This Issue: Tim Putnam from Partisan Records
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I was always drawn to music. I played music, but was never very good at it. So, those who can’t do, teach… and those who can’t teach work in the music industry.
When and where did the label begin?
We started it out of my apartment in Brooklyn, NY in 2006.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the Leonard Cohen song, The Partisan.
How has the label changed since it started?
We’ve added more people, and signed more bands, and though the ethos and mission of the label has evolved, the spirit has remained the same.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area?
How is this reflected in your releases?
We have our main offices in Brooklyn and London, though we have people working / satellite offices in LA, Virginia, Berlin, etc… and teams globally throughout the world. So I wouldn’t say our releases are necessarily tied to a specific geographical area. Great music comes from all over, and so do our artists.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
It is a mix.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
I never wanted to be the biggest label. I wanted us to
keep improving what we do, for the artists we do it for. I also wanted the label to be a place where people who share a passion for great art could work, grow, and pursue their own dreams. Ultimately, if I do my job right, I’ll put myself out of a job. I think those ambitions have just become more solidified over the years.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
I wouldn’t because I think everyone is different given our roster, which is eclectic.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
The emergence of digital / streaming.
If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
It would be called Party-san Records and we’d release music about partying and such.
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
As a safe harbor for humans before AI took over.
I’ll set the scene – we’re all passed out face-down in the lawn of the first Bush term, scratching our heads after 9/11 and wondering how much more dystopian it’s about to get. Ash hangs in the air as we march toward endless war, and the activities of the post-hippie, post-beat, post-punk, post-jazz, post-industrial, post-experimental bohemian underground flail against the avalanche with a mystic fire you can’t get your arms around, let alone bottle up for consumption. Jars of tears, rockets from another world. Sunburned Hand of the Man was a part of all that.
Sunburned appeared from time to time (occasionally at my invitation) in Western Massachusetts, a mongrel mob from Beantown, inscrutable in the extreme, their music governed by an internal logic, or by no logic, a bearded octopus with spider legs on stilts moonwalking with a limp. I’d see a set, then listen to a recording of it and swear that it was not the music I had witnessed earlier. As far as I can figure, the music actually had a mind of its own. And yet, in a shockingly conflicting truth, I knew in my heart that the music hadn’t changed – I had. These early encounters left me wondering why exactly these people were making this music, and very glad that they were.
They were driven by drums, bass, and guitars, and were obviously in love with groovy riffs, but to call them a rock band seemed even stupider than calling them a jam band. There were hand drums, shruti boxes, and plenty of moaning, but they were far from a hemp-bracelet-clad circle of evolutionary regressives spouting peace and love bullshit. There were weird electronics and some odd costumes once in a while, but it wasn’t anything resembling conceptual theater made for tight-assed, chinstroking academic prudes. They chewed through every leash imaginable, and went bolting off into the wilds of a confounding and glorious wilderness.
Headdress was the group’s first proper vinyl release and, appropriately, clarified absolutely nothing. Now it’s back, nearly old enough to walk into a bar and get toasted on cheap piss, ready to confront and confuse and enrapture and enlighten all over again.
Like Sunburned itself, you catch Headdress already in process. The needle hits the groove and it roars in out of nowhere, an affirmative “OH YEAH” heralding its arrival. The tracks bleed into one another, and the stylistic shifts in the edits can be sudden, but there’s a magic in the editing that mirrors the magic of seeing a live set. It coheres and evaporates at its own pace. Elements emerge, converge, diverge, divulge, and obscure. A riff might erupt, daring the rest of the swarm to hang on it, to join it, or to swirl it. The vocals are summoned sermons, by turns muffled and clear.
The iteration of the band we get here is true old school Sunburned. Over the years an audacious rogue’s gallery of maniacs has passed through the ranks, and it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that at one time there was a relatively tight-knit gallery of maniacs fusing together and forging the group’s sound and spirit. Most notable among this crew is the recently-departed Marc Orleans, to whom this reissue is dedicated. His bombastically loud, searing guitar leads were a defining feature of this era, and this record presents startling examples of the profound, crazed ecstasy he was capable of conjuring.
This reissue offers a snapshot in time, neon time, mylar time, slipping time, dripping time, stepping hither and yon, feet growing and vanishing like time with each welltimed step. Freedom isn’t real, but it’s everywhere, and we’re fools if we don’t try to grasp it during the cosmic windows when it makes itself briefly available.
Now everybody—

Shamir's art is a synthesis of the full spectrum of human emotion; sensual, furious, yearning, joyful and yet tethered together by a very distinct style (similarly entirely in a hyper-specific, fully autonomous, embodied expression of personhood.
On his forthcoming album, Homo Anxietatem, Shamir takes the Latin translation of the title, “anxious man”, and transmutes his anxiety to pop songs. The creation process serves as a balm or elixir, converting internal anxieties to an 11-track sonic playground.

Hailed as “one of the great, overlooked records of 1998,” by the New York Times, this worldwide debut of the Angolan artist Waldemar Bastos was recorded and produced by Arto Lindsay and David Byrne in New York. Its title, which means “blacklight” in Portuguese, is a hint to the powerful sorrow the music holds: Pretaluz is an elegiac response to the Angolan Civil War, drawing on influences near and far like the fado, semba, zouk, and morna, to create indelible songs. “With his dramatic pauses and dynamic vibrato rising above subtle rhythms picked out on nylon-string guitars, everything Mr. Bastos sings emerges as a lament of enormous sadness,” wrote the Times.
Now on vinyl for the very first time, this limited 25th anniversary edition of Pretaluz is a contender for the bestsounding record on Luaka Bop.

