This Issue: Jeanette Wall (US Label Manager) & Christof Ellinghaus (Label Founder)
to create a community around music – that has managed to run through the heart of the label for over 30 years.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
JW: This is a little bit of a copout, but when I went to the City Slang Berlin office for the first time, the first thing to catch my eye was a promotional poster on the wall for a compilation City Slang released in 1992, as a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. The title is Freedom Of Choice (Yesterday’s New Wave Hits As Performed By Today’s Stars) — and the tracklist is unreal. Superchunk covering Devo, Chia Pet (the Sassy Magazine house band) covering The Human League, The Muffs covering John Fogerty. Sonic Youth covering Plastic Bertrand! It’s such a special slice of rock history that represents the underlying ethos of the label. I knew when I saw that poster, I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
Jeanette Wall: At the risk of aging myself in the most cringe way possible, I got my start on MySpace when I was in high school. I managed my best friend’s solo project after our middle school band broke up. I connected him to enough people on the platform til he was the #1 unsigned artist streaming on MySpace (it was cool, I promise).
When and where did the label begin?
JW: Christof Ellinghaus, our fearless leader, founded the label whilst promoting shows and tour managing in Berlin. The imprint offered a European home to a number of influential indie bands from across the Atlantic. Releases included Yo La Tengo, Sebadoh, Cell, The Flaming Lips, and Hole to name a few. The records released through City Slang have helped shape and embellish the last three decades of alternative music.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
JW: The name is a reference to Fred “Sonic” Smith’s Rendezvous Band’s heater, “City Slang.” Christof has a copy of the 7” above his desk.
How has the label changed since it started?
JW: It’s been 33 years of City Slang! With offices in Berlin, New York, Paris and London, I think the biggest change is how far the label has outgrown the borders of the European continent. We’re everywhere, working with wonderful artists from everywhere, with good people from everywhere.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.
JW: The HQ is in Berlin, where the nucleus resides, with a handful of satellite offices that connect the dots. Berlin is where the production meets the product management, as they say. We have an amazing digital team, in-house licensing, German PR and our warehouse space in the Berlin office as well. There is Simon who heads up the UK office out of London City, and Aymeric who runs the French HQ out of Paris. Then there is the New York office, now, that’s where the PARTY is! Bianca and myself hold it down for the USA, alongside Local Rep, in Brooklyn.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
Christof Ellinghaus: Well, we work with a lot of brand new artists, and when the pandemic hit, they were unable to strut their stuff. To show what they got. So this has been a real problem indeed, yes.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
JW: Berlin of course is at the heart of the unapologetic, raucous punk energy the folks who make up the label exude. But I think with such an international label, both in roster and staff, it’s difficult to pin down. Have you ever been to the Island of Misfit Toys? We’re serving that energy.
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
CE: We align the carefully researched data points from TikTok and Youtube as well as other socials, then draw our conclusions… Not. Somehow, weirdly, they keep finding us...
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
JW: Absolutely a mix. I’ll borrow from the beautiful description on our website: The label’s roster now encompasses everything from imaginative twists on dance music (Caribou, Gold Panda, Boy Harsher, Waleed, Coma, Sinkane, Junior Boys, Roosevelt) to inventive instrumental productions (Hauschka, Grandbrothers) multiple forms of ingenious songwriting (José Gonzaléz, Son Lux, KAINA, McKinley Dixon, Anna B Savage) genre-bending masterpieces (Noga Erez, Zouj, Sen Morimoto, Lambchop) and of course the kind of raucous guitars with which it first launched (Los Bitchos, King Hannah, Pom Pom Squad, Sprints, Nada Surf, Calexico).
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
CE: Well, back in the early days, we first and foremost wanted to be a home away from home for all these amazing US bands in Europe. That has obviously now shifted. We are now trying to be their global release partner and career builder all while we attempt
JW: There’s this German word our staff has been throwing around a lot, “die schnapsidee” — which basically means a wild idea, or an idea that comes about when drinking (“Schnapps”). We have a lot of those, I am not sure if one sticks out as the wildest. I will say, many of our schnapsideen come to fruition, or the ones worth remembering anyways. One of my favorites to witness was a live event City Slang hosted in Berlin with Sooper Records and Secretly where we brought together three artists who all share the same band and are deeply connected: Sen Morimoto, NNAMDÏ, KAINA all brought Chicago to this club sweet club that sits on the Spree, Marie-Antoinette. Here is to many more schnapsideen!
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
JW: Listen to what you want, how you want to listen to it. My favorite packaging trick City Slang pulled recently came from the mind of Softee. Jean Goode designed the packaging, and Nina thought to have the back of her LP be donned with a letter and a track by track, taking note from old school Decca records with lots to read and absorb on the jacket. Nina wanted the listener to really be able to connect with the music even when combing through the stacks at the record shop. It turned out beautifully.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
JW: They throw impeccable dinner parties. Not necessarily the most lavish, but thoughtful and warm. They pick up their favorite natural wine, a new candle, and the stinkiest cheese from the grocery store. They plan out their vinyl playlist in advance, and make everything from scratch. Even if the food is simple, it’s the most delicious when shared around a table. The conversation goes late into the night, and usually involves a joyous debate about a mysterious sample hidden on one of the records. I think this is also the average person who is employed at the label (brag).
Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
JW: Shameless self promotion, but you can check out my band Band Practice. I once ate a bowl of fettuccini on stage at Silent Barn (RIP) while playing a set. We are on indefinite hiatus.
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
JW: Music is what connects us, how we communicate our desires, joys, needs, dreams, pain, suffering. This connection holds the hand of ensuring the well-being of our fellow humans. That empathy, that ability to see each other’s experiences reflected back at us, is the whole point of putting out music in the first place. So, similarly to the health of the Earth, the health of each other is equally essential to what we do.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
JW: Remember MySpace? Just kidding. I think the biggest change is essentially the barrier to entry. Maybe it was never really there at all, but we know now more than ever that anyone can press record and have their song up available for the world on a million different platforms. The myth of it being something only certain people can do has dissipated.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
JW: I have always wanted to start a drag artist sub-label, and release beautiful 12” club mixes, like Gold Panda remixes Alaska 5000, featuring a McKinley Dixon verse. I think there are so many fun spaces where drag and indie music can connect. Just another excuse for Bianca and I to throw some amazing parties.
Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment?
Now’s your chance:
JW: This is a tough one (I love you all!!!), but I really have to give this space to my hometown store, Luna Records in Indianapolis. I learned so much from those folks, and I still have the first record crate I ever got that has the Luna logo all over it. Whenever I see an order from them, teenage Jeanette is smiling like a maniac.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
JW: I think folks will remember the dinner parties, those we hosted and those we soundtracked.

