There may be more celebrated music cities in America, but few of them renew themselves from one generation to the next like Portland, Oregon. As our brandnew edition of The List exclusively on Vera confirms, its proud place at the cutting edge is as sharp as ever in the hands of native sons Blitzen Trapper. The formidable five-piece, adept in both incisive pop-rock melody and alt-country experimentation, have been together for eight albums and twice as many years. Their newest album, All Across This Land, also playing on board, elicited eight-out-of-10 reviews, combining classic and southern rock influences to perhaps their best ever effect.

Portland’s finest From Blitzen Trapper to the Dandy Warhols, explore the music scene of Oregon’s first city

Paste magazine described it as ‘an album 15 years in the making, as the musicians are both in command of their talents individually and completely dialled in as a band’. Reviewer Eric Swedlund was moved to describe Blitzen Trapper frontman, vocalist and songwriter Eric Earley as ‘a Tom Petty of the Northwest’. Classic Rock called it a ‘slick and timeless collection of songs’.‘These songs were all written in a three-to-four month period,’ says Earley. ‘I’m always writing until I hit a vein of stuff that comes together. I wanted [this one] to have a more rock ‘n’ roll feel to it, more like five guys playing live.’ Whether you’re up to speed with the Blitzen beat or new to its charms, a trip to the Vera special, hosted by Gideon Coe, is enthusiastically prescribed. It features band members Earley, Erik Menteer and Marty Marquis playing two exclusive acoustic tunes and choosing a bunch of their favourite tracks, by the likes of Iggy and the Stooges, Big Star, Nirvana and Frank Zappa. Before you head there, let’s consider Blitzen Trapper’s standing in the firmament of Portland music history. The members jokingly play down the modern-day attractions of the city, for fear of spoiling it. ‘It’s terrible and I don’t think anybody should really move there,’ they say in the show. ‘If anything, we could stand to lose some of our Portland citizens. Move to London, it’s great.’ 2

Blitzen Trapper

Blitzen Trapper were founded from the progressive and psychedelic meanderings of a band called Garmonbozia. ‘We all moved [to Portland] in the late ‘90s,’ says Earley, ‘and started the band up in 2000. At that time, it was a fantastic place to be in a band, because rent was so cheap that you didn’t have to work...we didn’t know how good we had it, and now it’s all gone.’ That last comment was with tongue at least slightly in cheek. Portland’s place in the Pacific Northwest’s musical history extends way beyond rock’s boundaries into folk, pop and jazz. It embraces everything from the seminal garage growl of the Kingsmen, of Louie Louie fame, to the achingly trenchant songcraft of Elliott Smith. In the 1960s, Portland’s local competition to wrest some power back to the American side in the face of Beatlemania, was between the Kingsmen and fellow up-and-comers Paul Revere and the Raiders, who’d formed in Boise, Idaho. Both bands recorded Richard Berry’s 1950s composition Louie Louie in the same Portland studio in April of 1963. Decades of back-and-forth about who came first have awarded that distinction to the Kingsmen, and their version of perhaps the quintessential garage rock hit became the classic, reaching No. 2 in the US. Revere and his Raiders had the considerable consolation of countless other hits and three gold albums. As the city’s sound evolved,

Portland artists continued to figure on the international scene. Pop-rock band Quarterflash scored major early ‘80s success around their signature hit Harden My Heart, and R&B-club outfit Nu Shooz were all over our radios and dancefloors in 1986 with I Can’t Wait. When grunge took hold, its epicentre was soon recognised to be just 170 miles up the Pacific coast from Portland in Seattle, Washington. In their youth, the future members of Blitzen Trapper were listening, as proved by their selection of Nirvana’s About A Girl for their List selection. ‘We all grew up in the Pacific Northwest,’ says Earley, ‘so all these bands that were later characterised as grunge were on our radar when we were young teens.’ But the local scene has always had its sensitive, singersongwriter side too, never more evocatively represented than by the much-missed Elliott Smith, who was born in Nebraska and raised in Texas, but moved to Portland at age 14. Smith’s heartbreaking narratives were first heard on 1994’s Roman Candle, before his all-too-brief period in full beam with the XO and Figure 8 albums. One can only guess what he might be creating now, had he not taken his own life aged just 34, in 2003.

