + Pieces), they broke through with the 1988 single Doctorin’ The House, featuring Yazz, the singer whose global smash The Only Way Is Up they would subsequently produce.

‘With Doctorin’ The House,’ remembers Black, ‘we already had a sequencer and a Casio sampler. This was tech that had cost you a quarter of a million quid, then in a couple of years had come down to a Casio price range, where people like us could afford it. ‘So this was the start, when very sophisticated studio tech, which had formerly been the monopoly of rich artists and labels, became a lot more democratised, and we were able to jump on that. It coincided with the DJ explosion, using turntables to make tracks out of.’ More adds that the key to their breakthrough was the duo’s hands-on experience, which has continued to inform everything they’ve done. ‘I think that was an important thing, our love of DJing and having come through the warehouse scene in London. You learned a lot about the dancefloor, about what constituted a break and what would get people excited, so that knowledge was very useful. We did approach making that record with a DJ head, as opposed to a musical head, and I think that’s what marks it out as being different.’
‘Then we did go the other way as well and got signed to Big Life, then they got bought by a bigger label, and suddenly we found ourselves working in the music business machine. We thought, in the end, it’s best just to take responsibility for failure or success yourself, and that’s why we started Ninja Tune.’
Young Fathers ‘We didn’t really know what we were doing,’ admits Black. ‘But it was an opportunity to vault over the normal path of being tape-op and making the tea for eight years, before you luckily might get a chance to sit in the engineer’s chair. ‘As Jon said, the warehouse scene was hot at that time. It was kind of a cultural revolution, really. There were a lot of different sorts of people coming together to party and dance and enjoy music together. That I think was largely responsible for the explosion in UK dance music.’
‘I think we realised at an early stage that it was best for artists to have as much control as possible,’ says Black. ‘With our early cut-up records, no record company was going to put them out, because they were illegal cut-ups, basically, and they were a bit too odd. So we realised it was best to do it ourselves.
Coldcut’s first album What’s That Noise? arrived in 1989, and they’ve continued to make records under the name ever since, although it’s 10 years since their last album, Sound Mirrors. Another, rest assured, is in the works, in between the duties they share at the helm of Ninja Tune and its satellite labels Big Dada and Counter Records. All of them are further represented in our selection of albums on board to complement The List on Vera, including work by Wiley, Fink, Young Fathers and ODESZA.
Studio tech, which had formerly been the monopoly of rich labels, became more democratised
Twenty-six years into the label, and with their personal 30th anniversary imminent, More laughs that ‘it only seems like yesterday.’ Adds Black: ‘Like in a good relationship, there’s still more to find out about each other. Neither of us will probably have a working relationship of this intensity and length, so it’s good to stick with it.’ They do that with their core principle of doing everything their own way. ‘We’re square pegs, round holes, and quite belligerent as well,’ says More. ‘No we’re not!,’ Black replies with mock belligerence. ‘We’re the bits of grit in the oyster of dance music.’ Words by Paul Sexton

movies
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip
10 Cloverfield Lane
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Thriller, 104 mins Director: Dan Trachtenberg Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.
15
Boasting a plot you don’t want to give away for fear of spoiling the fun, this ‘blood relative’ to Cloverfield is a taut three-hander revolving around a woman (Winstead) cooped up in a bunker with two men (Goodman and Gallagher Jr.). Is she being rescued? Or kidnapped? Performance, plot and direction mesh beautifully and the result is a nerve-jangling, surprise-filled thriller.
Allegiant
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 120 mins 12 Director: Robert Schwentke Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Jeff Daniels
The latest in the post-apocalyptic Divergent franchise is part one of the final book in the series. The story finds our hero Tris (Woodley) escaping beyond the wall with love-interest Four (James). However, once outside, they learn shocking new truths. Setting the scene for what promises to be a revelatory finale, Allegiant cranks the tension and boasts some awesome set-pieces of its own.
Anomalisa Romance, 90 mins Directors: Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson Voices of: Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Thewlis, Tom Noonan
15
Maverick screenwriter Kaufman and director Johnson are the brains behind this Oscar-nominated stop-motion film – the like of which you won’t have seen before. Thewlis voices troubled ‘customer services expert’ Michael Stone, who perceives everybody – including his wife and son – as the same person (Noonan). However, that soon changes when Michael meets and subsequently falls in love with Lisa (Leigh).
Barbershop: The Next Cut Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 112 min Director: Malcolm D. Lee Starring: Ice Cube, Regina Hall, Cedric The Entertainer
12
Word-of-mouth buzz says Barbershop is one of the most reliable comedy franchises around. The simple ‘life at a Chicago barbershop’ set-up is partly the secret – in this fourth instalment the team go up against local thugs – but more important is the terrific ensemble cast led by Cube and Cedric The Entertainer. And of course a sharp, very funny script.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 151 mins 12 Director: Zack Snyder Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams
You’d have thought that godon-earth Superman vs blokewith-gadgets Batman would be a bit one-sided, but it’s an issue the movie meets head-on, as a troubled Bruce Wayne (Affleck) decides Superman (Cavill) is doing more harm than good and decides to stop him. Factor in Jesse Eisenberg devouring his role as Lex Luthor and the stage is set for action on a massive scale.

