Grimes started producing music when she had to learn the program Logic for her neuroscience class. Shortly thereafter she had a viral myspace page, which allowed her to start booking shows and focus full-time on music. She lived in a crack den in Montreal with no heat (where she got frostbite twice and her neighbor was bludgeoned to death in the hallway), playing raves until her 2012 breakout, Visions, which was recorded during a 2 week speed binge wherein she did not leave her bedroom. Upon the success of this album, Grimes attempted to enter society as a regular human, which has clearly not gone super well but has nonetheless been entertaining. She’s since become an award winning music video director as well as a music writer, producer, engineer, singer-songwriter. She’s toured globally to sold out crowds, headlined festivals, and is now moving into the space of corporate surrealism. She recently had experimental eye surgery only available to the upper class. She is putting out her final earth album February 21st 2020.

On October 22nd Courtney Barnett performed a unique and special show at the invitation of MTV in her hometown of Melbourne. The “Unplugged” performance features Barnett as you’ve never heard her before, warm, vulnerable and emotional. Under a garland of lights and a canopy of florals in the outdoor courtyard of Howler, Barnett performed a stirring set of eight songs to an intimate audience including “Depreston”, “Avant Gardener” and “Sunday Roast”. Joined by her usual band Dave Mudie and Bones Sloane, she also enlisted cellist Lucy Waldron. Barnett made the night even more iconic by inviting some of her favorite musicians to collaborate including legendary songwriter Paul Kelly, angelically-voiced New Zealander Marlon Williams and Milk! Records label-mate Evelyn Ida Morris. The performances included covers of Leonard Cohen, Archie Roach and Seeker Lover Keeper as well as a never-before-heard original track from Courtney herself titled “Play It On Repeat”.

“He is the kind of storyteller who knows what makes a memorable story: a blend of the everyday and the unexpected, relatable situations told with perfect timing.” - The New Yorker Like any great artist on the rise, Archy Marshall’s life is moving fast. There’s a lot to catch up on, after 2017’s sprawling masterpiece, The OOZ, broke through amid Mercury Prize nominations and mind-blowing media plaudits. Unlike that record, Man Alive! doesn’t aim to present any kind of narrative thread, or Brexit-era stateof-the-nation address, just a collection of snapshots and stories, artfully sequenced into a dazzlingly coherent whole. Also from Six Organs of Admittance School of the Flower LP DC282

Six Organs of Admittance is back after 3 years with a new record, new techniques in sound generation, and a new attitude. Companion Rises has a driving force only hinted at with previous releases. Manipulating the rhythmic DNA from songs such as the bass-dominated “Taken by Ascent” (on his last record, Burning the Threshold), Ben Chasny has grown a new sound creature in his lab that is as welcoming as it is terrifying and as fun to listen to as it provocative and intriguing. Methodologically, Companion Rises sometimes recalls the early-mid low-fi work of Six Organs, with modern techniques swapping digital processes in for the analog ways of the early days, and algorithmic programs creating the rhythms rather than Ben’s overdubbed hand percussion. Also like those early records, Companion Rises has Ben creating all the sounds, doing all the recording and mixing the entire record himself. But do not mistake this as some sort of return to an older sound. One listen and it is obvious that this Six Organs of Admittance release is all in the present. One thinks of Octavio Paz’s oft-used metaphor of the concentric circle, as Companion Rises returns to a similar place but is much farther out from the center. Sonically, Ben’s songs are bursting with ideas, harmonically rich, gorgeously arranged; often presenting two versions at once, overlaying electric and acoustic treatments that interlock like two shards that form a single key. Companion Rises plays like a mutant joining of avant and good-time forces, as if Faust produced The Revolution instead of Prince, or This Heat recorded on top of Amon DüüI’s classic “Paramechanical World,” but left a few of the original tracks to bleed through. Waves of electric fields wash across the record like a charged Pacific Ocean and guitar solos slice through at various intervals in a warped and fractured way of shreddage, not totally unlike the imagined sound of Eddie Hazel jacking into the CPU in Tron. Thematically, many songs on Companion Rises seem to navigate a similar Stellar-Gnosticism that 2012’s Ascent explored, but with a completely different set of stories. Whereas Ascent was locked into a narrative concerning a sentient Jupiter, Companion Rises presents a handful of folk-tales whose topics span in scope from panspermia to specific constellations, all written in a way that eschews new age presentation tropes and embraces the now. With Companion Rises, Ben has created a Sci-Folk record that feels totally in the right place welcoming in the new decade.

Lonely For You Baby

SOUTHERN SOUL SIZZLERS FROM NASHVILLE! Some serious swagger emerged on Shelby S. Singleton’s SSS International label, including the funk-soaked, Allen Toussaint-penned “There’s A Break In The Road,” Mickey Murray’s relentless “Sticky Sue,” Bettye LaVette’s standout revival of “Piece Of My Heart,” and more sensational workouts! Cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on gold vinyl at Third Man Pressing! Inaugurated in 1967, the Nashville-based SSS International label’s wide-ranging catalog encompassed pop, country and rock, as well as a particularly strong soul roster, releasing a slew of terrific platters through the early ‘70s. In addition to producing hits for his Nashville-based label, Singleton also had an uncanny knack for picking up other splendid masters—Betty Harris and Robert Parker were produced in New Orleans, while Mickey Murray, Sam Dees, and Clifford Curry contributed stunning sides to the fertile catalog from other soul capitals. Activity at SSS International wound down after the new decade commenced, but we can certainly be glad he devoted so much quality time to this slamming southern soul.

• Calfione’s first new album in 7 years • LTD Indie Exclusive Cream Vinyl • Original Line-up w/ Ben Masserella & Brian Deck On February 21st, 2020 Jealous Butcher Records will be releasing Califone’s first new album since 2013’s Stitches (Dead Oceans). The album is Echo Mine and it also happens to be the score to a dance performance of the same name created by Robyn Mineko Williams. Califone’s leader Tim Rutili has this to say about making the album: “The movement and the music started together and grew together, like two clear entities. At times totally intertwined and at other times bouncing off one another, sort of like reflections. But, somehow, always connected and listening.” “Ben Massarella, Brian Deck and I worked in a way that felt like a return to home; Brian handling the engineering, electronics, drums and overall sound of the piece, Ben adding percussion, feel, essential textures and colors. I felt like my job was to hover over all of it like a moth. Find melody in everything. Leave openings for everyone to work at the top of their creativity. We made our album, Roomsound, in much the same way (almost 20 years ago). Three of us in the studio – Be humans. Play together as much as possible. A good feel beats perfection every time. Add other musicians to add other voices and other colors, to do the things we can’t do.” The inaugural performance of the Echo Mine dance will take place on December 7th in Chicago at The Harris Theatre. The dance is itself a collaboration of sorts as it was inspired by and created alongside Chicago dance icon Claire Bataille a founding member of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Robyn tells us more about that process: “The original idea for what we came to refer to as “our secret little project” was to make a solo for Claire to dance, 25 years after she’d last performed on stage. A month after our first rehearsal together, Claire was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She agreed to continue working on our project throughout the last months of her life. Grace and grit personified. It was a most extraordinary gift to spend this time with her. Before she passed, Claire gave me her blessing to continue and make the piece my own.” Tim continues: “Robyn is an abstract painter. I’m not sure how to explain what she does, but we all felt it deeply while creating this music. Watching Robyn and the dancers rehearse, I had a similar feeling to being in front of a Rothko painting. There is a deliberate precision to the dance and movement that pulls the specifics of a story into abstract forms that illuminate the dream logic, the unseen edges and colors that deepen emotions all around what it is to be a human in a physical body – beyond words.” The album Echo Mine will be available for preorder beginning November 19th along with the release of the first song from the album Snow Angel V2. “Snow Angel was written to a rehearsal video of the dancers working through some of Robyn's ideas for Echo Mine - the movement seemed to ask for something familiar & dream-like. There is some irreversible interplanetary destruction going on in this song, right on top of some gauzy memory and deep winter quietude - Add to that a GREASE/TWIN PEAKS version of 1950s style drama and melancholy.” Califone will be heading out on tour in support of Echo Mine this coming spring, with dates to be announced as they become available.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

