he Premio Esperanza (Hope Award) was established by the Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis in 2003 under the initiative of Anthony Ramirez. In 2010, The name award was change to include Mr. Ramirez’s name honoring him posthumously. The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals that have, over the years and through substantial voluntary service, contributed significantly to the betterment of the Hispanic community in the St. Louis region, in such fields as business, community in the St. Louis region, in such fields as business, community services, culture and the arts, education and human rights. The award inscription read as follows: “To you, for giving Hope... imagine the schools of the future and I see them as localized learning centers, just like gas stations, in every corner of cities or rural communities. In my head, this space no longer looks like a prison, but as one of those white shops where people are going to buy the latest models of tablets and phones. That is, well lit, clean, shiny, fluid and driven by experts who love what they do and serve the students with enthusiasm. In this free space students enter and leave at different times of the day, following a schedule established by themselves. Por Hergit Llenas e imagino las escuelas del futuro y las veo como centros de aprendizaje localizados, igual que las gasolineras, en cada esquina de las ciudades o comunidades rurales. En mi cabeza, este espacio ya no luce como una prisión, si no como una de esas tiendas blancas adonde la gente va a comprar los últimos modelos de tabletas y teléfonos. Es decir, bien iluminada, limpia, brillosa, fluida y manejada por expertos que aman lo que hacen y atienden el estudiantado con entusiasmo. En este espacio gratuito los alumnos entran y salen a diferentes horas del día, siguiendo un horario establecido por ellos mismos.

Quedarían como cosas olvidadas: pasar el examen, tener buenas notas, “dar respuestas equivocadas”, la segregación basada en la fecha de nacimiento, los horarios arbitrarios que obligan a levantase a nuestros niños tempranísimo, antes de que sus cerebros se despierten, entre un montón de otras prácticas absurdas. En lugar de eso, los estudiantes fijarían sus propias metas, a las cuales llegarían a su paso -según sus capacidades-, motivados por su curiosidad innata, cuidados por educadores. Por fin, liberada del bozal impuesto por un currículum rígido, la maestra será capaz de ajustarse a la velocidad de comprensión de los niños. Usando tecnología de punta que involucre múltiples sentidos, podrían nuestros niños adentrarse en un viaje maravillo por una molécula u otras galaxias y ver videos, documentales, acceder a una inmensa biblioteca virtual o jugar ajedrez. En mi imaginación, los padres habrán aprendido a jugar un papel activo, al entender que, mientras más involucrados están, más altas son las probabilidades de que sus hijas e hijos logren sus metas. De hecho, junto con los maestros, estos padres decidirían cuál modelo de aprendizaje se acomoda mejor a sus pequeños.
