LIRC Achievements LIRC LOGO The Lirc Logo was finalised and installed on acryllic in the Primary & Secondary Libraries. The week long launch included LIRC Logo M&M’s, pencils, bookmarks and jewelry. The image and tag line, where knowledge grows, encapsulate our purpose. PRIMARY & SECONDARY NETVIBES The development of Netvibe sites has improved access to information by providing easy pathways for students. It includes links to e-books, audiobooks, recommended websites and information literacy links for skill development.. See links below. Primary netvibes Secondary netvibes SIMPLIFIED CHINESE This collection has grown significantly this year and is well used by our CFL learners. It includes fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels. PICTURE BOOKS All picture books were labelled with the first letter of the authors surname

allowing younger students to locate titles quickly while learning the alphabet. INTEGRATION OF CHINESE NON-FICTION All Primary & Secondary Chinese nonfiction collections have been integrated into the English non-fiction collections. This allows easier access to information in both Chinese and English and has resulted in better use of our Chinese resources.

SUCCESS!

PRIMARY & SECONDARY

PLAYAWAY COLLECTIONS Primary & Secondary Playaway collections have proved popular as students discover the ease and portability of these MP3 devices. They also provide extra support for second language users. Thanks to the RAPT for their generous donation of funds to build this collection. NEW IMACS The Primary Library now hosts a suite of 26 x 22 iMac computers. It provides space for a full class as well as small groups and individuals. This space is used by classes to support Units of Inquiry as well as providing additional OPAC access. These iMacs complement the College laptop program.

SIMPLIFIED CHINESE

PLAYAWAYS

LIRC achievements cont. GRAPHIC NOVELS Primary & Secondary collections have been expanded due to popularity. The visual scaffolding provided by the graphic format assists understanding. Japanese Manga is one of the most popular formats with our readers. ICT Professional Collection A new collection of professional resources selected by Ania Zielinska was created and will be located in the Red Door. Items can be checked out through the LIRC.

LCD Display Screens

In early 2010, an LCD screen was added to the Primary and Secondary Library. They have proved to be an excellent promotional and communication tool to reach students. Items for sharing included Lower, Middle and Upper Top 10 Reads updated 5 times per year; Primary and Secondary Book Trailers, LIRC Book Week Video, Peer Support Video.

Policy Development The LIRC Collection Development Policy was revisited and updated. It will be presented to CLT in early 2011 for ratification. The LIRC Wiki Procedures Manual continues to be updated. Ms Walker joined the ICT steering committee as part of a team to act as a strategic advisory for the College Leadership Team. Our main tasks were: 1. ICT Vision 2. ICT Strategy and Development Plan 3. ICT Policy 4. Acceptable Use and Social Media Policy Oliver Developments Serials module was enhanced to include content page alerts. The Olly interface OPAC for younger students was improved for Mac use. Two training sessions were held to update staff of past and future improvements. A major upgrade this summer will improve functionality especially stocktaking and OPAC interface. We will be able to begin stocktake in 2011-12.

DP RESOURCE LIST

Built with the assistance of ESF funding What a perfect opportunity to build our DP collection, thanks to support from ESF we added over 200 titles to our Chinese, English A1, Geography, Pyschology, Drama & Art lists. All books can be identified easily with DP label and are accessible from OPAC DP list.

PYP Learner Profile, Attitudes & Key Concept

Battle of the Books LIRC staff supported a Primary and Secondary team this year. Students were encouraged and supported to read from a list of 20 titles. We are looking for C&S students to take on the role in 2011-12. Physical Space Art works were displayed, more signage was installed and Library displays showcased Themes and Authors. We look forward to improvements in layout and design of the secondary library in 2011-12.

Books were selected to generate thought-provoking discussion about the PYP attitudes and Learner Profiles and to give students and teachers greater understanding of varying aspects of the positive attitudes the PYP hopes students will develop towards people, the environment and learning. Added 287 Learner Profile, 95 Key Concepts, 98 Attitudes titles.

PHOTOS FROM THIS YEAR

So much to appreciate. Wonderful

resources, space, students, staff and facilities. Technology support provided by Red Door was superb. They have enabled us to achieve so much more. That doesn’t mean we can’t make improvements, stay tuned for more exciting developments in 2011-2012.

LIRC Volunteers/Work Experience Parent Volunteers Since it’s foundation, the RC LIRC has been supported by a dedicated team of Parent volunteers who give generously of their time because they value the important services the Library provides. This year parents volunteered 214 hours, enabling the LIRC to provide diverse collections and services on a daily basis.Volunteers were recognized at an end of year morning tea. Community & Service (C&S) C&S students contributed 438 hours to the LIRC this year. They created Top Ten keynotes which they converted to iMovie files for screening on LCD displays; downloaded book trailers, covered and shelved books, managed circulation and created displays. Besides providing extra support, they benefited personally by increasing their technology skill-set and gaining a better understanding of LIRC collections, locations and operations.

Professional Work Placements

THE GANG

We welcomed 2 students from HKU Space in May for 2 weeks, totaling 160 hours of work experience. It was a mutually beneficial experience for all and we look forward to accepting more trainee librarians in the future. Yr 11 Work Experience We accepted our first Yr 11 student for work experience in may for one week (40 hrs). Once again a worthwhile and mutually beneficial experience.

CHECKING ORDERS

Library Monitors Ms Chan our Primary Librarian runs a very active Library Monitor program for students in Yrs 5 & 6. They provide invaluable support and contributed over 150 hours.

Total Volunteer Hours Over 1000 hrs was donated to the LIRC this year. This is equivalent to one full-time staff member for six months! Way to go RCHK!!

Final reflections YEAR IN REVIEW 1. ACHIEVEMENTS 2. TEACHING & LEARNING 3. EVENTS 4. VOLUNTEERS 5. STATISTICS 6. COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT 7. PLANS FOR 2011-12

As we close this school year we feel exhausted but satisfied. It’s important to reflect on all we have achieved, consider what we could do better and set new goals for the coming year. We are extremely happy to be adding an additional Teacher Librarian in 2011-2012. Mrs Norman will join us as MYP TL. Ms Shirley Chan will take leave to add to her existing qualifications and will be replaced by Ms Lee temporarily. Ms Walker will focus on DP student needs while overseeing all operations of the LIRC. Increased staffing will allow us to support more expertly and strategically the information needs and skills of our students. In 2011-12 we are already developing plans for renovation to the secondary

library. This will include improved layout, new circulation counter and furniture. In August, Kevin Hennah a Library consultant will advise us on future plans for the Primary Library as well. We farewell Mrs Hansen who leaves us to take up a new post as Librarian at Shatin College. We welcome Ms Isabel Ho as her replacement. Isabel brings much knowledge and enthusiasm to the role of secondary library assistant.