APALA Apala Groups in Nigeria 1964-69 21st February 2020

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Apala: Apala Groups in Nigeria 1964-69’ is the first ever collection of Apala music ever to be released outside of Nigeria. The album focusses on a wide selection of recordings made in Nigeria in the 1960s, a time when Apala music was at the height of its popularity. Apala is a deeply rhythmical, hypnotic and powerful musical style that combines the striking nasal-style vocals and traditions of Islamic music, the Agidigbo (thumb piano), and the equally powerful drumming and percussion rhythms and techniques of the Yoruba of Nigeria. The most significant figure in Apala music is undoubtedly Haruna Ishola who features throughout this album. Ishola holds an almost mythological status in his role as populariser of Apala music in Nigeria. Ishola’s singing was believed to be so powerful that, without proper restraint, it could kill the recipient of his music. Apala is a popular music that also functioned as a form of cultural resistance – Apala music involved no western instrumentation and is sung in the Yoruba language, its aesthetic an implicit cultural rejection of the British Empire’s colonial rule over Nigeria which lasted from 1901 until independence in 1960. Apala music was popular and widely accepted in Nigeria due to its philosophical and profound lyrical content alongside the complex rhythmic patterns of this heavily percussive style, which highlighted many of the percussion instruments of south-west Nigeria. th

Apala is one of a number of popular urban styles of music that came out of Nigeria in the 20 century and sits alongside the more well-known (in the West) styles of Fuji, Highlife, Juju and Afrobeat. Of these modern forms Apala remains perhaps the most ‘roots’ style (sometimes described as ‘neo-traditional’) due to the authenticity of its sound. It has similar Islamic roots to other neo-traditional styles of Nigeria – including Waka and Sakara – examples of which are also included on this collection contextualising the music of Apala.

These recordings were originally made and released locally by Decca and EMI Records as well as a variety of independent labels in Nigeria and have never been released outside of the country before. Soul Jazz Records are releasing this album as a deluxe double gatefold vinyl (+ download code), CD, slipcase and booklet, both containing full text and photography.

Hyacinth is the second album from Spinning Coin. A brave step forward, Hyacinth is an album full of poetry, light and warmth of heart, and presents a band holding nothing back. It registers a number of changes for the group since their debut LP Permo in 2017: personnel changes, geographical changes, a new context, an ever-changing world outside. Throughout Hyacinth, there is joy in spades, but also melancholy, and a checked fury, threading the group’s political vision through their reflections on the personal and the interpersonal. Made in France at Black Box Studios, Hyacinth is a beautiful patchwork of a record, a group spinning off in various directions, sometimes all at once. It’s experimental, pop, psychedelic, and it’s got so much love and humanity about it.

WILSEN RUINER Street Date: February 21, 2019

With producer Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief, SASAMI) at the helm, WILSEN’s new album RUINER dissolves both the heavy reverb and ethereal moments found on their first recording by instead letting the band’s essentials – drums, bass, guitar, and vocals – have centre stage. In the album’s opening moments, you might hear a knotted wash of guitars and Wilson (Tamsin Wilson – the singer) softly humming, for a very brief moment returning you to their dreamscape but sharply, a driving rock rhythm comes into focus and so too does a revitalized band.

“Making this record was somewhat of a coming of age process,” Wilson explains,“We’re getting older and becoming more deliberate, less precious, less measured. Overthinking less & trusting instincts.” CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

English songsmith Douglas Dare returns with his third and most stripped back studio album to date, Milkteeth, released on 21 February 2020 with Erased Tapes. Produced by Mike Lindsay — founding member of Tunng and one half of LUMP with Laura Marling — in his studio in Margate in just twelve days, Milkteeth sees Douglas become confident and comfortable enough with his own identity to reflect on both the joys and pains of youth. In doing so, he has established himself as a serious 21st century singer-songwriter with an enduring lyrical poise and elegant minimalist sound. Douglas Dare grew up on a farm as the youngest member of a large extended family, where he was often found in his own private world, dancing in his mother’s pink ballet dress. “Only now do I feel free to express my inner child again, and am giving myself permission to play dress up,” says Dare of Milkteeth’s cover shot, in which he wears soft makeup and is draped with layers of white linen, acting the part of a Greek muse. “I never felt like I fit in. I was different, odd. I wanted to dance and sing and dress up and on a small farm in rural Dorset that really stuck out.” Where previously he has been known as a piano player, for Milkteeth Dare picked up a new instrument, the autoharp, and as soon as he sat down with it, songs poured out – he wrote the album’s first single Silly Games, in under an hour. “Instinctual feelings about childhood and innocence were the catalyst,” he explains. “Then with the autoharp, it all just clicked – I could see the album laid out ahead of me.” Milkteeth opens with I Am Free, which loops piano and lyrics in an intimate dance, comparing the seemingly inexorable freedom of childhood to flying. The Playground is a song Dare says he’s wanted to write for years, about a yearning for childhood innocence and simplicity. While Red Arrows tells a story of vulnerability, of craving parental comfort, The Joy In Sarah’s Eyes is a Jeff Buckley-esque ballad for a new generation. In Heavenly Bodies there is an unhurried darkness that nods to Leonard Cohen’s songwriting, and is also the first time Dare has played the guitar on record. The melodies on Milkteeth are deliberately simple; Dare wanted it to feel familiar right from the first listen. In between these songs sit instrumental pieces – The Piano Room, The Stairwell, The Window – named for the spots they were recorded in, moments for stillness and reflection. Marking his arrival in 2014 with the release of his acclaimed debut Whelm and establishing his musical dexterity on the much darker follow up Aforger in 2016, Dare’s star keeps growing. In 2017 he was asked to contribute a re-interpretation of Dance Me to the End of Love to the Leonard Cohen exhibition A Crack in Everything at the Contemporary Art Museum of Montréal, currently showing at The Jewish Museum in New York before opening at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco in September 2020. He was invited by Robert Smith to perform at his Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre in 2018, followed by the David Lynch-curated Manchester International Festival alongside Anna Calvi in 2019. Dare’s music speaks of his own experiences of universal themes like love, loss, and childhood. Perhaps most importantly, his music gives a voice and a sanctuary to anyone who’s ever felt unusual or out of place. Whether he’s singing of the pain of those in the Magdalene Laundries as on Whelm, describing coming out to his parents on Aforger, or processing his own childhood isolation on Milkteeth, Dare has a graceful honesty and an abiding clarity of vision in his simple and distinctive sound.

