You are reading the promotional materials for Katie von Schleicher’s new record, A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night. You’re goddamn right that’s a Harry Nilsson reference.

For A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night, von Schleicher turned to pandemic poker buddy Sam Owens (aka Sam Evian) and frequent collaborators Nick Jost (Baroness), Sean Mullins (Andy Shauf) and Brian Betancourt (Hospitality) to huddle together in a room. “When we got to Sam’s and set up on the first day, we played ‘400 Pillows’ first, just after dark. It felt immediately like a warm blanket,” von Schleicher tells me. The group worked daily and concluded promptly at 5pm so that Owens could make an elaborate meal. And then: poker. “Poker! This record was punctuated by a lot of hanging out. I put my trust in the people making it. I wanted to listen back and hear their voices, so to speak, and less the echo chamber of my own interior obsessions.” The string arrangements, written afterward by Wilder Maker’s Gabriel Birnbaum, go from melodic to dissonant, developing into lush expanses on songs like “Ruby” and “Every Step Is an Ocean.”

A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night coheres through an array of moods and characters. The widescreen “Texas” closes side A with sketches of frozen moments in the southwest. On “Overjoyed” she chases enjoyment despite having a migraine that lasted two weeks on tour. The record concludes with “Jeanine,” a love song for assholes, written from the POV of an asshole. “I’m drawn to unreliable narrators,” she says, winking overdramatically.

Let me spell it out for you: A Little Touch of Schleicher in the Night is the act of von Schleicher letting down her guard and unwinding her grip. Lyrically wry and classically lush, it’s a songwriter album that nuzzles up to the Arthur Russell and Kirsty MacColl LPs in my vast collection. In narrowing the gap between her personality and her songwriting, von Schleicher has made her most untroubled album to date. By giving up a little, she’s likely going places. “Poof.” See ya on the big screen.

The legendary jazz supergroup featuring Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Eric Dolphy, Roy Eldridge, Jo Jones & Abbey Lincoln Originally released in 1961 Remastered from the analog tapes by Bernie Grundman In protest against what they considered the failings of the jazz scene and the commercialization of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Charles Mingus and Max Roach staged their own DIY “rebel” festival.

The rebellion united a broad range of musicians: Older, more traditional artists Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge and Coleman Hawkins, jammed alongside younger more avant-garde players Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Knepper, and Booker Li le. Galvanized by the event, the musicians formed the Jazz Artists Guild, and the collective headed into the studio in November of that year to capture the magic on record.

Though the intention of the Jazz Artists Guild was to produce more concerts and more recordings, for one reason or another, this would prove to be the short lived movement’s one and only result.

The lost tapes have surfaced, bringing with them a walloping new stereo mix!

A sonic cocktail of acid garage, blues & psych rock from one of Detroit’s finest – featuring Ted Nugent! Dominated by gritty head-swirlers and heavy, fuzz guitar licks, their debut is considered to be an early innovator of heavy metal.

Their five and a half minute version of “Baby Please Don’t Go” is an absolute acid garage classic with some fantastic feedback and great guitar sustain. Nugent creates some serious guitar noise on this number and shows off his brilliant chops. The album closes with another garage classic, “Gimme Love.” This song has some laser fuzz guitar riffs and angry Mike Drake vocals.

In between these two garage monsters are many other great compositions. There are a few covers, two work really well (the splendidly bluesy “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and the gritty Who cover “It’s Not True”). They also hit real hard with “Colors,” a furious acid rock song with some sinister soloing. “Phillip’s Escalator” is very Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd with brit vocals, clanging chords and first class guitar scrape. It’s a true classic on this exceptional outing.

The guitar freakouts, Who-like energy and great songs make this debut a prime slice of early Detroit rock.

Heavee is a Queer Chicagoan DJ & producer with a long history in footwork. His 2022 'Audio Assault' EP on Hyperdub showcased synth-driven, melodic footwork, but ‘Unleash’ goes much further into audio world-building, with a fresh, spongy and citrus-y sound palette and rich, bright chord sequences. It's minimal, airy, balancing light and dark, sometimes breezy and sometimes clinical. ‘Growing Eyes Becoming String’ is the sixteenth studio album from British noise-rock pioneers The Telescopes.

