The New Year's resolution checklist seems close at hand when we look back at the beginning of the year. In fact, almost anything is possible.

A six pack for June? Easy. Read 100 books? Make it 102. Finally, conquer that crushing mountain of debt? Totally doable. Except, if 2020 has taught us anything, it's that life is unpredictable and we can't always keep all the New Year's resolutions we set out to achieve. Some of us fail by April and at least 80% of us fail by the second week of February.

Setting lofty goals and feeling overwhelmed by the pressure we put on ourselves is one of the most common reasons New Year's resolutions fail.

But there's a way to prevent that from happening in 2023: Let's start by setting small, achievable goals. Try these New Year's resolution ideas to stay on track and meet your self-improvement goals.

Do one new thing a month

New Year's resolutions often crash and burn because they try to tackle too much too quickly. But you can take things as easy as you want. The key to setting good New Year's resolutions is to simply move at your

own pace.

Set a goal once a month to do something you've never done before. That could mean eating at a new restaurant, gardening, learning salsa, or even painting your room a different color. As small or big as it is, it's still something to look back on at the end of the year.

Save a small percentage of your paycheck

When you live paycheck to paycheck, you may be tempted to splurge the moment your bank account replenishes. But impulse

Being kind to others can be easier than being kind to yourself, but remember that you don’t need an excuse to justify why you treat yourself to something that makes you feel good.

Change your appearance

Losing weight and exercising are among the

top 10 New Year’s resolutions. But fitness resolutions tend to be short-lived because most people expect quick results. You may actually notice some progress after just a few weeks of consistent training and clean eating, but shedding the “extra 50 pounds” and learning to maintain your weight could take a few months.

On the bright side, there are easier ways to transform your appearance and see instant results. Take a few inches off your hair, try a new hair color, get a tattoo, or just change your personal style. Make 2023 the year you decide to embrace bold colors, mix prints, and find the courage to wear outfits you always wanted but never thought you could pull off.

Try a new recipe every week

Sometimes at the end of a long day all you want to do is order pizza. And that is understandable. Life can get in the way of cooking every day. Either you don’t have time or you have social obligations. But setting a New Year’s resolution to cook just one new recipe does three things: You save money when eating at home, the food is better for you because you know exactly what’s in it, and you get a chance to brush up on your cooking skills.

Beyond getting to know the processes in depth, we sought to get to know the person in depth, and Mary kindly opened the doors of her office for us, just as she would with the doors of your own home.

Sus inicios

Mary Cárdenas inició su vida en California, como muchos de nosotros, hijas de inmigrantes mexicanos que llegaron a este país en busca de un sueño y oportunidades. Su padre fue cocinero y su madre costurera. Con el esfuerzo de su trabajo llevaron adelante a sus cuatro hijos.

“Y la razón que siempre andaba ayudando a la gente y yo creo por eso nosotros sacamos ese don de ella” dijo al explicar que su madre la acompañó a vivir en St. Louis una temporada. “En ese tiempo ella comenzó solita a limpiar casas eso comenzaba su negocito porque siempre ella era de las que yo voy a trabajar por mí misma, yo no voy a trabajar por nadie más, siempre hacia eso es lo que más admiraba de mi mamá” comentó Mary.

Por el gran amor y enorme ejemplo que su madre le dio, su fallecimiento fue uno de los momentos más dolorosos de su vida.

“Sí fue muy duro, muy duro para nosotros para mis hijos, porque eran los consentidos de ella y ellos la adoraban”.

Mary nos compartió también que su padre se reunió con su madre en el más allá hace seis años. La pérdida de sus padres ha sido para ella una pérdida irreparable, de la que solo en compañía de sus hijos y sus nietos puede encontrar consuelo.

The beginning

Mary Cárdenas began her life in California, like many of us, daughters of Mexican immigrants who came to this country in search of a dream and opportunities. Her father was a cook, and her mother a seamstress. With the effort of her work, they raised her four children. Her father and her mother were the first examples of perseverance and goodwill in her life,

“What I remember the most about her is that she was always very luchona, she always walked the world; it didn’t stop her, she always walked by herself, she always defended herself, she always got ahead alone,” she shared with us.