Banoffee Look At Us Now Dad Out February 21, 2020 on Cascine Banoffee is a Melbourne-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and producer with a transgressive and deeply vulnerable approach to music. She has toured with Taylor Swift on a worldwide stadium tour as part of Charli XCX’s troupe, and represents the new wave of mutant pop bubbling up from the queer club underground. She has been described as one of pop music’s “recent great forward thinkers” (FACT) and is known for infectious melodies that belie more unsettling, experimental textures and beats. Look At Us Now Dad is Banoffee’s debut album, and it is an uplifting, optimistic journey that celebrates survival in the face of abuse and adversity. Bardo Pond ADROP / CIRCUIT VIII LP-TLR-130LE | LP-TLR-130 Street Date: February 21, 2019

Format: Indie Only Silver Vinyl 2xLP (with download) UPC: 711574898015

Where do you start with Bardo Pond? Ever since their first release in 1992, these Philadelphia stalwarts have continually amazed all comers with not only their songcraft and musicianship, but also with their steadfast and singular artistic vision. Close to thirty years and sixty releases later the trip continues unabated, their one true goal of flawless musical unity with the galaxy pressing ever forward. Not only have they outlasted many of their peers – and labels – with this pursuit, but their quest has created hyperdevoted fanbase but also a pool of folks sympathetic to Bardo Pond’s cause but a little intimidated of their deep catalog and unsure of just exactly where they are supposed to start. For these folks on the fringes, Three Lobed Recordings steps forth to definitely answer that central Bardo Pond question: start with Adrop and Circuit VIII. These two multi-movement suites drill down to the exact Bardo essence, each displaying how the band’s longest-running lineup at a sustained creative peak could so easily hit all of the facets of their sound and experimentation in equal measure. That said, these two albums serve not only as starting points but also as reminders to the Bardo faithful of why they have ridden with the band for so long. As Gerard Cosloy points out within his essay contained in this newly remastered double LP release that places the complementary Adrop and Circuit VIII albums alongside one another, “to have ever viewed (Bardo Pond) thru the mere prism of “psychedelic” was myopic-to-the-max…” It is true as that is normally the phrase that is tossed around when it comes to discussing Bardo’s trajectory. Space rock? Hard rock? Art rock? God damned rock and roll? Hard to pin down avant garde experimentation? All of these elements – and psychedelia, naturally – play an essential role in the Bardo experience. The true beauty and where they separate themselves from the other denizens in the kosmiche sandbox is how all of these sounds mesh for them into one impossible to recreate whole. The structure and content of Adrop and Circuit VIII prove and re-prove this thesis in spades. Adrop makes up this release’s first LP and its suite format covers all manners of territory over its thirty-three minute running time. In almost equal measure the listener is enveloped in a droney opening movement whose hazy, guaze-y atmospherics phase in and out, a middle movement where the brothers Gibbons’ dueling guitars set out straight through the ionosphere with the band’s full might and propulsive fury behind them, and then concluding with a final phase of fingerpicked acoustic guitars augmented when needed by percussion and flute. Circuit VII takes almost the inverse tack as after a short drone introduction a close to ten minute long multitracked acoustic guitar workout. Those guitars dissolve into a highly spaced wash of electric guitars alongside flourishes and gurgles which slowly build into a towering Sabbath-worshipping sludge monolith. This fury eventually recedes a bit to allow Isobel Sollenberger to turn in an extended run before the track trails away in a roiling and textured electric guitar grind. Good luck finding a more out way to spend forty-four consecutive minutes. Adrop and Circuit VIII were originally released in 2006 and 2008 by Three Lobed Recordings as installments within two of the label’s formative limited edition CD subscription series. Subscribers quickly understood how these performances were special and stood as high water marks within the band’s catalog. That cherished position has remained and grown over time for those hip to the their existence. The barriers have been lifted and this newly assembled double LP makes things easy for old heads and new heads alike. Where do you start with Bardo Pond? Adrop / Circuit VIII is the answer.

LISTEN HERE We Love to Look at the Carnage the 5th album by Brooklyn’s Wrekmeister Harmonies, J.R. Robinson, and Esther Shaw, features frequent collaborator Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater) percussion and Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) electronics. The album was tracked in a cabin in the woods and mixed with Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans) at his BC Studios. Wrekmeister Harmonies, known for their large ensemble performances and intense recordings, create immense tension with spare arrangements and instrumentation. We Love to Look at the Carnage charts a restless journey beginning in the middle of the night and ending in the wee hours of the morning. Robinson’s brooding lyrics grapple with phantoms both real and imagined, apparitions amplified by the feverish anxiety of insomnia. Shaw’s ethereal vocals dueling with Robinsons baritone create a delicious tension. Her stellar keyboard and violin work are on full display providing moments of calm. In keeping with the album’s stark lyrical content, much of We Love to Look at the Carnage was written in relative isolation. During the deep freeze of the New York winter, the duo decamped from their home in Brooklyn to a cabin in Woodstock. Wrekmeisters music has always drawn heavily on literature, this one is no exception. Influenced by Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, they find strength in stoicism. He explains: “hanging a more positive frame on the circumstances through the practice of negative visualization, …. things could always be worse”. We Love to Look at the Carnage, traverses an emotional landscape, through a metaphorical night with moments of calm between the dark storms. It is a celebration of the beauty of endurance, the hope in stoically moving against the dark forces that invade our thoughts and lives. The spare instrumentation a potent reflection of the isolation of the insomniac.