as Everclear, who scored three platinum albums in a row in the second half of the ‘90s. Then there were The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, whose inter-relationship was explored in the award-winning 2004 documentary Dig! That film is also showing on board, as is Portlandia, the popular, Peabody Award-winning sketch series that’s been on our screens for six series since 2011.

Portland is also home to postmodern folk-blues troubadour M. Ward, whose formidable body of work includes albums as one half of pop duo She & Him, with celebrated singeractress Zooey Deschanel. The city has also fostered the noted contemporary Christian band Kutless and Esperanza Spalding, whose adventurous work helped her become the first-ever jazz musician to win the Best New Artist Grammy in 2011.

The latter-day panorama of Portland music also includes such graduates as the Decemberists, the alt-rock assembly who rose to top the Billboard

And so the largest city in Oregon pursues its endless artistic regeneration, with Blitzen Trapper among its worthy ambassadors. Check them out on tour or via their admirable album catalogue, but first, bring on The List.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 144 mins 15 Director: Michael Bay Starring: John Krasinski, Pablo Schreiber, Toby Stephens

Whether this real-life account of military derring-do takes liberties with the truth remains a debate for another day. What’s certain is that in the hands of director Bay, not to mention a committed cast, its depiction of a security team fighting wave after wave of terrorist attacks at a diplomatic compound in Libya in 2012 makes for a nail-shredding, actionpacked experience.

The Big Short

中文字幕, Français, Deutsch, 日本語 Drama, 130 mins Director: Adam McKay Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling

15

If you want to understand the banking crisis, or better still fancy an innovative comedy-drama (one nominated for Best Picture Oscar, no less) The Big Short is for you. Based on the true story of four men (Bale, Carell, Gosling and Brad Pitt) who pledge to make banks pay for the housing crisis, it’s a brilliantly acted, funny and accessible look at a troubling and topical subject.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip Kids, 92 mins Director: Walt Becker Starring: Jason Lee, Jesica Ahlberg, Josh Green

U

The chart-topping chipmunk chums return for a fourth instalment, in which the furry friends discover that Dave intends to propose to his girlfriend, who has an obnoxious, bullying son, Miles. Fearing this could spell the end of the band and terrified of gaining a horrid new stepbrother, they decide the union must be stopped at all costs. Trouble is, they only have three days to do it.

Black Mass

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 123 mins 15 Director: Scott Cooper Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch

A thunderously good performance from Depp helps propel this true-life gangster movie straight into the pantheon of the greats. He plays James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, who - while his brother Bill (Cumberbatch) makes the best of a political career - pursues a life of crime, evading capture to become one of the most dangerous hoodlums in US history.

Bridge of Spies Français, Deutsch, Español Drama, 141 mins Director: Steven Spielberg Starring: Tom Hanks, Alan Alda, Amy Ryan

12

Spielberg’s Cold War thriller finds Hanks playing an attorney who must negotiate a prisoner exchange with the Russians. The film’s superb script, part-written by the Coen brothers, wrings every last drop of intrigue from a beautifully told tale and builds up to a masterpiece finale of sustained suspense.

Brooklyn Romance, 109 mins Director: John Crowley Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen

12

‘Welcome to the United States, ma’am.’ So begins the journey of Irish immigrant Eilis (Ronan) in this superb 1950s-set romantic drama. Struggling to adapt to her new life in the Big Apple, she meets Italian-American Tony (Cohen) and embarks on a romance (beautifully rendered by screenwriter Nick Hornby). However, as their love blossoms, events contrive to call Eilis back home. ‘I have a life across the sea,’ she tells Tony. 7

movies Carol

Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Romance, 116 mins 15 Director: Todd Haynes Starring: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Sarah Paulson

From director Todd Haynes comes this tale of forbidden love in 1950s New York. Therese (Mara) meets and falls for Carol (Blanchett). With their bond blossoming into love, a net of disapproval closes in on the couple, and escaping it seems all but impossible. Blanchett is superb as the woman trying to break free from the confines of marriage.

