RUI GABRIEL COMPASSION
The inviting and perceptive songs on Rui Gabriel’s debut LP Compassion all tackle growing up. It’s about how the older you get, your priorities shift, friendships evolve, and responsibilities become inescapable. For Gabriel, the Indiana-based, Venezuela-born artist and co-founder of the acclaimed band Lawn, the changes in his own life inspired him to write a solo full-length that sounds like nothing the indie rock journeyman has done before. Across 10 vibrant tracks that combine ethereal pop with slacker-rock and piano-driven dance music, it’s a galvanizing showcase of personal growth and the grace you give yourself to push forward.
Work on Compassion started in 2018 when Gabriel was living in New Orleans. “I was living a pretty teenage life in many ways,” says Gabriel. “I worked at a pizza restaurant and would just go to shows or parties. I wasn’t doing anything other than music. I didn’t have many responsibilities.” The songs he was working on at the time—tracks that didn’t fit Lawn but Gabriel still liked—initially went unfinished. But as Gabriel’s life changed, so did his songwriting and his desire to see his ideas through. “When I was writing lyrics, I was settling down with my partner and about to become a dad,” says Gabriel. “I was making choices about my life that contradicted the existence I had before. I had a different set of priorities.”
The songs on Compassion deal with youthful carelessness (“Dreamy Boys”) and coming face-to-face with newfound responsibilities (“Change Your Mind”). It’s consistently a biting, observant look at getting older thanks to Gabriel’s unique perspective as a South American immigrant who’s lived across the United States for the past 13 years. “When you are Hispanic, English isn’t your first language, and you’re in a music scene with a bunch of white people, you’re going to stand out a little bit,” he says. On “Church of Nashville,” “Hey, Leonard Cohen is singing poems by the gentrified alley” he humorously aims at scene pretension and industry gatekeepers.
Compared to Gabriel’s work with Lawn, where he writes frenetic post-punk songs and yells, for Compassion he explores more straightforward pop sensibilities and showcases his singing voice. “I wanted to do a solo record to prove to myself that I could sing,” says Gabriel. Take the meditative, piano-based lead single “Target,” which is inspired by Dido and finds Gabriel gorgeously harmonizing with singer Kate Teague. He reaches similar infectiousness on the sunny rocker “Summertime Tiger,” which guests Stef Chura. Co-produced by Gabriel and Nicholas Corson (The Convenience, Video Age), Compassion is consistently warm, generous, colorful, and adventurous.
“Compassion is a record about change,” says Gabriel. “It’s a coming-of-age record but for somebody who’s coming of age into their thirties.”

For anyone who ever knew they were watching the world’s greatest band in that specific time and place, we bring you evidence of Royal Headache’s live performances in America in the 2010s.
Royal Headache consisted of Shogun (vocals), Law (guitar), Joe (bass) and Shortty (drums). They hailed from Sydney at a pretty ripe time for bands from Australia to make international headways. They came to the States four times. Kicking off the East Coast leg of their 2012 American tour, they made a stop off at the vaunted WFMU studios in Jersey City, where they recorded the live set for Terre T’s Cherry Blossom Clinic program, comprising side A of this release. As was customary, these guys simply turning on their amps generated a cyclone of bracing, scratched-up noise pop, lifted to even higher peaks with Shogun’s vocals, emotionally soaring out of traps and circumstances to push an already careening band over the top and off the edge. Mostly comprised of material from their first album, Royal Headache debuted “High” on this show, and closed with “Stand and Stare,” a rarity recorded for a 7” single.

Side B moves the chains to 2015, and a rainy August night in Chicago, when Royal Headache was making even more significant inroads to the ears of savvy, with-it fans in America, Europe, and Japan, as well as back home. On this night they graced the Empty Bottle with a set focused on their second album High, and a blues ballad called “So Low” that makes its recorded debut here. Royal Headache had no issues meeting the spotlight on this evening, as this board recording attests. They were on fire, smoked the sold-out room sideways and back, and if the FMU session got in your face, this set grabs you by the collar, taking everything society had thrown at or accoladed them with and distilling it into piercingly melodic, throttling rock ‘n’ roll.
If you can play like this, do it. If you can sing like this, step up. The world has been without Royal Headache for far too long, and unless they return, proof such as what you got here will be all you have. Take this and let it push you into whatever needs to happen next.

