On the cover Georgio Moroder

Giorgio Moroder’s Musical Milestones

2

I Feel Love Donna Summer Written and produced by Moroder and, simply put, the record that became the template for modern-day dance music. Its brilliant combination of electronic energy and soaring melody reverberates to this day. “It was like magic,” says Giorgio in our Vera special. “That combination of the hard disco, electronic, metallic kind of sound and then the sweet voice of Donna.”

Midnight Express soundtrack The score that opened the door to Hollywood for the multi-talented Italian. “I got into the movies basically with the help of Donna’s song being a big hit,” he says. “Alan Parker called me and said he wanted a piece of music in the style, the adrenalin, of I Feel Love.” Flashdance, Scarface, Top Gun and countless other soundtracks followed.

o i g r Gio

r e d o r o M J D r a t s r Supe

The gentleman born Giovanni Giorgio Moroder in Italy in 1940 is, inarguably, one of the founders of modern-day dance-pop. But any danger that that might engender a certain arrogance was dispelled within seconds when we met to record our Vera special about his incredible musical resumé. Giorgio was delightfully modest and irreverent, as we discussed a career of extraordinary electronic innovation. Moroder’s new album Déjà Vu, his first in his own name for 30 years, features a song that wryly observes his renewed coolness and “superstar DJ” status, 74 Is The New 24. He jokes that he’s now updated that title by a year. The album credits read like the velvet-rope VIP area of one of the clubs he travels the world playing, crammed with such guests as Sia, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, Kelis, Britney Spears and Foxes. “I’m quite in beautiful company,” he beams.

Call Me Blondie Another silver screen highlight, from the soundtrack of American Gigolo — and Giorgio makes it sound so easy. “I composed the song and I sent it to Deborah Harry. She was watching the movie and she told me not too long ago that she loved the colour and the feel of it. She wrote the lyrics which fit the movie so well, about this guy who was a gigolo.”

But then he always has been, and Giorgio’s sheer lust for life comes shining through the conversation. We cover his pioneering synthesiser work, which began with his original of Chicory Tip’s 1972 UK number one single Son of My Father; landmarks like Donna Summer’s Love To Love You Baby (“we took the lights down and she moaned it in a matter of ten minutes”); and sessions with everyone from Debbie Harry to Daft Punk, with whom he won his fourth Grammy last year for his work on their album Random Access Memories. In the Moroder trophy cabinet, the current tally is Grammys: 4, Oscars: 3, but don’t rule out more changes to that scoreline. He talks with pride about his three Academy Awards, for writing and production on Top Gun, Flashdance and Midnight Express.

Together In Electric Dreams Giorgio Moroder with Philip Oakey A top three UK hit single from 1984 that’s more fondly remembered than the movie of the same name, even if Moroder laughingly points out that it contained his acting debut “for exactly 17 seconds.” But the voice of Human League frontman Oakey was the perfect match for Giorgio’s canvas of synthesisers.

Then there’s the hit singles Together In Electric Dreams with Philip Oakey, Cat People with David Bowie…it’s the old stunt about how many people you could cram into a Mini, restyled as how many hits you can squeeze into 90 minutes. It should all be in a book, but the youngest 75-year-old in the world is too busy to write it. “When my moustache is not growing anymore, then I’m retiring, and maybe then I write,” he laughs. “Maybe tomorrow, maybe in ten years.” Words by Paul Sexton The full version of this exclusive interview can be found in our audio section – for more details please turn to page 38.

Déjà Vu Giorgio Moroder His star-packed return to top billing in his own right, and an impressive update of his classic disco sound for the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) generation. “I have all great, beautiful singers, I’m very lucky with my set-up,” he says. “Sia: amazing, total professional. Kylie: what a darling, fabulous to work with.” And so he continues to enthuse. 75 Is The New 25.

movies

The Age Of Adaline

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Romance, 113 mins 12 Director: Lee Toland Krieger Starring: Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford

No, she’s not a vampire, but even so Adaline (Lively) has stayed 29-years-old for eight decades. In hiding to protect her secret, she finally begins to come out of her shell when she falls for Huisman and then meets his parents (Ellen Burstyn and Ford). Romantic and affecting, you might find you ‘have something in your eye’ by the end of this one.