Concussion

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 123 mins Director: Peter Landesman Starring: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks

Creed 12

Whistleblowing biopic starring Smith as real-life forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. When he diagnoses a pro football player with a footballrelated brain trauma, he must fight the powers that be for the truth to be known.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 133 mins Director: Ryan Coogler Starring: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson

12

The seventh film in the Rocky series has beaten the odds to emerge a winner, earning critical plaudits and even an Oscar nomination for Stallone’s craggy supporting turn. Once again, he plays former champ Rocky Balboa, this time serving as mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. Trust us, you will punch the air.

Deadpool

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 108 mins 15 Director: Tim Miller Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein

Former special forces guy Wade Wilson (Reynolds) is riddled with cancer, so when he’s offered the chance of a cure he’s on the operating table before you can say, ‘dodgy experimental surgery’. Waking up, he is indeed cured and has regenerative powers, but he’s also hideously disfigured – and tragically estranged from the love of his life (Baccarin). From this is born the crime-fighter Deadpool, a wisecracking Super Hero who chats to the viewer, riffs on movie tropes and kicks an awful lot of butt. Be warned: Marvel this may be, but it’s a long way away from the relatively cosy likes of The Avengers. It’s violent and profane but thanks to a supremely charming performance it’s very funny and ultimately, sensational entertainment.

“Ryan Reynolds gets the full-throttle wisecracking showcase he deserves in this scabrously funny origin story.” Variety on Deadpool 8

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 120 mins Director: Tom Hooper Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Matthias Schoenaerts

Daddy’s Home 15

Inspired by a true story and featuring another superb performance from Redmayne, The Danish Girl is being hailed as a landmark movie. Set in 1920s Copenhagen, it revolves around Einar (Redmayne), the husband of Danish artist Gerda, who comes to the painful conclusion that he wants to live life as a woman and he and Gerda must work through the repercussions of his decision.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 96 mins 12 Director: Sean Anders Starring: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini

movies

The Danish Girl

Comedy starring Ferrell as the wannabe stepfather to his new wife’s children, and Wahlberg, the layabout dad who returns to win their affections. Pretty soon the two lock horns – a recipe for comedy gold.

How To Be Single

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 110 mins Director: Christian Ditter Starring: Rebel Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Leslie Mann

For those missing their fix of Sex And The City and/or Friends – or, frankly, anyone who fancies an undemanding but sneakily intelligent rom-com – we give you How To Be Single. A brilliant cast is headed by Johnson as Alice, who after splitting up with Josh goes in search of ‘the one’ in the Big Apple, along with her

15

sister (Mann) and wild friend (Wilson) in tow. No, there isn’t much of a plot. But who cares? You can watch Game of Thrones if you want that. The strength of How To Be Single lies in the undeniable wit and verve of its execution, and the fact that it’s ultimately a moving homage to the strength of female friendship.

movies

The Hateful Eight

Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Drama, 168 mins 18 Director: Quentin Tarantino Starring: Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Tarantino’s Western finds Russell’s bounty hunter escorting Jason Leigh to the hangman in Red Rock. But with their journey interrupted by a stopover at Minnie’s Haberdashery, tensions mount and trigger fingers get increasingly itchy. It’s a lengthy film but The Hateful Eight never feels it thanks to masterful direction and an ensemble cast who wring the script for every last drop of tension.