Mapache Swinging Stars
In the past, Mapache recording sessions have been pretty laid-back affairs, with friends coming and going, the sessions starting and stopping at the band’s discretion—as relaxed a process as the immaculately sunny vibes that their four albums would suggest. But on their dynamic and ambitious fifth album of cosmic-folk, Swinging Stars, Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch decided to take a trip and hunker down somewhere particularly special.
“It’s a pretty impactful place,” Finch says of the Panoramic House, the artist retreat where Swinging Stars was recorded. “It’s kind of dramatic. It’s a castle-y building on a hill, way up overlooking the Bay.”
Located in Stinson Beach in Marin County, California, the Panoramic House has recently hosted acts like My Morning Jacket, the War on Drugs, and Cate Le Bon, and was the ideal combination of scenic beauty and self-imposed confinement to allow Mapache to settle in for their most cohesive album yet. “That environment yields itself to a higher level of focus because everybody’s together for a week,” says Finch, explaining that the band stayed there during the process, sharing every bit of their time and energy on a shared vision. “We were all captive. No one could escape,” he laughs.
Swinging Stars, an album of calm, second-nature swagger, is the natural result of a band that’s existed in one form or another for its founders’ entire adult lives. Finch and Blasucci first met as students at La Cañada High School, just north of Los Angeles, where they both had a guitar class: “There wasn’t much supervision or anything,” remembers Blasucci. “It was really nice. And we got to just play guitars together.”
The two stayed friends through their college years—Finch went to Chico State and Blasucci spent two years as a missionary in Mexico—and eventually they ended up back in L.A., spending their days playing guitar together once again, just like old times. Working with producer/engineer Dan Horne (Cass McCombs, Allah-Lahs), they recorded four albums —2017’s Mapache, 2020’s From Liberty Street, 2021’s 3, and 2022’s Roscoe’s Dream. Often trading solos, and occasionally switching from English to Spanish, Finch and Blasucci are perfectly in sync together.
But the duo have also been developing their own personal voices in recent years as well—partially the result of the two of them living in separate cities for the first time in years. (Blasucci now lives in Ojai, and Finch in Malibu.) As Finch explains, that means the “meat and potatoes” of the songs were cooked up more on their own than they had been in the past. “What a Summer,” a slow-burn that sounds something like Bob Weir fronting Crazy Horse, is unmistakably Finch, for instance; “French Kiss,” with its Toussaint swing and Parsons shine, is Blasucci all the way. “Swinging Stars was probably the first Mapache record where each of us really leaned into our personal, distinct styles,” Blasucci explains.
Still, many of the songs on Swinging Stars are the result of a significant amount of group work on the road, sharpening and refining them, getting them just so before hitting the studio with their trusted collaborator Horne, who produced the set. Swinging Stars is also notable for its introduction of drummer Steve Didelot as a formal member of the band, with him playing on every track, and contributing an original song as well—“Reflecting Everything,” a cowboy-chord ballad sparkling with Finch and Blasucci’s guitars, and with Horne’s impeccable slide guitar.
There are also two special features: one from the Allah-Lahs’ Spencer Dunham, who plays bass on “French Kiss,” and another from David Rawlings, who graciously took the call to play acoustic guitar on the album’s finale, “Where’d You Go,” recording his part remotely. “He’s someone who Sam and I look up to in a pretty serious way,” Finch says. “So it was cool to have him.”
Mapache is so easygoing that their vibe belies their prolificness at times. Swinging Stars is their fourth album in as many years, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Blasucci chalks it up partly to the fact that, when you have two principal songwriters in a band, “the songs come in quickly and they stack up quickly.” It helps, too, that they’re just in the right place to be making music. “We’re just trying to make hay while the sun shines,” as Finch puts it. “None of us have any babies or anything and we’re all pretty committed to playing as much music as we can. And really focused on making something beautiful.”