Aloha Romance, 105 mins 12 Director: Cameron Crowe Starring: Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams

Crowe, the director who brought us Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, knows his way around a romance. So when Cooper’s military contractor returns to Honolulu, reconnects with an old flame (McAdams) while also falling for a new one (Stone), what emerges is a sweet, quirky and beautifully acted love story bearing Crowe’s distinctive touch.

Ant-Man Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Action, 117 mins Director: Peyton Reed Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Corey Stoll

12

Taking a break from the usual epic approach beloved of Marvel, Ant-Man thinks small, while also adding a dose of comedy to the mix. Not only that, but with Rudd as a conman who must shrink in order to pull off a most unusual theft, it may well be the world’s first Super Hero heist movie. It’s certainly the most entertaining. Playing in 3D Audio.

“ The casting of Paul Rudd signals that intelligence, humour and self-deprecation are the priorities.” The Guardian on Ant-Man Cinderella Español, Français, Deutsch Family, 113 mins Director: Kenneth Branagh Starring: Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden

Beyond The Reach Deutsch Thriller, 91 mins 12 Director: Jean-Baptiste Léonetti Starring: Michael Douglas, Jeremy Irvine, Hanna Mangan Lawrence

Currently enjoying a late-career renaissance, Douglas is on tremendous form here as a hunter who pays a scout to help him find big game. However, something goes wrong between the two men (no spoilers) and they end up in a deadly game of cat and mouse. A simple plot is mined for nail-biting thrills and the result is as tense as it sounds. 6

U

With Downton Abbey’s James as the titular Cinders, Madden her beau, Helena Bonham Carter as a typically batty fairy godmother and Blanchett deliciously evil as the stepmother, this update of an old classic ticks all the boxes. Prepare to be stunned, meanwhile, by Branagh’s lush direction, making this a modern classic in the making, and a treat on every level.

The D Train

Chappie Español, Français, Deutsch Sci-Fi, 120 mins Director: Neill Blomkamp Starring: Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman

A sci-fi thriller set in a near-future where a police droid begins to develop sentient feelings. Pretty soon Chappie finds himself at the centre of a fierce battle between the good, his creator Deon (Patel), the bad, Vincent (Jackman), and the ugly (the South African rap duo Die Antwoord). The result is as visually stunning and actionpacked as it is engaging and thought-provoking.

15

Español, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 101 mins Directors: Andrew Mogel, Jarrad Paul Starring: Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn

15

How far would you go to be popular? That’s the question posed by this outrageous and unpredictable comedy. Black stars as the organiser of a high school reunion who wants to invite the school’s most popular – and now most successful – ex-pupil (Marsden). When he catches the guy up, however, he gets more than he bargained for, and pretty soon things get dark (i.e. funny)…

mother’s 35-year-old boyfriend, Monroe (Skarsgård). By viewing events through Minnie’s eyes as well as the entries in her audio diary, the film refuses to moralise on a very dubious situation and instead emerges as a funny, warm and humorous account of a subject matter rarely tackled. Not to be missed.

This unapologetically frank look at teenage sexuality was the winner of the Grand Prix at the Berlin film Festival. Set in San Francisco in 1976 it boasts a standout performance from Powley as 15-year-old Minnie, who experiences a profound awakening when she loses her virginity. The problem is the guy in question – her

Dope Español, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 103 mins 15 Director: Rick Famuyiwa Starring: Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons

Disney Tomorrowland: A World Beyond

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Adventure, 130 mins Director: Brad Bird Starring: George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie

12

Based on – and this is probably a first – a zone in Disneyland, and fired by the prodigious imagination of its director Bird, Tomorrowland is a riot of ideas and adventure. The plot revolves around Robertson discovering a portal to another world – but to say much more would be to spoil what is one of the year’s most colourful and consistently surprising family friendly blockbusters.