“And the reason that she was always helping people, and I think that’s why we got that gift from her,” she said, explaining that her mother accompanied her to live in St. Louis for a while.

“At that time, she started cleaning houses by herself, which started her little business because she was always one of those who would work for me; I will not work for anyone else; she always did that, which is what I admired the most about my mother,” Mary commented.

Because of the great love and enormous example that her mother gave her, her death was one of the most painful moments of her life. “Yes, it was very hard for us for my children because they were her darlings, and they adored

her.”

Mary also shared that her father met her mother in the afterlife six years ago. The loss of her parents has been irreparable for her; only in the company of her children and grandchildren can she find comfort.

Su adolescencia

“Yo empecé muy chica, tuve mi primer hijo a los 16 años, fui de las que llaman `teenage moms, fue cuando nos mudamos de California a El Paso, Texas, que conocí a mi esposo y tuvimos nuestro primer hijo”.

Mary nos comparte que su venida de su primer bebé le dio un giro completo a su vida, dada la corta edad en la que lo concibió, tuvo que madurar rápidamente.

“Ya no es mi vida ahora, es la vida de mi hijo tengo que pensar en él y en mí” reflexionó para nosotros.

Junto a su exesposo, tuvo tres hijos y

convivieron 26 años, hasta el momento en el que sus caminos se separaron y terminaron en buenos términos.

Fue precisamente su divorcio, uno de los motores principales para que Mary buscara un cambio en su vida y motivada por sus hermanos, quienes ya tenían años viviendo en St. Louis que decidió mudarse a esta ciudad.

“I started very young; I had my first child at 16 years old; I was one of what they call ‘teenage moms’; it was when we moved from California to Paso, Texas, that I met my husband, and we had our first child.”

Mary shares with us that the arrival of her first baby gave a complete turn to her life; given the young age at which she conceived him, she had to mature quickly.

“It’s not my life now; it’s my son’s life; I have to think about him and myself,” she reflected us. Together with her ex-husband, she had four children, and they lived together for 26 years until her paths separated, and they ended on good terms.

It was precisely her divorce, one of the main drivers for Mary to seek a change in her life and motivated by her brothers, who had already lived in St. Louis for years, that made her move to this city.

Su carrera profesional

El hecho de ser madre adolescente, no fue para Mary un impedimento para buscar sus sueños, ya con gracias al apoyo incondicional y soporte de sus padres, logró iniciar y concluir su carrera como Médico, profesión

a la que se dedicó por más de 20 años.

“Una de las cosas que encuentro en común con lo que hago ahora, es que me dedico a ayudar a la gente, pero de una manera diferente”.

Al llegar a St. Louis, una de las preguntas que Mary se hacía fue: ¿Que voy a hacer ahora?

¿A que me voy a dedicar?

“Hablé con mi hermano y le dije me voy para St. Louis, pero yo quiero hacer otra cosa, yo quiero ayudar a la gente en diferentes maneras. Entonces me dijo: `Está bien yo te ayudo ven para acá”.

Aprender un oficio completamente nuevo fue duro para Mary, pero tuvo excelentes mentores y la primera oportunidad le fue dada por Midland States Bank.

Fue a través de su hermano que conoció a Randy, a través de su recomendación, Mary fue “robada” por Montgomery Banks y desde hace cinco años se desempeña como asesora financiera especializada en proveer a familias migrantes de los recursos que les permitan adquirir su propia casa.

Her career

Being a teenage mother was not an impediment for Mary to pursuing her dreams; thanks to her parents’ unconditional support, she managed to start and finish her career as a doctor, a profession to which she dedicated herself for more than 20 years.

“One of the things I find in common with what I do now is that I dedicate myself to helping people, but in a different way.”

Upon arriving in St. Louis, one of the questions Mary asked herself was: What am I going to do now? What am I going to dedicate myself to?

“I told my brother I’m going to St. Louis, but I want to do something else; I want to help

people in different ways. She said, “Okay, I’ll help you; come here.”