ANOHNI and the Johnsons release ‘My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross’ on July 7th. Blacklips Bar: Androgyns and Deviants — Industrial Romance for Bruised and Battered Angels, 1992–1995 showcases ANOHNI’s earliest recordings from her time with Blacklips Performance Cult, the extraordinary theatrical collective initiated by a cabal of artists, drag queens, punks, nightlife veterans and students that performed a new play every Monday night at 1:00 a.m. at New York’s Pyramid Club from 1992 to 1995, in the midst of the AIDS crisis in NYC. Blacklips never courted mainstream attention. However, the group left a sustaining impression within New York’s late night subculture by melding hysterical drag, surreal horror, and disconcerting tenderness. The compilation also features favorite DJ tracks alongside original recordings by other members of Blacklips Performance Cult.
“...a testament to cross-generational solidarity as the AIDS crisis persisted. Long before she achieved international renown, Anohni and her cohort fortified themselves against a brutally inadequate world by creating their own.” - The New York Times
“Looking for forebears, or trying to bring forward what otherwise feels lost takes persistence and work. And the silence around the work of Blacklips during its time demonstrates the fragility of such underlying structures; they are not immune to censorship, erasure, or reductive historicization. This is perhaps why Blacklips now resonates with people so much.” - Document Journal
“From the perspective of performance art, Blacklips seemed to arrive just after the peak of a polymathic Downtown scene that blurred drag, cabaret, theater, and activism. Musically, their capacity for earnestness separated them from precedent, imbuing their mourning with an openhearted, connective consonance that would become more common in the post-9/11 era. Of course, the album sets us in a much earlier period—one of punk, camp, and the fury of ACT UP. ” - Pitchfork
“As states outlaw drag and trans people’s presence in public spaces, it’s on us to make sure this world gives artists time and space to build a better one.” - Surface
“Before the internet, young creatives seeking community had to physically go out on the street to find other like-minded people. Anohni’s alarming T-shirt and bizarre fliers — with their fevered slogans, ‘Defy god’s natural plan’, ‘Be beautiful, worship the devil’, ‘Annihilate gender’ — were fine-tuned to attract rare and precious kindred spirits, while repulsing and repelling everyone else. It worked.” - i-D
“The authenticity and energy of the compilation comes from its inherent eclecticism” - The Wire
The East Village of the 1980s and early ’90s, when ANOHNI landed in New York, was a graveyard. Death notices for people in their 30s, 40s and 50s filled the papers, and memorials were held almost daily – at St. Mark’s, at Judson Memorial Church, in homes, in parks. Blacklips was for young people and survivors, the sick, the barely-hanging-on. - Frieze
“The collective retain a singular power, speaking to a new generation of creatives within the present day LGBTQIA community.” - CLASH

Jared Mattson’s Peanut didn’t originally come from a need to break away. As the pandemic hit stateside, Jared holed up in his home studio and kept developing the new music. And during that process it became increasingly clear to him that this wasn’t shaping up to be the next Mattson 2 album. This was a Mattson 1 album.
The album taps into our rattled world, where anxiety, loss, violence, and regret are sometimes pierced by the promise of love. Mattson’s solo debut unfolds like a string of fascinating clouds: These are not songs in a hurry; they shift around as they float by, and, most notably, they carry their unique kind of electric charge.

Overview
PJ Harvey’s tenth studio album I Inside the Old Year Dying marks her first release in seven years, following UK #1 album The Hope Six Demolition Project. On this album, which was recorded with long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood, PJ Harvey builds a sonic universe somehow located in a space between life’s opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past. Scattered with biblical imagery and references to Shakespeare, all of these distinctions ultimately dissolve into something profoundly uplifting and redemptive.
PJ Harvey has commanded attention since the start of her career and is the only musician to have been awarded the UK’s Mercury Music Prize more than once, winning first in 2001 for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea and again in 2011 for Let England Shake. An accomplished poet and visual artist, as well as a musician and songwriter, her work is striking in its originality: vivid, absorbing and distinct. Since the release of The Hope Six Demolition Project, which went to #1 album in her native UK, she has contributed compositions for stage and screen; most recently for Sharon Horgan’s acclaimed Bad Sisters mini-series. Throughout her career, Harvey has always ensured that each phase of her progress has taken her somewhere new, but her latest music is audacious and original even by her own standards. Full of a sense of a cyclical return to new beginnings, it combines its creative daring with a sense of being open and inviting, in the most fascinating way. The new songs, Harvey says, offer “a resting space, a solace, a comfort, a balm - which feels timely for the times we’re in.”

