The bones of a bird, stripped of flesh and feather, give no sign of the heights and depths a living bird can reach, the lengths it can travel, or the songs it can sing. The same is true of the bones of the human hand. For all their strength and delicacy, seeing them skeletal and stark obscures our knowledge of the rhythmic energy with which they engage space, the burdens they can bear, the music they can produce. Yet, in both bird and hand, the foundation of grace and motion remain. Music above all else proves this to be true. To experience a guitarist playing is to experience the hand taking flight.
This flight is the essence of all of Danny Paul Grody’s work. His compositions seem to be the sonic tracings of migrations patterns. They grant us that avian instinct to simply take to air and trust our innate knowledge of the route.
Arc Of Day is Grody’s first collection of new music since his selfreleased Furniture Music II in 2021 and first with Three Lobed Recordings since 2013’s Between Two Worlds. Born of explorations with Rich Douthit on drums & percussion, the album charts a path from grief and isolation to re-emergence, picking up Trevor Montgomery on bass, Chuck Johnson on pedal steel, and Jonathan Seilaff on clarinet along the way. Arc Of Day not only encapsulates the journey from bone to flesh and feather, it renews the listener like birdsong in Spring after the long Winter silence.
PRAISE FOR ARC OF DAY:
- “There’s a kind of spiritual serenity to his solo instrumental guitar work that feels at once gentle and transcendent, evoking American Primitivists such as Robbie Basho and Leo Kottke with occasional full- band arrangements and flute accompaniment ” Jeff Terich, Treble
- “ [Arc of Day] is more about being as present as possible to the only time you really have: the moment you’re in.” Bill Meyer, Magnet

- The first widely-available album of new guitar material by this founding member of Tarentel and the Drift since 2013’s Between Two Worlds (Three Lobed). This is both Grody’s first proper studio album and his first base around multiple musicians, featuring appearances by Chuck Johnson, Rich Douthit, Trevor Montgomery and Jonathan Sielaff.
- 180g black vinyl housed within a jacket bearing new artwork from Billy Joe Miller (with Bandcampenabled download).
- “…as if Brian Eno had cut an LP for John Fahey’s Takoma Records sometime back in the mid-70s…” Tyler Wilcox, Aquarium Drunkard
- “…there are memorable note patterns all over… (Grody’s work), but a deeper impression is left by the way Grody turns them into mantras. His playing stretches time, making even his busiest passages patient and meditative.” Marc Masters, Pitchfork
- “Grody’s guitar roots sometimes reflect traditionalist threads, but often weave in the unconventional: the picking of the West African kora, for example, or plains of New Zealand and New York minimalist drone. His wider musical pursuits know few bounds — electronics, long form improvisation, multiple electric bands. (Grody’s music) is a precise experiment in revised composition, chancing his acoustic playing less towards a melody, and more towards the areas surrounding it.” Charles Sage, Fluid Radio –Experimental Frequencies
- RIYL: Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Daniel Bachman, William Tyler, guitar soli, intricate and thoughtful instrumentals, and/or journeys of the mind.

JERRY DAVID DECICCA’s 5th solo album, NEW SHADOWS, is a Kafkaesque, avant-Americana meditation, surreal and ruminative, featuring singer Rosali Middleman (ROSALI), DAVID HIDALGO and STEVE BERLIN (from LOS LOBOS), guitarist JEFF PARKER, tenor saxophonist JAMES BRANDON LEWIS, trumpeter AQUILES NAVARRO (from IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS) and composer/sound archivist, BRIAN HARNETTY
New Shadows peaks into corners where interior and exterior worlds collide, where miniscule revelations can be found in the darkness of ourselves and our community: lost children, unheard prayers, bugs, money, depression, romantic relationships, regret, and Zoom funerals, all become a lens for self-reflection.
The production (by DON CENTO and JDD) is modeled after DeCicca’s favorite early 80’s albums (Lindsey Buckingham’s Law & Order, ZZ Top’s Afterburner, Robert Palmer’s Clues, Lou Reed’s New Sensations,) while the songs’ architectures and pathos lean more towards Warren Zevon, Townes Van Zandt, and John Prine - all these record-makers and songwriters are embedded in DeCicca’s DNA, having seen them, and in some cases met them after gigs, when his brain was still developing between the ages of 13-19 years old.
The virtual collaborators are the musicians who kept DeCicca company on his stereo while isolated in his rural town, Bulverde, TX: Brian Harnetty’s Many Hands, Rosali’s No Medium, Irreversible Entanglements’ Who Sent You?, James Brandon Lewis’s Jessup Wagon, Jeff Parker’s JP’s Myspace Beats and Suite for Max Brown, and the Los Lobos discography.
New Shadows isn’t so much about DeCicca’s new discoveries, as it is the penumbrous reminder of what’s always been there.

