Our selection of pilots and first episodes will whet your appetite for a full-series binge after your flight

It became addictive, being able to watch one episode after another, going for a cheeky half-hour more when you know you should really be going to bed, or at least watching Newsnight.

No, Smorgasbord isn’t the title of the latest Scandinavian noir to grab viewers in its icy grip. But it is the brand new service on our entertainment system, Vera.

It takes a few days to recover and to prepare to transfer your affections to a new series. These withdrawal symptoms can be daunting.

Like the buffet table it is named after, Smorgasbord is designed to give you a taster of things to come as we spread our entertainment delights before you.

But now, with Smorgasbord, you can sample a first episode of a show you’ve heard about, flirted with, fancied, but dared not actually ask out on a date. So if you like it, you can go off and download it or buy the box set as soon as you land.

The way we consume television shows has changed completely in recent years. It’s one of the great cultural shifts in behaviour. First came the box-set binge, which enabled us to catch up on whole series and dedicate entire weekends to watching them. It’s how I caught The Sopranos, Californication and Entourage.

You could cast off with Black Sails, a rip-roaring pirate adventure that bills itself as a sort of prequel to Treasure Island, with former British naval officer Jim Flint (Toby Stephens) turned renegade pirate and seeking sunken treasure in the Caribbean — well, what else do you want a pirate to do? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of rum, wenches and swash buckling, too.

But that rush of binge watching is still a heady experience and, inevitably, there’s also that terrible low, when the final episode is over and, like an addict, you frantically check there isn’t another one lurking somewhere.

Bates Motel Check out by checking in, with Bates Motel, the prequel to Hitchcock’s classic Psycho. Teenage Norman Bates is played by British former child actor Freddie Highmore, and his fiercely over-protective mother Norma is Vera Farmiga. Here, you’ll find out why they’ve bought a motel, why Norman finds it hard to make friends and wonder what happens during Norman’s black out spells…

I admit I got hooked on Empire, right from this pilot episode — a real guilty pleasure of a series, like a black Dynasty meets King Lear, with hip hop. It’s set amid warring record labels. Terrence Howard stars as the former drug dealer turned music mogul, trying to set his sons up to inherit the family business. Meanwhile, there’s a great turn from Taraji P. Henson as ex-wife Cookie, now returned to get the label back on its feet. It’s sexy, wild, silly, bling and funny, but always cool.

The TV sm The Affair

Flesh and Bone Ray Donovan

2

Raising the barre, Flesh and Bone goes behind the scenes of a ballet company. This drama has more leg-warmers and Lycra than you can shake a tutu at, with all the Black Swan meets Fame intrigue you want, as the prima ballerina (Irina Dvorovenko) feels under threat from a temperamental newcomer (the impressive Sarah Hay). I hardly need tell you about Game of Thrones Season 6, but if you’ve never tried it, maybe this is a good place to start, with one of the most hyped and anticipated new episodes in TV history. Or maybe you won’t be able to make head or dragon’s tail of it, amid all the corpses, crones, revenge, Sand Snakes, Dothraki and people named after Ikea furniture. Perfect for a smorgasbord, though.

Time travel is the twist in Outlander. When Claire, a World War II nurse (Catriona Bale) visiting Inverness, touches a magical stone, she finds herself transported back to 1743 and the middle of the Jacobite rebellion.

Jane the Virgin Jane the Virgin might just be the strangest show of the lot, taking its lead from Latin America’s hugely popular telenovelas, the soap-style series that combine glamour and humour with high melodrama. Gina Rodriguez is the break-out star of this Miami-set show, playing Jane who somehow becomes inseminated with a baby by mistake. This pilot episode sets the tone as clearly as anyone possibly can, complete with Latin Lover Narrator voice over.