If you’ve ever watched David Lynch’s classic 2001 film Mulholland Dr., you might just recognize the title of Pærish’s third full-length, You’re In Both Dreams (And You’re Scared). It’s a line spoken by one of the two men having a conversation in that movie’s incongruous diner scene. Pærish vocalist/guitarist Mathias Court was watching the film for maybe the tenth time last year, and that line stood out to him like it never had before.
“I was having a very rough year,” he says, “and watching that scene really made me think about how my life was divided into two things. I was trying to live for the music, but at the same time have a good job. I ended up burning out. So I was struck by that line because it really felt that that’s what was going on in my life. So watching the movie again kind of decided the name of the album for me.”
Given that Pærish was formed when Court was at film school with bassist Martin Dupraz, it’s little surprise that the band—now completed by guitarist Frédéric Wah and drummer Loic Fouquet—would use a cinematic reference for its title. After all, the first two records were peppered with them, and many of their songs started life by Court fiddling with his guitar while watching something in the hopes that he’d capture or channel the emotion of whatever was on the screen. This time around, the title is the only thing directly inspired by the moving image. Whereas on 2016’s Semi Finalists and 2021’s Fixed It All, Court would utilize other people’s art to draw parallels to how he was feeling, this time it was purely his own internal wranglings that influenced his songwriting.
At the heart of that was an uncertainty about the band itself. Unable to tour Fixed It All because of the pandemic, Court wondered if being in a band was worth it. They’d recorded that album with their dream producer, Will Yip, in Philadelphia, but what should have been cause for celebration was anything but.
“A year after recording Fixed It All, I still didn’t know when it was going to come out,” Court says, “and I just started writing sadder songs. It was actually very comforting to write when you had like two full months of doing nothing, and I started writing like I never had before.”
By December 2021, Court had demoed the whole album. Almost a year later, Pærish flew to Philadelphia to record it with Will Yip. The band’s familiarity with the producer, plus the fact he and Fouquet hit it off instantly, lends a natural confidence to this album that disproves the very insecurities that inspired it. In fact, it turned into the album Pærish have always wanted to make.
“When I listen to these songs,” says Court, “I almost don’t realize this is our album. I feel like we got even closer to our final form. This is the one we’ve been wanting since we were kids. I’m so proud of it.”Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, The Alternative, New Noise Magazine, DSCVRD, All Punked Up, Highlight Magazine, and more.

BONOBO
DIAL ‘M’ FOR MONKEY 20TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE
Release Date: 18th August 2023
Simon Green aka Bonobo presents the 20th Anniversary Edition of Dial M for Monkey, nine perfectly formed tracks on a perfectly formed album. Now housed in beautiful packaging, with a rotating viewfinder, cyrstal clear vinyl and newly designed inners, it's outer beauty matched the beauty contained within the music. From the opener, 'Noctuary', with its creepy stoned-Hammer feel, through the headnod sitar-funk of 'Flutter', on into the Rhodes-meets-Gamelan of 'D Song', the first third of the record sets out the tone for what is to follow – all beautifully melodic and perfectly assembled but with enough of a creeping undertow to stop the music becoming empty or saccharine. 'Change Down' is all double bass folk and cut-up drums, 'Wayward Bob' is a devilish waltz, while single 'Pick Up' is a straight funk ‘n’ flute throw down. 'Something For Windy' sounds like a dub of a postman on his rounds, 'Nothing Owed' is epic pastoralia, while 'Light Pattern' rounds things off with what sounds like the theme to the best TV programme never made. With all instruments played, sampled and sequenced by Green’s own fair hand, there is a consistency here, both within the tunes and across the record that crate diggers can only dream of.

Resolve acts in dialogue with the minimalist inspirations of the first Arnold Dreyblatt & The Orchestra of Excited Strings release, 1982’s Nodal Excitation in effect, looking beneath the hood of several decades of progression, reviewing and renewing the revolutionary intent of their foundation credo.
The reference points, then as now, include La Monte Young , Tony Conrad and Phill Niblock , as well as Jim O’Rourke , whose support for Arnold ’s music in the 1990s sparked new life. Konrad Sprenger, Joachim Schütz and Oren Ambarchi form the current Orchestra of Excited Strings , first initiated in Berlin in 2009 but the story of Arnold Dreyblatt ’s conception (a rhythmic drone played by Dreyblatt on a double-bass strung with piano wire, playing in concert with other stringed instruments performing in 20 unequal microtones per octave and changing key but keeping the same fundamental pitch) dates back to the 1970s, when Arnold evolved his interests in media arts to include acoustic sound while studying under Young and Pauline Oliveros before forming his first Orchestra in 1979 (from 1980 he studied with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University, where the second Orchestra was formed). Two years after Nodal Excitation was released on India Navigation, Arnold moved to Berlin, where the second Orchestra was formed. The release of Propellers In Love (1985, Künstlerhaus Bethanien/ Stasch 1986 Hat Art, reissued 2017 by Superior Viaduct), the opera project “Who’s Who in Central and East Europe 1933” and the release of Animal Magnetism (2010, 1995 Tzadik) demonstrated further developments in his music. After dexter’s cigar arranged for Nodal Excitation ’s first reissue on CD, Arnold returned to the United States to lead a new iteration of The Orchestra , (performing at Tonic on a bill with Tony Conrad and Jim O’Rourke) preserved on the 2002’s The Adding Machine (Cantaloupe Music).
Each phase of Arnold ’s music with The Orchestra of Excited Strings requires several overlapping periods of
gestation. In the initial writing of the music, the expectation is that the musicians be there to allow the instruments to sound; later, in playing the music with the orchestra, free interaction among the players results in the fixing of additional parts in the final pieces. And so, each Orchestra brings their selves to the project. In the case of Resolve , each of the members, as composers, producers, D.J.s, and artists in their own right, brought their own unique angles. Konrad Sprenger (aka Jörg Hiller)’s treatments involved solenoids, sine waves and a computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar (as well as a relentless style behind the drum kit and overseeing the sound production), while Joachim Schütz ’s individual conception of electronics and electric guitar and Oren Ambarchi ’s undeniable innovations with signal path work together with Arnold ’s Excited Strings bass as magnetic component parts of Resolve
Side one features three potent new compositions demonstrating the Orchestra’s unique feel incorporating rhythmic accents that act as microbeats within Dreyblatt ’s microtones, implying shuffling funk and metallic rock at times, yet never deviating from the driving intensity of the harmonic play. Side two is taken up by the piece “Auditoria,” in which Ambarchi and Sprenger ’s production methodologies turn the Orchestra inside out, working expansively backwards through harmonic overtones to Dreyblatt ’s original tempo in a mesmerizing spatial redistribution of the music. The music of Resolve uses a variety of vehicles to find avenues back to the inaugural intent of the Orchestra of Excited Strings
This effort is, in ways both tactile and inadvertent, a timely one. With over 40 years of work as a solo artist, collaborator, composer, educator and bandleader, and with his 70th birthday approaching, Resolve is an important expression for Arnold Dreyblatt . The album title’s tendency to mean different things is an indicator of the dynamic qualities of his music with The Orchestra of Excited Strings an evolution that continues to produce new dimensions in acoustic sound with every new release.

