Redeye Label of the Month: REAL GONE MUSIC
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
Just out of college, I got hired in New York by a publishing company (Crown Publishers) that just happened to have a mail order music division (Outlet Book/Publishers Central Bureau) and a reissue label (Murray Hill). Not much has changed since (except location)!
When and where did the label begin?
Our co-owner Gabby Castellana and I left Super D in 2011 to start the reissue label, which is based in Southern California (Orange, CA and West Hollywood)
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
Elvis Presley at the beginning of “Milk Cow Blues”: “Hold it fellas, that don’t move me. Let’s get real, real gone for a change!” Plus the stuff we do (reissues) is indeed real gone on many levels!
How has the label changed since it started?
Definitely the big change is shifting from CDs to vinyl.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I handle A&R, Production, Copywriting, Purchasing, some marketing and sales. Gabby handles all the back-end stuff–finance, operations, digital, some sales. Jeremy Sobotor is our swing man…purchasing, operations, A&R, some graphics, some refereeing. Wes Lostenau mans the warehouse and makes some unboxing videos for us that are quite entertaining if you haven’t seen them. Then we use three freelance designers, a freelance PR person, a freelance social media marketing person, and some independent producers. Lean and mean!
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
Definitely right-sizing the inventory. We went from being sold out of everything for months at a time to being overstocked in less than a year. Hanging on tight to the fluctuations in the marketplace has been a real white-knuckler.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
No, not really. We do all genres, all eras.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
I actually go to Metacritic to see what new music has been highly ranked by consensus and check it out. I think my favorite album last year was “Rat Saw God” by Wednesday.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
Our signature is that we don’t have one. But consistently good quality. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
Though both Gabby and I had a lot of experience, he in distribution and I in licensing and production, we weren’t sure it was going to work when we first started out. But we hit our business plan on the nose the first few years and we were off. Now that we are well established, it would be nice to downshift our legendarily prolific release schedule and find the time to delve deep into
more artists’ catalogs, kinda like what we have done with The Donnas. And we actually have some of those kinds of releases on tap later in the year. We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
You mean besides all the Grateful Dead releases? I am real proud of our two Bob Wills releases; speaking of the Dead, the Texas Playboys were the first and maybe best jam band. And I still can’t believe we got “Welcome Interstate Managers” by Fountains of Wayne.
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
I think it’s a lot of fun and a nice selling point as long as you don’t end up significantly sacrificing sound quality. We did a red and black cornetto design on our reissue of the Ocean’s Eleven soundtrack to mimic a roulette wheel. Looked great!
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? We never left CDs and we still put them out. Cassettes can suck it. Shitty format then, shitty format now.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
Since we put out a lot of different types of music from a bunch of different eras, that’s a difficult question to answer. CD buyers are definitely older (which is kinda ironic, since it’s a newer format). Lately we’ve been putting out a lot of modern rock titles on vinyl, which has attracted a younger audience.
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
Yes and the label has actually put out two releases of my own, one under my name and a project with my daughter Edie called NXTOFKIN (she just wrote and recorded an album that we may put out too).
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is important and I wish we did a better job of it. Industry needs more options and better education.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
Definitely important and I am proud that we have put out some socially conscious releases, like our Black Jazz titles, Eugene McDaniels, etc. Hope to have more soon.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
By far the biggest change is that selling recordings does not power the business any more. It is very difficult to make it as a musician without touring. The barriers to entry are much lower in terms of recording but getting noticed is very challenging. The age of the A&R scout discovering an artist and the label nurturing a talent is over. Now it’s data and social media driven. (I guess that’s more than one change). Honestly, the biz used to be a little more fun. I miss the lobby at the old NARM conventions, and being taken out by people with seemingly limitless expense accounts!
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:
How about ones that are gone? Sounds on St. Mark’s in NYC and Aron’s in Hollywood. So many great ones still around, I don’t think I can pinpoint just one. Hats off to the folks keeping the flame of record retail bright.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
You mean when we’re all Real Gone? We’re the label that put out Doris Day to the Deviants, Steve & Eydie to The Slits, Barry Sadler to Charles Bukowski. We captured a swath of this crazy, mixed-up musical orb we (used to) live on.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s debut live double album, Fu Manchu is releasing the first ever repress of Go For It…Live!, which has been out of print since the original pressing. The 22 song release was recorded on the band’s 2002 Californ ia Crossing World Tour, which marked the debut of drummer Scott Reeder. Fu Manchu is renowned for their live performances and this set doesn’t disappoint, with incendiary renditions of fan favorites such as: “Hell On Wheels,” “Mongoose,” “King Of The Road, ” “Evil Eye” and their always requested cover of “Godzilla.” As AllMusic.com said, “Go for It...Live! is an absolute must for those enamored by Fu Manchu's buzzy sound, and a great introduction for those curious about a band woefully ignored by radio stati ons and video channels.”
This limited edition vinyl run of 2000 units has one LP pressed on Neon Yellow and the other on Neon Orange vinyl and is packaged in a gatefold sleeve with brand new artwork including never before seen photos of the band and flyers from the associated tour along with printed dust sleeves with additional new images. This new pressing has been specifically remastered for vinyl by Carl Saff for optimum fidelity. The limited edition 1000 unit CD run also features the updated art and a digital specific remaster.