LITTLE DRAGON SLUGS OF LOVE
Release Date: July 7, 2023
The iconic Swedish 4-piece Little Dragon – spearheaded by vocalist Yukimi Nagano – return with a new and utterly beguiling blend of avant pop on their album “Slugs of Love” on Ninja Tune, inviting outright legend Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) and rapper JID (J Cole / Dreamville) for collabs. The universally loved and GRAMMY-nominated band paved the way for the likes of Billie Eilish, Steve Lacy, Solange and The Internet with their experimental and utterly compelling approach to pop music, inspiring the new generation to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. Unsurprisingly then, Little Dragon are referenced as the benchmark for electronic pop by a host of totemic artists such as Tyler The Creator, Kaytranada and Anderson .Paak.

The legendary collaboration between master percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and producer Adrian Sherwood return with their first new studio album in twelve years.
Originally conceived in 1981 as an attempt to make Brian Eno’s “vision of a psychedelic Africa” exist in musical form, the project has evolved and mutated over the years but all the hallmarks of their classic sound are present and correct on this record: hypnotic hand drums driving rhythms to move your head and feet; coupled with mind-bending arrangements and dubwise production. Inimitable guest vocals by the award winning Ghanaian kologo master, King Ayisoba lend an extra dimension.
An act of cultish proportions, African Head Charge have been compared to Sun Ra “for their same ability to head into the unknown” - Echoes magazine.
Recorded between Ghana and the UK, A Trip To Bolgatanga is a triumphant comeback.

Blessed with a formidable front woman in Brett Anderson, a guitar heroine in Allison Robertson, and a pummeling rhythm section in bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano, The Donnas were one of the greatest punk bands of the ‘90s, male or female, bringing a uniquely hedonistic yet feminist viewpoint to the genre. Now, with the full cooperation of the band, Real Gone Music is reissuing their first four albums on vinyl, a quartet of pop-punk classics that were originally released on the Lookout! label. And we’re doing ‘em right, with band commentary and some sonic TLC. Here are the first two…Let’s go mano!
THE DONNAS: The Donnas (All-Analog Natural with Black Swirl Vinyl Edition)
Recorded when they were still in high school, The Donnas’ 1997 debut was and will forever be one of the most infectious, sing-along slabs of punk ever waxed. Owing no small debt to the Ramones (all the way down to their sharing of “anonymous” names), the girls gleefully turn the sex, drugs, and rock and roll dials up to 11, except this time it’s the females that are looking for some action (“I wanna huff all night” and “I’m gonna get in his pants tonight” are two representative lyrical lines). And for our Real Gone reissue of this classic, you are getting The Donnas raw and unfiltered…that’s right, we actually scored the original quarter-inch 2-track master tape to the album, so you’re getting an all-analog version of this punkrock masterpiece. Band commentary just adds to the fun. Natural with black swirl vinyl pressing!

2. Let’s Go Mano!

4. Get Rid of That Girl
5. Drive In
6. Do You Wanna Go Out with Me
7. Rock ‘n’ Roll Boy
THE DONNAS: American Teenage Rock ‘N’ Roll Machine
Better production? Check. Better musicianship? Check. A more mature attitude? $#@! no! Released just a year after The Donnas’ first, self-titled record, American Teenage Rock ‘N’ Roll Machine slowed the tempos a bit—think more Runaways and KISS, less Ramones—but, with songs like “Checkin’ It Out” and “Leather on Leather,” the libidinous lyrics remained unchecked. Nor did The Donnas’ penchant for crafting catchy hooks, supercharged by the budding guitar heroics of Allison Robertson. Our reissue comes with a fresh remastering for vinyl from the original masters by Mike Milchner, and features band commentary along with the original “pin-up” calendar. Fire orange with black swirl pressing…shake in the action!

HANS ZIMMER The Last Samurai
ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE
(LIMITED 2-LP GOLD VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: JULY 7, 2023
The Last Samurai marked master screen composer Hans Zimmer’s 100th score, and it was and is perhaps his best. The 2003 film starred Tom Cruise as a Civil War soldier who travels to Japan and becomes embroiled in the clash between the Imperial Japanese Army and traditional Japanese samurai culture, lending Zimmer ample opportunity to display his unparalleled ability to fuse orchestral, Westernized elements with indigenous motifs (in this case, utilizing the traditional Japanese taiko drum for action sequences and the shakuhachi flute and koto for more pastoral passages). Fans of his work in The Thin Red Line will particularly enjoy this soundtrack, which, for being a score for an action film, includes long stretches of beautifully contemplative soundscapes (Zimmer liked it too, as “The Last Samurai Suite” appears on his new live album). We at Real Gone Music are proud to bring this soundtrack to LP for the first time, in a double-album housed inside a gatefold jacket and pressed in gold vinyl limited to 1000 copies. Highly recommended!