“Nobody does what Tarantino does, and that alone... makes him priceless.” Sight and Sound on The Hateful Eight

In the Heart of the Sea Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 122 mins 12 Director: Ron Howard Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson

Based on the same true story that inspired Moby-Dick, this epic from director Howard finds the crew of the crippled Essex surviving the whale’s attack only to be faced by an even greater challenge – the sea itself.

The Finest Hours

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 109 mins Director: Craig Gillespie Starring: Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Casey Affleck

12

Based on the true story of the most daring rescue in US coastguard history, The Finest Hours flits between two sets of seafarers in 1952 Massachusetts: the guys in a crippled oil tanker headed by Affleck, and Pine’s coastguards who set out to help them. It’s a spectacularly rendered tale of men in flimsy boats versus Mother Nature at her most ferocious. Playing in 3D Audio.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 137 mins Director: Francis Lawrence Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

The futuristic franchise draws to a close and, be warned, this last episode is intense. Once again, Lawrence grabs her bow and arrow as the heroic Katniss, only now her sights are set on the evil President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Meanwhile, with the stage set for a scintillating showdown, our hero must also deal with affairs of the heart. Playing in 3D Audio. 10

The Intern 12

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 121 mins Director: Nancy Meyers Starring: Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, Rene Russo

12

One to make you go ‘Aw…’, The Intern is a heart-warming comedy about 70-year-old widower Ben (De Niro), so bored by retirement that he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Hathaway). Quickly the two are learning important life lessons from each other.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 104 mins 12 Director: Nicholas Hytner Starring: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Jim Broadbent

movies

The Lady in the Van

Smith is wonderful as Mary Shepherd, who in real-life lived in a van on the driveway of writer Alan Bennett’s house for 15 years. Having befriended her, Bennett digs and discovers the moving truth about this strange old lady.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Action, 116 mins Director: Guy Ritchie Starring: Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander

Joy

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Biopic, 106 mins Director: David O. Russell Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper

12

Loosely inspired by the tale of Joy Mangano, inventor of the self-squeezing Miracle Mop, Joy finds its protagonist (Lawrence) pursuing the American dream and trying to sell her invention on the QVC shopping channel. Cooper’s great as the head of QVC, and it’s gratifying to see De Niro in a role worthy of his talents, but it’s Lawrence who steals the show.

Cavill, last seen playing Superman, is Solo, the titular U.N.C.L.E. employee, and Hammer, his Russian partner. Hired by Hugh Grant’s Waverly and ably assisted by Vikander, this pair of unlikely bedfellows spearheads a joint CIA and KGB operation to stop a mysterious criminal organisation setting off an atom bomb.

The Martian

Kung Fu Panda 3

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Family, 85 mins Director: Jennifer Yuh Nelson Voices of: Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman

Sci-Fi, 141 mins Director: Ridley Scott Starring: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor

12

From director Scott and starring Damon in one of his most rewarding roles, The Martian is an enthralling and – literally – cosmic experience. Damon plays astronaut Mark Watney, presumed dead after a fierce storm and left on Mars by his crew. He must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to survive and find a way to tell Earth that he is alive. 11

Frankly, it shouldn’t work, but you’ll have a lot of fun discovering that it does.

Victor Frankenstein Adventure, 110 mins Director: Paul McGuigan Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Jessica Brown Findlay

Just as Guy Ritchie gave Sherlock Holmes a postmodern twist, this re-imagining of the Frankenstein story aims to do the same. McAvoy stars as the doctor but unusually, the story is told from the viewpoint of his assistant, Igor (Radcliffe), as the pair struggle to create a human from salvaged body parts.

A top-notch cast and outstanding direction elevate this biopic of Roman Holiday and Spartacus screenwriter Donald Trumbo, who was jailed in the 1940s after falling foul of anti-communist paranoia. Brilliantly told, with Cranston earning an Academy Award nomination in the central role, his tale is a salutary one.

Plenty of laughs in this Hindi action-comedy, in which a pair of reformed gangsters try to find a husband for their sister. Old habits die hard, however, and the law-breaking pair take to the task with a little too much ‘enthusiasm’. A case of mistaken identity only increases the confusion.