TRACK LISTING:

Sightless Pit may be a new name in heavy music, however its members are anything but, some of the most groundbreaking artist of the genre. Lee Buford (The Body), Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota) and Dylan Walker (Full of Hell) recorded their debut Grave of a Dog at Machines with Magnets with Seth Manchester (The Body, Lightning Bolt). Fans will recognize immediately Buford’s singular percussion and production, Walker’s venomous howl and Hayter’s virtuosic voice. The three share a bleak vision of existence and a willingness to follow each other into the musical abyss. The album recording process was extensive and intentional. Stretching over the course of two years, recording sessions by individual members shaped songs and continued to shape and inspire the next session be it by an individual or a pair. Walker describes the album’s core themes as being “about the anonymity of struggle, the darkness of a lifetime wasted warring against nature, god and everything else, only to be defeated... nothing... the end.” Throughout the album, Sightless Pit embody those struggles through building oceans of tension. A diversity of instruments and arrangements subvert expectations at every turn and bring new depth to each passage with the band utilizing samples of contra bassoon and Rufai mystic rituals while doing away with guitar entirely. Sightless Pit is a group of expansive ideas, extensive experience working together and shared vision. Over the course of the eight tracks, the trio reflect the extremes and emotional weight of their world view through elegiac dirges, driving beats, explosive crescendos. Together, three strong voices unite to create a work of remarkable clarity of expression of enormous sorrow, futility and most of all, beauty. TRACK LISTING:

Ride the Skies is the 2nd album by Lightning Bolt, and this re-release makes it available to fans for the first time since it’s original release. Compared to their first album it’s cleaner, tighter, recorded in studio rather than live. Which is not to say this is boring or sanitized in any way, Lightning Bolt never fail to make magic, filling a space with loud, raw sound. Sounds of synth or guitar turn out to be bass, and riffs become patterns, become a beat in the background, become a wall of noise, become a clear sound above it all. Lightning Bolt are known for the sound that truly comes into it’s own in this album. Outside of their 7 acclaimed albums, they’re known for frequent & exhilirating live shows, and this reputation has created a market for their older titles. Ride the Skies is rereleased with deluxe packaging featuring jacket art that was designed by Brian Chippendale for the original release but has never been realized until now. Recent Thrill Jockey Lightning Bolt re-releases seem to move as quickly as the Brians playing live, as old and new fans jump at the rare opportunity to finally get an old favorite in a shiny new jacket. “on Ride the Skies, Gibson makes his bass do things ... resulting in some of the most distinctive tones ever to be produced from the instrument. Brian Chippendale... rounds off the dynamic duo of Brians that is Lightning Bolt. With a style that’s similarly frantic, though decidedly more conventional than his fellow Brian, Chippendale completes the musical package nicely, intensifying the furious energy that makes Ride the Skies so fucking awesome.“ -Pitchfork

Lightning Bolt’s Sonic Citadel charted in Billboard (#22 hard rock & #23 Heat seakers) in 2019 “Listening is akin to the scene in The Wizard Of Oz where a sepia tone gives way to Technicolor; it opens up new vistas to the sound, while giving the band an opportunity to exhibit more involved musicianship. It’s less a blur and more a detailed map of planned aggression.” - NPR _____________________________

Emerging out of the small Uruguayan city of Canelones, in 2017 a new band named Las Cobras released their debut recordings – a 9-track album called ‘Temporal’ – and instantly became a name on the tongues of those tapped into the trans-Atlantic psychedelic underground. A couple of years on and the duo comprised of Leandro Rebellato and Sofía Aguerre are now gearing up to release their highly-anticipated sophomore album ‘Selva’ (translating from Spanish to ‘Jungle’.) On their debut Las Cobras magnificently fused together a cocktail of proto-punk and murky shoegaze with traces of afrobeat and Tropicalia, but throughout ‘Selva’ the band can be found taking all of those elements and cranking them up to 11

LP-HDB-047 02/21/2020 LP 5055869592819 25

Mhysa, the newest addition to the Hyperdub roster, is ‘a popstar for the cyber resistance’ hailing from Maryland via New York. ‘Nevaeh’ is lo-fi R&B with a bedroom feel and challenging lyricism focussed on identity and black experience for the online generation. She started ‘Nevaeh’ in late 2017, shortly after the release of debut album ‘Fantasii’, recording at home with some input from Lawd Knows, a frequent collaborator on her Scraaatch project. It is Mhysa’s intimate reflection on the black femme experience from multiple vantage points : sex and sexuality, self-love and self-discovery, black empowerment and lineage, and pleasure or the lack of it. She describes the album as “a prayer for Black women and femmes to be taken to or find a new and better world away from the apocalypse ... a safe space, a sort of negro heaven.” ‘Nevaeh’ is deeply personal but easily relatable, its intimacy heightened by scattered acapella moments and interludes referencing black pop culture, where Mhysa’s delicate voice is laid bare, while other tracks reprise the melancholic R&B her mother raised her on, updated through a queer lens. Conversely, several of the album’s tunes have found space in Kode9’s club sets over the last year, like the mischievous ‘Sanaa Lathan’ and skeletal ‘w_me’. Of this record’s progression from the last, Mhysa sought “to be more vulnerable and experiment with vocal range…to write more complicated vocal melodies that would be harder to do”, with her production now experimenting with new techniques, and (often self-taught) live instrumentation, as is her family tradition.

This trio - of whom little is known other than a kinship to their labelmates Flowers Must Die - have created eight exploratory journeys in which the listener can plot out a psychic course that traverses the likes of the meditative trancestates of vintage Popol Vuh, the chemically-altered mania of Guru Guru. synthdriven propulsion akin to French iconoclasts Heldon and Lard Free, and naturally the bucolic raptures of the band’s erstwhile national forebears such as Trad Gras Och Stenar and Älgarnas Trädgård, not to mention more recent exponents of the same lineage such as Hills and Dungen, Yet the entire vision the band conveys on this delirious travelogue is both timeless and paradoxically fresh. Just as their name invokes an ampersand, so this record is no less than a gateway who knows where; proof positive that audial dimensions beyond the everyday - at the hands of Och - are as accessible in 2020 as ever they were, not to mention still more potent. 01. HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755

Providence-based producer and hardware beat kingpin Davey Harms has been grafting the textures and intensity of noise onto technoid rhythmic grids since the mid 00s, before “mutant techno” was a common placeholder for this style. As that wave crested and many of its practitioners lurched off in other directions, Harms continues to fine-tune his practice and do what he does best: incite head-banging mosh pits in the club, or inject a bit of the club, however bonkers his vision of it may be, into the basement noise gig. His output under the monikers Mincemeat or Tenspeed, World War, and his given name always keeps us guessing, this time manifesting as an album credited to Davey Harms with the title of World War. The album caps off a loose trilogy of releases on Hausu Mountain, with Soundsystem as World War (HAUSMO64, 2017) and Cables as Davey Harms (HAUSMO41, 2016). World War offers one of Harms’s most coherent and precisely dialed-in programs to date, as his production tactics expand to include a wider arsenal of percussion tones and dynamic narrative arcs within the space of any single track. Harms excels in a state of constant forward motion, his beats compounding and complicating without ever losing their jagged groove and searing in-the-red intensity. Flecked with neck-jerking beatdrop moments and passages of abstracted electronic grit, his sessions gather mass and Artist: Davey Harms layers of complementary rhythm as they streak through time. OVERVIEW Over the last decade, Real Estate have crafted warm yet meticulous, pop-minded music, specializing in soaring melodies that are sentimentally evocative and unmistakably their own. While 2017’s In Mind longed for normalcy against the backdrop of a life as strange as a touring musician’s. The Main Thing brings that longing to a universal and urgent place, acknowledging the anxieties inherent in protecting a quiet existence. What emerges is a superlative collection of interrogative songs as full of depth, strangeness and contradictions as they are lifting hooks.

