OPENING NIGHT YOUTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAM LIFTOUT FESTIVAL MAP LEAF FESTIVAL GOOD FOOD GUIDE WORKSHOPS GENERAL INFO TICKETING THANK YOU
Festival Director’s Welcome ‘Do not fear mistakes. There are none’. Miles Davis Welcome to the 4th annual Bello Winter Music, an intimate, family friendly event that spreads across the venues of Bellingen over four wonderful days. This is a festival where you go to discover new music from across the globe and Australia in a village setting. The program is diverse, quirky and full of surprises including one-off performances that encourage collaboration between artists. The emphasis is on great live music and a friendly, inclusive, community atmosphere. In programming the event we don’t limit it to one genre. We truly believe there is something for everybody. We love that in one venue there can be three singers huddled around a single mic singing gorgeous harmonies to an entranced crowd, and in a venue up the road there is an absolutely thumping eight piece funk and soul band. The festival is about music and fun, and the greatest experience is gained with an open mind. So give new and interesting bands a go, you might be surprised. There are no mistakes, and if you don’t like a gig then there is another gig just across the road or down the street.
It’s with great pleasure that I welcome all the visitors to the shire who are attending the fourth Bello Winter Music festival. We are once again all look-
ing forward to seeing the amazing music and performances that this fabulous event brings to our region. The line up of highly talented international and local musicians will guarantee an incredible four days of entertainment and fun. I personally always enjoy absorbing the buzz and good will that emanates throughout the festival and can’t wait to get amongst it. I would also encourage any visitors to take the time to discover the rest of the Shire. We locals are blessed to live in one of the most biodiverse and naturally beautiful places on the planet and encourage you to go and enjoy our clean beaches, forests, rivers and mountains while your here. For details on scenic drives, arts and crafts, trails or local markets drop into our Visitor Centres or download our Discovery Apps for the latest on other events and attractions. See you at the festival! Cr Dominic King
Hit picks for me include checking out Tangents, Satsuki Odamura and the Sydney Koto Ensemble, Lillie Mae, Fraser A. Gorman and Deborah Conway with Willy Zygier. I’m also thrilled Jack Carty is back again as our festival patron. The Street Parade, Youth Mentorship Program and LeaF sustainable festival all return. Mandy Nolan, Brian Nankervis and Seth Jordan also appear at the festival, providing fun insights into the many amazing performers of the 2018 lineup. In 2018 with the help of Waste Not Bellingen, and supported by Bellingen Solar and The Bellingen Brewery, we are moving towards a Waste Free festival. More details are found in the LeaF program on page 23. BWM is a ticketed event and takes place in the official venues of the festival in the town of Bellingen. Inevitably some performers will be more popular than others, and venues have their individual capacity numbers. Please, if you are concerned you might not get into a ‘must see’ act, get there early. If you miss out then there is another great gig nearby. Glenn Wright Director

Justin Townes Earle (US)
Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier
Once compared to a man who wears many suits, in thirty-two short years Justin Townes Earle has experienced more than most, both personally and professionally. Between releasing seven full-length-critically-acclaimed albums, constant touring, multiple stints in rehab, a new found sobriety, being born Steve Earle’s son, amicable and not-so-amicable break-ups with record labels, and facing the trials and tribulations of everyday life, it’s safe to say he has quite the story to tell.
Deborah Conway has been a significant and eloquent contributor to Australian music for over 30 years. Conway met Willy Zygier in 1991 and together they have released albums that have attracted critical acclaim from reviewers and audience plaudits.
Since launching his recording career a decade ago, Justin Townes Earle has established a reputation as a singular leading light in the Americana music community. With fearless, personally charged lyrical insight and infectious melodic craftsmanship, the young veteran singer-songwriter has built a rich, deeply soulful body of work set that’s both emotionally riveting and effortlessly uplifting.
Conway & Zygier have pursued careers of extra curricular activities alongside the core business of writing, recording and performing their songs. These have included producing the national concert series called Broad of all female singer/songwriters 2005 – 2008, Conway took on the role of Artistic Director for the Queensland Music Festival 2009 – 2011 and currently they are the Festival Director & Artistic Director for The Shir Madness Melbourne Jewish Music Festival.

