HUSTLE TO FLORIDA FOR THIS SUMMER’S 2023 JRA ROUND-UP

Make plans to join us for the 2023 JRA Round-Up to be held July 10-15 in central Florida. Members will experience local agriculture, participate in team-building exercises and explore the white sands of a Florida beach!

Save the dates of July 10-15 and start making plans! The five days in central Florida will be jam-packed with both education and fun! Site visits will highlight the key commodities of the region’s agriculture as well as industry partners that assist in advancing agriculture. You’ll visit one of the largest commercial cattle operations in the United States, see citrus orchards and packing houses, visit an award-winning dairy operation, tour the oldest family-owned premium cigar

maker factory in America, explore the university lab for tropical aquaculture and spend some time exploring the beach!

Team challenges and individual contests will showcase participants’ knowledge of cattle production and evaluation. The JRA annual meeting provides an opportunity to guide continuous improvement for the organization and elect the 2023-2024 board of directors. And, the entire experience is a chance to create friendships and memories of a lifetime.

FROM 2022 ATTENDEES ...

“Kids should attend JRA Round-Up because they will get the opportunity to learn things not only about the cattle industry, but also the ag industry in general in parts of the country that they’ve never been to. It’s learning things that you want to learn and seeing things that you never thought to look for.”

— Jenna Cox, Washington

“I decided to attend Round-Up because I had heard about it while attending the Young Stockman Program. I had wanted to attend for a while and finally was able. I was so happy I did. I would definitely recommend juniors to attend. The friends you meet, the memories you will take home and all the things you will learn during this week will be with you forever!”

— Gracie Rogers, Missouri

“Kids should attend Round-Up because it’s such an amazing opportunity to travel and see things you don’t normally see within your local agriculture. You also get to meet new people and share new experiences that you will remember for a lifetime.”

— Mackenzie Forbes, Washington

“Round-Up has been really impactful in the relationships I’ve made, choosing my future career and how to be a leader in the agriculture industry. Juniors should attend Round-Up because they will make friends that will last a lifetime. What you will learn and the people you will meet at Round-Up is invaluable.”

—Taryn Cox, Washington

“All JRA members should attend Round-Up at least once! You get the opportunity to connect with other junior members from around the country and create friendships over your love for red cows!”

JUNIOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATIONAL AND TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS

This time of year, we hear a lot about college scholarships. But in the Junior Red Angus Association, you don’t have to wait until you graduate to be rewarded. Take advantage of the following scholarship opportunities to get involved and develop the skills you need to excel!

BEEF INDUSTRY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship provides financial support for members to participate in industry activities or events that will help toward the member’s success in the industry. Applications for this scholarship are accepted each quarter for review and can reach up to $200 toward the event. Scholarship recipients are required to promote the Red Angus breed, when appropriate, and submit an article for publication that includes several pictures and quotes that review the experience within 15 days following the event.

HEATHER PRESSER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

There are a few travel scholarships open to all juniors who wish to travel for national events. The Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship, worth $500, is offered to assist with the cost of the Young Stockman Program and JRA Round-Up. This scholarship is in loving memory of

Troy and Annette Presser’s daughter, Heather, who was tragically taken from her family in an ATV accident in 2012. This scholarship allows Heather’s memory to live on in the Red Angus industry. Any member wishing to apply for this scholarship must complete and submit the application by the respective event’s registration deadline.

JRA ROUND-UP SCHOLARSHIPS

The association has two $200 scholarships for any JRA member to apply toward their JRA Round-Up participation. Completed applications are due May 1.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM

Looking for a way to connect with other juniors? Or to get resources for your herd, prepare for a contest or create a school project?

The Junior Red Angus Association has developed a Google Classroom specifically for juniors. This is an avenue for you to access informational material, JRA event information, Red Angus Association of America webinars and to stay updated on JRA news.

For example, if you want to learn more about JRA Round-Up, you can go into the Google Classroom and open the JRA REDtalk class. Then open the “Classwork” tab to find the “Junior Red Angus Events” section, scroll down and find the announcement titled “JRA Round-Up | July 10-15.” In this topic, you will find the link to the Round-Up website which includes information such as packing lists, the schedule, contest materials and announcements.

Or, maybe you need some resources to develop a speech on bull selection. Explore the “Red Angus Knowledge” section under the “Classwork” tab. Under this section, subjects such as “Understanding EPDs” and “CowCalf Production” can be found. These materials can be valuable information when constructing a speech about producing the next generation of calves. Under the “Downloadable Images” section, you can also find stock Red Angus photos to polish off your presentation.

Speaking of presentations, the Google Classroom also has a section with tips on how to create and give a presentation or speech. This section is called “Presentation/Workshop Resources.”

No matter whether you want to learn more about the Red Angus breed, write a speech or learn about JRA events, the Google Classroom is a great resource for you to use. B&B

YOUNG STOCKMAN PROGRAM EXPLORES DIRECTTO-CONSUMER MARKETING

The 2022 Young Stockman Program in Clarion, Iowa, brought together juniors with a love for both learning and cattle. Our short time together brought many laughs, educational opportunities and fellowship with other kids. Juniors got firsthand experience with multiple local producers who grow their own beef to sell directly to consumers, plus opportunities to develop and practice their advocacy skills. All in all, our site visits and presenters left the juniors with this important lesson: tell your story.

Knute and Amanda Severson shared their experiences in owning and operating Grandview Beef. Grandview is a grass-fed beef operation that sells their product directly to consumers through an online business, local pick-up and at farmer’s markets.

Knute and Amanda’s journey wasn’t easy. When they decided to market beef, they chose grain-finished because that was Knute’s background. As they ventured into the farmer’s market scene, they were continually faced with consumers wanting grass-fed. So, they did some research, pivoted and approached a steep learning curve to produce grass-fed beef of which they could be proud. They emphasized the importance of finding resources and people who you can depend upon to learn about the business. Amanda shared that instead of selling their products, they sell their story. They let consumers know the good, bad and the ugly of everything.

Shaye Koester, Casual Cattle

Conversations, kicked off the weekend with a memorable presentation on the importance of advocating for our industry. Allowing participants to engage in several activities, Shaye challenged us to think about how cattle help improve the environment, help us maintain a healthy diet, their importance in upcycling and so much more. Throughout the program, Shaye provided opportunities to build advocacy skills and then challenged the participants to practice them.

Natives of South Africa, Elmarie and Manie Nel moved to the United States to have access to more opportunities. Coming from a different country is hard, but the couple persevered and started their own, successful business — the Clarion Locker. So much hard work and dedication goes into meat processing and the Nel family clearly showed they truly love what they do through their commitment to their business and employees. They have the entrepreneurial spirit which enables them to continually grow their business. Recently, they launched a line of pet food and treats. Like the Severson family, Ashley Recknor, Purple Ribbon Beef, sells

directly to consumers through online sales, farmer’s markets and even a vending machine! Ashley told us the story of Purple Ribbon Beef and allowed the juniors to see their old storefront while practicing with some marketing tactics. Participants created holiday gift baskets, packed meat bundles for shipping and created photos for social media posts.

Purple Ribbon Beef’s story shows juniors that teamwork truly makes the dreamwork and to always remember that your family will have your back.

Juniors, whether you joined us in November or not, always remember that every story is vital to the beef industry. Like all our speakers, take pride in your work, share it with the rest of the world, do what you love and make sure to enjoy the ride.

Thank you all for a successful Young Stockman Program, and we hope to see you at the next Young Stockman Program in Lincoln, Nebraska, Nov. 18-19! B&B