Originally recorded over two sessions back in 2013 – one over a harsh Berlin winter in the Brian Jonestown Massacre studio with Fabien Leseure, and a second back in Leeds with early Telescopes producer Richard Formby – it’s a lost treasure that nearly never was. Succumbing to a hard-drive crash nearly a decade ago, the sessions were presumed lost and soon forgotten, until now. Miraculously rescued from the digital ether and finished by founding member Stephen Lawrie in his own studio over the pandemic, the album is now finally set for release in February 2024 via Fuzz Club and reveals another side to where The Telescopes were at in 2013.

Where their physical output at the time mostly consisted of experimental noise improvisations, so far removed from any obvious structure, ‘Growing Eyes Becoming String’ shows how The Telescopes – Lawrie backed by London experimental unit One Unique Signal – were actually creating more song-based music in a parallel existence. Across its seven tracks are all the trademarks of quality that longtime fans associate with The Telescopes’ music. OVERVIEW Recent years brought about for Julia Holter an existential focus on human connection, amid the staggering change that came with the death of loved ones (including her young nephew, to whom the album is dedicated) and the birth of her daughter. On Something in the Room She Moves, Holter vividly processes the complexity, gravity, and awe of this confluence of experience. She calls the music “sensual,” “flowing,” and “nocturnal”--a testament to how love, with all of its challenges, “reroutes neural pathways.” The cover art by Holter’s childhood friend, artist Christina Quarles, highlights the multiplicity of intimate connection: are the figures embracing or in battle?

The title Something in the Room She Moves came to Holter spontaneously as she was naming the Logic project file for an early demo. Coincidentally, a few months later, she found herself mesmerized by the eight-hour cinéma-vérité Beatles documentary Get Back in 2021. Her titular phrase flips the gaze of the Beatles lyrics (“Something in the way she moves…”); the woman is no longer passively observed, but actively augmenting space.

Holter has loved the Beatles since childhood, but sees the title less as a tribute than as a semi-surreal bit of automatic writing from her subconscious.

After a string of dream pop albums that established her searching voice in independent music—from 2012 breakthrough Ekstasis to Loud City Song and Have You in My Wilderness—Holter released the thrillingly experimental Aviary in 2018. Since then, she has scored films like Never Rarely Sometimes Always, performed a commissioned live score for The Passion of Joan of Arc with the Chorus of Opera North, and collaborated with her partner, Tashi Wada, who plays on her new album. Something in the Room She Moves is a remarkable progression in Holter’s oeuvre, synthesizing her free, improvisatory energy with her signature eloquence.

The project follows O’Donovan’s 3x GRAMMY® nominated 2022 album Age of Apathy, which NPR named “a moving self-portrait,” and No Depression called “an astounding accomplishment.” In addition to appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, CBS Saturday Morning, Kelly Clarkson and PBS Newshour, Pitchfork said O’Donovan “taps into the propulsion of prime Joni Mitchell,” while The New York Times praised the

album’s “musical surprises: daring melodic leaps, unexpected chord progressions, [and] subtle rhythmic shifts.”

While Age of Apathy centered around coming to terms with indifference, All My Friends reminds us of the power of collective action. The project features a number of special guests including Anaïs Mitchell, Sierra Hull, Noam Pikelny, The Knights, The Westerlies, The San Francisco Girls Chorus, Alan Hampton, Griffin Goldsmith and more.

All My Friends is on CD and multiple LP versions. The standard LP is pressed on Violet color vinyl. The indie/D2C only version has alternate cover art and is pressed on Ochre color vinyl with an autographed insert.

O’Donovan will tour the globe throughout 2024, with performances at Big Ears Festival (featuring the Knoxville Chamber Orchestra), FreshGrass Bentonville and more. Her previously-announced Barbican Hall debut in London is confirmed for June 18, with Eric Jacobsen conducting the Guildhall Session Orchestra and Music Centre London Session Choir. There will also be different touring configurations including acoustic shows and an upcoming collaboration with the band Hawktail.

So how did she get here? Here’s a rundown for those looking for the facts.