Lillie Mae (US)
Lior
Lillie Mae has been singing and playing on stages across the country since she could stand on her own two feet.
Lior burst on to the Australian music scene in 2005 with his stunning debut album - ‘Autumn Flow’. Recorded and released entirely independently, the album became one of the most successful independent debuts in Australian music history. He then went on to release more solo albums that featured Sia, Passenger, Joseph Tawardos and many others.
A multi-instrumentalist of incredible talent, she is a beloved artist in Nashville, and according to Jack White “is one in a billion. You won’t find anyone else quite like this woman no matter how long you live.” A longtime fixture in country and bluegrass circles, she is highly recognized in the rock world for the considerable amount of time she spent as a member of Jack White’s all-female live and studio band The Peacocks as fiddle and mandolin player
Most artists set out with an ambition to build a career based on musical credibility and integrity whilst maintaining an independence and individuality in their craft. Lior is certainly part of that rare breed that has achieved this whilst garnering a great degree of success and critical acclaim. Lior is not slowing down as he is set to release his next album in 2018.

Maddy Jane
Fraser A. Gorman
Maddy is a talented young artist from Tasmania, writing songs far beyond her years on a beat up guitar her mum gave her in high school.
Fraser A. Gorman has never forgotten that rock music is meant to be fun. Sure, you can sing songs about heartache and you can sing songs about loss but you gotta do it because it makes you feel better. He’s a rare performer, artfully combining the sensitivity, romance and introspection of a classic songwriter with an unadulterated joy of performing in front of an audience.
She creates rollicking indie pop full of irony, sarcasm, catchy hooks and fun guitar riffs with an endearing Australiana twist. It’s been a massive 12 months for Maddy with break out singles ‘Thank You and Sorry’, ‘No Other Way’ and ‘Drown It Out’ getting high rotation on national broadcaster jjj. Plus, a string of supports around Australia with the likes of Tash Sultana, Polish Club, Kingswood and Luca Brasi, showcasing at Bigsound, The Plot and festival appearances at Festival of The Sun, Falls Festival (Marion Bay) and New Years on The Hill.
Fraser is a central part of the small but amazing DIY Melbourne collective Milk! Records (run by Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher) and the endorsements of his skill as a writer and musician have run loud all over the world. Indeed, Melbourne’s been responsible for an undeniable wealth ogreat music in its many twisted, bleary-eyed forms, with Fraser representing the latest in this impressive legacy. Caiti Baker
Thando
Born into a household filled with vinyl, CDs and tapes of blues, soul, gospel, jazz, big band and rock & roll, Caiti Baker was raised amongst music. Whether it was playing on the stereo, in the car, at a concert or attending week long festivals – music was everywhere.
Zimbabwean born songstress Thando has been gracing stages around Australia with her electric presence and powerhouse vocal. Heralded as a commanding performer, her ability to tell a story takes her audience on a journey of loving oneself and reflection.
As a child, Caiti developed a love and appreciation for the pioneering music but was drawn obsessively to hip hop, R&B, New Jack Swing and Neo soul. Caiti writes songs about what she knows and feels, sings with her guts and soul and unashamedly performs the hell out of them. But that will all be obvious when you hear her music and watch her perform, which will have you either dancing or chilling with a grin on your face.
Inluenced by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Queen, TLC, and Jill Scott, Thando has crafted her own genre bending sound. Her 2016 debut EP ‘Digital Love Letters’ paved the road to a slew of festival appearances such as Strawberry Fields, Woodford Folk Festival and NYE on The Hill. With the release of her brand new single NUMB, this multi dimensional performer is solidifying her status as Melbourne’s newest first lady of R&B. They have appeared at many major festivals and supported international acts around the country. In celebration of the launch of his new 7 inch “My Little Sweet Aussie Sweetheart”, Archer is heading out to walk the riverbanks and ranges, highways and back lanes of his beloved home country for some intimate shows. Don’t miss this rare deep and true voice, the king of the galleys, heartbreaker, kangaroo whisperer and tale teller.
Magpie’s songs capture shared elements of his life growing up in the bush at Dashville, and his time travelling about the world, the relationships formed, and the experiences in between. His songs cruise in their approach, with a late 60’s Americana groove, yet have a direct emotional thrust that cuts to the core of the Australian spirit.