Kiasmos – Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen – are returning, renewed and restored, with II. The triumphant follow-up to their universally acclaimed self-titled debut in 2014, which re-envisioned minimal techno with orchestral flourishes and weightless production. They’d made most of that album in just two weeks; this time it’s been 10 years. The making of II was a test of their friendship, but also testament to how great musical chemistry can always go the distance and be just the same as it ever was.
They worked on a lot of II during the lost year of 2020-2021, including a trip to Ólafur’s studio in Bali. “We spent a month there and wrote a few songs that ended up on the record,” says Janus. The pair sampled traditional Balinese percussion like the gamelan and incorporated Janus’s field recordings of their natural surroundings – the sound of birds, crickets and, on standout track ‘Dazed’, echoing the sunrise over the lush landscape.
Kiasmos have an enviable knack for conveying complex emotions and evocative visuals with instrumental music. But this time they’ve got more experience as producers to draw on. The album’s expansiveness can be linked to Ólafur’s intervening years as a Grammy-nominated composer and prominent soundtracker in film and TV. And they’ve subtly shifted from four-to-the-floor to the frenetic broken beats of UK dance music, experimenting more with BPMs, echoing Janus’s time spent DJing in major venues worldwide. There are still those aching melodies that fans know and love but they’re catchier too: tracks like ‘Laced’ and ‘Bound’ have an irresistible, elastic bounce beneath the ethereal palette.
“We just want to make electronic music that there isn’t so much of right now,” says Janus, “to take you on a great journey that is a little bit unconventional.” “You have to develop into a new space,” Ólafur adds. But they had to impose limits, too, to keep them both on track and make something memorable. Often Ólafur would refuse to move on to the next idea until they’d perfected a chord progression or beat, to help them stay focused and forge, he says, a “deep understanding of what the song is.”
The magic of Kiasmos is also in the cathartic. “II is livelier,” says Janus, “but it still retains the signature Kiasmos style of transitioning from a whisper-quiet ambience to an explosive dance beat that can blow your socks off.”

The very same group that the Mamas & the Papas sang about in “Creeque Alley!” Before each musician found their way to stardom, Mama Cass & Denny Doherty teamed up with future Lovin’ Spoonful guitarist Zal Yanovsky and “Summer Rain” hit songwriter Jim Hendricks to form the Mugwumps! Only lasting eight months, this pop-folk treasure didn’t hit the shelves until after they disbanded and found success a couple of years later.

Joe Pernice has been writing for a long time—most of his life, in fact—and has crafted a remarkable catalog that boldly reinterprets and recasts classic American pop. Who Will You Believe may be his most moving and nuanced album yet; it’s certainly his timeliest. “These songs were all written during the same time period,” he says, “and they all seemed to tap into a mood I was in at the time. I go through spells where I’m a certain way for three or four months. I might be more reticent than usual, or more outgoing. With all of my records—and especially with this one—the songs all feel like they belong together, probably because they all arrived during the same stretch of time.”
In a single six-month stretch he was left reeling from the deaths of three close friends, including David Ber man, poet and songwriter for Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, and Gary Stewart, the Rhino Records co-founder and tireless Pernice Brothers supporter since their first album in 1998. “That was such a bad patch when David and Gary both took their own lives. And my cousin Joe Harvard, who started Fort Apache Studios in Boston and was like a brother to me—he died, too. It was such a tough year. I was thinking about them a lot and watching how divided America had become. I was doing my best to try and take nothing for granted.”
Pernice has been releasing albums for over 25 years. And with age comes a greater patience and an immense appreciation for the act of creation. Who Will You Believe showcases a beautiful balance between such sadness and moments of solemnity with warm humor and camaraderie.

THOM YORKE CONFIDENZA
STREET DATE: July 12, 2024
Thom Yorke composed the original score for Daniele Luchetti’s film Confidenza, an adaptation of the Italian drama based on Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same name, which premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam and will be out in Italian theaters in April 2024.
Confidenza follows Yorke’s previous full-length score work for a narrative film, Luca Guadagnino’s 2018’s Suspiria remake. In 2019 Yorke contributed music to Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn and in 2022 he wrote two original tracks for the series finale of Peaky Blinders.
As of late Yorke has been touring with The Smile, a project with Sons of Kemet Tom Skinner and fellow Radiohead member Jonny Greenwood. The band released their second studio-album Wall Of Eyes this past January. Yorke will set out on a headline solo tour this fall.

Caracoles ushers (GRAMMY-award nominated) Orquesta Akokánʼs unique brand of mambo into the 21st century, imbuing it with the groupʼs signature sense of akokán–a Cuban Yoruba word meaning “from the heart”. Back at the helm are producer and multi instrumentalist, Jacob Plasse and virtuosic pianist, composer and arranger Michael Eckroth - a collaboration that continues to lead Orquestaʼs exploration of the sublime mambo in all its depth and breadth. On this, their third album, they combine talents with Cuban lyricist, singer and composer Kiko Ruiz, who has toured and recorded with Pancho Amatʼs illustrious Estrellas del Buena Vista Social Club as well as having a longstanding history as a singer, composer and arranger with Orquesta Maria Alejandra y Cubanía.
And although Caracoles is of this moment, its raices stretch deep into the past, presenting a glorious return to the iconic grooves of an era indelibly marked by Benny Moré, Perez Prado and Machito in New York bands and Cubaʼs orquestas gigantes of the mid-twentieth century. While some songs are everyday Cuban life story-telling, Ruiz, a tata —priest— informs his lyrics with a Palo Mayombe spirituality propelling the mambo back to its original meaning. Despite being popularized world-wide as a festive, light-spirited, danceable genre, mambo is not to be taken lightly in the Palo Mayombe religion. Mambo is both a song and a prayer, beseeching good spirits to guide oneʼs journey away from darkness. Two of the albumʼs songs —including the title tune— are in this Congo dialect, designed to be impenetrable by the uninitiated. Caracolesʼ fierce, effervescent grooves, Ruiz affirms, can “...vibrate your soul, which is precisely what the world needs right now”. The tunes offer an irresistible invitation to heed the title songʼs invitation, “Cucha mambo que yo emboa montero...este mambo es paʼ ti.” Listen to this story, I bring it to you as a traveling song...This mambo is for you.”

