In early 2020, Squarepusher had just released Be Up A Hello to huge acclaim, and was gearing up for a worldwide tour featuring some of his biggest shows to date. Then the pandemic hit, and it was all off… Devoid of distractions, naturally the artist headed to the studio to begin recording. He says that “[...]Without customary interruptions, time elapsed differently”. It’s an episode he’s dubbed “Dostrotime”. As such, Dostrotime is an attempt to capture the peculiarity of music catalysed by lockdown being part of the celebration of lockdown’s demise.

Dick’s Picks Vol. 2 has always been one of our favorites here at Real Gone, and not just because one of our two partners spent much of his misbegotten youth at the venue where it was recorded, the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Ohio. Which, if you’ve never been there, is one of those grand movie palaces built in the ‘20s. It’s the kind of place where you can easily imagine spirits roam…say on a Halloween evening featuring a band called the Grateful Dead. For, on that 1971 night—captured on this, the only single CD release in the entire Dick’s Picks series, here presented on a three-sided double-LP—the group played the most ethereal, dreamy, and, yes, spooky version of “Dark Star” ever recorded; it’s almost as if Jerry Garcia was communing with his ancestors (and maybe John Coltrane) for the first seven minutes of his beautifully structured, contemplative and yearning solo. Then, after the vocal verse, Garcia, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, and bassist Phil Lesh take turns suggesting a new improvisational theme before the band telepathically picks up on a two-note theme and Garcia launches into some of the most ecstatic guitar playing ever captured on tape anywhere (labeled by some the “Tighten Up” jam after the Archie Bell & the Drells song; others hear an embryonic “Eyes of the World”). The rest of the show keeps flying high; the whole band is on fire during “Sugar Magnolia,” a rare, early-‘70s performance of “St. Stephen” (the final live version until 1976) swaggers like it should, and a great “Not Fade Away”/ “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad”/ “Not Fade Away” medley rounds out the show…a “hallowed” performance indeed. Now, Dick’s Picks Vol. 2 has seen a very limited vinyl release before, but that release cut its lacquers from CD files. Well, as the recent saying goes, “Lordy, there are tapes!” Yup, Jeffrey Norman of Mockingbird Mastering has gone back to the original Scotch reel-to-reel tapes (pictured in the gatefold inner spread) to bring you a brand, spankin’ new master of this utterly amazing show. The Well Made Music boys Clint Holley and Dave Polster cut the lacquers, and guess what? This baby was pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records, which is headquartered in—that’s right—Columbus. Yep, it’s a homecoming all around, and we swear, though we know this Pick like the back of our hand, we heard some new things this time around, and oh, that Garcia guitar tone! For the first time, a group of women (sisters June and Jean Millington, Alice De Buhr and Nickey Barclay) wrote and sang their own songs, played their own instruments and, perhaps most importantly, rocked just as hard as any male band out there. And, as the first all female band signed to a major label (Reprise) and with superstar producer Richard Perry at the board, these four women became perhaps L.A.’s biggest “buzz band,” landing repeated bookings at the Whisky-a-Go-Go with a who’s who of rock’s glitterati in attendance. But, without a reference point with which to review them, the rock press was less than kind, often dismissing them as a novelty act. Fanny would have to become that reference point, and so they did for the generations of female rockers to come after them, from Joan Jett to Girlschool to Courtney Love and beyond. STREET DATE: MARCH 1, 2024 The title to Spineshank’s third (2003) album sadly proved to be prophetic, as the band broke up shortly after its release, even though—stop us if you’ve heard this one before—SelfDestructive Pattern was their most commercially successful record. In fact, they even garnered a Grammy nomination for the single “Smothered!” But Spineshank’s continued evolution away from death and nu-metal stylings towards a more radio-friendly hard rock sound hinted at creative tensions behind the curtain. Real Gone Music fans may remember we already debuted their second album, The Height of Callousness, on vinyl, and we’re doing the same thing for this one, with a printed inner sleeve housing a “bone” vinyl pressing. Multi-instrumentalists Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber have been friends since their Vienna schooldays. Richard later became half of the globally acclaimed DJ-producer duo Kruder and Dorfmeister, while Rupert worked in piano composition and sound-art installation. ‘No Hassle’ is Tosca’s fifth studio album. A luxurious tapestry of analogue and digital sounds, submerged samples and live instruments, it evolves and expands into an hour-long ambient symphony. The title reflects not only the duo’s laidback approach to making music but their whole philosophy of life. ‘No Hassle’ is all about contemplation and concentration. While recent Tosca releases like J.A.C. (2005) and the remix collection Souvenirs (2006) were a move towards classic song structures and club-friendly grooves, their latest is a much more introspective journey into inner space. introduces his album 8 tableaux, inspired by the works of Jean Paul Riopelle. He also wrote the original score for the podcast Dépeindre Riopelle. Like Riopelle, the Sainte-Anne-des-Monts born composer is particularly enamoured with the St. Lawrence River and the Laurentian landscape, which he admires every day from the heights of Kamouraska, where he lives. With 8 tableaux, Flore Laurentienne tried to give musical form to a painting. Music is an art that takes place over time. Painting is a freezeframe at a precise moment in the painter’s creative flow. So how do you combine these two art forms? Do you have to stop time? How do you stop time in music? By basing the structure of the pieces on cycles that recur again and again, we can make the listener believe that the music was there before, and that it will also be there afterwards. With no beginning and no end, all that’s left is this musical freeze-frame. In taking this approach, it became clear to him that music and painting both appeal to contemplation. Another concept that Flore Laurentienne worked on for this record is the notion of randomness in music. Riopelle is often associated with the Automatist movement. For him, Riopelle’s major works from the 50s are more reminiscent of romantic abstraction or even a great organic and organised chaos (a link to be made with nature here). It was on the basis of this reflection that he tried to integrate the notion of controlled chance or, rather, of chaos filtered through emotion. Flore Laurentienne is the unique project of Mathieu David Gagnon, composer, orchestrator and musician. His albums Volume 1 and Volume 2, won over audiences and critics alike, garnering two Félix awards at the ADISQ Gala in 2020 and the trophy for Best Experimental Album at GAMIQ the same year. The albums also garnered several nominations at the ADISQ Gala, the JUNO Prize and the long list of the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. “Fleuve No. 1” opened the Chanel fashion show at Paris Fashion Week 2022, and Flore Laurentienne has scored a podcast on Jean-Paul Riopelle’s Dépeindre Riopelle for Radio-Canada in 2023. Flore Laurentienne is the result of a happy marriage between electronic and classically-influenced music. The project is committed to constantly pushing back the boundaries between various musical genres such as ambient, experimental and progressive rock.