GReAT EX PECTATIONS: The Album
(Limited 2-LP Emerald Green Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023
Alfonso Cuarón’s 1998 film changed a few things from the original Charles Dickens novel: Abel Magwitch became Arthur Lustig, Miss Havisham became Nora Dinsmoor, poor old Pip became Finn…and most importantly for our purposes, early 19th century London became 1990s New York! And so did the soundtrack— featuring tunes by Chris Cornell (the rare “Sunshower”), Pulp, Scott Weiland, Iggy Pop, and The Verve Pipe, its finger was firmly on the pulse of the late 20th century music scene, with a few welcome curveballs (Cesaria Evora, Grateful Dead?) to boot. Collectors will also note that Tori Amos wrote “Siren” for the movie, and that “Today” by Poe—which, like several other songs in the score, did not appear in the film—makes its only appearance here. Great Expectations: The Album was originally released only on CD, so vinyl soundtrack collectors have been lobbying for years to see it out on wax, and we are obliging with a 2-LP set inside a gorgeous gatefold jacket, pressed in emerald green vinyl to match Gwyneth Paltrow’s ravishing dress from the film. Limited to 2000 copies!
OWSLEY: OWSLEY
(LIMITED TAN VINYL EDITION)
STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023
You probably heard Alabama-born multiinstrumentalist Will Owsley before you heard of him; he was a mainstay in the bands of Amy Grant and Shania Twain during the mid-‘90s. He then pulled a Tom Scholz of Boston-style maneuver and recorded his own album, which he shopped to the major labels as a take-it-or-leave-it deal. The Giant label bit, as well they should have; Owsley is one of the better power pop albums of the ‘90s and certainly one of the best power pop debuts ever to come down the pike (that this self-recorded album got a Grammy nom for best engineered album is further testimony as to Owsley’s many talents). You’ll hear a little Cars, a little Todd Rundgren, and a healthy helping of Owsley’s former bandmate Ben Folds, but the crunch of Owsley’s guitars makes sure the “power” gets as much play as the “pop.”
Highlights include “Oh No the Radio,” “Coming Up Roses,” and “Good Old Days,” but really this is a remarkably consistent album, full of hooks and some sonic surprises (cello! organ!). Owsley makes its LP debut in a tan vinyl edition limited to 1000 copies, complete with a full-color inner sleeve. You’ll be playing some of these songs on repeat in your head after a couple of listens.

ILL BISKITS: Chronicle of Two Losers
(Limited Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023
By popular demand, this lost classic the Golden Age of Hip Hop is finally getting a vinyl release! And when we say lost, we mean really lost; 1995’s Chronicle of Two Losers barely even saw a legit release before being deleted, which explains why even CD copies go for triple figures (this is its first legit release on LP). Ill Biskits was a one-and-done, German-born, Virginia-based duo composed of Deeda and Kleph Dollaz (R.I.P.) whose undeniable abilities on the mic and introspective, deep rhymes were mixed into hypnotic beats courtesy of D.I.T.C. producer superstars Buckwild and Lord Finesse. This album captures hip hop really coming of age as an art form; Chronicle of Two Losers has lyrical and sonic layers that unfold with repeated spins. Highly, highly recommended…so grab our coke bottle clear vinyl pressing while you can. It’s limited to 1000 copies, and includes an inner sleeve displaying the original CD booklet’s dreamy artwork.

It’s fair to say that what Ravi Shankar did for the sitar, Hamza El Din did for the oud (the short-necked Arabian lute): bringing a little-known instrument to the attention of the West and popularizing it. Indeed, he ended up playing oud with everybody from the Grateful Dead to the Kronos Quartet to his one-time roommate Sandy Bull. But El Din’s gifts went beyond that of an oud virtuoso; he was also an accomplished singer and composer, and you will hear all of those talents on full display on this seminal album, released on Vanguard in 1965 soon after his star-making appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival that attracted the attention of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Meditative, mesmerizing, and haunting, Al Oud features nine original compositions based on Nubian folk traditions; at first it’s the exotic sound of the oud that draws you in, but it’s the rhythmic pulse of the music and the expressive quality of El Din’s voice that keeps you riveted. Our first-ever American LP reissue of this classic record comes in a clear vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies, complete with original artwork featuring liner notes by Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, at the time Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations. Percy Sledge will forever be associated with “When a Man Loves a Woman,” a pleading, soulful ballad he sang with wrenching, convincing anguish and passion. Sledge sang all of his songs that way, delivering them in a powerful rush where he quickly changed from soulful belting to quavering, tearful pleas. It was a voice that made him one of the key figures of deep Southern soul.

Crowd Can Talk / Dressed In Trenches EP
The trio’s first release for Matador Records
On tour with Horsegirl in North America - Summer 2023
Formed in 2019, Lifeguard is Asher Case (bass, vocals), Isaac Lowenstein (drums, percussion), and Kai Slater (guitar, vocals). The trio is young – they met in junior high – but have already found a place at the forefront of an important emerging music community in their hometown.
They are also prolific. In just three years, the trio have put out a full-length, two EPs, and two 7” singles – on their own and also through the labels Chunklet Industries and Born Yesterday. Each release has been sharper than the last, with the band honing a distinct balance of melody and noise, rhythm and drone.

“In 2022, the crowd can talk, and they will. In all likelihood... they’ll still have the crowd talking decades later.” - Bandcamp
“They may be young, but the teenage local band Lifeguard knows what it’s doing. Perhaps that speaks to their emerging genius, which can be heard in their latest release, ‘Crowd Can Talk.’ Intelligent, motivated and just really, really talented.” - ChicagoTribune