THE BETHS AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 2020
The anticipation is there in Elizabeth Stokes’ solo guitar riff under the opening lines of “I’m Not Getting Excited”: a frenetic, driving force daring a packed Auckland Town Hall to do exactly the opposite of what the track title suggests.
As the opener of The Beths’ Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 expands to include the full band, the crowd screeches and bellows. It’s a collective exhalation, in one of the few countries where live music is still possible.
The album title, and film of the same name, deliberately include the date and location, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce says. “That’s the sensational part of what we actually did.” In a midpandemic world, playing to a heaving, enraptured home crowd feels miraculous.
In March 2020, everything seemed on track for another huge year for The Beths. Home after an 18-month northern hemisphere tour, they had just finished recording sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers and were primed for more extensive touring. But within days, New Zealand’s lockdown split the band between three separate houses. All touring was cancelled.
“It was existentially bad,” Stokes says. As well as worrying about economic survival, they lost something crucial to the band’s identity: live performance. “It’s a huge part of how we see ourselves... What does it mean, if we can’t play live?”
The band found an outlet through live-streaming, returning to the do-it-yourself mentality of their early days to connect with a global audience. The album and film have their genesis in that urge to share the now-rare experience of a live show, as widely as possible.
The fuzzy-round-the-edges live-streams pointed the way aesthetically. Native birds, wonkily crafted by the band from tissue paper and wire, festoon the venue’s cavernous ceiling while house plants soften and disguise the imposing pipes of an organ. The presence of the film crew isn’t disguised: much of the camerawork is handheld; full of fast zooms and pans.
With much of the material still fresh, the band was less focused on re-invention than playing “a good, fast rock show”, Pearce says. The tempo is up on crowd favourites “Whatever” and “Future Me Hates Me” (released as a live single on its third anniversary) as both band and audience feed off the mutual energy in the room.
Certain songs have taken on special resonance post-Covid. Pearce has found “Out Of Sight”, a tender rumination on long-distance relationships, hits particularly hard with live audiences. Album closer “River Run” visibly brings Stokes to tears as a mix of achievement and relief kicks in. “You can finally relax at that point … You play the last note, breathe out a sigh and look up - and you’re in a giant room full of people happy and smiling.”

Every Lucius song is an act of enchantment, a spell cast by the indelibly harmonized voices of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. Onstage, the performance becomes an invitation to be witness to their transformation; the dance between two individuals becoming one voice, one vision and bound by psychic symmetry. And while the effect of this spectacle is hypnotic and gloriously strange, the songwriting continues to be the hand that reaches out from behind the curtain to hold the audience, bringing together everything that makes you nostalgic for the past, while looking to the future. |Lucius’ newest album ‘Second Nature’ produced by Brandi Carlile and Dave Cobb and featuring tracks “Next to Normal,” “Dance Around It” feat. The music Nondi_ makes is informed by footwork, breakcore and Detroit techno. However, as she's only experienced them via the internet, she has has filled the gaps with her imagination and consequently the music is rendered from a dreamlike solitude that feels adjacent to other internet genres such as vaporwave. Her tracks are gauzy and abstract, smeared with gentle melody, rusty tones and occasional shafts of sunlight, sometimes set to a distant pulse, sometimes collapsing as if the music itself is falling apart.
Of the album she says:
"Flood City Trax is music that captures the mood of living in a town like Johnstown, and more broadly the isolation of poverty. That's the environment these tracks came out of, after all. Johnstown is a very poor isolated small factory town in Western Pennsylvania which has a dark history of deadly floods, the most well known being the 1889 flood which was like something out of a horror story and the 1977 flood which the Triplin family survived. Johnstown has never moved past its floods, hence the nickname "Flood City". There's very little to do and every year the town shrinks more, and more buildings are knocked down or condemned. Everything is old but simultaneously the past seems like it has just disappeared."

The name Heatwaves describes the music well: Warm waves of delicious music, which give summer vibes even on a chilly November evening. The band who hails from Bergen, Norway, moves in a landscape of nostalgic indie and beckons slightly to jazz, soul and neo-psychedelia, where beats, chill and coziness are in focus. The philosophy is simple: If it sounds good to you, it becomes a song. Now they are ready to unleash their debut album “Kappa”.
In the band you will find a group of seasoned musicians who you may have seen on stage with artists such as Young Dreams, Miss Tati, John Olav Nilsen & Nordsjøen, Birgitta Alida, Lint, Shaman Elephant, Atari and more.

