A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR I am pleased to extend a very warm welcome to everyone who is attending the third Bello Winter Music festival. We are proud to host four days of awe inspiring performances, here in one of the friendliest and most beautiful locations in the region, Bellingen. With a stellar lineup of performers planned, this year’s festival will build on the success and experience of the previous two events where the town was buzzing and the venues came alive with music. It is wonderful that Bello Winder Music is showcased through our local venues in partnership with local business to maximise economic benefits for our town which is one of the reasons that it has been so warmly embraced and attended by both our local and the broader community. If you are a visitor to our region I encourage you to take the time to explore further afield as our shire has a lot to offer. Take a drive up the mountain to the picturesque town of Dorrigo or head to our coast and the towns of Mylestom and Urunga. For details on scenic drives, arts and crafts, trails or local markets drop into our Visitor Centres or download our Discovery Apps for the latest on other events and attractions. See you at the festival! Cr Dominic King

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Welcome to the third annual Bello Winter Music; jam packed with four days of music, workshops, street performance and more. Crossing the Tasman Sea to join the Bello line up are the pioneers of dub & bass, Aotearoa’s Salmonella Dub who are celebrating 25 years of pushing musical boundaries. Other headliners include balladeer Joe Pug (USA), Ben Ottewell, who continues to carve out an impressive career outside UK band Gomez, Melbourne’s Tinpan Orange, and highly dance-able African group The Senegambian Jazz Band. Also appearing is Jo Jo Smith (50 years in Music celebratory concert), Mama Kin + Spender’s collaboration, Husky’s Opening Night Gala set, and the Bello LeaF - Learning Festival – proudly sponsored by Bellingen Solar Depot. We are honoured to have Bellingen bred Jack Carty as the 2017 Festival Patron. He’ll be very busy over the weekend - performing, mentoring and speaking. Don’t miss the very special debut performance of his upcoming album with a full string section. If you run into Jack at the festival, be sure to thank him for his incredible efforts. Being Festival Patron is a big job and contributes greatly to the community spirit of the event. For the first time, we will present a free concert on the outdoor stage in Church Street on Saturday morning, and a New Orleans style Street Parade* on Sunday morning. Both events are kindly sponsored by Kombu Wholefoods. 2bbb radio will once again be broadcasting live over the weekend. For updates listen to 93.3fm or 107.3fm, stream online from 2bbb. net.au. Bello Winter Music is a ticketed event and takes place in various venues throughout Bellingen. Inevitably, some performances will be more popular so to avoid disappointment, please arrive early to ‘must see’ events. If you do miss out on an act, chances are there is another great show next door. Please remember to respect the town, drive carefully, park in legal spaces, and keep the noise down when leaving your last gig. Most importantly have a great weekend. Glenn Wright Director *Subject to approvals and weather.

SALMONELLA DUB (NZ) Salmonella Dub are excited to join the bill as one of the headliners for the 2017 Bello Winter Music festival. Formed 25 years ago in Christchurch NZ, Salmonella Dub have rightfully been called the pioneers and originators of a unique Pacific style of dub/drum ‘n’ bass/reggae/ hip hop and groove based rock. Acts such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Scribe & P Money, Shapeshifter, Cornerstone Roots, Kora, King Kapisi as well as the new wave of Australian acts like Budspells, Rastawookie, King Tide, Red Eyes, and The Strides can all thank Salmonella Dub for paving the way to opening Australian ears to an alternative music scene that was largely populated by house influenced dance music or straight guitar rock. The Dub come armed with their world famous, heavy hitting horn section. Be prepared for a serious dancefloor experience with this phenomenal live eight-piece band celebrating 25 successful years in the biz! This one’s not for the faint hearted.

HUSKY After a year-long absence from Australian shores, Melbourne band Husky return with a swag of stories, a driving new single ‘Late Night Store’ and the exciting news of shows at year’s end. ‘Late Night Store’ is taken from the duo’s forthcoming third record, due for release next year. After relocating to Berlin in late 2015, Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss wrote ‘Late Night Store’ upon their recent return to Australia. The duo’s natural ability shines on ‘Late Night Store’, though sonically they’ve added visceral new colours to their palette. A striking blend of guitars and keys are propelled forward by a steady groove, whilst Husky’s vocal floats along effortlessly; his poetic lyrics creating a twisted and fantastical story that also feels strangely relatable.