Learning a new trade was hard for Mary, but she had great mentors, and Midland States Bank gave her the first opportunity.

It was through her brother that she met Randy; through his recommendation, Mary was “stolen” by Montgomery Bank. For the past five years, she has been a financial advisor specializing in providing migrant families with the resources to acquire their own House.

Regarding the facilities that the bank offers to make this dream a reality, she tells us: “Many migrants believe they need papers or a social security number to buy their own home, but this is not the case.”

There are many myths about what is needed to request a mortgage loan, but no one like the experts to give us reliable information like Mary.

“With the ITIN, this is possible, and if you follow my recommendations, you can stop paying rent once and for all and have your own home.”

“There is a big difference between paying rent, which you don’t know if it will go up next year and paying a monthly payment that won’t surprise you with interest, and after the agreed time, what you paid is not lost; why did they buy a house?

Para finalizar la entrevista, Mary nos comparte una reflexión personal:

“Si yo pude, cualquier persona puede, es nomás dejar el miedo y atreverse”.

Their dreams

Mary started young; at the age of 16, she had her first child; that situation, although difficult at the time for her, she has now allowed her to enjoy maturity and health with her children and grandchildren.

In addition, Mary has dreams that she wants to fulfill.

“When the time is right, I am going to create a non-profit organization to help adolescent mothers and provide them with tools that allow them to live that moment in a more prepared way so that they can give their children a dignified life so that they do not feel alone”

To end the interview, Mary shares a personal reflection with us:

ace unos días, en la intimidad de su humilde casa, nos encontrábamos mi esposo y su servidora hablando mal de la gente, como es nuestra costumbre, (si no tienes la confianza de criticar a todo mundo con tu pareja, considera el divorcio, por que te estás perdiendo de la mitad de la diversión).

La víctima en cuestión era una persona, por decirlo de manera educada “poco agraciada”. mi esposo entonces me compartió el insulto que, en su idioma natal (Criollo haitiano), le dirían a esa persona y es: “Kaka Kleren” dicha frase significa: “Te vez como la mierda de una persona que ha estado bebiendo alcohol sin comer durante los últimos tres días”.

Afew days ago, in the privacy of this humble home, my husband and me were talking wrong about people, as is our custom (if you don’t have the confidence to criticize everyone with your partner, consider divorce, for you’re missing half the fun).

To put it politely, the victim in question was a person “not very attractive.”

My husband then shared with me the insult

Hthat, in his native language (Hatian creole), they would say to that person, and it is: “Kaka Kleren” said phrase means: “You look like the shit of a person who has been drinking alcohol without eating for the last three days.”

Dicho insulto me pareció magnífico, no solo por lo descriptivo del grado de fealdad de la persona a la que estás insultando, sino la historia que hay detrás. Es decir, para que suceda lo anteriormente descrito, una persona debió ir a la tienda, comprar mucho alcohol, beberlo sin parar por tres días, no comer, ir al baño, defecar y voilá! El resultado es la fealdad misma.

Además de eso, alguien debió ser testigo de todo y relacionarlo con la apariencia de una persona.

Este bonito episodio me llevó a reflexionar acerca de los insultos y la intrínseca creatividad humana para hacer sentir al prójimo lo peor posible.

A lo largo de este artículo compartiré con usted algunos de los insultos más creativos de Latinoamérica y el mundo, siéntase con la libertad de sumarle los que considere que hagan falta.

Said insult seemed magnificent to me, not only because of how descriptive it is of the degree of the horror of the person you are insulting but also because of the story behind it. For the above to happen, a person had to go to the store, buy a lot of alcohol, drink it nonstop for three days, not eat, go to the bathroom, defecate, and voila! The result is ugliness itself. On top of that, someone must have witnessed everything and related it to a person’s appearance. This beautiful episode led me to reflect on insults and the intrinsic

human creativity to make others feel as bad as possible.

Throughout this article, I will share some of the most creative insults from Latin America and the world; feel free to add any that you consider necessary.