Billed as a coming-ofage tale for the hip-hop generation, comedy-drama Dope stars Moore as Malcolm, a rap-obsessed high-school kid. He’s also a bit of a goody-twoshoes – until, that is, the night he and two pals finds themselves at a drug dealer’s party. From there, the trio embark on an occasionally dangerous adventure marked by some very bad decisions indeed.

movies Fantastic Four Action, 100 mins Director: Josh Trank Starring: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan

12

Brand-new new origin story for the quartet from New York, who teleport to an alternate universe and find themselves transformed into superheroes. First the foursome must come to terms with their incredible new powers. Next they must save the world from their former friend turned enemy, Dr Doom (Toby Kebbell).

Entourage

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 104 mins Director: Doug Ellin Starring: Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jeremy Piven

“ [Trank] builds this...comic book story from the ground up and gives his gifted cast room to breathe life into characters.” BBC on Fantastic Four

15

Playing the same comedic, bromance-heavy notes as its TV counterpart, this big-screen adaptation finds movie star Vincent and his ‘boys’ Eric, Turtle and Johnny tearing things up in style-and-starobsessed LA. Brash, loud and very funny, it may have been given a rough ride by critics, but one thing’s for sure: with over fifty celebrity cameos, glamorous cars and locales, Entourage is never boring.

Fast & Furious 7

Español, Français, Deutsch, 中文字幕 Action, 137 mins Director: James Wan Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jason Statham

12

Though tinged with sadness (the film is dedicated to star Paul Walker, who died in a car accident prior to its release), Fast & Furious 7 remains the very best of guilty pleasures. As usual the story (Vin Diesel wants revenge) is a mere excuse for chrome-plated, turbo-fuelled eye candy. Are they fast? Indeed they are. Are they furious? Absolutely livid. Playing in 3D Audio.

Focus

Far From The Madding Crowd Romance, 119 mins Director: Thomas Vinterberg Starring: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen

12

This critically adored mounting of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel is everything you want of its source material: romantic, windswept and ravishing to look at it. Set in 1870s Dorset – the bleak English countryside so beloved of Hardy – it stars Mulligan as the heiress courted by three men but still determined to forge her own path in life.

8

Français, Deutsch Crime, 105 mins Directors: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa Starring: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Adrian Martinez

15

Smith is back to his best in this caper comedy about two con-artists forced to work together. He plays grizzled veteran Nicky, while Robbie essays the young upstart Jess. When they separately become involved in the same scam they must work together to stay alive. Featuring appealing turns from the leads as well as nailbiting setpieces, this is superior escapist entertainment.

Very funny near-the-knuckle comedy starring Ferrell as a businessman who, when he’s framed and sentenced to jail, decides to prepare for the upcoming ordeal. On hand to help him acclimatise is Darnell (Hart), who convinces King he’s a hardened exconvict. Trouble is, Darnell is probably even more clueless than his pupil…

Animation, 94 mins Director: Tim Johnson Voices of: Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin

U

DreamWorks animated comedy with a star-studded voice cast (Parsons, Rihanna, Martin and Jennifer Lopez) in the story of a lovable extra-terrestrial called Oh. While on the run from his own people, Oh seeks sanctuary on Earth where he hits it off with an adventurous little girl (Rihanna). As their friendship blossoms, each discovers the true meaning of the word ‘home’.

Inside Out

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Animation, 102 mins Directors: Pete Docter, Ronaldo Del Carmen Voices of: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black

U

In the tradition of Up, Wall-E and Toy Story 3, Inside Out is Pixar at its boundary-pushing best. Funny and emotionally affecting, it takes place almost entirely in the head of 11-year-old Riley, who is controlled by emotions living in her brain – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – which then come into conflict as they try to navigate Riley through a new start in life.

Jurassic World

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Action, 124 mins Director: Colin Trevorrow Starring: Chris Pratt, Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard

12

The thrill ride of the year finds man-of-themoment Pratt heading the cast as a new Jurassic theme park opens on the site of the original. All goes well until the park’s newest attraction - the genetically modified, T. rex dwarfing Indominus rex predator dino escapes and the bodies start piling up, despite dino-wrangler Owen’s (Pratt) warning of the dangers of tinkering with Jurassic genetics. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in the second film, at first it’s ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’, and then it’s running and screaming. Playing in 3D Audio.