She was both a math nerd and a steel factory worker. She got inspired by Footwork and started making tracks with mentorship assistance from RP Boo and DJ Rashad, but her music was far from typical for footwork from the getgo. In 2011, she released her first track ‘Erotic Heat’ on the Planet Mu anthology ‘Bangs & Works Vol.2.’ Fashion designer Rick Owens heard it and invited her to soundtrack his Paris Fashion Week show. Already before an EP or an album Jlin was in new cutting-edge territory. And it hasn’t stopped since. Everyday Jlin wakes up early and clocks into her home studio working hard on new music. Her discipline and craft-like approach means that those who would try to copy her sound simply can’t get to the level she is at. Since ‘Erotic Heat’ she has released two bold albums, 2015’s ‘Dark Energy’ and 2017’s ‘Black Origami.’ She has also released her soundtrack to Company Wayne McGregor’s dance piece ‘Autobiography’ (2018) and most recently (2023) the mini-album ‘Perspective.’ She’s remixed µ-Ziq, Factory Floor, Ben Frost, Max Richter, Björk, Martin Gore and others. She’s collaborated with Holly Herndon and the late SOPHIE. She’s worked with visual artists Kevin Beasley and Nick Cave. She composed a string quartet for Kronos Quartet and performed with them live in a tribute to Philip Glass. She also recently completed a tribute to Sun Ra with Kronos. ‘Perspective’, her very well received percussion work for Third Coast Percussion has further opened doors for her in classical music. She’s even thinking of one day writing an opera. She had a residency at MassMoca Museum earlier this year (2023).

She’s performed live at Pitchfork Festival, Unsound Festival and too many others to mention. She’s also worked with Indian dancers, Company Wayne McGregor and renowned choreographer/MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham.

The early-mid ‘80s had their share of insane combos -- The Birthday Party, Black Flag and Minor Threat had the raw power to melt your mind in seconds.

SWANS, Einsturzende Neubauten and Big Black created enough overwhelming sonic pressure their sounds might actually flatten you. And Sonic Youth displayed such a dizzyingly unpredictable mix of art, pop culture and violence you’d sometimes leave their shows drooling. The Buttholes shared elements with all of these groups, but added an insane psychedelic edge and a propensity for bizarre spectacle.

40 years later, The Butthole Surfers have announced their first batch of reissues in collaboration with Matador Records certain to raise the roof for a lot of people who thought they had a pretty good handle on the outer realms of the ‘80s indie-rock scene.

And while the recordings are not the fully immersive experience of the Buttholes in concert, you may still feel as though you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole the size of Texas itself.

‘PCPPEP’ was the first to feature the power of the band’s classic two drummer line-up (King Coffey and Teresa Taylor). The synchronized percussive brutarianism of this pair (falsely rumored to be siblings) provided the perfect base for the unhinged blurt of the guitars and vocals then being shared by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary.

By the time they started touring to preview and then support the revamped version of ‘Psychic...

Powerless... Another Man’s Sac,’ the Buttholes’ live show was a berserk, evolving extravaganza of strobes, smoke, clothespins, naked dancing, bullhorns, raving lunacy and music that was as madly mind-blowing as that of any band who ever lived. ‘Another Man’s Sac’ was also wildly advanced over the previous records. Parts of the LP swaddled their punk edge inside so much oink and babble you almost couldn’t discern it, with other segments stretching out into a mutant form of garage blues, and others just swirling out of control.

This evolution continued on ‘Rembrandt Pussyhorse,’ which featured a set of tunes for which the Buttholes’ rock-based form destruction was mixed with experimental, tape-mangling passages of many flavors. Haynes was handling all audible vocals by this point, and his mastery of post-tongue dynamism was finally in full flight. Meanwhile, their live shows became legendary examples of excess and derangement, and their music just kept getting louder and stranger and more savage. It was the diametric opposite of the hardcore scene from which it had emerged, which was heading in ever more codified and stylistically conservative directions.

That’s what Carpool decided to with My Life In Subtitles, a record that both harks back to the purity of its beginnings but which also evolves their sound at the same time.

“We wanted to bring it back to the band’s roots,” says Colasanto, “and the original concept of why we started doing it—just me and Tommy writing songs together. It felt like we had so many members of the band at one point that there were too many cooks in the kitchen almost. This is more genuine and authentic.”

Recorded with Jay Zubricky (Every Time I Die, Pentimento and Marigold, among others)My Life In Subtitles is an album with a cohesive thematic and musical narrative. “The way I like to listen to music is to put on an album and listen to it start to finish. I like albums that take me on a journey and that show me what those songwriters were feeling while making you feel the same way,” said Colasanto.

Carpool have long since achieved and outgrown their initial goal of playing that city’s 200 capacity Bug Jar venue, their hometown is still embedded in their DNA. This record is a wonderful homage to where they’re from – and also serves as a warning to the rest of the world what Rochester has already known for years.