OVERVIEW
Sun’s Signature is the current project of vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and percussionist Damon Reece. Their stunning, self-titled debut EP was originally released as a Record Store Day exclusive in 2022.
Fraser and Reece’s early careers in some of the world’s most heralded musical groups are well documented. Elizabeth, the unforgettable voice of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil’s “Song to the Siren,” is also internationally recognized for her vocal contributions to Massive Attack’s trail-blazing ‘Mezzanine’ LP - most notably their biggest hit, “Teardrop”. Damon, the long-time drummer with political art-rock giants Massive Attack, also spent the ‘90s as a member of Spiritualized and Echo and the Bunnymen. He has also recorded and performed with Baxter Dury, Goldfrapp, The Flies, and Butch Vig’s 5 Billion in Diamonds & many more.
The songs on ‘Sun’s Signature’ have been ruminating in the background of Fraser and Reece’s lives in some form for 20+ years, ever since Cocteau Twins broke up in 1997. It marks the first artistic collaboration between these life and musical partners that isn’t a film score or soundtrack. This EP is the sound of a true creative partnership. Highly evolved, yet simultaneously primal - the music is an utterly original, compelling, and lush collection of songs that has developed through an Alice in Wonderland journey through life and music.
For this re-release the vinyl will be pressed on marbled yellow vinyl and on Compact Disc for the first time, with a bonus disc of remixes by John Grant, CUTS, Will Gregory, Gwenno, LUMP, and Hinako Omori.

CINDY WILSON REALMS
STREET DATE: AUGUST 25, 2023
• CINDY WILSON OF THE B-52S SOPHOMORE SOLO ALBUM
• LIMITED EDITION TURQUOIS VINYL
Cindy Wilson has always been on the forefront of music’s cutting-edge: As a founding member of The B-52's, she was a pioneer of the New Wave sound that redefined music in the 1970s and ‘80s. Cindy is known for her distinctly melodic voice and her remarkable ability to deliver powerful emotions in her music. She has made a fresh name for herself that extends beyond her band’s legacy, establishing herself as a singular force in her own right.
Nowhere is this more readily apparent than on Realms, Wilson’s spirited sophomore studio album and her most ambitious effort to date. Once again working with Suny Lyons (with Sterling Campbell contributing drums and Maria Kindt on strings), Wilson invites her audience on an immersive, enchanting ten-track journey that peels back the layers of our common humanity.
Realms demands our undivided attention as Wilson takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey through our own minds and souls. Through a series of colorful, dramatic outpourings and dynamic, finessed upheavals, it’s a carefully crafted record proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Cindy Wilson continues to have her fingers on the pulse of modern music. Pop in style and indie at heart, Realms is the next new wave of Wilson’s already storied legacy.
BUCK MEEK Haunted Mountain
For his latest solo album, Buck Meek, lead guitarist of Big Thief, went back to Texas with his band – Adam Brisbin (guitar), Austin Vaughn (drums), Ken Woodward (bass), Mat Davidson (pedal steel, vocals), and Dylan Meek (keys) - to record the eleven songs that make up Haunted Mountain over the course of two weeks at Sonic Ranch studio. Produced by Davidson and engineered and mixed by Adrian Olsen, the album follows Meek’s 2018 self-titled debut and 2021’s Two Saviors, with records as a part of Big Thief in-between - U.F.O.F. and Two Hands (2019), and Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (2022).
Haunted Mountain is about love and... something other. Something bigger than love, a soulfulness, or a soul seeking fullness. In the songs, five co-written alongside longtime friend and musical hero Jolie Holland and one set to the words of Judee Sill’s final journal entry, love often assumes a natural form, sometimes it becomes artificial, sometimes cosmic. It is a consciousness here, interacting with the lovers, watching them sometimes, becoming them sometimes. Yet romance is not the only form of love Haunted Mountain explores. The epic ‘Lullabies’ examines the inexhaustible connection between mother and son; a platonic bond appears in ‘Where you’re coming from’; and grief leads to communion with the dead in ‘Lagrimas’.
The songs were written in mountains; by cold springs in the Serra da Estrela of Portugal, on the submerged volcano of Milos in the Cyclades, Valle Onsernone in the Swiss Alps (where the cover photo was taken), and the Santa Monica range where Buck now calls home - all where his new love was born. “Love inhabits your environment, animates the inanimate, charging everything around you with a sense of meaning,” Meek says. Haunted Mountain asks, “is love a form of magic?”

CUMGIRL8
phantasea pharm
Made up of Lida Fox (bass), Veronika Vilim (guitar), Chase Lombardo (drums), and Avishag Rodrigues (guitar), the band started as an art collective in 2019 before coming together to create a boundary-less sound, drawing from the likes of ESG, Cocteau Twins, Suicide, CSS, B-52s, The Shangri-Las, Chris & Cosey, Madonna, and many more. As reflected in their name, cumgirl8’s work pushes against the status quo by satirizing themes in popular culture surrounding femme objectification, social media sensationalism, and capitalism. The band’s new EP and 4AD debut phantasea pharm takes both the conceptual and musical elements of their project to a whole new level; across the six tracks that make up phantasea pharm, the band is as raw and daring as ever.