JULIA HOLTER: Never Rarely Sometimes Always (Original
Motion Picture Soundtrack)
STREET DATE: JULY 12, 2024
This 2020 film has already become an indie classic, and it’s taken on a timeliness that its creators could not have foreseen. Teenage Autumn has to flee her rural Pennsylvania town in seach of an abortion, leaving behind her abusive partner, her indifferent parents (singer Sharon Van Etten plays her mother), and her callous community as she embarks on a journey to New York City accompanied by her cousin Skylar. No matter your stance on the subject, Autumn’s harrowing odyssey provokes compassion and contemplation, two states of mind in short supply these days. And accompanying Autumn every step of the way on her journey is the mesmerizing and, at times, achingly sad score by cult favorite composer Julia Holter. So much of the film is made up of shots of Autumn’s face as she attempts to process what is happening to her and around her; seldom has a film score captured a character’s interior monologue with such insight and grace. Never before released in any physical format, we at Real Gone Music are proud to present the soundtrack to Never Rarely Sometimes Always on vinyl, with the full consent and cooperation of Julia Holter.

The true test of originality for any musician comes when you hear an instrument being played and you instantly know who’s playing it. For electric guitarists, certainly Hendrix qualifies; Page and Clapton, too. Maybe Eddie Van Halen before the legion of imitators. You probably have your own list, but to us, standing toe-to-toe (or pick-to-pick) with those legends is Television guitarist and solo artist Tom Verlaine. His self-taught, jazzinfluenced style, largely devoid of effects, and vibrato tone (oh, that tone!) makes any Verlaine solo unmistakably a Verlaine solo. That he was quite an accomplished, idiosyncratic songwriter is just a bonus. Real Gone Music is very, very proud to announce that we have arranged with the Verlaine estate to release Tom’s last three solo albums on LP, of which this one, 2006’s Around, is the second. Around picks up the lofty mantle of the Warm and Cool album that was released 14 years prior with another set of utterly mesmerizing instrumentals, ranging from solo, almost raga-esque explorations (“Flame”) to post-rock vamps (“Balcony”) to abstract sketches (“A Burned Letter”) to the kind of indescribable, utterly gorgeous beauty that only this man and his guitar could pull off (“Eighty-Eights”).

CRAZY TOWN: The Gift of Game
(25TH ANNIVERSARY RED DEVIL VELVET VINYL EDITION & YELLOW BUTTERFLY VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: JULY 12, 2024
“Come my lady/Come-Come my lady/ You’re my butterfly, sugar baby”…If there was a song-track to the turn of the millennium, Crazy Town’s “Butterfly” was it, starting with its appearance on the 1999 album Gift of Game and winding up with its reign at #1 in the charts in February 2001. Anchored by a sample of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty,” it forever defined the term “nu-metal power ballad,” and was a rare-for-the-genre love song to boot! But the album from whence it came didn’t fly as high as it did, with over 2.5 million copies sold, just because of “Butterfly.” The Gift of Game brings the noise with an all-out alternative metal assault, and the band’s rappers—bolstered by guest appearances from KRS-One and Mad Lion—are markedly better than their rap/metal contemporaries. And then there’s the album art, created by member Shifty Shellshock’s father and uncle, which lends a vivid rendering to the fantasies of every teenage boy listening to “Lollipop Porn.” In short, this was a freakin’ HUGE record that somehow…somehow!...has NEVER been on vinyl. So how to handle its momentous debut on its 25th anniversary? Well, first, we’ve created an inner sleeve with all of the lyrics (and there are a lot of ‘em). Our sources also tell us that the very explicit hidden bonus track on the CD release has mysteriously made it on here. But when it comes to the vinyl, given what we anticipate is going to be, ahem, crazy demand, we have pressed the record in two different colors, one in “Red Devil Velvet” vinyl and the other in “Yellow Butterfly” vinyl. Come dance with us and Crazy Town…twice!

In 1971, Atlantic Records released a pair of Dusty Springfield singles produced by the legendary songwriter/producer Jeff Barry (one-time songwriting and romantic partner of Ellie Greenwich, and author of too many hits to name): “Haunted”/”Nothing Is Forever” and “I Believe In You”/”Someone Who Cares.” A restless Dusty, freshly relocating to America from her native England, then departed the label and left an additional 9 songs recorded with Barry in the can, where they stayed until Rhino issued one track, “Faithful” (in mono), as a bonus track on the 1990s CD release of Dusty’s 1970 Atlantic album A Brand New Me. The other tracks didn’t surface until a subsequent deluxe reissue of Dusty’s landmark 1969 album Dusty in Memphis included them as bonus cuts. Then, reissue producer Jim Pierson—who tracked down the missing masters after being lost for over two decades —assembled Dusty’s Barry-produced masters and put them together in a single package for the first time to create the third Dusty Springfield Atlantic Records album as planned in 1971. Real Gone Music’s release of Faithful on LP presents these historic Barry-Springfield collaborations exactly as they were originally intended to be heard, with the 12 tracks meant for the album release out on vinyl over 50 years later. All tracks are in stereo, while the liner notes on the new gatefold spread, penned by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese, feature a number of rarely-seen photos of the legendary singer. These stunning pop, soul and gospel flavored selections showcase the iconic singer at the height of her vocal magic. A missing/ jumbled part of Dusty’s august recorded legacy, finally set right and available in its intended format. And the music has never sounded better than it does here: this silver and red “Bullets ‘n’ Blood” pressing was remastered from the original tapes by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in New York. Comes complete with the amazing original album art, too…a classic album now even more collectible than before!