LUCKYME® kick off 2024 with a debut EP from Parisian producer Sunareht. Forged from the scene around Teki Latex and his Sound Pellegrino label, Sunareht - alongside contemporaries Le Dom, To Van Kao, De Grandi and Birol - runs Paradoxe Club, a label championing forward-thinking French dance music. Youth EP is exactly that - six fizzing club cuts that take the familiar “French Touch” sound, before dialling it up to eleven and flinging it into the far future. Samples are chopped into fluttering sequences and married with the glistening, bass-heavy sound design of post-dubstep and hyperpop. Opening track “Promises” ft regular collaborator and Aphex Twin favourite Le Dom is a certified party-starter, and a perfect introduction into the technicolour world of Sunareht. The rotating hook ducks and weaves through beautifully crafted drums in an unsettling bitcrushed landscape - as if the track can’t handle its own bandwidth. Elsewhere, title track “Youth” squeezes every drop out of a stuttering pop sample, rendering it unrecognisable; and “Break Bandits” provides a bright euphoria, mixing Etienne de Crécy synths with Overmono-style vocals.

Since it’s birth in 2012, Forndom has been a multi-project consisting of art and atmospheres from the ancient Sudermannia plains, filled with rune stones, mound hills and dark forests. The first release from the Re mastered catalogue campaign on Melanie's own revitalised Neighbourhood Records label (via UK s Easy Action) features the song recently used on the cult TV show Black Mirror backed with an unreleased version of the 60s hit ‘Bo Bo’s Party’. 7” is limited to 350 coloured vinyl copies and comes in a spined picture sleeve. Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960s. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other venues around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith’s frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Between 1988 and 1991 - during the band’s 4AD years – Pixies recorded six sessions for the BBC, five for John Peel and one for Mark Goodier. Catching the raw energy of the band’s live performances, these sessions felt immediately noteworthy, timestamping a moment when Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering were motoring out front.

Among the twenty-four tracks they recorded in this time period (inc. two doubles - ‘Allison’ and ‘Wave of Mutilation’) are favourites from mini-album Come on Pilgrim and three of their four 4AD studio albums. Also recorded were three covers; reworks of The Beatles’ ‘Wild Honey Pie’, Eraserhead’s ‘(In Heaven) Lady in the Radiator Song’ and The Beach Boys’ ‘Hang On To Your Ego’, a track Black Francis covered a few years later on his debut Frank Black solo album. Differing from the original 1998 compilation, this reboot sees all tracks from the six sessions now included and presented in chronological order. Something fans have been asking for. The sleeve is also new with a wonderful black and gold design by Chris Bigg now adorning it. A design that really stands out, Chris pays loving tribute here to the band’s late-visual director Vaughan Oliver, using unseen archival Pixies imagery by long-time collaborator Simon Larbalestier. On the same day as this release, Pixies will be in Dublin on the first night of a sold-out tour where they’re playing both albums Bossanova and Trompe le Monde in full.