She might be using her natural singing voice, but it often feels as if she is actually inhabiting her teenage self. Somehow in the mystical act of singing, she has morphed into the girl she once was. Underpinning everything is Russell’s gift for emptiness and depth. Reared on 80s hip hop, he once claimed that the word ‘spartan’ guided his creative process. If the singer is a tightrope-walker, Russell is the air beneath, that yawning space that makes us realise how daring the act of tightrope-walking is, and how miraculous. Russell’s soundscapes, so thin and yet so rich, are the perfect setting for Morton’s delicate vocals and fierce feeling.

Open Symmetry is the first recording for the Erased Tapes label from Tristan Perich His work is inspired by the aesthetic simplicity of math, physics and code. The WIRE Magazine describes his compositions as "an austere meeting of electronic and organic." Perich’s work coupling 1-bit electronics with traditional forms in both music and visual art has been presented around the world, from Sonar and Ars Electronica to the Museum of Modern Art and bitforms gallery. He has been commissioned by the LA Philharmonic, So Percussion, Yarn/Wire and more. He received a 2011 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. He was a featured artist at Sonár 2010 in Barcelona, and in 2009, Austria’s Prix Ars Electronica awarded him the Award of Distinction for his composition Active Field (for ten violins and ten-channel 1-bit music).

After their initial self titled record, recorded live and performed mainly on the street, The Builders and the Butchers entered the studio with acclaimed and beloved Portland musician and producer Chris Funk to record the bands next collection of songs. An album to be titled Salvation is a Deep Dark Well
The spirit of the Builders has always been, and always will be, inclusion and collaboration. From the early shows on the street, to passing out instruments in clubs, the early days were always about how many people would be “in the band” on any given night. The Builders took this spirit of inclusion into the studio where they invited some of their favorite musicians and best friends to perform on Salvation is a Deep Dark Well.
Over 50 different musicians perform on the album, including the Portland Flash Choir, a gospel choir, Portland Cello Project, string quartets, as well as horn sections. This is on top of the band members who played over 30 different instruments themselves.
These performances were masterfully orchestrated by Chris Funk and then mixed with care by the esteemed Tucker Martine. Resulting in an album that is not only lush and full, but also immediate, vital and dark.

On The Healer, the new full length from the Northwestbased trio of guitarist and vocalist Aaron Turner (ISIS, Old Man Gloom) bassist Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Botch) and drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) the group deepens its multi-faceted exploration into the parallel experiences of creation and destruction. Over the course of 4 tracks in 76 minutes, SUMAC present a sequence of shifting movements which undergo a constant process of expansion, contraction, corruption and regrowth.
This musical methodology reflects the thematic nature of the record - narratives of experiential wounding as gateways to empowerment and evolution, both individual and collective. The group’s interpolation of melody, drone, improvisation, and complex riffing becomes a transmogrifying act embodying the depth of human experience. In its highest aspiration it mirrors our ability to endure mortal and spiritual challenges, through which we may emerge with an increased capacity for understanding, empathy, love of self and others. Dismal though the subterranean pits of The Healer may at first appear, from them can be felt the unwavering determination to embrace life, acknowledge interdependence, and honor the gift of existence.