Sounds far-fetched yet romantic - funny, but a similar thing happened to me last time I was in Edinburgh, but I think it was something to do with the whisky… Liev Schreiber is the star of Ray Donovan, a series with a whiff of old-school LA noir about it, but set in the present day. Schreiber wholly convinces as a former Boston thug now working as ‘fixer’ for a shady yet respectable LA law firm, arranging bribes and smoothing over the rough patches. He could have been played by Bogart years ago. There’s great work, too, from Jon Voight as Donovan’s fresh-out-ofjail Dad and Eddie Marsan as his older brother.

orgasbord Outlander

This is a series I missed and have longed to get with - big fan of all concerned. So I’m going right in. The Affair is something my wife watched. (Should I be worried?) She liked it a lot but I was hooked on something else at the time. Dominic West and the awardwinning Ruth Wilson play Noah and Alison — he’s a teacher but really wants to write another novel; she’s grieving the death of a child. When they meet in the resort of Montauk, Long Island, sparks fly and the series examines the emotional fall-out of that attraction from multiple perspectives. It looks fraught, immaculately shot and brilliantly performed every time I walked in on my wife. Once, I even saw her cry. So, go on, have a taste of our Smorgasbord. If you don’t like one viewing dish, there’s always another flavour right next to it. And don’t worry — if you do clear your plate this time, we’ll be refreshing the smorgasbord regularly with even more morsels to try and tempt. Smaklig måltid, as they say… Words by Jason Solomons

10 Cloverfield Lane

15

It’s an unusual sequel that shares a name with its parent film but is otherwise unrelated. Then again, you don’t expect cookie-cutter filmmaking from J.J. Abrams, the man who gave us the original Cloverfield. Claiming a producer credit on this one, Abrams reckons it’s a ‘blood relative’, but to be honest you’d be advised to enjoy it solely on its own merits. Boasting a plot you don’t want to reveal for fear of spoiling the fun, it’s a taut three-hander revolving around a woman (Winstead) cooped up in an underground bunker with two men (Goodman and Gallagher Jr.). Is she being rescued or kidnapped? Performance, plot and direction mesh beautifully and the result is a nerve-jangling thriller.

“Goodman is a brilliant character actor who has been on a hot streak of late.” Variety on 10 Cloverfield Lane

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip Kids, 92 mins Director: Walt Becker Starring: Jason Lee, Jesica Ahlberg, Josh Green

U

The chart-topping chipmunk chums return. Dave intends to propose to his girlfriend, who has an obnoxious son, Miles. Fearing this could spell the end of the band, they decide the union must be stopped. Trouble is, they have three days to do it.

Black Mass 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 144 mins Director: Michael Bay Starring: John Krasinski, Pablo Schreiber, Toby Stephens

Whether this real-life account of military derring-do takes liberties with the truth remains a debate for another day. What’s certain is that in the hands of director Bay, not to mention a committed cast, its depiction of a security team fighting wave after wave of terrorist attacks at a diplomatic compound in Libya in 2012 makes for a nail-shredding, action-packed experience.

15

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 123 mins 15 Director: Scott Cooper Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch

A thunderously good performance from Depp helps propel this true-life gangster movie straight into the pantheon of the greats. He plays James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, who - while his brother Bill (Cumberbatch) makes the best of a political career - pursues a life of crime, evading capture to become one of the most dangerous hoodlums in US history. 7

movies

Anomalisa Romance, 90 mins 15 Director: Charlie Kaufman, Duke Johnson Voices of: Jennifer Jason Leigh, David Thewlis, Tom Noonan

Maverick screenwriter Kaufman and director Johnson are the brains behind this Oscarnominated stop-motion film – the like of which you won’t have seen before. Thewlis voices troubled ‘customer service expert’ Michael Stone, who perceives everybody – including his wife and son – as the same person (Noonan). However, that soon changes when Michael meets and falls in love with Lisa (Leigh). Being the only person he sees as individual, Michael thinks of Lisa as an anomaly, hence ‘Anomalisa’, and is determined not to let her go – at any cost. As you might imagine, it’s a determinedly off-kilter movie. However, Kaufman specialises in wringing leftfield concepts for their innate humanity, and ultimately this is a remarkably warm and universal experience.

“ This animation is predictably strange but unexpectedy profound.” The Telegraph on Anomalisa

Creed

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 133 mins Director: Ryan Coogler Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson

12

The seventh film in the Rocky series has beaten the odds to emerge a winner, earning critical plaudits and even an Oscar nomination for Stallone’s craggy supporting turn. Once again, he plays former champ Rocky Balboa, this time serving as mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Trust us, you will punch the air.