JOE PUG (USA) A singer/songwriter whose songs offer an updated version of the country-folk archetypes that Bob Dylan and John Prine made famous, Austin’s Joe Pug’s rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This unorthodox promotional strategy resulted in the EP selling over 20,000 copies. This led to a string of sold out shows, including performances at huge festivals such as Lollopalooza, The Newport Folk Festival and Bonaroo and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver).

TINPAN ORANGE Tinpan Orange are one of Australia’s most revered lo-fi folk trios. Led by the unmistakeable voice of Emily Lubitz alongside her brother, guitarist Jesse Lubitz, and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Alex Burkoy, their critically acclaimed album, ‘Love is a Dog’ was nominated for The Age Music Victoria Best Folk Album 2016. With its razor-sharp melodies and cinematic string arrangements, it was lauded ‘a strikingly assured album’ by Rolling Stone Magazine. After touring Europe in 2016 with The Cat Empire, the band return to Germany and France in early 2017, followed by a string of Australian shows in March including appearances at Panama Festival, Yackandandah and Nannup Music Festival. They return to play Bello Winter Music as part of a national Australian tour in June/July.

BEN OTTEWELL (UK) Ben Ottewell (UK) will again traverse this great land, belting out tunes from the Gomez songbook and his stunning solo releases, ‘Shapes & Shadows’ and ‘Rattlebag’. As a singer and lead guitarist in rock band Gomez, Ben Ottewell is well known for his unmistakable voice and talent for blistering and inspired guitar work. Rolling Stone declared, “Gomez’s not-so- secret weapon is Ben Ottewell.” And as GQ Magazine once wrote and anyone who listens can attest, “[his] voice is not of this world.” Ben Ottewell’s acoustic guitar and harrowing vocals are truly mesmerising. “He kept us entertained with some stellar song choices but it was his unique and frankly powerful voice that left us all leaning in and wanting more.” -The AU Review

BEC SANDRIDGE A nomadic pop/punk logomaniac, Bec Sandridge has a guitar swagger reminiscent of St. Vincent, and the delivery of new wave icons like Deborah Harry and David Byrne. Her most recent single ‘High Tide’ has landed high rotation on triple j and was a fan favourite on her recently wrapped Australian tours alongside The Rubens and Highasakite. The last six months saw heavy airplay on triple j and community radio, a myriad of shows including main support for Montaigne and Cub Sport on their national tours and a standout appearance at BIGSOUND. Recent festival appearances include Festival of The Sun, Fairgrounds, Secret Garden Festival, The Hills Are Alive and Mountain Sounds Festival, and now Bello Winter Music!

MAMA KIN + SPENDER From heart-stopping ballads to percussive beats steeped in soul, Mama Kin + Spender is the love project that had to happen. Drawing on the musical synergies of two long-time friends, collaborators and mischief-makers, Mama Kin + Spender is both urgent and stirring, seeping into the cracks where binding harmonies and the power of the voice reside. The duo traverse the spectrum of sound from tender to stomping, where brooding raw guitar tears at the heart while drums and percussion give primal force. From dark to light, inward to outward Mama Kin + Spender is a bewitching collision of alchemy, harmony and percussive wizardry.

VAUDEVILLE SMASH “I’ll be damned if Vaudeville Smash aren’t the most mind-blowingly refreshing live act to emerge from Melbourne since God knows when.” (Lachlan Kanoniuk, Beat) Vaudeville Smash return with new single, ‘Laura’ - a song about a wild, untamed man-eater and the men who welcome the imminent heart¬break. Laura is the first taste of The Gift, the band’s sophomore album which evokes visions of Cameo, Midnight Star and the Gap Band and encompasses almost two years of writing, recording and touring. Made of three brothers and two mates, no other Australian band sounds like them. An explosion of funk, flute, sax, synth and groove, the dance floor is packed at a Vaudeville Smash gig.

30/70 30/70 are a Melbourne Hip-Hop and R&B family delivering signature hypnotic grooves drenched in love, weed, meditation and spirituality. Expressions of the cosmos and spiritual riches channel through their music to take you on a journey into the dank delirium. O.G. beat disciples Ziggy Z, Hazy Hicks, Chaser and Thomas keep it tight in the rhythm section while Allysha Joy stays liquid smooth grooveing over jazz, hip-hop live beats like they’re on some Roy Ayers tip, unfolding, creating, evolving…… 30/70 is the soundtrack to your nights of desire, an honest expression of music and love.