The Longest Ride

Romance, 128 mins 12 Director: George Tillman Jr. Starring: Britt Robertson, Scott Eastwood, Alan Alda

The Legend of Barney Thomson Comedy, 96 mins Director: Robert Carlyle Starring: Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson, Ray Winstone

The feature film directorial debut of actor Carlyle is a ‘hilariously gruesome’ and ‘deliciously macabre’ black comedy about a mediocre Glaswegian barber (Carlyle) who embarks on a new life as a serial killer. Support comes from Ray Winstone, Ashley Jensen and Emma Thompson, who is outstanding as Barney’s mother. 10

15

Based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, this sweet romantic-drama stars Eastwood as Luke, a former champion bull rider, who goes on a date with Sophia (Robertson), who’s about to leave for a new life in New York. Though they hit it off the pair decide the relationship can never work. But when they come across an accident on the way home, the discovery of some love letters sets them on an altogether different path.

movies

Mad Max Fury Road

The long version of the plot goes like this: when Imperator Furiosa (Theron) attempts to free the captive wives of Immortan Joe, Max (Hardy) finds himself at the centre of an epic cross-desert pursuit. The short version is this: there’s a chase. And what a chase it is! We also have the original Mad Max on board too! Playing in 3D Audio.

Maggie Deutsch Horror, 95 mins Director: Henry Hobson Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin, Joely Richardson

15

Set in a post-zombie apocalypse US, Breslin stars as Maggie, who has the virus and will soon ‘turn’ – with all the usual homicidal tendencies present and correct. Loving father Schwarzenegger elects to keep her at home, despite the danger to his family. Distrust, paranoia and the mounting threat of Maggie’s transformation combine with the terrible knowledge of the inevitable.

Magic Mike XXL

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Comedy, 115 mins 15 Director: Gregory Jacobs Starring: Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer

Love & Mercy

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Biopic, 121 mins Director: Bill Pohlad Starring: John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks

12

Love & Mercy follows two periods of Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s life: the emerging psychosis of the 1960s, as the tortured genius struggled and ultimately failed to follow up his masterpiece Pet Sounds, and the limbo of the 1980s. Dano is exquisite as the younger Wilson, while Cusack depicts the broken man of later with consummate skill.

Magic Mike: a film about male strippers that, thanks to Tatum’s central performance, brilliant dance scenes and a tongue firmly in its well-toned cheek, was unexpectedly brilliant. This sequel: more of the same as Mike decides to rejoin the Kings of Tampa for a last hurrah, packing his thong and setting off to Myrtle Beach for a stripping convention.

“ Mann, Cooke and Cyler deserve to be stars of tomorrow, right now. This film ... pulls the ground out from under you.” Rolling Stone on Me And Earl And The Dying Girl

Minions

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Drama, 105 mins Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon Starring: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke

12

Indie hit, Me and Earl And The Dying Girl finds high schooler Greg occupied with three things: hanging out with buddy Earl, shooting parodies of classic movies and trying to be cool – with the emphasis very much on the latter. 12

Life is all mapped out for Quentin. Until, that is he meets Margo (Delevingne) and embarks on a momentous evening of fun. However, when Margo goes missing lovelorn Quentin sets off in pursuit, inspired by a series of cryptic messages. Funny and insightful, with a startling performance from a model-turned-actor Delevingne, Paper Towns is a gem.

Nightingale

Français, Deutsch, Español Drama, 83 mins Director: Elliott Lester Starring: David Oyelowo

A remarkable portrait of one man’s downward spiral, Nightingale features an outstanding performance from Oyelowo inhabiting the part of isolated war veteran Peter. Unease and dread build just as surely as Peter unwinds, and the fact that you can’t take your eyes off it is a testament to Oyelowo’s powerhouse central turn.