“I’ve got this family, and I feel this responsibility to gild this crazy world,” says guitarist, singer and primary songwriter Martin Courtney. The record’s most sentimental moments, then, are crystallized home movie flashes directed at Courtney’s children. “I can’t imagine what will be / in your earliest memories,” he sings on “You.” These mentions are set against darker realities; on “A Silent World,” he pleads, “Can’t let you wander off / Out in this wicked world.” Then there’s guitarist Julian Lynch’s first authored song for the band, “Also A But,” in which disembodied vocals intone “a poison bloom” and “mushroom cloud” apocalypse, set against sci-fi synths, unresolved guitars and propulsive drums. Instead of exploiting the juxtapositions between these opposing emotional modes, Real Estate embraces cohabiting contradictions. “It didn’t feel dark to me,” Courtney clarifies. “To me, it’s the normal stuff.” This duality is built into the arrangements themselves, interlocking emotionally with the nuance of the lyrics. “Gone,” about casting out toxic phantoms of the past, sets ominous descending strums against dirge-y drum machine before clearing the air with a lilting guitar lead. “Procession,” hallmarked by a bright, two-note motif set under shifting chords and beats, pits hometown pining against generational complacency. The effect is like gazing through a rearview mirror masked by fog, a sentimentalism so obfuscated you’re forced to look forward instead. “We create our own nostalgia. I’m constantly moving so I have more to reflect on,” explains Courtney. “If you look at the first record, it was a wistful feeling we wanted to explore. As we get older, the complexity has become more obvious,” adds bassist and singer Alex Bleeker. That’s paralleled in the album artwork itself; the band enlisted Bjorn Copeland of Black Dice, whose visual work focuses on recycling byproducts of consumer excess, to mimic the layout of Days. Bleeker describes their intention as “the understated Real Estate layout run through Bjorn’s pedalboard.” The effect is uncanny, reflective of this record’s astute self-awareness. A working title for Real Estate’s fifth album was Special Album. Instead, they settled on The Main Thing. In part, it’s a reference to the Roxy Music song: “Even before we decided where to record or who to record it with, I knew it needed to sound that good,” enthuses Courtney. “Which is an impossible goalpost, and a good thing.” But the “main thing” has another meaning for the group: a declaration of music making’s centrality to their own senses of self. “We discovered through the care and attention that we brought to this record that making music to resonate with other people is our catharsis,” says Bleeker. “The ‘main thing’ is following your path of inspiration, and hoping to inspire that in people around you. Hopefully the album itself will re-affirm peoples’ commitments to themselves and to each other, as it did for us.” Classic Real Estate reference points are still here – Yo La Tengo, Felt, Steely Dan – but they’re refined into hazier grooves, expanded into extraterrestrial sonic layers, deepened into slow-rolling phases. You can’t hit an impossible goalpost, but you can come close. Pouring all their hopes, dread, excitement, love and labor into these pristine arrangements, Real Estate made The Main Thing a special album indeed.

THE ROMANTIC On February 28, 2020, Canadian singersongwriter, Taylor Ashton will release his debut solo album The Romantic on Signature Sounds. Heralded for his “rich, compelling voice” (Exclaim! Magazine), Ashton released four albums of heady progressive folk with the Vancouverbased Fish & Bird before moving to New York City in 2015. For a solo debut, The Romantic is wonderfully collaborative and finds Ashton working with different players from song to song. Ashton writes, “The album is like a supernaturally good party - the musical conversation flows naturally, different people come and go who bring different energies but it keeps a consistent tone. Thematically, The Romantic is a document of Ashton’s identity as an expatriate Canadian living in the U.S., “processing change and loss and seeing the beautiful painful passage of time, from twelve different angles.” With his solo debut, Ashton brings his wide-ranging and richly textured folk-pop to a larger audience, appealing to an equally wide-range of fans from traditional old-time music to Harry Nilsson, Joni Mitchell, and Bill Withers.

CADENCE REVOLUTION: DISQUES DEBS INTERNATIONAL VOL. 2 Strut present the second volume in a series of compilations taken from the archives of Disques Debs International, the longest-running and most prolific label of the French Caribbean. Set up by the late Henri Debs in the late ‘50s, the label has continued for over 50 years, releasing hundreds of records and playing a pivotal role in bringing the creole music of Guadeloupe and Martinique to a wider international audience. Volume 2 of the series focuses on the label’s ‘70s output and the development of the unique Cadence sound, pulling disparate influences into a Pan-Caribbean blend of rhythms, styles and languages that dominated the dancehalls, clubs and concerts of the decade. Based in a small but state-of-the-art studio on the first floor of Henri Debs’ Club 97-1, just outside Pointe-à-Pitre in the town of Gosier, the label hosted sessions from the cream of local and regional talent, hothousing ideas into over 100 LP and 45 releases over the decade that reflected an increasingly confident creole identity. Groups like Les Vikings, Super Combo and Typical Combo along with a host of lesserknown bands were in fierce but friendly competition in the bals, dances and concerts in Guadeloupe, across the region and into Metropolitan France. Haitian Compas, Congolese influences from le Ry-Co Jazz, cadence-lypso and reggae from Dominica and a heavy dose of jazz and Puerto Rican salsa were thrown into the mix alongside local biguine, quadrille and gwo ka to power an unrivalled recorded output. Compiled by Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) and Emile Omar (Roseaux), ‘Cadence Revolution’ is released in conjunction with Henri Debs et Fils and Air Caraibes. The package features previously unseen photos from the Debs archive with both formats featuring extensive liner notes and an interview with singer and trombonist Christian Zora (Les Maxel’s, Energy).