En el idioma Chino, los peores insultos están relacionados con aspectos sexuales o con importunar a los antepasados del insultado, tan es así, que el peor insulto que uno puede

recibir en este idioma es:

Improperio que significa: “C$%nga a tus ancestros hasta la décima octava generación”.

¡Eso es fuerte!

In the Chinese language, the worst insults are related to sexual aspects or to bother the ancestors of the insulted person, so much so that the worst insult one can receive in this language is (see image above).

Expletive means: “Fu·$% your ancestors until the eighteenth generation.” That’s harsh!

Ahora bien, para insultos, tenemos que hacer una parada en Rusia, donde la fama les llama por ser personas directas y sin temor de Dios.

Para los Rusos, un insulto muy común es denominar a una persona vaga, sin oficio, que prefiere hacer las cosas de manera cómoda, sin esfuerzo, o que pretende ser productivo cuando en realidad se dedica a perder el tiempo, para estos distinguidos personajes, los Rusos tienen la siguiente frase: Cuyo significado es: “Aquel que pretende

tirar las peras del peral con el miembro masculino”.

Digno sería conocer a la primera persona que lo haya intentado.

Now, for insults, we have to stop in Russia, where fame calls them for being direct people and without fear of God.

For Russians, a very common insult is to refer to a lazy person without a job, who prefers to do things comfortably, without effort, or who pretends to be productive when in reality, he is wasting time; for these distinguished characters, the Russians have the following phrase (see image 2)

Whose meaning is: “He who intends to throw the pears from the pear tree with the male member.”

Worthy would be to meet the first person who has tried it.

En Italia, por su parte, tienen incluso su “volgarometro”, y si, como usted lo imagina, es un ranking que mide los peores insultos que uno pueda recibir en italiano.

Ahora bien, Serbia no se queda atrás en cuanto a insultos, donde además de el improperio en si, le proporcionan un toque de humor negro (bastante negro) para subirle diez rayitas a la gravedad de la frase que te quieren decir.

Para los Serbios, los insultos a la familia también son graves, comunes y bastante utilizados, para iniciar una pelea una de las frases infalibles en este país es: Cuyo macabro significado es: “Me ching·$%e

“mentada” quedara en la nada y pidieron al Libro de los Récords que la certificara como la más grande del mundo. Y lo lograron.

El récord se logró después de que los habitantes superaran los 122 decibeles de ruido, al gritar al unísono “Emilio González, chi&%$ a tu madre”, en referencia al gobernador del Estado de Jalisco, Emilio González Márquez..

Otro dato interesante, es que de acuerdo a un estudio de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española, el país que más groserías “per capita” maneja en su vocabulario es: Colombia.

Now let’s get into familiar territory: insults in Latin America. Did you know that Mexico holds the Guinness record for the loudest insult in the world? It is right! In 2012, more than 5,000 people, fed up with the governor of Jalisco, organized themselves and decided to “mentar the mother” in a group and shouting. Workplace burnout: Rest is a human right

Although it sounds paradoxical, rest is a human “activity.” That is to say; amid so many activities, the human being must have a moment dedicated to recreation. It must be a respected, conscious, learned, and planned action.

Today human beings are subjected to work schedules that tire us, enslave and dehumanize us; to rhythms of obligations that exhaust us and make us lose the joyful and transcendent dimension of existence. Because life cannot consist of continuous occupation, work must be an activity that

helps us enjoy the party of life.

Human beings live as slaves to productivity, machines at the service of efficiency, robots at the service of performance and utility. As Harvey Cox says, today’s man “has bought prosperity at the price of dizzying impoverishment in its vital elements.” And, immersed in this eagerness, we have been losing the truth, the value, and the meaning of life.

For this reason, rest cannot just become an “active pause” in an instant to release tension, always conditioned to everyday work. Rest has to be a necessary space-time that helps to renew our entire being, our objectives, and our intentions; an “activity” that allows us to rediscover values, talents, and interests.

It must be the space-time that gives us back the enjoyment of the encounter with our roots, loved ones, and friends

through entertainment, gratitude, contemplation, nature, and the simplicity of small things.