Barmaid Jan Vokes was walking home from work one night when inspiration struck: she’d bred pigeons and whippets, why not a racehorse? That’s where this brilliant, feel-good documentary picks up the story. With her determination matched by her skills of persuasion, Vokes, of Cefn Fforest, South Wales, talked locals into starting a syndicate for the horse’s upkeep. In 2001, Dream Alliance was born and duly trained by Vokes – taking the racing world by storm with several good showings at major meets. Tragedy struck at Aintree, but after the syndicate clubbed together Dream Alliance was back to full fitness and winning at the Welsh National. Next came the Grand National, marking a return to the course where Dream Alliance almost died…

A meeting of old friends in New York was the inspiration behind this surprising documentary exposing the underbelly of the American Dream. To all intents and purposes, male models Mark Reay and Thomas Wirthensohn hooked up as equals, but as Wirthensohn soon discovered, his old pal harboured a secret. Though Mark was outwardly successful – handsome, charismatic and well-dressed, a familiar face at A-list parties and events – he was also homeless. Wirthensohn decided to document his friend’s existence and what he uncovered was a true double life, a man who relentlessly pursued his dreams even when the odds were stacked against him. Eyeopening, uplifting and ultimately inspiring, this is not to be missed.

This Best Documentary, Short Feature Oscar-winning film is a scathing indictment of a barbaric tradition and an intense meditation on the nature of forgiveness. Each year over a thousand Pakistani women are murdered for supposedly compromising the honour of their families. One near-victim was 18-year-old Saba, who after marrying the ‘wrong’ man was kidnapped, shot in the head, bundled into a sack and thrown in a river. Miraculously she survived and promptly sought justice – only to surrender to public pressure and publicly forgive her attackers. Interviews with all concerned mean Obaid-Chinoy’s brave film shines light on an abhorrent crime as well as leaving you to ponder the grey areas of its aftermath.

At Budokan All-Time Greats

There are two types of people in this world: Those who love Animal Collective and those who haven’t got around to hearing them yet. As ever, Painting With bursts with ideas and energy, and sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard.

Southern rockers Black Stone Cherry’s brand new album Kentucky is very much a ‘back to their roots’ affair, full to the brim with chunky riffs and unwavering authenticity.

Like their hero Neil Young, Blitzen Trapper flirt with country, folk and rock; and like Young, their sound is a bruised and soulful synthesis of the three. This raw eighth album may well be their best yet.

One of the greatest live albums of all time, and the record that made Cheap Trick’s name, At Budokan saw them transform somewhat weedy studio material into the hard rockin’ monsters we know today. They’ve never looked back.

Thanks to near-blanket radio play, Elle King’s Ex’s And Oh’s has been unavoidable these past months. Just as well it’s brilliant then, because as this debut album goes to show, King’s smoky vocals and hook-laden tunes are like musical catnip.

The fourth album from Sunderland’s Field Music – and their first since the rapturously received Plumb of 2012 – is a great place to start if you’re not already acquainted with their inventive and melodic take on post-punk.

Jeff Buckley released just one album, the classic Grace, before his tragic death in 1997. Recorded before he began this album, the songs on this compilation include two Smiths covers, including – heartbreakingly – I Know It’s Over.

Kidz Bop Kidz Major Lazer Peace Is The Mission Dance & Electronic

The man behind Major Lazer is none other than über-producer Diplo, twiddler of knobs for small-fry like M.I.A., Britney Spears and Madonna. His fourth butt-shaking album of dancehall and electronics features contributions from Pusha T and Ellie Goulding, among others.

Kidz Bob 31 Kids

The latest Kidz Bop album rolls out the newest chart hits sung for kids by kids, minus the rude bits. It’s fun, and (whisper) plenty of people prefer these versions to the originals. 37

Off The Wall All-Time Greats

This Is Acting Pop

The foundations for Thriller were laid on the first of Jacko’s three epoch-making collaborations with Quincy Jones. Forget all the weirdness and tragedy that dogs the Jacko name these days and wallow in a peerless mix of pop, funk and disco.