PATRICE RUSHEN - YOU REMIND ME (THE CLASSIC ELEKTRA RECORDINGS 1978-1984) Strut proudly presents a comprehensive retrospective celebrating the influential career of the 1970s and '80s soul, jazz, and disco icon, Patrice Rushen. This collection meticulously covers her unparalleled six-year tenure with Elektra/Asylum, spanning from 1978 to 1984.

After making her mark with three albums on the jazz label Prestige, Patrice, a prodigious talent since an early age, gained recognition by winning a competition to perform at the Monterrey Jazz Festival in 1972. By the time of the recordings showcased in this compilation, she had become a sought-after session musician and arranger on the West Coast, contributing to over 80 recordings for various artists.

Joining Elektra/Asylum in 1978, she became part of the pop/jazz division alongside visionaries like Donald Byrd and Grover Washington, Jr., with a mission to create sophisticated dance music for commercial radio and R&B. Featuring acclaimed musicians such as saxophonist Gerald Albright, drummer “Ndugu” Chancler, and bassist Freddie Washington, Patrice's music stood out as a complex and innovative proposition compared to her contemporaries. Her early classics like 'Music Of The Earth' and 'Let’s Sing A Song Of Love' showcased her talent as a lead vocalist, setting the stage for her 1979 album 'Pizzazz,' which included the unique disco track 'Haven’t You Heard' and the powerful ballad 'Settle For My Love.'

As Patrice's confidence and expertise as a writer, producer, arranger, and performer grew, she delivered standout records such as the slick dancefloor anthem 'Never Gonna Give You Up' and the 1980 album 'Posh,' leading to her landmark 'Straight From The Heart' in 1982. Much like the North Carolina wilds it reflects, Needlefall waxes and wanes from mysterious and unsettling to ecstatic and awe-inspiring, capturing the sacred dimensions of the natural world. Magic Tuber Stringband draw on a host of fellow travelers to realize Needlefall’s intricate arrangements, exemplifying the diversity of contemporary folk movements, placing their work in the tradition of modern innovators like Moondog, Harry Partch, Pauline Oliveros, and labelmate Sally Anne Morgan. The vast forests and mountains that inspire the band as a metaphor for living music traditions – ever-changing and yet still standing, shaped over time by human hands while equally shaping the human experience.

Magic Tuber Stringband, from North Carolina, are Courtney Werner and Evan Morgan, accompanied by their regular bassist Mike DeVito. Morgan is an organizer within the local music community, and Werner is a dedicated naturalist involved in local land stewardship. Needlefall answers the question “what does a modern string band sound like?” with powerful new arrangements of traditional songs and transcendent originals. The album is teeming with life, translating abundant ecosystems into arcing melodies and shimmering, mystic drones. The band explains: “If you spend enough time out in the woods you inevitably see or hear things that are hard to explain. I’ve been in caves where it’s total darkness and you’re enveloped by the disorienting sound of dripping water. The natural sights and sounds in these places are often repetitive, percussive, expressive, sometimes unsettling - the way that water carves patterns into rock or tree trunks appear in endless rows.”

Toronto / New York producer Tony Price makes his Telephone Explosion debut with the Interview / Discount LP. Made up of two side-long tracks, the record is an electrifying collision of fractured jazz- concréte and combustible downtown funk that crushes the entire continuum between minimalism and maximalism into a hypnotic wreck of metropolitan sound matter.

Finding inspiration in the quicksilver impressionism of modal jazz, the manic bombast of early electro- funk and the narcotic non-linearity of 1970s minimalism, Price assembled a crew of jazz-funk heavyweights and free-improv wizards and set out to create an auditory representation of the soundscapes of New York City.

“Interview” is a meditative exploration of the tile-tunnelled labyrinths of NYC’s subway system at night. Saxophone soliloquies spill around a corner as a falling constellation of Rhodes tines and luminous cymbals ricochet against snaking organs. Vaporous synthesizers spark like short circuiting cables overhead as a bass clarinets chugs at a Reich-ian pulse astride a locomotive bassline carrying the listener from station to station.

OVERVIEW Mind out of Mind is the second album from Minneapolis-based progressive rock band K'mono. It provides a dynamic journey of sound and narrative as it weaves a tale of a king banished from his own kingdom.