Catch them live; their shows are one of the most immersive and engaging post-punk experiences to be had in this current generation of bands.
-Creem
NYC quartet cumgirl8 placed themselves at odds with the powers that be the second they gave their group its salacious name. It gets them booted from social media platforms and largely precluded from the pages of music’s major broadsheets, but their story doesn’t end with shock value. They may be provocateurs, but they also make a fiery brand of post-punk that would sound just as good under a tamer moniker.

Ratboys - The Window
Info:
Ratboys have been recording and releasing music for over a decade, but their newest album, The Window marks a number of rsts for the band For starters, it was the rst time they’d ever traveled outside their home base of Chicago to record an album, journeying to Seattle to work with producer Chris Walla for three weeks It was also the rst time they’d ever written an album collaboratively from start to nish, having added full-time members Sean Neumann on bass and Marcus Nuccio on drums in recent years The new approaches to writing and recording are immediately apparent on The Window, which showcases the fullest, most expansive version of Ratboys’ sound
Lyrically, The Window sees Steiner at her most personal, re ecting on love and grief with occasional humor and levity She frequently leans on windows as a theme the idea of an interrupted connection, the feeling of being near someone without being fully present Sometimes the looking-glass imagery is metaphorical, like on the nearly nine-minute epic, “Black Earth, WI,” or on the pounding lead single, “It’s Alive!” Other times, the windows are literal, like on the album’s titular centerpiece “I wrote that song a few days after the death of my grandma in June of 2020,” Steiner explains “She didn’t have Covid, but because of the pandemic my grandpa wasn’t able to visit her in person at the nursing home to say goodbye He ended up standing outside her room and saying goodbye through an open window A lot of the lyrics are direct quotes of things he said to her in those moments ”
After more than ten years and four studio albums together, The Window nally captures Ratboys as they were always meant to be heard expansive while still intimate, audacious while still tender But most importantly, The Window is the sound of friends operating as a single, cohesive unit “My dream ever since I started writing songs was to be in a band a proper band with a consistent lineup,” Steiner says “To nally have the chance to play with dear friends who are fully committed, it was all I could ever ask for ”

FAT TONY I WILL MAKE A BABY IN THIS DAMN ECONOMY
With I Will Make a Baby in this Damn Economy, Fat Tony embodies the kind of quixotic figure he would rap about; a singular entity who’s motivated, confident, and hungry; a perpetual-motionmachine locked in a staring contest with his country. It’s the latest album in his catalog produced entirely by L.A-based producer Taydex since 2020’s Wake Up. Later that same year Fat Tony released Exotica, and ever since he’s demonstrated he is in his own lane as a professional rapper with the mind of a magician, as quick to conjure an image as pull it out from under you, deftly maneuvering through so many details and references a listener feels as if they have witnessed the work of an illusionist. He paints these canvases inside of songs that rarely spill past three minutes; they’re pocket-sized diaries replete with acute observations, character studies, microdoses of storytelling, and single-minded ruminations on a topic that bud, blossom, and fade before too long. Fat Tony & Taydex’s I Will Make a Baby in this Damn Economy cements Tony’s status as someone whose albums are not so much lyrically-lyrical as they are picaresque.
As with any Fat Tony project, the bars are tight as ever, but are so fluid for the 34-yearold it’s almost easy to take for granted the details, warmth, and humanity inside his freeassociative tales of day-one friends who’ve passed, edgelord grifters who want to spit game, and nights on ketamine. Taydex’s production sprints through disparate yet simpatico styles, dipping its toes into Pi’erre Bourne-esque bass (see lead single “Spectacular”), house (“Loosen Up”), and even hyperpop. Meditations on loss and grief are woven throughout, but Tony throws a few curveballs as well: Consider “Alexis,” which sweetly reflects on a long-term platonic friendship. Taydex finds a Teddy Riley-indebted New Jack Swing groove just deep enough for the feeling to land and underlines the song’s sincere candor. This is the appeal of Fat Tony writ-large: his boisterous voice and genial personality invite you to the party, then you stick around to hear what he’s saying, which is frequently more introspective and complex than one assumes.
Written and recorded in Taydex’s new studio in North Hollywood, Tony says, “We had much more freedom and flexibility in making this album and you can hear it. It felt like a family project.” If the album is comfortable and loose, it is also dense and substantial. The album’s final two tracks contextualize the immediacy of what came before it—the mezcal with ices drank, Paul Wall swangin’ through to drop knowledge, the Polaris Prize-winning rapper Cadence Weapon providing a vibe check. “Make a Baby” accounts for Tony who’s seen everything, and knows he’s met the one to be a father with, and yet chooses to take his time to get it done. Taydex’s beat recalls turn-of-the-century R&B and the millennial promise of an endless good time. Somber closer “Jasper, TX” is Tony coming to grips with the story of James Byrd, Jr., a Black man from East Texas dragged to his death by three white supremacists in 1998. These songs are not only trademarks of Tony’s fastidious rapping—they are deeply personal examples of his approach to artistry and life itself, where every decision is made in the shadow of history. It’s here the mission statement of I Will Make a Baby in this Damn Economy comes into focus—you get the sense he means it, he’s ready for it, he’ll fight for it. He’s waiting to take the world at its word.