It cannot be reduced to a few days of vacation “to have a good time,” while most of the time, “we have a bad time.” Not always, and not all those who interrupt their daily activities to “rest,” taking a few days of vacation, return rested.

Resting requires re-evaluating everything to relativize the little or nothing significant and find the essential. That is precisely the premise of the First Ibero-American Congress against Burnout, to be held in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2023.

Resting is reconnecting with ourselves and with others. It is renewing ourselves —from within— to avoid the fatigue it routinely produces. It must be a right of every human being. An activity to which organizations give due importance, with the certainty that, in this way, employees will have a better quality of life and work performance.

Burnout laboral: El descanso es un derecho humano

unque suene paradójico, el descanso es una “actividad” humana. Es decir, que, en medio de tantas actividades, el ser humano ha de contar con un momento dedicado al esparcimiento. Debe ser una actividad respetada, consciente, aprendida y planeada.

Hoy los seres humanos estamos sometidos a horarios de trabajo que nos fatigan, esclavizan y deshumanizan; a ritmos de obligaciones que nos agotan y nos hacen perder la dimensión gozosa y trascendente de la existencia. Porque la vida no puede consistir en una incesante ocupación para vivir, sino que el trabajo ha de ser una actividad que nos ayude a disfrutar de la fiesta de la vida.

Los seres humanos vivimos como esclavos de la productividad, máquinas al servicio de la eficiencia, robots al servicio del rendimiento y de la utilidad. Como dice Harvey Cox, el hombre de hoy “ha comprado la prosperidad al precio de un vertiginoso empobrecimiento en sus elementos vitales”. Y, sumergidos en este afán, hemos ido perdiendo la verdad, el valor y sentido de la vida.

Por eso, el descanso no puede convertirse apenas en una “pausa activa”, en un instante, para liberar tensiones, siempre condicionado

Aal trabajo de siempre. El descanso tiene que ser un espacio tiempo necesario y vital que ayude a renovar todo nuestro ser, nuestros objetivos e intenciones; una “actividad” que nos ayude a redescubrir valores, talentos e intereses.

Debe ser el espacio-tiempo que nos devuelva el disfrute del encuentro con nuestras raíces y seres queridos y amigos, mediante el entretenimiento, el agradecimiento, la contemplación, la naturaleza y la simplicidad de las cosas pequeñas.

No puede ser reducido a unos días de vacaciones “para pasarlo bien”, mientras la mayor parte del tiempo “la pasamos mal”. No siempre ni todos los que interrumpen sus actividades cotidianas para “descansar”, tomando unos días de vacaciones, regresan descansados.

Descansar exige reevaluarlo todo de nuevo en nuestras vidas, para relativizar lo poco o nada importante, y encontrar lo esencial. Esa es, precisamente, la premisa del Primer Congreso Iberoamericano contra el Burnout, a celebrarse en República Dominicana

en el verano de 2023.

Descansar es volver a conectarnos con nosotros mismos y con los otros. Es renovarnos —desde dentro— para evitar el cansancio que produce la rutina. Ha de ser un derecho de cada ser humano. Una actividad a la que las organizaciones den la debida importancia, con la certeza de que así los empleados tendrán mejor calidad de vida y rendimiento laboral.

College preparation: Key to US economic recovery

After the Covid-19 pandemic, all economic sectors were impacted worldwide, especially in the US. Each item had to reinvent itself to meet the demand and avoid the so-called “new reality.” Such is the case of the university sector, which has had to adapt to changes, not only through the academic curriculum but also by devising new study modalities to respond to students and understand the unique needs of the labor market.

As president of San Ignacio University, based in Miami, I have faced multiple challenges to continue offering quality education, generating updated content, and ensuring students have the tools to meet the outside world.

What is the role of the University on the part of the future workers of the United States? Many are asking this question right now due to the alternatives offered by the internet, where apparently anything can be learned. Although it is a powerful alternative to promote communication and break geographical and economic barriers, the role of the academy for years has been

fundamental.

The University is the ideal space to impart knowledge and the perfect environment for networking and building alliances with students, professionals, and friends. It has all the tools to prepare capable professionals in collaborative work, with critical thinking, and sensitive enough to understand the importance of solidarity, motivation, and understanding in facing adversity.