“…a reminder that living for art ultimately outweighs the adversity.” - Pitchfork
Crystalizing the tragic self-celebrating kingdoms of fortunate failures, false heroes, music press deities of limitless deceit, hometown dive gods and humanity in the grips of all its romanticized wonder and woe — DIY pop titans The Reds, Pinks & Purples take aim at the threads of hope with untethered abandon on their new album Unwishing Well. Spanning 10 gem-like tunes, it's yet another exhibition of Glenn Donaldson's flawless mastery of intimate - yet expansivedowncast pop.
Over the course of the last five years The Reds, Pinks & Purples have released six albums, several EPs and countless singles, all dedicated to breathing fresh life into the cerebral, leftfield pop that animated the gloomy teens, college radio DJs and record store clerks of the 80s and 90s. Such touchstones as The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, Magnetic Fields, Felt and more are obvious inspirations, but Donaldson’s prolific, prodigious talent for mood and melody have virtually created their own genre, and Unwishing Well is its purest embodiment yet.

“There are times in life when you’re so present, so fully immersed in the moment that you can catch a glimpse of another universe, of a realm beyond our own,” says Louisa Stancioff. “It might last for a second or an hour, it might come in the midst of bliss or sadness, you might be alone or with a lover, but when it happens, there’s nothing quite like it.”
When We Were Looking, Stancioff’s stunning Yep Roc debut, is full of those moments. Written and recorded through a period of deep heartbreak and uncertainty, the collection is the raw and unflinching work of a nomadic soul who spent stints living in Alaska, California, New York, and North Carolina before returning home to her native Maine, one that holds nothing back in its bittersweet reckonings with pain, healing, acceptance, and growth.
Stancioff writes with a cinematic eye here, conjuring up richly detailed stagings for her emotionally-charged character studies, and the guitar-and-synth-focused arrangements are immersive and nuanced to match, thanks in part to the evocative sonic landscaping of producer/keyboardist Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Craig Finn), who proves to be an ideal creative foil on the record. Add it all up and you’ve got a dreamy, nostalgic Polaroid of an album that blurs the lines between indie stoicism and folk sincerity, a lush, cathartic work that hints at everything from Phoebe Bridgers and Arlo Parks to Big Thief and Waxahatchee as it learns to find the beauty in grief and rebirth.

Welcome to the sweet-but-savory, suspiciously sticky, and slightly sinful world of old-school movie theater intermission messages. It’s where big-band jazz, psychedelic rock, sequin-bedecked disco, virgin vanilla orchestrated pop, and more are pressed into service, with your satisfaction as the solitary goal.
Thirsty? A jumping jazz trio backs jazz/pop singer Joanie Sommers (famous for her ‘62 hit “Johnny Get Angry”) on the standard “Makin’ Whoopee” with lyrics revamped to turn you on to the sparkling taste of Pepsi. A hipster from an animated, Paul Klee-gone-bebop tableaux slings beatnik proto-rap in service of Dr. Pepper. An ode to Orange Crush goes down easy amid hip-swiveling piano licks.
Hungry? “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” is the theme from the Citizen Kane of intermission films, preserved in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. The classic '50s clip features animated treats crooning award-winning soundtrack composer Jack Tillar's snack-bound song, which borrows liberally from “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Hey, are we crazy or does candy singing about the consumption of candy smack just a wee bit of cannibalism?
Just imagine—what if the explosion of multicolored madness you encounter in this alternate dimension were the fabric of your everyday existence? What if candy-counter expeditions and popcorn pop music were the news of the day and your world had a warm, woozy 35 mm blur and a dream-state sugar rush? It’s a tantalizing notion. For starters, here’s your soundtrack.