Blinky Bill The Movie Kids, 90 mins U Directors: Deane Taylor, Noel Cleary Voices of: Toni Collette, Rufus Sewell, Robin McLeavy
Aussie animated comedy about Blinky Bill, a ‘legendary’ (his opinion) koala bear who is desperate to leave the small town in which he grew up. Adventurous at heart, when he discovers a clue that may lead to his long-lost father, he decides to follow and embarks on a hazardous and very funny journey – with some equally intrepid friends in tow.

The Brothers Grimsby Français, Deutsch, Español Comedy, 83 mins Director: Louis Leterrier Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Rebel Wilson
15
The man behind Borat, Bruno and Ali G unleashes his latest excursion into raunchy laughs, and it’s just as near-theknuckle as you’d expect. The plot involves Grimsby Town fan Nobby (Baron Cohen) who discovers that his adopted brother (Strong) is a top MI6 agent. Things get worse (i.e. funnier) when the hapless Nobby accidentally uncovers a plot that puts the world at risk. Oops.
Confirmation The Boss Comedy, 99 mins Director: Ben Falcone Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage
15
You know Melissa McCarthy. She broke out as the earthy, tough-talking Megan in Bridesmaids and has been playing a succession of earthy, tough-talking broads ever since. Here, in the most effective distillation of the character so far, she’s The Boss, an insanely rich (but earthy and tough-talking) businesswoman who goes to prison for insider trading. Let out, she must start a new life as a penniless civilian. But when she takes up with an ex-employee (Bell), she ends up mentoring the local Girl Scout group selling brownies – and as you might imagine, does it in her own inimitable style (‘Buy my brownies, or I’ll kill you’). McCarthy’s show all the way, this is uproarious, feel-good fare with bite. Prepare to be bossed.
8
Drama, 110 mins Director: Rick Famuyiwa Starring: Kerry Washington, Zoe Lister-Jones, Wendell Pierce
Based on a true story that gripped the US, Confirmation will keep you guessing – even if you know the outcome. The story in question revolves around Judge Clarence Thomas (Pierce), who in 1991 was nominated to the United States Supreme Court. However, the confirmation hearings were transformed into a bitter fight when attorney Anita Hill (Washington) made an allegation of sexual misconduct.
movies Demolition Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 100 mins 15 Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, Chris Cooper
Yet another astonishing performance from Gyllenhaal anchors this touching and funny probe into the far reaches of the human heart. When his wife dies, Davis’s complaining letters to a vending machine company catch the eye of an employee (Watts). They strike up a friendship and with her help Davis begins a new life. But first he must (literally) demolish his old life.
Creed
Dad’s Army
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 133 mins Director: Ryan Coogler Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson
Français, Deutsch, Español Comedy, 100 mins PG Director: Oliver Parker Starring: Toby Jones, Bil Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 96 mins Director: Sean Anders Starring: Linda Cardellini, Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg
Even such a stellar cast has big boots to fill when such an iconic sitcom is made into a film. Judge for yourself the success of Jones as Captain Mainwaring and Nighy as Sergeant Wilson as we return to 1940s Britain to find the Home Guard suffering low morale until a glamorous journalist (Zeta-Jones) arrives to report on the platoon.
Comedy starring Ferrell as the wannabe stepfather to his new wife’s children, and Wahlberg, the layabout dad who returns to win their affections. Pretty soon the two lock horns – a recipe for comedy gold.
The seventh film in the Rocky series has beaten the odds to emerge a winner, earning critical plaudits and even an Oscar nomination for Stallone’s craggy supporting turn. Once again, he plays former champ Rocky Balboa, this time serving as mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Trust us, you will punch the air.