Its objective is to train leaders who resolve conflicts, adapt to changes and respond to the challenges of the labor market, business, and corporations.

The world has opened up a new niche for entrepreneurs, a group leading their commercial businesses or personal brands.

At the end of last year, the US had around 32.5 million people engaged in this business model. We are currently waiting for the figures for 2022, but everything points to exponential growth.

The venture has been a consequence of market demands, regardless of the niche (gastronomic, tourist, artisanal...), characterized by its organic and fortuitous growth in many cases. Hundreds of people launched their value propositions on the

market when they lost their job when they identified that something was missing around them or when they were looking for time management.

However, the success of a profitable, solid, and constantly growing business led by a natural entrepreneur with skills, tools, and skills, is only possible through training. And there is the University.

The country’s reality, the economic challenges, and the effort to minimize social gaps have led university education to take significant steps forward. Two years ago, a full-distance or hybrid education project was hard to come by. Today we are reinventing the educational system and training the professional that large corporations need.

La preparación universitaria: Clave en la recuperación económica de EEUU

ras la pandemia de Covid-19, todos los sectores económicos se vieron impactados alrededor del mundo, en especial en EEUU. Cada rubro tuvo que reinventarse para seguir atendiendo la demanda y sorteando la llamada “nueva realidad”. Tal es el caso del sector universitario, que ha tenido que adaptarse a los cambios, no solo a través del pensum académico, sino también ideando nuevas modalidades de estudio para dar respuesta a los estudiantes y entender las nuevas necesidades del mercado laboral.

Scientists develop magnetic powder that removes microplastics from water

En estas semanas he trabajado con muchos expertos en tecnología, cosa que no abunda. Aun así, cada vez sabemos menos, y todos los días la bendita tecnología cambia. Cada vez dependemos más de internet, pero nos juega serios problemas con su estabilidad y calidad, por más que paguemos. Me explico:

-No todos somos expertos en estos asuntos.

-No todos fuimos educados desde la niñez en el uso de la tecnología, que hoy es tan importante.

-Otros somos casi autodidactas. Con algo de orientación, vamos practicando, sin conocer a fondo la teoría. Si le sumamos el “lenguaje de los expertos”, que parecen hijos de Sigmund Freud, con un estilo denso que pocos entienden.

Esto crea serios problemas:

-Hay muchos ladrones en la industria de la tecnología. Dicen saberlo todo o simplemente “saber”, y es mentira… Eso sí, cobran como si supieran. Me sorprende como casi todos hablan: “se fue viral”, “hay que hacer un funnel”, y miles de palabritas domingueras que solo confirman la mala autoestima de estas personas. Como aprendí en PNL, si se comunicó y no lo entendieron, usted es el responsable.

Un buen comunicador hace lo imposible por comunicar verdaderamente y ser entendido por su audiencia. ¿Qué tiene esto que ver con la autoestima de ese ser humano? Por lo general, la gente que se comunica así se siente “importante”, porque saben más que los demás (creen ellos) y tienen que

preguntarle mucho.

Los verdaderos genios hablan de manera sencilla y clara, son directos, sencillos y se preocupan por enseñar. Mientras más se estudia, solo se confirma que no sabemos nada. “Yo solo sé que no sé nada” (Sócrates).

La comunicación debe ser sencilla, clara. Su verdadero objetivo es enseñar a otro de forma amena, llana, entretenida.

La buena comunicación es decisiva para una relación significativa. Se basa en hablar de

forma directa, sin usar a otros para llevar el mensaje, llamados por nosotros, los expertos en comunicación, “los teléfonos”, que distorsionan lo que se dice.

Nunca nos comunicamos bien, porque tenemos que interpretar lo que nos dicen. La incipiente suavización de las presiones inflacionarias en Estados Unidos, la acertada gestión por parte del Banco de Inglaterra de una difícil situación interna, los indicios de un giro en las medidas sanitarias en China que se aleja de su política de Covid 0 y el buen clima que acompaña a una Europa que enfrenta su primer invierno sin contar con el gas ruso, son eventos que vale la pena remarcar.