Sia Furler made her name penning hits for Christina Aguilera and Rihanna, but for this album has assembled tracks rejected by other artists. Why anybody would decline to sing something as immense as, say, Alive, remains a mystery, but their loss is our gain.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt

Much more music For full album listings, check out your touch screen

Beethoven: Symphonies 4 & 5 Classical

Legendary conductor Harnoncourt announced his retirement in December last year, making this his last recording. Beethoven’s No.5 has been misunderstood, he says. It has nothing to do with destiny, but tells the story of ‘the revolt of the masses’.

Ray LaMontagne Ouroboros Pop

For his sixth album, LaMontagne teams up with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James to channel his inner Waters and Gilmour. Yes, we’re in pastoral-era Pink Floyd territory here, with LaMontagne exploring psychedelic pastures to soothing, transporting effect.

Shelby Lynne Virginian Shelby Lynne is one of the true greats in country music, and here she displays her incredible versatility with influences ranging from soul, blues and pop. Not many artists can reach their fourteenth album and still sound this vital.

Youth: La Giovinezza OST Soundtrack

More from Jarvis Cocker’s award-winning feature series in which he explores the human condition after dark, with stories of night people. As ever, the stories in Jarvis’s dark vigils are accompanied by his own musical selections.

Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek makes notable appearances on this accompaniment to the movie (in which he also stars), alongside David Byrne and Paloma Faith (another singer with a role in the film). The result is a diverse, indieinflected soundtrack.

sustainability

Change is in the Air! is the name we give to our sustainability programme, because we believe that sustainability means changing things for the better. It includes our environment, supply chain and community investment activities.

reducing our aircraft emissions through more efficient, quieter aircraft, innovating on new fuels and reducing our waste.

On environment, we focus our efforts on areas that have the biggest effect on our environmental footprint, including

On community investment, we focus on our much loved, long term charity partnership with Free The Children.

On sustainable design and buying, we work with our designers, buyers and suppliers to improve the social and environmental standards of what we source.

We Day UK Virgin Atlantic are delighted to be co-title supporters of Free The Children’s flagship event in the UK, ‘We Day’. Free The Children’s mission is to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. It’s helping us deliver sustainable change in overseas communities, as well as inspiring young people to ‘be the change’ they want to see in the world, through an empowering schools programme called ‘We Act’.

Change the world at 35,000 feet

Organised by Free The Children, We Day empowers young people to turn one day of inspiration into a full year of service. You cannot buy a ticket to the event – young people earn it by making a commitment to social change as part of the We Act schools programme. This encourages participating students to undertake local and global social actions on the issues they care about, by providing the skills, training and resources to turn their ideas into action.

On 9 March 2016, 12,000 students and teachers from more than 500 schools across the UK arrived at the SSE Arena in London, for a day to celebrate positive change. With an incredible line-up of social activist speakers and performers including singer-songwriter Fleur East,

Academy Award-winning actress and campaigner Marlee Matlin, singer Rita Ora and Professor Brian Cox, the students experienced a fantastic, uplifting day that inspired them to get involved and make a difference.

“If we take action, we can help everyone thrive.” Rita Ora

Our onboard charity collection

You can help support Free The Children’s work, right from your seat. Please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope and hand it to one of our cabin crew. To keep it safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Thank you!

Reduce your carbon footprint and support developing communities

You can offset the carbon emissions associated with your journey. Our scheme, in partnership with award winning offset specialist The CarbonNeutral Company, is designed to help finance renewable energy and resource conservation projects that support communities in parts of the world we fly to. Check out Retail Therapy magazine or speak to a member of our cabin crew for more information. You can also visit virginatlantic.com/changeisintheair and put your flight details into the carbon calculator.