Huerco S. Colonial Patterns
10th Anniversary Edition LP
Colonial Patterns, the debut full-length album from electronic music stalwart Huerco S., captures a wide-eyed artist learning the tools of their trade before mercurial ascendence. This ten year anniversary, double LP edition arrives on Bone Color vinyl in an ultra limited pressing of 1000 copies.
“Kansas City producer Brian Leeds’ impressive debut album as Huerco S follows a handful of 12”s and cassettes. Filtering his work through yesterday’s technology, he makes techno folk music in the traditional sense: a music that carries remnants of the past into the future.” - Pitchfork (7.9)

“While so much of today's gritty beat experiments feel urban, ‘Colonial Patterns’ feels rural, like a sort of corrupted pastoral…. As a collection of tracks made from short loops and otherworldly samples, Colonial Patterns is an easy fit for Oneohtrix Point Never's label, Software Records.” - Resident Advisor

“It’s top-drawer stuff, taking the new age ambience and rugged, smoke-choked house rhythms du jour and turning them inside out, opening up new zones of dubwise introspection. ‘Plucked From The Ground, Towards The Sun’ is a 90s Chain Reaction cut inspected through a smeared microscope lens, but it’s the minor key shifts and almost Autechre-ish edits of ‘Quivira’ that really get the show on the road, building to ‘Anagramme Of My Love', the oneiric house choppage of ‘linzhiid’ and the Newworldaquarium-esque codeine boogie of ‘Ragtime U.S.A. (Warning)’ - a total kille r.”Boomkat

B l a c k i ty B l a c k B l a c k I s B e a u t i f u l is the very first solo record by Fay Victor, whose 30-year-long music career has covered everything from House, New Music, Jazz/Blues and Free Improvisation. Her deep history with dance music, her genreless output, and her lived experience as a Black woman in the world shaped the brand new process she used to create this prismatic album which touches on all the decades of her life like diary snapshots. It’s a mesmerizing collection of composed work that could only be made by an extraordinary improviser.
From hearing the raw, almost gospel vocal style over a heavy beat of Donna Summer and Sylvester, to obsessing over shows like Soul Train, Solid Gold, and Dance Fever on TV, to experiencing the sweat and groove, the freedom of bodies moving at NYC clubs like Danceteria, The Loft, and the Paradise Garage – her life changed forever. As she was developing as a jazz singer in Amsterdam in the 90s, she danced to trance music in clubs like Mazzo and The Soul Kitchen. She landed on the Billboard charts with a club hit “You Make Me Happy” in ’91. Stoned on the sacred dance floor, Fay found ecstasy in the moving body, the groove, the beat.
As she entered deeper into the world of jazz, she was attracted to the rhythmic qualities of Thelonious Monk, Eddie Harris, Eric Dolphy, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Betty Carter, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Nicole Mitchell, Milford Graves, Julius Hemphill, Charles Mingus, Herbie Nichols. Their confrontational rhythm sends her soul leaping, connecting her back to her clubheadheart.
With Mavin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” as a template, Fay started thinking about how her solo album might unfold. She sang, played keyboards, added textures and further dimensions with no other humans, without electronics. That was her process. Thoroughly creative, composed with music and words straight from her spirit.

Auger Incorporated is a career spanning triple vinyl / double CD compilation of the legendary Brian Augers’ music Lauded and loved by artists as diverse as Mose Allison to Emma-Jean Thackray, his tracks have been sampled by Mos Def & Common, his original compositions covered by Sarah Vaughan, Richard 'Groove' Holmes and The Main Ingredient He is a Grammy nominee and recipient of a US Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition for his ‘contribution to the American art form of Jazz’
Auger Incorporated includes classic album tracks, rarities and live concerts performances, some of which have never released before from Brian’s ground-breaking, genre busting catalogue, and reaches back to his early 60’s debut as an poll-winning jazz piano prodigy, his transformation into swinging London’s premier Hammond Organ player via his groups’ The Steam Packet and Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity, and his flagship 70’s band – The Oblivion ExpressAuger's blend of jazz, R&B and pop idioms saw him credited as one of the earliest protagonists of jazz fusion
Particularly rare highlights include The Steam Packet’s blistering instrumental version of Robert Parkers’s R&B smash Watch Your Step, the 2 tracks by Sonny Boy Williamson backed by Brian The Trinity with a young Jimmy Page as guest, the live 1960’s versions of Save Me & Red Beans & Rice and the recently unearthed version of the jazz dance classic Jeannine featuring the unmistakable voice of Julie Driscoll.
From The Oblivion Express era, there’s an intense and driving live version of Freedom Jazz Dance, and the alternative mix/radio edit of Marvin Gaye’s Inner City Blues, Brian’s mid 80’s Italo-disco hit ‘Night Train To Nowhere’ – Auger Incorporated has something for the die hard fan and all those new to this extraordinary musicians unmatchable 60 year career.