La inflación en Estados Unidos mostró los primeros signos de desaceleración en octubre y se ubicó en 7,7% respecto de un año atrás, situación que provocó euforia en Wall Street -las acciones tuvieron su mejor performance en dos años y medio- al tiempo que el mercado recortó su expectativa de suba de tasas de interés de la Reserva Federal para su última reunión del año de 75 a 50 punto básicos tras conocer el dato de inflación-.

En el mercado de renta fija, el rendimiento de los bonos del Tesoro estadounidense a dos años, especialmente sensibles a los movimientos en las tasas de interés, se desplomó 0,25 p.p. hasta tocar 4,33%, siendo esta su mayor caída desde octubre del 2008. En simultáneo la tasa a 10 años se derritió hasta tocar 3,82% (-0,27 p.p.) su movimiento más brusco desde marzo de 2020. El colapso en el retorno de los Treasuries fue acompañado por una caída vertical del dólar (desde que Jerome Powell anunció que la Fed empezaría a ajustar la política monetaria en diciembre de 2021, el dólar y los rendimientos del Tesoro se movieron juntos). Holiday train rides aren’t just for kids anymore. The North Pole Night Cap pop-up bar train excursion will roll out on real trains from St. Louis Union Station for three nights only on December 28, 29 and 30 at 8:30 p.m.

Doors to the Train Depot open at 7:15 p.m. on excursion nights. Train doors close at 8:25 p.m. and the train departs on time at 8:30 p.m.

This new one-of-a-kind pop-up bar experience takes place on beautifully decorated rail cars. Guests will enjoy beer, wine and spiked hot chocolate as they journey to the “North Pole.”

The evening starts in the holiday-themed Train Depot where the first beverage of the evening will be served. The Depot includes a variety of scenic picture stations for Instagram-worthy group photo opportunities or selfies.

Once onboard the decorated train cars, guests will enjoy a fun, festive atmosphere

with Christmas music, all of their beverages from the onboard bars and interaction with holiday characters. The train ride is a 45-minute round-trip excursion that returns to the depot at St. Louis Union Station. Emotions and Christmas: How do they affect our weight?

Christmas is possibly the time of year when we gain the most weight due to the increase in social and family events, the cancellation of physical activity, and the decrease in the intensity of the workload.

However,it is the time with the most significant emotional, varied and contradictory charges. We experience from illusion and joy to sadness and longing. A meeting can make us enjoy meeting friends and loved ones, leading us to commit excesses, be it eating, drinking alcohol, or altering the hours of rest.

Below are the types of emotions that can be experienced and how they impact weight:

-Illusion: Illusion is the best definition of the children’s face when they write letters to Santa Claus or walk through the illuminated streets. Adults are infected with this illusion in the social, work, and family spheres, increasing the intake of Christmas sweets and chocolates.

-Guilt: Christmas celebrations lead us to commit excesses. Intake increases in quantity and quality; we drink alcohol, stay up late and buy more than at other times of the year. The guilt for this, accompanied by not achieving our goals throughout the year,

creates a vicious circle of blame and excesses.

-Hope: This is the light that shines the brightest at Christmas. I hope to undertake and achieve a personal or professional project to improve our health. As for food, we take the season as a farewell to these habits to restart in the new year.

-Sadness: Mourning the loss of what is loved brings us sadness. Sadness to see that time passes and does not return, that life is one. This creates depression dice, which may or may not be channeled with food.

-Happiness is a state before, during, and after Christmas. We organize reunions of family and friends who live abroad, one more reason to prepare a good dinner or go to restaurants to socialize.

These emotions I have seen in my office explain why we gain weight in the two weeks or so that Christmas lasts. Which is yours?

Emociones y Navidad: ¿Cómo afectan a nuestro peso?

La Navidad es posiblemente la época del año en que más peso ganamos por el aumento de eventos sociales y familiares, la anulación de la actividad física y la disminución de la intensidad en la carga laboral.