In the summer of 2022, the Your Heart Breaks studio band, made up of Eli Moore and Ashley Eriksson from the band LAKE and Katherine Paul from Black Belt Eagle Scout, gathered at the Unknown Studio in Anacortes, Washington with producer Nicholas Wilbur to record the songs that would eventually become The Wrack Line
On planet Earth, the wrack line is a collection of organic material and debris left behind on the shore after a high tide. Walking the wrack you’ll find kelp, seagrass, shells, driftwood, dead sea creatures, agates, remnants of humanity and, once in a while, secret treasures thrown overboard from a container ship caught in a storm. Clyde Petersen’s The Wrack Line holds true to this natural phenomenon–a summation of the past few years, a lifetime of friendships, feelings and memories, broken free of a gyre and left upon the artists’ shoreline. The album was written as a collaborative effort between Petersen, occasionally known as Your Heart Breaks, and a slew of many special guests across the world. These songs were created through numerous exchanges of concepts, hooks, riffs, and emotional conversations, processed through tin-can telephones, carrier pigeons, twilight dreams, and shooting stars. Take your shoes off and walk the beach.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
DC839 LP Street Date: July 7, 2023
In addition to his day job transforming pop music with his own records, as well as those of Gastr del Sol, Loose Fur and Sonic Youth over the past few decades, Jim O’Rourke has been contracted for several dozen film scores over the years as well.
It makes sense his abilities as an improviser, composer and producer allow him to interpret cinematic moments with a unique understanding for their construction and how they work. It doesn’t hurt that Jim’s a well-versed cineaste, a complete and total fan of watching films, which has given him a preternatural understanding of the role of music in movies.
What doesn’t make sense is how Hands That Bind is the first film soundtrack of Jim’s to ever receive worldwide release! He’s worked with filmmakers of international repute, like Olivier Assayas, Allison Anders, Werner Herzog and Kôji Wakamatsu! He served as music consultant on Richard Linklater’s 2003 laff-fest, School of Rock! He’s played in ensembles of award-winning documentaries and films alike! Throw the guy an internationally-promoted soundtrack LP every more often, why doncha?
It was left to the “suits” of Drag City Records to innovate, once again, by taking a leap on an O’Rourke work. Made for an indie film that’s been seen by festival audiences and not enough others, the soundtrack for Hands That Bind is a moody, atmospheric delight.
Track Listing Go Spend Some Time With Your Kids
Wasn’t There Last Night
He’s Only Got One Oar in the Water
That’s Not How the World Works
A Man’s Mind Will Play Tricks On Him

Your Hands are Bound From Exporting to UK/EU, Australia/NZ But You Are Free to Sell to All Other Known Territories
Jim’s roots in composition via tape-editing have evolved into a sophisticated assembly of found-and-processed sounds that achieve highly musical, near-orchestral majesty as they hang in the very air of the drama that unfolds in Kyle Armstrong’s Hands That Bind Described as a “slow-burn prairie gothic drama” set in the farmland of Canada’s Alberta province, and starring Paul Sparks, Susan Kent, Landon Liboiron, Nicholas Campbell, Will Oldham, and Bruce Dern, Hands That Bind is a spellbinding trip to the existential bone of rural working life in North America. As conflict rises over the hardworked patches of land that provide a mere and mean existence, a desperate air settles in, as a series of mysterious, often supernatural occurrences rock the small community. O’Rourke’s vaporous, serpentine musical backdrops and atmospheres reflect the obsessions and distractions of the film’s principles; moods of all sorts seen or otherwise implied. Additionally, the music highlights cinematographer Mike McLaughlin’s closely observed accounting of the farmers’ environment, as well as the striking widescreen images of the big sky country with unnerving flair.
For fans of Jim’s ongoing steamroom series as well as collectors of soundtracks, Hands That Bind will provide hours of engrossing listening. And if you get a chance, see the movie projected in a movie house, please farmers aren’t the only ones struggling these days!

FEATURES CONTRIBUTIONS FROM:
Members of The dB’s, Chatham County Line & Mipso, Alongside Eric Heywood, Allyn Love & Caitlin Cary with Terry Manning & Mitch Easter on a Classic Chilton/Hoehn Tune, “She Might Look My Way”
CHAPEL HILL, N.C — On his new album, The Great Escape, Chris Stamey — known for his work in The dB’s, the Big Star’s Third concerts, and numerous solo recordings including recent forays into jazz and neo–Tin Pan Alley — returns to the electric guitar sounds and melodic lyricism that informed his classic ’80s solo records It’s Alright, Fireworks, and 2004’s Travels in the South — but with a twist!
This time out, alongside adroit pedal-steel aces Eric Heywood (Jayhawks, Pretenders, Alejandro Escovedo) and Allyn Love, Mipso’s Libby Rodenbough, and Chatham County Line’s John Teer and Dave Wilson, he’s found a distinctive spin on the ’70s Southern California country-rock flavors of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Soaring harmonies from Brett Harris (Big Star’s Third), Peter Holsapple (The dB’s), and Matt McMichaels (Mayflies USA, Surrender Human) fill out the picture on many tracks. And there’s an A-team of Caitlin Cary (harmonies), Don Dixon (acoustic bass), Will Rigby (The dB’s, drums), and Rodenbough (fiddle and background vocals) on “(A Prisoner of This) Hopeless Love.”
There’s also a vibrant version of a lost classic, the Alex Chilton / Tommy Hoehn composition “She Might Look My Way,” remembered fondly by Stamey from his late ’70s live performances with Chilton and the (unreleased) studio recording of it they did together for Elektra Records at Todd Rundgren’s studio. Here, it features two world-class fellow producers: Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), on drums and Terry Manning (Ardent Studios producer/engineer/guitarist; Staples Singers, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top). Most tracks, however, are expertly anchored by Rob Ladd (The Connells) or Dan Davis (Six-String Drag) on drums, often accompanied by co-producer Jeff Crawford on bass.
The Great Escape, the first release in decades on seminal indie label Car Records (on which Stamey had issued recordings by Chris Bell, Mitch Easter, and himself in the late ’70s and early ’80s), will be available on CD, digital downloads, and streaming platforms, via a joint venture with Schoolkids Records / Redeye Distribution, and includes two bonus tracks: an “electric” version of “Back in New York,” augmented à la Tom Wilson’s electrification of “The Sounds of Silence,” and a stream-of-consciousness celebration of a surprise early-morning phone call with “the one and only” Van Dyke Parks

Over the course of two well-received albums and numerous singles and compilation appearances, Jeanines have captured the ears of discerning listeners with a sound that recalls a diverse swathe of pop history, from 60s folk-pop and girl-group tunes to 80s DIY pop to solid gold 90s touchstones like The Aislers Set, The Cat's Miaow and the postBlack Tambourine bands of Pam Berry.
Now they're back with their first new tunes since 2022's Don't Wait For A Sign and the hits just keep on coming. "Each Day" is moody jangler that delivers melodic and emotional heft that belies its brief 1:43 length. Destined for 1,000 indiepop mixtapes, it's exactly the kind of song that the 7" was invented for. "What The Echoes Say" is a strummy delight, showcasing Alicia Jeanine's lovely vocal harmonies to maximum effect. "Tilt In Your Eye" wraps up this ace single -- it was Jeanines' contribution to Where It's At Is Where You Are's ace 2019 compilation The Moon And Back and appears here on vinyl for the first time.