In Horror Vacui, Paris-based, Iran-born 9T Antiope use a sparse palette of octave mandolin, violin and octave violin, synthesizer and vocals, to build a dynamic world that seems to exist outside of the bounds of time and place. Cinematic, spare, heavy, gossamer, and informed by the band’s work as sound designers and composers for theatre, film and performance art, Horror Vacui is a concept album that explores what sounds have been, what they’ll become, and the nature of memory, dementia and decay. As 9T Antiope attempt to reconcile different worlds, they create the sound of arriving in a new world all your own.
American Dreams Records is a transcontinental experimental label dedicated to showcasing art inspired by patience, intention, perseverance, hope, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than we found it. In January of last year, Sunburned gathered for a wintery week of sessions at Big Blue, Adam Langellotti’s studio/house in Turner’s Falls, MA. With the cozy setting and Sunburned’s nature, it was a family affair, with members dropping in and out, cooking meals, going through old photos, making beer runs. The current Sunburned core was there, while Michael Josef K and Matt Krefting were back in the mix after years away, and Sarah Gibbons was making her proper recorded debut.
Plus, original member Phil Franklin was back in the States after three years of travel restrictions from his current home in Australia. Sunburned fans might know Franklin’s Mint, Phil’s song-oriented project that involves other Sunburneds as musicians, mixing original compositions with covers. On Nimbus, he’s got one of each, as the Mint gets folded into the larger band. “Ishkabibble Magoo” is a jaunty earworm of the highest caliber, weaving hilarious, ingenious wordplay into an infectious melody. And the coded etymology of the title is hard to beat “Ishkabibble” can mean “Don’t worry,” while “Magoo” can refer to someone who’s overly wholesome. So, like, who cares, square? On “Lily Thin,” Franklin leads a cover of the Sun City Girls’ “Cruel & Thin,” itself a re-working of “Leïli Twil” by Younes Megri. It’s all campfire flicker and smoke, featuring a stately organ solo from P.G. Six that’s nothing short of miraculous.
Then there are the readings. Sunburned is no stranger to the spoken word. Impromptu rants and missives are common. They backed the legendary poet Ira Cohen during performances in the early 2000s. Agony interspersed jams with readings. On last year’s “Hypnotape”, band members read from a stack of books passed around the studio. But something about the spoken word pieces on “Nimbus” feels different.
As the record begins, atop a delicate bedding of Shannon Ketch’s sequenced synthesizer pulses, Sarah Gibbons’ meandering Mellotron, and the twinkle of bells, the poet Peter Gizzi intones the word “Nimbus.” He’s naming the poem he’s about to read, the record you’re about to hear, describing the music Sunburned makes. “It’s so random becoming a self,” he reflects, the words confessional and ghostly, the voice urgent and tender. Gizzi’s a newer member of the Sunburned orbit, but has been a serious presence at recent live shows.
The bulk of the LP’s second side consists of two longer poetry-based pieces. “Consider the Wound” is Gizzi’s again. The music is darker, the reading more punctuated and pointed. Gizzi rides the syllables, following the words up and down their scales, then slamming the brakes for blunt statements. The band is fuller here, looser, more churning. More than just words over music, it’s an emotionally wrenching experience. The album closer, “Hilltop Garden Lament,” is a funereal thump, with Matt Krefting reading this time. His voice is full of playful, deadpan beatnik violence while the instruments (acoustic guitars, drums, various keyboards) swirl in a witchy invocation. It’s fun to play in the dark.
Bolting the components together are a series of instrumental fantasias. “The Lollygagger” is a funky, dreamy groove from John Moloney, Michael K, and Rob Thomas, with charging, chiming synths from Taylor Richardson, Ketch, and Conrad Capistran leading the way to the battlefield. On “Brainticket,” Gibbons’ vocals recall the haunt of A.C. Marias or “Melody Laughter”-era Nico, and Ron Schneiderman’s bright golden guitar sounds like a honeyslide from heaven. “Walker Talker” highlights the hot-tar-heat-stroke of Jeremy Pisani’s guitar while the Mellotron, helmed by Capistran this time (Sunburned shares their toys), comments with cloudlike splendor.
As with all Sunburned records, the compositions were done on the fly. Gizzi rolled up and busted out his manuscript for Fierce Elegy (Wesleyan Press), then still unreleased. Krefting read spontaneously from a pile of his notebooks. Franklin had “Ishkabibble Magoo” in his back pocket, but no one expected it and Gibbons unraveled harmonies in real time. If the setting is right, magic will happen. And so, this record.
For the cover art, Sunburned pulled another master into orbit. Video and installation artist and David Bowie collaborator Tony Oursler lent an image of his multimedia sculpture “SpEcTrUm,” a collage of digital chaos within the silhouette of a haloed, meditating figure. The image perfectly evokes the aura of the record, and the band itself. There’s no unifying theory of Sunburned, nor should there be. There isn’t even a notion of forward momentum. There is only time as a liquid property, looping and infinite. It is truly a nimbus, an atmosphere, a bright and golden disk investing a group of humans, a cloud so full it can only bring forth rain.

Cauthen first earned his reputation as a fire-breathing truth teller with the acclaimed roots rock band Sons of Fathers, but it wasn’t until the 2016 release of his solo debut, ‘My Gospel,’ that he truly tapped into the full depth of his prodigious talents. Rolling Stone called the album “a triple-barreled blast of Texas country, soul and holy-roller rockabilly delivered by a big-voiced crooner,” while Vice Noisey dubbed it “a somber reminder of how lucky we are to be alive,” and Texas Monthly raved that Cauthen “sound[s] like the Highwaymen all rolled into one: he’s got Willie’s phrasing, Johnny’s haggard quiver, Kristofferson’s knack for storytelling, and Waylon’s baritone.”
The album landed on a slew of Best Of lists at the year’s end and earned Cauthen dates with Elle King, Margo Price, Billy Joe Shaver, and Cody Jinks, along with festival appearances from Austin City Limits and Pickathon to Stagecoach and Tumbleweed. He followed it up two years later with ‘Have Mercy,’ an EP that prompted Rolling Stoneto dub him “one of the most fascinating, and eccentric, new voices in country music” and NPR’s Ann Powers to proclaim it “the year of Paul Cauthen.”

le under: rock shoegaze slowcore
Info:
Over atmospheric instrumentation expanded by cinematic structure and pacing, Pearlty presents Knifeplay somewhere between dream-pop in uenced shoegaze and lofty slowcore, never fully committing to one or the other in its insistence on creating an immersive, organic world
Originally released in 2019, Knifeplay’s vivid debut Pearlty documents songwriter Tj Strohmer’s expressions of early adulthood in what he describes as “the journey from innocence to experience ”
Written during a time of immense inspiration, Strohmer was able to peel himself away from detached nihilism, uncovering the physicality and therapeutic powers of songwriting Newly emboldened by this discovery and the talented community surrounding him, Strohmer channeled this revelation into his work, taking Knifeplay from a bedroom experiment that merely wrote songs to a more substantial project with a purpose
Pearlty
’s various climactic passages, like those heard on the impressionist album opener “Tears”, envelop listeners in textured walls of distorted guitar and noisy breakdowns, a distinct hallmark of shoegaze – but Knifeplay’s compositions go far beyond such conventions
Also featured are downtempo compositions – such as the tribute track “Angel” – that call on a range of in uences, from grunge to lo pop, all the way back to slowcore Layers of Strohmer’s falsetto lilt adorn the songs with another dimension of sentimentality, while rounding out the sonic vastness of the group’s emotionally enrapturing style, lending impressive depth to the band’s debut full-length