Confirmation !

Drama, 110 mins Director: Rick Famuyiwa Starring: Kerry Washington, Zoe Lister-Jones, Wendell Pierce

Based on a true story that gripped the US, Confirmation will keep you guessing – even if you know the outcome. The story in question revolves around Judge Clarence Thomas (Pierce), who in 1991 was nominated to the United States Supreme Court. However, the confirmation hearings were transformed into a bitter fight when attorney Anita Hill (Washington) made an allegation of sexual misconduct.

Concussion

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 123 mins Director: Peter Landesman Starring: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks

Whistleblowing biopic starring Smith as real-life forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. When he diagnoses a pro football player with a football-related brain trauma, he must fight the powers that be for the truth to be known. 8

Dad’s Army 12

Comedy, 100 mins Director: Oliver Parker Starring: Toby Jones, Bil Nighy, Catherine Zeta-Jones

PG

Even such a stellar cast has big boots to fill when such an iconic sitcom is made into a film. Judge for yourself the success of Jones as Captain Mainwaring and Nighy as Sergeant Wilson as we return to 1940s Britain to find the Home Guard suffering low morale. That’s until a glamorous journalist (Zeta-Jones) arrives to report on the platoon’s exploits.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 96 mins Director: Sean Anders Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini

movies

Daddy’s Home

12

Comedy starring Ferrell as the wannabe stepfather to his new wife’s children, and Wahlberg, the layabout dad who returns to win their affections. Pretty soon the two lock horns – a recipe for comedy gold.

The Finest Hours

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 118 mins Director: Craig Gillespie Starring: Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Casey Affleck

Deadpool

12

Based on the true story of the most daring rescue in US coastguard history, The Finest Hours flits between two sets of seafarers in 1952 Massachusetts: the guys in a crippled oil tanker headed by Affleck, and Pine’s coastguards who set out to help them. It’s a spectacularly rendered tale of men in flimsy boats versus Mother Nature at her most ferocious. Playing in 3D Audio.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 108 mins Director: Tim Miller Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein

15

Offered a cure for his cancer, former special-forces guy Wade (Reynolds) is under the knife before you can say, ‘experimental surgery’. Waking up, he’s cured and has regenerative powers, but he’s also disfigured. Thus is born Deadpool, a wisecracking superhero who chats to the viewer, riffs on movie tropes and kicks butt. Violent, profane and very funny, this is sensational entertainment.

How To Be Single Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 110 mins Director: Christian Ditter Starring: Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann

15

For those missing their fix of Sex And The City and/ or Friends – or, frankly, anyone who fancies an undemanding but sneakily intelligent rom-com – we give you How To Be Single. A brilliant cast is headed by Johnson as Alice, who after splitting up with Josh goes in search of ‘the one’ in the Big Apple, along with her sister (Mann) and wild friend (Wilson) in tow. No, there isn’t much of a plot. But who cares? You can watch Game of Thrones if you want that. The strength of How To Be Single lies in the undeniable wit and verve of its execution, and the fact that it’s ultimately a moving homage to the strength of female friendship. 9

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 106 mins 12 Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Josh Brolin, George Clooney

movies

Hail, Caesar!

We’ve learned to expect the unexpected from the Coen brothers, so the fact that their latest is a barmy tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, complete with audacious musical numbers (Johansson’s synchronised swimming scene: say no more) should come as no surprise. As usual, the stars are out in force, but Clooney steals the show as kidnapped studio star Baird Whitlock.

“The Coen brothers go to Hollywood — and it’s a pleasure to watch.” The Independent on Hail, Caesar!

The Hateful Eight

Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Drama, 168 mins 18 Director: Quentin Tarantino Starring: Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Tarantino’s Western finds Russell’s bounty hunter escorting Jason Leigh to the hangman in Red Rock. But with their journey interrupted by a stopover at Minnie’s Haberdashery, tensions mount and trigger fingers get increasingly itchy. It’s a lengthy film but The Hateful Eight never feels it thanks to masterful direction and an ensemble cast who wring the script for every last drop of tension.