Poltergeist

Horror, 94 mins 15 Director: Gil Kenan Starring: Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kennedi Clements

This update of the classic original finds Rockwell and family moving into a new home, only to find it possessed by all manner of demonic spirits. As if supernatural mayhem wasn’t enough, the ghoulies then take the family’s daughter, provoking a fightback of epic dimensions. It is, as you’d expect from producer Sam ‘Evil Dead’ Raimi, very, very scary indeed.

Run All Night Français, Deutsch Action, 114 mins Director: Jaume Collet-Serra Starring: Liam Neeson, Ed Harris, Joel Kinnaman Pixels

日本語, Français, Deutsch Comedy, 106 mins Director: Chris Columbus Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan

12

In 1982, NASA sent an ‘Earth culture’ capsule into space. Unfortunately, aliens misinterpreted the videogames included as an act of war and responded in kind. Now the present day planet must turn to Sandler’s team of ageing game pros to save Earth from Donkey Kong, Pac Man and the like. The result is very funny, weirdly surreal, full of action.

Continuing his dominance (okay, let’s face it, his monopoly of…) the craggy action-hero market, Neeson stars as Mafia hitman Jimmy Conlon. When the mob put a hit out on his son, Jimmy’s forced to go up against his former boss (Harris) to protect his boy at all costs. Together they must outwit the cops and contract killers to survive the night.

As buildings collapse and tidal waves ram ships into the Golden Gate Bridge, pilot Johnson must locate his wife and daughter. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue and Paul Giamatti are among those caught up in the artfully framed devastation. Blockbusters don’t get much more blockbustin’ than this. Playing in 3D Audio.

14

15

Growing up in Texas, 15-year-old Scout (Ennenga) and her younger sister Lulu are two peas in a pod. Joining up with suicidal mental patient Sam (Frecheville), Scout goes on a road trip that will change her life and that of Sam and Lulu too. With great support from the likes of Ellen Burstyn, Jane Seymour and especially Danny Glover as the cop trying to track down the errant pair, this is a beautifully drawn coming-of-age tale with a warm heart and a soft centre.

movies

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel PG

This sequel to the silver-haired original reunites most of the original cast (Dench, Smith, Nighy…) as well as adding Richard Gere into the mix. Just as before, the magic is in the myriad of subplots involving the eccentric, sometimes-lovelorn residents of the titular retirement home. Exotic Indian marriages, ardent suitors, English irony – all is packaged delightfully in one of the most charming films for years.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water Français, Deutsch, Español Family, 93 mins Director: Paul Tibbett Starring: Tom Kenny, Antonio Banderas, Bill Fagerbakke

U

An ever-reliable delivery system for jokes that delight both young and old, Spongebob sets out on a second, slightly belated (the last one was out more than 10 years ago) cinematic adventure. It finds him on a quest to recover a stolen recipe, and with Banderas joining the fun as the diabolical pirate Burger Beard, this is freewheeling anarchic fun.

Southpaw Français, Deutsch, Español Action, 124 mins Director: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, Oona Laurence

15

Brace yourselves, fight fans, this boxing movie in the grand tradition of Rocky is, as one critic says, ‘an emotional powerhouse’. Much of the credit goes to buffed-up star Gyllenhaal, who brings a raw intensity to the role. He plays boxer Billy Hope who finds himself in the gutter after a family tragedy but then, thanks to the tutelage of coach Titus ‘Tick’ Willis (Forest Whitaker), gets a shot at the world light heavyweight title. The scene is set for the kind of pulsating, punishing boxing climax you would expect from a cast of this calibre and Antoine ‘Training Day’ Fuqua behind the camera. No, it’s not especially original, but Southpaw pushes the right buttons and it pushes them with style.

Spy

Warning: Contains scenes unsuitable for nervous flyers. Action, 120 mins 15 Director: Paul Feig Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law

McCarthy is at her brilliant best in this role-reversal spoof on countless Bond and Bourne movies. She plays Susan, a deskbound, behind-the-scenes brains for high profile spies such as Bradley Fine (Law) and Rick Ford (Jason Statham). However, when security is compromised, Susan must go into action on the frontline herself, going deep undercover to prevent a world crisis.