Offering some of her first original compositions, ‘The Time Has Come’ was a break from tradition in more ways than one for Anne Briggs. Where previous recordings displayed the unaccompanied melodies of her voice, this album - originally released by CBS in 1971brings additional instrumentation in the form of guitar and bouzouki. The result is that her vocals are not submerged but heightened - the plucked strings providing the perfect foil for her crystalline inflection. ‘The Time Has Come’ is a mix of Anne’s own songs alongside some notable covers (Lal Waterson, Steve Ashley, Stan Ellison, Henry McCulloch). All are graced with the quietly self-assured elegance of Anne’s playing, with sounds ranging from the breezy ‘Clea Caught A Rabbit’ to the terrible beauty of ‘Wishing Well’ - each song typifying the bouzouki or guitar style. To say that Anne was an accomplished picker is to do her something of an disservice - the intricacy of her finger-work rivals - and more often than not eclipses - any number of her contemporaries.

Re-press of this sought-after title
In Spring is the second record by Tara Clerkin Trio, a Bristol-based group who appeared to emerge from below the radar of near-all in early 2020 and in the presence of one of the most captivating records of that year. This latest 23 minute, four song collection, recorded in various stages and locations over the last twelve months, does nothing to detract from those first impressions, refining the woozy and shimmering oddness of their debut into an avantpop sensibility that is increasingly their own. If the group did arrive fully formed, what that form was did feel supple and hard to grasp. They were, in a sense, essentially new sounding, or at least ghosts between the established lines, and with this new record have doubled-down on their inherently Delphian instinct. At its heart, In Spring is a record of subtle contrasts, experimental yet familiar in its intimacy, obviously modern though tied to certain lineages, and driven by a pop logic which is also free-form and seemingly improvised. Their approach to sound is perhaps the guiding principle here, less concerned with genre as it is texture and feeling, drawing from jazz, folk, modern composition, trip hop and downtempo electronica, yet evading all of those categorisations.

It’s two years since CONNECTIVITY (2021) smashed into the top 40 and debuted at #1 in the UK download chart, propelling the fiercely independent voice of GRACE PETRIE from critics’ choice to the main stages of major festivals across The UK and Ireland, Australia and Canada. For a seasoned road dog who spent almost 15 years clocking up tours with the likes of Billy Bragg, Frank Turner and Hannah Gadsby, the COVID lockdowns were like a cage for Petrie and when restrictions lifted, she hit the road harder than ever, armed with her most searing and successful record to date, and determined to make up for lost time. Sell-out headline tours across the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand followed, with audiences from Melbourne to Toronto mesmerised by the ferocity of her socially urgent lyricism and the barnstorming power of her live show. But travelling the globe hasn’t diminished her laser focus on the political issues plaguing the UK, with two more Prime Ministers, endless blunders and evermore division seen since she last swapped microphone for pen and paper. Now the songwriter is back - stronger, older and a whole lot angrier than ever before. As right wing ideologues trade in suspicion and cynicism, tearing communities apart against a backdrop of crumbling public services, the ordinary folk of Britain continue to suffer the consequences of corruption and individualism. From within this maelstrom of despair comes BUILD SOMETHING BETTER - the new, uncontainable album from Grace Petrie Recorded raw and unflinchingly with folkpunk legend Frank Turner in the producer’s seat, BUILD SOMETHING BETTER is a return to blistering protest form for Britain’s most relevant political songwriter, a decade after being hailed as “a powerful new voice”, (The Guardian) and “a millennial’s Billy Bragg” (Huffington Post).

Shooting Daggers are fast becoming a fiery beacon at the beating heart of the burgeoning UK hardcore scene. Plus, their full on live shows have made them a must see proposition. Whether it’s Desertfest, supporting Amyl & The Sniffers, a plethora of underground gigs and festivals across the UK and Europe including Fluff and Burn It Down. Or sharing the stage with the cream of up and coming American hardcore, Scowl, Gel, Zulu, Spaced, and being personally asked to play the ‘Cult Of Luna’ curated ‘Beyond The R ed Shift’. There’s no doubt that Shooting Daggers are most certainly in demand. It’s a wonder they have the time to do anything else. Thankfully, they had a week spare to go in with Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse Studio in London to record their debut alb um. Titled ‘Love and Rage’ it’s a huge leap forward from their EP, in fact we believe Daggers have recorded something of a corker in terms of modern hardcore in fact ... a potential minor classic debut maybe. Classic you say? As in 'The Ramones' or 'Damned Damned Damned', as in 'Los Angeles' or 'Bad Brains', as in 'Repeater' or 'Pussy Whipped', or as in (because they wouldn't forgive us if we left them out) 'Non -stop Feeling', by the genredeviating, mainstream breakers Turnstile. And yeah, we've noticed ho w male that list is! Whatever way you spin it, there is no doubt that ’Love and Rage' is an album of jaw dropping depth and melody as well as blinding energy and angst.