In the Heart of the Sea

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 122 mins 12 Director: Ron Howard Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson

Based on the same true story that inspired Moby-Dick, this epic from director Howard finds the crew of the crippled Essex surviving the whale’s attack only to be faced by an even greater challenge – the sea itself. 11

movies

The Intern

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 121 mins Director: Nancy Meyers Starring: Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo

The Lady in the Van

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 104 mins 12 Director: Nicholas Hytner Starring: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Jim Broadbent

12

One to make you go ‘Aw…’, The Intern is a heart-warming comedy about 70-year-old widower Ben (De Niro), so bored by retirement that he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). Quickly the two learn important life lessons.

Smith is wonderful as Mary Shepherd, who in real-life lived in a van on the driveway of writer Alan Bennett’s house for 15 years. Having befriended her, Bennett digs and discovers the moving truth about this strange old lady.

The Martian Sci-Fi, 141 mins 12 Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Joy

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 106 mins Director: David O. Russell Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper

Kung Fu Panda 3 12

Loosely inspired by the tale of Joy Mangano, inventor of the self-squeezing Miracle Mop, Joy finds its protagonist (Lawrence) pursuing the American dream and trying to sell her invention on the QVC shopping channel. Cooper’s great as the head of QVC, and it’s gratifying to see De Niro in a role worthy of his talents, but it’s Lawrence who steals the show.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Family, 85 mins Director: Jennifer Yuh Nelson Voices of: Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman

PG

Jack Black’s cuddly Po is back and he’s not alone. Reunited with his long-lost father he also finds that he’s related to a bunch of cute panda cousins. Cue: aww. Trouble is, the evil Kai is on the warpath, and to defeat him, Po must train his brethren to become a new generation of Kung Fu Pandas.

From director Scott and starring Damon in one of his most rewarding roles, The Martian is an enthralling and – literally – cosmic experience. Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, presumed dead after a fierce storm and left on Mars by his crew. He must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and find a way to tell Earth that he is alive.

Midnight Special Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Sci-Fi, 112 mins Director: Jeff Nichols Starring: Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Michael Shannon

12

Critics say Midnight Special is a cult classic in the making, and who are we to disagree? But here’s a tip for when you’re watching it (which you definitely should, because it’s ace): don’t ponder the plot too much, just sit back and enjoy the ride. The story involves a boy with special powers (Jaeden Lieberher) whose father tries to rescue him from the cult that worships him. At the same time, the US government is taking an interest, and as anybody who’s seen E.T., Firestarter, Starman etc. knows, that’s always a bad thing. What ensues is a thrilling chase movie that evokes classic Spielbergian sci-fi blockbusters as well as throwing up some truly epic set pieces.

12

movies Norm of the North

Français, Español Family, 91 mins Director: Trevor Wall Voices of: Rob Schneider, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong

U

Family animated adventure about a garrulous polar bear who takes action against Arctic property developers. With a team of frankly hilarious lemmings in tow, he heads for New York to tackle the problem at its root.

Our Brand Is Crisis

日本語, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 107 mins Director: David Gordon Green Starring: Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie

15

Based on a true story (honest), this political dirty-tricks comedy stars Bullock as ‘Calamity’ Jane, a campaigner who’s tempted out of retirement to help revive the career of a Bolivian president. However, her real reason for taking the job is the chance to lock horns with her old rival Pat Candy (Thornton) – and both will stop at nothing to win.

Pan

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 111 mins Director: Joe Wright Starring: Levi Miller, Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund

The Other Side of the Door Horror, 97 mins Director: Joannes Roberts Starring: Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sisto, Javier Botet

15

When a grief-stricken mum (Callies) attempts suicide her housekeeper tells of a ritual allowing her to say a final farewell to her dead son. She readily agrees and goes through with it, achieving closure. What she doesn’t reveal, however, is that she broke a rule of the ritual, and in doing so has unleashed a terrifying supernatural force…

PG

This exciting prequel to the beloved story stars Miller as Peter, who is whisked away to the fantastical world of Neverland. Pretty soon he’s joining forces with James Hook (Hedlund) and Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) to save Neverland from the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Jackman). With director Joe ‘Atonement’ Wright in charge this has got the looks to match its thrills.

