Once again, we are pleased to recognize, and express gratitude for, the continued support of the church library, by Presbyterian Women. Each year, this wonderful organization donates money for book purchases, honoring the women in our church who passed away during the previous year. So these books are not only significant additions to the library’s collection, but also memorials to Christian lives well lived. Here are this year’s new books:

Women In Christian Traditions, by Rebecca Moore, Professor of Religious Studies at San Diego State University – “Women in Christian Traditions offers a concise and accessible examination of the roles women have played in the construction and practice of Christian traditions, revealing the enormous debt that this major world religion owes to its female followers. It recovers forgotten and obscured moments in church history to help us to realize a richer and fuller understanding of Christianity.” – Amazon.com Simpler Living, Compassionate Life: A Christian Perspective, a collection of essays by writers like Henri Nouwen, Richard Foster, Cecile Andrews, Wendell Berry, Frederick Buechner, and seventeen others – “In a society where ‘I shop, therefore I am’ results in deep spiritual poverty, Simpler Living, Compassionate Life provides a gospel-based antidote.” – Jim Wallis, Editor-in-Chief, Sojourners A Short World History of Christianity, by Robert Bruce Mullin, Society for the Promotion of Religion and Learning Professor of History and World Mission – “A Short World History of Christianity…offers a panoramic picture of the history of Christianity in its Western and non-Western expressions. It tells the story of the early church in the Greek East as well as the Latin West; of Christianity's spread into Asia as well as Europe during the Middle Ages; and its explosion around the world during the modern period.” – Amazon.com Two volumes of The Bible from Scratch – The Old Testament for Beginners and The New Testament for Beginners, both by Donald L. Griggs, noted Christian educator and former professor of Christian Education at PSCE. These are excellent resources for anyone taking on the challenge of reading through the Bible, or simply wanting a clear overview of it.