John Zorn, John Medeski.
Part One: Crossing the River Styx * Part Two: A Pilgrimage Through Hell
Recorded at the Grote Kerk in Den Bosch as part of Zorn’s 70th birthday celebration at November Music in Den Bosch, this exciting performance pays tribute to one of Zorn’s seminal influences—the 15th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Performing on two different organs simultaneously, running from one to the other, this is one of the most bizarre installments in the entire Hermetic Organ series. The CD begins with a rare private performance of Zorn alone in the church exploring and stretching the organ’s capabilities. For the evening performance, A Pilgrimage Through Hell, Zorn’s dear friend and colleague of over thirty years John Medeski joins as his organ assistant, and the two of them literally pull out all the stops!

Josh Johnson’s latest solo record, Unusual Object is a world of sound. His fantastically processed saxophone and subtle samples and grooves give this work a sort of cyberpunk ambient jazz feel that occasionally crosses into realms akin to classic Warp Records and Jon Hassell’s dreamworld tonalities. But however fantastical and dreamlike Unusual Object may be, these qualities only serve to bring the listener closer to Johnson, to his breath, his sense of song. What, after all, could be more intimate than sitting inside someone’s fantasies and dreams?
Johnson is a highly in-demand collaborator, working often with Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, Carlos Niño and more. He produced and played on Meshell Ndegeocello’s Grammy-nominated The Omnichord Real Book and worked for many years as musical director for Leon Bridges. He’s appeared on recordings by Broken Bells, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Harry Styles and his playing shines brilliantly on the Jeff Parker ETA Quartet’s Mondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy. Johnson is an indelible part of the Los Angeles scene that gave shape to André 3000’s audaciously transcendent New Blue Sun. But Johnson is no mere supporting character.
The spare but endlessly engaging Unusual Object, a work of futuristic jazz and modern composition, will appeal to fans of everything from Floating Points to Plaid to Ornette Coleman.

sentiment is a meditation of the poignant emotional terrains of loneliness, nostalgia, sentimentality, guilt, and sex. The album’s narrative arc is guided by delicate musical gestures and artistic vulnerability, audaciously synthesizing disparate and unexpected influences. claire rousay is a singular artist, known for challenging conventions in experimental and ambient music forms. rousay masterfully incorporates textural found sounds, sumptuous drones and candid field recordings into music that celebrates the beauty in life’s banalities. Her music is curatorial and granular in detail, deftly shaped into emotionally affecting pieces. rousay’s vocals and guitar take center stage on sentiment. Her intimate, diaristic lyrics contrast with her mechanical-inflected vocal effects, emphasizing a powerful desire for connection, a deep yearning and a lingering sense of separation.
The spare guitar playing and laconic tempo both drive the songs and exude a sense of resignation. Her delicate mastery of nuance draws on her explorative musical past that she, with sincerity and admiration, seamlessly interweaves into her adventurous textures and distinctive compositions. “I want to belong to the worlds and communities I look up to. Same as someone using a Fender guitar or dressing like Kurt Cobain. Emulate your heroes,” says rousay. The album balances the poetic soul of her influences with a documentarian heart, rousay capturing moments of her life while living alone in houses across the country, learning to play guitar, and reconnecting with pop music. Her innate ability to conjure pure feeling from sound derives from her delightful embrace of pop forms, the vulnerability found in field recordings, minimalistic arrangements and innovative sound choices. sentiment is blissfully, achingly melancholic, and an undeniably sensual listening experience.

A Chaos Of Flowers is an album that builds on their ferocious 2023 album nature morte. BIG|BRAVE’s music has been described as massive minimalism. Their fusillades of textural distortion and feedback emphasize their music’s frayed edges as much as its all-encompassing weight. The potency of the trio’s work is their singular artistry combining elements of traditional folk techniques and a modern deconstruction of guitar music. Gain, feedback, and amplitude are essential. For A Chaos Of Flowers guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie drew heavily on the poems of artists whom Wattie found kinship in, their words resonant with experiences of those often sidelined by cultural norms. “I discovered that most poems from folk traditions or in the public domain seem to be by men – to which I could not quite relate. In my search, I rediscovered some of my favorite works and poets,” says Wattie. Guitarist Mathieu Ball and drummer Tasy Hudson help Wattie shape poetry into pieces as dense and impenetrable as they are vulnerable. BIG|BRAVE achieve their colossal sound through minimalist approaches, a deft understanding of dynamics and an inventive employment of percussion and distortion. The trio reconceptualize what it is to be heavy or minimal, challenging perceptions with their illumination of painfully overlooked perspectives. Guest guitarist Marisa Anderson lends earthen, blues-inflected atmospheres to the album, where guitarist Tashi Dorji and saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi amplify the squall. Working closely with frequent collaborator and producer/engineer Seth Manchester, the internal tumult of Wattie’s voice rings out in warbles, haunting echoes, and unearthly harmonies across bold immense walls of distortion. BIG|BRAVE have collaborated with metal monsters The Body on a previous Thrill Jockey release, Leaving None But Small Birds, and have toured internationally with bands like SUMAC, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, SUNN O))), and Lingua Ignota. As they continue to ascend in their journey as pioneers in the contemporary metal scene, it’s safe to say that BIG|BRAVE are here to stay.