Ted 2

Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 116 mins Director: Seth MacFarlane Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried

Fans of the first Ted can rejoice safe in the knowledge that the sequel delivers another dose of bawdy and surreal comedy. When foulmouthed cuddly toy Ted is declared property of the government, he hires an inexperienced lawyer and embarks on a seemingly hopeless legal battle to regain his rightful legal status. 15

As in the first one, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back to 1984 to save Sarah Connor (Game of Thrones’ Clarke) and finds himself allied with the Guardian (Schwarzenegger). Big on spectacle and laughs, it’s a fine addition to one of cinema’s greatest franchises. Playing in 3D Audio.

Comedy, 91 mins Director: Ken Scott Starring: Vince Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson, Dave Franco

15

This (very) raunchy comedy stars Vaughn as a hard-working small business owner who, with his two associates (Wilkinson and Franco), travel to Europe to close a vital deal. However, what begins as a routine trip goes off the rails in every imaginable way, including an unplanned stop at a massive fetish event.

Vacation

Français, Deutsch, Español, 中文字幕 Comedy, 99 mins 15 Directors: John Francis Daley, Jonathan M. Goldstein Starring: Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo

As much a remake as it is a sequel, this new entry in the National Lampoon’s Vacation series finds Rusty Griswold taking his family on a road trip to Walley World. Needless to say the results are as chaotic and uproariously funny as they ever were, featuring some surprise cameos and a scene with raw sewage that you won’t forget in a hurry.

Trainwreck

Español, Français, Deutsch , 中文字幕 Comedy, 125 mins Director: Judd Apatow Starring: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson

Comedian-of-the-moment Schumer plays Amy, who at the tender age of 13 is told by her father ‘monogamy isn’t realistic’. Fast forward 23 years and Amy is, as she says herself, ‘a modern chick who does what she wants.’ Which inevitably involves drinking enormous quantities of alcohol and dating loads of guys. Until, that is, she meets somebody new 16

(Hader). Will the course of true love run smooth? Well, considering this comes from Judd Apatow, the producer of Bridesmaids and the director of Knocked Up, and stars the woman they’re calling the funniest in America, the answer is a resounding no. It’s funny, it’s outrageous, and it is most definitely not your average romantic comedy.

Amy 128 mins

15

Be warned: this portrait of Amy Winehouse, a prodigious talent whose life was cut short by addiction, is by no means an easy viewing experience. Without narration, the tale is told via her own lyrics, scrawled on screen like diary entries, as well as home-movie footage and audio interviews with key players, including her father and Blake Fielder-Civil. Neither come off well, but as footage of standup comedians jesting about her deterioration go to show, there was no shortage of bystanders either.

Toe Tag Parole: To Live and Die on Yard A 79 mins

Featuring unprecedented access to more than 600 Californian prisoners, this documentary shines a light on what its makers, Oscar-winning documentarians Alan and Susan Raymond, call ‘America’s other death penalty’ – life without parole. As one of the inmates says, ‘It’s not better than the death sentence, because it is the death sentence.’ As the film shows, however, there is a glimmer of light thanks to The Progressive Programming Facility, in which prisoners embark on a course of self-improvement while pledging to keep clear of violence, racial tensions, gang activity and drug and alcohol use. In doing so the system offers them something they thought they would never feel again – hope.

Best of Enemies 88 mins

15

This brilliant, thought-provoking documentary both tells the tale of a legendary rivalry and documents a changing media and political landscape. It takes us back to 1968, when, in a bid to improve ratings, the ABC network employed the great thinkers Gore Vidal (liberal) and William F. Buckley (conservative) to debate the issues of the day live on TV. 22

12

Beware: this film will change the way you think about health food. Entertaining and informative, it sees filmmaker Damon Gameau embarking on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high-sugar diet – by consuming only ‘healthy’ foods.

Ballers 30 mins

‘Football has a way of making a man feel invincible,’ growls Spencer Strassmore in this HBO comedy-drama. Mind you, the character’s played by Dwayne Johnson, who probably feels invincible when he catches sight of his own reflection. Sure enough, the man previously known as The Rock cuts an imposing and impressive figure as an ex-player trying to come to terms with his retirement from the game. Determined not to drop off the radar completely, he’s using his legend status to mentor other players. It all adds up to a cracking show with plenty of backstabbing, plenty of bling and zippy one-liners.