KEY POINTS:

• First in-depth compilation of Cadence music, an overlooked chapter in Caribbean musical history. • Second instalment in Strut’s exclusive series from the Disques Debs International vaults • Majority of tracks unreissued since their original release • Includes unseen photos, extensive liner notes and interviews

Printer’s Devil • For fans of Hop Along, Rilo Kiley, Courtney Barnett, Nirvana. • US college radio campaign through Pirate Promotions (steve@piratepirate.com). • Press campaign handled by Will Osiecki (will@topshelfrecords.com). • Music video planned for second single single “I Go Out at Night”. • Music video for lead single “Alien with a Sleep Mask On”. • 2019 & 2020 SXSW Performing Artist. • Recent touring includes UK, Europe, Japan, and full US runs with PUP, Soccer Mommy, Wild Pink, Diet Cig, Foxing, Vundabar. • Full US headline tour spring 2020. “[M]assive hooks and sweeping cavernous melodies that will stick in your head for days and days.” -POST-TRASH “[O]n the surging new “Alien With a Sleep Mask On,” Ratboys have energetically reemerged as an unstoppable power-pop force with cinematic ambitions” -MTV Upheaval and change are themes spread throughout the songs on Printer’s Devil but all the while, singer-songwriter Julia Steiner embraces moments of uncertainty as a necessary part of growing. Steiner wrote the record with guitarist Dave Sagan while she was experiencing a dramatic shift in her own foundations, demoing out songs in her Louisville, Kentucky childhood home, which had just been sold and emptied out. With years of touring under their belts, Steiner and Sagan have welcomed a newly consistent four-piece lineup and the band’s comfortable core is tangible—transforming a once acoustic duo into a full-scale indie-rock band with a clear identity. The rhythm section brings the band not only consistency, but a jolt in line with Steiner and Sagan’s growing sonic aspirations: big-chorus power pop songs like “Alien with a Sleep Mask On” and “Anj” sound massive and larger than life, while the band’s dynamics beautifully thread together intimate folk and alt-country songs like “A Vision” and “Listening”. Building off their previous albums—AOID (2015) and GN (2017), which feature bright, youthful Americana narratives centered around soft vocal cadences and fluid, melodic lead guitars—Ratboys captures the bombastic, electrified fun of their live show in a bottle on Printer’s Devil and showcases their growing chemistry as a band. redeye distribution 505 Eno Street Hillsborough, NC 27278 tim@redeyeworldwide.com

WAJATTA DON’T LET GET YOU DOWN Release Date: February 28, 2020 Wajatta — the musical duo of Reggie Watts and John Tejada — return with their second album, Don’t Let Get You Down, to be released by Brainfeeder in February 2020. Coming from different worlds, but sharing a passion for the rich history of electronic music, beat-boxer / comedian / musician Watts and electronic music artist / DJ / producer Tejada bring out the best in each other’s formidable skill sets. Where the duo’s debut album Casual High Technology hinted at the broad stylistic possibilities inherent in the marriage of Watts’ elastic, soul-stirring vocals and Tejada’s layered, melodically inventive productions, Don’t Let Get You Down makes good on that promise. Wajatta is a mash-up of the artists last names. Having grown up with similar musical influences, Austrian-born Tejada and German-born Watts draw from their love of electronic music. Exploring the intersection between influences and innovation, the two describe Wajatta's music as “electronic dance music with its roots in Detroit techno, Chicago house, '70s funk and New York hip hop.” It’s a sound that is both familiar and wholly original — and, like all great dance music, ultimately life-affirming, as Watts vocalizes, sometimes without words, the joyful energy of his and Tejada’s funky, shape-shifting productions. “That’s the great thing about working with John,” Watts says with an infectious grin. “He’s so steeped in the history of this music. I just pick up on that and run with it.”

HIS NAME IS ALIVE RETURN TO NEVER Home Recordings 1979 - 1986 Volume 2

CAT NO: DISC6 UPC: 5060384617473 RELEASE DATE: 28th February 2020 Overview:

Second volume in a trilogy exploring the teenage tape experimentation of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive. Echo-drenched guitar instrumentals, field recordings and gorgeous ambient tones pulsate through the analogue murk, also taking in dalliances with greyscale industrial drone, musique concrète and even a burst of 4-track noise pop reminiscent of the early work of The Jesus And Mary Chain. Inner sleeve essay and interview once again by Mike McGonigal, the man behind Third Man’s recently launched Maggot Brain magazine and the author of books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500. Praise for His Name Is Alive’s All The Mirrors In The House (Home Recordings Volume 1): “These lo-fi, smudged worlds of sound, bled to cassette in Defever’s bedroom, feel remarkably prescient. His minatures have a particularly blissed-out, sun-kissed resonance, and a psalmic simplicity that’s as evocative as it is peaceable.” - Uncut “An astonishing document of lo-fi alchemy.” - Pitchfork “Sounds as good as any "ambient" release you've heard in the last five years” - The Quietus “It's fairly impossible to point out stand out tracks because the album as a whole is superb.” - Pop Matters “The next transmission from a man still making the everyday sound otherworldly.” - The Wire “A superb place to start investigating the work of this genuninely intriguing musician” - Electronic Sound

Alabaster DePlume To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 has a suitably individual genesis. Alabaster DePlume was working for Ordinary Lives, a charity in North Manchester UK which supports people with disabilities to live in their own homes and to live fulfilling lives. Specifically, he was working with the titular Cy and Lee. His job was to get the guys socializing and he did this by making up songs with them. They’d make up melodies together, humming tunes in the house when they needed something calm, or when they were haring round the city in a battered car. DePlume would record these impromptu sessions in his phone, then go to the studio and use the material as starting points for songs. He also ran music sessions for Cy, Lee and their friends. “People would focus on a central point, tuning in to one another. There are things we can’t put into words, which can be expressed with sound and music. These guys have fewer words than us, some of them have none. When we put some feelings into a music expression – that’s liberation.” It’s a method he uses in live shows wherever possible, placing himself and the musicians in the round. The aim is to maximize the creative benefits that a community of players and listeners can bring to the music. It’s a collectivist and humanist approach to making music that sits underneath everything he does. This is music made for a reason. “I like the idea that we’re not just doing frivolous decoration. We’re doing work for society. I like to listen for what needs to be said.” IARC0030 / LAT 0°17 07’02.2020” / TRC-005 Alabaster DePlume – To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol.1 Format/Release Date:

Alabaster DePlume is a Manchester UK-born, London-based bandleader, composer, saxophonist, activist and orator. He’s a resident at the legendary London creative hub Total Refreshment Centre, a recording artist for the off-grid Scottish Hebridean island label Lost Map, and now the latest arrival into Chicago-based International Anthem’s growing family of progressive musical explorationists. Whilst much of his music contains vocals – often whispered imperatives – this is a collection of instrumentals. The music of To Cy & Lee… contains naturally elegant orchestration wrapped around something visceral and primordial. The music is filled with space, inspired, he says, by computer games and Japanese animation, particularly Joe Hisaishi’s soundtrack for Castle In The Sky. The record combines new compositions alongside bygone instrumentals and under-stated lullabies that feel like they’ve been picked from between the cracks of civilization. DePlume purposefully brings together players of different skill levels and different backgrounds so they have to interact differently, placing them in unusual situations in which to record. “I wanted to destroy the idea of correct so we were playing it different ways for fun. We had a very magical time playing the tunes.” This is activism expressed through gorgeous music that breaks down barriers by encouraging that most powerful emotion: connectedness. THE SESHEN CYAN