The singular voices of Ash Bell and Sara Tindley combine for a very special release “I Let My Guard Down”. Songwriters of the highest order, this collaboration is the coming together of a soul “brother and sister” to form timeless folk/roots mini-masterpieces of tough love and deep humanity.
Hailing from the Sunshine State, with a colourful heritage threading back to the hidden hills of India and the sands of Samoa, Tiana Khasi is carefully carving her name – and voice – across the international stage.
From humble beginnings in Melbourne’s independent music scene, Masco have gone on to grace stages of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Pigsty in July, and Falls Festival, and have warmed up crowds for national and international talent from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets to The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Having worked closely with one another since 2012, this release marks an exciting chapter in the pairs’ musical journey.
Khasi (say: Kah-see) is the name of Tiana’s tribe found deep in the North Eastern part of India, high in the hills of Meghalaya. As one of the few remaining matriarchal societies in the world, the Khasi women remain a cornerstone and constant muse in Tiana’s art and music.

Honey & Knives
Loren Kate’s connection to her audience has left many in both joy and tears. Her voice is softly beautiful, quiet yet strong.
Bellingen based Honey & Knives are a 5-piece folkgrass band driven by vocal harmonies and a visceral energy. Based in Bellingen, they have featured at various folk festivals over the past four years, including Woodford, Mullum, Dorrigo, Illawarra & Cygnet. The band is known for mixing raw truths with a rollicking good time and innate ability to coordinate clothing for visually spectacular results.
(US)
Listening to Loren Kate you can’t help but feel like you’re eavesdropping on a very honest conversation or reading the secrets of someone’s locked diary and wondering whether you really should be party to this level of personal detail. Loren’s storytelling and intention to share is perhaps a kind of catharsis and presumably, helping others by doing so.
David Dondero is an American songwriter with a catalogue spanning 20 years. His songs range from the light hearted “Don’t be Eyeballin’ My Po’ Boy” (written to pay homage to the great sandwiches of New Orleans after the flood) to “Boxer’s Fracture” (a song written in response to the endless flow of mass shootings in America). National Public Radio in America listed him as one of the top living songwriters in 2006 but that is an accolade Dondero is quick to downplay.
The band is wildly excited to have just released their second studio album, ‘Who Are You’.

The Rebetiko Duo FRI 13th 7:00pm QUDO JAPANESE FRI 13th 11:00pm CEDAR BAR SAT 14th 6:30pm BREWERY SAT 14th 9:00pm HYDE Con Kalamaras and Byron Triandafyllidis present the music of Rebetika. Known as the Greek Urban Blues, this music came to prominence in the early 1920’s in the ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki, conveying the brutal harshness of life on the streets. Rebetika has always been the music of the poor and the dispossessed, combining different musical styles of the region, with lyrics describing the joy, sorrow, and the difficulties of everyday life.
Tangents SAT 14th 3:00pm MEMORIAL HALL SUN 15th 1:30pm MEMORIAL HALL Tangents are an Australian-based quintet that melds electronic production, experimental rock and free improvisation. Comfortable working with jazz, folk music, post-rock and electronic music, their album ‘Stateless’ was voted by Treble as one of the 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2016 labelling it as “an exercise in beat-laden serenity” Their incendiary live shows are a concoction of jazz-inflected melodicism, junglist rhythms and post-punk and are driven by live drums and electronic beats, with processed performances on cello, electric guitar and piano/Rhodes electric piano.
Roesy FRI 13th 10:45pm NO.5 SAT 14th 3:30pm BREWERY SUN 15th 8:30pm CEDAR BAR Roesy’s melodies have the presence to seem familiar while remaining distinctly his own; impossible to ignore or dismiss. The deceptive simplicity of his lyrical themes reveals their latent complexities upon repeated listening. Many contain references to the eternal subjects of Truth, Beauty and the search for the luminous and transcendent in the midst of everyday living. His work shows a personal honesty and genuine open-heartedness that never sails close to vapid sentimentality or hollow romance.