Eye in the Sky Drama, 102 mins Director: Gavin Hood Starring: Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman
Riveting thriller with Mirren as a drone commander overseeing an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. When she discovers the bad guys are planning a suicide bombing, the order is given to eliminate them. However, just as a fighter pilot (Paul) is about to engage, a little girl wanders into the killzone, triggering an international incident and posing moral questions at the highest level.

Offered a cure for his cancer, former specialforces guy Wade (Reynolds) is under the knife before you can say, ‘experimental surgery’. Waking up, he’s cured and has regenerative powers, but he’s also disfigured. Thus is born Deadpool, a wisecracking superhero who chats to the viewer, riffs on movie tropes and kicks butt. Violent, profane and very funny, Deadpool is sensational entertainment. 9

Hail, Caesar!
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 106 mins 12 Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Josh Brolin, George Clooney
We’ve learned to expect the unexpected from the Coen brothers, so the fact that their latest is a barmy tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, complete with audacious musical numbers (Johansson’s synchronised swimming scene: say no more) should come as no surprise. As usual, the stars are out in force, but Clooney steals the show as kidnapped studio star Baird Whitlock.
How To Be Single Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 110 mins Director: Christian Ditter Starring: Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann
15
Anyone missing their fix of Sex and the City and/or Friends need look no further than this adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s book. Johnson stars as Alice, who when she finds herself on the shelf, hits the New York party scene with her sister (Mann) and pal Robin (Wilson) in tow. What follows is a sweet and funny homage to female friendship.
The Hateful Eight
Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Drama, 182 mins 18 Director: Quentin Tarantino Starring: Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh
Tarantino’s Western finds Russell’s bounty hunter escorting Jason Leigh to the hangman in Red Rock. But with their journey interrupted by a stopover at Minnie’s Haberdashery, tensions mount and trigger fingers get increasingly itchy. It’s a lengthy film but The Hateful Eight never feels it thanks to masterful direction and an ensemble cast who wring the script for every last drop of tension.
I Saw the Light High-Rise Thriller, 119 mins Director: Ben Wheatley Starring: Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons
This horror-thriller is shocking, but if you’re feeling brave then you’re in for a unique combination of talent. First, JG Ballard’s source novel, which tells the story of a grisly class war that breaks out in the titular dwelling; then there’s horror auteur Ben Wheatley’s typically unflinching direction, and lastly, of course, great turns from stars Hiddleston, and Miller.
15
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 124 mins Director: Marc Abraham Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Hiddleston, David Krumholtz
15
Who knew that man-of-the-moment Hiddleston was such a dab hand at the guitar? Answer: the same people who thought the old Etonian would be a good choice to play country legend Hank Williams. Charting Williams’ rise, and then his sudden, tragic death at just 29, this is a stirring biopic with a note-perfect Hiddleston proving his musical chops in the brilliantly rendered musical scenes. 11

In the Heart of the Sea

Joy
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 124 mins 12 Director: David O. Russell Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper
Loosely inspired by the tale of Joy Mangano, inventor of the selfsqueezing Miracle Mop, Joy finds its heroine (Lawrence) pursuing the American dream and trying to sell her invention on the QVC shopping channel. Cooper’s great as the head of QVC, and it’s gratifying to see De Niro in a role worthy of his talents, but it’s Lawrence who steals the show.
Kung Fu Panda 3
Keanu
Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 100 mins Director: Peter Atencio Starring: Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, Tiffany Haddish
15
Comedians Key and Peele may not be well known outside of the US but that’s about to change with the release of this superb, satirical comedy featuring some of the cutest kitten-in-a-gunfight scenes ever filmed. Keanu is the kitty in question, but when he’s catnapped, pals Rel and Clarence (Key and Peele) must pose as gangsta drug dealers in order to rescue him.

