THE 2013 BOOK WEEK THEME WAS CHAMPIONS READ

P. 10 - ? : Statistics

Ms Chan was inspired by a book titled Millie's Marvellous Hat by Satoshi Kitamura, Together with with years 1-3 she made Champion Hats. Years 1-3 then showed off their marvellous hats at the culminating Reading Wave activity. Years 4 & 5 designed their own Champion Reader avatars and Year 6’s created book trailers of their favourite picture books. Years 1 and 2 then brought their IPads to the library and scanned QR codes to view the book trailers. The trailer books became very popular! Other Book Week activities included Book Quiz competitions, Author visits and Read Across the College where secondary students were paired with primary students to read together. The culminating activity saw the whole primary school out on the basketball court, dancing to “Gotta Keep Reading”. Year 12 students, organized by Jacklyn Chan, choreographed and led the wave.

Author Visits Sarah Brennan visited on 11th April 2013 to read her latest book "The tale of Sybil Snake". Yr 2-6 participated in 4 sessions. Sarah also met with one of the Year 2 classes and performed a little drama with the students.

Susan Eaddy, a clay artist and illustrator visited on 15th April 2013. She also conducted a mini clay art workshop with our Year 1 students in studio time which was a direct connection with their Unit of Inquiry.

Ronny Mintjens, author of More Than Just a Game, shared his love of professional sports and exotic cultures by presenting his experiences playing and coaching professional football in Africa during a March visit to RCHK.

An Author for Young adults, Michael Pryor spoke to Years 9 & 10 about his FG84@CHA> 94AG4FL 4A7 F6<8A68 R6G<BA series which are popular in Australia. The steampunk genre mixes historical setting with magic for something new.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS 12 students in Year 5 & 6 participated in the Battle of the Books competition this year. In May, the team travelled to Kellett School and competed against Kellett School, International School Foundation and Kennedy School in G;8 F8@<TRA4? Although we did not win, every member enjoyed the experience, engaged in reading and

worked as a team.

Secondary Library Space

Thanks to advice from @Kevinnah_Hennah (Library consultant), we lowered the height of Library shelves and added full-length slatwall to Bayends for increased Display area. Signage was added to the external door and windows to highlight the Secondary Library presence from outside. As a backdrop to the circulation counter we hung a print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa, taken from the woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. To complement the look we added two large photographs of a Hong Kong Banyan Tree, taken by Yr 12 student, Tia Guttensohn to the Library columns. Tables and chairs were updated with new ergonomically designed chairs that move with the user and provide a pressure free C?4G9BE@ 4F J8?? 4F S8K<5?8 G45?8 F<M8F 9BE creating large or small group spaces.

EasyBib

The LIRC introduced this new information literacy tool to support students in becoming more effective and organized researchers. With EasyBib students can take notes, create intext citations, build a bibliography and much more.

Year 10 classes began the

year with orientation, learning what the library has to offer, returned every few weeks to exchange books and also researched the Russian Revolution while reading Animal Farm. Â

Yr 11 classes accessed the Library during English classes when they could. Due to the curriculum demands of the MYP access was irregular. They used Goodreads to keep an online reading log and monitor current and future reads.

Yr 12 students received an introduction to the Extended Essay, learning how to access databases and citation tools such as EasyBib. The new online resources page was promoted at every opportunity. Many teachers used the Turnitin antiplagiarism tool to monitor and teach students how to avoid plagiarism. The EasyBib note taking tool was also promoted to assist students in managing research, note taking and outlining of assignments.

Parent Volunteers, Library Monitors, Community & Service

Community and service is an integral part of student’s and parent’s lives at RCHK. Students develop greater awareness and concern for the needs of their community while developing new and worthwhile skills. The library monitor programme was extended to Year 4 this year as requested by students. There were over 50 library monitors from Year 4 to 6 who frequently helped out in the library. They contributed 300 service hours. 31 students J8E8 4J4E787 G;8 8EG<R64G8 B9 K68??8AG Service. In addition, 26 Yr 10 & 11 students contributed over 200  hours of service in the Library. From processing books, to the creation of movies and book trailers to be run on the LCD

LCD screens, Yr 10 & 11 contributed in many ways. Parent volunteers also contributed 150 hours in the library. This is a phenomenal effort and we really appreciate and value the volunteer hours that contribute to making our Library one of the best in Hong Kong.

Circulation - who is borrowing? The results below show individual loans, including renewals. Yr 1 has the lowest number as they can only borrow 2 books per visit. Yr 3 has the highest loan number with a loan limit of 3 per visit. From yr 4-6 students can borrow 4 books.

Secondary loans include English texts, literature circle titles and personal loans. There is a dramatic drop in borrowing from Yr 9 - 13. Perhaps as the demands of the IB curriculum <A6E84F8 FGH78AGF 7B ABG RA7 4F @H6; G<@8 GB E847 9BE C?84FHE8 #G <F ABG87 G;4G 6?4FF8F <A Yrs 7 & 8 who are bought to the Library by their English teachers to participate in Literature Circles, have much higher borrowing levels. This is something to be improved on next year, can we extend loan numbers for Yr 9?

It’s been a super year with so

made student and staff access to resources even more easily accessible. We have carefully considered the redevelopment of the secondary library space to better meet the needs of our expanding school population. Red Door will be relocating to their own purpose built space by Christmas 2013. As the Library has been allocated their vacated space, planning has begun on how best to provide for Diploma and MYP students. We are looking forward to putting these plans into action next year. Furniture will need to

book resource collections and this will be an ongoing focus for development in the future.

We farewell Mrs Heather Norman who heads back to the US with her family and to another Library position. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Dianne McKenzie current Head of Library at Discovery College. Dianne brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise and we are excited at the prospect of her joining our dynamic team.