BIG|BRAVE have toured the world relentlessly, including recent sets at Festival Adverso, Roadburn Festival, Donaufestival, and Supersonic Festival, performing alongside the likes of Liturgy, SUMAC, SUNN O))), Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and more. The band will tour throughout Europe & the UK this Spring and North America in late summer.
“...dense, layered, climactic, flaring with harmonics and rising up into a crushing wave of immense sound. If the immediate reaction is catharsis or release, that’s to be expected—this is music to purge the soul—but there’s also a great deal of subtlety within such a powerful package. Including a rare moment of chord-progression groove. Here’s where one of the best bands in North America only keeps getting better.” - Treble, Best albums of 2023
“If there’s one truth about BIG|BRAVE’s nature morte, it’s that beauty exists in the darkest of places.” - Exclaim, Best albums of 2023
A Chaos of Flowers is available in CD and LP formats, with a limited number of Clear Pink LPs available. All LP versions include a digital download card.
BIG|BRAVE are represented by Lauren Barley of Rarely Unable in the UK & EU, and Stephanie Marlow of Another Side PR in North America.
BIG|BRAVE previously collaborated with groundbreaking duo The Body on the Thrill Jockey release Leaving None But Small Birds
A Chaos of Flowers was recorded and produced by Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets (Mdou Moctar, The Body, Liturgy, Lingua Ignota)
“BIG|BRAVE are the sound of the raw unconscious, turned up loud.” -Pitchfork
“
BIG|BRAVE are a band whose career thus far has been marked by poise, glyph-like inscrutability and a startling degree of control...with the trio marshalling huge pillars of glimmering, prismatic sound as they explore space and dynamic while pressing forward into realms that are both stately and crushingly, achingly sad.” - The Quietus

“The thing that's always set toe apart from its technically minded peers is its ability to tell short, concise stories — ecstatic, noodly, complex pop songs that unfold in less than five minutes.”
-NPR
toe is a Japanese music group long revered in post-rock circles, while their song structures and dynamics have taken on elements from all styles of music, ranging from math-rock, jazz, pop, and R&B.
toe is composed of Kashikura Takashi on drums, Mino Takaaki on guitar, Yamane Satoshi on bass guitar, and Yamazaki Hirokazu on guitar. The band has formally played with this lineup since their inception in 1998.
The vast majority of the music is instrumental and features the swift, agile drumming of Takashi. The band is also known for melodic, clean guitar, often employing the juxtaposition of electric and acoustic. While the compositions feature the repetition of typical rock motifs, the subtle changes in beat and rhythm form a unique rhythmic dialect. The band has consistently expanded their sound throughout their musical tenure by incorporating singing, rhodes piano, mallet percussion, and electronic production elements.

Nick & Astro are reunited as Potatohead People on this sweaty teaser 7” for their latest album Eat Your Heart Out. On “Paradise”, the boys have hotly tipped Canadian artist Diamond Café on for vocals. Diamond delivers a stunning vocal performance on this early 80s influenced slice of digital sex funk that comes in somewhere between Sade, El Debarge and Prefab Sprout. The man describes his music as “bathing in a cloud of honey on a very foggy night“, and we couldn’t agree more. On the flipside, Nick Wisdom dubs out the original, flexing the bassline’s muscles with additions of swirling synth work and little bites of keyboard funk. The 7” is out worldwide on April 19th and “Eat Your Heart Out” hits everywhere on May 10th.

Driven by the joy of collaborating with friends, a sense of creative freedom, and a desire to be spontaneous, today
Klô Pelgag, Joseph Mihalcean and Samuel Gougoux unveil Sieste sur l’oreille droite, a four-song EP available now on all digital platforms via Secret City Records.
The project is not the result of a long reflection, quite the opposite. It’s the first draft of a remote composition process. The three artists sent songs to each other, each person adding what they wanted, then there were no second thoughts or fine-tuning. The songs were simply sent away to be mixed, as is.
Klô Pelgag is a renowned singer-songwriter who shares her quirky, authentic world with the public. Her three albums have won several awards. She follows her creative inspiration freely and regularly performs on stage.
Composer, arranger, guitarist and producer Joseph Mihalcean has been making his mark on the music scene since 1997. He has worked closely with many of Quebec's leading artists, including Ariane Moffatt, Stéphanie Lapointe, Safia Nolin, Beyries, Pierre Lapointe, Daniel Bélanger and Marie-Pierre Arthur. He released his first self-titled album in 2021, with a second to follow shortly.
Samuel Gougoux is a Montreal-based drummer and composer. His work is defined by his experimental way of playing and recording. He is best known for his contribution to the bands Corridor, N Nao, Victime, and Kee Avil.

Under the Bridge 2 is a double LP, containing 20 brand new tracks. There is a huge range of material here, from intense, dark chamber pop to dense shoegaze to out-and-out indiepop. Exciting new groups are unveiled: The Gentle Spring (a new project by Michael Hiscock of The Field Mice); Vetchinsky Settings (a collaboration between Mark Tranmer and James Hackett of The Orchids); and Mystic Village (which features new songs by Robert Cooksey of The Sea Urchins). You will also see familiar starry names like Even As We Speak, The Orchids and Secret Shine - bands whose line-ups have remained mostly unchanged since the 1990s.
Under The Bridge 2 is available as vinyl double LP, CD and digital download. It will not be on streaming sites. CDs and LPs include a 24-page illustrated colour booklet.