Aseethe, the trio of guitarist Brian Barr, drummer Eric Diercks, and bassist Noah Koester, carve their own path in the world of heavy music. A singular blend of seismic weight, mesmeric drone, and gripping tension is the Midwestern band’s musical signature. Driven by an exploratory ethos, Aseethe warp sounds into emotionally potent songs that are as detailed as they are immense. The Cost is an album shadowed by devastating losses, a visceral study in aftermaths, centered around how life moves forward after personal and universal traumas. Recorded by acclaimed producer/engineer Sanford Parker (Pelican, Eyehategod, Yob, Voivod) at Electrical Audio in Chicago, The Cost is more focused and elaborate than anything the band have crafted before, expanding Aseethe’s dynamic palette with more nuance and transforming their battering sound into cathartic arcs.
A deft balance of abrasive textures surrounding a meditative core is a hallmark of Aseethe’s sound, and on The Cost these qualities are amplified to the extreme. Says Barr, “It’s still down-tuned and heavy, but we were deliberately trying to make a record that uses our own musical language to make something that was representative of the musicians we are.”
On The Cost, Aseethe’s detailed textural movements and punishing guitar passages each carry considerable emotional resonance. On 17 March 1978, a mere six months after the release of their self-titled debut, The Boys second album “Alternative Chartbusters” was released (once again, produced by Dangerfield & Steel). As AllMusic recognises, “Alternative Chartbusters” was way ahead of its time, a buried treasure that only got dusted off much later: “Condemned at the time for offering up little more than a straight carbon copy of its predecessor, the second Boys’ album has since ascended to the pantheon of power pop greats, a combination of the band's own inestimable position at the forefront of what, by early 1978, was already a burgeoning movement, and their seemingly effortless grasp of the rudiments of, indeed, a great pop song.” Along with the Sex Pistols, Clash and the Damned, The Boys were part of the first wave of the mid-1970’s UK punk explosion. ‘SIVE’ is a lovingly crafted collection of heartfelt songs by Michele Ducci, focusing primarily on piano and Michele’s soft, soulful vocals Michele was the ‘M’ in the electro-pop duo ‘M+A’, who released two albums on Monotreme Records, the second of which, ‘These Days’, earned the band a place in The Guardian’s ‘best new bands of 2014’ list and saw them win the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and perform live on the Pyramid Stage, as well as at the Venice Biennale.
The duo then formed a new project, Santii, which involved several Hip Hop artists including Rejjie Snow, Mick Jenkins and Music Producer Supah Mario (Drake, Young Thug), releasing two EPs on Italian label Sugar Records before going their separate ways due to artistic differences.
"I went back to the house where I was born and where I first started playing. After the pandemic I had practically no instruments anymore except a guitar with three strings and a pianola. I needed to make a record that I had never been able to make and that I had always dreamed of making. Something very essential: with the piano and the voice." A set of demos emerged, which he sent to Monotreme Records, with whom he had enjoyed working in the past.
‘SIVE’ encompasses a range of styles, from the dreamy singer/songwriter tones of ‘Feelings’, ‘Here You Are’, and ‘Nonesome’ to the uptempo pop of ‘You Lay the Path’, RnB-infused ‘Just Because’ and percussive Beat poetry of ‘Hic’. Album opener, ’River’, is a poignant ballad that winds along like its title, opening with the quiet intimacy of hushed vocals and piano and detailing the time he desired to leave the music world behind: “They call my name but I’m a river”.

In meteorology, the word Norther refers to a cold wind that blows down from the north. For Liverpool’s Ex-Easter Island Head, it’s also an apt title for the strange and multi-faceted sound of their new album that now descends upon the world at large: ever shifting, a multiplicity of sounds both acoustic and manipulated, and yet one that still moves as part of a single mighty breeze.
At times it might recall the experiments of Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca, the widescreen beauty of The Necks, the relentless experimentation of Arnold Dreyblatt or the boundary-pushing roster of Kompakt Records, yet ultimately this is music that has no direct compare. Each of its six pieces demonstrates a different creative process. On blossoming opener ‘Weather’, whirring motors dance fairy-like atop strings and drums; on the dizzying ‘Magnetic Language’ voices are played back through phones and amplified through pickups made of magnets wrapped in copper wire; the title of ‘Golden Bridges’ refers to the brass rods the band shift beneath the strings of their guitar. All, however, tap to one degree or another into that abiding theme of the weather. Norther is Ex-Easter Island Head’s first studio album since 2016, a time spent on collaborations and one-off performances with everyone from classical musicians and fellow experimentalists to schoolchildren.
“All of the projects we were involved in between 2016 and 2024 have expanded the boundaries of what we do by exposing us to a huge variety of instruments, personalities and ways of working. It's really allowed us to see the purity of making music with a four-piece group,” says the band’s Benjamin D. Duvall. Horsie employs various textures influenced by artists like Four Tet and My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic forms of D’Angelo and Sade, and moments of ambient Americana found in the works of Ry Cooder. Drawing inspiration from Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated regular rehearsals with Ice. He recalled, "I didn't want to mimic Berry, but with seven talented musicians collaborating daily, something unique emerged." The band, residing in Paris and immersed in the African-dominated Barbesse district, began infusing African elements into their music frequently performing with Paris-dwelling Camaroonian and legendary composerManuDibango.
Under the new moniker Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the group's music transitioned to predominantly instrumental compositions, featuring a denser Afro-funk sound. Their inauguralrecordingwiththenewname,'SoulMakossa,'includedacompellingrendition ofDibango'sclassicandtheimpactfulbreakin'Hihache.'Thesubsequentreleaseayear later, 'Malik,' refined their sound with the percussive Afro party jam 'Conga,' the atmosphericvocoderandpiano-ledpiece'Djungi,'andtherobustfunkof'DarkestLight.'

