LAURA VEIRS JULY FLAME Laura Veirs’ seventh album July Flame, which Colin Meloy of The Decemberists calls “the best album of 2010,” explores the emotion of mid-summer. Drenched in wood smoke, sunlight, pollinators, pastoral dales, fireworks and warm nights, her lyrics explore the dichotomy between one’s desire for permanence and security and the realization that such things rarely exist. Nowhere on the album is this inherent tension more crystallized than on the title track.
STREET DATE: 1/12/2010
Composed mostly in the barn behind her house in Portland, Ore., July Flame is a relatively stripped-down folk record highlighting Veirs’ masterful finger picking guitar and confident vocals. “Laura’s like the queen bee and my ear is her hive; she nests and makes honey in the hairs of my cochlea,” says Jim James of My Morning Jacket (who sings on several tracks). The album breaks from Veirs’ previous full-band efforts, although many of the same players make appearances on the album, including longtime collaborators Karl Blau and Steve Moore. String arrangements are featured more on this album than on others; the brilliant improviser Eyvind Kang plays viola on many songs, and legendary arranger Stephen Barber composed hauntingly beautiful string quartet arrangements for three songs. July Flame is the sixth album (and third released on her own label Raven Marching Band) that Laura and producer Tucker Martine (Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, Laura Gibson) have made together. Recorded and mixed at their home, the songwriting, arrangements, production and performances create a fully realized piece of art that inspires reflection and calm in a world that spins unsteady. Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on “The Music Scene” he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from “one basic beat and building off it” (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, “I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before.” Blockheadʼs ambition to “tell stories without words” is evident from opener “Itʼs Raining Clouds” onwards. The tune starts off as classic downtempo and ends up almost drum and bass, the music having changed and fallen away, echoing back through itself and feeding into previous themes at least three times. Itʼs an epic in an album of epics. At the heart of the record is the remarkable “The Daily Routine” – an exploration of drug addiction (based around a found recording of drug addicts arguing), Blockhead says “itʼs pretty much the creepiest song Iʼve ever made.” “Four Walls,” meanwhile aims a musical broadside at the current vogue for autotune. “Which One Of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer” is huge ambient space rock hip hop. “The Prettiest Seaslug” is Bahia-beat on opium. “Tricky Turtle” begins as afro-blaxpoitation, turns into a voodoo orgy and ends somewherte in the Middle East. “Farewell Spaceman” starts off sounding like an outtake from “Bewitched” and ends as an ecstatic, chugging flight off into the stars.

On July 22, 2008, James "T Model" Ford stepped into Planet Paul Studios in Wichita, KS at the end of his first formal tour in years. Rumors of his demise had been laid to rest after two weeks of T Model's performing his raw, rough, & tumble blues. T wanted to play acoustic guitar and have 100% control over the record, so everyone agreed he should do it the way he wanted. The engineer simply let the tapes roll & T Model made it look easy. One song after another just rolled out of him. "The Ladies Man" is the product of this afternoon session in Wichita. This is pure T Model, with some newer young musician friends playing along with him. It is also the only acoustic album T has ever recorded and it's a blast. "I don't have a care in the world," T Model would remark occasionally. He'd back it up by taking time in the studio to sip Jack Daniels from his flask and tell "blue" stories or tales of his life's hardships to his new set of listeners. At 88 years old, he appeared younger and livelier than many folks a fraction of his age and this amazing record is the proof. Track listing: 1.Chicken Head Man 2.Two Trains 3.I'm Coming To Kick Yer Asses 4.I Love You Baby 5 .44 Blues 6.Sallie Mae 7.My Babe 8.I Was Born In A Swamp 9.That's Alright 10.Love Me All Night Long 11.Hip Shaking Woman (CD only)