It’s been four years since the world heard any new music from our heroes in psych -punk-power duo The Lovely Eggs. Four long years since the release of their Number 1 Independent Chart topper, ‘I Am Moron’. But it’s not like they’ve been lazy, oh no. They made their own TV series EGGS TV and hosted it on YouTube, they dueted with Iggy Pop, piled into their van and played a load of sold out gigs and festivals, spent two years fighting to save Lancaster Music Co-Op (a community rehearsal rooms and recording st udio where they live), and then they got their heads down and wrote a new album… Due in May, the new Lovely Eggs album was recorded by the band at home in Lancaster with production work from Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann. They flew to America in December 2023 to mix the album in Fridmann’s studio in upstate New York and we’ll all get the chance to hear the first results of these sessions when the band will unveil the album’s first single, ‘My Mood Wave’.
‘My Mood Wave’ has an uplifting contemporary feel, haunted by a West Coast retro vibe that pulses and shimmers with a gorgeously addictive melody that will float around your head for days. Although the single will be released digitally on February 9th, the re will also be a physical 7” with the customary mind -bulging artwork from Casey Raymond, and an exclusive track tantalisingly titled ‘Crab Shell’ on the flipside. The 7” will be released on Aquamarine transparent vinyl and in true Lovely Eggs style.
Tracklist: A. My Mood Wave B. Crab Shell
7”Available on vinyl LP & CD (with extra tracks). Robin Way has been making psychedelic music for decades under the name Oak Acetator. Mostly home recorded, Oak Acetator’sworld of sound encompasses an intoxicating mix of psychedelia, punk, space rock and pop , with the emphasis strongly on hallucinogenic psych.
‘Power Trip’ is Robin’s seventh album, his previous six coming out on the hallowed Dig The Fuzz label, though strangely, none of his work appears on Discogs! Robin wrote, produced and played everything on ‘Power Trip’ in his Folkestone attic studio, and it is a work of crazed brilliance. Respected musician and writer Louis Wiggett summed itup succinctly when he said of Power Trip‘Oh, that bonkers genius from Folkestone, can’t get enough of it. So good, almost sounds like a cosmic Stooges with synths and dea dpan humour. Love it!’And he’s absolutely right. Robin exudes his unique, very British style from the first moment to the last, sounding at times like Johnny Rotten backed by Hawkwind, but with touches of Gong and Krautrock thrown in for good measure, but really just like himself. It’s a total joy to be able to put this deranged masterpiece out on Blue Matter. We adore it, and we hope you will too.

What can you say about the bass playing (and way more) legend that is Ade Shaw? During a long and mindaltering career, Ade has played with many outfits, most notably psych warlords Hawkwind, for whom he provided his trademark basslines for several years i n the mid 70s. He has also played with Atomic Rooster (albeit briefly), Magic Muscle, Rustic Hinge, The Hawklords, Keith Christmas, Mike Moorcock’s Deep Fix and many more.
More recently, (well, the last 30 years actually!) he has been the bass player in The Bevis Frond. For the last year or two, however, he has had to stand down from touring and gigging for personal reasons, but happily this has not prevented him from recording a new album. So it is with great pride and delight that we are now able to release ‘A Dark Reflection’ on Blue Matter. Eleven brand Adrian Shaw new songs ranging from out and out psychedelia, through rock to even a splash of lilting balladry. With Ade playing all the instruments bar a couple of guest appearances from Nick Saloman & Bari Watts, this is the Ade Shaw album we’ve all been waiting for. It’s a real stormer, and it’s a great privilege to be able release it on our label. Give it a listen & hope fully you’ll see what we mean.

PREGOBLIN II is a strange name for a debut album. For the artist who created it, Alex Sebley aka PREGOBLIN, its astonishingly heartfelt and brilliantly catchy assemblage of songs is the culmination of a tortuous genesis period. Its release finally, he hope s, will usher in a fresh, more positive chapter for him, a sequel to all the misery and bullshit up to this point – hence the title. The creative journey to this point has been labyrinthine and frequently painful. As far back as the early ’10s, Sebley was registering his embryonic talent alongside Lias and Nathan Saoudi in The Saudis, the chaotic pre -Fat White Family ensemble where he played guitar and coauthored raw, post-punk material including FWF’s breakthrough tune ‘Touch The Leather’. PREGOBLIN recei ve a healthy 50,000 plays a month on Spotify. Previous singles include: Combustion which to date has amassed 2.2M streams and was dubbed ‘Single of the year’ last year in The Quietus.
“ PREGOBLIN II’s genre-straddling dexterity and melodic riches mark it out as a loser classic fit to rank alongside Beck and Daniel Johnston. The tunes are memorable and the execution’s forward -facing and inspired” ★★★★ MOJO MAGAZINE