After Sunrise, the new collaboration from Circles Around The Sun and Mikaela Davis reunites the disco cosmonauts and acclaimed harpist for further explorations of the synergy first showcased on the title track of CATS’ 2023 album, Language.
Comprised of two new original compositions, ‘Gloaming Way’ and ‘Moonbow’, and an inspired interpretation of Brazilian legend Sérgio Mendes’ ‘After Sunrise,’ the album features the first appearance of vocals on a Circles Around The Sun recording, sung by Davis. Dirty Three, Ahoy!
Emerging once again from the unending waves crashing upon our fragile time-craft (adrift on the eternal ocean, and taking on water), Dirty Three are a) back, b) tangled in seaweed, rank with saltwater and possessed of three rather ominous thousand-mile stares (at least!), and c) not wasting another minute as nothing is guaranteed. For their first album in over a decade yep, it’s been since 2012’s Toward the Low Sun they flew in, got together and started playing. End of story. What else is there to say or do but that? Music’s their language, their true love; they never stop listening to that. And like the label says, Love Changes Everything
The Dirty Three Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White formed up in Melbourne in 1992, to play with guitar drums and violin or viola, and within a couple years, they’d broken out out of Aust ralia, out of anything else they might have been inside of, to boot and got worldwide. Over the next ten years, they toured over and over the planet, ceaseless like, and cut seven albums out along the way. After this, their unique style of play, fitted together like puzzle pieces, was decoupled, more often than not, and pieced together in many other, fruitful collaborations with many other esteemed talents. Over the past 20 years, they’ve gotten together a few times, renewed the vow, revved the engines and played some shows, or made an album. Like now
These are the sounds of Dirty Three getting up to speed again:
The original fury of their drums/guitar/violin-or-viola power trio, cutting three unique paths through the wild into sudden convergence
Piano-plucked melodies ringing sweetly out over an undulating landscape flowing with guitar, drums, violin or viola, and synths! And broken hills, forests, lakes and deserts. And mountains rising in the distance...
Mercurial shifts in mood; sudden descent from tumult of flights and heights into deep canyons of heart-struck adagio. Equally sudden second-winds, feisty activity in their extremities never really ceasing. Opening depths. Wariness and patience allowing them to get caught up in loops, become ambient, transcend, and then fight their way back in again. Their wild and wandering heart not simply a spry derivative of collective sea legs; a telepathy already old as time evidenced way back in the beginning of their thirty-yearsand-some run.
Such mood! Once desolate fields pouring full of emotion, wandered into, come upon as if by happenstance (but actually sourced by the divining rods in their hands).
All of it everything changed by love and bubbling up with the clarity of just-struck spring water; translucence giving way to muddy gushes of distortion dirty guitar, smears of violin, drums at times pounded upon beyond the microphones’ ability to receive...
And when received, and committed to “tape,” or whatever they used the master could well be carved in plates of amphibole this music has been untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, resequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album. These lot were born to be as weathered as they are today. Time doesn’t matter. They make their gathered wisdom of the ages sing like something new every time. It renews. And Love Changes Everything .

