T O B E H O N E S T, I am at a bit of a loss for words at the moment. The first half of 2020 was a time unlike anything any of us had ever experienced. Instead of the anticipated stretching and welcoming of the sun that we all do in the chilly Maine spring, we found ourselves locked in our homes and the Maine wedding industry shuttered indefinitely. We here at Real Maine Weddings sincerely hope that you are surviving this strange time and would love to hear from you. If there is anything, we can do to support you in your recovery, please let us know. Real Maine Weddings is a lot of things. It is, of course, a magazine. It is also a website with thousands of visitors a month who use it as a resource as they are planning and researching the Maine wedding universe. It is also a community of businesses and individuals who work every day of their lives to create beautiful wedding experiences for Mainers and our friends from all over the United States and the world. At its core, it is owned by a group of 4 individuals including 2 women and 2 gay men, one of whom is Latino. We are intimately aware of how the system is tipped to favor some people over others. Because of this, we spend a great deal of time working to make changes in our own small ways in our personal lives and in our businesses. With Real Maine Weddings in mind, we work hard to represent BIPOC and their businesses in our featured photos, in our photoshoots, and on our covers. We are committed to representing diversity in Maine’s wedding industry and we strive to get better with each issue. #postponedontcancel In early June of 2020, more than 30 members of the Maine Wedding community answered a call to come together and show solidarity for their beloved industry, recently devastated by the COVID 19 pandemic. Event businesses in Maine have been closed since March, with little indication from the politicians on when Maine might be back open for our kind of business. We are encouraging our clients and to postpone (not cancel) their 2020 events and encouraging each other to look forward to a busy and productive 2021 wedding season. I find that brides like these because they are a just a tad more formal version of who they are. Sometimes looking too different is not comfortable. Some fun accessories that I have not seen a lot of will be tulle turbans for brides looking for a vintage look. We will see some bows and scarfs will also be a fun look. Incorporated into a simple hair style could really be a statement. Trends aside, I believe that you should wear your hair in a way that best accentuates your dress and neckline, and in a way that you feel most beautiful. In another nod to the importance of family for the couple, the ceremony was officiated by the bride’s uncle, Craig Lowe. Close family sat near the couple for the vows, while other guests were seated further uphill near the home. Framing the couple as they exchanged vows were two large antique vases filled with eucalyptus, flowers, and sprays of white pampas grass. The reception took place under a tent provided by Wallace Events behind the bride’s familial home, and had a communal warmth, with guests seated at long rows of farm tables as opposed to separate smaller groupings. The tables were adorned with gauzy runners and laden with greenery, an abundance of silver dollar eucalyptus with flowers in coordinating shades of pink. As a special touch, the flowing runner for the head table was embroidered with flowers in shades of pink. The warm wood of the tables and chairs the plates atop a beaded glass charger. The place settings were accented with a dusty rose napkin that coordinated with the dresses of the bride’s sister and sister-in-law. The couple put another whimsical and

The bride’s hairdresser, Julie Dupuis, arrived early to aid the bridal party in preparations, but Allyson says it wasn’t until the flowers arrived that it began to feel like their wedding day. “The flowers were something out of a dream,” Allyson says of the arrangements. “Seeing all of the bridesmaids and my mom get pieces of greenery or little white roses to put in their hair started to complete this image I’d had in my head since the very beginning.” The bride rode to the ceremony with her grandparents and younger sister, who served as her junior bridesmaid, while her bridesmaids and maid of honor drove over together. The bridal party waited in the guesthouse at the Dockside as the guests arrived and were seated. When it was time for the ceremony to begin, the group slowly walked down the aisle to “Fare Thee Well,” from the film Inside Llewyn Davis (one of Allyson’s favorite films) and the bride walked down the aisle with her father to “All My Days” by Alexi Murdoch. I N A L LY S O N ’ S W O R D S I’m so glad that... it was such a family and friends affair. Our “guest book” which is a wooden tabletop with our initials burnt into it was built by my dad. My mom put together favors. My sister/maid of honor and one of my bridesmaids worked on setting up the seating chart. It felt like a collaborative process and one where Quinn and I were able to fully reap the benefits of the day because it was built on the work and love of the people we hold closest to us. One of my favorite moments was... our vows. For people who aren’t exactly those who choose the spotlight, our vows were daunting because we aren’t keen on such open sentimentality and we brought as much humor to them as we were able. However, the day was perfect. Following a week of rain, we got the one beautiful day — the skies were clear, and we were right on York Harbor — and made this private moment (even though in front of a crowd) all the more special. I didn’t realize... how crucial the flow would be. Thank goodness for those in my life who did, and handled things as Quinn and I bopped around. I wish... there is nothing I would have changed. Maybe I would have seated some people differently or closer to the stage, but seating is impossible. More than anything and more than we already had, I just wish I had been able to give more time to everyone who came. I really liked...that we got photos at the end of the day. We looked maybe a little more disheveled and a touch worse for the wear than we did at the start of the day, but the happiness on our faces is apparent. My advice to other brides is... trust your vendors. It seems like such an obvious idea but so many of us are reliant on sources such as Pinterest when in reality, it’s difficult to replicate those images in real life. Our DJ and florist, our officiant and the sales associate I worked with in finding my dress were instrumental because they could read between the lines of what I was trying to convey and worked with me. Have an open mind and don’t put too much pressure on yourself — it’s a day to celebrate and if you worry too much the day will be over even quicker than it already is. 92 | WWW.REALMAINEWEDDINGS.COM