Out 28th February, 'CYAN’ is the third full length LP from San Francisco Bay Area-based band The Seshen. Taking its name from a colour that is both strong and soft, the LP unravels the progression that has been made since 2016’s ‘Flames and Figures’, both as a band and as individuals; “Since ‘Flames and Figures’, a lot has been taking place both internally and externally.” Lyricist and vocalist Lalin St. Juste recollects, “we were on tour for the last album during the 2016 US election. There was an intense heaviness, a familiar one, one that extends generations and it just sunk in even further.” The battle to overcome this heaviness, felt as a result of political and social issues and through Lalin’s own experiences with combating depression, fuels ‘CYAN’. “I was at the edge of myself,” she confesses. “This album is about pulling back the layers of who I am in order to push through sadness and grab onto what’s underneath”. From the opening lines of the LP on “Take It All Away”, these ideas are displayed - “I think it’s been too long that I’ve been your puppet / Cut these strings, I don’t want any of it”, she sings. Led by exposed yet bold musical endeavours from bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara, the album sees The Seshen delve into uncharted eclectic realms; “I think that there’s a lot more rawness on this record” Aki muses. Anchored by Lalin’s sly, silvery vocals (which draw frequent comparisons to Erykah Badu) and cerebral yet playful rhythms from producer-bassist Aki, The Seshen’s music pulls from a deep well of electronic influences, R&B, and indie rock. Drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and sequencer Kumar Butler make the music three-dimensional, blending live and digital instrumentation for a mercurial, transportive sound. Since 2012, the Seshen’s live show has earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase on multiple continents, as they’ve shared stages with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, Petite Noir, tUnE-yArDs, and Thundercat.

Chicago drummer and composer Jeremy Cunningham wrote The Weather Up There in response to the loss of his brother Andrew, who died in a home invasion robbery in 2008. Co-produced by Jeff Parker and Paul Bryan, and engineered by Paul Bryan and John McEntire, this new work confronts the tragedy of violence and examines the acute ripple effect on several people’s lives through the lens of memory, response, and collage. Further deepening the textural and emotive impact, Cunningham formed a “drum choir” for these recordings, comprised of close mentors and colleagues Mike Reed, Makaya McCraven, and Mikel Patrick Avery. Cunningham also taps regular collaborators Ben LaMar Gay, Jaimie Branch, Tomeka Reid, Dustin Laurenzi, Matt Ulery, and Josh Johnson. “Jeremy is a rare drummer who possesses both insane skills and immaculate taste. His tunes have that same sensibility— they are layered and sophisticated while remaining visceral and hummable.” - Yoni Wolf (Why?) “Jeremy Cunningham’s upcoming recordisatestamenttohiscommitment to sound, feel and creativity that sets him apart from other drummers. I am inspired by his vulnerable and honest approach to music both as a drummer and composer.” - Makaya McCraven “I’ve had the pleasure of watching Jeremy grow into one of the most visionary composer/bandleaders on the scene today. It was truly an honor for me to work with him on The Weather Up There.” –Jeff Parker

SADDLE CREEK DOCUMENT SERIES DOCUMENT 011: The Big Net - Big Moon b/w Rufus

Artist: The Big Net Title: Big Moon b/w Rufus Catalog #: LBJ-305 Formats: 7" Street Date: February 28, 2020 Box Lot Quantity: 84 Genre: Alternative RADIO PROMOTION College, Commercial & Specialty radio@saddle-creek.com (402) 558.8208

An exercise in simplicity, The Big Net is the musical project of Kevin Copeland (guitar, vocals) Andrew Emge (drums) and Logan Miley (bass). Attempting to maximize the emotive power of the trio, the band’s style drives down the highway somewhere between drone and country, folk and rock. With Corey Rubin on bass and secondary vocals, their first self-titled record explored more of those rock roots: recorded live in two days with minimal overdubs, trying to capture the freewheeling magnetism that can come alive in a room. Released as part of Saddle Creek’s Document Series*, the band’s two new songs - "Big Moon" and “Rufus" - were recorded that same weekend. The idea of The Big Net is and has always been immediacy, letting that tangible thing in the air be itself and tuning into “song” at its most genuine. Both songs make good on those aspirations. “Big Moon” is quite literal. Written during a particularly lonely period in Copeland’s life, he would sing so that he could fall asleep and from that process the song seemed to “float in all at once.” “Sometimes all you have is yourself, and the moon, or a guitar, or a bed, or the ground under your feet, and that's ok. Those things will always hold you,” Kevin says of the song.

Suitably, "Rufus" was tuned into to the same kind of frequency, pulled from the ether as if it had somehow always existed. “When our friend Corey was playing bass with us, most rehearsals before everyone’s gear was even set up; someone was off and everyone else would catch up,” Copeland says. “Somewhere in that soup, an idea would come through. I remember latching onto what became the verse of “Rufus” and, when Andrew and Corey were out getting some air, I just played it over and over and that melody seemed to float right in.” The band have just finished recording a new, more exploratory LP, again captured in a single room over two days. With Copeland as the primary songwriter, the group continues to interpret earnest emotion in song through their hypnotic and dynamic sensibilities. For now, though, we have this new 7” single; an exercise in vulnerability, in trusting your impulses, in the magic that can be found within. * Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist.

SUNNY OZELL OVERNIGHT LOWS

SUNNY OZELL - OVERNIGHT LOWS ‘Overnight Lows’ gleams with engaging melodies and intelligent wordplays, performed with a sophisticated fluency in pop, jazz, soul and Americana dialects that makes it a delight to behold. Players on the record include Jay Bellerose (Robert Plant, Alison Krauss), Tyler Chester (George Ezra), Andy Hess (The Black Crowes, David Byrne) and Rich Hinman (Sara Bareilles). The album was recorded at Village Studios in Los Angeles. Sunny and her husband Sir Patrick Stewart now divide their time between Brooklyn and Los Angeles, and it was on the West Coast that her new album came into being, sculpted from lyrical and musical sketches that she carried in her pocket during Overnight Lows’ careful incubation. The album displays Sunny's love of language and an intimate, soulful delivery, from the cruising feel of 'Driving Highways' at one end — with its clever incorporation of a key line from Dobie Gray's 1970s soulful singalong 'Drift Away' — to the bluesy, smoochy 'Take You Down' at the other. “Almost like self-analysis,” she adds, “I went back through it and thought 'Holy shit, there's a lot about night in here, and not sleeping, and wrestling with memories.” ARTIST: TITLE: LABEL: REL. Stockholm, Sweden based HOLY aka Hannes Ferm is back with his third record Ryder, a massive step forward for the young artist. After 2018’s hugely ambitious three-years-in-the-making glam-psych odyssey All These Worlds Are Yours which was released to acclaim from the likes of Consequence of Sound, Bandcamp Daily, Prog Magazine, The Line of Best Fit and more, Ferm decided to take a step in the opposite direction. Teaming up with producer Jacob Haage (El Perro Del Mar) for Ryder, Ferm’s delivered an intimate synth pop record melding experimentation with conventional pop songwriting and again showcasing his ear for melodies, breaking new ground while still staying true to playfulness and immediacy that’s been HOLY’s signature from the start. Press for HOLY “It’s a journey towards the unknown and awesome beauty beyond our atmosphere, like the Spiders from Mars soundtracked a rocket launch.” – Consequence of Sound “A pervasive feeling of alienation feeds into the dynamism of the album, especially its title track.” – KEXP “…blending artful audio chaos with vintage, ‘60s melodies.” – The Line of Best Fit “dreams up a work of genius” – Prog Magazine “a more romanticized version of garage rock, sweet and a little bit noisy” – Stereogum “charming and wisplike, Ferm’s voice practically levitating over the guitars” – Wondering Sound “A garage-pop-of-sorts anthem for the disenfranchised” - GoldFlakePaint ALSO AVAILABLE: PNKSLM036-LP All These Worlds Are Yours LP (2 x black 12” vinyl, gatefold sleeve) UPC: 634457855014