THE WEEK THAT WAS 15 year anniversary LP Remastered Clear
vinyl edition
STREET DATE: 7 July 2023
LABEL: Memphis Industries
The Week That Was, a one off concept album with a murder mystery subtext from Peter Brewis of Field Music was released by Memphis Industries in 2008.
Inspired by the novels of Paul Auster and written after a period of self imposed retreat from the glow of screens whether televisual, handset or monitor, The Week That Was was the first of Field Music’s extra curricular releases and features some of the Brewis brothers’ finest works, including the singles The Airport Line, Scratch the Surface and the beautiful Come Home. It’s a record that added to the brothers’ burgeoning reputation as some of the UK’s finest writers and producers of music. Mojo made it album of the month and it received great reviews from Pitchfork, Uncut and the Guardian. Such was the acclaim for the record that Peter put a band together and toured the UK, USA and Europe. But it was only ever intended to be a one off and, come the end of 2008, The Week That Was was no more with the vinyl deleted and no prospect of the songs ever being played live again.
So it is with great pleasure that Memphis Industries announces that The Week That Was will be reissued for the first time to celebrate the 15 year anniversary of the album’s release It has been remastered by David Brewis for additional audio clarity and comes on clear vinyl.
“In these crop-to-fit times, omnivorous, visionary pop is at a premium, and there's all the more reason to prize an omnivorous visionary pop record like the Week That Was”.
***** MOJO
“Brewis constructs songs with architectural scale and precision in its own prim, nostalgic, English way, it’s dazzling stuff”. 8/10 Uncut
“Never mind the retro-gazing moniker The Week That Was is a band you need to hear now” 8.2 Pitchfork

Shedir is Sardinian ambient producer Martina Betti and Before the Last Light is Blown is her 3rd full-length. The album follows her two previous collections released by French-Canadian shadow ambient imprint Cyclic Law. Betti's output has been strongly shaped by the juxtapositional nature of the island she calls home. A beautiful Mediterranean island that is also home to a petroleum refinery's and its significantly haunting presence. There is conflict in that ideal, and Betti's music has always displayed a sense of beauty, yet with ominous undertones. With Before the Last Light is Blown, Betti focused on the transience of life as a means of inspiration. It is human nature to move forward, consume, and always reach the next goal and to never give much thought to the briefness of our time here. The impermanence of life may seem like a dark topic, but to the contrary, pausing to think of such brevity could allow us to see the beauty we are missing in our endless need to fulfill and consume. Betti takes us to a dark place only to show us the beauty within, a vital constant in her output as shedir.

OVERVIEW
Debut solo album from Wobbler’s Lars Fredrik Frøislie! Fitting perfectly into the 70s prog-rock tradition where the keyboardist makes a solo album between the band albums, this is music Frøislie has been doing, mostly alone, during the pandemic. Had it not been for the pandemic, much of the material would probably have ended up on a new Wobbler album - but then run through the Wobbler grinder and with English lyrics. In other words, this is unpeeled and raw, as spontaneous as possible without going through too many rounds of processing. Trying to preserve the impulsive - much of what you hear is improvised, and one-takes (preferably with playing errors and piano strings that break and the like). Trying to preserve the human aspect to a large extent, avoiding click tracks, auto-tune, MIDI or too much technology. Expect lots of old analogue keyboards such as cembalo, Mellotron, MiniMoog, Yamaha CP70 and Hammond organ.
Four tunes; Four stories. The first song "Rytter av dommedag" is themed around Ragnarok, when King Rakne awakens in his large burial mound outside Romerike and, together with the old gods, creates real mischief. The second song “Et sted under himmelhvelvet” is dreamy, possibly set in a Renaissance garden near Florence or Arcadia. But in principle it can be anywhere where it feels good to be. It is partly about travelling to a place and feeling that you have been there before - only to find out that you had ancestors who lived there long ago.
The third song "Jærtegn" opens in a frenzy, with a horse and cart speeding through the forest. The wagon overturns at the same time as there is a solar eclipse, and the riders become eternal wanderers in the dark forest, only visible to us now and then like the northern lights, as they vainly stretch their arms towards the sun in the hope of finding their way home. The final song “Naturens Katedral” is a depiction of the Norwegian mountains in winter where the cold is bitter, and blizzards and avalanches abound. It is also a search for bygone times when life was more basic out in the wilderness.

TV Smith And Richard Strange - A DFFRNT WRLD
TV Smith, frontman of The Adverts and Richard Strange, frontman of Doctors of Madness release “A DFFRNT WRLD”, a DOUBLE CD set of songs for the Digital Age. A collection of fist-pumping, toe-tapping rants by two of Britain’s finest songwriters. The two met in 1976 and were firm fans of each other’s bands. They started writing together in 1977, and Record Store Day 2021 saw the release of their sell -out vinyl album 1978, a collection of songs written by the two when their respective bands hit the buffers in that year. Encouraged by the success of the vinyl release, the two discussed the possibility of re-imagining and re-recording the songs in a world that has changed beyond recognition since 1978. Produced by Strange and with some tracks mixed by Martyn Ware and Tom Gillieron, A DFFRNT WRLD flexes its musical and lyrical muscles like a digital-age superhero, and speaks loud and clear to all generations.. Their fans are as diverse as their music from Henry Rollins, Joe Elliott and Julian Cope to Vic Reeves, Tom Robinson, Neil Gaiman and Atilla the Stockbroker. This release shows beyond argument they were two of the most visionary artists of their generation. (“GREAT…” Joe Elliott, “GREAT…” Henry Rollins, “GREAT…” Tom Robinson, “GREAT…” Robin Denselow).