stumbled on the Schooner Ladona and fell in love with the ship, the history of the boat (it served as a submarine patrol in WWII), its aesthetic with natural wood and all white accents, and the layout with ample seating and standing for 45 people. We actually booked the wedding sight-unseen — we had never been to Rockland or seen the boat. We later made visits to check out the town and the boat and coordinate arrangements and realized just how awesome a ‘venue’ and area we had chosen.” In addition, they fell in love with the people that they met. “We were also blown away by the kindness of everyone we met in Rockland,” says Nathan. This choice also reflected a bit of compromise for Nathan and Cori. “We were limited to having no more than 45 guests, which led to a smaller and more intimate wedding than we had planned, but it ended up being perfect. I had envisioned a large wedding and Cori wanted to elope; this size felt like a perfect compromise.” Reflecting on the planning process, Nathan remembers the challenges that he and Cori faced with their unique choice. “Planning a wedding from many states away was certainly unique. We would tell anyone doing the same to be aware that it can take more time to coordinate everything than if you are having your wedding at a venue you can visit, for example. Having patience and organization are crucial to staying sane while you’re waiting to find out info about your exciting day.” Another unusual aspect of their planning came with working around the schedule of the boat itself. “We also had the added challenge of coordinating with a ship and crew that are extremely busy or out at sea,” says Nathan. “Jane Barnes (co-owner and coordinator of the Schooner Ladona) was amazing with answering all of our questions, nailing down our details and recommending how to make ever ything smooth sailing (pun intended).” Letting the schooner set the tone and theme for the wedding. IN CORI’S WORDS I’m so glad that... we decided to keep the wedding small and intimate. I think it helped the guests to feel more relaxed and really enjoy themselves. I felt I was able to connect on a deeper level with my guests, while also enjoying my time celebrating with my new husband! One of my favorite moments was... walking down the “aisle” (dock) to our favorite David Bowie song and then seeing everyone on the boat for the first time. I didn’t realize... how much the elements of an outside wedding can affect your makeup and hair for photos. Even though I chose an up-do hairstyle, it was no match for the wind once we set sail. I am easy going and didn’t think twice about it until I saw some of the photos. I still love how they turned out, but it is something other brides will want to consider if choosing an outdoor ceremony/ reception. I wish... I could go back and do it all over again!!! Even though it was an all-day event, the time flew by. I really liked... that my husband supported my alternative ideas for our wedding. Being able to control and tweak the details to fit our personalities made it the most amazing day of our lives. My advice to other brides is... at the end of the day, the wedding is about celebrating your love. Don’t get too hung up on the details. I promise you no one will notice the small mishaps or unplanned mistakes. Most importantly, have fun! It should be a joyous day spent surrounded by the people you love. Take your shoes off, indulge in that dinner you planned, dance all night, and try to remember every moment, because it goes by fast!

After dinner, the cake was cut, and speeches were given by Nathan’s brother, Adam, and Cori’s best friend, Helen.