Now the remaining heroes must choose sides, and the stage is set for the showdown to end them all. Whose side will you be on?
Even by the sky-high standards of the Marvel Comics Universe (MCU if you want to be really geeky about it), Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is a winner: sharper, more relevant and more explosively action-packed than ever before. As for the plot, the clue is in the title. Following an incident involving The

The plot involves a kid with special powers (Jaeden Lieberher) whose father tries to rescue him from the cult who worships him. Plucky producer Patty (Roberts) stays and the cameras keep rolling, broadcasting a volatile hostage situation to the world…
Mr. Right
Français, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 92 mins Director: Paco Cabezas Starring: Anna Kendrick, Sam Rockwell, Tim Roth
Friends of eternal singleton Martha (Kendrick) are delighted for her when she starts dating ‘Mr. Right’ (Rockwell). But while perfect in every other way, Mr. Right has a serious drawback in the career prospects: he’s a hitman. Not only that, but he’s a ‘reverse hitman’ who takes out the bad guys, which has made him something of a target for other hitmen (including one played by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA). Martha should scarper, of course, but she and Mr Right are perfect together and she’s not about to let go that easily. What follows is a lot of slickly done bang-bang and banter, with both leads bringing their A-game to a winning, supremely likeable mix of action and romantic-comedy.

And if a narrative that concentrates on Pele’s early years and his relationship with his father lacks fireworks it’s more than made up for by explosive footwork.

Sing Street Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Romance, 106 mins 12 Director: John Carney Starring: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy
As its writer/director John Carney freely admits, Sing Street is wish fulfilment writ large. Set in 1980s Dublin, the story revolves around Conor (Wash-Peelo), who finds himself the target of bullies at his new school. His other problems are one, falling in love with gorgeous fellow pupil, Raphina; two, asking her to star in the video for his band, and three, the fact that he doesn’t have a band, a song, or the slightest idea how to make a video. Enter older bother, music-obsessed Brendan, to help him fulfil his dreams – to a soundtrack of Duran Duran, The Jam, The Cure, A-ha etc. In the tradition of classics The Commitments and Once, with a heart as big as its tunes are hummable, Sing Street is the feelgood film of the year, no contest.

Inhospitable locations, a painstaking director and a grizzly bear for a co-star – this acclaimed story of a trapper (DiCaprio), and his gruelling battle with the elements is as famous for its punishing production as it is for the mesmerising results.
Room Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 117 mins Director: Leonard Abrahamson Starring: Brie Larson, William H. Macy, Joan Allen

A tremendous novel is given a fitting adaptation in this acclaimed drama. Best Actress Oscar-winner Larson stars as a mum who is held prisoner with her five-year-old son, Jack, in a dirty shed they call simply ‘room’. What happens next is not only the stuff of riveting drama, but a testament to the unbreakable ties binding mother and son.

Sisters

Fey and Poehler are quite possibly the funniest women on the planet, and uniting them as siblings who throw a huge party in their soon-to-be-sold childhood home is as good an idea as it sounds, with laughs coming thick and fast.

The winner of this year’s Best Picture Oscar, Spotlight is a modern classic in the mould of All The President’s Men. Initially sceptical, they soon uncover a scandal that will reverberate far beyond Boston. 17

Little film called Star Wars. You might have heard of it. But just in case you need a nudge, this seventh instalment of the superb sci-fi series is better than anyone had a right to expect, featuring original cast members (Ford and Carrie Fisher), a memorable new baddie (Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren) and, in Finn and Rey, two heroes to root for. Welcome back, Star Wars, you have been missed.

Just as Guy Ritchie gave Sherlock Holmes a postmodern twist, this re-imagining of the Frankenstein story aims to do the same. McAvoy stars as the doctor but unusually, the story is told from the viewpoint of his assistant, Igor (Radcliffe), as the pair struggle to create a human from salvaged body parts.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Triple 9 Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Crime, 115 mins Director: John Hillcoat Starring: Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Winslet
For the United States police force, ‘triple-nine’ is the code to denote ‘officer down’. It also provides the key to this dark, must-see thriller. The plot? Crooks (including a scenery-chewing Winslet as a Russian baddie) plan a killing to distract attention from a heist elsewhere. Needless to say, things don’t go to plan, and the stage is set for a tense finale.