On I THINK I’M GOOD, the second full-length from Seattle-raised, Brooklyn-based drummer and composer, Kassa Overall, the fast-rising musician masterfully dissolves the barriers between hip hop and jazz music. Taking cues from Karriem Riggins, Madlib and Flying Lotus, Overall matches jazz improvisation with beatmaker ingenuity. He’s ambitious as much as he is accomplished, dicing with serious subject matter as he leaps between the record’s soulful, kaleidoscope trip of ideas. The record features a cadre of New York’s brightest up and comers, including Joel Ross and Morgan Guerin, as well as some of its big hitters, such as Brandee Younger and Theo Croker. It even features an especially recorded cameo from legendary activist and author Dr. Angela Davis. It’s an album that speaks to the contemporary state of America. Overall wrestles with the abhorrent American prison system, the ebbs and flows of romantic relationships, and his experiences of grappling with mental health and hospitalisation. I THINK I’M GOOD conveys a singular feeling of intimacy, a byproduct of Overall’s indie hustle and uncanny at-home and on-the-fly production methods. It’s the perfect vehicle for Overall’s delicate meditations, weighing up emotions of despair, but never drowning out the feeling of a fragile but vital hope.

HIGHLIGHTS • 5th Album from Bordeaux based Ocoeur

Everything is the 6th album by Bordeaux-based experimental electronic music composer Franck Zaragoza's Ocoeur epithet. For this new full-length, Zaragoza quantumly pushes the Ocoeur sound into the depths of synth-based ambient enclaves. Zaragoza blends such "ambience," at the opportune times, with his now trademark careening sound-design focused beat work. The album's closing tracks, the 20-minute pairing of "Dawn" and "Dusk," find Zaragoza tempering his sound to near minimal to share his exemplification of long-form ambient bliss. The beauty in these two works displays an archetypal signpost to Everything's overall intentions: We currently, collectively, have our heads down, gazing into a device, as any subway or bus trip will attest. We tend to miss so much around us, and by interacting through these devices, communication often is somewhat cold and solitary. It's becoming essential more than ever to slow down and engage with "everything" around us. Zaragoza's aspirations for "Everything" is quite simple: for it to be the soundtrack to the palpable interactions with your environment and those in it. Everything is out on Feb 28th on 180-gram ultra clear vinyl and digipak compact disc.

• Previous press coverage by I-D magazine, Headphone Commute, Crack, Cyclic Defrost • Ocoeur shared the stage with the likes of Fennesz, μZiq, Arovane and Kangding Ray • 180 gram ultra clear vinyl w/download card. Limited to 250 units worldwide

GIGI MASIN CALYPSO (APOLLO RECORDS)

Apollo Records present a masterpiece of ambience and beyond – ‘Calypso’ – the stunning new album by Venetian maestro Gigi Masin. The LP is inspired by the mythical Greek island of Ogygia and its alleged real life counterpart Gavdos – also known unofficially as Calypso – a place of extreme beauty, which upon visiting had a profound effect on the musician. “ Gavdos gives you profound sensations in every corner, as here you can find enchantment, mystery, the getting lost to forget, to erase and drown the memories in a light and salty water. A place new and ancient, between cedars that have seen exiles, pestilences, blood and an desperation, isolation and abandonment, it’s the absolute of a life that every heart in love seeks, desperately, in the arms of Calypso, divine among the goddesses. An infinite love, and the infinite horizon of our dreams”, says Masin, eloquently. T he aqueous and sky-filled vistas of his native Venice are deeply intrinsic, but the best and simplest way to describe ‘Calypso’s sound might simply be Aegean, as every track takes you directly and vividly there – to timeless Greek beauty, glistening seas, picturesque landscapes and the sun’s bright, balmy heat. But, much more than just pleasant dapples of twinkling of audio balm, ‘Calypso’ is music of the gods, goddesses and heroes, subliminally capturing all the celestial beauty, awe, romance and adventure of an epic saga. ‘Calypso’ marks a new phase in Masin's musical evolution after re-releases and retrospectives on the Music From Memory label and new releases with the Gaussian Curve trio alongside Jonny Nash and Young Marco. Aptly released on Apollo, Masin joins a label who count other classics like Aphex Twin’s ‘Selected Ambient Works 85 - 92’, plus Biosphere’s ‘Microgravity’ and ‘Patashnik’ in its catalogue. C limbing in incremental steps to the pantheon’s summit, Masin now is close to reaching his rightful place alongside giants like Brian Eno, Laurie Spiegel, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tangerine Dream and Midori Takada.

fabric is one of the world’s most revered nightclubs. Launched in an era when so-called superclubs were taking hold of London, fabric was the opposite – a dark labyrinth set in a disused meat cellar, hidden deep beneath a derelict industrial stretch of the city. The sprawling building occupies the former site of Metropolitan Cold Stores in Farringdon, and since its opening weekend in October 1999, the club has welcomed millions of clubbers worldwide and held a place at the heart of club culture. fabric Records, the club’s beloved mix series, was founded in 2001. Alternating between fabric and FABRICLIVE, the series became an outlet for showcasing established and emerging names that reflect the values of the club and sounds played within its four walls every weekend. The series ran monthly across 100 editions until 2018. FABRICLIVE represents the finest in dubstep, drum & bass, jungle, breaks and experimental beats, whilst fabric covers house and techno, the breadth of talent displaying the far-reaching arms of both nights. The seminal series wrapped up in 2018 with closing instalments from fabric residents Craig Richards, Terry Francis and club founder Keith Reilly, alongside UK innovators Kode9 & Burial for FABRICLIVE. In 2019, the fabric presents series launched with an inaugural mix from Bonobo. The new label reimagined the iconic mix series into quarterly releases with an expanded roster of artists involved. It covers the wider range of calendar nights now on offer at the club and maintains the series’ place at the forefront of electronic music culture.