The Peanuts Movie Family, 88 mins Director: Steve Martino Voices of: Noah Schnapp, Bill Melendez, Hadley Belle Miller

U

Poor old Charlie Brown. Once again he’s down in the dumps. The reason? Girl trouble, of course. Meanwhile, Snoopy has similar troubles as he embarks on an epic adventure in a fantasy world, pursuing the Red Baron and trying to win the heart of a beautiful poodle named Fifi.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 108 mins Director: Burr Steers Starring: Lily James, Lena Headey, Douglas Booth

15

It is a truth universally acknowledged that if you mix the undead with Jane Austen and add a dash of Downton Abbey’s Lily James, you’ll end up with a surprisingly successful mash-up of good, old-fashioned period drama and gory zombie movie. Frankly, it shouldn’t work, but you’ll have a lot of fun discovering that it does. 13

Point Break

12

This remake finds cop Johnny Utah (Bracey), brushing up on his surfing in order to mix it up with Bodhi (Ramirez) and his gang of extreme-sports-loving bank robbers. As is the current vogue, all the stunts were done for real.

Room

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 117 mins Director: Leonard Abrahamson Starring: Brie Larson, William H. Macy, Joan Allen

Race 15

A mum (Larson) and her five-year old son, Jack, are held prisoner in a dirty shed they call simply ‘room’. They’ve been there for years – it’s the only life Jack knows – and to make the situation bearable mum tells Jack that only ‘room’ and their captor, Old Nick, are real. Everything else is just TV. If all this sounds hard to watch, well… it is. But stick with it: as well as being a riveting thriller, Room is also a heartrending illustration of the unbreakable ties binding mother and son. Factor in not just Larson’s Oscar-winning turn, but also a miraculous performance from Jacob Tremblay as Jack and you can see why Room has been hailed as a masterpiece.

Français, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 134 mins Director: Stephen Hopkins Starring: Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons

PG

Athlete Jesse Owens earned his place in history when he snaffled three world records at the 1935 Big Ten track meet. However, as this biopic depicts, the following year was to be even more dramatic, with Owens (James) representing America at the Berlin Olympics.

The Revenant Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Drama, 152 mins 15 Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter

Inhospitable locations, a painstaking director and a grizzly bear for a co-star – this acclaimed story of a trapper (DiCaprio), and his gruelling battle with the elements is as famous for its punishing production as it is for the mesmerising results. 15

movies

Secret in Their Eyes Français, Español Drama, 111 mins Director: Billy Ray Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts

15

This remake of an Oscar-winning Argentine hit stars Roberts as an investigator whose daughter is found brutally murdered. As she makes plans to move away from the city and its painful memories, her colleagues (Kidman and Ejiofor) doggedly hunt the killer – both of them growing increasingly driven by the need to avenge their friend...

Spectre Warning: Contains scenes unsuitable for nervous flyers. Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 148 mins Director: Sam Mendes Starring: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux

12

Considered a series high, the last Bond outing, Skyfall, was always going to be a difficult act to follow. Undaunted, Spectre delivers the goods in style, with personal revelations aplenty as Bond (Craig) goes on the trail of the titular crime syndicate. Factor in helpings of humour and staggering action sequences and this instalment is a worthy successor. Playing in 3D Audio.

Sisters

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 118 mins Director: Jason Moore Starring: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph

15

Fey and Poehler are quite possibly the funniest women on the planet, and uniting them as siblings who throw a huge party in their soon-to-be-sold childhood home is as good an idea as it sounds, with laughs coming thick and fast.