The impetus for this came when Eiko was asked by overseas promoters for a program of live performances backed by visuals. After some thought, she asked Hamaguchi if he would make something for her to use for this purpose. Says Eiko:

Eiko Jim O’Rourke played the guitar and mixed and mastered the recordings when they were done, eliciting further the necessary nuances of atmosphere and mood that one would expect in one Evil Does Not Exist was released last year in Japan and Europe, and has already won several prestigious awards (Best Picture – BFI London Film Festival, Asian Film Awards, Grand Jury Prize – Venice Film Festival, Best Score – Asian Film Awards).

On first listen, it becomes immediately clear that this fusion of Shackleton’s bass-heavy cosmic dread and Six Organs’ ritual folksong makes total sense. Longtime listeners know that both Shackleton and Six Organs of Admittance have been unafraid to pursue their muse into any and all encroaching depth of darkness or outer boundary of potential dissonance in fact, that has always been their default mode, finding more of resonance way out there in the process.
They also share that ol’ maverick psychedelic ritual transcendental music vibe, don’t they? And a fascination with repetition and cycles. And a mutual inspiration drawn from alternative tunings and literature . . . all this considered, it’s been basically inevitable that Ben Chasny and Sam Shackleton would work together.
It took a while for them to find each other and once they did, it was almost eerie, how preordained it felt. When the music started coming, though that’s when it got really eerie. Drag City is excited to present the first ever vinyl pressing of guitarist Lee Underwood ’s under-sung 1988 acoustic guitar opus, California Sigh Lee Underwood had been Tim Buckley ’s stalwart, inspiring, accompanying and being inspired by Buckley as they both navigated a heady set of changes in the late 60s and early 70s. Then, he abruptly stopped working as a professional musician, leaving behind a body of work, that, as noted by Eugene Chadbourne, was the work of “a loner, who didn’t quite march under any one flag whose improvisations involved the level of sophisticated harmonic development one finds in jazz floating as freely as Ornette Coleman.”
If, like us, you ever wondered, “whatever became of that trippy picker from those Buckley records”, then you too missed California Sigh when it first appeared in 1988. Then again, it was easy to miss a cassette-only private press release in the late 80s and highl y likely that Lee’s acoustic guitar-based instrumentals were filed without proper distinction among the avalanche of New Age cassettes in that era. So 35 years later, yet still in time, train your ears on the meditations of California Sigh! As Byron Coley ’s liner notes observe: “The music is guitar-based acoustic instrumental melodicism with a lovely tone and alternately ruminative and jazzy structuring. The playing is generally in the vein of William Ackerman and Alex de Grassi rather than progenitors like Basho and Fahey, although “Lady of the Streams” does display a bit of a Fahey lilt at times. Throughout these pieces there are also flashes of single string runs straight out of the Django Reinhardt playbook. But the overall mood is tranquil reflecting the musical joys Underwood found when surrounded by nature.”
The tenor of the production is transcendent to be sure. It had been years since Lee had moved from L.A. to Northern California, years since he traded the work of writing and recording songs for an editorial position at Down Beat. With his guitar leading the way again, an expansive mood is evident throughout California Sigh. Additionally, Lee had new love in his life the partnership of Sonia Crespi, whose warmth and inspiration shines through all the material. The playing of Chas Smith and Kevin Braheny Fortune, on pedal steel and soprano sax respectively, lend additional colors to Lee’s music on several songs, but it is largely the soulful depth of Lee’s guitar figures, limned by Steve Roach’s synthesizers and the Roach/Underwood co-production, that give dynamic shape and elevation to Lee’s lovely cycle of songs. And now, with this remastered vinyl edition, the air around the instruments both real and implied and the full sonic impact of California Sigh alternately gentle and mighty, like the natural world that inspired it is magnified incomparably.
In the years following the release of California Sigh, Lee wrote and recorded two solo piano CDs, Phantom Light and Gathering Light. Additionally, he wrote Blue Melody: Tim Buckley Remembered, a memoir of their time together, as well as three books of poems, Timewinds (2010), Diamondfire (2016) and Into Light (Poetic Matrix Press, 2021). He continues to live in Northern California.
California Sigh is “dedicated with love and respect” by Lee to his late wife, Sonia Crespi, for the friendship and inspiration she brought.