And it’s a highly prized one, at that, with original copies selling for triple figures. One reason for that is, unlike many of their more poppy Boston-based peers, Listening boasted an original, swirling, hard-edged sound, full of jazzy and even proggy passages, and keyboardist/singer/ songwriter Michael Tschudin’s lyrics were openly countercultural. Arthur Baker presents BREAKER’S REVENGE
Original B-Boy and B-Girl Breakdance Classics 1970-84
“What I truly loved about early Hip-Hop was that the music thrown down by ‘Bam, Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jay and Kool DJ Herc was genre-less, multi-cultural, music from all ends of the world. This is the definitive collection, including all the classics (other than a couple that alas we couldn’t get the rights to), and some real hard to find obscurities.”
Arthur BakerCompiled by legendary producer Arthur Baker, ‘Breakers Revenge’ is a near-definitive collection of original Funk, Soul, Latin, Disco and Electro classic tracks from 1970-1984.
These tracks, a combination of classics and obscurities, have all since become legendary to Breakdancers everywhere. First played at South Bronx block parties, community halls and park jams in the 1970s and 80s, spun endlessly by the first three major hip-hop DJs – Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa – and found in the record crates of any DJ of note ever since.
Seminal funk and soul tracks such as Dennis Coffey’s ‘Scorpio’, The Jimmy Castor Bunch’s ‘It’s Just Begun’, James Brown’s ‘Get on the Good Foot’, The Mohawks’ ‘Champ’ sit side-by-side here with the ground-breaking, classic electro of Afrika Bambaataa’s ‘Planet Rock’, and Arthur Baker’s own definitive ‘Breaker’s Revenge.’
Breakdancing has come a long way from its New York roots to its respected position as an art form today where, for the first time ever, it is to be featured in the Olympics held in Paris this August 2024.
The ‘breakbeat’ remains at the very heart of hip-hop, the mercurial funk, soul and disco tracks, always 100% guaranteed to get B-Boys, B-Girls and Breakdancers moving at any block party, with the percussive breakdown of each track the pinnacle soundtrack to any dance/battle between Breakdancers of any note.
Similarly these tracks have been sampled many 1000s of times over by every hip-hop artist and producer of note. KRS-ONE, Marley Marl, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Public Enemy, Eric B, The Fugees, Outkast, Mos Def, Main Source, Jungle Brothers, LL Cool J, De La Soul and, well, everyone!
Compiler Arthur Baker played a pivotal role in hip-hop history when in 1982 he produced Afrika Bambaataa’s seminal ‘Planet Rock’ (as featured here), introducing electronic instruments into hip-hop for the first time ever and in the process created electro. After ‘Planet Rock’, Arthur Baker went on to remix or produce every major artist of note – from New Order to the Rolling Stones, Al Green to the Pet Shop Boys.
This Soul Jazz Records vinyl release is presented as a deluxe gatefold double vinyl with two bespoke inner sleeves and download code, and the double CD comes in a digi-case with full notes and booklet. Both formats come complete with an introduction by Arthur Baker, extensive sleevenotes, including a track-by-track breakdown by hip-hop historian JayQuan, and striking images from photographer Sophie Bramly.

A FULL ALBUM OF UNHEARD MAC STUDIO CUTS!
A lost solo piano record from the Night Tripper! Originally put to tape in ‘82 & ‘83 for the Clean Cuts label, these tracks have remained unheard until now. Two numbers feature the doc's raspy growl while his solo piano navigates us through the rest of the train ride, past touches of blues, jazz, and foot stompin’ boogie-woogie jive. It's the kind of magic that can only come from a dusty tape box. The CD includes two CD-only bonus tracks!
In 1981, Dr. John began recording his first of two solo piano albums. The “new” performances featured on this release are of the same quality as the music on Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack and The Brightest Smile In Town.
His left hand creates a three-note rhythmic pattern that forms the foundation for the performance while his right soulfully plays the melody and then builds off of it in the tradition of the New Orleans piano blues masters. In other songs, it begins as a nostalgic and heartfelt ballad, picking up steam during the performance and switching moods several times before returning to where it began.
While it is a real shame that he would never again record a full album of unaccompanied solos (Dr. John enjoyed leading a band too much), the release of Frankie & Johnny gives one an additional opportunity to discover just how brilliant and spirited a pianist Mac Rebennack was during his colorful career.

The Mighty Monarch of Exploitation Cinema! These audacious adults-only radio adverts and trailers showcase all original counter-culture compositions from Friedman’s freaky frontal lobe! Includes a DVD!
Always a carny at heart, Friedman gravitated towards the sleazy independent lm world, where he started a new company and ushered in a decade of his greatest lms. Always brimming with bodaciously bare beauties and copious carnality – which became his tawdry trademark. From 1964-1975, he wrote and produced roughies, historical costume dramas (based on literary classics), counter culture time capsules, wild wanton westerns, various soft-X sizzlers, an elaborate jungle epic and perhaps the worst sci- movie ever committed to celluloid.
But what ties all of these lms together is the ballyhoo. Friedman sure knew how to craft an auditory advertising campaign to got ‘em in the theatres. He was the king of alliteration and catchy taglines and his coming attractions were among the best and most entertaining of their time. Many of the trailers and radio spots utilized all-original compositions and scores from Billy Allen – a composer/conductor Friedman enlisted to set his lms apart from all the other smut peddlers.
As “adults only” lms were getting more explicit in the ‘70s, Friedman longed for the good old days of sin and skin. He only dabbled in the XXX world for a short time before retiring. So, listen up and get ready to have your ears spanked hard!