Spotlight Drama, 127 mins 15 Director: Tom McCarthy Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams

Sicario Français, Deutsch, Español Action, 122 mins 15 Director: Denis Villeneuve Starring: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro

In Mexico, ‘sicario’ means hitman, but the question posed by this hard-hitting story of the war against drugs is: Who is the real hitman? In a searing, careerbest performance from Blunt as FBI agent Kate Macer, she is the type who plays it by the book but has her loyalties and ethics tested when she comes up against the ruthless Mexican drug cartels. Terrifying, gripping and eye-opening in equal measure, it all adds up to one of the year’s best thrillers. 16

The winner of this year’s Best Picture Oscar, Spotlight is a modern classic in the mould of All The President’s Men. A stellar ensemble cast play the Boston Globe’s investigative team, who in 2003 researched claims that the Catholic Church hid details of child abuse perpetrated by its priests. Initially sceptical, they soon uncover a scandal that will reverberate far beyond Boston.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Sci-Fi, 135 mins Director: J.J. Abrams Starring: Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega

12

Little film called Star Wars. You might have heard of it. But just in case you need a nudge, this seventh instalment of the superb sci-fi series is better than anyone had a right to expect, featuring original cast members (Ford and Carrie Fisher), a memorable new baddie (Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren) and, in Finn and Rey, two heroes to root for. Welcome back, Star Wars, you have been missed.

movies

Triple 9

For the US police force, triple 9 is the code to denote ‘officer down’. It also provides the key to this dark, must-see thriller. The plot? Crooks (including a scenerychewing Winslet as a Russian baddie) plan a killing to distract attention from a heist elsewhere. Needless to say, things don’t go to plan, and the stage is set for a nerve-shredding finale.

“It is Kate Winslet’s Russian Israeli mob moll who stands out, a big-haired ballbreaker.” Empire on Triple 9

Victor Frankenstein Adventure, 110 mins Director: Paul McGuigan Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Jessica Brown Findlay

12

Just as Guy Ritchie gave Sherlock Holmes a postmodern twist, this re-imagining of the Frankenstein story aims to do the same. McAvoy stars as the doctor but unusually, the story is told from the viewpoint of his assistant, Igor (Radcliffe), as the pair struggle to create a human from salvaged body parts.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

From avant-garde singer-songwriter Laurie Anderson comes this cinematic essay, weaving anecdotal footage with visual flights of fancy, poetic narrative and of course, superb music. The subject matter? Death. Specifically that of her beloved rat terrier Lolabelle and, by extension, her husband Lou Reed, who died in 2013. Themes include loss, memory and motherhood, and she pays tribute to her own mother, also deceased. It’s a strange celebration of the bond between human and canines.

In this Vera special hosted by Gideon Coe, the Portlandbased country/folk/rock experimentalists discuss some of their all-time favourite songs. Blitzen Trapper frontman Eric Earley and band members play two exclusive tunes and choose their career-shaping tracks by artists including Iggy and The Stooges, Big Star, Nirvana and Frank Zappa.

Like their hero Neil Young, Blitzen Trapper flirt with country, folk and rock; and like Young, their sound is a bruised and soulful synthesis of the three. This raw eighth album may well be their best yet.

The film may have earned a pasting from critics, but Batman Vs Superman delivers on the soundtrack front, with Junkie XL (fresh from their superb Mad Max: Fury Road score) adding new vim to Zimmer’s signature brooding, stentorian style.

The influence of dubstep has energised drum & bass to such an extent that the best of the genre combines elements of the two. So it is with Londoners Delta Heavy, whose debut distils low-end goodness into a summery, bass-heavy brew. Yum.

The debut from ex-One Directioner Malik is an edgier beast than anything his former band conjured. Boasting tons of late-night sophistication, there’s even a bit of – gasp – bad language among the steamy R&B jams. Naughty Zayn.

Round of applause, please, for Tax The Heat who took a look at rock ’n’ roll and decided it wasn’t broke so why try to fix it. Their debut on Nuclear Blast records is straightahead, heads-down rawk, and all the better for it.

Sommeliers in the sky All wines on board this flight have been carefully selected with Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain’s original wine and spirits merchant. Suppliers to the Royal Family since the reign of King George III, they have been trading from their historic shop, at No.3 St James’s Street, London, since 1698. We work with Berry Bros. & Rudd, who boast eight Masters of Wine and three centuries of expertise, to keep the wine racks on board stocked with excellent bottles. If you want to find out more about the ever-changing range of wines in our Upper Class cabin you will find a series of short films that talk about them in a bit more detail on your inflight entertainment system helping you to choose the perfect drop to accompany your in-flight meal.