Dry Cleaning’s first two EPs now remastered on one LP with original artwork and lyric sheet Following two critically acclaimed John Parish-produced studio albums – New Long Leg (2021) and Stumpwork (2022) – South London’s Dry Cleaning take a moment to reflect on their journey and pay homage to their roots with the release of their first two EPs, now remastered and reissued together on one single vinyl that features the original artwork and lyric sheet. The band’s origin story is as follows. Guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton, and bassist Lewis Maynard had been friends and musical collaborators for years, and invited mutual friend Florence Shaw – a visual artist, picture researcher and drawing lecturer – to join the band in 2017. With clear musical influences from the Feelies, the Necessaries, the B52s and Pylon, and constrained by the small garage space they rehearsed in, Dry Cleaning were drawn to making simple music; direct and uncomplicated, anything superfluous left behind. In March 2018, the group recorded their 6-track debut EP Sweet Princess with producer Kristian Craig Robinson in a single day. Two months later, they played their first live show and released the EP in August. Sweet Princess was a thrilling debut, its dizzying and restless instrumentals with Shaw’s sardonic vocals delivering a satirical collage of witty observations and social commentary. A further 6 songs in the form of the Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks EP quickly followed two months after. It was named in tribute to the band’s rehearsal space in Maynard’s family’s home, and to his mother Susan whose home-cooked meals sustained the four friends in between sessions. With singles like ‘Sit Down Meal’ and ‘Viking Hair’, Boundary... is a powerful companion to Sweet Princess. They share a similar pent-up energy, unsurprising given they came to life in the same environment, an environment that had a huge influence on the band during those formative years.

'à Fleur de Peau' presents Cyrille in her own words, with her own original compositions presented in her own arrangements, developed in close collaboration with New York multi-instrumentalist and producer Jake Sherman. The music on 'à Fleur de Peau' is the most original and personal of Cyrille's career. Drawing on her Dominican heritage with its cargo of African dance rhythms and Spanish folksongs, embracing the directness and simplicity of contemporary pop forms, singing tales straight from her own life, this is Cyrille as you have never heard her before. The album's genesis originates far from New York or her adopted New Orleans home, deep within the forests of Costa Rica and an astonishing tale of a creative rebirth. At the heart of each recording is a live performance by Cyrille, accompanying herself with voice and guitar or baritone ukulele: then together they would add layers of arrangement, using Cyrille's trademark vocal improvisations to suggest horn lines, percussion parts and counter melodies which Sherman would recreate on his array of vintage instruments. The results are uniformly appealing in their direct honesty but diverse in their sound. Cyrille says "I want to inspire women to create: with their hands, their wombs, their voices, whatever inspires them." She's created an album that is deeply intimate and personal yet completely open and accessible to all and marked a new chapter in her journey as an artist.

HAKUSHI HASEGAWA SOMOKU HODO Release date: March 8th 2024 Hakushi Hasegawa (They/Them pronouns) is a musician/singer-songwriter based in Tokyo, Japan. Having signed to Brainfeeder in July 2023, they shared a single – “Mouth Flash (Kuchinohanabi)” – featuring bass by the super-talented Sam Wilkes (Leaving Records). A few days later Hakushi blew fans away, making their debut at the iconic music festival Fuji Rock in Japan. In September Hakushi created the soundtrack for the noir kei ninomiya Spring/Summer 2024 runway show for Comme des Garçons at Paris Fashion Week. Now Hakushi is the focus of a cover-to-cover takeover at Yuriika [Eureka] for November’s issue of the mainstream Japanese literary magazine specializing in poetry and criticism. Consistent with Brainfeeder’s ethos of seeking out artists operating outside the confines of genre since the label started in 2008, Hakushi’s music is tricky to categorize as it straddles a few genres: alternative, electronic, jazz, pop/J-pop. Sometimes it’s pretty, at times it’s very intense and fast-paced. Releasing since 2018, they’ve already made a name for themselves domestically in Japan with a string of wonderfully wild releases and started to build a cult following internationally. More than anything, Daniel, Jan and Paul are keen that the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble are not written off as a curiosity. “Often people focus a lot on this whole "cross-over" aspect,” says Brauer. “We wish people would simply notice we have good chords, melodies etc. and take the music as it is. Because we make it the way we feel, and not for other, let's say purely conceptual reasons. Some only seem interested in how it’s made. Some reviewers perceive us as minimal techno, some as modern classical, some as nu jazz and so on. But we don’t divide the world into techno and non-techno.”