▶ We are excited to reissue The Bolshoi’s 1986 full-length debut album Friends (or Fiends). Out of print for at least 30 years, this pressing is on white vinyl. Upon release, Friends reached the top of the Alternative charts, and the album’s first single “Away” hit #1 on the CMJ charts.
The Bolshoi were different. Their songs were dark and subversive, sufficient evidence for many critics to corral them under the ‘Gothic’ banner at the time of their debut album Friends - but they really only “flirted” with Goth. They oozed dark, pensive lyrics supported with inventive pop-goth guitar making them nearly impossible to categorize.
The suburban surrealism of the lyrics was rooted in the stories of characters on the fringes of society rather than brooding romantics, with an undercurrent of boredom, inadequacy, and violence. Not the usual themes for pop success!
Based in London, the band consisted of Trevor Tanner (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Chown (bass), Jan Kalicki (drums), and Paul Clark (keyboards). With powerful live shows The Bolshoi built a substantial following before disbanding in 1988.
“Trevor Tanner’s songs scraped away at the surface of suburban normality to uncover the darkness beneath, and he knew how to deliver a bombastic powerchord and reverb drenched riff” — Q Magazine
“The Bolshoi’s strength lies not only in the clever use of knobs and strings and keys and things, the juxtaposition of profanity and purity, innocence and lies, but also in the dank, darkly secret passages of their will.” — Melody Maker
COLOR GREEN FOOL’S PARADE
The color green can represent many things. It can symbolize money, of course, but also weed. And envy. It implies newness, the rebirth of spring, but it can also evoke illness and infection. It’s an apt name for a band that is defined by its adaptability, by its knack for doing many different things all at once. On the Color Green’s second full-length—their first as a quartet—they ground their cosmic jams in earthy melodies, drawing from ‘60s SoCal folk-r0ck, ‘70s classic rock, ‘80s underground rock, ‘90s psychedelic dance-rock, and many other sources.
In the two years the band has been touring, it has already shared stages with a range of groups that reflect both the sophistication and the wild malleability of their sound, including Fuzz, Kikagaku Moyo, Circles Around the Sun, and Young Guv. “When we play live, I don’t really know what’s going to happen,” says guitarist Noah Kohll. “You really have no idea what you’re going to get with this band, which keeps things fresh for us and maybe makes the live experience special.”
Adds drummer Corey Rose, “One thing about this band that I really appreciate is that we can camouflage into any environment or any show. We can play with Hiss Golden Messenger and lean into that funky country vibe, or we can play with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and get evil. We all love a variety of music, so let’s not put ourselves in a box.”
That wild, mercurial quality is reflected on Fool’s Parade, a meditation on loss, grief, confusion, frustration, and the clarity to which they all lead.
Their songs are vehicles for self-explorations, not just a means of putting their feelings into lyrics and notes but molding them, night after night, into different shapes to get different insights. “I feel like that’s the endless spiritual journey of this band,” says Madden. “There’s always this thing that is mysterious, that you can never put your finger on. Music is a way to give yourself ground within the unknown. It’s a way to convene with something outside yourself, whether you call that the muse or God or the collective unconsciousness or whatever. Maybe that’s relatable to people because we live in a very noisy and confusing world. Everybody’s trying to find that ground.”

“...equal parts Ennio Morricone, Lee Hazelwood, and Nick Cave with a touch of Chris Isaak’s less romantic side... few if any artists are brave and/or creative enough to channel this ghostly, often ominous vibe into moving, sensual and stirring music.”
– HAL HOROWITZ, American SongwriterOver the last 20 years, Portland, Oregon's Federale has carved out a unique niche within the indie music landscape, blending their signature spaghetti-Western instrumental sound with increasing doses of moody vocal arrangements in the spirit of Lee Hazlewood or later-period Leonard Cohen. Still, through it all songwriter (and lead singer, when there is one) Collin Hegna has maintained a strictly retro vibe, and Federale's records have always sounded period-correct for an alternate-universe 1971 where rock and roll never caught on.
Reverb & Seduction, Federale’s sixth studio album, marks the band’s 20th anniversary, and finds them beginning to color outside those Ennio Morricone lines. Perhaps Hegna—who also spent the last 20 years as a dues-paying member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre—has finally decided to give his psych-rock alter ego a seat at the Federale table.
“Before, I'd have an idea and think, ‘Well, that can't be a Federale song’, because it had distorted guitars or whatever,” says Hegna. “But then I thought, 'Well, why not?’” This openness to a broader palette of influences allows Reverb and Seduction to veer into psychedelic and even gothic territory—think Love and Rockets or Sisters of Mercy—that the 2010s Federale might have considered off limits. The album's first single “Heaven Forgive Me,” for example, draws on Goblin (the Italian prog-rockers who scored Suspiria) and perhaps even a little Depeche Mode, while “Advice from a Stranger” borrows the fuzz and feedback of DIG!-era BJM and The Electric Prunes.
For all these rumblings of change, however, Reverb and Seduction is still very much a Federale record, and longtime fans will find plenty of the cinema-ready soundscapes they've come to expect. The film industry continues to take notice as well: The band's latest licensing successes include placing tracks in the trailer for the Colin Farrell/Brendan Gleeson vehicle Banshees Of Inisherin, as well as in the Kate Hudson thriller Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon and Swiss action/comedy Mad Heidi
Going forward Federale expects to fully embrace the role of a working, touring band, starting with a West Coast tour timed to coincide with the new record's July release. A European tour will follow in late fall 2024.
Kaycie Satterfield’s debut lp rosie
Wistful, tender melodies and utterly enchanting vocals hit with a delicate, yet crushing force as Satterfield channels inner churn into cathartic beauty: Music that dwells in emotive depths, while capturing a “universal queer coming-of-age story.”