Just twelve men have walked on the moon – and the last one to do so, in 1972, is the subject of this astounding feature-length documentary. Now in his 80s, Gene Cernan is an engaging, fascinating subject, holding forth not only on that last epoch-making occasion that man walked on the moon (he left behind his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust) but also the other lunar missions he flew, three in all. Around him and his memories, English filmmaker Mark Craig has constructed a visually stunning piece combining rare archive material and state-of-the-art visual effects to present an iconic historical character on the big screen.
Homme Less Though Mark Reay is outwardly successful – a handsome, charismatic and well-dressed male model – he is also homeless. Director Thomas Wirthensohn decided to document his friend’s existence and what emerges is a portrait of a man leading a true double life. It’s not just the music that makes this such a classic. It’s the between-song banter, the sometimes-tense atmosphere, the sense of history surrounding the whole occasion. A peerless live album – one of the very best. 36
Currently enjoying a longoverdue renaissance, Jeff Lynne has released his first set of new music in 15 years and as with all of his output, it’s warm, melodic and gently epic – like getting together with an old friend.
‘The Goofy Goober Song’ and ‘Ripped Pants’ are just two of the highlights from this collection of undersea ditties the kids will love. Oh, and grown-ups, don’t miss P!nk performing ‘We’ve Got Scurvy’. It’s a scream.
US girl group Fifth Harmony were formed on the second series of X Factor USA, and… wait, come back! They’re actually really good, with this second album combining a Spice Girls’ pop zest with lots of soul and hooks.

It’s almost 30 years since Matt Black and Jonathan More - aka Coldcut - cemented their group’s reputation as the kings of the emerging UK dance scene. In this exclusive Coldcut-curated playlist, the duo spin the hottest tracks from their iconic Ninja Tune label and discuss their decades in dance music. Want even more classic cuts? Look out for ‘Ninja Tune Presents’ in the album listings.

In Return Ninja Tune Presents
What’s great about this soundtrack companion to the major Joplin documentary of the same name is that it includes material from her solo years and a handful of her iconic, powerful live tracks. Essential.
Seattle-based electronic duo ODESZA made a splash with their debut, Summer’s Gone, and were quick to follow it with a second album expanding on the formula of Glitterball synthpop tunes perfect for grinning along to.
Fink Perfect Darkness Ninja Tune Presents
A staple of Coldcut’s Ninja Tunes label, Fink (aka Cornish singer and DJ Fin Greenall) has been quietly releasing sneakily brilliant forays into dub, folk and trip hop since the turn of the century. Dating back to 2000, Perfect Darkness is an achingly beautiful out-and-out folk album that makes superb use of Fink’s rasping, soothing voice.

Foxes has alchemised her love of Björk, Kate Bush and Patti Smith into fascinatingly quirky pop. The empowering single Body Talk glitters amid a second album that sees her going from strength to strength.
Santana IV Rock
For the first time in 45 years (since 1971’s Santana III, in fact), the original line-up is back together. His skills undimmed by time, Carlos Santana’s mercurial, genre-defying guitar takes centre stage. In short, Santana IV is a rousing, triumphant return. Welcome back.
Richard Ashcroft These People Alternative
From his shoegazing roots with early Verve through to the smash hit ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ and his solo career, Ashcroft is quite simply a man who knows his way around a good tune. So it proves on this polished fourth solo effort.
Flume Skin Dance & Electronic
Having remixed the likes of Lorde, Sam Smith, Arcade Fire and Disclosure, 2012 marked the right time for 24-year-old Aussie producer Harley Edward Streten (aka Flume) to step up to the plate with a debut album all his own. Bypassing obvious dancefloor hooks, Skin is a beguiling mix of leftfield and downtempo electronica with a distinctly headphone-friendly bent.
Roots Manuva Run Come Save Me Ninja Tune Presents
Roots Manuva, or Rodney Smith to his birth certificate, is one of the leading UK hip-hop artists, has been releasing consistently excellent albums since 1999. This, his second from 2001, is one of the best. 37

Laura Mvula The Dreaming Room Pop
If Laura Mvula’s debut album hinted at an artist keen to push the boundaries of pop and soul, then The Dreaming Room comes good on that promise. Linking up with London Symphony Orchestra, Mvula’s minimalist electronica now has an even more symphonic edge, giving it a sense of transporting otherworldly beauty that offsets her amazing voice.
Equal Beethoven Classical
With his expressive playing, young Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren ranks among the most promising talents of his generation. Here he presents a combination of Beethoven’s only violin concerto and Schumann.