RADICAL SON Effortlessly crossing genres from soul to hip-hop and beyond, Radical Son is a standout vocalist and songwriter like no other. His often poignant lyrics chart a course from hopelessness to healing; mercilessly deconstructing what is and forever imagining what could be. Radical Son’s music and stories are always guided by his Indigenous heritage from the Kamilaroi nation of Australia and the south pacific nation of Tonga. As a vocalist, Radical Son has a unique ability to deliver as a soul singer, rapper and spoken word artist. This natural dexterity defines his earned place and presence in the contemporary musical landscape. The back-bone of Radical Son’s stories continuously urge our human spirit to approach life with love and compassion.

ARCHER

COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS

BUDDY

Archer is an old time sing-song man. He works the fruit picking rounds, sits under the sky a lot and drives a car if he has to.

At just 16 years old, Courtney Marie Andrews left home in Arizona for her first tour. She travelled up and down the West Coast, busking and playing any bars or cafes that would have her. Soon after, she took a Greyhound bus for four nights straight from Phoenix to New York to do the same on the East Coast.

Buddy is a five-piece melodic indie band from Los Angeles. The singer, also named Buddy, often tours and performs solo and will be doing so in Australia this June/July, including at Bello Winter Music.

He has toured widely across Australia and internationally, playing many major festivals and supporting luminaries such as Martha Wainwright, Pokey Le Farge and CW Stoneking. Despite this you might find it hard to catch him. He’ll appear off a road somewhere and sing you a few songs and then continue off into a forest leaving you wondering if it was a ghost story or a dream.

Fri 7th 9:30pm Brewery Sat 8th 2:00pm Cedar Bar Sat 8th 6:15pm Brewery Sun 9th 4:30pm Federal Hotel

(USA)

For a decade or so since, Courtney has been a session and backup singer and guitarist for nearly 40 artists, including Damien Jurado. She never stopped writing her own material, though and picking up admirers like Jurado and Ryan Adams along the way, she has quietly earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter.

(USA)

The solo shows are acoustic -based, more stripped down versions of the indie folk songs that appear on the recordings. In this setting, they are more intimate, melancholic, and quieter versions in nature than the full band version.

THE TESKEY GREG BROTHERS SHEEHAN

THE STRIDES

Forming in 2008, The Teskey Brothers are a band that makes you feel more at home than the hot drifting smell of rosemary bolognese, or collecting your own eggs from the hatch down the hill. Why? Because they are family, and once you are in the audience, so are you.

Fronted by roots man Ras Roni from Barbados via London, Fijian MC LTL GZeus and Sierra Leonian ragga powerhouse Blaka C, The Strides deliver a musical experience that is as powerfully explosive as it is authentic.

Legendary musician Greg Sheehan has long been regarded as one of the finest percussionists in Australia, yet ‘percussionist’ doesn’t really do justice to the kind of musician he really is. A pioneer of contemporary rhythm in Australia, and with his propensity for experimentation & exploration on all sorts of instruments – tuned and un-tuned, man-made and earth-made, he is firmly in the realm of Australia’s great musical innovators. Greg is widely regarded internationally as a leader in this field as a performer, recording artist and teacher.

The Strides music faithfully builds on the foundations of classic roots reggae with a hiphop edge, forging a sound that brings together modern dance hall, dub beats and reggae-pop. The Strides have forged a truly global sound melding a diversity of cultures and instrumentation under the one universal consciousness.

HUSSY HICKS

JUZZIE SMITH

TULLARA

Hussy Hicks have a unique musical approach that spans many genres - from boisterous blues and roots, to contemporary folk fortified with delicious vocal harmonies; alt country inspired tales from the road to 80’s style power ballads. Expect lots of interactive jamming, killer guitar licks and soaring vocals, an approach that has seen them on stage in jams with everyone from Michael Franti and Edward Sharp to the Indigo Girls.

A true musical virtuoso with a style that is bluesy/folk/Country mixed into a world of its own. Juzzie gives performances that are marked by an amazing ability to play guitar, harmonica and percussion at the same time using all of his body. It seems Juzzie is at home holding anything that makes a sound, and he combines this with a real rhythmic talent and a raw, warm vocal style. The result is truly engaging, mesmerizing music that makes you want to move and leaves you feeling inspired.

23 year old Australian singer/ songwriter Tullara has quickly developed a reputation as one of the country’s brightest up and coming performers. Unafraid to delve into very honest and universal emotions – from heartache to hope, triumph to tears – the intricacy and percussive finger tapping wizardry of Tullara’s guitar playing (not to mention the power of her voice) will leave you wanting more.