Serving up eleven tracks of rhythmic garage -psych goodness, ‘Boots N Cats’ is the third full -length from Melbourne outfit Beans and the first of two albums set for release in 2024. The long -awaited follow-up to 2018’s ‘Babble’ and 2020’s ‘All Together Now’, it’s a record that finds Beans frontman (and The Murlocs drummer) Matt Blach putting percussion at centre -stage. “I’ve always wanted to make a drum-based album, dedicated around the beat first and then everything else follows”, Blach says, explaining his desire to explore “different production approaches, like hip-hop and crunched drums, and show an admiration and appreciation for the likes of The Meters, Wu-Tang and James Brown” as much as the acid -soaked 60s/70s rock you’d expect. What emerges from the beat-first approach on ‘Boots N Cats’ charts mutant garage -rock boogies ('Groove', 'Silhouette') and festival tent psychedelia ('Haunted', 'Dreaming Daisy'), by way of blissed -out funk instrumentals ('One To Four', 'Siamese Blundstone'). The line is constantly skirted between a loose, carefree vibe and interesting, meticulous musicianship – never falling into the trap of taking itself too seriously. It’s a sunny kaleidoscope of chugging guitars, driving bass-lines, soaring organs and warm, echo -soaked vocals – driven always by the tightly -wound rhythms and grooves that Blach has been in pursuit of since he was a kid: “The title of the album comes from me learning drums from my dad. He had a background of German heritage and during lessons would jokingly say ‘nein, boot’n’cats’n’ like a simple 1,2,3,4.”

In October 2022, Headswim reformed for a one off show in Camden to mark the launch of their freshly reissued cult classic debut album, Flood. The reformation and reissue is one of the heroic stories of the internet. Stories that are all too rare in these times. Through the power of a hardcore, (still) hungry fanbase the band were coaxed out of retirement, into the rehearsal studio and into The Underworld to perform the album in its entirety to aforementioned hungry fans. The ex -Sony label mites, Headswim teamed up with indie upstarts Trapped Animal to reissue Flood to sate the clamours of their fanbase. The album has been lovingly mixed by the band's original live engineer, Andy Shillito - and the results are something else. The band played Flood through in order start to finish, with extended sections to fav bangers Dead and Stinkhorn, unique and never to be repeated. The encore includes an earth shattering performance of the bands top 20 hit Tourniquet. Presented on deluxe double gatefold vinyl pressed on 180GSM available in classic black and CD 6 Panel Digipak, the inlay is full of crowd photos from the event. Many people spoke of the show being one of the greatest gigs of their life in the days after...could this be one of the universe's great live albums?

Étrange Hiver (Strange Winter) is UK songwriter, Tom McRae's 9th studio album. An exquisite collection of original duets with renowned French artists, such as Keren Ann, Chien Noir, Alex Beaupain, Clou and more. McRae decided to collaborate on these 11 new songs with various artists as a way of acknowledging his deep love of French music, and deepen his relationship with mainland Europe, following Britain’s disastrous decision to leave the EU. Tom’s debut album went Gold in France in 2001, selling over 60,0 00 copies, and he has divided his time between Paris and Wiltshire since 2021.
Says Tom: “I grew up being intrigued by classic French songs. Before streaming services made all music readily available, only the huge crossover pop songs made it across the channel, but while my friends were listening to Vanessa Paradis, I was listening to Serge Gainsbourg. It seemed exotic, adventurous, and to be from another planet, let alone a country only 21 miles away from my own.” During Covid, McRae released a single with his Belgian friend, Wannes Cappelle, a reworking of one of Tom’s songs in Eng lish and West Vlaams, as well as an album of duets with a Welsh artist, Lowri Evans. Both projects sparking his interest in collaboration with other artists. “It’s not been a great time to be British since 2016”, says McRae. “We’ve become politically, econ omically and culturally isolated since Brexit - and I want to show that I feel more of a European than simply just an English person.” “But mostly this album, Étrange Hiver, is about beautiful songs, some in English, some in French. Sung as duets with friends (some established artists, as well as some new or undiscovered voices) and creating 11 little emotional moments in a crazy world. Some cinematic, some more intimate and personal, all of the songs addressing the important things in life: love, loss, political populism, impending climate collapse… written at a time when it feels as if the world may never escape from this long, strange winter.“

Garrett T Capps is one bad mofo. GTC is a real hombre. He makes cowboy kraut with his band NASA Country & also lots of Tex-Mex rock n' roll. He is San Antonio's resident cosmic country gonzo honky tonk weirdo freak! And he is a national treasure in Holla nd. He can usually be found at The Lonesome Rose, the bar he owns in the city he was born in. And now you can hear his iconic debut album, Y Los Lonely Hipsters, on vinyl on Cow Pie Recordings. Garrett T. Capps and his band, The Only Hipsters, recorded and released the nine-track L.P back in 2016. Now, for the first time ever on vinyl, this album can be heard on our limited edition queso splatter and nacho orange colorways. “It’s good to change up the diet here and there, but I felt strongly that sticking t o menudo in the studio would help us achieve the acoustic terroir we were after,” said Capps. “The Only Hipsters and I are all San Antonio guys, and I wanted the music to reflect that. Tex -Mex in the left ear and T-bone steaks in the right ear.” With Songs like “Born in San Antone,” Capps and The Only Hipsters hope to serve up a solid portion of South Texas timbre, complete with heavy steel guitar, accordion, violin, acoustic and electric guitars, organ, bass and drums in various arrangements. This record holds an esteemed spot in Texas cosmic -country releases.