Customer Feedback

Share your experiences As your feedback truly helps Virgin Atlantic improve its service, you may have received a survey via SMS or email. You can complete it in a few spare minutes either on your PC, tablet or smartphone. And if you get interrupted, you can always go back later and continue where you left off. You might get surveys during your trip or about a week afterwards, so if you’ve completed one already, we’re really grateful! Please let us know your thoughts simply by clicking on the link in the invitation we sent you.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is more likely to strike if you are immobile so long-haul flyers should take precaution. Drink lots of fluid and avoid excess alcohol. Keep your circulation going by wiggling your toes and ankles, or taking a walk up and down the aisle if possible. Check out our health video for further tips.

Guilt-free chocolate Eco-delicious chocolate pioneers Original Beans make chocolates as charismatic as the environmentally-threatened places they protect. More than 20,000 indigenous cacao farmers working with some of the finest and rarest cacao in the world, now have sustainable livelihoods, because for every 70g bar sold, one tree is planted. As part of our Change is in the Air! strategy, Original Beans and Virgin Atlantic are working together to record the environmental and social impact of our ‘Chocolate Footprint’. You’ll find Original Beans chocolate in Upper Class. shop.originalbeans.com 41

sustainability

Change is in the Air! is the name we give to our sustainability programme, because we believe that sustainability means changing things for the better. On environment, we focus our efforts on areas that have the biggest effect on our carbon footprint, such as reducing our aircraft emissions through more efficient, quieter aircraft, innovating on new fuels and reducing our waste. Through our Sustainable Design and Buying programme, we’re also working with our designers, buyers and suppliers to improve the social and environmental standards of the products and services we source. On community investment, we’re proud of our much loved, long term charity partnership with Free The Children. We’re working together to invest in young people in the UK and around the world.

Feel good food When you think about it, we do a lot more than just fly planes. As well as purchasing everything from jet fuel to envelopes, we serve more than 12 million meals every year onboard. We’re committed to offering our customers the finest food and drink experience possible and this includes ensuring it is sourced sustainably. So, in an airline first, we’ve partnered with the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) who have done a fantastic job helping us to work with our caterers on three key sustainability ‘pillars’: people, product and planet. In particular, we’ve been asking our suppliers to meet a number of challenging criteria, such as achieving internationally-recognised fair working conditions for farmers; sourcing

Change the world at 35,000 feet

fair trade products. That’s sustainablycertified fish and seafood, and meat, dairy and eggs with higher animal welfare standards; and the replacement of palm and soy with sustainably-certified options, or removing them altogether. In addition, our caterers can earn a 1-, 2- or 3-star rating from the SRA after comprehensive assessment of their overall sourcing, society and environmental performance. Think the Michelin Stars of sustainable food! Our biggest caterer by far, Gate Gourmet UK, is fully compliant with our standards and has recently been awarded a 2-star SRA rating. The rest are not far behind and we anticipate that the majority of inflight catering will soon fully meet our standards.

Support Free The Children’s fantastic work

Free The Children’s mission is to create a world in which all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. They’re helping us deliver sustainable change in overseas communities, as well as inspiring young people in the UK to ‘be the change’ they want to see in the world, through an empowering schools’ programme. To support their work, please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope and hand it to one of our cabin crew. To keep it safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Thank you!

As a result of our work in sustainabilty, we’re thrilled to have been one of three finalists for the Sustainable Innovation Award at the SRA Food Made Good awards in March 2016. These awards celebrate businesses that have championed sustainability through their practices and food products. Our nomination recognised our industry leading programme to transform airline catering and significantly increase the provision of sustainable dining in the air.

Carbon-offset your journey and support communities around the world

Our scheme, in partnership with awardwinning offset specialist The CarbonNeutral Company, is designed to help finance renewable energy and resource conservation projects which support communities all over the world. Check out Retail Therapy magazine or speak to a member of our cabin crew for more information to off-set the carbon from your journey. You can also visit virginatlantic.com/changeisintheair and put your flight details into our carbon calculator.