The C Word 90 mins

Based on a bestselling account of a woman’s brave fight against breast cancer, The C Word is as funny as it is heartwrenching. Sheridan Smith is superb as Lisa, who makes her personal battle public – and in doing so wins a legion of fans. After this, you’ll be among them.

If you saw Breaking Bad then you’ll remember Bob Odenkirk’s rascally lawyer, Saul. He was the one who stole every scene. Game of Thrones is back and it’s just as ripe with intrigue, oversexed and violent as ever. This opening episode of the highly anticipated season five finds Daenerys struggling to maintain order in Meereen, while Jon Snow has similar problems at the Wall.

Sorry, all you fans of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but the duo don’t return for this second series; instead we have a new story, a new setting and a whole new line-up to savour. Witnesses 60 mins per episode

Six-part miniseries Witnesses is the one they say is creepier than Nordic noir – which means it’s pretty darn creepy indeed. Set in a French coastal town, things begin in suitably grisly fashion when bodies are exhumed and then arranged to look like the perfect family. More macabre discoveries add to the mystery as cops work

to discover who is behind the strange tableaux, while suspicion also begins to fall upon one of the detectives involved. Critically acclaimed, this is one to rate along those aforementioned Nordic mysteries, such as The Killing and The Bridge. Giorgio Moroder - Talks to Paul Sexton

Days Gone By Dance & Electronic/Domino Radio

Exclusively on Vera

The hotly tipped Bob Moses (a duo, rather than one guy called Bob) use old-style band dynamics to make post-club house. Expect sumptuous, unrushed downtempo grooves with the occasional jazzy flourish and you will not be disappointed.

In 1975, Giorgio Moroder remixed Donna Summer’s Love to Love You Baby, turning it into a 17-minute floor filling epic and cementing his place in music history as a genre defining ground-breaker. The fact that this was merely the launch pad for an extraordinary life in music makes Moroder one of the all-time greats. In this exclusive conversation with Paul Sexton, the man that Daft Punk paid musical homage to on their Grammy award winning, Random Access Memories, tells his incredible story from sugar-coated pop performer to three-time Oscar winner right up to modern day superstar DJ with a pull strong enough to attract the likes of Kylie, Sia and Britney to appear on his latest album, Déjà Vu.

Calexico Edge Of The Sun Alternative

Album eight finds the altcountry rockers playing to their considerable strengths, with hook-laden songs lent extra verve by fellow travellers such as Iron and Wine’s Sam Beam and Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses. You know what they say. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Bach To Moog (A Realisation For Electronics And Orchestra) Classical

What do you get when you cross a vintage Moog-synthesiser sound with the work of Bach, the violin prodigy Jennifer Pike and Craig Leon, former producer for The Fall and Blondie? Answer: an utterly unique sonic experience.

Biters

Everything Everything

Electric Blood Rock

Get To Heaven Alternative

Hailing from Earache Records, home to such extreme-metal luminaries as Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror, Biters are very much the real deal – assuming you consider the provision of Pistols-meetsHendrix rock both ‘real’ and a ‘deal’, that is. 38

Craig Leon, Jennifer Pike & Sinfionetta Cracovia

Nobody does intricate and literary quite like Everything Everything. With a sound that mixes the cerebral likes of postpunk heroes Talking Heads with Franz Ferdinand, not to mention a willingness to experiment, EE look set to rule the indie roost for some time to come.

Berlin Rock

Work It Out Pop

The recent resurgence in downtuned stoner rock has brought some interesting names to the fore, not least of them Kadavar. Yes, they have weighty riffs and a doomy atmosphere, but also a swirl of Hawkwindesque psychedelia to keep your synapses snapping.

The English singer-songwriter’s second album is, like her first, a perfect concoction of folk and pop, as well as a fair few points between. In short, this is the reason Rose has shot from being a hotly tipped next big thing to a firm festival favourite.

Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland All Time Greats

Hendrix’s third album was also his last. But what an album to go out on. A sprawling, daring, freewheeling masterpiece that seems to have improved over the years, it features All Along the Watchtower, Crosstown Traffic and Voodoo Chile – and that’s just for starters.

Georgia Dance & Electronic/Domino Radio

Déjà Vu Pop

Her formative years behind the counter of a record shop helped Londoner Georgia Barnes absorb a myriad of influences – Little Dragon, Missy Elliott, The Knife – all of whom make their presence known on this unique and startling album.

Health advice DVT is more likely to strike if you are immobile for a long time (post-operative patients are at risk), so long-haul flyers should take the following precautions… — D rink lots of fluid and avoid excess alcohol. — K eep your circulation going during the flight by wiggling your toes and ankles, taking a walk up and down the aisle if possible. — C heck out the Virgin health video for further health tips.

You might get three surveys from us, a couple during your trip and one about a week afterwards, so if you've already completed a survey, we're really grateful! We love to hear all your feedback, about your whole experience, so please let us know your thoughts if you can spare a few minutes, just click on the link in the invitation we sent you. Thanks… 41

sustainability

Change is in the Air is the name we give to our sustainability strategy, because we believe that sustainability means changing things for the better. Change is in the Air includes both our environment and community investment programmes.

Feel good food When you think about it, we do a lot more than just fly aircraft. As well as purchasing everything from jet fuel to envelopes, we serve over 12.5 million meals per year onboard and in our global clubhouses. So we want to make sure the things we buy and provide for our passengers are as sustainable as possible. We’re committed to offering our customers the finest food and drink experience we can. We were the first (and remain the only) airline to partner with the Sustainable Restaurant Association, now known as Food Made Good, back in March 2013.

They benchmark caterers against a detailed set of criteria, covering three pillars of sustainability: people, product and planet, and give each caterer an independently verified star rating – think the ‘Michelin stars of sustainability’. As well as achieving a one star rating, we have set nine further specific standards for our catering suppliers, including things like fair trade, animal welfare, employment standards and sustainable palm oil. Over the last two years we’ve gained real insight into the sustainability of our catering operations globally, and we’re really pleased to say that Gate Gourmet, who provide a lot of our UK and US catering and represent 68% of all flights, now fully meet our sustainability standards. The rest are not far behind and we anticipate that during 2016 all our inflight catering, as well as the catering in our clubhouses, will meet the new standards. You can read more about our standards, and our overall sustainability strategy, on our website: virgin-atlantic.com/changeisintheair

This month we launched our feature documentary ‘787 – A Quiet Movement’. The three minute video introduces our new 787 aircraft and the features which will help us to achieve our ambitious noise targets. Keep an eye out when whizzing through our onboard entertainment.

Our partnership with Free The Children is fantastic. Free The Children’s mission is to create a world where all young people are free to achieve their fullest potential as agents of change. It’s helping us deliver sustainable change in overseas communities, as well as inspiring young people in the UK to ‘be the change’ they want to see in the world, through an empowering schools’ programme. You can help support their work, right from your seat. Please place any loose change or foreign currency in the Change for Children envelope with your headset and hand it to one of our cabin crew. To keep it safe, please don’t leave it in your seat pocket. Your donation will help support international sustainable community development and inspire young people in the UK to take action. Thank you! We’re continuously working to reduce our impact on the environment; reducing our greenhouse gas emissions with more efficient fleet, helping drive the creation of low carbon aviation fuels for the future, and working to reduce our noise footprint. On the ground, we’re focussing on smarter ways to manage our energy, vehicles, water and waste. And we’re also helping our designers, buyers and suppliers to create more sustainable supply chains. Want to do your bit? Start by offsetting the carbon emissions associated with your journey. Our scheme, in partnership with award winning offset specialist The CarbonNeutral Company, is designed to help finance renewable energy and resource conservation projects all over the world. Look in Retail Therapy to offset onboard or visit virginatlantic. com/changeisintheair and put your flight details into the carbon calculator.