To call Current Affairs a Glasgow band may initially seem misdirection. Though Joan Sweeney (ex-Rose McDowall’s Band, Aggi Doom, The Royal We) is a lifer, Sebastian Ymai (Comidillo Tapes, Pissy, Anxiety) came from Chile via York, recently relocating to Berlin in 2021, and new member Gemma Fleet (The Wharves, Order of the Toad, Dancer) alongside Andrew Milk (Shopping, Pink Pound) were persuaded to leave London for the ‘second city’ after touring through with previous bands. However, Glasgow is the heart and hub of the band ’s music, musical life and the place where Off the Tongue was solidified and produced.
Their current line up formed in 2020, but the four have been circling each other for years, touring and playing with their previous bands within the close UK network of DIY music.
Following on from 2019’s singles collection, Object & Subject, the wait for their debut full-length may belie the urgency of its sound. Songs that were written in pieces over a long time and distance, but fully formed in the instant of the recording room across just a few days by producer Ross McGowan at Chime Studio. These new songs feel a little brighter than their previous offerings, yet still hold true to their propulsive and caterwauling sound. Still embryonic in the most exciting way that that can be. Current Affairs ’ music straddles new-wave pop and gothic post-punk in the way that you should expect a Glasgow-Berlin band to do so: with grit and panache.
Written from within the world of crumbling services, broken bonds and wounded spirits, Off the Tongue rolls off an ecstatic rage, filled with hope for you, them and everyone else. It ’s a rallying cry away from hopelessness, forgiving your fears and laying them to waste. Their album holds a place for you to be angry and to be focussed. In lieu of having anything else, we ’ve always got each other, and an uncertain future is open game for us too.

They’d respectively put out critically acclaimed albums but due to extenuating global circumstances, the real-world implications of those records were yet to be seen. Ana’s debut LP, Because of a Flower, released in fall 2020, trades in both ethereality and directness, stretching timeless pop and R&B forms into shimmering ambient magic. When the Bay Area-born, Mills-trained artist sings, on record or live, time slows down and we enter a languorous yet ecstatic present. The second album from Queens-based deep reggaeton innovator DJ Python, Mas Amable, also subverts easy temporality. Released in spring 2020, Mas Amable floats in liminal space—not quite a dance record, a downtempo record, nor an ambient record—unfurling at a wistful pace, naturally suited for a strange period when each day felt the same yet wildly different. Well-loved albums aside, no one was playing shows, and a general listlessness and disconnection prevailed. Roxanne had recently moved to New York, and while the pair had previously interacted online and expressed admiration with each others’ work, they were now able to meet in person for the first time. A quiet understanding developed between the two artists on their initial hangs – they drove around the outskirts of NYC, listening to Telegram by Björk, HTRK, Portishead, all manner of melancholy acoustic indie songs. They pulled over in Filipino neighborhoods to eat. Periods of volubility were punctuated by silence, laughter interspersed with wide-eyed pondering. For Brian and Ana, studio experimentation was the instinctive extension of a friendship finding its feet. The songs were taking shape. Dreamy, densely layered drum programming and atmosphere, redolent of Seefeel and Boards Of Canada, washed against jungle and oddball ambient landscapes. The writing process was entirely collaborative. Later that fall, the duo traveled back to Brooklyn for a last round of sessions with engineer and producer Al Carlson (Oneohtrix Point Never, Jessica Pratt). Their longtime friend CZ Wang (Parquet Courts, Huerco S.) mixed and finalized the songs in early 2023, and then a name for the project materialized. Natural Wonder Beauty Concept was “something Ana saw in the universe.” The self-titled album does not resemble the previous work of either artist – Ana’s celebrated ~~~ EP and album; Piñeyro’s various releases as DJ Python and DJ Wey or his recent EP with Ela Minus . Instead, it’s a sui generis work built block by block over two years. It’s the longest DJ Python has ever worked on a record, and the shortest period of time Ana has ever dedicated to a project.

OVERVIEW
Dear Departed, the second album from Burton, arose from a time of rebirth. In the last few years, the Los Angeles-based singer basically started over. He temporarily abandoned the life he’d built in LA to live in Utah where he grew up, moving again to hole up in a cabin on a rural northern California farm. Sam describes the album as being wracked with pain and loss, and he spends much of the time saying goodbye to a version of himself.
With production from Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price), Burton achieves a sound that never descends into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. Like Sam and his band are crammed onto the corner stage of a smoke-filled bar in a long-lost time. Exemplified best by lead single Long Way Around, smoldering melodies are met again and again with ripples of piano and swells of orchestration – headlined by Sam’s evocative, velvetlined vocals.