Drummer Chris Corsano is a tireless collaborator. Among the 150 or so albums that he’s contributed to over the past 25 years, only six have been credited to Chris alone, which makes the existence of The Key (Became The Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away]) a rare instance of Chris going deep on his own vision. Indeed, this album finds him involved in every aspect of the process, from making the string-drums that the music is based upon, to playing all parts of the music, mixing them, and doing the cover art, too! Frankly, we’re surprised Chris didn’t self-release it as well but we’re also psyched that he didn’t. This is a special album, bringing his encompassing focus on free improvisation and noise into a granular fusion with acoustic experiments and ideations of hard rock riffing and the post-punk sound.
In Chris Corsano’s collaborations over time with Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee, Dredd Foole, Michael Flower, Paul Dunmall, Bill Orcutt, Nate Wooley, Mette Rasmussen, C. Spencer Yeh, Ben Chasny & Sir Richard Bishop (as individuals, and together as Rangda), Bill Nace, Wally Shoup, Evan Parker and dozens of other players, it’s clear the vibe may get intense/heavy/OUT. Accessing this place, in itself, is an incredible calling but on The Key (Became The Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away]), the intensity radiates entirely from inside Chris’s process, in conversation with himself. And that’s something that hit a bit different once he was done making it.
The pieces here were largely built out of Chris’s string drum playing, utilizing a setup he’s created involving a silicone string, stretched across a snare drum with a bridge. When the string is hit, it resonates the drum a conception similar to that of the banjo, but with more of a bass tone. Several songs focus on Chris playing a bass string drum with a full kit, while the basic parts of two other pieces (“I Don’t Have Missions,” “The Full-Measure Wash Down”) implied possibilities for full band arrangements which Chris was compelled to respond to himself. This isn’t the first time he’s made overdubbed music, Corsano-on-Corsano style jump in the Bandcamp time machine to hear the Corsano “Band”s 2010 release, High and Dry but it did have the effect of feeling unusually personal.
The process of exploration and discovery uniquely informed and shaped the music, implying not just sounds and passages, but structures of songs themselves. In addition to the several synapse-clearing full-band arrangements, Chris’s solo drumkit performances with the bass string drum take flight, the shape of their movement based on interaction with its marvelous acoustics. Further, Chris’s guitar playing on “I Don’t Have Missions,” a semi-unconscious attempt to Frankenstein together the influences of several of his six-string collaborators, locates a new awesome space in his music facilitated through and furthering the sounds found playing the string drum.
All the results on the tape, when listened back, found a higher order, transcending sequences of experimentation and technique, becoming much more than the sum of an internal conversation, standing together as a set of insistently compelling pieces of a whole. And so they became The Key (Became the Important Thing [& Then Just Faded Away]). They unlocked something in Chris Corsano and us too. Now it’s your turn…

Jeffrey Silverstein’s new release Roseway is named after his quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Northeast Portland. While half of the tracks are pastoral ambient instrumentals and half are plainspoken lyrical numbers with ample twang and groove, each captures Silverstein’s striking comfort with his voice, his process, and his role as a bandleader. It’s New Age for the everyman: more cosmic than country and more accessible than esoteric.
This EP picks up where his breakthrough 2023 full-length Western Sky Music left off. A reinvention for Silverstein that traded homespun solo recordings for an expansive full-band sound, the LP was acclaimed by Aquarium Drunkard, The Portland Mercury, and more. On Roseway, he reunites with drummer Dana Buoy (Akron/Family) and bassist Alex Chapman and enlists pedal steel player Connor Gallaher (Anna St. Louis, Lana Del Rey), and recorded with Ryan Oxford (Y La Bamba, Rose City Band)
The vinyl version of Roseway features a b-side that includes the first pressing of Silverstein’s 2021 EP Torii Gates. Taken together, these two EPs feel like a bridge to each other: a document of an artist cresting the hill of his process and vision.