DRAG CITY PENAL SYSTEM
Roll the tape! Roll whatever you got, if you got ‘em! Rock and roll! It’s time to take a trip to Prison. You ready to go Upstate?
Nah...you’re not. Unless...are you ready to set yourself free, no matter what the consequences? Cause if you are, then yeah, you’re ready to party with Prison.
Straight outta Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York City, USA, THE WORLD, Prison is a state of mind, an experience, a loose collective, a band, a jam band and a bunch of psychedelic dudes who aren’t your average bunch of jambanders. All that, all at once, ALL THE TIME. You get what you’re dealing with here?
No...you don’t. The only way to REALLY get it is to go to Prison -–and if you’re not from greater NYC and haven’t showed at any of the shows, here’s your best bet: their breakout album, Upstate. And whatta breakout! So high, you can’t get under it; so wide, you can’t get over it! How wide? Every song has two titles, that’s how wide. And almost everybody sings, like, all the time. That wide.
Sure, you can break down the numbers -– five guys, five songs and four sides of vinyl in one gatefold sleeve -– but that won’t get you Upstate, either. Prison is the sound of everybody in the room figuring out where to go, individually and collectively. As they go through it, the meaning changes, the destination changes, the words mean something different. It’s meaning and no meaning, rising and falling, sinking and flying on the back of something massive cacophonized by three guitars, four vocals, a bass and drums. A lot of information bouncing around and enough time to really get you out of yourself! Take a look at the titles: each one a dichotomous inquest that the assembled Prison-ers march upon with fervor, glee, vengeance -– a whole spectrum of feels and perspectives woven into the jam for you to see.
This’ll take you places!
The Prison population changes with the seasons, and during the season this album was recorded, Sarim Al-Rawi, Mike Fellows, Sam Jayne, Matt Lilly and Paul Major were in Prison. Sarim you might know from Liquor Store, Mike’s made a bunch of scenes and records as Mighty Flashlight, Sam, who passed away in 2020 (R.I.P., brother) was in Love as Laughter –- and Paul Major you know from Endless Boogie, who Matt had roadied for -– and despite being “just a skateboarder who loves music” with no previous experience on the drums, he and Sarim inaugurated the Prison experience, like, seven years ago. Since then, it just fell together and it keeps doing so. A free thing called Prison.
Just go for it! Follow the signs, listen up, have fun. That’s how Prison got Upstate.

RedeyePigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - King Of Cowards
Rocket Recordings LP Regal Splatter
LAUNCH321LP 5056321672698
Delivering therapy through noise. The Guardian One of the best hard rock bands in the UK. ” Uncut “Momentous.” Kerrang!
“The real deal.” The Quietus “Utterly enthralling.” Classic Rock “Double dipped in acid.” Metal Hammer “These Pigs are flying.”
MOJO “Massively brilliant.” BBC 6 music “Revel in extreme heaviness.” Pitchfork
Building on the momentum this band has built since their January 2017 debut Feed The Rats, this opus sees them entering a new phase as a sleeker and still more dangerous swineherd. The Iggy-esque drive to dementia, Sabbath-esque squalor and Motörhead-style dirt may still be present and correct, yet the songs are leaner, the long-drawn-out riff-fests sharpened into addictive hammer blows and the nihilis tic dirges of yore alchemically transformed into an uplifting and inviting barrage of hedonistic abandon. “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig,and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which ” So George Orwell noted at the end of a certain slim volume. King Of Cowards is nothing less than just such a metamorphosis, one in which - in a blur of primal urges and beastly physicality - this band shows us just which animals are really in charge of the farm. This 2023 repress is available on a special, limited edition ‘Regal Splatter’ vinyl.

"When everyone left NYC, the sewer opened and we crawled out. ” Prolific Brooklyn institution The Men return with their ninth studio album which marks a return to the more scuzzy and abrasive rock ploughed over their decade and a half spent coursing through the grimy sewers of NYC. Here, nocturnal proto-punk meets a timeless, all-guns-blazing rock’n’roll gusto. That the album leans into a more primitive, back -to-basics sound owes largely to the way in which was forged, an earlier version of the record scrapped in favour of four people playing in a room together. “The New York City album was revised, reorganized and shaped until it became clear that things fall into place like the hammer driving the nail or the scythe's swipe through the tall grass.” The end result is a series of cuts played live and recorded to 2" tape in Travis Harrison ’s (Guided By Voices, Built To Spill) Brooklyn studio.
‘New York City’ is a record that doesn’t stop moving for a second, packed full of the kind of energy you can only really capture in a live setting. “These songs became the blood of the band as the band could only exist for and of these songs. There was no place else to hang their hats.. ”

Toronto 1970, three young guys, heavily influenced by Blue Cheer & Hendrix, get together to form a band. Featuring Charles Gadsby on guitar & vocals, Rick Skol on drums & vocals, and Drew Tjernstrom on bass, the nascent outfit call themselves 'Gadsby & Skol'. After much rehearsing they start to play local shows, but soon decide they need to do some more work on their sound. In the end, the project stalls and they go their separate ways. Then in 1995 Charles Gadsby finds an old rehearsal tape, and contacts the other two guys to suggest that they get back together to record the album they would have made back in 1970 if they'd ever got a recording deal. Using the rehearsal tape as a template, they re -create their original sound and a little while later the recordings you have here are completed, and an album's worth of material is ready and waiting. The album eventually makes its' one and only brief appearance on a limited edition British CD in 2001. So now here it is on vinyl for the very first time, with a new, improved sleeve, just how it was meant to be. So if you like Thunder & Roses, Blue Cheer, Third Power, Sir Lord Baltimore and other such hard rocking psych guitar bands, you're going to love this! That's as close to a promise as we can make.