My Favourites Bollywood
My Favourites Bollywood
Known for experimenting with her style and image, Sunidhi Chauhan is something of an inspiration to other singers in her native India and was chosen as a coach on India’s The Voice. Here she picks her personal favourite songs.
Sonu Nigam is one of India’s bestknown and widely recognised playback singers, meaning he’s graced dozens of top Bollywood movies. So when Sonu chooses his favourites of his own songs, you can bet they’re good ones.
A support slot with Black Sabbath had Ozzy Osbourne raving about Rival Sons, making this follow-up to Great Western Valkyrie one of the most anticipated rock albums of recent years. Based in California, theirs is a loose, sunny take on hard rock reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, complete with Jay Buchanan’s soulful vocals and fuzz-drenched guitar.
Tom Odell
Beyoncé
Dolly Parton
Wrong Crowd Alternative
Lemonade Pop
Blue Smoke & The Best Of Country
After snaffling the 2013 Brits Critics’ Choice Award, Odell released an acclaimed debut, Long Way Down. Three years later this follow up showcases not just his formidable songwriting skills but also his unique voice.
If the Queen B’s spark has been (ever so slightly) dimmed by recent private-life problems, the good news is that she’s used this latest album as an opportunity to bare her soul – something she’s rarely done before.
There is a school of thought that says Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ is simply the most perfect song ever written. However, as this compilation goes to prove, it has some serious competition from within her very own catalogue.

sustainability
Here’s just three of the things we’re doing to help you have a lower carbon flight:
As an airline, we don’t shy away from the fact that our business has an environmental impact. We think it’s imperative to do everything we can to reduce our carbon emissions and ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible. Change is in the Air is the name we give to our sustainability programme, because we believe that sustainability means changing things for the better. Fuel and carbon efficiency of our aircraft accounts for 99% of our direct carbon footprint, and is therefore our number one environmental priority.
1
Buying more efficient aircraft In the last few years, we’ve been investing in upgrading our fleet; replacing older, less efficient aircraft with newer, more efficient ones. In 2013 we brought 10 A330 aircraft into service. And from 2014 we’ve been introducing 13 B787s into our fleet, with at least another four to go. Both these new aircraft are an impressive 30% more efficient per trip than the ones they’re replacing.
Supporting a global carbon deal for aviation We were an early mover in calling for the global aviation industry to work together to address the climate change challenge. So we were pleased when, in 2009, our industry organisation (the International Air Transport Association) agreed carbon targets among its members. World attention is now focused on securing an agreement for ‘carbon neutral growth’ that all airlines can take part in. Naturally we support that.
2
3 Flying more efficiently
We recently partnered with leading academics to conduct a study to provide our Captains with standard fuel and carbon efficiency information in a more timely and useful way. This innovative, evidence-based approach resulted in savings of 21,500 tonnes of carbon (and a welcome £3.3 million in fuel costs), in just eight months. We’re excited to explore how we can build on these fantastic savings in the coming months.
You can help too
Carbon isn’t the only thing we do
Offset the carbon associated with your flight through our gold standard carbon offsetting scheme. Funds raised help finance renewable energy and resource conservation projects all over the world. Check out Retail Therapy magazine or speak to a member of our cabin crew for more information.
Through our Sustainable Design and Buying programme, we’re working with our teams and suppliers to improve the social and environmental standards of the products and services we source. And we’re so proud of our much loved, long-term charity partnership with Free The Children. We’re working together to invest in young people in the UK and around the world. If you’d like to support their work, remember to pop your loose change in the purple ‘Change for Children’ envelope and hand it to a member of crew before you leave.