No obstante, es el tiempo con mayores cargas emocionales, variadas y contradictorias. Experimentamos desde ilusión y alegría hasta tristeza y añoranza. Una reunión nos puede hacer disfrutar, por reencontrarnos con amigos y seres queridos, llevándonos a cometer excesos, ya sea comiendo, tomando alcohol o alterando las horas de descanso.

La misma reunión puede traernos al recuerdo, de manera especial, a personas que ya no están y extrañamos, lo que puede inhibirnos el apetito.

A continuación, los tipos de emociones que se pueden experimentar y cómo impactan en el peso:

-Ilusión: La ilusión es la mejor definición del rostro de los niños cuando realizan su carta a Papá Noel, o pasean por las calles iluminadas. Los adultos se contagian de esta ilusión en el ámbito social, laboral y familiar, aumentando la ingesta de dulces y chocolates navideños.

-Culpa: Las celebraciones navideñas nos llevan a cometer excesos. Aumenta la ingesta en cantidad y calidad, bebemos alcohol, trasnochamos y compramos más que en otras épocas del año. La culpa por esto, acompañada de no haber logrado nuestros objetivos a lo largo del año, realiza un círculo viciosos de culpas y excesos.

-Esperanza: Esta es la luz que más brilla en la Navidad. Esperanza por emprender y lograr

algún proyecto, personal o profesional, y mejorar nuestra salud. En cuanto a la comida, tomamos la época como despedida de estos hábitos para reiniciar en el nuevo año.

-Tristeza: El duelo por la pérdida de lo amado nos trae la tristeza. Tristeza por ver que el tiempo pasa y no regresa, que la vida es una. Esto crea dados de depresión, que puede ser canalizada o no con la comida.

-Felicidad: Es un estado antes, durante y después de la Navidad. Organizamos reencuentros de familiares y amigos que viven fuera, un motivo más para preparar una buena cena o salir a restaurantes a socializar.

Las fiestas decembrinas ya están aquí. Muchos colaboradores piensan en sentarse junto al árbol de Navidad a tomar un buen ponche de frutas, mientras disfrutan en familia de un merecido descanso. Por otro lado, estas fechas también pueden ser un verdadero dolor de cabeza, sobre todo para el departamento de Recursos Humanos, pues tiene que planificar muy bien los calendarios de vacaciones para garantizar que la empresa cumpla sus metas, sin importar la temporada.

Una buena organización evita que el ambiente de trabajo sea pesado, que los colaboradores estén molestos, así como la rotación del personal y el bajo rendimiento. Pero antes debemos hablar del calendario, algo que debe tener cualquier empresa, con mención a las necesidades materiales y humanas, y los tiempos específicos para cubrirlas. Este debe incluir días de mayor demanda, fechas festivas, así como suspensión de actividades.

También debe incluirse el calendario de vacaciones, para mantener una visión completa y estructurada de la planificación y cumplir los objetivos.

Estos son los tres lineamientos clave para crear un calendario de vacaciones y tener una empresa con un buen rendimiento.

1-Analiza las necesidades del equipo de trabajo y de la empresa: Revisar los períodos en que los colaboradores desean tomar sus vacaciones para cumplir con sus necesidades; siempre considerando las normas jurídicas del país para conocer los periodos que corresponden a cada colaborador. Detectar las temporadas de alta demanda, para evitar comprometer los

objetivos por falta de personal.

2-Organiza las vacaciones con tiempo: Esto evitará problemas si los colaboradores quieren tomar sus vacaciones al mismo tiempo, pues permite llegar a acuerdos y evita que la productividad y el ambiente laboral se vean afectados.

3-Crea tu propia plantilla: Llevar el control de la información en un Excel o software permitirá que la gestión de actividades sea más sencilla y fácil de comunicar con la empresa.

Que los colaboradores puedan desconectarse por completo del trabajo es tan importante como dormir, para evitar el famoso burnout, el desgaste físico y mental. Una buena planificación permitirá que puedan tomar sus vacaciones sin

ninguna preocupación o interrupción, para que regresen más creativos, proactivos y tan frescos como una lechuga.