LEAH SENIOR

GUYY & THE FOX

SARA TINDLEY

Leah Senior’s music falls into a dim wallpapered room sitting delicately between the rock’n’roll and old time folk records. The blinds are drawn and the songs are covered in a fine layer of dust yet there is sunlight peaking through the gaps, a silver lining to a dusky tone and a sense of humour behind the tragedy.

Award winning, international touring, duo Guyy & The Fox have been mesmerising thousands in the Middle East, South Africa and Australia.

Sara Tindley returns this year with a fearless new album, ‘Wild and Unknown’. Performed as a duo with Michael Turner (The Drift, Spikey), the album was produced by Nick Didia (Bruce Springsteen, Powderfinger, Pearl Jam) at La Cueva. Their collaboration germinated twelve wry, insightful tracks narrating the turbulent life Tindley’s endured since her last album, Time (2011).

The duo has become well known for their enthralling performances, with the combination of Guyy’s deft guitar work and The Fox’s fierce and beautiful playing style spawning an absorbing show of soaring violin over guitar. From huge instrumentals and acoustic duelling to haunting ballads, Guyy & The Fox’s music will leave you spellbound.

Leah’s album “Summer’s On The Ground” recorded in a rickety abandoned hall reveals a haunting storyteller, Rolling Stone saying “this is insular music, akin to eavesdropping on someone else’s prettily conFri 7th 6:15pm veyed thoughts”.

LOW DOWN RIDERS

THE NINTH CHAPTER

Combining the intimacy of folk with the energy of bluegrass, Ben Wilson’s sound is a well revised, trans-Atlantic marriage of genres. Wilson delivers thought provoking original songs with well-honed skill, making for a captivating performance from an energetic young songwriter.

Born and bred in Sydney’s inner west, the Low Down Riders are a five piece band inspired by the musical gumbo that is New Orleans street music.

The Ninth Chapter has established itself as one of the must see live acts in the country. Delivering the perfect amalgam of heavy groove and funk undertones, TNC brings the good time vibe with an open invitation to anyone keen to join them.

With a sound that wouldn’t be out of place in the bars of Frenchman street, horns that weave a raucous melody over A member of the notorious the top of a rhythm section Button Collective, Wilson that chugs seamlessly like a draws on a broad spectrum of steamboat down the Mississippi and lyrics that tell tales of experiences. happiness and heartbreak in the true storytelling tradition of the south.

It’s always been about more than music for The Ninth Chapter. It’s about lifestyle. It’s about good times amongst great people. That’s always been the goal and it resonates through their music and live performance.

The BELLO LeaF (Learning Festival)

We are pleased to present our third Bello Learning Festival. LeaF workshops, forums, and tours will cover a rich array of eco-learning topics, presented by nine organisations on behalf of the Bellingen Shire Learning Alliance (BSLA) – a network of 14 local sustainability-focused groups. LeaF is proudly sponsored by Solar Depot Bellingen and runs from Friday to Sunday of the festival. LeaF events are part of the festival program and free to ticket holders. Non-ticket holders are welcome to join (space allowing) by donation at the event. Visit the BSLA tent in the Market Park to learn more about LeaF events or the BSLA and affiliate groups. We are excited to introduce our first ever “LeaF Patron”! Environmentalist Tim Silverwood will participate in events throughout the festival to share his story, meet festival goers, and inspire us with his passion for reducing human impacts on our oceans and planet. An avid surfer, Tim became alarmed at the increasing threat plastic poses to the planet, co-founding the organisation ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ in 2009. They aim to reduce plastic pollution through education and participation by asking people to simply take three pieces of rubbish when they leave the beach…or anywhere! Tim is a Boomerang Alliance spokesperson; a consultant to government/industry; the 2014 NSW Govt Green Globe Sustainability Champion; and a founder of ReChusable, providing reusable alternatives to disposable products.

FRIDAY

Tim’s story is entertaining and inspiring, reminding us that anyone and everyone can be a change-maker. His visit to Bellingen is timely as the BSLA launches its “Waste Not Bello” campaign – to wean Bellingen off single-use plastics.

Roundabout Theatre create fun roving acts and tailored performance installations for arts, cultural, music and children’s festivals and community events. Their distinctive performing style combines improvisation, clowning, tableaux and circus to create delightfully idiosyncratic displays of human frailties, delusions and aspirations. With elegant costuming, elaborate props and carefully crafted back-stories, the result transports captivated crowds of all ages into a mischievously absurd parallel universe.