Booker Little Out Front
The Definitive Vinyl Reissue Of The Definitive Jazz Cult-Classic
Recently Rated 9.3/10 And Deemed “Crucial” By Pitchfork
Features legends Ron Carter, Max Roach, and Eric Dolphy
180-gram Vinyl Cut From The Original Analog Tapes By
Bernie GrundmanRecorded in , just months before his shocking death at age , Out Front is considered a masterpiece that mapped out a new future for rising star Booker Li le . . . and jazz music itself. Praised as “ one of the great records of its period” in The Penguin Jazz Guide and called “ one of the most creative and technically accomplished trumpet-players of all time” by Terence Blanchard, the reputation of this album and its creator have taken on near mythical proportions since its release
Booker Li le was a conservatory-trained composer and trumpet player whose education and first-hand experiences with Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Max Roach gave him a rare confidence to develop his own style and push music’s boundaries at an age when most musicians would still be imitating their idols and developing their chops. We can only imagine where he would have taken jazz had he lived longer, but Out Front remains his parting gift to the jazz canon

Little Richard’s one-of-a-kind career veered wildly from the sacred to the profane, but everything he did was profound; he was one of the greatest gospel and rock and roll singers of all time. And you can scale the dizzying heights of both sides of the man’s mountainous talent on this 15-track collection, which brings his Atlantic and Reprise singles back to vinyl, almost all for the first time since they originally came out on 45s. Richard recorded and self-produced the Atlantic material in 1962 and leased it to the label for release the following year, right before his return to rock and roll with two triumphant UK tours. Only “Crying in the Chapel” has seen reissue since; the other three tracks (esp. “Hole in the Wall” and “Travelin’ Shoes”) hit that glorious balance between spiritual fervor and emotional frenzy that only he could pull off. The Reprise material dates from 1970 to 1972 and was helmed by famed Specialty producer Bumps Blackwell as well as by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Quincy Jones (“Money Is” from the soundtrack to The Heist), with musical contributions by legendary Richard sidemen Lee Allen and Earl Palmer as well as folks like Travis Wammack. The non-LP side “Shake a Hand (If You Can)” is the rarity, but tracks like “Freedom Blues,” its B-side “Dewdrop Inn,” and “Mockinbird Sally” testify that Richard’s brilliance remained unabated. Mastered, like many of our Real Gone singles collections, by Aaron Kannowski, The Complete Atlantic & Reprise Singles features liner notes by Little Richard expert Bill Dahl, and comes in ruby red vinyl. A timely release to go along with the new Little Richard documentary!
DELTA SWAMP ROCK
Sounds From The South: At The Crossroads Of Rock, Country & Soul
Long out of print (10 years!), this new edition of Soul Jazz Records' classic Delta Swamp Rock, features a killer all-star line-up of seminal artists who all first blended rock, soul and country together to create a stunning new sound of southern American music in the 1970s.
Featuring the Allman Brothers, Dan Penn, Leon Russell, Tony Joe White, Johnny Cash, Bobbie Gentry, Big Star, Link Wray, Area Code 615 and loads more!
This album comes in a classic black vinyl edition and as a superb indies exclusive limited-edition double gold vinyl release, complete with extensive original sleevenotes, interviews and exclusive photography, all spread over a 12-page full-size magazine and two bespoke inner sleeves. The works!
Delta Swamp Rock is an interstate southern road-trip through the United States of America where country, rock and soul met at the crossroads - an exploration of the musical and cultural links between the cities of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Nashville in the 1960s and 70s.
At the start of the 1970s, a new type of music emerged out of the southern states of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. Southern rock, the creation of young blue-collar white Americans, blended rock, soul, country and blues music together to present a new vision of the south – a post-civil rights southern identity complete with a celebration of the regions natural landscape and its way of life.
The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd epitomised the definitive southern rock groups – a mixture of bluesrock and country with a southern rebelliousness and attitude. Unfortunately both The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd were to be struck by tragedy, which would affect the movement’s rise and fall.
The backstory to southern rock is the fact that a number of the people involved in its creation had been central to the production of southern soul music in the 1960s mainly in Memphis, Tennessee, and the small town of Muscle Shoals (population around 10,000) deep within the bible-belt, liquor-free, deeply segregated state of Alabama, creating 100s of R&B hits on an almost daily basis.
Here in Muscle Shoals, with its proximity to Memphis and Nashville, an all-white group of in-house musicians, (famously referred to by Lynyrd Skynyrd in the song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ as the ‘Swampers’), created countless classic soul records for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Clarence Carter and more during the 1960s.
This album charts the rise and fall of southern rock from its funky swamp roots in southern soul to its phenomenal success in the first-half of the 1970s, including its influence on Nashville’s ‘outlaw’ country and tracing it right back to the arrival of rock and roll in the 1950s - the first meeting of black and white American music at the crossroads.
"An impeccable collection of Southern Rock" THE GUARDIAN (*****)
"Soul Jazz Records compilations are always worthwhile because of the care and detail they put into these nuggets of musical archaeology. There is not a bad track on Delta Swamp Rock. Southern rock continued the tradition of racial integration through music, that began in Memphis with rock and roll, combining soul, gospel, country and rock to come up with something thatwas, frequently, groovy in the extreme."
THE TIMES
"An ambitious document of the tension between conservative musical aesthetics and breakout rock’n’roll styles that characterised the early 1970s inhe ritance of blues, soul and Country in the post-psychedelic South."

No Vacation - Intermission
Info:
No Vacation began their wavy-gravy dream-pop journey in 2015 with a pair of successful mixtapes that quickly established a cherishable sonic identity of twangy nostalgia and cruisey shoegazing Not long after the release of the Amo XO and Summer Break mixtapes, the budding San Francisco group disbanded inde nitely, playing among different lineups under various monikers before rebanding in 2017 under the name No Vacation
Although previously identi ed as "novice" in spite of the band’s enviable resume, No Vacation's surf-tinged talents and overall career clearly shatter such terse illusions Impressively, No Vacation has maintained its core lineup over the years, keeping in tact the quintessence of their sound a calm, warm exuberance draped with Sab Mai's signature subdued vocal style
Featuring album artwork by vocalist of No Vacation, Sab Mai. Insert sleeve picturing photo of band leaning on each other next to a No Vacation logo on a pink and yellow background. Lyrics on back of sleeve, along with a dedication.