Joanna Gemma Auguri releases her new album "Hiraeth" on 28th June via Duchess Box Records
Joanna Gemma Auguri is a Berlin musician, songwriter and actress. In the various stages of her musical solo and band projects, she incorporates influences from folk, ambient avant-garde music.Being five years old she escaped with her parents from Poland, which was under martial law, and had to learn at an early age what uprooting means. This experience is reflected in her music as an expression of personal sadness, compassion, but also despair about the state of the world.2021 she released her solo debut "11" on her own label Lavender Music. It was mainly characterized by accordion, zitherand her vocals. Her new album "Hiraeth" was recorded at Candy Bomber Studios in Berlin by Ingo Krauss, with a large number of musicians. Besides choir, double bass, lap steel guitar, drums, cello, horns , different organs and keyboards her original instruments accordion and zither still shine through from time to time. Joanna's voice sits unmistakable on top of the majestic, nearly monumental compositions which despite their richness always stay basic and delicate. "Hiraeth" is an untranslatable Welsh word that describes the longing for a home, a place or a feeling that no longer exists or never existed.The album will be released June 2024 on Duchess Box from Berlin.

OVERVIEW:
A deep, zouk/electronic dancehall crossover track from Cameroonian artist Maréchal Papillon, including a brand new dub version from Canadian producer Poirier
Ferdinand ‘Maréchal’ Papillon was part of the makossa wave that moved from Cameroon to France and across the African diaspora in the 80s and 90s, bringing the sounds of rhythms of Douala and Yaoundé to the clubs and dancefloors of Paris. Although best known for his Sakissa style - his own uptempo take on the makossa of Cameroon - Papillon also regularly featured zouk and reggae influenced tracks on his albums, combining Caribbean and African influences into a unique sound that has stood the test of time.
‘Moulongo’ originally appeared on Papillon’s highly sought after 1995 album “Homme fort….je suis sérieux” and was recorded at Studio de la Madeleine in Paris. The Moulongo session features a who’s who of the Paris scene of the time - Aladji Touré and Toto Guillaume from Cameroon as well as Congolese guitar greats Ngoma Lokito and Nene Tchacou - and combines dancehall, zouk and makossa elements for a pan-African dancefloor sureshot.

OVERVIEW:
Cult soca disco 12”, produced by Leston Paul and originally released in 1984 - now available in full vocal and instrumental versions for the first time in 40 years.
Barbara Hernandez was working as a backing singer for Kool and the Gang in New York at the time the track was recorded, and the session featured their horn section as well as a who’s who of the Trinidad music scene for what would be Barbara’s only solo release. Suffering from poor distribution at the time of release, the 12” failed to make waves at the time but is now lovingly remastered and cut loud, a sure fire dancefloor filler.

On his 2023 release Arc Of Day Danny Paul Grody (solo, Tarentel, The Drift) gathered an ensemble of musicians and gave us compositions that conjured not just bird-like flights but the supportive skeleton of a bird itself - intricate, delicate, but able to carry a body (or a listener) through bright, airy spaces. That same ensemble, since renamed the Danny Paul Grody Duo, now bring us Arc Of Night - a sister collection to Arc Of Day, shaped from core collaborations between Grody and percussionist/drummer Rich Douthit (The Drift) along with additions on select tracks from Trevor Montgomery on electric bass and Chuck Johnson on pedal steel guitar. Though coming from the same musical bones as its sibling album, the darker tones and predominance of electric guitar on Arc Of Night evoke a different aviary figure - the nightbird. There are moments in these pieces that feel like stepping out at twilight as a single nightjar begins its song. Other voices soon answer, inviting us to say goodnight to sleep, to stay with them till sunrise. Other tracks give the feeling of waking at 3 AM - hearing a far off train, the wind, the deep drone of the hour, and above it all the cry of some nightbird hunting for companionship - or prey - in the darkness. There’s terror on Arc Of Night, specifically the terror of not knowing whether one is awake or dreaming, but there is also comfort - the world, however dark, is still there outside the window, outside the ear, and even terror has its place in the flow of things.
Day will come but thankfully not yet.