Description: Kaycie Satterfield leans into the endless, prickly change inherent in life. So when the guitarist and singer-songwriter broke her wrist in 2020 and was entirely unable to play her instrument for months, she had no choice but to embrace change. “Guitar is my main source of continuity,” she says. “So I had to learn how to think outside of my current conventions and to work with limitations.” On one hand, she needed to figure out how to write and play with one hand tied behind her back. But the fact that around the same time she had to go through four moves and a breakup meant she'd have to make peace with far more drastic change. And rather than be stuck in dated patterns and stories, Satterfield was newly determined to tell her own story her own way. The resulting album, Rosie (due July 12th via Earth Libraries), is a glistening slice of indie rock that bolsters Satterfield’s impeccable songwriting with a new perspective and rich, synth-driven production.

Hannah Mohan’s new album is a first in more ways than one. Time Is a Walnut is the first solo release from the Western Massachusetts singer and songwriter, after nearly a decade fronting indie-pop band And the Kids. The album also comes amid the longest stretch Mohan has spent in one place since she left home at 16 to hop freight trains and hitchhike across North America.
Making music has been at the center of Mohan’s life ever since, even as other circumstances have changed—sometimes radically. A longterm relationship crumbled in 2019. Then the pandemic arrived, bringing an end to her band. After writing a batch of new songs taking stock of her situation, Mohan asked Alex Toth of Rubblebucket and Tōth to produce them, the latest installment of a longtime friendship and occasional creative collaboration.
Although Time Is a Walnut is a breakup album, don’t go in expecting tearjerkers. Mohan draws from a richer palette here, with themes of messy eroticism on the sultry “Soaked,” altered consciousness on the buzzy rocker “Heaven and Drugs,” and navigating personal hells with Lady Lamb on “Hell.” Throughout, the songs showcase Mohan’s powerful voice, prismatic melodicism and distinctive lyrical sensibility as she processes major events in her life.
“Hannah is such a talent as a songwriter, singer and especially guitarist.” -TINY DESK
“On lead vocals, Mohan comes alive: a loose cannon with a searing voice that rings out over the chiming cacophony underpinning most of [her] songs.” -BOSTON GLOBE
“Striking vocals [that] rival the vibrato and boldness of Siouxsie Sioux...and music that’s both fearless and entertaining” -NPR

THE EPS BRINGS 2009 S FUN AND LAUGHTER AND 2021’S CALMING NIGHT PARTNER TOGETHER ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME, COMBINING TWO DISTINCT CHAPTERS IN LAND OF TALK’S SONIC JOURNEY WHILE OFFERING FANS A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR SOUND.
FUN AND LAUGHTER, ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 2009, SHOWCASES THE BAND S EARLY EXPERIMENTATION WITH TEXTURE AND TONE. FROM THE SHIMMERING GUITARS OF “MAY YOU NEVER,” TO THE HAUNTING MELODIES OF “A SERIES OF SMALL FLAMES,” EACH TRACK EXUDES A SENSE OF YOUTHFUL ENERGY AND INTROSPECTION.
CALMING NIGHT PARTNER, RELEASED IN 2021, IS AN EQUALLY MESMERIZING COLLECTION OF SONGS THAT DELVES INTO THEMES OF LONGING AND REDEMPTION. WITH TRACKS LIKE “LEAVE LIFE ALONE,” AND “SOMETHING WILL BE SAID,” THE EP SHOWCASES POWELL’S CONTINUING EVOLUTION AS A SONGWRITER AND LYRICIST.
THIS RELEASE REPRESENTS MORE THAN JUST A COLLECTION OF SONGS; THEY ARE A TESTAMENT TO THE BAND’S UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO THEIR CRAFT AND THEIR UNYIELDING PASSION FOR STORYTELLING THROUGH MUSIC. AS THEY CONTINUE TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF THEIR SOUND AND FORGE NEW PATHS IN THE INDIE ROCK LANDSCAPE, ONE THING REMAINS CERTAIN THE ECHOES OF LAND OF TALK

Matthew Bourne is difficult to pin down. You may have preconceptions of an artist who first came to prominence as a virtuosic pianist and winner of the Perrier Jazz Award in 2001. Witnessing Bourne at the piano is a visceral thrill with the instrument becoming an extension of his body. It’s unclear where one ends and the other begins as he climbs inside a grand to pluck, strum and bend the notes to his will. There’s a rare physicality in his performances that sets him apart – unexpected in the world of concert halls and Steinways. And yet, that’s not Bourne. He balances those moments of tension and drama with space and an innate sense of melody, as adept at using silence as he is with the notes he plays. But that’s not Bourne either.
Over the last twenty years, you’re as likely to find Bourne piloting Moogs, bothering cellos and harmoniums, covering Kraftwerk, Charlie Chaplin and Phil Collins, collaborating with the weather or unearthing rare Victorian keyboard instruments as you are “playing” the piano. His fingerprints are all over a huge number of diverse projects. And then there’s the infamous performance piece in which he demolished an old upright with a sledgehammer. A form of self-flagellation or two fingers up to the “establishment”?
Matthew Bourne is difficult to pin down.
For such a forward-thinking artist, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Bourne can be a little reluctant to return to the instrument on which he made his name. At least in public. That’s too easy. When he does, it’s cause for celebration. But that’s not Bourne. If you happen to spend time in his company, in concert or in person, you’ll find an endearing and somewhat acerbic wit at play. There’s an unwillingness to accept popular convention and obey the rules unless they can be bent or played with. But that’s not the whole story either, because he’s also unfailingly generous with his time and with his music. It’s evident in the fact almost all of his recorded output has been in dedication to friends, family, lovers and peers. The titles tell their own story.