LIVE AT THE COVINGTON MASONIC LODGE, COVINGTON KYA Recorded live on a hot-ass night of July the 24th 2009 at Dr. Johnny Walker's (SOLEDAD BROTHERS / CUT IN THE HILL GANG) flat in Covington, Kentucky, this is the BLACK DIAMOND HEAVIES absolutely live and kicking out the jam Southern style. The album is a LIMITED PRESSING of 1000 copies on both CD and LP - the vinyl is BLUE VINYL. “When they hammer away at max. tempo, they sound like The Stooges, with the Ashton brothers replaced by a really really loud Fender Rhodes piano. When they slow it down and groove, they sound like a broken down Booker T & The MGs / the theme from 'Taxi' being run-over by a taxi. They are, in parts, genuinely funky, and as jazz as a rock concert gets these days. BIOGRAPHY : Brooke Fraser is a verifiable superstar in Australia, New Zealand and, more recently, the U.S. Originally released in Australia and New Zealand in 2004 (and the precursor to the 2008 U.S. release of her second blockbuster solo effort entitled “Albertine” which yielded a Top 5 hit at Christian Radio with the single “Shadowfeet”), “What To Do With Daylight” was the initial impetus for Brooke’s burgeoning career and eventual worldwide success. Music lovers in the States often identify her as a member of the modern worship outfit Hillsong United, as she has penned some of their most beloved hymns including “Hosanna,” “Lead Me To The Cross” and “Lord of Lords.” In anticipation of a brand-new solo album tentatively slated for the Summer of 2010, “What To Do With Daylight” is being released in the U.S. to reinforce the successes Brooke has experienced over the course of the last couple years. To date, the album has only been available as an import and, more recently, digitally. With the public demand at a high level for all things Brooke Fraser, this is a great catalog item which will prove to be an evergreen seller over the course of time.

PETER HAMMILL - This (Remastered)
FORMAT - CD LABEL - FIE Records UPC - 5023522911826 CATALOG # - FIE9118CD LIST PRICE - $15.99 A last hurrah for the quartet came on “This” in 1998, though the contributions here were rather more individual than as a collective unit. One of Peter‟s most wide-ranging releases, this runs the gamut from an extended ambient piece, “The Light Continent”, to some very direct near-pop songs. Now been remastered, in a polishing the silver, rather than maxing out the level, fashion.
PETER HAMMILL - X My Heart (Re Mastered)
FORMAT - CD LABEL - FIE Records UPC - 5023522911123 CATALOG # - FIE9111CD LIST PRICE - $15.99 The pHQ undertook a number of tours after “Roaring Forties” and so it was natural that the (occasional) group was on Peter‟s mind when time came to record the next studio album. This was “X my heart”. It might have been a blueprint for future work with the lineup, but in the event there were to be no more more live shows for this set-up. Now been remastered, in a polishing the silver, rather than maxing out the level, fashion.

The sequence began with “Roaring Forties”, a set which included not only a long-form piece, “A Headlong Stretch” , which recalled much of Peter‟s earlier work in breadth, ambition and complexity. Now been remastered, in a polishing the silver, rather than maxing out the level, fashion.

NEW RELEASES FOR 12th JANUARY 2010
IKONIKA— Sahara Michael / Fish
FORMAT - 12” LABEL - Hyperdub UPC - 5055300310934 CATALOG # - HDB029 LIST PRICE - $11.99 Hyperdub‟s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her de-but album due early in 2010. „Sahara Michael‟ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, reveal-ing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrast-ing polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side „Fish‟ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody.
AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE - Songs Of Praise
FORMAT - CD LABEL - On-U Sound UPC - 8015948090282 CATALOG # - ONUCD9013 LIST PRICE - $15.99 Led by percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, African Head Charge formed in the early 80s and, under a shifting lineup, have released seven albums of afrocentric dub psychedelia, most of which have been produced by Adrian Sherwood and released on his On-U Sound label. As a precursor to the imminent release of their long-awaited new album „Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa‟, AHC and On-U present a new reissue of „Songs Of Praise‟, which was originally released in 1991 and has been out of print for the better part of five years. As with a bulk of Exclusive Blend 1, many of these tracks were receiving their first commercial airing on this album‟s release. Released in 1997, the album also introduced James Clarke‟s Wild Elephants to the world, which was subsequently picked up by Gap and used on the 1999 „Khaki A Go-Go‟ worldwide campaign. As a thankyou from the writer it was re-titled „Blow Up A-Go-Go‟ and became the title track for the successful V2 / Blow Up compilation „Blow Up A-Go-Go!