And yet… This Is Not For You.
This is Not for You. was born from an off-hand comment by one of Matthew Bourne’s confidants. His instruction, “Do not delete,” provided Bourne with a commission of sorts, an ideal restriction to work within. Everything on the album was given a chance to shine in the studio, to be worked on amongst the freedom of that no deletion diktat - new inspirations now lie beside deep-mined remembrances. Cello and Dulcitone have been added sparingly for colour, but this is Bourne playing for his own enjoyment. Intimate. Reserved even. The real Matthew Bourne?
“I could just sit down and do other stuff… that sounds really arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. This is the healing bit of the process for me - that’s why I sit at the piano. It’s a place of trust. It’s always there, and will always be there.”
• Matthew Bourne returns to the piano – his first full-length solo piano album since 2017’s Isotach
• Recorded at Bourne’s home studio overlooking the moors in Airedale, Yorkshire
• Strictly limited runs of just 500 copies on black vinyl and CD for the world
• In addition to his celebrated solo output, Bourne’s list of collaborations is forever growing and includes the likes of Alabaster DePlume, Nils Frahm, MINING, Nightports and Mzlkypop, and has played a key role in Keeley Forsyth’s desolate and haunting works
• 2017-2019 saw a number of duo shows and a short tour with the late Keith Tippett, the culmination of a 20-year relationship based on mutual admiration and inspiration which is marked on the moving closing track of the album
• Tour dates to support the release will follow

Gondwana’s newest stars are West London’s Kessoncoda, aka drummer Tom Sunney and keyboardist Fil Sowa. Standing firm between acoustic tradition and electronica, they are founded on a unique blend of melodic ostinato-laced piano and unwavering drums. Drawing on their array of musical interests, Fil and Tom take influence from rock, electronica, ambient, breakbeat and soundtracks for film and artists such as Squarepusher, Radiohead and Clark all hot-housed in their unique studio setup, a shed at the bottom of Tom’s garden.
Like former and present Gondwana Records label mates such as GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet there’s something strongly cinematic about Kessoncoda’s music, like a narrative arc which unfolds through different themes and moods, with an ebb-and-flow of intensity, as breath-taking swells of melody burst into being, eventually to resolve in a wondrous climax.
There’s also a deliberate undercurrent of post Covid unease which is encapsulated in the title Outerstate. “this feeling of being within a group of friends, and you're chatting, and you’re physically there but mentally you're not at all – you're somewhere else, a really weird state of being.” The murmured lyrics on Talk To Me I’m Sleeping are Tom’s poem about this dislocation, and it’s voiced by their friend/photographer Siân O’Connor. Elsewhere, there’s a fabulous moment on Dreambend, when further collaborators pop up – Gondwana label-mate saxophonist Jasmine Myra, violinist Krystyna Pęzínska and on cello Fil’s music teacher from school, Andreas Manoras. Outerstate is also subtly textured with synths and tech-noize, reflecting their interest in electronica (think Warp Records, Erased Tapes) –“the warm, warbly side of synths right through to the really shrill Squarepusher sound.”
It’s the perfect union of complementary personalities that gives Kessoncoda their unique drive, of headlong sticksman Tom with his extraordinary offbeat pummel, together with thoughtful keysman Fil, with his ostinato melodiousness. The title Outerstate also reflects their location on the metropolitan outskirts of West London, and equally their existence at a distinct remove from any scene, as they dreamt up their soundworld in hermetic isolation. Now, though, they’re ready to go public and something tells us that Outerstate is just the beginning of something. From Tom’s shed to the world, Kessoncoda are ready to go global!

Any reasonably knowledgeable fan of post-punk will likely recognise the name of Una Baines. A founder of both The Fall and Blue Orchids, Una's influence in the development of both bands is a matter of historical fact...so much so that people scarcely realise how few recordings she's actually made - a solitary 7" with The Fall, one LP and a few singles by Blue Orchids, and that's it, barring her most recent recording, The Fates' obscure album "Furia", released nearly forty years ago on a tiny label until its rediscovery a few years back on the Finders Keepers label. Una's spent much of the last four decades working in community organising, raising a family, and functioning as a symbolic godmother to many Mancunian artists and musicians who cite her as an aspiration and mentor. Her band Poppycock has undergone several line-up changes between their sporadic - almost exclusively local - live appearances. Una was never shy in describing her personal ideals and artistic expression in terms of feminism - even if the term was occasionally derided by some female punk artists. "Magic Mothers" displays a consistency of vision rare traceable back to interviews she did during The Fall. Hearing it, we're reminded of the emotional fierceness set against pop arrangements from acts like Look Blue Go Purple and Dead Famous People, or the spare pop jazziness found in songs by Marine Girls, Tracey Thorn's pre-fame combo.

The Janitors –
An Error Has Occurred

“Everything’s been fucked since David Bowie died or they started up the Hadron Collider” say The Janitors. This feeling is epitomised in the title of their riveting new album: An Error Has Occurred. Marking over two decades of activity for the Swedish psych-rockers, the recording is informed by heartbreak and loss as well as the dismal state of the entire planet. For The Janitors, these two polarities intertwine constantly: “What’s personal is political and vice versa.” To channel their frustration and anger, the band revived certain songs they’d shelved during the pandemic when working on the acclaimed Noisolation Sessions. They added others, written since, that suited the mood of sticking a middle finger up to the oppressive world around us. Whereas previous recordings were often layered up gradually, this time the full band (Henric Herlenius, Jonas Eriksson, Anders Thorell and Wilhelm Tengdahl) rehearsed intensely together before laying down everything live, over two days and nights, in a converted missionary church. The songs on Side A have the menace of Melvins, the swagger of The Stooges and the cosmic heft of The Heads. These are the more simply constructed and poppier pieces... or so the band believe. (One friend of theirs did consider this “delusional”.) ‘In A Bliss’ acts as the album’s radiant centrepiece. A palette-cleansing love song which recalls The Jesus And Mary Chain at their most starry eyed, it finds The Janitors searching for solace and strength in straightforward companionship. After this come the dronier numbers, drawn out with soundscapes and textures influenced by The Velvet Underground’s sonic experiments and the equally immersive atmospheres of electronic acts like Massive Attack. Hence, ‘Operator’ swings threateningly like a space-rock Swans, while the approach on ‘Farewell Spacegirl’ is jazzier and more meditative.

Cowtown –
Fear Of… Gringo Records
LP WAAT083LP 2024-07-12

First album in 8 years from Leeds Devo-esque DIY punk trio, full of three minute pop blasts. Friendship can keep a band going for so long, but it’s more than that that’s seen this ostensibly DIY band enjoy European tours with heroes Deerhoof and Quasi, play festivals at home and abroad, and during several periods of time in their history become the most requested hometown support in their native Leeds for any touring band worth their salt, not to mention their own ability to continually sell out shows up and down the UK with little to no backing. Other projects have come and gone, Nash perhaps most notably as drummer in Hookworms which has since evolved into Holodrum; Knott stepping further into the experimental undergrowth as Basic Switches, among other collaborative efforts – yet the band have remained. Their fizzed-up brand of Devo-esque punk full of pop smarts has never stood still, constantly being updated and tweaked to sound timeless and subsequently outlast whichever latest guitar sub-genre has cycled back into fashion once again. Always though, Cowtown have kept at their core a warm sense of humour, positivity and the cartoonishly abstract song writing sense that’s always felt like their own small corner of the musical world. A 20-year habit is hard to kick though and the group came to the same conclusion as everyone else; which was to crack on and try not to fear the outcome – and so Fear Of… is here. Silly as it might be to say for a band whose members are living through middle age, there’s a newer maturity to Cowtown’s sound. The Baby Seals debut album, "Chaos," is a sonic exploration that blends heavy guitars, a pop edge, and a punk rock garage spirit with a heavy attack. The band, comprised of Amy "Amos" Devine on drums and backing vocals, Kate Shore on bass and backing vocals, and Kerry Devine on guitar and lead vocals, delivers a raw and energetic collection that captures the essence of their live performances. Recorded in March 2023 in Thaxted, just outside of Essex, "Chaos" embodies the DIY ethos that has defined The Baby Seals' approach to music. Working with engineer Joe in a secluded outhouse surrounded by fields, the band laid down the tracks live over a day, capturing the unfiltered essence of their sound. Joe's extensive collection of homemade pedals added a unique touch to the recording, while Benny T's mixing expertise brought the album to its final form. The decision to minimise post-production sets "Chaos" apart from previous recordings, reflecting the band's commitment to authenticity and a desire to showcase their growth and maturity. On Chaos Kerry says: “Chaos is the next phase in life for us lasses in the band - babies and mid-life responsibilities. The album definitely is about how we feel and experience the world around us in our 30s and 40s. Someone who heard the album recently said it's like the The Baby Seals have grown up and I liked that because that's what I feel likes happened to me in the last two years… The album definitely has Themes: inclusivity, gender inequality, the mental load, the motherload, power, body positivity, challenging taboos, liberation. The importance of what to take seriously and what not to take seriously.

The second solo album by Adam Ross - a musician described by Folk Radio as "one of Scotland’s most talented singers and songwriters” – produced by multiple Scottish Album Of The Year Award nominated composer/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Wasylyk and released on London label Fika Recordings. The album is a heavily lyrical collection of warped 70s-esque indie-folk ballads inspired by Adam’s relocation to the coast. The title, Littoral Zone, is a term used to define where the sea meets the land but also a nod to a style of direct, literary observations about the people, landscapes and states of mind Adam has discovered since moving there. The lyrics cover themes of nature, politics, faith, love and death and are surrounded by Andrew’s deft production featuring luscious string ensembles and brass. The writing of the album saw Adam move away from guitar and onto piano, having bought a slightly battered upright piano from a local antiques warehouse as a first priority after moving house in 2021. Chords, melodies and musical ideas were recorded on Adam's phone before lyrics were slowly built up during his walks on the beach and clifftops around the village of St Cyrus where he now lives. Songs like Free Will and Union Gary chart and exaggerate the at-times ridiculous minutiae of day-to-day life, with the latter musing on British foreign policy via the prism of an unkempt garden. The Going and I Get It Wrong pay tribute to the natural beauty and mystery of coastal landscapes while Brambles falls into the musical tradition of the murder ballad, with a story loosely based on an amalgamation of true events. The album's darker edges can also be discovered in Shrinking and Ego which dwell on aging and self-doubt, however Apogee looks to counterbalance such themes with a pure outpouring of love.
